Summary

Boxing Hall of Fame inductee and former world champion Dwight "The Cobra" Kawasaki joins us to talk about his career and life after the sport. Dwight also talks about his retirement from boxing and what it was like being a professional boxer in the late 80s and early 90s, and why he never thought he'd make it back to the ring again. He also discusses his plans for an upcoming exhibition in Japan and what he's looking forward to in 2020, and how he feels about the current state of boxing in the United States and the state of the sport in general. Finally, Dwight talks about why he doesn't think he'll ever fight again, and who he'd like to face in a fight in the future, and if he'd even be interested in a light heavyweight fight again. 00:00:03.000 Boom, and we're live.
00:00:04.000 What's up champ?
00:00:05.000 How are you?
00:00:05.000 I'm great.
00:00:06.000 How are you doing?
00:00:07.000 I'm great, man.
00:00:07.000 It's a pleasure to meet you.
00:00:08.000 I've been a fan forever.
00:00:10.000 Oh, good.
00:00:11.000 I've seen every single fight you've ever had.
00:00:13.000 So for me, it's an honor to have you in here, man, as a giant boxing fan.
00:00:18.000 All the way back to Dwight Kawi.
00:00:21.000 Saw you fight in the Olympics.
00:00:22.000 Saw everything.
00:00:23.000 Everything, man.
00:00:24.000 Yeah, you did.
00:00:25.000 Yeah, for real.
00:00:26.000 And I understand you're going to do an exhibition now.
00:00:29.000 Well, yeah, I'm preparing for one, you know, me going over to Japan and being able to go over there and see the Tawhon, whatever that...
00:00:44.000 Tsunami?
00:00:45.000 Tsunami.
00:00:45.000 Yeah.
00:00:46.000 And the point is in the tsunami, going over there and helping people, and I figured, why not do an exhibition?
00:00:54.000 Right.
00:00:54.000 So it's like a benefit for the tsunami victims?
00:00:57.000 Yes.
00:00:58.000 You look great.
00:00:59.000 You're in great shape still.
00:01:01.000 Well, thank you.
00:01:02.000 You never got out of shape?
00:01:03.000 Well, yeah.
00:01:04.000 Art of the game.
00:01:05.000 Yeah.
00:01:07.000 It's easier to maintain than rebuild.
00:01:09.000 Easier to maintain than rebuild, yeah.
00:01:11.000 But now, at your age, when was the last time you had a fight?
00:01:14.000 Was it 2011?
00:01:15.000 Is that what it was?
00:01:16.000 Yeah, 2011. So it's been like eight years, which is...
00:01:20.000 You were thinking of competing deep into your 50s, though.
00:01:24.000 Well, yeah, the thing is that I'm always trying to stay in shape, but I really didn't want to get hit again.
00:01:32.000 Right, right, right.
00:01:33.000 Like that, but exhibition, I could do an exhibition.
00:01:37.000 Who is the exhibition against?
00:01:39.000 I don't know yet.
00:01:41.000 I'm thinking about, you know, I wanted to be Reddick Bow, because me and him are buddies.
00:01:46.000 Now, you could do it with somebody you're friends with, because they know that...
00:01:51.000 They're not going to hit you too hard if you don't hit them too hard.
00:01:54.000 Right.
00:01:55.000 So it'll be more of a sparring sort of deal.
00:01:57.000 Yes.
00:01:58.000 Now, how often are you training now?
00:02:00.000 Well, you know, I'm always training.
00:02:02.000 I shadow box.
00:02:03.000 I don't hit the bag, but I'm ready to do it now because I'm actually going to be performing.
00:02:12.000 I want to look good, but I don't want to get in a doggy-doggy fight.
00:02:18.000 Right.
00:02:19.000 You don't want to get into a war.
00:02:20.000 Right.
00:02:21.000 You just want to have like a little exhibition sparring match.
00:02:23.000 Just a little...
00:02:24.000 Just combinations, not hit each other too hard, that kind of deal?
00:02:27.000 Well, yeah.
00:02:29.000 We can hit hard to the body.
00:02:31.000 Right.
00:02:32.000 And not the head.
00:02:32.000 Right, right, right.
00:02:34.000 Now, at this stage of your life, you know, it's been a while since you competed.
00:02:38.000 Are you worried that those competitive juices might get fired up again?
00:02:42.000 And you might want to actually fight again?
00:02:44.000 No, I don't think I... I don't think I will ever go back in because I did everything I wanted to do.
00:02:51.000 I feel that I got as far as I wanted to get.
00:02:56.000 And, you know, I'm the only four-time heavyweight champion of the world.
00:03:00.000 Ever.
00:03:00.000 So I ain't got no reason to be mad with nobody about anything.
00:03:06.000 I think I had a great career.
00:03:09.000 You had an unbelievable career.
00:03:10.000 Yes.
00:03:11.000 Only four-time heavyweight champion of the world ever.
00:03:14.000 I mean, I can remember way back in the day when you were moving up from cruiserweight to heavyweight.
00:03:18.000 And it was one of the rare times where we were watching...
00:03:22.000 Back in those days, for folks who don't know, it was kind of taboo for boxers to lift weights.
00:03:27.000 Yeah, it was.
00:03:28.000 And it was Mackie Shilstone that got you ready for that, right?
00:03:32.000 No, no.
00:03:32.000 It was Tim Hallmark.
00:03:33.000 Yeah, Tim Hallmark.
00:03:35.000 Mackie Shilstone got Spinks ready.
00:03:36.000 Got Spinks ready, yeah.
00:03:38.000 And I came after that, and the point of coming out to Mackie Shilstone, everybody thought about the weight, but...
00:03:47.000 Tim Hallmark would talk about flexibility, all the things you have to do when you lift weights.
00:03:53.000 Right, yeah.
00:03:54.000 Because everybody used to think before that that if you lifted weights, it made you stiff.
00:03:58.000 Yeah.
00:03:59.000 And Tim was able to, he did everything with me to show me that That's just a myth.
00:04:08.000 Right, right.
00:04:09.000 Condition is about, you know, heart rate and all this.
00:04:12.000 And then, you know, when you lift weight, you just got to do more.
00:04:16.000 Right.
00:04:16.000 It seemed like back then the problem was when people would lift weights, they would get sore and then they would go to the gym and they wouldn't perform as well.
00:04:24.000 And so everybody would say, oh, weights are making you stiff.
00:04:26.000 They didn't allow themselves to get through a full program with a real strength and conditioning guy like Tim Hallmark or Mackie Shilstone.
00:04:33.000 They were the first guys really to bulk guys up.
00:04:36.000 Well, it's all about confidence and someone taking to another level, you know.
00:04:42.000 And I think that at that time, people just kind of In this level, this is all we know, and this is the only way we can go, because you have to work harder if you lift weight.
00:04:54.000 You're going to have to work harder.
00:04:56.000 With me, I was able to bring a ballet teacher in there.
00:05:00.000 I had ballet, too.
00:05:01.000 Did you really?
00:05:02.000 Yeah.
00:05:02.000 That's the reason why I was able to still be flexible and being able to be quick and all that.
00:05:10.000 I did all that, but I ain't let nobody know I would do ballet.
00:05:16.000 I'd like to see some video of you doing ballet.
00:05:18.000 Is there any out there?
00:05:19.000 No.
00:05:21.000 Did you wear a tutu?
00:05:22.000 No, no, no, no.
00:05:23.000 I got stressed a lot.
00:05:27.000 Miss Kennett, that's her name.
00:05:30.000 I kept her to the day that she ended up slipping, breaking her hip.
00:05:36.000 Because she was like 70 years old when she was stretching me and had me doing all the splits and all this.
00:05:44.000 But it worked.
00:05:46.000 Yeah.
00:05:46.000 Well, you were one of the first, like, supremely conditioned heavyweight boxers.
00:05:51.000 You know, when you'd see, you were sculpted, you know, and you would be able to put that output out for the entire 12 rounds.
00:05:59.000 I mean, you had those incredible fights at Riddick Poe.
00:06:02.000 I know you guys are friends now, but god damn, did you guys have some wars.
00:06:06.000 We had battles.
00:06:08.000 And I think the big thing, because...
00:06:11.000 He's kind of a bully.
00:06:14.000 He's a big guy, and he used to always look at me and say, a good big guy beat a good little guy any time.
00:06:24.000 And every time we'd go in and practice, I'd bust him up.
00:06:28.000 I was four years older than him, but he was bigger, but I was always good at him.
00:06:35.000 Yeah.
00:06:35.000 Well, you guys had some crazy fights, but the craziest one was probably the one where the guy landed in the middle of the ring, the guy with the parachute.
00:06:44.000 What was that guy's, what did he call himself?
00:06:46.000 The fan man.
00:06:47.000 That's right.
00:06:48.000 He had a fan that was powering his parachute, and he literally landed in the ring.
00:06:53.000 That was in an outdoor arena in Vegas, is that what it was?
00:06:56.000 Well, it sure was.
00:06:59.000 Held the fight up for about 30 minutes.
00:07:01.000 That was crazy.
00:07:02.000 Yeah, because at that time, I had him hurt.
00:07:06.000 Yes.
00:07:06.000 And it saved him.
00:07:08.000 Yeah, well, you had him hurt, and then everybody got cold.
00:07:11.000 I mean, you cooled off.
00:07:12.000 I mean, it almost seems like they should have canceled the fight.
00:07:16.000 Well, you know, it was half of the fight.
00:07:19.000 If they cast the fight, then we're at the pairs again.
00:07:22.000 There's a picture up there.
00:07:24.000 Look at that.
00:07:24.000 What was going through your mind when you saw that guy land on the ropes like that?
00:07:29.000 Well, it shocked me then, because when he did, the light started like this, and Curtis Mayfield had just got paralyzed.
00:07:41.000 Same thing.
00:07:43.000 The thing fell down.
00:07:44.000 Oh, lights fell on him.
00:07:45.000 Yeah, yeah.
00:07:46.000 Curtis Mayfield, he got paralyzed that way?
00:07:47.000 Yes.
00:07:48.000 Oh, wow.
