00:00:00.760 Welcome to this episode of the John Henry Weston Show. I'm your host John Henry Weston and pleased to bring you today our interview with Gloria, Princess of Thurn and Taxis.
00:00:10.280 Princess Gloria is one of the wealthiest women in Germany. She's also one of the most fascinating women in the world today.
00:00:17.200 Born of German nobility in 1960, at 20 years old she married Johannes, the 11th Prince of Thurn and Taxis, who was quite a bit older.
00:00:26.120 She became a storybook princess of the 80s, living the Jetstead lifestyle with friends including Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol.
00:00:35.040 Her luxurious lifestyle and at times wild fashion led her to be dubbed the Punk Princess and Princess TNT.
00:00:43.400 Warhol's artwork of the crucifixion graces the princess's palatial Rome apartment where we met to tape our show in her private chapel.
00:00:52.060 Princess Gloria is described by Wikipedia as a German socialite, a businesswoman, philanthropist, Catholic activist and artist.
00:01:00.580 But her faith blossomed after her husband's death, which left her with three little children and hundreds of millions in debt.
00:01:08.600 She had to sell off property, jewelry, cars and much more and reorganize the family finances to preserve the family fortune.
00:01:16.260 A devout Catholic and traditional Catholic, who is close to Pope Benedict XVI, to Cardinals Müller and Cardinal Burke,
00:01:25.860 she defies the false characterization of traditional Catholics.
00:01:30.100 She loves the poor and cares for them like few others do.
00:01:33.780 In fact, Gloria's family serves 300 hot meals to the poor every day,
00:01:38.560 a tradition which has carried on for 100 years now at the family's 500-room castle in Germany.
00:01:46.460 At the same time, Gloria is a personal friend of Hillary Clinton, whose birthday Gloria attended,
00:01:53.000 and in March, Clinton attended the funeral of Gloria's sister Maya.
00:01:57.600 Without further ado, here is our interview with Princess Gloria.
00:02:02.720 Welcome to this special edition of the John Henry Weston Show.
00:02:05.640 Coming to you from Rome, where we're very pleased to be with Princess Gloria Turnantaxis.
00:02:12.520 Welcome, Princess Gloria.
00:02:13.640 Thank you very much.
00:02:15.240 You've probably heard of Princess Gloria.
00:02:16.980 She's been in the news lately with regard to the Holy Father.
00:02:20.940 She was covered in December in the New York Times,
00:02:23.520 talking about, rather controversially, about the Holy Father.
00:02:28.300 And more recently as well, when the Holy Father made comments on Verona.
00:02:31.600 And so we're going to give Princess Gloria a chance to speak in her own words,
00:02:36.360 rather than edited by some editor at the New York Times.
00:02:39.700 So, Princess Gloria, things have been in the church for the past five years or so rather strained.
00:02:48.500 There's a lot of division.
00:02:51.960 And, first of all, how do you see that, and what do you see your role in that?
00:02:59.420 Well, I try to ignore the division, because division is always something negative.
00:03:05.920 So, my way forward always is to be somebody that is very welcoming,
00:03:12.560 and also to live and do everything by the example.
00:03:17.140 Like, I want to be a straightforward Catholic, like I have always been,
00:03:22.880 and not get distracted by the modern stuff.
00:03:28.020 You're very into the tradition of the church.
00:03:32.560 You were inspired by Cardinal Ratzinger, then Pope Benedict, a good friend of yours.
00:03:39.880 How has your relationship with Pope Benedict or Cardinal Ratzinger before that helped you in your faith?
00:03:48.240 Well, I have had many acquaintances with very good priests,
00:03:53.220 because I have always made a point out of meeting good fathers that I could relate to and talk to.
00:04:00.340 And Cardinal Ratzinger then came very often to Regensburg,
00:04:04.580 and I had the privilege to invite him to my house.
00:04:07.360 And, of course, I also read his books and his interviews.
00:04:12.380 So, that is, of course, very uplifting, what he was saying.
00:04:15.700 But he was not the only one, because he was in Rome and he was far away.
00:04:21.660 So, for me, it was always very important to also have priests that are very nearby,
00:04:27.220 that one can go to confession regularly.
