00:01:10.000 This is a very fascinating subject.
00:01:13.000 You're talking about that things don't exist in isolation, that everything is somehow connected.
00:01:23.000 I've always sort of intuitively suspected that that was the case.
00:01:29.000 There's probably something to that.
00:01:31.000 But to hear a person like you say it, it makes me much happier.
00:01:35.000 Like, okay, maybe I'm on the right track.
00:01:38.000 What gives you this inclination, and why did you want to write about this?
00:01:43.000 Yeah, I'm not surprised to say so because that you sort of feel that that makes sense.
00:01:50.000 Because, in a sense, is what we're used to, right, in our everyday life.
00:01:54.000 We interact with persons, and persons are the way they interact with us and them, their relations and stuff.
00:02:03.000 We always see things from our own perspective.
00:02:07.000 Then, somehow, science, physics in particular, seemed to be telling us, okay, no, no, yes, okay, there is all this perspective, but there is an objective.
00:02:15.000 Fixed reality down there.
00:02:17.000 We can look at it from the outside, it is made by little things, each one with its own properties.
00:02:25.000 Except that in the evolution of physics itself, in relatively recent time, the last century with quantum mechanics, this idea of an objective reality doesn't work much.
00:02:39.000 And so, in a sense, we're going back to a more intuitive picture of the world.
00:02:45.000 The very idea of an objective reality down there.
00:02:48.000 Might be wrong.
00:02:48.000 In fact, I think it's wrong.
00:02:49.000 And I think that's what quantum mechanics is telling us.
00:02:53.000 So, when you say objective reality, meaning the reality that we're seeing and experiencing, that this is just a tiny fraction of what's real, or that we're getting a distorted perception of what's real?
00:03:04.000 We are getting a perception, a perspective of what is real.
00:03:07.000 I mean, I see you.
00:03:08.000 You're real, of course.
00:03:08.000 I see this pen.
00:03:09.000 This pen is real, of course.
00:03:10.000 I'm not denying that there is some reality.
00:03:13.000 But the way you see the pen is different from mine, of course, just because you see it from the other side.
00:03:17.000 So, you have a perspective.
00:03:19.000 And the question is Do all this perspective match perfectly into a unique objective reality of the pen?
00:03:27.000 And I think quantum mechanics telling us no.
00:03:31.000 Reality is this ensemble of perspectives.
00:03:34.000 So the properties of the pen, where it is, its color, how long it is, all the properties of the pen are not really properties of the pen.
00:03:40.000 It's how the pen looks to you, how the pen looks to me, not just you and me as human beings, how the pen clashes with another pen, how it affects another pen.
00:03:50.000 So we should understand, I think.
00:03:54.000 Reality as this network of interaction, how things look to everything else, which is a more beautiful picture of reality than just, you know, we being outside and looking from the outside.
00:04:04.000 We are inside reality.
00:04:05.000 We are part of reality.
00:04:07.000 So, what we see is just a part of how things interact with one another, it's how they interact with us.
00:04:13.000 So, when you're talking about objective reality, so one of the problems that human beings have is our senses, and we assume that our senses see everything that's There to be seen.
00:04:26.000 That doesn't really make sense.
00:04:27.000 It seems like we see and hear and touch and feel everything we need to see to stay alive.
00:04:35.000 Yeah.
00:04:36.000 To some extent, our senses are reliable, of course, right?
00:04:39.000 I see a cap there.
00:04:40.000 If I want to pick it up, I use the cap.
00:04:42.000 You put it down.
00:04:42.000 It's hot.
00:04:43.000 The problem is that if we take our senses too literally, too seriously, we are wrong.
00:04:43.000 Right.
00:04:49.000 And we know we're wrong.
00:04:49.000 I mean, so many cases we find out we're wrong.
00:04:53.000 The reason I love science is when it corrects us in some big way.
00:05:02.000 Think about that.
00:05:03.000 Think about the sunset.
00:05:05.000 Sunset is marvelous.
00:05:07.000 You sit by the ocean, you see the sun going down, going down, going down.
00:05:11.000 It's beautiful, the sky becomes dark.
00:05:12.000 So the sun goes down.
00:05:14.000 But science has talked to us that's not really what happens.
00:05:19.000 The sun doesn't move, it stays there.
00:05:21.000 It's actually us, the earth.
00:05:25.000 It's a big rock that is.
00:05:27.000 Spinning, and we are moving out of the light of the sun.
00:05:31.000 And if you see the sun going down and you remember that, you can think about that.
00:05:36.000 You say, Oh, my senses cheat me in telling me that the sun is moving, but it's not moving, I'm moving.
00:05:42.000 So that's a good example in which science has told us that things are not exactly like we see, they're in a different manner.
00:05:50.000 I've always wondered what's the evolutionary benefit of the beauty of sunsets?
00:05:55.000 Why are they so beautiful?
00:05:57.000 Like, what is it about it that's so inspiring and so magnificent?
00:06:01.000 And it does something to people.
00:06:04.000 It does something to people.
00:06:05.000 It makes you feel different.
00:06:06.000 When the sun rises in the morning, you feel different.
00:06:08.000 It has an effect on you.
00:06:10.000 And I've always wondered, like, what is the purpose of that?
00:06:14.000 Like, why does that exist?
00:06:16.000 Like, food tastes great because it's nutritious.
00:06:19.000 You eat an orange, it's delicious because it's really good for you.
00:06:23.000 There seems to be something to beauty, especially natural beauty, like mountains, like.
00:06:23.000 Yeah.
00:06:29.000 When I look at them, I'm like, why is it so good to look at these?
00:06:34.000 Why does it feel so good?
00:06:35.000 Like, there's something to it.
00:06:37.000 There's some weirdness that you can't just chalk off to measurement.
00:06:43.000 There's something going on.
00:06:45.000 That's a great question.
00:06:48.000 I love this question.