00:07:49.000 So you thought maybe the lights were about to fall.
00:07:52.000 Well, yeah, and I was trying to make sure that I could make that quick step, get in or get out.
00:07:57.000 Right, right, right.
00:07:57.000 Yeah.
00:07:58.000 Yeah.
00:07:59.000 So this guy, once you finally realized that it was a guy on a parachute with a fan behind him, how mad were you?
00:08:08.000 Well, you know, I can keep my mind on him.
00:08:10.000 I got to keep my mind on Reddit.
00:08:12.000 Bo, that's enough.
00:08:14.000 Yeah.
00:08:15.000 Everybody asks me that, and I'm like, my mind, you know, you have to have a one-track mind, and you're going to be real good.
00:08:22.000 You're going to be the best.
00:08:23.000 You have to have that one-track mind.
00:08:24.000 Yeah.
00:08:25.000 Yeah, it's not something you can pay attention to, but was it hard to get your mind back into it after the settle, and they had to clear the guy out and arrest him and clean the ring out and everything?
00:08:35.000 No, I stayed focused, and my whole thing is that You know, I felt that I won the first half.
00:08:42.000 Right.
00:08:43.000 I got, now I got this next half.
00:08:46.000 Why did it take a half hour to get that guy out of there?
00:08:48.000 You know, you know, you know, really both wife were there.
00:08:51.000 She was pregnant and she had to leave and all this.
00:08:55.000 So many things happened because the guy happened to come over Farrakhan.
00:09:00.000 And, and, and so all these people, they don't beat the poor man in the head.
00:09:04.000 I'll knock them out.
00:09:06.000 He got a really good beam for coming in.
00:09:09.000 I hope he did.
00:09:10.000 Yeah, he did.
00:09:10.000 Is he still in jail?
00:09:12.000 No, no, no.
00:09:12.000 He passed now.
00:09:14.000 Oh, he's gone?
00:09:14.000 Yeah.
00:09:15.000 Oh, well.
00:09:17.000 I guess that's his legacy.
00:09:19.000 He fucked up your fight.
00:09:21.000 That's his legacy.
00:09:22.000 You're right, but...
00:09:24.000 I won!
00:09:25.000 Yes, you did.
00:09:26.000 Yeah.
00:09:27.000 I mean, look, man, you had some incredible fights, but to me, one of my fondest memories is, you know who Kevin James is from the King of Queens, the TV show?
00:09:36.000 Me and Kevin James were at my house in Encino the night you fought Tyson, the first one, the first fight, when you dropped Tyson.
00:09:43.000 I'll never forget it because back then, I mean, we knew that Buster Douglas had beaten Tyson, but we kind of almost thought it was like a fluke.
00:09:50.000 But when you were battering Tyson and then you put him down and stopped him, I'll never forget Kevin James jumping off the couch.
00:09:56.000 Just jumping.
00:09:57.000 Oh my God!
00:09:59.000 We're throwing our arms up in the air.
00:10:00.000 I mean, that was for sure one of the greatest heavyweight championship victories in the history of the sport.
00:10:07.000 It was just an incredible fight because in a lot of people's eyes, Tyson was like this...
00:10:12.000 A bad guy.
00:10:14.000 People thought of him as a thug.
00:10:17.000 And you were thought of as this really good guy.
00:10:20.000 And many people didn't think that you were going to be able to beat him.
00:10:23.000 So when you didn't just beat him, but you took it to him, you took it to him.
00:10:28.000 Early on in the fight, you could tell that you had decided you were going to push him around.
00:10:33.000 And once you had stopped him, that was pandemonium.
00:10:38.000 In my house, everybody was going crazy.
00:10:40.000 They couldn't believe it.
00:10:41.000 Well, you know, I'm like, you know, I'm a Christian.
00:10:49.000 But the point of the matter, I work hard.
00:10:53.000 I train hard.
00:10:55.000 And, you know, my mama said, ain't too many things that you do well.
00:10:58.000 So, son, you know, which one of the sports are you going to do?
00:11:03.000 Because I was a good athlete.
00:11:06.000 I could...
00:11:07.000 But football and boxing was my two best ones.
00:11:11.000 But, you know, I played basketball, I did baseball, I did everything.
00:11:16.000 My mama said, ain't enough time in the day to be the best.
00:11:20.000 At everything.
00:11:20.000 Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
00:11:21.000 She said, so you got to pick one.
00:11:23.000 So when I played football in 10th grade and they put me on the bench, I started crying.
00:11:31.000 My mama said, you can't quit until the season is over.
00:11:37.000 So I had to play on that game.
00:11:40.000 They finally let me play in the championship game.
00:11:42.000 They seen how good I was.
00:11:45.000 And they asked me, was I coming back next year?
00:11:47.000 I said, no sir.
00:11:48.000 He said, why?
00:11:49.000 I said, my mama said I ain't got to.
00:11:51.000 Like this.
00:11:53.000 My mama told me, you got to bet on yourself or you going to bet on the coach.
00:11:57.000 Right.
00:11:57.000 So in boxing, you bet on yourself.
00:12:00.000 Right.
00:12:02.000 In teen sports, you're betting on the coach.
00:12:04.000 You're betting on the coach, you're betting on the other players, and you're betting on the coach letting you play.
00:12:08.000 Right.
00:12:09.000 Right.
00:12:09.000 Whereas in boxing, they have to let you fight.
00:12:11.000 That's right.
00:12:12.000 You may be asking somebody to tag in for you.
00:12:17.000 Now, when did you think that boxing was going to be your career?
00:12:20.000 Was it right after that?
00:12:21.000 Was it like around 10th grade?
00:12:23.000 Oh, well, yeah.
00:12:24.000 Yeah.
00:12:25.000 You know, after 10th grade, I realized that, you know, It came down to one sport that I really do real well.
00:12:34.000 And so that's when I, you know, I just put everything in it.
00:12:40.000 Well, you were part of that incredible Olympic team, too.
00:12:43.000 I mean, so many great fighters came out of that Olympic team, right?
00:12:47.000 Yeah.
00:12:47.000 Mark Breland, Pernell Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor.
00:12:50.000 I can tell you all of them.
00:12:52.000 Paul Gonzalez, 106. Steve McCurry, 112. 19, Robert Shannon.
00:12:58.000 125, Mildred Taylor.
00:13:00.000 132, Peniel Willaker.
00:13:03.000 139, Jerry.
00:13:06.000 And 147, with Mark Breland, 156, Frank Tate.
00:13:12.000 165, Virgil Hill, 78. That's right, Virgil Hill.
00:13:16.000 And then Henry Tillman and Tyrell Biggs.
00:13:22.000 What a team.
00:13:24.000 Yeah.
00:13:24.000 Crazy team.
00:13:26.000 Nine gold medal, one silver, got bronze.
00:13:29.000 Amazing.
00:13:30.000 Yes.
00:13:31.000 And you, besides Michael Spinks, you were one of the rare guys to move up, to move up and be successful as a heavyweight.
00:13:40.000 Did you just decide, like after you'd beat Dwight Muhammad Kawi, who was a cruiserweight champion, and you'd beat, you know, some real good names at that weight class, you had just decided that heavyweight was where the real money was at?
00:13:52.000 Well, actually, you know, my goal, I wanted to be the heavyweight champion of the world.
00:13:58.000 And the only person I knew is Mike Tyson do it, I could do it.
00:14:05.000 So when Mike Tyson whooped everybody, you know, people tend to make up excuses.
00:14:12.000 Now Mike Tyson is a small person.
00:14:16.000 He hit hard, but he got short arms.
00:14:22.000 And so I seen Mike whooping people that 6'4", 6'5", 6'6", and they outweighing about 20 or 30 pounds.
00:14:32.000 He beat the daylights out of him.
00:14:34.000 Right.
00:14:34.000 I figured if Mike could do it, I could do it.
00:14:38.000 So that gave you inspiration.
00:14:39.000 That gave me inspiration.
00:14:41.000 My whole thing is that, you know, I actually, you know, for the cruiserweight division, I kind of went through that.
00:14:49.000 And what's the next goal?
00:14:51.000 It's to go up.
00:14:53.000 And, you know, and I chose to do it.
00:14:56.000 And a lot of people said, man, you crazy.
00:15:01.000 Well, you know, you have to be a little of that to be in this anyway.
00:15:05.000 Yeah, there's no doubt about that, right?
00:15:07.000 Yeah.
00:15:08.000 So when you first did fight Mike Tyson, was that like something you had always knew was going to happen once he got out of jail?
00:15:16.000 Well, it was like this.
00:15:18.000 My mama used to tell me, she said, now...
00:15:20.000 Let me tell you something about good fighters, you can't wish them away.
00:15:24.000 They ain't never going nowhere.
00:15:26.000 You got to face it.
00:15:27.000 And so, you know what?
00:15:29.000 And everybody, in everything that I've done, everybody will always remind me, you didn't beat Mike Tyson.
00:15:37.000 And I'm like, well, you're right.
00:15:39.000 And I said, but it's not like it was my fault.
00:15:41.000 And I said, every time I got ready to fall, something happened.
00:15:45.000 I said, but it wasn't my fault.
00:15:47.000 Well, you ain't really the champ until you beat him.
00:15:51.000 It was amazing that he was so popular, especially in my house.
00:15:57.000 When people get mad at me, they tell me, I can't wait until you fight Mike Tyson.
00:16:02.000 That's crazy.
00:16:03.000 And so the thing is, is that, you know, he was that person that I watched everyone in his fight, and I realized you can't make that many mistakes with Mike.
00:16:15.000 Right.
00:16:15.000 Right.
00:16:16.000 When you finally did beat him, when you did fight him and did beat him, do you think that that raised your celebrity and your notoriety to a different level?
00:16:25.000 Not really.
00:16:27.000 I think that it let people know that You ain't got to be considered a bad person to be good in the ring.
00:16:36.000 Yeah.
00:16:36.000 Because, you know, my whole thing, I could box, but everybody thought that because I didn't curse a lot or I don't get in trouble, that you ain't mean enough to be the mean guy.
00:16:49.000 Right.