00:04:30.060 I think that's very important on your way, if you want to deepen the faith
00:04:35.400 and also get the maximum strength, is to actually go to the sacraments.
00:04:41.100 Sacraments are the key to the well-being of the soul.
00:04:45.820 So, your whole approach is to live the faith as best you can,
00:04:51.280 to encourage that, to go forward, and to encourage other people to do the same
00:04:55.680 with the help of the sacraments and good priests.
00:04:58.140 I always think it is very good if the people see that we are a happy religion.
00:05:02.820 And I'm always trying to show that in the way I'm doing things,
00:05:08.780 in the way I give parties, in the way I bring friends together,
00:05:13.720 in the way...
00:05:14.420 Now, we just celebrated 100 years of soup kitchen.
00:05:18.340 The house, Tone on Taxis, has started a soup kitchen for 300 people every day.
00:05:24.200 We give a three-course meal since the end of World War I.
00:05:28.040 And just on this Saturday, we had a 100-year celebration.
00:05:31.780 And, of course, all the poor people who come to our kitchen regularly were invited.
00:05:36.520 And it was a fabulous party because you had on the one side the politicians
00:05:40.460 that are very high-bro, and you had the people from the society
00:05:45.200 all very elegantly dressed.
00:05:47.380 And then, of course, the poor people who are also in their best dresses.
00:05:50.960 And we all partied together in the cloisis of our palace,
00:05:55.640 of our former Benedictine abbey, and had a good time.
00:06:00.320 And that's Catholic.
00:06:01.400 Catholic is to have a good time, to smile, to laugh,
00:06:05.480 and to know that everything has a happy end.
00:06:09.900 And it's an amazing witness to reach out to the poor.
00:06:14.160 Often, people who are more traditional in the church are criticized for ignoring the poor.
00:06:21.040 And yet, here you are continuing your 100-year-long family tradition
00:06:25.240 of assisting the poor in a huge number.
00:06:28.020 Yes, and we also give food to the kindergarten, so it was very nice.
00:06:32.120 The little children came, and they had rehearsed.
00:06:34.540 They were all dressed like little chefs,
00:06:36.520 and they had rehearsed a poem and sang a song for us.
00:06:39.540 But I think the key to survive any bad times,
00:06:45.340 and, of course, on the economical side, we live in very good times,
00:06:50.140 but on the spiritual side, we are living in very bad times.
00:06:53.820 But I think before we had the war, then it was economically bad,
00:06:59.360 but spiritually the people were strong, and they were faithful,
00:07:03.040 and the churches were full.
00:07:04.860 Well, now we have the contrary.
00:07:06.420 So what we can do, first of all, we can show the beauty of the liturgy.
00:07:11.280 That's why I always like to encourage a beautiful liturgy,
00:07:16.100 because this is always uplifting for everybody.
00:07:19.400 And then, of course, a way of life, a happy way of life, and that's Catholic.
00:07:25.660 So on this controversy with the Holy Father,
00:07:28.800 what are your impressions of the Holy Father?
00:07:32.660 And what are your, you know, a lot of your friends,
00:07:36.380 as the New York Times kept saying about, you know,
00:07:38.560 you're the organizer or whatever of this anti-Francis movement.
00:07:42.100 But what are your thoughts there?
00:07:43.800 That's totally nonsense.
00:07:45.180 But, you know, the news always want to divide
00:07:48.360 because it makes the story more sexy in their eyes
00:07:52.100 if people are against each other.
00:07:54.320 I think that's absolutely not true.
00:07:58.020 I gather all sorts of people in my house.
00:08:01.060 They can be socialists.
00:08:03.080 They can be communists.
00:08:04.260 They can be Christian Democrats.
00:08:06.940 They can be traditional Christians and go to Latin mass,
00:08:11.560 but they can also be the happy clappy.
00:08:14.840 If the people are nice, they are all welcome in my friends' circles.
00:08:19.120 If we want to analyze the Pope,
00:08:23.440 you always have to see the Pope is a Jesuit.
00:08:26.280 And the Jesuits have their own way of evangelizing.
00:08:33.180 They have their way, and they think their way is successful.
00:08:37.820 And you can agree to this to a certain point.
00:08:40.900 You can also say, hmm, maybe a little bit too worldly.