00:06:50.000 I mean, of course, sunset and sunrise are crucial for us because we've been designed by evolution through millennia, hundreds of millennia, thousands of millennia.
00:07:04.000 To sleep in the night and go around in the day, which is just what our speeches do, cats do the opposite.
00:07:12.000 So they are certainly important for us.
00:07:15.000 But our relation with the world, and I think you're putting your finger on it, is not about knowledge about what to do.
00:07:24.000 It's always emotional, right?
00:07:25.000 I mean, food raises emotion.
00:07:28.000 We like it.
00:07:30.000 So I don't know exactly where the emotion of sunset and sunrise comes from, but certainly the fact we have it.
00:07:37.000 Have it points to the fact that if we have to understand ourselves and our relation with the world, we have to look at our emotions a lot, not just what we know, what we don't know.
00:07:49.000 We have an emotional relation among ourselves and with things in the world, with mountains, with animals, with wild animals, with little things and one another.
00:08:02.000 And then the rational part comes on top of it to say, oh, let's correct it, let's do it a little bit better.
00:08:08.000 It used to, I'm not.
00:08:09.000 Deny the utility of the rational part, but it's an addendum to what we are.

00:08:17.000 The really weird thing for people that are studying the world must have been the understanding of quantum physics.

00:08:26.000 That must have thrown the whole thing into a giant tizzy because now you're like, okay, well, at the lowest level, observable level, the smallest observable level of reality, you have magic.