00:16:50.000 And most so then, I'm a skillful fighter.
00:16:52.000 I kept my body and I did everything right.
00:16:55.000 You know, in general, I fought a lot of guys with a lot bigger It's an art to the game.
00:17:05.000 It's really an art.
00:17:07.000 It's really an art.
00:17:08.000 It's not just one thing you hit harder.
00:17:11.000 Because you've got to be able to take something to give something.
00:17:14.000 Right.
00:17:14.000 Well, you always could take it.
00:17:15.000 Yeah.
00:17:16.000 That was a big part of your career when you had an iron chin.
00:17:19.000 I mean, Riddick Bowe was a giant man.
00:17:21.000 And he hit you with some bombs.
00:17:23.000 And those wars that you guys had, you were able to take some incredible punches.
00:17:27.000 Well, yeah.
00:17:27.000 With me.
00:17:29.000 I knew that I could take it, but can you take it?
00:17:33.000 And so the whole big thing is, the whole big thing, my whole thing, my whole big thing with Mike is that what Mike had told somebody, say, everybody got a plan until they get hit.
00:17:44.000 And he was right.
00:17:46.000 Because, you know, if you hitting it, if this guy worry about you hitting him, and he ain't worried about getting hit, so he ain't got to worry about it.
00:17:53.000 But I knew if you hit me, I was going to hit you back.
00:17:58.000 And so that was part of the plan was to let him know that early.
00:18:02.000 When you fought him, particularly in the first round, you pressed him.
00:18:06.000 That was a rare moment to see someone really pushing Mike back and getting Mike back on his heels.
00:18:12.000 Well, in order of the game, if you like Mike get you back, that may be it.
00:18:17.000 Right, right, right.
00:18:18.000 So you have to attack him.
00:18:20.000 So the whole big thing with me was, it's things that my mama said.
00:18:25.000 She said, let me tell you when you know how good you are.
00:18:32.000 When somebody press you with what you're doing.
00:18:34.000 She said, Mike Lowe to press other people.
00:18:37.000 Can he handle the press?
00:18:39.000 My mom said, do it back to him.
00:18:41.000 Do it back.
00:18:42.000 If you want to see somebody stop doing something to you, do it to them.
00:18:46.000 All of a sudden, they'll stop.
00:18:47.000 People really don't like what you do to somebody, and somebody do it again, you get ticked.
00:18:54.000 Right.
00:18:55.000 Like that.
00:18:55.000 So the thing was to, we practiced just putting pressure, putting pressure, putting pressure.
00:19:02.000 Make him feel the same way that he make other people feel.
00:19:05.000 So that was the game plan going into that fight.
00:19:07.000 That was the game plan, yeah.
00:19:08.000 Was there anything surprising about that fight?
00:19:12.000 Not to me because I didn't want no surprise because of the surprise you may get knocked out.
00:19:17.000 So the thing is to stay on him and let him think about all those things.
00:19:24.000 Now once you stopped him in the first fight, the second fight is the fight that's probably the most famous fight because he bit a chunk of your ear off and I saw it when you were coming in here.
00:19:32.000 Show everybody that.
00:19:34.000 Did you ever think about getting that fixed?
00:19:36.000 Well, no.
00:19:38.000 That's my identification.
00:19:40.000 If I ain't got my ID, I can show my ear.
00:19:44.000 That is, right?
00:19:45.000 If you want to get into somewhere.
00:19:46.000 Do you know who I am?
00:19:47.000 Look at my hair.
00:19:48.000 Yeah.
00:19:49.000 That's crazy, man.
00:19:50.000 That was one of the craziest moments when Mills Lane looked at you and you were jumping up in the air and looked at Tyson and realized, holy shit, he bit a chunk out of your fucking ear.
00:20:00.000 Right.
00:20:01.000 Like, what?
00:20:01.000 What were you thinking at that time?
00:20:04.000 Biting him back.
00:20:06.000 I'm serious.
00:20:07.000 I was getting ready to bite the daylights out of him.
00:20:10.000 And I was going to bite him in the face.
00:20:12.000 I was going to bite him in the face.
00:20:13.000 I wasn't going to wait for the ear.
00:20:14.000 I was going to get the fat stuff.
00:20:16.000 You know, when you're from the ghetto, they say, if you do something, you got to do it worse than what they did.
00:20:22.000 And so, you know, And I told Mike in a talk show, I said, no.
00:20:27.000 I said, no, I was pretending like I was hurting real bad.
00:20:31.000 I said, but I was going to trip you up and bite you right in your face.
00:20:35.000 Everybody knew what I was going to do.
00:20:37.000 I said, but, you know, this prophet told us before the fight, he told me, he said, look, he's going to do something.
00:20:48.000 In your face area, but you got to stay focused because if you don't stay focused, that's the only way that he's going to get you.
00:20:55.000 So by him biting me on my ear, and I knew I was getting ready to bite him back.
00:21:03.000 But my corner person started telling me, keep a mind on the Lord.
00:21:08.000 And because the prophet told me, he said, only way he can get you to get your mind, he going to do something to you.
00:21:17.000 I thought he going to hit me with an elbow, a hip, but anything like that.
00:21:21.000 But I never, ever thought in my life...
00:21:26.000 He would bite me on the ear.
00:21:27.000 And bite a chunk of your ear on it.
00:21:29.000 And it hurt so bad.
00:21:31.000 And people said, how bad did it hurt?
00:21:33.000 I said, did you see how high I jumped?
00:21:37.000 No, it was crazy.
00:21:38.000 You just leaped up in the air.
00:21:40.000 Yeah, it hurt so bad.
00:21:42.000 And I said, Dan, that guy, my corner guy, Tim Hallmark, kept telling me, keep my mind on the Lord.
00:21:51.000 And I didn't want to hear that.
00:21:53.000 You know, even though he was saying that, and I was, man, I was still, I was just trying to remember that, get him.
00:22:01.000 I wanted to bite him.
00:22:02.000 I really wanted to bite him back.
00:22:07.000 And all of a sudden, it hit my mind that they always catch the second person.
00:22:16.000 Right.
00:22:16.000 I'm telling you, anything in life, and I'm the one that people always did something to them, they will always catch me.
00:22:23.000 And I was the only one to get caught all the time because they always catch me trying to get the get back.
00:22:29.000 So revenge is the Lord.
00:22:31.000 So you don't go get back because you're going to get caught.
00:22:34.000 I was amazed that they didn't stop the fight immediately.
00:22:38.000 Well, they came back and checked, and he asked me, you alright?
00:22:43.000 And I said, yeah, because I at least wanted to hit him.
00:22:46.000 Right.
00:22:47.000 I really wanted to hit him.
00:22:48.000 I was really upset.
00:22:50.000 But he tried to bite you twice, right?
00:22:52.000 Well, yeah, he bit me twice.
00:22:54.000 He bit you twice.
00:22:54.000 He bit me when we went back in, and he thought I was going to be scared, and he seen I caught him with these two shots, and He bit me again.
00:23:03.000 Man, I jumped back and I was just getting ready to kick him in the bowl.
00:23:09.000 And the bell rung.
00:23:11.000 And I went back to the corner.
00:23:13.000 Boy, I was so doggone mad that I was really going to get him.
00:23:17.000 And they stopped the fight.
00:23:18.000 And then I got mad because they stopped the fight.
00:23:21.000 Because you were going to get him.
00:23:23.000 I wanted to get him back.
00:23:25.000 Well, it seemed like he thought that you were going to get him and he was trying to find a way out.
00:23:29.000 Well...
00:23:31.000 That's the only thing that made sense.
00:23:32.000 Well, yeah.
00:23:33.000 But the thing is, the only thing that I guess with me and what I stand on is that I was able to forgive him.
00:23:42.000 And that has been the turnaround in my life to tend to make people always wonder about the ear bite.
00:23:52.000 And I said, but I forgave him.
00:23:53.000 And everybody said, so what's special about that?
00:23:56.000 I said, but everywhere I go around the world, The Muslim, whatever.
00:24:02.000 And people said, wow, this guy can forgive.
00:24:05.000 How can you forgive when you're already beating the guy?
00:24:10.000 I said, but you know, but it's what life has to be if you're going to survive with even your brothers and sisters.
00:24:19.000 Because if you don't forgive nobody, you're going to be a mad person.
00:24:23.000 You're going to find yourself locked up.
00:24:25.000 Right, right.
00:24:26.000 And it's going to haunt you.
00:24:27.000 Whereas if you forgave him, it took a weight off your shoulders?
00:24:30.000 Yeah.
00:24:33.000 Mike and I, we do a lot of things together because the forgiveness part.
00:24:38.000 It's cool to see you two together now.
00:24:40.000 I mean, when I have seen things that you've done together, I'm like, wow, it's crazy.
00:24:44.000 Like, after he bit you, those crazy fights, and to see you together laughing and joking around together, it's pretty interesting.
00:24:51.000 Yeah.
00:24:52.000 Well, I mean, when you tell people, you know, when you don't choose your parents, you don't choose your neighborhood, you ain't choose your skin color, you ain't choose to be tall or short, but, you know, this is your statue.
00:25:04.000 And two people, two people came from the ghetto who boxed and...
00:25:11.000 Boxing was the only thing I did real well, okay, in football.
00:25:14.000 But the thing is that after all that, look how much money we made doing something that we, by doing it properly, we make money.
00:25:24.000 We make money and we can both, you know, raise our family in the way that We want to raise him.
00:25:33.000 How long did it take after the fight before you forgave him?
00:25:38.000 I think about the time I got into the locker room and everybody started complaining.
00:25:47.000 I can't believe he did this, this, this, this.
00:25:49.000 I said, look, did he bite you?
00:25:52.000 They said, no, okay.
00:25:54.000 I said, he bit me, right?
00:25:55.000 And I said, now, I'm going to forgive him.
00:25:57.000 And you know what?
00:25:57.000 Y'all got to forgive him too.
00:25:59.000 They said, what do you mean, forgiven?
00:26:01.000 I said, he ain't bite you.
00:26:02.000 I said, he bit me.
