00:01:22.060 Hello, everybody. I'm Lou Dobbs and welcome to The Great America Show.
00:01:26.160 Thanks for joining us.
00:01:27.820 New trouble brewing for 2024 Republican not-so-hopeful Ron DeSantis.
00:01:33.380 A new poll out today from the University of New Hampshire has DeSantis in fifth place behind President Trump,
00:01:40.120 Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley and Chris Christie of all people.
00:01:44.880 Republican mega-donor Ken Griffin, who was one of the establishment donors who drafted DeSantis to run,
00:01:51.040 now says he's on the sidelines, doesn't know who to support in the election.
00:01:55.780 He says he's unsure of what DeSantis' winning strategy would be and says Donald Trump is now the runaway favorite.
00:02:03.860 We're now through the first debate.
00:02:07.080 And I'll tell you what, I'm still on the sidelines as to who to support in this election cycle.
00:02:13.160 I'm still on the sidelines.
00:02:13.960 And in fact, it probably doesn't matter.
00:02:17.280 Donald Trump has been made the martyr by the legal system.
00:02:22.800 He's right now the runaway favorite in the Republican primary.
00:02:26.540 It's not really clear what DeSantis' campaign strategy is.
00:02:30.060 I don't know his strategy.
00:02:33.260 I'm in the same camp you are.
00:02:35.220 It's not clear to me what voter base he's intending to appeal to.
00:02:40.740 Factually, one of the best first-term governors in the history of the United States.
00:02:47.320 Florida, under his leadership, crushed it during the pandemic.
00:02:51.220 They've had just tremendous success.
00:02:53.660 The last few months have been different.
00:02:55.340 And sometimes success goes to people's head.
00:02:59.440 Sometimes success means that the ecosystem that you live in changes.
00:03:04.800 People no longer give you good feedback about the pros and cons of your policies.
00:03:09.340 I don't know what happened in the DeSantis administration in Florida.
00:03:13.160 I do know first-term governor, just a phenomenal job.
00:03:17.920 But that hasn't been how this last few months has played out.
00:03:21.140 It's been over three months since the launch of DeSantis' presidential campaign,
00:03:25.900 and he has yet to show any sign that his campaign can draw support.
00:03:31.180 The nation's first primary only months away now.
00:03:34.780 Marks' stem Attorney General Merrick Garland on Capitol Hill this week.
00:03:39.000 He took a beating from Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee.
00:03:43.340 Garland didn't really answer any questions directly.
00:03:46.140 And when he came close to directly, he oftentimes was outright lying.
00:03:52.020 One of the members who schooled the attorney general, Congresswoman Victoria Sparts.
00:03:57.640 The congresswoman, born in the Soviet Union, emigrated to America in her early 20s.
00:04:03.080 She asked Garland if he was aware that his DOJ was being run like the KGB in the Soviet Union,
00:04:10.340 targeting innocent people and driving fear into their homes.
00:04:14.320 Attorney General, you had a very moving statement about your grandparents coming here from Belarus
00:04:23.480 to live in the country without fear of prosecution.
00:04:27.520 I grew up in a very similar country, Ukraine now.
00:04:32.300 And when I came here as a young person, I believed in the value as an American not to be afraid of my government.
00:04:41.880 But I wanted to tell you, and I want to share with you and get your thoughts on that.
00:04:47.220 Are you aware that a lot of Americans are now afraid of being prosecuted by your department?
00:04:54.560 Are you aware about that?
00:04:56.440 Are you aware of that?
00:04:59.000 I'm just saying, are you aware or not?
00:05:00.520 I think that constant attacks on the department and saying that...
00:05:07.620 It's not attacks.
00:05:08.300 Well, let me give you an example.
00:05:09.700 I don't know what...
00:05:10.160 We talk about January 6th.
00:05:11.760 I'm sorry?
00:05:12.240 Here, some people came on January 6th.
00:05:14.520 There probably were some people that came on January 6th here, you know, that had bad intent.