00:08:40.000 Physics was supposed to be the path to objectivity, right?
00:08:45.000 Physics is what guarantees that, all right, we're emotions, perspective, my view, your view, but down there there's physics.
00:08:53.000 The world is just simple down there.
00:08:56.000 There's stuff, there are atoms moving around, there are forces, and that's it.
00:09:00.000 And then, last century, during the 20th century, the physicists discovered that no, no, that's not the case.
00:09:10.000 The wall down there is even more perspectival, more complicated than in our everyday life.
00:09:18.000 It was really hard.
00:09:19.000 I mean, the physicists were very confused at the beginning of the century because they were making all this measurement on atoms, on radiation, electrons and stuff, and trying to make sense of it.
00:09:29.000 And they couldn't, they couldn't, they couldn't.
00:09:30.000 And then at some point, I think it was Niels Bohr, a Danish first one, who said, Well, we have to change the metaphysics here.
00:09:39.000 It's not just an issue about writing the right equation.
00:09:42.000 The right force.
00:09:44.000 We have to change the way we think about the world.
00:09:46.000 Once again, okay?
00:09:47.000 Like when we thought the Earth moved, or when we realize the fields, electric fields, we change the way profoundly we think about reality.
00:10:00.000 And quantum mechanics is one of these jumps.
00:10:03.000 Now, Joe, we're still debating about us, right?
00:10:07.000 Physicists are debating about themselves, and philosophers are debating what the hell we have understood with quantum mechanics.
00:10:14.000 Quantum mechanics is telling us the world is not what we thought it is.
00:10:18.000 And there is a conversation that's going on, a debate, sometimes furious.
00:10:23.000 And somebody says, oh, you know, there is this immense wave function of the universe, other universe, and stuff like that.
00:10:32.000 Trying to hang on to the existence of something absolutely objective down there, trying to multiply reality to make it objective.
00:10:40.000 But I think it's this dream of an absolute objectivity which is a mistake.
00:10:46.000 The dream of an absolute objectivity is a mistake.
00:10:49.000 That's really fascinating.
00:10:52.000 When they first started understanding that observing quantum interactions changes them, how long did it take for them to even accept that?
00:11:07.000 How many times did they have to run those experiments with particles and waves with observers versus not before they said, okay, something's going on here?
00:11:17.000 Or it seems that when we watch things, it has an effect on them, an immeasurable effect.
00:11:23.000 This is a real thing that's happening.
00:11:25.000 This isn't woo woo.
00:11:27.000 No, it's not voodoo.
00:11:30.000 Exactly.
00:11:31.000 It's not just smoking joint and getting high.
00:11:35.000 These are the physicists, the ones who were supposed to be the most rational, objective guys involved.
00:11:39.000 Well, what happened is that measurement piled up all through the first 20 years of the 20th century.
00:11:48.000 The measurement was a simple measurement, right?
00:11:50.000 Atoms emit light, and the light has special colors.
00:11:55.000 This color is a spectrum of the light, and they were trying to make sense of that.
00:11:58.000 I mean, how does the electron move to produce that light?
00:12:02.000 It didn't work, didn't work, didn't work.
00:12:05.000 Then in Copenhagen, there was a school in which they were debating almost that.
00:12:10.000 Niels Bohr is the first one who started saying, look, to understand the atom, we should not just look at the atom.
00:12:18.000 We should understand how we look at it.
00:12:20.000 If we look at it in one way, we see one thing.
00:12:22.000 If we look at it another way, we see another thing.
00:12:24.000 That was very confused.
00:12:26.000 But then what happened is that mathematics for describing the atoms came out.
00:12:31.000 This is the theory, the mathematical theory of quantum mechanics.
00:12:34.000 It works very well.
00:12:35.000 It's used today everywhere.
00:12:37.000 I mean, we talk with this microphone.
00:12:39.000 There's quantum stuff inside.
00:12:40.000 There are circuits designed with quantum properties of matter.
00:12:45.000 So quantum mechanics is solid.
00:12:48.000 We know how to use it.
00:12:49.000 It tells us if you do this, you see this.
00:12:51.000 If you do that, you see that.
00:12:54.000 But it doesn't tell us in between.
00:12:57.000 You do this, and then if you do one thing, you see one thing.
00:13:00.000 If you do another thing, you see another thing.
00:13:02.000 And it doesn't give a story of what happened to the electron, to the quantum system itself.
00:13:08.000 So people got confused.
00:13:10.000 The physicists got confused.
00:13:14.000 They started discussing how to think about that.
00:13:17.000 So, quantum mechanics is a strange theory.
00:13:18.000 We know how to use it.
00:13:20.000 It's like a black box, but we don't know what's inside the box.
00:13:25.000 It gives the right answer, but we can't make a picture in our mind of what happened in the atoms, in the things, in the electronic circuits.
00:13:33.000 Even in a quantum computer, we don't know really what happened inside.
00:13:37.000 That's so strange.
00:13:38.000 Yes, but it works fantastically.
00:13:41.000 And so, physicists disagree, and some say, you know, there are extra variables that we are.
00:13:46.000 Principle impossible to see who are that's some somebody who says that who determines what happened and they are a priori invisible.
00:13:56.000 Other says you know there are parallel worlds in which words, worlds, I know your tongue, sorry.
00:14:04.000 Yeah, um, then there are others, me including, me included, who think no, no, no, it's uh, it's really philosophical here.
00:14:14.000 We have to get rid of the idea that there is something there just by itself.
00:14:19.000 What, what.
00:14:20.000 What is there is what affects me or what affects you or what affects another piece of matter.
00:14:26.000 So we have to think of reality as processes of things affecting one another, relations, relations.
00:14:35.000 And you know, in a sense, down there, the simple physics is more like our everyday life than what we imagined in thinking that it was so objective and abstract.
00:14:51.000 Everyday life, you know, who are you?