00:26:03.000 I said, look, I'm going to forgive him.
00:26:07.000 So you forgave him in the locker room right after the fight?
00:26:10.000 Yes.
00:26:10.000 Because the thing is, the thing is, I, you know, I was really mad coming down and people throwing water and people man and they upset because they didn't get a chance to see what they really wanted to see.
00:26:22.000 Right.
00:26:23.000 Like this.
00:26:23.000 And so they were mad and they were upset.
00:26:26.000 And I asked, you know, me, I figured, who in control?
00:26:32.000 God.
00:26:32.000 So I said, Lord, what is this thing all about?
00:26:35.000 He said, forgive me.
00:26:37.000 And I said, who in the world want to forgive me?
00:26:39.000 But this is what it is.
00:26:41.000 We're the two very important people.
00:26:44.000 Everybody come to see.
00:26:45.000 And they need to know that forgiveness is a big part of life.
00:26:50.000 And so I was able to do that.
00:26:52.000 So in the point of being able to do that, you know, I realized that it made my life better all over the world.
00:27:01.000 You got a Kleenex?
00:27:03.000 Kleenex?
00:27:03.000 Yeah, sure.
00:27:04.000 That's a very powerful thing, man.
00:27:06.000 It really is.
00:27:07.000 That's a very powerful decision.
00:27:09.000 And, you know, it's a very powerful statement, you know, for you to forgive him after that.
00:27:15.000 I mean, that really, that probably did a lot of good for a lot of people to realize, man, if Evander Holyfield can forgive Mike Tyson after he bit a chunk of his ear off, I mean, that's a strong statement of character right there.
00:27:31.000 Well, you know, the thing is, I didn't, now, A little earlier than that, they may not would have got that.
00:27:38.000 They would have got some miracles.
00:27:39.000 If you bit his face.
00:27:41.000 But it's amazing what time would do for you.
00:27:47.000 At one point in time, something would have happened.
00:27:51.000 But because they gave me a little time to think about it and gave me, and I was like, and you know, with me, when things don't go right, I go back to the prayer and say, Lord, what is this all about?
00:28:06.000 And he said, forgiveness.
00:28:08.000 And, you know, I wouldn't be who I am if it wasn't from forgiveness.
00:28:13.000 Everybody don't fell short somewhere.
00:28:16.000 And I didn't.
00:28:17.000 So, you know, the whole big thing is, and I talked to, a week after that, I talked to my, we were We was at the All-Star basketball game in New York, and I looked up, and everybody was streaming, and I wonder what they were streaming about, telling me to watch out.
00:28:38.000 I'm like, watch out for who?
00:28:41.000 I looked up at Mike and he had this big bear coat and he like this.
00:28:46.000 And so everybody was telling me and warning me that Mike, Mike there.
00:28:53.000 He had a big bear skin coat?
00:28:55.000 Big fur coat?
00:28:56.000 He had a big fur coat and stuff like that and he wouldn't do nothing to shake hands.
00:29:00.000 Wow.
00:29:01.000 A week after.
00:29:02.000 Wow.
00:29:02.000 A week after, you know what I'm saying?
00:29:04.000 So your ear is probably still sore.
00:29:06.000 No, no.
00:29:07.000 The thing is, with my ear, my ear is almost like a testimony.
00:29:12.000 Right.
00:29:13.000 And, you know, it's almost like you win a trophy yourself that a person looks and says, man, he forgave the guy.
00:29:20.000 So I see that more people, when they see me, they look at my ear, then after they see me in the ear, then they smile.
00:29:28.000 Not in anger, they smile and say, well, you know what I mean?
00:29:31.000 He forgave that guy.
00:29:33.000 Wow.
00:29:33.000 So when you saw Mike, did you guys talk?
00:29:36.000 Yeah, yeah.
00:29:37.000 A week after the fight?
00:29:38.000 Yeah.
00:29:39.000 What did he say to you?
00:29:40.000 Matter of fact, his room was next door to mine, and I didn't know.
00:29:46.000 We came out.
00:29:48.000 We come out at the same time.
00:29:50.000 He looked.
00:29:51.000 He looked.
00:29:51.000 He asked me, is it all good?
00:29:53.000 I said, yeah.
00:29:54.000 So we get on the elevator together.
00:29:56.000 Whoa!
00:29:57.000 And we come down with the door open, and everybody was shocked.
00:30:02.000 So they were shocked, wondering why we wasn't fighting.
00:30:05.000 It was just you two in the elevator or other people as well?
00:30:08.000 Just you two in the elevator.
00:30:11.000 Wow.
00:30:11.000 And so at the shocking part, they said, man, we thought they were a big fight.
00:30:17.000 And I told the guys, man, I said, you know how much money I got paid in that fight.
00:30:22.000 How much money can you think we're going to fight for free?
00:30:27.000 Was there ever talk about a third fight?
00:30:30.000 I have people mention it.
00:30:32.000 They mention it.
00:30:34.000 But the thing is that they wanted to give a lot of money and they were asking me to try to...
00:30:43.000 And my other thing is that I kind of feel like it's kind of a bully for you to ask somebody to fight.
00:30:50.000 To fight you again when you know you're going to win again.
00:30:55.000 So the whole big thing is I just didn't think that if Mike wanted to do it, I would have done it.
00:31:04.000 But I wasn't going to go ask.
00:31:06.000 I think you've been a bully when you know you're better than somebody and you want to You want to play them in something that you know you're going to beat them.
00:31:15.000 Right, right, right.
00:31:16.000 It's a challenge.
00:31:17.000 Somebody challenge you to think that I can come back and beat you.
00:31:21.000 But, you know, just, you know, you feel that you better.
00:31:26.000 And so I think it'd be wrong for me to ask it.
00:31:29.000 Right.
00:31:30.000 No, that's amazing.
00:31:32.000 I mean, but that just shows what kind of a person you are.
00:31:35.000 Like, it shows what kind of character you have.
00:31:37.000 And that sort of defines your career, that you are the guy that did always seek the big challenges.
00:31:44.000 Yeah, you know, winning this, you know, the nickname Real Deal, I was like, and people ask me, how you get that name Real Deal?
00:31:55.000 I said, you know, I thank God for anything that's great that comes from God at all given time.
00:32:03.000 You know, I had a mom who had a sixth grade education, but she raised me.
00:32:09.000 She raised the four-time headweight champion of the world.
00:32:12.000 She stayed on me all the time.
00:32:15.000 And my brothers and sisters said, Mama, you're going to make a sister to him.
00:32:18.000 You don't let him go out.
00:32:20.000 You don't let him do nothing.
00:32:21.000 My mama said, he's going to be all right.
00:32:23.000 You just wait and see.
00:32:25.000 And when I think about it, she never did give in to what nobody said about me.
00:32:33.000 And I became who I am.
00:32:35.000 And I'm just so thankful.
00:32:39.000 And the Bible said, all good things come from God.
00:32:42.000 Anything that is good, For you, it came from God.
00:32:45.000 It sounds like you rely on your mom, or you relied on your mom a lot for wisdom.
00:32:51.000 Well, that's all I had.
00:32:52.000 That's all I had, because my brothers and sisters and stuff, all of them, I don't think all of them liked me a lot.
00:32:59.000 They may like me a little bit.
00:33:02.000 But my mama, I know my mama loved me.
00:33:06.000 They liked me a little bit.
00:33:08.000 Yeah, but it's amazing to hear that your mother was right at every stop, at every step.
00:33:14.000 You know, all of her advice all paid out.
00:33:16.000 I mean, she knew there was something special about you.
00:33:19.000 Well, you know, my mama knew something special about everybody, but you had to do the work.
00:33:25.000 And the art of me is that my mama had a heart attack.
00:33:30.000 My mom had a heart attack, and so my mom would add home with me to make sure that I made it.
00:33:37.000 But, you know, with everybody else, my mom worked 10 to 10 with them.
00:33:40.000 Right, right, right.
00:33:41.000 So I was the youngest one, so she had a heart attack when I was about six or seven years old, so I got caught in everything.
00:33:48.000 So I got more whooping than everybody.
00:33:51.000 So out of all that whooping, The good person showed up.
00:33:55.000 Yeah, you got more advice than everybody, too, though.
00:33:57.000 I did.
00:33:58.000 Have you ever thought about doing Mike's show?
00:34:00.000 You know, Mike has a podcast now.
00:34:01.000 I did it.
00:34:02.000 Did you get high with him?
00:34:04.000 No, I don't have to get high to do it.
00:34:07.000 But, you know, I did it last month.
00:34:12.000 Oh, okay.
00:34:12.000 Is it out already?
00:34:14.000 I haven't seen it.
00:34:15.000 I've got to check that episode out.
00:34:16.000 That's incredible.
00:34:17.000 What was it like to sit with him at the ranch and hang out with him?
00:34:20.000 Well, it was okay.
00:34:23.000 The thing is, you know, I won't answer the questions and he kind of eggs me up to me.
00:34:28.000 Look, man, I know you're going to do a little bit more than that.
00:34:31.000 I said, you know, if I did, I forgot it, Mike.
00:34:34.000 I forgot it.
00:34:35.000 You let your past be your past.
00:34:37.000 You know, you got to continue to move forward.
00:34:39.000 He's a different person now.
00:34:41.000 Well, I think he is.
00:34:45.000 Yeah, no, he is.
00:34:46.000 He's a very interesting guy.
00:34:49.000 He's a very smart man.
00:34:51.000 He's a lot smarter than what people give him credit for.
00:34:53.000 A lot.
00:34:54.000 Now, that's what they don't know about him.
00:34:56.000 I know that.
00:34:57.000 Yeah, no, he's very introspective, very smart, and very humble, you know, the way he looks at life now.
00:35:04.000 Like, he doesn't even think about his old days.
00:35:08.000 Like, he doesn't like that guy.
00:35:09.000 He doesn't like who he used to be.
00:35:11.000 It's very interesting when you talk to him.
00:35:13.000 Well, yeah, and your past is your past.
00:35:15.000 That's where you have to leave it alone.
00:35:16.000 Yeah, and he smokes $40,000 worth of weed a month.