00:05:20.260 But a lot of good Americans from my district came here because they were sick and tired of this government not serving them.
00:05:29.200 They came with strollers and the kids, and there was a chaotic situation because the proper security wasn't provided.
00:05:35.360 That's a question that was answered, really, why?
00:05:37.960 Why we debated for 55 minutes on the floor and didn't stop the debate after the people broke into the Capitol.
00:05:44.940 But these people came, they were throwing the smoke bombs into the crowd with strollers with kids.
00:05:52.360 People showed up, you know, FBI agents, to people's houses.
00:05:57.240 You had in my district, in my town, FBI phone numbers all over the district.
00:06:03.360 Please call.
00:06:04.400 Call that.
00:06:05.380 People are truly afraid.
00:06:06.980 I just want to make sure, if you're not aware, that you are.
00:06:09.820 And this is a big problem when people are afraid of their own government.
00:06:15.200 Speaker of the House, Rhino Kevin McCarthy, is in a fight to keep his job as Speaker.
00:06:20.960 House Freedom Caucus members have had enough of his dissembling and delays.
00:06:25.740 McCarthy denying Ukrainian President Zelensky's request to address Congress to beg for more money.
00:06:32.980 McCarthy originally said he wouldn't even meet with Zelensky as he's fighting his own battle to avoid a government shutdown.
00:06:39.820 It turns out McCarthy, behind closed doors, did take a meeting with Zelensky and Marxist Dem Hakeem Jeffries.
00:06:47.860 Zelensky obviously looking for more of those American taxpayer billions.
00:06:53.340 Politico is reporting that also behind closed doors, small groups of centrist Democrats,
00:06:59.700 I can't think of a single one who I'd call centrist,
00:07:02.500 are holding secret talks with several of McCarthy's allies on the Republican side
00:07:08.200 to strike a last-ditch deal to avoid a government shutdown.
00:07:12.740 That deal would include McCarthy selling out to the Marxist Dems.
00:07:17.220 We'll see, but it's getting interesting.
00:07:19.700 Joining us now is a man who opposes any deal with the Democrats, Congressman Keith South.
00:07:24.820 Great to have you with us, Congressman, on The Great America Show.
00:07:27.600 Kevin McCarthy reaching out across the aisle, trying to apparently work with Marxist Dems to avoid that government shutdown.
00:07:35.720 You even have Republican senators who are talking about McCarthy possibly crossing the aisle.
00:07:41.900 Your thoughts?
00:07:43.340 Well, I was encouraged as of last night's conference meeting, but today I have to agree.
00:07:48.420 If we can't pass the DOD bill, we're going to have to find a way forward because we must pass the appropriations bill.
00:07:58.000 So we have eight days left before shutdown, and we need to get after this and get it done.
00:08:03.700 Well, get after it and get it done.
00:08:06.460 This has been 365 days since we saw this little theatrical process go forward.
00:08:15.300 We then had this spring the debt ceiling argument.
00:08:21.380 I mean, every Congress in my career has had to fight over the budget.
00:08:28.300 So as Congress limps toward what some are saying will be an absolutely guaranteed shutdown, what are your thoughts?
00:08:35.520 Well, I think we need to support the movement, and we're trying to decide how best to do that.
00:08:40.160 But there is a movement across this nation, Lou, of people that are so frustrated with the federal government.
00:08:46.200 They're frustrated with the spending.
00:08:48.180 They're frustrated with the inflation that's been inflicted on them.
00:08:51.540 They're frustrated with the weaponization that is targeting them.
00:08:55.340 They're frustrated with the two-tiered system of justice.
00:08:59.660 And I'm trying to decide how we best to support, how we encourage this movement across America.
00:09:06.940 It may not be what people think it is, but we've got a committed group of conservatives that are looking for that answer.
00:09:15.300 Well, that's music to my ears.
00:09:18.260 Now the question is, what does the movement want, and what will the Congress deliver?