00:08:44.300 Maybe, maybe a little bit too.
00:08:46.120 So, but I am not a historian,
00:08:48.580 but it's very interesting to see the strategical approach
00:08:54.360 for evangelization of the Jesuits through the last 200 years.
00:09:00.300 Maybe that's a great theme for our thesis.
00:09:04.500 So, in terms of dealing with the crisis that's in the church right now,
00:09:10.200 you've mentioned that there's a crisis,
00:09:11.980 and in terms of dealing with it,
00:09:14.040 I notice that you've got a statue of Our Lady on your desk.
00:09:18.540 Tell me what influence she's played
00:09:20.480 and what influence you think she might have in the crisis of the church.
00:09:24.180 Well, she certainly has a huge influence
00:09:26.420 because we can already see that in Fatima,
00:09:29.520 she has actually solved the problems.
00:09:33.080 The prayers have solved the problems.
00:09:35.400 We see that Russia today is much more Christian than any other Western country.
00:09:42.580 So, if we're looking spiritually, we have to look to the East.
00:09:47.280 And I always say to my American friends,
00:09:49.960 we have to come away from our idea that Russia is bad
00:09:57.000 because Russia today, ideologically, is more on our side
00:10:02.720 than the East Coast intelligentsia or the one world globalists.
00:10:11.120 There is a huge political direction that is actually anti-Catholic
00:10:19.660 and anti-Christianism.
00:10:21.980 And these people have a huge influence in the media world,
00:10:26.680 in Hollywood.
00:10:27.560 And if the Americans understand that Russia, ideologically,
00:10:34.060 is no longer their enemy,
00:10:36.200 but we are fighting a huge battle to safeguard Christianism,
00:10:41.540 then I think a lot of problems can be solved
00:10:44.420 because Russia and all the Eastern countries,
00:10:48.800 Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia,
00:10:54.760 Slovakia, Slovakia, Romania, Croatia.
00:11:01.780 These countries are all pro-Christianism.
00:11:06.280 They are our friends.
00:11:07.700 And I think if we're looking at a long-term battle for Christianity,
00:11:13.140 we have to acknowledge that these are our friends,
00:11:17.800 these countries are our friends,
00:11:19.160 and we are fighting a battle to safeguard Christianism.
00:11:22.620 You're very interesting in that you actually run in the circles
00:11:28.600 with a lot of these same people who hate Christianity.
00:11:33.040 How do you deal with such people?
00:11:35.880 You're friends, for instance, with Hillary Clinton,
00:11:39.240 other people in the world who have a lot of power,
00:11:42.480 who sit in the realms of power,
00:11:43.920 but have done many things which have,
00:11:46.560 while they might not think so,
00:11:48.140 have attacked the Christian faith,
00:11:49.840 the promotion of abortion and the gender ideology and so on,
00:11:53.740 in America has actually led to the restriction of Christian freedom.
00:12:01.080 You know, adoption agencies all over the United States
00:12:03.820 have been shut down.
00:12:05.500 Boston's ran for 100 years.
00:12:07.320 When they insisted on homosexual adoption,
00:12:09.660 allowing it,
00:12:10.780 the Catholic adoption agency said they couldn't do it,
00:12:13.920 and they had to shut down after 100 years.
00:12:15.320 So these are real limitations or restrictions,
00:12:20.620 persecution, you might say, of Christianity in America,
00:12:23.760 the land of the free.
00:12:25.180 But you are actually interacting with the same people
00:12:28.780 who are doing some of that.
00:12:31.860 How does that work?
00:12:33.380 Well, as I said before,
00:12:34.960 I think it's always very, very important
00:12:37.520 to keep a dialogue and to keep friendship.
00:12:40.160 Also, if people don't agree with you,
00:12:42.800 because I think if you shut the door
00:12:45.300 and you no longer converse,
00:12:47.120 you no longer dialogue,
00:12:48.340 then you will never be able to influence.
00:12:52.240 And I think that most of the people
00:12:54.460 who are for certain things
00:12:56.740 do not really understand the long-term implication.
00:13:00.980 They just have a very short-term view.
