Summary

Comedian and podcaster Duncan Campbell joins Jemele on the show to talk about how much he's getting paid to do stand-up comedy, and why it's not enough. He also talks about why he doesn't want to be paid for his standup comedy and why he does what he does for other people. And he also explains why he's doing it for the right reasons and why you should be grateful you're getting paid for what you're doing. It's a good one, and it's a really good one. You can't ask for much more than that, and you're not going to get more than $150 for your time and your time management skills. You're not gonna get more generous than that. And that's not even close to what he gets paid for doing stand up comedy and hosting other people's shows. And if you don't get paid for it, you're going to have to pay for it yourself, right? We also talk about the difference between being generous and being stingy, and what it means to be a good host, and how to balance it all. And how to make sure you're giving back to the community you're trying to support. And how much money you're actually getting paid, not just for the time you spend doing standup. We hope you enjoy this episode and that you enjoy it, and that it doesn't make you feel good about what you do it. Thank you for listening to this episode. -Jon Sorrent. 00:00:00.000 And we're back to wrap it up.
00:00:16.000 We just stepped outside.
00:00:18.000 Sacrified the sacred plant to the fire gods.
00:00:21.000 Try to put Brian in a better state of mind.
00:00:24.000 I think you feel like a lot of people are attacking you.
00:00:27.000 I get attacked a lot nowadays.
00:00:30.000 I know you do.
00:00:30.000 We talked about that earlier, but we're not attacking you.
00:00:33.000 And one of the things that I think that's real important that I brought up earlier is be generous to a point where it's indefensible.
00:00:42.000 Be generous to a point where, you know, people know that what you're doing is you're doing it all for the right reasons.
00:00:48.000 I think if you're a listener, you know that already, what I do for comedy.
00:00:52.000 And that was the one thing I started screaming at Duncan was like, you don't understand how much I do for comics.
00:00:56.000 My free time is devoted to 100% of doing shit for free for other comics.
00:01:00.000 Now, if they don't see that...
00:01:02.000 I would tell you this, though, but there's a lot of clubs over the years that have had this theory that, well, you're lucky to be getting the stage time.
00:01:08.000 And a part of comedians, we don't respect ourselves, so we're like, absolutely, you're absolutely right.
00:01:12.000 But that other part is like, fuck.
00:01:14.000 Yeah, but I'm also not driving to Pasadena fucking editing audio software for you.
00:01:18.000 I'm not fucking doing all this shit.
00:01:20.000 That's not the same as saying, like, yeah, you should be happy to be in this room.
00:01:23.000 Listen, bro, what you're doing, Listen, this is what you're doing.
00:01:26.000 You set up a beautiful thing.
00:01:27.000 It ain't bad.
00:01:29.000 There's nothing wrong with it.
00:01:30.000 And when I ask you about how many shows you want, just to sort of illuminate people as to what you're doing.
00:01:36.000 I like what you're doing.
00:01:37.000 I like a lot of shows that come out of what you're doing.
00:01:40.000 But I think that we have to always be very careful that if there's any money that's ever taking place in any sort of a thing where you're selling comedy, comedians get super defensive and super sensitive when you're selling a show and the comics are going to go up and do their stand-up and they're not going to get compensated from it, but yet they know that money is exchanging hands.
00:02:03.000 Well, it's a show that people don't use as a workout room for the most part.
00:02:07.000 These are people that are just like fucking around, like not actually like I'm selling.
00:02:11.000 And plus the fact that there's like seven or eight people usually on each one of these shows.
00:02:15.000 I think it's a little different than if I were like, hey, me, Ari, and you are doing a show at the Hollywood Improv.
00:02:20.000 It scales.
00:02:20.000 It's definitely scales.
00:02:20.000 Well, you wouldn't get to do that.
00:02:21.000 First of all, the reason why you get to control this money at all is because I gave it to you.
00:02:26.000 Because I don't...
00:02:27.000 I'm not paying you to rent that place out.
00:02:30.000 And since then, I'm like, look, I'll give you all my money from my shows.
00:02:33.000 So the shows will sell out.
00:02:36.000 The shows I do are 90% of the shows that go on there.
00:02:38.000 Well, I do them every week.
00:02:39.000 Usually, you're not there every week.
00:02:41.000 Okay, let's not say 90%.
00:02:43.000 It's more than half.
00:02:44.000 More than half.
00:02:44.000 And it's more than pays the rent.