00:09:23.980 Well, I will tell you, in my telephone town hall just two nights ago, the shutdown, the CR, was badly swamped by the border.
00:09:34.100 The border, the border security, the border enforcement is the issue that swamps everything else.
00:09:40.980 And you've seen in the last day what it means to Texas and Arizona.
00:09:45.780 I mean, there is a 60-square-mile colonia growing in Texas.
00:09:51.400 There is, they're now using one of the iconic parks in America, Central Park, to house illegal aliens.
00:09:59.040 In Arizona, we hear they're dropping them off of the street.
00:10:02.460 This is, this is the issue that I think the American people will rally around.
00:10:08.360 Well, what is best to secure that border?
00:10:10.880 Is it to fund it, or is it to absolutely withdraw the money from the Biden regime that has refused to secure it?
00:10:18.560 Well, the Biden regime is lawless.
00:10:22.100 They don't, they think Congress is irrelevant.
00:10:24.800 They think the border is irrelevant.
00:10:26.680 They think the law is irrelevant.
00:10:28.940 So more funding, while we do have more funding for 3,000 more agents, more funding is not the answer.
00:10:36.840 The question is, how do we get the Biden administration to obey the law, to execute the law as they are sworn to do?
00:10:45.120 Lou, I've been to the border twice, and I can tell you the lawlessness is real.
00:10:51.280 The U.S. side at midnight was littered with the wristbands, the people that had paid the cartels, $8,000, $10,000, $12,000 to come across.
00:11:00.420 It is an open border regardless of what Mallorca says.
00:11:04.400 That is the policy of the Biden administration.
00:11:07.260 Well, part of the issue here, then, is why would we, to me, as you're speaking, and by the way, I would agree with you,
00:11:17.740 why fund an agency like the Border Patrol or a department like Homeland Security,
00:11:23.100 why fund it at all when it is a lawless, empty charade of a government agency?
00:11:31.900 This is just crazy what's going on in this country, and the American people, they are now, they're not woke,
00:11:39.300 but they are sure as heck awakening to what is happening.
00:11:43.780 Yeah, I mean, that's the discussion we're having.
00:11:47.100 If we get H.R. 2 minus E-Verify, if we got a strong H.R. 2, which was our strong border bill, put into a bill, whatever,
00:11:56.740 then we have the issue, if we defund it, how are they going to execute it?
00:12:00.180 But I believe that this administration will only respond to funding, cuts in funding, taking away their money.
00:12:09.300 I think that's the only thing that we respond to.
00:12:11.680 They don't respond to subpoenas.
00:12:13.900 Their secretaries come in front of our committees and basically lie to the American people.
00:12:19.220 How do you get them to execute the law?
00:12:21.860 That's the question.
00:12:23.360 Well, there's, and I, again, I agree with you 100%.
00:12:26.580 I wouldn't even begin with a position of whether or not I was going to shut down the government.
00:12:31.120 If I were in Congress, I would say, why in the world should I not shut down the government?
00:12:37.640 It's doing nothing for the American people, and it's destroying this country.
00:12:42.280 You're talking about the border.
00:12:43.960 I mean, watching a little child in New York who was overdosed in his daycare because of fentanyl.
00:12:53.780 And Eric Adams, the mayor, he's almost weeping.
00:12:58.120 This is the same, sorry, silly little Marxist dem who wants to be a sanctuary city,
00:13:05.400 and now he doesn't understand why his city is filled with fentanyl, sex trafficking, and outright chaos.
00:13:12.480 Every other state in the country is feeling, almost every other state is feeling the same thing.
00:13:17.820 We're talking with Congressman Keith Self.
00:13:20.020 We're coming right back after these quick words.
00:13:22.240 Please stay with us.
00:13:22.940 We're back.
00:13:29.480 We're talking with Congressman Keith Self.
00:13:31.400 And, Keith, I want to just turn to you to ask you, what's it going to take for the conference to come together around principles
00:13:40.760 and the purpose of absolutely securing the border, returning this country to normalcy, and protecting the republic itself?