00:14:55.000 You're what I see, what he sees, what people listen to you.
00:14:58.000 You're a multiplicity of things.
00:15:00.000 Which one is the real one?
00:15:02.000 Well, you are this collection of perspectives on you, including your own perspective on yourself.
00:15:11.000 There is no final one.
00:15:14.000 What is a final description of you?
00:15:15.000 Or what is a final description of a cup of water?
00:15:18.000 Is that the one given by chemistry, by physics?
00:15:21.000 Which physics?
00:15:22.000 Quantum physics, quantum gravity?
00:15:25.000 By. psychology.
00:15:28.000 A cup of water is because we drink, that's why we call a cup of water.
00:15:31.000 So, it's a human picture of what is going on.
00:15:34.000 Which one is the final one?
00:15:36.000 I don't think there is a final one.
00:15:38.000 There is a collection of perspectives on the same cup of water, and that's a cup of water.
00:15:46.000 So, when they first started measuring this observer effect, what was the reaction?
00:15:53.000 Like, how long did it take for them to accept it?
00:15:55.000 Because that seems like such a completely new chapter of science.
00:16:03.000 It worked so well that people accepted even if it was confused.
00:16:11.000 Could you explain to people that maybe don't know what we're talking about how those experiments work?
00:16:16.000 This was the first experiment with atoms.
00:16:20.000 People had this idea that an atom is a nucleus, a central nucleus, and electrons moving around.
00:16:30.000 So the property for the atom, the way it makes molecules, the way it produces light, had to be computed from the movement of the electrons.
00:16:41.000 And the mathematical theory was developed for doing that.
00:16:46.000 And then people started making experiments in laboratories about how atoms move, how molecules move, small things move.
00:16:54.000 And the mathematical theory predicts them perfectly.
00:16:57.000 And the mathematical theory predicts the property of matter.
00:17:04.000 The success was really spectacular.
00:17:05.000 Let me just tell you one example of the success.
00:17:10.000 You remember the periodic table of the elements?
00:17:13.000 Yes.
00:17:14.000 We had it in, I don't know, in Italy, we had it in primary school, we had it on the classroom, on the wall, hydrogen, helium, all the.
00:17:14.000 Right?
00:17:22.000 There are about 100 atoms, 100 elements, and everything we see is just a composition of these 100 elements.
00:17:30.000 This is what the chemists have figured out through the 18th, 19th, 20th century.
00:17:36.000 All right, so why these 100 elements?
00:17:38.000 Why those particular.
00:17:40.000 Why this strange structure of the periodic table of the element?
00:17:40.000 Properties?
00:17:45.000 You know there are two, and then seven, and then this is a peculiar structure.
00:17:49.000 Well, turn out, if you use quantum mechanics, you just write an equation and bingo, it has exactly a number of solutions, one per each element.
00:17:57.000 So you understand exactly what is going on.
00:17:59.000 You understand why there are these elements.
00:18:01.000 You can predict the elements.
00:18:02.000 People, in fact, could predict properties of the element without having measuring them, before measuring them, and then check.
00:18:10.000 That's magic of physics, right is that you predict things Before seeing them, the electromagnetic waves that we use to send your broadcast all over the planet, these electromagnetic waves, well, they were not discovered by seeing them.
00:18:28.000 They were predicted by Maxwell and Hertz.
00:18:33.000 They wrote a question and said, well, if you do that, you make a little circuit with some electricity that goes on, then the other side of the room, you can have another one, and there's a wave that goes by, and bingo, it worked.
00:18:44.000 And then it worked between Europe and the US.
00:18:47.000 You can send waves.
00:18:49.000 You can predict things.
00:18:50.000 That's the strength of science.
00:18:52.000 Black holes were discovered in the sky, but not because somebody said, oh, look, there's a black hole.
00:18:58.000 They were predicted by Einstein.
00:19:00.000 So because of the equations of gravity, blah, blah, you should expect to see black holes.
00:19:05.000 And then they were found.
00:19:06.000 So there is this extraordinary predictive power.
00:19:11.000 Today, an engineering that put together circuits, quantum circuits, doesn't have to go trial and effort.
00:19:19.000 You make a calculation, it predicts what's going to happen.
00:19:21.000 It works.
00:19:22.000 It works fabulously.
00:19:23.000 So quantum mechanics works.
00:19:25.000 It gives good predictions.
00:19:27.000 The question is that you can have something that works very, very well and you don't know why.