00:02:47.000 The idea being that I think...
00:02:50.000 When a comic knows that you're...
00:02:52.000 Even if you're only making $150 to a comic that's like, why doesn't he make $50 and give us $50?
00:02:57.000 That's how they think.
00:02:58.000 You're selling stand-up comedy.
00:03:00.000 And this is why the fact that you guys are doing all this, to me, I'm like, alright, bottom line, each one of these shows for going in there and being there for five hours, for going in there and putting together all these comics, putting up advertising and making posters for it, all this...
00:03:19.000 All this shit, if it's not worth $150, if it's not worth $150, then I'm not doing it.
00:03:26.000 If I'm getting this much trouble for $150, fuck it then.
00:03:30.000 I'm not doing it anymore.
00:03:30.000 Wait, but hold on, hold on.
00:03:32.000 At $15 a ticket, $150, even at 60%, that's 20 tickets.
00:03:36.000 I'm saying the average after-tax.
00:03:39.000 Uh-huh.
00:03:39.000 That I get after paying the host in comics or whatever is usually about $150.
00:03:47.000 Well, look, if you're spending money paying the comics and you feel good about that, you could sit down with them and say, look, I'm paying you.
00:03:53.000 Because you know what?
00:03:54.000 The only reason what it is, it's whoever you heard it from or whatever whispers you heard it from.
00:03:59.000 And Duncan, for some reason, who's been on one show, I think.
00:04:03.000 We're going to pay the comedy store for $15.
00:04:04.000 Yeah, but Duncan's been on one show, I think.
00:04:05.000 We like it.
00:04:06.000 We like the $15 we get at the comedy store.
00:04:08.000 Right.
00:04:08.000 Yeah.
00:04:08.000 It's just like, oh, cool.
00:04:09.000 It's something nominal to say.
00:04:10.000 I get it.
00:04:11.000 You want it.
00:04:11.000 I get it, man.
00:04:12.000 I get it.
00:04:13.000 But I'm just saying that after that...
00:04:14.000 I know what you're saying.
00:04:15.000 You're saying that you...
00:04:16.000 It's not worth it to me.
00:04:17.000 I don't give a shit.
00:04:18.000 You're saying you're doing a good thing by creating this spot for them to warm up and they don't appreciate that.
00:04:22.000 And that if you're not at least getting something out of it, like $150, you're not going to do it.
00:04:25.000 Or just doing it.
00:04:26.000 Honestly, you know how hard it is devoting almost every Friday to being somewhere and on fact of that, being on there for five or six hours?
00:04:35.000 That's called a job.
00:04:36.000 I completely understand that.
00:04:38.000 On the worst night ever.
00:04:39.000 But to comedians, they're also doing a job too.
00:04:42.000 And they're also selling something valuable, their work and their material.
00:04:45.000 And they know that even though you are putting together a promotion, the promoter shouldn't be the only one that's getting money out of it.
00:04:50.000 No, and they don't.
00:04:51.000 Well, we need to work that out.
00:04:53.000 That should be an indefensible position.
00:04:55.000 No, you know what it should be?
00:04:55.000 It should be each one of the comics that come on it either goes, hey, can I get $20?
00:05:00.000 I'm like, okay.
00:05:01.000 Well, you want them to ask for money?
00:05:03.000 No, no.
00:05:04.000 If you are somebody that are like, no, I think I need to be paid, I think I need to deserve it, compared to me, I will do almost any show for free.
00:05:13.000 I never care about fucking money at all.
00:05:16.000 Okay, Brian, but you're fair.
00:05:17.000 Hold on, but then you're saying I need to get this $150.
00:05:20.000 What's that?
00:05:20.000 Hold on, just so you know, $30 to an MC is 20 paid tickets after taxes.
00:05:25.000 I get it, but for comedy, I don't want to get paid for the most part.
00:05:28.000 I don't think that I need to get paid.
00:05:29.000 I have fun with it.
00:05:30.000 So then why don't you give out this money to people?
00:05:32.000 Huh?
00:05:32.000 Why don't you give out the money to people?
00:05:33.000 Give them 20 bucks a piece.
00:05:34.000 Give them 40 bucks a piece.
00:05:35.000 That's what I do.
00:05:36.000 But you haven't been doing that.
00:05:38.000 Yes, I have.
00:05:38.000 I haven't gotten that since the first time we did that show.
00:05:40.000 Why do you think that?