00:35:21.000 Well, I guess you have the money.
00:35:23.000 You don't have to worry about it.
00:35:26.000 Well, you're involved in CBD now, right?
00:35:28.000 Yes, I am.
00:35:28.000 This is what Resin Sports is?
00:35:30.000 Yes.
00:35:31.000 How amazing is CBD? It's incredible, right?
00:35:34.000 It's amazing how good it is for your health.
00:35:38.000 Yes.
00:35:38.000 And so many people have, you know, your kids.
00:35:42.000 Your kids don't even ask to have the problem, and some of them come up with these problems.
00:35:47.000 If you then have this problem, The CBD, then your kids probably wouldn't function as properly as they function.
00:36:01.000 It's amazing.
00:36:03.000 This stuff got so much benefit, even though if you take advantage of anything, too much anything is not good for you.
00:36:12.000 Right, but I mean, I don't think there's any way you can overdose on CBD, right?
00:36:15.000 It's all just healthy for you.
00:36:17.000 It's just oils.
00:36:18.000 Well, I know it's oils and different things.
00:36:21.000 How much of it do you take a day?
00:36:23.000 For me?
00:36:23.000 Yeah.
00:36:25.000 I rub it on my leg and stuff like that, and I just now found that...
00:36:30.000 They got some oral drops that are really good for you.
00:36:33.000 Now, I didn't know that.
00:36:35.000 Oh, the oral drops?
00:36:36.000 Yeah.
00:36:36.000 Yeah, so that you put on your tongue and all that.
00:36:38.000 Yeah, I love those, yeah.
00:36:39.000 See, I didn't know that.
00:36:41.000 Now, now that I know that, I'm going to start taking me some drops.
00:36:45.000 Yeah, I do both.
00:36:46.000 I take the drops and I rub it on my muscles as well.
00:36:48.000 And they say it's good for your memory and all this and stuff.
00:36:51.000 Now, I didn't know that.
00:36:53.000 Now, I'm going to probably remember a lot of stuff for that.
00:36:58.000 Well, you got through a crazy boxing career remarkably well.
00:37:04.000 I mean, your health is there.
00:37:06.000 You look great.
00:37:07.000 And do you have any injuries or anything that still carries with you after all those years?
00:37:12.000 See, that's the thing.
00:37:13.000 I juiced a lot.
00:37:15.000 I juiced a lot.
00:37:16.000 I mean, man, the best of the juice and all that I did.
00:37:19.000 I ate very clean with stuff like that.
00:37:24.000 Did you have nutritionists that prepared your meals?
00:37:26.000 Yeah.
00:37:27.000 I had some people talk about nutrition, but I kind of ate the way that I want because I knew, but I was very disciplined in what food to eat and what not to eat.
00:37:40.000 When you were eating, did you meal plan or did you just eat whatever you wanted to?
00:37:44.000 What was a typical meal for Evander Holyfield?
00:37:46.000 When Evander Holyfield, when you were in your peak condition and you're training for a fight, what would be a typical meal during camp?
00:37:55.000 Well, you know, I juice.
00:38:00.000 I ain't like nothing green.
00:38:03.000 So I have to juice that.
00:38:04.000 Juice it, right.
00:38:04.000 I juice the green stuff.
00:38:05.000 Spinach, kale, that kind of stuff.
00:38:07.000 I do that.
00:38:08.000 I do that.
00:38:09.000 That's the first thing I put in there.
00:38:10.000 Then I get a chance to eat what I want to eat.
00:38:13.000 So I like steaks.
00:38:15.000 And I like chicken a lot.
00:38:17.000 But the thing is, I like pan apples.
00:38:22.000 I like apples.
00:38:23.000 I like all this fruit stuff that you cut up.
00:38:25.000 The berries and all that.
00:38:27.000 These are the things that actually, Kind of, you know, a couple people saying, do you have any tingling in your hand, your feet, anything?
00:38:35.000 I said, well, I don't have anything.
00:38:37.000 I said, do I suppose to?
00:38:38.000 Well, other people do.
00:38:39.000 I said, but what did they do?
00:38:41.000 What did they eat?
00:38:42.000 Right, right.
00:38:43.000 I really ate real clean, real good.
00:38:46.000 Well, tingling usually is associated with nerve damage, right?
00:38:49.000 A lot of times people have back issues and neck issues from years of fighting.
00:38:53.000 I think even Mike had some neck surgery because of issues that he was having with his neck.
00:38:58.000 But Mike did a lot of bridges, remember, on his neck?
00:39:02.000 He did a lot of bridges, like wrestling-type bridges where he's balancing on his neck and rolling around back and forth.
00:39:07.000 That's not necessarily supposed to be the best thing for your neck either.
00:39:10.000 I did that too.
00:39:12.000 Did you do that?
00:39:13.000 You know, I see somebody doing something and they good.
00:39:17.000 I'm going to try it out.
00:39:18.000 I'm going to try it out.
00:39:20.000 So did you try it out after you saw him do it?
00:39:22.000 No, no, no.
00:39:22.000 I started doing that as a kid in football practice.
00:39:29.000 Oh, okay.
00:39:29.000 We rolled on the neck and all this and stuff like that.
00:39:32.000 You kind of felt that, you know, you're as strong as you can hold your head up and breathe like that.
00:39:38.000 And I did that a lot.
00:39:40.000 How many days did you work?
00:39:42.000 Your typical boxing workout was sparring, hitting the mitts, and then road work.
00:39:49.000 But you would also do strength and conditioning and some serious physical exercise.
00:39:55.000 How did you break up training camp?
00:39:57.000 How many days a week did you spend doing weightlifting type stuff?
00:40:00.000 And how many days were you doing the other things?
00:40:03.000 Well, with the boxing part, I do that five days a week, and the weight lifts three times a week.
00:40:11.000 But I always have three workouts a day.
00:40:15.000 Three?
00:40:15.000 Yeah, three workouts a day.
00:40:21.000 He was especially in conditioning.
00:40:29.000 Each and every training, he's going to do certain things.
00:40:33.000 The most important thing was the boxing.
00:40:35.000 We get the boxing part out first.
00:40:38.000 Then what type of run we're going to do?
00:40:42.000 We ain't just run five miles.
00:40:45.000 We're going to sprint sometime.
00:40:47.000 He'll come up with these different methods that you have three workouts a day, but you're tired.
00:40:55.000 You probably didn't work number 15 minutes, but you're tired.
00:40:59.000 That's a tough 15 minutes.
00:41:02.000 So he had these things that allow me to understand that Whenever I get tired, this is when you know how good to shape you into what you do when you're tired.
00:41:15.000 Right, right.
00:41:16.000 So, you know, it's a thinking program.
00:41:20.000 So then, oh, I tired myself out and your knees hurt and you're anchored and you can't do nothing the next day.
00:41:27.000 You get tired out, the 15 minutes when it's over, you got all this energy.
00:41:33.000 So everything was about recovering.
00:41:35.000 Everything about recovering, right.
00:41:37.000 So he was basically shocking your system with a bunch of different kinds of workouts and then allowing you to recover.
00:41:42.000 And do you think if CBD was around back then, you would have probably used it a lot, huh?
00:41:49.000 I'm not for sure.
00:41:50.000 I'm not for sure because the whole thing with me is understanding what do it do for me.
00:41:57.000 Now, I'm not...
00:42:00.000 I wasn't the type of person that's concerned about you.
00:42:03.000 Now, I got to understand what's going to happen, what it's going to do for me.
00:42:06.000 If it makes you do this, but is it going to make me do this?
00:42:10.000 Just see if it's going to make me do this.
00:42:12.000 It's going to make me feel good.
00:42:13.000 It's going to make me be confident and...
00:42:16.000 Yes, I'm going to have to depend on this the rest of my life if I start it.
00:42:20.000 Right, right, right.
00:42:21.000 So I remember when with the Pan-American game in 1983, so they got the cap practice to pop everybody in their neck and put them in where they can fight good because they want to see everybody win.
00:42:40.000 And I'm the only one wouldn't do it.
00:42:44.000 And they said why?
00:42:46.000 I said because I don't have any money.
00:42:49.000 And they said Well, you don't have to pay any money.
00:42:54.000 I said, yeah, but if this feels good, I'm going to need it every day, and I ain't got no money, so what am I going to do?
00:43:01.000 I said, my mama told me it don't start, nothing you can't pay for.
00:43:05.000 So I'm the only one that didn't go to the CalPract to work or nothing, because I didn't want nothing that I can't afford to do.
00:43:14.000 And so, of course, When after, you know, when I turned pro, coming from pro, I was able to afford it.
00:43:22.000 And I go to Cal Proctor all the time now.
00:43:24.000 But why get something new that you can't pay for?
00:43:28.000 Then you're going to make up an excuse to why you didn't do good today.
00:43:33.000 Because ain't nobody cracked my nigga.
00:43:34.000 Ain't nobody do this.
00:43:36.000 Anything that is done, you got to be able to afford to do it.
00:43:40.000 Was it hard for you to retire?
00:43:43.000 No.
00:43:44.000 I just want to know that I did the very best.
00:43:47.000 What I didn't want to do, I didn't want to retire then come back.
00:43:53.000 Because, you know, you do it.
00:43:58.000 Do it right.
00:43:59.000 My mom would do it right and when you stop, make sure it's over.
00:44:05.000 I think after one of my last fights, my last fight, I met the Kalisco brothers and I asked them why they didn't want to fight.
00:44:17.000 They said, you know, Emanuel Stewart told us that you don't need to fight him.
00:44:24.000 Like this and like that.
00:44:25.000 And they chose not to fight because Emanuel Stewart told them, you know.
00:44:30.000 But I guess the most positive thing about the whole situation, when I was coming back from Russia, I seen a table of Ali.
00:44:41.000 And Ali, when he lost against Larry Hall, he was trying to beat four times.
00:44:48.000 And he said, why ain't I just be happy for three?
00:44:53.000 He said, why did I have to go four?
00:44:55.000 When I seen that, I said, why would I have to be five?
00:45:00.000 I said, I'm on the top.