00:13:03.080 I think that the hugest or the biggest goal
00:13:12.080 that we have to achieve in society today
00:13:14.700 is that we are no longer attached
00:13:17.440 of these old ideas of Eastern and Western conflict.
00:13:22.540 Because let's remember that all the bad revolutions
00:13:25.880 that happened in the past
00:13:27.240 were always ideology-led.
00:13:29.940 They were either conquering new ground,
00:13:35.840 which hasn't happened anymore,
00:13:38.820 but also underled by huge ideology,
00:13:42.280 thinking of the Russian Revolution,
00:13:43.980 thinking of the French Revolution.
00:13:45.440 So what is the ideology today?
00:13:47.640 Today the ideology is anti-Christian ideology.
00:13:51.900 Now, if we, Canada, USA,
00:13:54.600 we in Europe,
00:13:57.060 if we get together
00:13:58.200 and the Eastern countries
00:14:00.780 and we understand that
00:14:02.000 this is no longer a battle
00:14:03.740 that can be conquered
00:14:04.840 with huge battleships
00:14:07.560 and tanks and airplanes,
00:14:10.100 but this is a war
00:14:11.540 that is an asymmetrical war
00:14:13.940 with terrorism,
00:14:15.440 then we realize
00:14:16.860 we can spend more money
00:14:18.440 in communication
00:14:20.180 and bringing our people together,
00:14:22.600 the people who love God,
00:14:24.160 the people who believe in the Trinity,
00:14:27.000 the people who believe in Our Lady.
00:14:30.560 And that's how we can fight
00:14:32.540 abortion,
00:14:33.900 euthanasia,
00:14:34.980 and all these terrible threats
00:14:37.500 that are coming,
00:14:38.860 rolling towards us
00:14:39.940 in a huge velocity.
00:14:42.140 That's why I think
00:14:44.040 our duty is to convince
00:14:46.620 our friends
00:14:47.900 on the other side
00:14:49.240 of the Atlantic,
00:14:50.800 Russia and the Eastern country
00:14:52.640 are our friends
00:14:53.600 and we need them
00:14:54.600 in the help
00:14:55.400 to fight the battle
00:14:56.880 of asymmetric terrorism
00:14:59.400 and the asymmetric media war
00:15:03.620 that is bringing pornography
00:15:06.120 into the children's home,
00:15:08.000 into the children
00:15:08.780 and who want to destroy
00:15:10.620 our society
00:15:11.620 by killing the oldest
00:15:12.940 because they no longer
00:15:14.100 serve a purpose
00:15:15.060 and also killing the unborn.
00:15:17.680 So that's,
00:15:18.680 if we recognize
00:15:19.580 that we have to fight together
00:15:21.160 with the East,
00:15:22.240 that's when we can
00:15:23.460 really win the battle.
00:15:25.380 Now,
00:15:26.060 you're a very interesting character
00:15:27.580 also in that
00:15:28.620 since you're in those,
00:15:30.920 you're meeting
00:15:32.120 with those very same people,
00:15:34.240 you're able to give a witness
00:15:35.960 of a true Christian.
00:15:38.100 I love the fact
00:15:39.160 that you go to daily Mass
00:15:40.480 in fact,
00:15:41.200 we're sitting right now
00:15:42.520 in what is your chapel
00:15:43.920 and daily Mass
00:15:46.980 is a big part of your life
00:15:48.000 and I think
00:15:48.480 it sort of shows through.
00:15:51.640 The faith has to be lived out
00:15:53.240 and when it's lived out
00:15:53.980 it comes through
00:15:54.700 and affects other people
00:15:55.960 around us.
00:15:57.500 Have you ever seen
00:15:59.120 people look at you
00:16:00.960 because of your faith
00:16:01.920 and be affected by it?
00:16:04.420 Well,
00:16:04.800 of course,
00:16:05.360 people criticize you
00:16:06.620 when you come out
00:16:09.160 and you admit
00:16:09.880 that you have
00:16:10.380 a Catholic faith
00:16:11.340 and you're a happy Catholic
00:16:12.580 then they will say
00:16:13.340 yes,
00:16:13.900 but she is stingy
00:16:15.200 and she's not nice
00:16:16.820 to her kids
00:16:17.540 and she's light
00:16:18.660 and they're trying
00:16:19.660 to bring you down
00:16:20.640 by saying the things
00:16:21.880 about you
00:16:22.780 because everybody
00:16:24.380 has this wrong idea
00:16:26.140 that just because
00:16:27.500 you are a good
00:16:28.240 practicing Catholic
00:16:29.560 you must be a saint.