00:05:41.000 But that was what you were saying.
00:05:42.000 You said you only paid the hosts.
00:05:44.000 No, I paid hosts in any comics that I know.
00:05:47.000 How many people have asked for money?
00:05:48.000 Okay, but just because they're poor doesn't mean there's less or more deserving of that money.
00:05:51.000 If I do a spot for 15 minutes, I don't care if you do a spot for 15 minutes too, Joe.
00:05:56.000 I don't deserve that more or less than him.
00:05:57.000 No, no, no one.
00:05:59.000 The only time I really ever pay somebody is if I know for these shows.
00:06:05.000 If I know this person, I would appreciate it.
00:06:09.000 You know, like, dude, thank you so much, man.
00:06:10.000 You know, I fucking have no money and stuff like that.
00:06:12.000 But when it's somebody that's pretty comfortable, like, I feel like I'm very average-paced.
00:06:18.000 Like, if it's something like me, because it's pretty comfortable, I don't want you to pay me, and I'm not doing it for money.
00:06:23.000 That's your decision.
00:06:24.000 And this show has always been like when, hey, I got this room in the ice house.
00:06:29.000 You want to do it?
00:06:30.000 It's like a workout room.
00:06:31.000 Totally.
00:06:31.000 I consider this more like, do you want to come to a really good audience at a workout room?
00:06:35.000 Yeah.
00:06:36.000 Well, then here's what you should do.
00:06:37.000 Not a show.
00:06:37.000 Charge no cover.
00:06:38.000 Tell the ice house, hey, give me 150 bucks.
00:06:40.000 I'll pack this place.
00:06:41.000 Charge no cover and there's no problem.
00:06:43.000 Absolutely.
00:06:43.000 That's a great idea.
00:06:44.000 Terrible idea.
00:06:45.000 Yeah.
00:06:45.000 Great idea, because you know why?
00:06:47.000 I'm not in it for money.
00:06:48.000 I'm not in it for money.
00:06:50.000 I charge five bucks, and I keep it as low as possible.
00:06:52.000 Anybody who asks for a comp, I give it to them, and I still give the rest to charity, because I don't want the responsibility.
00:06:58.000 Somebody else can completely do the desk watch show there.
00:07:02.000 Brian, it's very difficult to say you're not in it for money and then say you need a certain amount of money or you won't do it.
00:07:07.000 Because in my opinion, if I had to be asked, hey, every Friday you have to...
00:07:13.000 The work you'd put into it.
00:07:13.000 Yeah.
00:07:14.000 If you have to go here, you have to sit here and record work.
00:07:18.000 And then those podcasts usually go from like three to five hours.
00:07:22.000 Well, not the podcast, because some people don't...
00:07:24.000 Oh, those podcasts...
00:07:25.000 I think the move is to put it all in the hands of the Ice House.
00:07:28.000 Give the Ice House the contact numbers for all the people that want to be on the show.
00:07:32.000 Well, that's what I do.
00:07:32.000 That's what I do.
00:07:33.000 Have them pay it.
00:07:33.000 That's what I do.
00:07:34.000 Whenever I don't want to do it.
00:07:35.000 They don't pay either.
00:07:36.000 They pay their headliners a hundred bucks, those Ice House people.
00:07:38.000 Do they really?
00:07:39.000 Well, it's...
00:07:40.000 It was always a thing.
00:07:41.000 A hundred bucks for headliners.
00:07:42.000 Except for when you or Gabriel would come in.
00:07:44.000 These comedy clubs aren't making that much fucking money.
00:07:45.000 They have to pay the staff.
00:07:46.000 They have to...
00:07:48.000 It's true.
00:07:49.000 That place especially has got so much history behind it.
00:07:51.000 That place has been around for 50 plus years.
00:07:53.000 It's such a great place.
00:07:54.000 But I think that we've got to be real considerate of comics and the fact that comics have a legitimate gripe when it comes to worrying about someone making money.
00:08:04.000 I mean, it has to be explained, I think, in a...
00:08:07.000 In a thoughtful manner, and not in this knee-jerk, sort of angry, yelly, sort of shouty type of way.
00:08:14.000 Live in front of other people when you don't even come to me and talk to me.
00:08:17.000 I thought we were friends.
00:08:18.000 Fuck you, Duncan Trussell.
00:08:19.000 Oh, come on, man.
00:08:20.000 See, this is exactly what I'm talking about.