00:13:54.760 Well, the first thing we've got to do is pass the appropriations bills at some level
00:13:59.380 because the government will be funded at some point, at some level.
00:14:05.480 So the next big fight we have once we get through this is with the Senate
00:14:10.180 because the Senate already tells us they want to spend more money.
00:14:13.180 So we need to tighten our seatbelts.
00:14:15.880 We need to learn to say no.
00:14:17.860 We need to find a way through, which to me is passing the appropriations bills before September the 30th.
00:14:23.780 I want to gavel in at 6 a.m. in the morning and gavel out whenever we finish.
00:14:28.720 I want to stay until we get the job done.
00:14:31.100 We've got 11 bills to pass in eight days, and it looks like we're going to spend today with not passing a bill.
00:14:39.340 So we've got 11 bills to pass in seven days.
00:14:42.980 That's going to take an effort, but that's what we have got to do.
00:14:46.940 And what will be the effect of that appropriation bill, and at what level of funding will it be?
00:14:53.900 That's the discussion.
00:14:55.040 There are two levels.
00:14:55.700 Frankly, at this point, I am more concerned about the policy riders because the Senate is going to bring back a much larger figure in any case,
00:15:05.240 and we're going to have to set down markers with the Senate that we are not going to budge either on the policy positions,
00:15:13.480 the policy riders, or on the amount because I will tell you we must go back to pre-COVID levels of budgeting.
00:15:22.400 We have had blowout years since COVID.
00:15:26.680 These numbers are so inflated, we could probably cut 20 percent and not even miss it.
00:15:32.780 Now, the administration will make any shutdown, any temporary pause in non-essential services as difficult, as painful as possible,
00:15:40.940 but we have got to go back to pre-COVID levels because we are blowing through a trillion dollars every few months.
00:15:47.900 We're looking at a Federal Reserve that is still got eight and a half trillion dollars on its balance sheet.
00:15:54.600 We're looking at a Federal Reserve who's driving up the price of money through the discount rate.
00:15:59.620 We're looking at almost all-time high levels of yields for the past 40 years, certainly.
00:16:08.560 In the bond market, we are looking at punitive consequences here if the fiscal policy of this country isn't brought in order.
00:16:20.460 And I frankly, no matter the best of intentions, and I know, Congressman, that you have the best of intentions,
00:16:27.640 and I believe that most of your conference does,
00:16:29.800 but I don't see how in the world we survive the Biden administration when they can come up with $1.7 billion omnibus bills
00:16:39.300 with the leadership of the Republican leadership of the Senate, cutting deals there.
00:16:45.060 Your speaker comes away with what we thought would be a terrible $2 trillion budget gap.
00:16:53.280 He permits Biden to have a $4 trillion gap.
00:16:56.920 The leadership of your party is out of its mind.
00:17:02.300 Lou, I want to point to what I'm calling TNT.
00:17:05.940 That's dynamite, TNT.
00:17:07.940 My two examples are President Trump.
00:17:10.720 He's been indicted four times, and yet his numbers are holding steady and even growing.
00:17:15.360 Why?
00:17:16.020 Because he fights.
00:17:18.260 And let's look at Senator Tuberville.
00:17:19.960 He has held up since March because DOD is breaking the law.
00:17:25.860 He has held up the confirmations of military officers.
00:17:29.580 Now, frankly, those officers, most of them have been moved into the positions already.
00:17:33.600 They just don't wear the rank, don't get the pay.
00:17:36.100 But he has said, no, those are my two heroes in the government today.
00:17:42.160 Trump is holding steady because he fights,
00:17:45.060 and Tommy Tuberville is giving the example that the Republican Party needs.
00:17:49.060 And let me go back to Obamacare.
00:17:52.320 Obamacare changed this nation.
00:17:53.980 I think everyone would agree with that.
00:17:56.120 And after Obamacare, 60 Democrats lost their seat in the House of Representatives.
00:18:01.260 I don't see that same commitment in the Republican conference today.