00:16:31.480 No,
00:16:32.400 none of us
00:16:33.100 is a saint.
00:16:33.820 A saint is a rare,
00:16:35.260 rare,
00:16:35.620 rare,
00:16:35.940 rare,
00:16:36.240 like the triple,
00:16:38.500 triple,
00:16:39.020 quadruple diamond
00:16:40.300 that you find
00:16:41.340 very seldomly.
00:16:43.520 A saint is something
00:16:45.120 we look up to.
00:16:46.280 Of course,
00:16:46.760 we admire
00:16:47.820 and we want
00:16:48.700 to be like that
00:16:49.420 but none of us
00:16:50.620 is a saint
00:16:51.080 because we are
00:16:51.840 all sinners
00:16:53.080 and that's why
00:16:53.920 there is this wonderful
00:16:54.980 saying that
00:16:55.500 the church
00:16:55.980 hates the sin
00:16:57.800 but loves the sinner
00:16:59.760 and that's why
00:17:00.980 it's not true
00:17:01.940 that we always
00:17:03.400 talk down
00:17:05.700 on people
00:17:06.300 who don't live
00:17:07.200 the way we should live
00:17:08.580 because we all
00:17:09.720 don't live
00:17:10.340 the way we should live.
00:17:11.360 We all are sinners
00:17:12.500 but that's the great thing
00:17:13.980 about Catholicism
00:17:15.080 that you actually
00:17:16.220 deal with your sins.
00:17:17.720 When you go to confession
00:17:18.720 you deal
00:17:19.640 and you say
00:17:20.820 I was nasty,
00:17:22.660 I was not patient,
00:17:24.380 I did this
00:17:25.080 and that wrong
00:17:25.740 and if you deal
00:17:26.980 with your shortcomings
00:17:28.160 that's how
00:17:29.300 you can get better.
00:17:31.460 Now,
00:17:32.320 you've in your past
00:17:33.960 lived life
00:17:35.080 on the other side
00:17:36.020 and now
00:17:37.060 as a Catholic
00:17:38.200 what would you say
00:17:40.200 about that
00:17:40.620 because you lived
00:17:41.240 the storybook life
00:17:42.040 that everybody thinks
00:17:42.920 would be the greatest
00:17:43.660 thing in the world
00:17:44.340 when you were
00:17:45.360 into a lifestyle
00:17:47.100 that's very different
00:17:47.820 from what you are now.
00:17:49.800 A lot of young people
00:17:51.260 would look to you
00:17:52.740 and say
00:17:53.840 wow,
00:17:54.460 I wish
00:17:54.800 because they all
00:17:55.440 want to be a princess
00:17:56.020 but you lived
00:17:57.920 that life before.
00:17:58.700 How would you describe
00:17:59.860 your movement
00:18:01.960 of faith
00:18:02.640 from being someone
00:18:03.460 who was Catholic
00:18:04.140 in name
00:18:04.500 to Catholic
00:18:04.980 practicing
00:18:05.540 and what would
00:18:07.100 your advice be
00:18:07.680 for young people?
00:18:08.720 First of all,
00:18:09.400 I was,
00:18:09.840 thank God,
00:18:10.340 always practicing
00:18:11.700 Catholic
00:18:12.140 because I was raised,
00:18:13.320 my parents prayed
00:18:14.460 with me
00:18:15.000 on the bedside,
00:18:16.060 we prayed
00:18:16.520 before the meals,
00:18:18.040 we went to church
00:18:18.860 on Sunday
00:18:19.320 and then of course
00:18:20.140 in my teens
00:18:20.900 I was bored
00:18:21.780 going to church
00:18:22.760 first of all
00:18:23.700 because the church
00:18:24.480 service became
00:18:25.320 really terrible
00:18:26.200 with the,
00:18:27.340 they were trying
00:18:27.960 to copy the hit parade
00:18:29.380 but they were not able,
00:18:31.080 the show people
00:18:31.820 are always better
00:18:32.720 than if they stand
00:18:34.460 there with a guitar
00:18:35.260 trying to be
00:18:36.000 as good
00:18:37.080 as the Rolling Stones,
00:18:38.500 it's not happening.