00:08:23.000 Fuck Duncan Trussell.
00:08:24.000 Stop, man.
00:08:25.000 Stop.
00:08:25.000 Look, this is this kind of...
00:08:27.000 Why?
00:08:28.000 Because he told you on a podcast.
00:08:30.000 Because he's, you know what, I'm just done.
00:08:31.000 I've done so much for that dude and he just pretty much attacked me.
00:08:34.000 I was like, fuck him.
00:08:35.000 Well, you know what, if he had no point, no place to stand, if he had no point, if he had no place to talk to you about this, there was no argument there, then it would have no impact.
00:08:48.000 The reason why it has somewhat of an impact is because it is an arguable position.
00:08:52.000 Is there ever a way to talk about it where someone says, let's just say this argument, say, hey, so-and-so, you should pay this much money to so-and-so, and instead of going like, what the fuck, I do this and this, instead of going that, I go, well, hmm, let me think about that.
00:09:03.000 Why should I or shouldn't I pay this person this much money or less money or more money and just have a nice conversation about it?
00:09:08.000 Yeah.
00:09:09.000 That's why I don't think it's worth it to me.
00:09:11.000 Well, I think you took on a job that you didn't quite know how much time it was going to take.
00:09:15.000 I did just go on stage.
00:09:16.000 It's a lot of effort.
00:09:18.000 Just to call the people and schedule the times and have them come in, I wouldn't want to do it.
00:09:25.000 I went from going to doing open mics with a lot of these people that I have on these shows or just going to different clubs and doing stage time and never doing real shows with these people.
00:09:37.000 So when I decided to take on this crazy shit, it was more like, hey, I got access to this room.
00:09:43.000 I can make a show and we can get all together and we can have a show once a week.
00:09:47.000 It'd be cool.
00:09:48.000 So you didn't think of it as a financial decision at all.
00:09:51.000 It was just for fun.
00:09:52.000 Absolutely.
00:09:52.000 One of the things we were talking about, though, when we had this conversation with Madrigal and you there at the Ice House those nights, one of the things we were all saying is, and we'll just take the money.
00:10:01.000 Not them.
00:10:02.000 We will.
00:10:03.000 It'll be us.
00:10:04.000 But how many tickets would you have to sell to get $150 at $15 apiece?
00:10:08.000 Average, I think that thing holds $75 or something like that.
00:10:11.000 Sometimes they stuff in a lot.
00:10:13.000 So 10 people and you only get, you take taxes out of that?
00:10:16.000 So you only get 60% of that?
00:10:17.000 Huh?
00:10:18.000 I'm trying to think how many tickets you would have to sell to go over that $150 mark.
00:10:23.000 I have no idea.
00:10:25.000 I don't know.
00:10:25.000 I don't get 100% of the door.
00:10:26.000 You get 60% of the door.
00:10:27.000 I think so.
00:10:28.000 Something like that.
00:10:29.000 Dude, I don't want to talk about any of this shit anyway.
00:10:31.000 Well, I think I made a mistake.
00:10:32.000 I literally don't want to talk about it.
00:10:33.000 I made a mistake as well, and I just handed it over to you.
00:10:36.000 Because the first couple of shows, I was getting paid for it.
00:10:39.000 But when I just handed it over to you, I should have said, let's sit down and figure out where this should go.
00:10:44.000 And that we should have the rent paid for, and the insurance, and all the other bullshit.
00:10:48.000 You know what?
00:10:48.000 To me, it's not even worth it to me.
00:10:51.000 I'll go somewhere else once a week and do comedy somewhere else and enjoy myself and not get paid for it and just have fun.
00:10:57.000 The last thing I'm going to do is like, thank you so much for letting me have the stage time.
00:11:01.000 Fucking, you should pay me.
00:11:02.000 What the fuck?
00:11:03.000 I'm going to talk about it.
00:11:03.000 No, no.
00:11:04.000 That's not the way people are saying it.
00:11:05.000 They're just saying, Brian's going to be one of those guys that's not paying comedians.
00:11:09.000 Yeah, but it just feels like that because you feel attacked all the time.
00:11:12.000 You can't have a regular conversation.
00:11:13.000 I am attacked.
00:11:14.000 Have you not been looking at Twitter?
00:11:15.000 I'm getting attacked by fucking...
00:11:17.000 Jay Moore.
00:11:18.000 I'm getting attacked by Duncan Trussell.