00:18:05.100 And the conference itself right now, we learned that Zelensky's meeting was Speaker McCarthy.
00:18:13.000 This is after the Speaker denied his request to speak before a joint session at Congress.
00:18:19.660 Who knows what your Speaker is going to do?
00:18:23.240 And there is talk emanating from the Republicans in the Senate that your Speaker will unite with the Marxist Dems if necessary to move through a budget.
00:18:36.740 Your reaction?
00:18:38.660 Well, there's a small group of our conference that has said at a microphone that they will join the Democrats to pass a clean CR.
00:18:47.580 To me, they effectively leave the Republican Party, and I think that we need to be thinking about how we replace them in vulnerable Democrat seats for the next election because that is unthinkable.
00:19:02.320 That is not a governing model.
00:19:04.560 We need to use the power of the purse that we have, and if we're unwilling to do that, then we cannot govern.
00:19:11.940 We've got to learn to use the power that we have in 218.
00:19:15.600 But our conference is so fractured right now.
00:19:18.860 How do we get it back?
00:19:20.400 We start passing bills.
00:19:23.040 I think that, first of all, I want to say amen, brother, because you're exactly right.
00:19:29.560 And God bless you for taking that position.
00:19:33.680 And I don't understand why somebody doesn't say that in leadership, that if you do step aside from the conference, that you're out of it.
00:19:42.280 Not only the conference, but the party.
00:19:43.740 But the leadership is so weak-kneed and spineless and unprincipled that I don't know how you extricate the country from what is the problem of the fractured Republican Party.
00:19:58.400 Were it unified on the issues and the values, we could have, in prospect, prosperity, peace, or even a defense bill.
00:20:13.340 What do you think of that?
00:20:15.380 Well, I think that we're talking inside Washington baseball right now, Lou.
00:20:19.860 That goes back to my point about the frustration around the country.
00:20:25.080 A major conservative leader here in the city spends a lot of his time outside the city, and he tells me that he sees this movement.
00:20:33.280 I hear it from members of Congress.
00:20:35.200 Our people are so frustrated with the federal government.
00:20:38.020 But they are going to lead this movement, not the politicians here in Washington, D.C.
00:20:43.920 We need to be encouraging them.
00:20:45.820 We need to be supporting them.
00:20:47.400 But frankly, I think the people were going to have to speak to this issue before it's resolved, not the politicians in Washington.
00:20:55.560 We're talking with Congressman Keith Self.
00:20:58.060 We're coming right back after this quick message, and when we return, we'll be talking about the Congressman view of what is the solution and what will happen over the next eight days.
00:21:09.640 Stay with us.
00:21:10.460 We'll be right back.
00:21:16.820 We're back.
00:21:17.760 We're joined by Congressman Keith Self.
00:21:19.820 It is so nice to hear a voice of reason and principle, and you're thinking for a conference that desperately needs your thinking.
00:21:30.760 Give us your sense of what you think the next steps are and what will happen, not what should, but what you think will happen.
00:21:37.780 I honestly don't know, Lou, but I will tell you I heard the green shoots of desperation last night in the conference that we must start passing bills.
00:21:48.220 Well, that may have been in danger during our vote this morning, and I understand that.
00:21:54.600 But I think that's what causes people to put aside their differences and say we've got to do something.
00:22:01.080 And I think passing bills is our strongest position with the Senate.
00:22:06.740 Our conference is starved for leadership.
00:22:10.480 There is no doubt about it.
00:22:11.860 But last night in conference, I heard some people step up and start giving leadership points.
00:22:18.220 And, frankly, my military background tells me that in times of danger, in times of intense danger, unexpected leaders do step forward.
00:22:28.360 They do start offering leadership because the survival of the unit depends on it.
00:22:33.660 And I started to see those green shoots last night, and I hope that those are encouraged.
00:22:38.260 And, frankly, I want to see some people step forward and provide that leadership to our conference that we need because we are starved for it.
00:22:45.660 Can you name names here?