00:20:58.000 You have a wall with two holes, two slits, okay, and you send one particle from one side to the other side.
00:21:04.000 Okay, that's easy.
00:21:07.000 You can try to do many times.
00:21:09.000 It goes through one of the two slits and it gets to the other time.
00:21:13.000 Now, if you look which slits it goes through, it only goes through one slit or the other.
00:21:19.000 Okay, so never both, never so if you go through one and you check, it goes through one and the other.
00:21:25.000 So far, so good.
00:21:27.000 But then it's a magic.
00:21:30.000 If you send it, the particle can't go to one point on the screen of the other side.
00:21:38.000 If you have one screen open, it can go to the same point if you have one hole open.
00:21:46.000 It can get to the same point if you have the other hole open, but it does never get there if you have both open.
00:21:53.000 And that's, if you start thinking, the more you think, the more it makes no sense at all.
00:21:58.000 Because if you can get there through one hole, why cannot it go there if two holes are open?
00:22:06.000 Okay?
00:22:07.000 So the only possibility is that in some senses go through both.
00:22:12.000 And somehow part goes through one, part goes through the other, and the two parts forbid each other to go to that particular thing.
00:22:19.000 But then you look at the two holes, and it never goes through both, only one.
00:22:24.000 Now, do you find this confusing?
00:22:26.000 Yes.
00:22:27.000 And for a century, people have been confused about that.
00:22:31.000 The way out is that the question, where is the particle if you're not checking, if it's not interacting with something else?
00:22:31.000 So what's the way out?
00:22:42.000 It's a wrong question.
00:22:44.000 There's just no particle.
00:22:46.000 The particle is only the effect it has on the screen, on the detectors.
00:22:53.000 You cannot make sense of the particle as something which always has a position.
00:22:57.000 It only has a position when it interacts with something else.
00:23:01.000 That's a mystery of quantum mechanics, the magic of quantum mechanics, and a challenge to our idea of an objective, always existing particle independent of its interaction.
00:23:14.000 What do you think is happening?
00:23:17.000 Do you have any theories of what is happening that's causing it to behave differently when observed or when measured?
00:23:30.000 So, the measurement itself is something.
00:23:33.000 Something is going on.
00:23:35.000 It interacts with the measurement and it changes the way it makes a pattern.
00:23:40.000 Yes.
00:23:41.000 But it's not the measurement in the sense of some physicists making a measurement, it's just the interaction with anything.
00:23:49.000 It's a.
00:23:51.000 If there's something to interact with, or if there isn't, the physics is completely different.
00:23:59.000 And if there isn't, the question where the particle is is a badly posed question.
00:24:06.000 So the particle is something, we shouldn't think of the particle as an entity which always has a position.
00:24:12.000 We should think of it as an entity like it snaps here and then it snaps there and it snaps there.
00:24:17.000 And when it snaps is when it hits something.
00:24:21.000 These naps are connected by.
00:24:25.000 We can predict probabilistic where they're going to happen, but if we ask what happened in between, it makes no sense.
00:24:32.000 The particle is just these interactions.
00:24:35.000 Do you think we'll ever understand what's happening?
00:24:37.000 Yes, I do.
00:24:39.000 I do because historically, every time we have found something strange, it seemed.
00:24:50.000 Totally incomprehensible at first, and then we get used to it and we start learning.
00:24:56.000 Let me give you an example.
00:24:57.000 Uh, this is much older, even even you know.
00:25:00.000 I don't think science is modern stuff.