00:11:20.000 I'm getting attacked by fucking Jay and James.
00:11:22.000 I'm getting attacked by everybody.
00:11:24.000 What does that mean, attacked?
00:11:25.000 What does that even mean?
00:11:27.000 Not exactly.
00:11:28.000 What does that mean?
00:11:29.000 They're saying a thing they don't like about something you do.
00:11:32.000 I'm going to fucking do this to you.
00:11:34.000 I'm going to do that to you.
00:11:35.000 There's a path with least resistance out there.
00:11:38.000 I know it.
00:11:39.000 It's called not bringing it up on a podcast and getting into it so everyone knows about this.
00:11:42.000 Thanks a lot, guys.
00:11:43.000 What are you talking about?
00:11:45.000 Ryan, what are you talking about, man?
00:11:47.000 You make it impossible to talk to you about anything when you react this way.
00:11:50.000 You turn this into some crazy situation that it's not.
00:11:53.000 I can understand you don't want to book a comedy show.
00:11:56.000 I can understand it being a tremendous time-consuming thing.
00:12:00.000 I don't want to book it.
00:12:00.000 Well, listen, let's all talk about this and figure out a way where we can have a show that the Ice House books.
00:12:07.000 They're professionals.
00:12:08.000 That's what they do.
00:12:09.000 You know, what I might do is I might do an Ice House Chronicles, and I will make it just, you know, some other thing.
00:12:15.000 I'll make it just like a green room while somebody else can do the room, and I'll have nothing to do with that room.
00:12:20.000 So Brian, just so you know, this reaction we're getting from you is the normal reaction we get from you when we bring something up.
00:12:25.000 So does that make it more likely for us to bring things up to you or less likely?
00:12:28.000 To be open and honest.
00:12:29.000 I tell you why.
00:12:30.000 Because honestly, I am so fucking busy that I don't even need to deal with any of this.
00:12:36.000 I would rather just do this podcast, be happy, do everyone else's podcast, be happy, and not have something that's such a big deal that I thought was just helping friends out.
00:12:45.000 I think you got a good point.
00:12:47.000 I think you got a good point in that.
00:12:48.000 I think it is a lot more responsibility and a little extra thing that you have to chew on every week.
00:12:55.000 And I think it can still be done and done through the Ice House.
00:12:58.000 This way, the Ice House pays people and we'll set aside a chunk of it so you can get paid for running the Ice House Chronicles while the show is going on.
00:13:07.000 Plus pay the guy.
00:13:08.000 Plus pay the guy $40.
00:13:10.000 You know what?
00:13:11.000 Or I can just do the exact same thing I was doing and any comic that wants to get paid, I'll give them money.
00:13:18.000 Oh man, you can't ask people to ask for money.
00:13:20.000 No, I don't.
00:13:20.000 You know what I do?
00:13:21.000 Half the time I go, hey, you want some cash?
00:13:23.000 And then they go, no, dude.
00:13:24.000 And I'm like, okay.
00:13:26.000 How many times did that happen?
00:13:27.000 A lot more than you would think, Ari.
00:13:29.000 Well, I've never done that to me.
00:13:31.000 I gotta get out of here.
00:13:32.000 You've never offered me money that I've turned out, so no, don't worry about it.
00:13:35.000 It's not stupid.
00:13:36.000 People are talking about it.
00:13:37.000 You don't want to become one of those guys that doesn't pay people.
00:13:39.000 I don't even feel like talking about it.
00:13:41.000 I know, you know, that's why it's hard to bring up.
00:13:43.000 That's why saying I'd like to get paid, it's a hard thing to bring up.
00:13:46.000 But Brian isn't a podcast.
00:13:47.000 It isn't boring.
00:13:48.000 To me, podcasts should be entertaining, not like, hey, let's bust open Brian and fucking see why he's thinking about financial shit.
00:13:55.000 No one's trying to bust you open.
00:13:56.000 Open on a podcast?
00:13:57.000 If we were at a fucking restaurant, we could talk about all this.
00:14:00.000 I don't feel like dealing about this on a podcast.
00:14:02.000 Sorry.
00:14:02.000 I bring stuff up to you outside the podcast.
00:14:04.000 Let's talk about your fucking paychecks.
00:14:05.000 Let's talk about what you do for a living.
00:14:07.000 It's very understandable, Brian, but do you understand that you get into this really angry, defensive position with people that aren't even attacking you?
00:14:15.000 Okay.
