00:00:43.080 Hi, I'm John Henry Weston, co-founder and editor-in-chief of LifeSite News.
00:01:00.460 For the past six years, LifeSite has been experiencing many difficulties in our reporting on what's
00:01:06.580 going on in Rome.
00:01:07.340 For some 22 years now, we've reported on the Vatican, and especially the statements
00:01:12.280 of the popes, focusing mostly on life and family.
00:01:15.740 With John Paul II and Pope Benedict, it was relatively easy.
00:01:19.560 Since they would say so many pro-life and pro-family things, it was a joy to report.
00:01:24.400 It was a real encouragement, too, for pro-life leaders around the world to hear the words
00:01:29.340 of the popes who it seemed really had your back, even when sometimes your local bishops
00:01:34.040 did not.
00:01:34.540 But things changed with the election of Pope Francis.
00:01:38.720 After a year of trying to explain away his confusing statements, and sometimes statements
00:01:43.140 that went directly against his two predecessors, we knew at LifeSite we had to just report straight
00:01:49.060 what was happening, and let people know what was going on.
00:01:52.900 Faithful Catholics need to understand the severity of the situation so that they can pray like
00:01:58.460 never before for the crisis in the Church, pray and fast, and take action.
00:02:04.540 When we started to do this, however, we noticed that some of our most loyal followers, in
00:02:09.380 fact, some of my own friends and family, started to question what we were doing.
00:02:14.720 As if after so many years of faithful, truthful reporting, we were starting to make things
00:02:19.860 up, or even create things out of thin air.
00:02:23.340 I have to tell you how distressing it was, and still is.
00:02:26.660 I have often wished that, with some of my friends and family, I could sit down with them and
00:02:32.340 show them the evidence first-hand.
00:02:33.840 And that was actually the genesis of the video series that I'm about to launch tomorrow.
00:02:40.320 The evidence for our concerns with Pope Francis speaks for itself.
00:02:44.840 Most of his controversial statements are made in front of cameras, and so we've pulled the
00:02:49.200 footage, and translated it, and pulled the Vatican's own transcripts of them, so we can
00:02:54.200 definitively show what has happened.
00:02:56.180 It is totally understandable that the faithful want to show allegiance to the Pope, and in
00:03:02.740 this day and age of fake news in the mainstream media, mistrusting a news agency, well, that's
00:03:07.520 nothing new either.
00:03:08.800 But we pray that the evidence speaks for itself.
00:03:12.280 Catholics believe that the Pope is infallible, but not with everything he says or does.
00:03:18.240 Only in specific cases where he is explicitly defining doctrine pertaining to the faith and
00:03:24.780 morals.
00:03:25.800 And with regard to confronting the Pope, even publicly, we have the example of that right
00:03:31.460 from the beginning of the Church, the first Pope, St. Peter.
00:03:35.080 Remember the account from Galatians 2 when St. Paul confronted Pope St. Peter over Peter's
00:03:40.900 refusal to eat with uncircumcised Gentile Christians, and he would only eat with Jewish Christians?
00:03:46.460 St. Paul recounts that he opposed Pope St. Peter to the faith, because he was in the
00:03:53.820 wrong, and St. Paul also notes that he did so publicly.
00:03:58.280 The Church's greatest doctor of the faith has also commented on the need to carry on with
00:04:03.720 this tradition of correcting the Pope when needed.
00:04:06.700 St. Thomas Aquinas said, and I quote,
00:04:10.140 If the faith were endangered, a subject ought to rebuke his prelate even publicly.
00:04:15.340 Hence, Paul, who was Peter's subject, rebuked him in public on the account of the imminent
00:04:20.900 danger of scandal concerning the faith.
00:04:24.460 As the gloss of St. Augustine says on Galatians 2.11,
00:04:28.200 Peter gave an example to his superiors that if at any time they should happen to stray from
00:04:33.740 the straight path, they should not disdain to be reproved by their subjects.
00:04:38.540 Another important point to be made is that which was given to me by a good and holy bishop,
00:04:44.680 His Excellency Athanasius Schneider of Astana in Kazakhstan.
00:04:48.700 He teaches that the true friends of the Pope are those cardinals, bishops, and laymen
00:04:53.160 who express their public concern about these very important issues,
00:04:57.100 about the state of confusion in the Church.
00:04:59.280 Bishop Schneider said that those who perform adulation of the Pope and deny the evidence
00:05:04.660 that ambiguity in the Pope's teaching is causing confusion are not helping the Pope nor themselves
00:05:10.100 when they will face their final judgment.
00:05:13.560 Bishop Schneider quoted Melchior Cano, a famous Dominican bishop and theologian of the Council
00:05:18.880 of Trent.
00:05:19.980 He said, and I quote,
00:05:21.280 For us at LifeSite News, we come at this from a perspective we've taken on as a motto,
00:05:48.640 caritas in veritate, love and truth.
00:05:52.560 We recognize that sometimes it's difficult to speak the truth, but out of love and sincere
00:05:59.460 wish for the good of others, we must speak the truth even when it's unpopular.
00:06:04.580 So too with Pope Francis, we love him and pray for him on a daily basis, both individually
00:06:09.420 and as a staff on our morning prayer call.
00:06:12.120 And we can't do as some have suggested and just keep our heads down and wait it out,
00:06:17.860 because souls are at stake.
00:06:20.360 And even more personally, our own children are being confused.
00:06:23.700 The truth of Christ means everything to us.
00:06:27.180 He is the only way to eternal life.
00:06:29.720 And outside of him, there is only eternal hell.
00:06:33.540 And that's why we do what we do at LifeSite News.
00:06:36.700 There is no hatred or animosity here towards the Pope.
00:06:40.200 There is a loving concern and willingness to confront even the Pope when it comes to errors
00:06:46.200 threatening the faith.
00:06:47.740 We try our best to do so with respect and charity, but also with clarity.
00:06:53.820 For LifeSite News, I'm John Henry Weston, and may God bless you.