00:45:03.000 Why not?
00:45:04.000 I'm the best that I've ever been.
00:45:05.000 I broke our lead record.
00:45:07.000 Why don't I just rest and be thankful?
00:45:10.000 And I chose to because the fact of the matter, records are meant to be broken.
00:45:15.000 Somebody's going to break it eventually.
00:45:17.000 Long boxing continues to go because you're looking for it to improve, the game to improve.
00:45:23.000 That's a great attitude that I wish more boxers would have because it's, for fighters, many times the highs of being a champion and winning big championship fights on television under the bright lights, those highs are so high that after they get off and they retire...
00:45:39.000 They just miss it.
00:45:40.000 They miss it so bad.
00:45:41.000 And we've seen everybody, all the greats, from Larry Holmes to Sugar Ray Leonard, all the greats come back.
00:45:47.000 Except Hagler.
00:45:49.000 Hagler never came back.
00:45:51.000 And Andre Ward says he's not going to come back either.
00:45:53.000 But Hagler, to me, was one of the most impressive because he just, after that Sugar Ray Leonard fight, he went, we're good.
00:45:59.000 I'm done.
00:46:01.000 That's it.
00:46:01.000 I'm here.
00:46:03.000 It was amazing because the fact is, you know, You're accustomed to people.
00:46:11.000 Yeah.
00:46:11.000 You know, you don't have to talk when you're a good fighter, you know what?
00:46:14.000 Right.
00:46:14.000 Because everybody asks me, say, why you ain't never said nothing?
00:46:18.000 I was like, I ain't have to say nothing.
00:46:20.000 When people look at it, they start talking about how good I am.
00:46:25.000 So I don't have to say nothing.
00:46:27.000 Well, that was a big part of you, was your humility, but confidence.
00:46:32.000 You were always a humble man, but always a very confident man.
00:46:35.000 And as a fighter, that's a very admirable quality.
00:46:38.000 Like, you didn't have a lot of haters or detractors.
00:46:41.000 When you were the champ, people just appreciated who you were as a man.
00:46:45.000 Yeah, I get it.
00:46:46.000 And all that goes to credit my mom.
00:46:50.000 My mom used to tell me when she said, Yeah, you were never a guy that bragged.
00:47:04.000 You know, when you see these guys like Floyd Mayweather, he gets so much attention.
00:47:08.000 Obviously, he's an incredible boxer, maybe one of the best boxers, if not the best of all time.
00:47:12.000 But just always talks crazy amounts of shit.
00:47:16.000 But that has also got him a crazy amount of money and a crazy amount of attention.
00:47:21.000 But you never went that route.
00:47:22.000 Well, you know, because the fact is it wasn't about money.
00:47:26.000 I'm telling you, the love that you have and that you can account to, say, anytime somebody asks me something, it's not just me.
00:47:38.000 Yeah, my mama, I can always account to these people, this boys club.
00:47:46.000 I tell people, I say, now, I started going to the boys club at the age of six years old.
00:47:51.000 I said, now, I said, I didn't choose my neighborhood that I chose to live in.
00:47:57.000 I said, but, I said, but everybody in that neighborhood told her, you ain't going to be nothing.
00:48:02.000 I'm talking, I'm talking, ask kids, you growing up, and you be telling, you ain't going to be nothing.
00:48:06.000 You ain't going to be nothing.
00:48:08.000 And so, going to that boy's club, the boy's club started talking about goals.
00:48:13.000 What do you want to be?
00:48:15.000 I'm talking, you know, now, off that kid, I can't lie and say, They always ask me, what do you want to be?
00:48:24.000 I say, yeah, all I just know, I want to be great.
00:48:27.000 They say, and what?
00:48:29.000 I say, well, if you don't do nothing, you got to find out what you want to be great in.
00:48:33.000 So, you let you play basketball, let you play baseball, all these different things every day.
00:48:39.000 You know, you're an age group, 6, 7, 8 years old, where you go do all these different things, workshop, you know.
00:48:45.000 They wouldn't let you do what you want to do.
00:48:47.000 You had to...
00:48:49.000 You're a group of people, you have to, at different hours, different time you go to these different things, make sure that you learn to see all the different things that you can be.
00:49:01.000 But if you never was in class and have rules to tell you to do what you want to do, you may not ever become nothing.
00:49:09.000 I became who I am because I went to that boys club and they wanted me to learn all these different things.
00:49:15.000 You find that you ain't going to be great and everything, but at least you know when to be quiet, when to talk, when not to, because you're not going to be the greatest one in all the things that you do.
00:49:26.000 Do you have any regrets when you look back on your championship career?
00:49:31.000 Not at all.
00:49:33.000 Nothing?
00:49:33.000 Not at all.
00:49:34.000 My whole thing is that, you know, I'm...
00:49:37.000 I'm a lot better than what I even dreamed of or whatever, thought about, and like this.
00:49:43.000 But all these things that I wanted to be, you know what, the ultimate thing I wanted to do?
00:49:50.000 Make my mama proud.
00:49:51.000 I wanted my mama to be proud of me because my mama cries so much about what you should have did, what you know, and you know, And I just wanted to be one of the ones that I did what my mama said and she was proud of me and all that.
00:50:10.000 And eventually it became that way.
00:50:14.000 Well, how could she not be proud of you?
00:50:16.000 Four-time heavyweight champion.
00:50:18.000 I mean, you're Evander Holyfield.
00:50:20.000 But you know, when I came back from the Olympics, I kind of had that ego a little bit because I have done something that nobody else done in my family.
00:50:32.000 So I bought my mama a house.
00:50:35.000 But she didn't want the house that I wanted to give her.
00:50:38.000 I want to put her in a nice neighborhood.
00:50:40.000 She didn't want to be in a nice neighborhood.
00:50:42.000 She said, I want to be by the bus stop.
00:50:46.000 She said, I don't want to be depending on when you're going to come pick me up or not.
00:50:51.000 I said, Mama, they don't have bus stops.
00:50:55.000 They don't want everybody seeing what they got called people steal.
00:51:00.000 My mama said, but I don't want to depend on you because I don't know when you're going to come over here.
00:51:05.000 I need to be on the bus now.
00:51:08.000 So I was kind of upset because I want to buy my mama this nice house for me to talk about.
00:51:15.000 My mama want to get a house that ain't nobody want to talk about.
00:51:18.000 It's a big old, old house.
00:51:21.000 But my mama didn't care about that.
00:51:23.000 My mama care about if everybody come home, everybody got a room.
00:51:28.000 Now, I want to give her a three-bedroom.
00:51:31.000 She want to get an eight-bedroom for nothing.
00:51:33.000 Now, our house is going to cost $250,000 on one.
00:51:35.000 On one, it costs $50,000.
00:51:38.000 And so, she want to take the $50,000.
00:51:40.000 I'm trying to figure out, I want something I can brag about.
00:51:43.000 I bought my mama.
00:51:44.000 But my mama said, you know, son, she's her son.
00:51:47.000 I love more than you.
00:51:48.000 I love them too.
00:51:50.000 These my kids just like I don't love you no more.
00:51:52.000 I love them.
00:51:53.000 Right.
00:51:53.000 And so when my mama told me that I came to understand that she was thinking about if everybody came home, everybody have a room.
00:52:00.000 Right.
00:52:01.000 But you come in that three bedroom and there ain't gonna be enough room for everybody.
00:52:06.000 What was the size of the house that you built?
00:52:08.000 You built some crazy, gigantic- Yeah, 54,000 square feet.
00:52:11.000 What?
00:52:12.000 Yeah.
00:52:13.000 54,000 square feet?
00:52:16.000 Yes.
00:52:16.000 Why did you build a house that big?
00:52:18.000 Well, the thing is, I thought about all the things that I didn't have.
00:52:23.000 And I thought about what I could afford, and I was thinking about generations.
00:52:30.000 I didn't build a house just for the family.
00:52:33.000 Now, for the grandkids.
00:52:35.000 And I figured, you know, I love my kids, and they're going to have some kids, and then they're going to have some kids.
00:52:42.000 So, you know, you have a place still for everybody.
00:52:46.000 Oh, so it's practical.
00:52:47.000 Well, to me in West Coast, you only do what you can afford to do.
00:52:52.000 Right.
00:52:52.000 And you could afford to make a 54,000 square foot house.
00:52:58.000 Jesus, how many acres was that thing on?
00:53:00.000 Well, we had 175 acres.
00:53:06.000 When that was done, that must have been crazy.
00:53:09.000 It cost a lot more than it probably would have if I would have thought about it, if I knew what I know today.
00:53:18.000 What was different?
00:53:20.000 The difference is I just got people to do it and didn't have no organization to get professional people who know how to do it.
00:53:31.000 The house cost me a lot more than Then it should have.
00:53:36.000 It was a famous house because it was so big and so expensive.
00:53:39.000 Yeah, well, yeah.
00:53:40.000 Yeah.
00:53:41.000 But, you know, it costs you.
00:53:43.000 Then somebody gets it a little cheaper than you.
00:53:46.000 You're kind of mad.
00:53:48.000 Oh, when you sold it, you mean?
00:53:49.000 Yeah.
00:53:50.000 How much did you wind up selling it for?
00:53:52.000 You know, $5 million.
00:53:57.000 And how much did you build it for?
00:53:58.000 $20 million.
00:54:01.000 Wow, that's a big hit.
00:54:03.000 Somebody got a deal.
00:54:06.000 It's part of life.
00:54:07.000 You learn from your mistakes.
00:54:09.000 Who's living in it now?
00:54:11.000 A guy named Rick Ross.
00:54:13.000 Rick Ross, the rapper?
00:54:14.000 Yep.
00:54:15.000 Really?
00:54:15.000 Yep.
00:54:15.000 That's crazy.
00:54:16.000 Yep.
00:54:17.000 Wow.
00:54:18.000 Good for him.
00:54:19.000 Yeah, and they're doing the movie Coming to America there.
00:54:23.000 Are they really?
00:54:24.000 Yeah, so I have to be a part of it, too.
00:54:26.000 You're in that, right?