00:14:16.000 Do you understand that you do that sometimes?
00:14:18.000 Listen, man, it's avoidable sometimes.
00:14:20.000 You can talk in a rational tone.
00:14:23.000 I mean, I've been guilty of it as well.
00:14:25.000 All the drama that's happening in your life is easily avoidable.
00:14:28.000 There's fights to the death with like seven people right now.
00:14:31.000 You don't need all that.
00:14:32.000 Brian, what you're doing is a great thing.
00:14:34.000 What you're doing with your podcast network for those guys, they should be happy.
00:14:37.000 Those Chronicle shows are great.
00:14:38.000 I'll drive out there just to do it.
00:14:40.000 Yeah, and what you said about Freddie Lockhart needing the network to get him on, that is true.
00:14:45.000 It is all true.
00:14:46.000 Should they lead with you every time and say, hey, just so you know, you do a lot of great things for me, but I'd like to bring up this one thing?
00:14:50.000 Would that help?
00:14:52.000 If you guys don't think that what I do helps comedy or helps comics...
00:14:57.000 It does.
00:14:58.000 You're reading us any negative comment as you must hate everything about it.
00:15:02.000 If you think there's a better Death Squad idea, I would gladly change the name of Death Squad to something just to make you happy.
00:15:08.000 It's not even that.
00:15:10.000 Death Squad is you.
00:15:11.000 You're a part of Death Squad.
00:15:12.000 You know, all of our friends are part of Death Squad.
00:15:14.000 The fact that you and Duncan don't talk right now is disgusting.
00:15:17.000 You know what?
00:15:17.000 And that's called trimming fat.
00:15:19.000 He's done a few things in the past that I've let go, and you know what?
00:15:22.000 I don't need that guy.
00:15:23.000 I've helped that dude so many times, and I've been on his podcast once.
00:15:26.000 Well, listen, Duncan is no perfect person, but I love that guy to death.
00:15:30.000 I'm no perfect person either, and neither are you.
00:15:32.000 I think we can avoid these kind of conversations in the future if we just calm down a little bit, man.
00:15:38.000 And what I said about being...
00:15:41.000 Being inarguably generous.
00:15:42.000 You don't have to be inarguably generous.
00:15:43.000 You can have a straight deal with people.
00:15:45.000 You don't have to say, I'm going to give you all my profits.
00:15:47.000 I'm not saying all the profits.
00:15:48.000 I'm saying just completely reasonable.
00:15:50.000 That's fine indeed, but why are we talking about this on a podcast?
00:15:52.000 That's what I'm talking about.
00:15:53.000 We should be talking about fucking farts in Olive Garden.
00:15:56.000 We don't have to talk about only farts and all, Brian.
00:15:59.000 This is a good conversation for all of us.
00:16:03.000 It's a good conversation for me to understand that sometimes you don't feel like you're getting enough credit for all the work you're doing for all those guys that are on your network.
00:16:11.000 You've built this It's a platform where a lot of people find you.
00:16:14.000 Find people because of that platform that you've built up.
00:16:15.000 And I've been very supportive of it, Brian.
00:16:17.000 And I've been trying to help it.
00:16:18.000 And I talk about it all the time on this podcast and tell people to subscribe to it.
00:16:22.000 And I tell people to subscribe to it on Twitter.
00:16:24.000 And that's the only way to get it.
00:16:26.000 The Ice House Chronicles is to go through Death Squad.
00:16:28.000 No one's trying to stop it.
00:16:29.000 It doesn't mean everything you've ever done with it is completely the right way to go.
00:16:32.000 You have to be able to bring up something in order to get better.
00:16:35.000 Yeah, we're not trying to stop anything.
00:16:37.000 We're just talking.
00:16:38.000 The Ice House thing can all be worked out.
00:16:40.000 And I think it's a huge burden on your back too financially when it comes to figuring out who gets paid and taking taxes out and shit.
00:16:48.000 It's just not worth it.
00:16:48.000 That's not worth it.
00:16:49.000 I just wanted to do comedy.
00:16:51.000 I'll tell you what you can avoid.
00:16:53.000 If you slap everybody 10 bucks, then they'll feel a lot more appreciated.
00:16:56.000 You know what?
00:16:57.000 I just need an employee to go and actually do that for me.
00:16:59.000 We'll talk about this after the podcast.
00:17:01.000 We need to hire you an assistant, so let's get going with that.
