Summary
Pain in childbirth is a consequence of original sin. Since Mary was conceived immaculately, that is, free from original sin, she was exempt from this consequence. And her childbirth was therefore painless. But in The Chosen, Mary is depicted in pain in childbirth. Is this an anti-Biblical thing to say that Mary had pain in giving birth to Jesus? And that s what we re going to be talking about on this episode of The John Henry Weston Show.

Pain in childbirth is a consequence of original sin, as we saw from Genesis 3.16.
00:00:08.120
Since Mary was conceived immaculately, that is, free from original sin,
00:00:12.980
she was exempt from this consequence, and her childbirth was therefore painless.
00:00:27.720
Yes, I know, it's only December 24th, but all over Europe, particularly where my ancestry comes from in Germany, they wear these.
00:00:37.940
It is a traditional German sort of shirt for men, Trachtenhemd it's called,
00:00:44.700
and why they celebrate Christmas actually on Christmas Eve is because they actually try and do it at the time of Christ's birth.
00:00:53.440
Now, typically, if you go through the Fathers of the Church, you notice that they have the Midnight Mass,
00:00:59.100
because it was thought that Christ was born shortly after midnight.
00:01:03.580
Not only that, for where we are here, at least in America, the Holy Land is usually about seven hours ahead.
00:01:12.060
So when we're celebrating on Christmas Eve, it's right about the right time.
00:01:15.860
But I've got a special short show for you today, because I wanted to give you something really neat.
00:01:25.140
You know, the super popular depiction of the life of Jesus by Dallas Jenkins.
00:01:32.860
And what I wonder is, if The Chosen didn't go against the Bible while they were portraying Christmas night,
00:01:40.680
while they were portraying the birth of Jesus, central question in that is,
00:01:45.780
did Mary, the mother of Jesus, have pain in childbirth when giving birth to Jesus?
00:01:51.340
Is it an anti-biblical thing to say that Mary had pain in giving birth to Jesus?
00:01:58.120
And that's what we're going to be talking about on this episode of The John Henry Weston Show.
00:02:04.900
We are on the brink of global war, maybe even nuclear war.
00:02:10.200
This could be the beginning of the long-foretold chastisement in which the living will envy the dead.
00:02:17.100
Our only hope is Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, and people hearing the truth of Jesus Christ.
00:02:30.960
It's bringing you the truth about the news, always.

00:02:45.900
Let's begin, as you always do, with the sign of the cross.
00:02:48.480
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
00:02:55.460
You know, in every super popular depiction of the life of Jesus,
00:03:02.000
they always depict Mary as giving birth to Jesus in travail, in hardship of childbirth.
00:03:10.280
If you go way back to the 1977 Jesus of Nazareth, it was an epic miniseries, very much like The Chosen.
00:03:20.780
And it's considered a masterpiece of Christian cinema.
00:03:24.000
If you go in there, yes, Mary is, you know, giving birth to Jesus and doing the normal, you know, screaming and childbirth thing.
00:03:31.840
If you go to that 2006 very popular movie, The Nativity Story by Catherine Hardwickie,
00:03:39.140
well, there too, Mary is having a lot of pain in childbirth.
00:03:42.880
And of course, in The Chosen, as we said in the opening, Mary, again, is giving birth in lots of pain.
00:03:50.660
But the question is, is this depiction contrary to the scriptures and to the teaching of the Church?
00:03:56.980
Well, I'm going to give you lots of answers to that question.
00:04:01.420
But one of the things it got me thinking of, and it's because I'm reading right now the works of Anne Catherine Emmerich.
00:04:08.640
So, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich wrote, well, a lot.
00:04:13.500
In fact, it wasn't her, it was Clemens Brontano who wrote it.
00:04:16.140
But she saw visions of our Lord's life, his whole life, from his conception to his death and passion and so on.
00:04:33.280
And she's actually there describing the events as they happen.
00:04:39.340
But it's not the first book that I read of such a thing.