00:18:39.780 So of course
00:18:40.300 the church life
00:18:41.220 got very unattractive
00:18:42.520 but of course
00:18:43.480 my parents
00:18:44.220 wanted us
00:18:44.980 to attend
00:18:46.120 and we attended
00:18:46.880 and then of course
00:18:47.680 I had a period
00:18:48.640 where I wasn't
00:18:50.120 so much into
00:18:50.920 but when the problems,
00:18:54.120 when the rainy days
00:18:55.280 come,
00:18:56.100 you have a chance
00:18:57.740 to realize
00:18:58.380 and to recompose
00:18:59.580 and I got so much
00:19:00.880 help from above
00:19:01.920 when through
00:19:03.480 my rainy days
00:19:04.580 and I had
00:19:05.220 very bad rainy days
00:19:06.760 so to be grateful
00:19:09.000 I decided
00:19:10.980 to be a more
00:19:12.160 grateful Christian
00:19:14.180 because I am grateful
00:19:15.680 for what I got
00:19:16.680 and I am grateful
00:19:17.700 what did not happen
00:19:19.460 in my life
00:19:20.340 and that's why
00:19:21.500 I became
00:19:22.080 after my husband
00:19:23.500 passed away
00:19:24.260 and I had to deal
00:19:25.840 with so many problems
00:19:27.200 by myself
00:19:28.060 and I was alone
00:19:29.420 with my three children
00:19:30.520 bringing them up
00:19:31.440 I needed the help
00:19:33.480 and when you
00:19:34.140 ask for help
00:19:35.460 you're getting the help
00:19:36.840 that's why
00:19:37.800 I encourage everybody
00:19:39.020 if the sacraments
00:19:40.280 are really the best
00:19:41.920 strength giver
00:19:44.340 for life
00:19:45.120 and they help
00:19:46.120 and it really
00:19:47.160 makes a difference
00:19:47.960 it makes you
00:19:48.680 a happier person
00:19:49.580 it makes you
00:19:50.340 being able to deal
00:19:51.820 with the challenges
00:19:52.900 of life
00:19:53.580 and it helps
00:19:55.460 you in every
00:19:56.720 aspect of life
00:19:58.160 that's why
00:19:58.900 I encourage this
00:20:01.060 beautiful
00:20:02.240 any closing thoughts
00:20:04.280 that you want to give
00:20:05.020 our viewers
00:20:05.480 on LifeSite News
00:20:06.400 I would say
00:20:08.520 watch LifeSite News
00:20:10.220 because LifeSite News
00:20:11.540 is a fabulous
00:20:12.720 news outlet
00:20:13.660 which is not
00:20:15.040 always very pleasing
00:20:16.380 to everybody
00:20:17.220 I will admit that
00:20:18.480 but
00:20:18.840 they are the only ones
00:20:20.840 who really put
00:20:21.780 the finger
00:20:22.500 into the wound
00:20:23.900 and sometimes
00:20:24.700 they even stir
00:20:25.640 in the wound
00:20:26.440 but
00:20:28.260 always in a very
00:20:29.780 fair way
00:20:30.500 and I think
00:20:31.180 we live in times
00:20:33.080 where we
00:20:33.600 know everything
00:20:35.100 it used to be
00:20:36.520 that we didn't
00:20:37.480 know things
00:20:38.060 and that's why
00:20:38.740 we had more
00:20:39.520 space for dreaming
00:20:41.020 unfortunately
00:20:42.020 today
00:20:42.780 we are
00:20:44.740 we live in a life
00:20:45.880 of the internet
00:20:46.580 and transparency
00:20:47.380 and I think
00:20:48.240 if we get
00:20:49.180 so many news
00:20:50.240 we also should get
00:20:51.620 real catholic news
00:20:53.500 and that's what
00:20:54.520 you give us
00:20:55.940 praise God
00:20:56.960 Princess Gloria
00:20:58.060 thank you
00:20:58.560 and God bless you
00:20:59.940 for LifeSite News