00:17:05.000 What's that Asian guy?
00:17:06.000 What does he do?
00:17:06.000 That guy, he's gone with the wind.
00:17:09.000 Dust in the wind.
00:17:11.000 All we are is dust in the wind.
00:17:14.000 I'm sorry if this was uncomfortable, ladies and gentlemen.
00:17:16.000 Very uncomfortable, but unnecessarily uncomfortable.
00:17:18.000 It didn't have to be, and Brian needs to know that we all love him, and he's doing a good thing.
00:17:23.000 I think that's what it is.
00:17:24.000 You don't realize that people still like you if they mention any sort of critique, but they still do like you.
00:17:29.000 Last thoughts, Brian?
00:17:30.000 Please be positive.
00:17:33.000 Last thoughts, Brian?
00:17:37.000 Uh...
00:17:37.000 Fuck Duncan Trussell.
00:17:39.000 Oh, come on.
00:17:40.000 How dare you?
00:17:41.000 After all that, you go to fuck Duncan Trussell?
00:17:44.000 Yep.
00:17:44.000 Come on, let's think of something positive.
00:17:46.000 How to end this positive.
00:17:49.000 Uh...
00:17:52.000 Go buy Ari's shirt.
00:17:53.000 It's awesome.
00:17:54.000 It's not for sale yet.
00:17:56.000 Oh yeah.
00:17:56.000 In two weeks or something like that.
00:17:58.000 Summise this, Brian.
00:17:59.000 Wrap it up.
00:17:59.000 Bring it all home.
00:18:00.000 Bring it all home in a positive way.
00:18:02.000 The fans know.
00:18:03.000 No, it's not a contest.
00:18:04.000 There's no fight.
00:18:05.000 Don't make fights.
00:18:06.000 Yeah, what do you mean the fans know?
00:18:08.000 They know how much I work for you guys.
00:18:14.000 They know how much you work for us guys?
00:18:16.000 You're an interesting cat, Brian.
00:18:18.000 They know.
00:18:19.000 They know the time I put in doing all this shit.
00:18:21.000 Yeah, everybody knows the time you put into it.
00:18:23.000 Brian, it's not bad.
00:18:26.000 Right, so you wouldn't say I'm stealing from comics, would you?
00:18:30.000 Brian, I've never said you're stealing from comics.
00:18:32.000 I know you did because he did.
00:18:34.000 When Duncan said that, he was out of line.
00:18:36.000 And he was upset at you because he was making an argument about South by Southwest.
00:18:40.000 And he didn't feel that you should have been interjecting what you were saying when his whole argument was about they offered him to come out there and not pay him.
00:18:48.000 It's a silly, emotional thing between two guys that got dragged out in a public way that was unfortunate and unnecessary.
00:18:55.000 He shouldn't have done that.
00:18:57.000 You acted in a very, you know, angry and, you know, fucking violent way, and I had to actually separate the two of you guys.
00:19:04.000 I mean, the whole thing was crazy.
00:19:05.000 No, you didn't.
00:19:05.000 I was trying to leave the room, and you wouldn't let me leave the room.
00:19:08.000 What are you talking about?
00:19:09.000 You were pushing towards him.
00:19:10.000 No, I was screaming at him with my finger pointed towards his direction.
00:19:13.000 You were moving towards him to the point where I had to stop you.
00:19:15.000 What am I going to do?
00:19:16.000 I don't know if you're going to do anything.
00:19:17.000 I didn't think you were going to do anything.
00:19:18.000 But you were so mad.
00:19:20.000 I was mad.
00:19:21.000 Alright.
00:19:21.000 And that's why I say...
00:19:22.000 Why be so mad?
00:19:23.000 Duncan Trussell.
00:19:24.000 Brian.
00:19:25.000 And just be like, nah, you're wrong.
00:19:26.000 Brian, you know we love you, right?
00:19:27.000 Yep.
00:19:27.000 Do you know we love you?
00:19:28.000 Yep.
00:19:29.000 I think sometimes you don't, Brian.
00:19:30.000 We really do appreciate the work you do.
00:19:32.000 We can't do a lot of shit without you.
00:19:33.000 If we give you a big hug right now, are you going to feel better?
00:19:35.000 No.
00:19:36.000 No, he's going to feel way more uncomfortable.
00:19:38.000 No big hugs?
00:19:39.000 No.
00:19:39.000 Alright, we'll see you tomorrow.
