00:04:00.040 But the main story about me, I think, that is of interest

00:04:03.740 is how I was raised in a standard secularist East Canadian culture.

00:04:10.960 There was no Catholic schools

00:04:12.020 when I was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

00:04:15.240 I had a conversion experience at the age of 16

00:04:18.600 where all the sacramental graces that my now late father made sure I got.

00:04:23.540 My mom was a convert later to the one holy Catholic and apostolic faith.

00:04:28.160 But that was a true revolutionary event in my life.

00:04:34.360 I was smarter than God, of course.

00:04:36.960 And I was very grateful to have this conversion experience.

00:04:40.760 I knew Jesus Christ had died for my sins.

00:04:42.580 He had a plan for my life.

00:04:43.580 I've counted every hair on my head.

00:04:45.780 And that just was, it all was real.

00:04:48.860 So I went to the local Catholic university

00:04:51.020 to try to find out more about how to explain what happened to others

00:04:54.660 because I wanted to share this newfound enthusiasm.

00:05:03.780 I had four years of pretty, I won't say secularist,

00:05:07.640 more heterodox, the standard bromides of the Catholic left.

00:05:13.700 And so I learned a kind of primacy of conscience Catholic formation,

00:05:19.480 And it wasn't until a long journey and many mistakes and sins on my part

00:05:25.260 that I finally made a real plea to the Holy Spirit

00:05:28.260 to reveal himself in a way that was him

00:05:35.180 And then I, very quickly after I got the gift of faith,

00:05:41.520 it was like people I'd never heard of coming up out of the concrete in front of me,

00:05:49.620 And one of them was an image that my now friend and mentor,

00:05:56.920 And he says, the church is our mother.

00:05:59.320 She wants us to eat all our veggies.

00:06:01.100 She's not the lunch lady at school who doesn't really care what you eat.

00:06:04.180 And that suddenly encapsulated a lot of the confusion that I was experiencing.

00:06:09.300 So I ended up going to Franciscan University of Steubenville,

00:06:11.660 got a master's degree in theology,

00:06:12.980 and did mostly a large amount of unlearning.

00:06:17.300 And that's when I fell in love with dynamic orthodoxy.

00:06:20.160 I learned about the church fathers, St. Thomas Aquinas,

00:06:22.500 the Catholic moral tradition.

00:06:24.180 And so the Holy Spirit acting in my life

00:06:26.880 and just full of the mercy of God,

00:06:29.620 plus the message of Humana Vitae,

00:06:31.800 which became my first book,

00:06:33.160 which is now titled The Contraception Deception.

00:06:37.280 Humana Vitae was like the ugly, embarrassing stink bomb