01:47:59.000 My own job, my own physics job, is to mix quantum mechanics and general relativity.

01:48:12.000 I think you mix them by taking them seriously.
01:48:15.000 So, quantum mechanics is so successful that it's telling us something about the world.

01:48:28.000 Gravitational waves, expansion of the universe, time, the fact that times your head is more than times your feet, and so on and so forth.
01:48:36.000 So it's all come out to be right.

01:48:40.000 And quantum mechanics works so well.
01:48:42.000 All our technology is based on quantum mechanics.
01:48:43.000 It has to be right.
01:48:45.000 So then the question is how do they fit together?

01:48:54.000 There's this aspect of this that goes together with this aspect of this.
01:48:58.000 That has been the work of my life.

01:49:01.000 And a theory me and my friends have come out with is called loop quantum gravity.
01:49:06.000 It's a way of solving this problem.
01:49:09.000 We're not sure it's right, right?

01:49:18.000 It's a way of bringing together quantum mechanics and Einstein theory.
01:49:22.000 It gives some predictions.

01:49:34.000 The question is what are the quantum properties of gravity?

01:50:08.000 And that's useful for understanding what happened inside the black holes, what happened to the early universe.

01:50:15.000 You know, black holes, if you let them there for a very, very long time, they evaporate, they become smaller and smaller.
01:50:21.000 So what happened at the end of the evaporation?
01:50:23.000 These kind of questions need quantum gravity.
01:50:27.000 What do you think happened before the Big Bang?
01:50:31.000 Okay, so first, we don't know.
01:50:36.000 I think it has to be said clearly because it's good to speculate and maybe in 10 years we will know.
01:50:45.000 It's not impossible to know, but for the moment we don't know.
01:50:48.000 There are two possibilities.
01:50:51.000 One is that genuinely there was nothing before the Big Bang.
01:50:56.000 So time started there.
01:50:58.000 This is what Stephen Hawking worked a lot on this possibility.
01:51:04.000 He expected that to be the case.
01:51:07.000 The other possibility is that there was something before the Big Bang.
01:51:12.000 And the intuitive idea is that you have a universe.
01:51:15.000 Collapsing, falling down into itself, getting to a very, very compressed stage and then bouncing out.
01:51:21.000 And we see the bouncing out.
01:51:23.000 And if I had to bet now, I'm not sure, but I would bet for the second one.
01:51:29.000 From the equations, that seems to be what was the case.
01:51:34.000 And do you think this is a constant process of expansion and compression?
01:51:38.000 No, because I think that if we do this jump that you just did, we're making the usual mistake as soon as you understand something to think that.

01:51:51.000 If you live in a valley and ask, well, I've never seen what's behind the hill, you look behind the hill, you see something else, say, oh, I get it.

01:52:27.000 When you saw the James Webb telescope, the more newer discoveries of these galaxies that formed far earlier than they should have, did that give you pause about the date of the universe?
01:52:38.000 Because some people have speculated that perhaps the date is wrong, that the date of the Big Bang.
01:52:45.000 Yeah, I know, but I think it's more plausible that there were primordial black holes that gave rise to these early galaxies.
01:52:53.000 So there's an explanation.
01:52:55.000 There is an explanation within the same dates, which is possible, that when the universe was very, very.
01:53:02.000 That we know a lot of confidence, right?
01:53:05.000 There was a time about 12, 13, 14 billion years ago that the universe was much compressed, much hot, and fluctuating a lot.
01:53:18.000 So at that time, it's very possible that many black holes formed.
01:53:25.000 Early galaxies were generated by black holes formed at that stage.
01:53:29.000 That seems to me the most plausible answer.
01:53:35.000 I'm not a cosmologist, so it's not really my field, but it's close I try to follow.
01:53:41.000 So it would be that our understanding of what it takes to form a galaxy is incorrect?
01:53:48.000 Yeah.
01:53:49.000 Or the time it takes.
01:53:50.000 That's right.