00:54:27.000 Coming to America 2, right?
00:54:29.000 Yep.
00:54:29.000 When is that starting to film?
00:54:32.000 Coming up in about a week or two.
00:54:34.000 Is that Eddie Murphy as well?
00:54:35.000 Yes.
00:54:36.000 And Arsenio Hall?
00:54:37.000 Yep.
00:54:37.000 Oh, all right, man.
00:54:38.000 That's beautiful.
00:54:40.000 That's going to be crazy to be in your old house.
00:54:42.000 Yeah.
00:54:44.000 That ain't crazy, but I get invited over there a lot and they still call it my house.
00:54:53.000 Well, you designed it, right?
00:54:54.000 Oh, yeah.
00:54:55.000 Yeah, I did.
00:54:56.000 Did you put a gym in it?
00:54:57.000 A gym, I put everything.
00:55:00.000 Pretty much I copied off Scarface.
00:55:04.000 The movie Scarface, you know.
00:55:06.000 That's the only movie that I've seen that, you know, people come up in a tough situation and they become all that they are.
00:55:15.000 And so I thought that in one way or another, I'm not that, but I came up a tough way to.
00:55:24.000 Right.
00:55:24.000 And so the thing is that you want your kids to have more than you have and something better.
00:55:30.000 Well, that's what, I mean, every great champion wants that.
00:55:33.000 They want a house that shows, like, this is where the heavyweight champion of the world lives.
00:55:39.000 And when you've got 175 acres and 54,000 square feet and the way that house looked, like, that looks like a world championship house.
00:55:49.000 Well, I had a ring look like a championship belt, too.
00:55:52.000 Really?
00:55:52.000 Yeah, shaped like a championship belt, yeah.
00:55:56.000 Is there pictures of that online?
00:55:59.000 I want to see that.
00:56:00.000 How long did it take to build that?
00:56:03.000 A year.
00:56:04.000 Just a year?
00:56:05.000 Yeah.
00:56:05.000 Damn!
00:56:06.000 That's fast.
00:56:08.000 For a house that's 54,000 square feet?
00:56:11.000 Well, you know, but they did.
00:56:13.000 Wow.
00:56:14.000 Do you still live in Atlanta now?
00:56:16.000 No, I live in Fort Lauderdale.
00:56:17.000 What are you doing down there?
00:56:19.000 Well, you know, it's good for tax and all that.
00:56:25.000 Oh yeah, for sure.
00:56:26.000 Florida's got great tax rules.
00:56:28.000 There it is right now.
00:56:29.000 You can see the house from the roof.
00:56:31.000 That is a crazy spread.
00:56:34.000 Look at the size of your pool.
00:56:36.000 You get lost in that pool.
00:56:38.000 That's just like a championship belt.
00:56:41.000 That's amazing.
00:56:42.000 Yeah.
00:56:43.000 That is amazing.
00:56:45.000 Now, do you still work in boxing?
00:56:48.000 Do you train fighters or anything like that?
00:56:50.000 Do you work with anybody?
00:56:51.000 No, I'm part of the promotion.
00:56:54.000 I'm part of the promotion.
00:56:56.000 The other thing is that I don't exactly want to coach on one person because I don't want to be that adversary that if I'm in your calling, they're just going to give it to you.
00:57:09.000 People tend to think that.
00:57:12.000 I know how it was when I was getting ready to fight George Foreman and Muhammad Ali came in the ring.
00:57:23.000 And he waved his hand.
00:57:25.000 So he'd come and tell me, he said, I'm for you.
00:57:29.000 You know, tell me in my ear.
00:57:31.000 Then he went and told George Foreman the same thing.
00:57:34.000 Did he really?
00:57:34.000 That's hilarious.
00:57:36.000 He sure did.
00:57:37.000 That's hilarious.
00:57:38.000 Fighting George Foreman must have been a trip, too, because you're fighting someone from a different generation.
00:57:42.000 You know, he was a legend from Ali's generation.
00:57:45.000 Yeah, it was like kind of different to me.
00:57:50.000 And so I didn't really want to fight George.
00:57:52.000 I just wanted to fight Tyson.
00:57:54.000 And so my business manager, Shelly Finkel, told me, he said, Evander, it's my job as your business manager to tell you the thing about money.
00:58:05.000 He said, you know, I said, I want to get the 30. He said, no, I'm going to get you 50 million.
00:58:12.000 I said, how?
00:58:14.000 He said, If you fight George first, they're going to give you 20. He said, but if you fight Tyson first and get 30, they're going to give you 20 to fight him.
00:58:26.000 They don't think you can beat George.
00:58:29.000 I said, well, I said, man, I said, George is old.
00:58:32.000 He said, yeah, but they believe George is going to knock you out.
00:58:35.000 That's the only reason why they're going to give you $20 million.
00:58:38.000 They're not giving you $20 million because they think it's an easy fight.
00:58:41.000 Well, George, even though he was old, could still knock people out.
00:58:44.000 When he knocked Michael Moore out, I mean, that was crazy.
00:58:46.000 Of course.
00:58:47.000 And he knocked him out after he lost against me.
00:58:51.000 He knocked Michael Moore out because I lost against Michael Moore.
00:58:54.000 Yeah.
00:58:54.000 So it shows you that He didn't give up on his dream.
00:59:01.000 Right.
00:59:01.000 His dream was to be the champ again.
00:59:03.000 Yeah.
00:59:03.000 And he eventually got it.
00:59:05.000 The oldest ever.
00:59:06.000 Yeah.
00:59:06.000 Oldest ever guy to regain the championship.
00:59:08.000 Yeah, and it's kind of sad because I think I'm supposed to be the oldest.
00:59:12.000 Because, you know, that big old Russian that was...
00:59:16.000 Yes, Valuev.
00:59:17.000 Valuev.
00:59:18.000 I fought him.
00:59:19.000 Yes.
00:59:19.000 And ESPN, they scored it.
00:59:23.000 They had me 11 and 1. Mm-hmm.
00:59:26.000 And they get a decision to value well.
00:59:29.000 Yeah.
00:59:29.000 No, I saw that fight.
00:59:30.000 That was a bad decision.
00:59:32.000 Yeah, and it was just sad.
00:59:34.000 You should have won.
00:59:35.000 How old were you at that time?
00:59:37.000 I was 46. So you were a year older.
00:59:39.000 Yeah.
00:59:40.000 And so I constantly tell Tyson, I said, you know, I can tell that we had the best era.
00:59:47.000 I said, because you're the youngest heavyweight champion in the world, and I'm supposed to be the oldest one.
00:59:51.000 I said, what kind of era that is?
00:59:54.000 You had both of the people.
00:59:55.000 Yeah, true.
00:59:57.000 At the time, it was amazing.
01:00:01.000 Tyson did this thing at 20 years old.
01:00:03.000 20 years old.
01:00:04.000 Because I had a lot of people, they would talk about it and say, oh, you know what?
01:00:09.000 You know, you were just a great guy.
01:00:11.000 I said, but Tyson was 20. I said, I ain't no telling what I would have been if I would have been somebody at 20. I said, you know, you're talking about a kid.
01:00:21.000 I said, I came headweight champion of the world at 28 years old.
01:00:24.000 And everybody said, well, you act so different.
01:00:29.000 In a 20-year-old, you're going to see some difference.
01:00:32.000 A lot more maturity.
01:00:33.000 Yeah.
01:00:33.000 It's a different person.
01:00:34.000 Yeah, being 20 and winning the heavyweight championship of the world, I don't know who could do that and not go crazy.
01:00:40.000 Well, because the thing is, he was the most photographed person at that time.
01:00:44.000 Yeah.
01:00:45.000 Every time you look up, you see Mike on it.
01:00:47.000 Yeah.
01:00:47.000 You see Mike on it.
01:00:49.000 And did a lot of incredible stuff, too.
01:00:51.000 He certainly did.
01:00:52.000 What do you think about today's era of boxing, particularly the heavyweight division?
01:00:56.000 I mean, it's real exciting right now.
01:00:58.000 I think it's coming back.
01:00:59.000 Yes.
01:00:59.000 I think coming back, you know, Ruiz don't sneak through the picture.
01:01:04.000 And I like that because here's a guy you look at and you may think he can't fight.
01:01:10.000 Right.
01:01:11.000 Fight him.
01:01:12.000 He can fight.
01:01:14.000 Yeah.
01:01:14.000 Ooh, that Andy Ruiz can throw some combinations.
01:01:16.000 Yeah, sure.
01:01:17.000 And I was telling a friend of mine, I said, now, I said, they picked the wrong guy.
01:01:26.000 I said, what you talking about, man?
01:01:27.000 That boy, he don't look like he...
01:01:29.000 I said, he just looked like that he can fight.
01:01:32.000 I said, I spar with him.
01:01:34.000 I said, he the first person I ever sparred that I say, I never want to fight.
01:01:39.000 Really?
01:01:40.000 Yeah.
01:01:40.000 I said, he was that good.
01:01:43.000 Now, at that time, I was 46. So he had to be probably 19. But that was my first time ever.
01:01:55.000 Seeing a guy, I said, I don't want to fight him.
01:02:01.000 I was glad that I retired after 46. He has beautiful combinations.
01:02:05.000 And you look at his body and you say, oh, that's a guy that's overweight.
01:02:08.000 But underneath all that fat, there's an incredible athlete.
01:02:12.000 That's what I'm saying.
01:02:13.000 Yeah.
01:02:15.000 You just can't go by eye on how I look these days.
01:02:19.000 Because Anthony Joshua looks like a Greek god.
01:02:21.000 He sure did.
01:02:22.000 I mean, he looks like he's carved out of stone.
01:02:24.000 He knocked him down.
01:02:25.000 That guy got up and knocked him down three times.
01:02:28.000 Crazy.
01:02:29.000 And then you got Deontay Wilder, who's one of the craziest heavyweight knockout artists ever.
01:02:35.000 I mean, that guy has preposterous power.
01:02:38.000 Well, you know, because people ask me about him.
01:02:41.000 I said, well, you know what?
01:02:43.000 I said, the only thing I can say, he's from Alabama, too.