00:22:48.560 No, I prefer not.
00:22:50.420 That's up to the people involved.
00:22:53.040 But, again, I was encouraged last night because we need that leadership.
00:22:58.900 People that have been here, that they've been through the trenches, they understand just how desperate our situation is.
00:23:05.380 So, as I look at what's going on in this conference, and I harken back to the mid-'90s with Newt Gingrich when he was Speaker,
00:23:17.440 and much came from that rebellion, 2010, a small rebellion, but poorly managed, and some of it was astroturf, despite what some of the Tea Party organizations said.
00:23:31.460 They became basically the property of the Republican establishment party.
00:23:36.660 I personally do not see a way forward if you continue to fund the Biden administration.
00:23:44.940 It is corrupt.
00:23:46.620 And here's my thinking.
00:23:48.020 I'd like you to tell me what's wrong with it.
00:23:50.380 The Biden administration is thoroughly and pervasively corrupt throughout the entire federal government.
00:23:55.540 They have turned every policy choice that they've made against the United States and Americans.
00:24:02.600 And to not meet them through the investigative committees as well as standing your ground on financing more madness from the Marxists, I don't know where you go, irrespective of leadership.
00:24:17.220 Your thoughts?
00:24:18.020 Well, if you go back to that era, remember that Bill Clinton was under threat of impeachment when he bent.
00:24:27.020 And I think that that is a possibility that we need to move also as quickly as we can with the impeachment inquiry.
00:24:34.240 We are finding real substantive evidence of the Biden crime family.
00:24:41.280 We also need to be moving that forward because that might help us.
00:24:45.440 Of course, time is short.
00:24:46.360 We're not talking about the next eight days there, but that is something.
00:24:51.700 And I think you're right, Lou.
00:24:53.640 This will take severe changes in leadership.
00:24:58.700 And I would like to challenge our leadership, our entire leadership, starting with a speaker.
00:25:03.620 We have a tremendous opportunity to lead in the next eight days.
00:25:07.820 If our leadership will simply buckle down, lead this conference rather than asking what everybody wants, we need to pass these bills.
00:25:16.980 I will tell you, impeachment in my district was 76 percent in our recent telephone town hall.
00:25:25.660 Seventy six percent.
00:25:26.920 I think we ought to be moving forward with impeachment.
00:25:29.800 Well, I and I think most Americans agree based on the polling, certainly not including the Democratic votes.
00:25:37.720 But we also know that 70 percent of all voters understand that the political persecution of Donald Trump is politically motivated.
00:25:47.900 There is no I truly believe there's no misinformation, disinformation at all in the public about what is going on in this country.
00:25:57.440 And they're sick of it.
00:25:58.440 And I agree with you.
00:25:59.380 This movement is about moving this government to a level it hasn't been in decades.
00:26:06.060 You know, Congressman, we really appreciate you being with us.
00:26:09.480 And we know you've got some very tough issues to deal with here.
00:26:12.200 You and your entire conference.
00:26:14.700 We wish you the best of luck.
00:26:16.520 And we always give our guests the last word here, Congressman.
00:26:20.160 So if you will, your concluding thoughts.
00:26:23.140 Well, Republicans always want to fight the next battle.
00:26:26.240 Well, our next battle is now.
00:26:29.960 We've got to find a way through this or our republic is in danger.
00:26:34.560 And I want to just encourage your listeners to contact your elected officials.
00:26:39.000 It makes a difference.
00:26:40.940 Contact them.
00:26:41.740 Contact them again.
00:26:42.780 Contact every one of them.
00:26:44.340 It makes a difference.
00:26:45.480 And I just encourage your leaders, your listeners, that a republic can only survive with an informed and engaged citizenry.
00:26:54.660 And we cannot give up.
00:26:56.280 This is not a football game where the last two minutes, there is no fourth quarter.
00:27:01.020 There is no last two minutes.
00:27:02.940 We keep fighting.
00:27:04.940 Thank you, Congressman Self.