01:53:51.000 So, you know, during my life, something that has been realized is that not only that there are black holes all over the sky, when I was a student, people didn't believe in black holes.

01:54:17.000 And the book said, well, there's probably nothing real in the universe that corresponds to that.
01:54:23.000 The first people who started thinking, actually, that thing up in the sky that we see could be a black hole was in the 70s.
01:54:32.000 It was very interesting because, you know, there are a lot of binary. system in the sky, two stars rotating around one another.
01:54:40.000 So you actually see the movement of two stars.
01:54:43.000 And there were some funny things in which you just saw one star dancing around something which was not seen.
01:54:52.000 So people said, well, maybe there's a black hole.
01:54:55.000 It's dancing around the black hole.
01:54:56.000 It was speculative.
01:54:59.000 Then there were the quasars, some very intense signals that are coming from very far away that people couldn't understand what they were.
01:55:06.000 And people said, well, if it was a black hole, the matter falling into the black hole could Radiate very strongly, and we could see that.
01:55:15.000 The actual evidence grew very slowly in the 80s and 90s.
01:55:24.000 In 2000, I moved back from America to Europe.
01:55:30.000 I arrived in France, and the director of the department was a particle physicist, a very good particle physicist.
01:55:38.000 And I said, I'm working on black holes.
01:55:41.000 And he said, Carlos, you don't believe the black holes are real.
01:55:44.000 2000.
01:55:45.000 So, still physicists, very respectable physicists, didn't believe the black holes were real.
01:55:52.000 That's so late.
01:55:53.000 It's very late.
01:55:54.000 It's very late, yes.
01:55:55.000 At that point, the relativists, the cosmologists, the astrophysicists were taken very, very seriously.
01:56:01.000 Now we have pictures of black holes.
01:56:03.000 So now there's no doubt.
01:56:05.000 I mean, physicists have doubt about everything.

01:56:07.000 Are any of those old professors still alive?
01:56:12.000 Yeah, but they changed their mind.
01:56:13.000 I mean, scientists changed their mind.

01:56:39.000 But then we discover these colossal black holes, gigantic, which are usually the center of the galaxy.
01:56:47.000 And we have two pictures of black holes one, the black holes in the center of our galaxy.
01:56:52.000 And then another black hole much bigger in another galaxy, more far away.
01:56:57.000 It's beautiful pictures, right?
01:56:59.000 They were on the front page of the newspapers a few years ago.
01:57:04.000 So when this was realized, there are these black holes in the center of the galaxies, then the question came immediately to everybody, every good scientist is it a galaxy that forms and then creates a black hole in its center?
01:57:20.000 Or is it actually the black hole that starts, you know, Then it forms a galaxy around it.
01:57:26.000 It's not yet completely resolved what is the role of the black hole in the galaxy.
01:57:31.000 And I think these very, very early galaxies could be just a product of black holes coming out of the very early stages of the universe.
01:57:40.000 The craziest theory that I've ever heard was that in the center of every galaxy is a supermassive black hole.
01:57:45.000 And that could be, if you went through that black hole, you go into a whole other universe filled with hundreds of billions of galaxies, each with a black hole in the center of it.
01:57:55.000 You go through each one of them, hundreds of billions of galaxies, each with a black hole.
01:57:59.000 Then it's just that's true infinity.
01:58:02.000 uh yeah that's a crazy theory it's a beautiful theory in fact there's a good friend of mine who worked a lot and maybe even started that series lee smolin um i am not convinced i think that um i don't know we don't know but i i think that if you if you jump into a black hole um you just uh you don't go to another universe after a long time you come out in in our own universe so a black hole is