00:04:43.060
In fact, one of the first ones I read was a book by Maria Valtorta, an Italian woman who was bedridden.
00:04:56.620
They totally depict what it seemed like at the time of Jesus' life in the Holy Land.
00:05:05.120
What the scenery was, what the flowers were, what the architecture looked like, everything.
00:05:11.480
But she was an unlettered woman from Italy who had no chance of knowing this.
00:05:19.200
And there's probably more, but these are the three that I know of.
00:05:22.040
And the other one is Venerable Mary of Agreda, Maria of Agreda.
00:05:29.000
In Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich's works, in Mary of Agreda's work, The Mystical City of God,
00:05:35.120
and in Maria Valtorta's work, The Poem of the Man-God,
00:05:39.900
you can get what seems like a first-hand depiction of what went on throughout Jesus' life.
00:05:47.900
And very interestingly, all three of them describe the nativity, the birth of our Lord.
00:05:54.640
And it's truly unbelievable when you get into this.
00:05:57.700
I'm going to give you a couple of instances where, first of all, it's just neat stuff.
00:06:03.860
But I want to give you like a little summary, first of all, of the narrative of the birth of Jesus
00:06:10.220
based on these sort of eyewitness accounts, you might say,
00:06:16.500
from Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, from Mary of Agreda, and Maria Valtorta.
00:06:20.720
First of all, they are, as we know, looking for a place to stay.
00:06:29.840
He thought for sure they would find a place in Bethlehem, but nothing doing.
00:06:37.740
And so, as midnight approaches, a profound silence fills the grotto.
00:06:42.400
So, the Blessed Virgin Mary kneels in prayer, enveloped by a radiant supernatural light,
00:06:52.300
And without pain, no pain, or physical effort, Jesus is miraculously born,
00:07:01.560
The light grows so intense that it briefly illuminates the surrounding area.
00:07:06.580
Mary weeps, tears of joy, overwhelmed by the sight of her son,
00:07:12.140
and she gently takes him into her arms and swaddles him and places him in the manger.
00:07:18.000
Her first act is one of profound adoration, recognizing him as her God.
00:07:24.720
Saint Joseph, who had been praying nearby, approaches,
00:07:28.160
and Joseph is overcome with awe, falling to his knees at the sight of the radiant child.
00:07:33.200
He hesitates at first, feeling unworthy to approach,
00:07:37.700
but Mary tenderly calls him forward to behold the Savior.
00:07:41.680
And at that moment of Christ's birth, the heavens burst into praise.
00:07:49.880
And the singing first reaches the ears of the shepherds, keeping watch nearby.
00:07:55.200
The shepherds, who are humble and pure-hearted, respond immediately to the angelic message.
00:08:00.340
They gather some simple gifts, milk and cheese and lambskins,
00:08:09.040
overwhelmed with the sight of the newborn king.
00:08:12.300
As the animals in the cave bow their heads in quiet reverence,
00:08:27.680
All three of them talk about the ox and the donkey
00:08:34.120
and they warm the Christ child with their breath.
00:08:41.400
a sign for the world that the Messiah has been born.
00:08:44.760
So the star radiates a supernatural brilliance,
00:09:08.300
that the mysterious light at the moment of the birth
00:09:28.040
when the light of Christ is brought into the church
00:09:33.560
that in one of the accounts from St. Anne-Catherine-Emerick,
00:09:38.280
was supernaturally balanced despite the cold night.
00:09:43.540
It was kind of a divine protection, if you will,
00:10:15.780
because the Bible gives us indication of this as well.
00:11:13.160
there would have been a partial victory of the devil,
00:11:59.620
the number of masses to be offered for your soul,
00:12:16.420
Right before we get to more verses in the Bible,
00:12:30.620
So, the Catholic Church and most Christian tradition,
00:12:36.480
and that is from the belief of the Catholic Church,
00:12:53.800
This includes the belief that the birth of Jesus
00:12:56.520
was miraculous and did not involve physical trauma