01:02:45.000 I said, I'm from Alabama.
01:02:47.000 Something in the water?
01:02:48.000 I said, but...
01:02:51.000 It's his confidence.
01:02:53.000 You know, Dion, he go in, he go in, and he fight his fight.
01:03:02.000 And when he can see that shot, he throw it in and everybody says, but he get wild at the end.
01:03:07.000 I said, at least he know the guy hurt though.
01:03:09.000 I said, he don't get wild before the guy get hurt.
01:03:13.000 But he know the guy hurt.
01:03:14.000 I said, so he can take chances throwing looping shots like this because the guy hurt.
01:03:19.000 I said, but at least he's smart enough to know.
01:03:22.000 But I remember the time when he got hurt, he got knocked down, and all that.
01:03:27.000 And one thing that he showed, he had confidence.
01:03:29.000 Because people who don't have confidence, they get hurt, they start trying to run.
01:03:34.000 When he got hurt, he came forth, and that's the reason why he was able to survive that round.
01:03:39.000 Then the next round, he knocked the guy out.
01:03:41.000 Well, Ortiz and him are going to have a rematch.
01:03:43.000 Yeah, that's the guy that he was.
01:03:45.000 Ortiz is no joke.
01:03:47.000 He's a dangerous fighter.
01:03:49.000 That's the reason I couldn't figure out why you were given another chance.
01:03:54.000 Which shows...
01:03:55.000 His confidence.
01:03:55.000 Confidence.
01:03:56.000 He showed confidence because of the fact that...
01:03:58.000 Now, ain't nobody, even after that fight, want to fight Ortiz the other day than nah.
01:04:03.000 True, true.
01:04:05.000 I'm going to wish him to go away.
01:04:06.000 Yeah.
01:04:07.000 Because he's a good fighter and he's one of the most clever fighters out there.
01:04:13.000 Yes.
01:04:13.000 And that's the reason I'm like...
01:04:15.000 Okay, you did it one time.
01:04:17.000 Okay, you know.
01:04:19.000 Why?
01:04:20.000 Let him knock somebody else out and let him upset somebody before he come back.
01:04:25.000 And Ortiz is getting old.
01:04:27.000 I mean, no one even knows how old he really is because he's from Cuba.
01:04:31.000 You know, there's speculation that he's 50 years old.
01:04:33.000 People don't even know.
01:04:34.000 Right, they don't.
01:04:36.000 But he's an amazing fighter.
01:04:37.000 So skilled out of that Cuban amateur program.
01:04:40.000 I mean, his boxing is just top-notch.
01:04:42.000 And he had Deontay in all sorts of trouble.
01:04:45.000 But you're right.
01:04:46.000 Walder showed that he could overcome adversity and that his power, that's one of the more impressive things about him.
01:04:51.000 His power doesn't go away.
01:04:52.000 He keeps that power, like, deep in the 12th round when he knocked out Tyson Fury, or knocked down Tyson Fury.
01:04:58.000 In the 12th round, it looked like it was over.
01:05:00.000 Well, that's what I'm saying.
01:05:02.000 Yeah.
01:05:03.000 This is what you're talking about, confidence.
01:05:06.000 And I told him, I said, look, man, I said, you're the only person I know that tall and lighter than me.
01:05:16.000 That's true, right?
01:05:17.000 I'm like, he fight 213. He was 209 when he fought Tyson Fury.
01:05:23.000 209, the day of the fight.
01:05:25.000 Crazy.
01:05:26.000 I said, man, that's what you're talking about, confidence and all this.
01:05:32.000 Yeah.
01:05:32.000 But he don't worry about it.
01:05:36.000 Right.
01:05:36.000 No, he don't care.
01:05:38.000 See, and that's why I like it for certain people to admit.
01:05:42.000 With me, everybody said, man, they started talking about this stuff.
01:05:45.000 I said, look, I don't care about that.
01:05:47.000 I can fight, man.
01:05:49.000 Yeah.
01:05:49.000 And you know what?
01:05:50.000 When he started talking to people, and people get scared of him because he said, look, man, I can fight.
01:05:55.000 I know what I can do.
01:05:56.000 Yeah.
01:05:58.000 All he got to do is hit you with that big right hand.
01:06:01.000 Or the left hand.
01:06:02.000 Because I seen him when he hit this boy, now I'm doing a left hook.
01:06:08.000 I said, oh man, he got a hook now.
01:06:11.000 Well, that 12th round, it was a right hand and a left hook behind it and snapped Tyson's head back.
01:06:15.000 But I mean, Tyson Fury's incredible too, man.
01:06:18.000 That guy got up after that.
01:06:19.000 99% of the people on planet Earth would still be out cold after those two punches.
01:06:24.000 What I try to get people to see, I say now, The referee isn't supposed to let him get up.
01:06:31.000 Most people, most fighters would get up.
01:06:34.000 But the referee would dive on you, jump on you, won't let you get up.
01:06:39.000 Because for you to lay flat like that for four or five seconds, they ain't supposed to do that.
01:06:44.000 Right.
01:06:45.000 Most referees would have called it off right there.
01:06:46.000 Yeah, yeah.
01:06:47.000 Well, thank God he didn't.
01:06:48.000 Well, you know, I'm not for sure because it messed up the whole thing.
01:06:53.000 He would have been the champ.
01:06:56.000 And so now...
01:06:58.000 Yeah, but aren't you excited that he got up and then Tyson Fury wound up winning the rest of the round?
01:07:02.000 Well, wait.
01:07:02.000 Yeah, he did.
01:07:03.000 He did.
01:07:04.000 But still, when you do the thing right, your job for me saving the fighter...
01:07:13.000 Right.
01:07:13.000 I see what you're saying.
01:07:14.000 So you think the referee should have probably saved?
01:07:16.000 Yeah.
01:07:17.000 The referee is supposed to do what it is.
01:07:19.000 My whole thing is because if it was anybody else, they would have did it.
01:07:23.000 You know what bothers me?
01:07:24.000 What bothers me is the count was more than 10 seconds.
01:07:27.000 Well, that's what I'm saying.
01:07:28.000 That's what bothers me.
01:07:29.000 What bothers me is I think it shouldn't be the referee going, one, two.
01:07:33.000 It should be a number.
01:07:34.000 There should be a time.
01:07:36.000 They do have a timer.
01:07:37.000 They had a timer.
01:07:38.000 This is how you know.
01:07:40.000 They have a guy with a referee thinking he count too.
01:07:44.000 Right.
01:07:44.000 But he's counting.
01:07:45.000 I want a number, like a digital clock that shows you 10 actual seconds.
01:07:50.000 I think they should have something like that.
01:07:52.000 Because to leave it up to the referee, some referee's like, one, two, three.
01:07:55.000 Other referee's like, one...
01:07:58.000 Two!
01:07:59.000 And that's not seconds.
01:08:00.000 That's not seconds.
01:08:01.000 It's too subjective.
01:08:03.000 You know what?
01:08:03.000 Because even after that, the referee brushed the gloves out, looked at him, looked at his eyes.
01:08:08.000 A couple other seconds.
01:08:09.000 When you look at it, he had about 30 seconds.
01:08:13.000 He had 30 seconds.
01:08:15.000 And then they said, oh, he recovered.
01:08:16.000 I said, but they wouldn't have did that to anybody else.
01:08:20.000 I said, but how about...
01:08:21.000 Now, what bothered me was...
01:08:25.000 What bothered me?
01:08:26.000 I said, how do you...
01:08:27.000 I said, if he go in the other country and fight, and the guy doing him like this, they stopping the fight.
01:08:36.000 Right.
01:08:36.000 A lot of referees would have stopped that fight.
01:08:38.000 I said, they stopped the fight.
01:08:40.000 I said, how is it when somebody can come in your country And you give them the ups.
01:08:50.000 Right, right, right.
01:08:51.000 I said, something is wrong with that.
01:08:54.000 I just think it was because it was such a big fight.
01:08:57.000 Like, everybody wanted to see that fight.
01:08:58.000 It was such a huge fight.
01:08:59.000 Well, you know, even though you go in another country, you know if that fight close anywhere, You're not getting it.
01:09:08.000 You're not getting it.
01:09:12.000 I would hit that guy.
01:09:15.000 The guy didn't even throw no punch in some of the rounds.
01:09:19.000 I remember they asked the guy, how could you win a round when you didn't throw a punch in that round?
01:09:25.000 The only person who's ever done that is Willy Pep.
01:09:27.000 Right?
01:09:28.000 Willy Pep won rounds just by being a slick defensive fighter.
01:09:32.000 But he was so impressive that people gave him the round anyway.
01:09:35.000 You know?
01:09:36.000 That fight was...
01:09:38.000 That was a fight that begged for a rematch.
01:09:40.000 Just begged for a rematch.
01:09:42.000 And it bothers me.
01:09:43.000 It's one of the things that bothers me about boxing sometimes is that these fights, they don't come to fruition.
01:09:48.000 And then if...
01:09:49.000 I mean, he almost lost in his...
01:09:51.000 Tyson, with that cut in his last fight...
01:09:54.000 I mean, that was a bad cut.
01:09:56.000 They could have stopped that fight.
01:09:58.000 Yeah, but they stop it when they want to stop it.
01:10:04.000 So you've got to understand who's leading this thing off to a point where you've got to get...
01:10:10.000 In the game, with me in the box game, I just wanted it to be right because I know how important it is For anybody who put their life on line to be a fighter and want to say it was fair.
01:10:30.000 I did it.
01:10:31.000 I did my all.
01:10:32.000 At least I got my opportunity.
01:10:34.000 Yeah.
01:10:35.000 Well, listen, Evander, I really appreciate your time.
01:10:37.000 I really appreciate you coming in here.
01:10:39.000 And like I said, I've been a giant fan your entire career.
01:10:41.000 So it was an honor to meet you and an honor to have you on here, brother.
01:10:45.000 Thank you very much.
01:10:46.000 Thank you.
01:10:47.000 Evander Holyfield, ladies and gentlemen.
01:10:48.000 Thank you, sir.
