00:01:21.260 to commemorate Christ's kingship over the hearts of all Christians and indeed over all men.

00:01:28.220 It was also over every state, nation, and society, or every organization of people.
00:01:33.360 But over the last 60 years or so, this, what people call the social kingship of Christ,

00:02:04.600 let's see what Pope Pius wanted us to learn about Christ the king in the first place.
00:02:09.180 So, Christ is king because he's God,
00:02:13.160 but also because he has bought us with his own blood.
00:02:17.040 And it's in both of these senses that he's our king.
00:02:20.620 He's our king over each person, each family, each gathering of people.
00:02:25.480 He is therefore also king over our nations.
00:02:29.720 Now, we all know that Christ must be king of our hearts,
00:02:33.460 but if we all must recognize him as king as individuals,
00:02:39.120 how could we not still have that duty when we are gathered as a nation,
00:02:43.300 or in fact, as any other type of organization?
00:02:47.700 So, what does this mean in practice?
00:02:50.940 Well, it could mean a lot of things,
00:02:53.060 but at the bare minimum, it means that Christ's kingly dignity demands
00:02:58.800 that the state should take account of the commandments of God
00:03:02.620 and of Christian principles, both in making laws,
00:03:05.300 and administering justice, and also in education.
00:03:09.520 And those are, by the way, that's a quote from the encyclical.
00:03:11.820 The state is sovereign, of course, in its own proper sphere,
00:03:16.460 but it's obliged to operate within the bounds of Christ's own kingship.
00:03:22.720 So, Christ himself told us when he spoke to Pilate that he was a king,
00:03:27.440 and this teaching goes back to the very beginning of the Church.
00:03:32.160 But nothing could be more important for today,
00:03:35.200 for a world rebelling against Christ,
00:03:38.180 than to recognize his royal dignity and power.
00:03:41.440 When Pope Leo XIII was facing similar problems decades before,
00:03:47.100 he wrote in his encyclical Temezi, and I quote,
00:03:51.100 The world has heard enough of the so-called rights of man.
00:03:56.380 Let it hear something of the rights of God, end quote.
00:04:00.740 The silence about the rights of God represented a betrayal of Christ the King.
00:04:06.420 Pius XI created this feast, and I quote,
00:04:10.800 To minister to the need of the present day,
00:04:14.000 and at the same time provide an excellent remedy for the plague,
00:04:19.600 which now infects society.
00:04:22.140 The plague he spoke of was the phenomenon in which men had thrust,
00:04:27.420 and I quote again,
00:04:28.700 thrust Jesus Christ and his holy law out of their lives, end quote. 0.71
00:04:33.000 And worse than this,
00:04:35.480 there was always the temptation for Christians to go along, 0.95
00:04:40.000 to get along,
00:04:40.700 to accommodate themselves to the hostile powers and pluralistic societies.
00:04:45.680 The answer, the Pope decided,
00:04:48.560 was not just an encyclical or pronouncement from the true doctrine.

00:04:55.380 that such pronouncements usually reach only a few,
00:04:59.040 and the more learned among the faithful.

00:05:05.240 Feasts reach them all.
00:05:08.120 Pronouncements speak once,
00:05:09.580 and then they may be forgotten,
00:05:11.020 but feasts speak every year,

00:05:27.960 So, what he says speaks beautifully to the importance of the Mass,
00:05:33.080 and the Church's liturgical life.
00:05:34.640 In fact, he said,
00:05:35.200 The Church's teaching affects the mind primarily.
00:05:39.920 Her feasts affect both mind and heart,
00:05:42.780 and have a salutary effect upon the whole of man's nature.
00:05:47.400 Man is composed of body and soul,
00:05:48.960 and he needs these external festivities,
00:05:52.660 so that the sacred rites,
00:05:54.340 in all of their beauty and variety,
00:05:56.160 may stimulate him to drink more deeply of the fountain of God's teaching,
00:06:00.380 that he may make it a part of himself,
00:06:03.680 and use it with profit for his spiritual life, end quote.
00:06:07.660 So, in some sense,
00:06:09.820 it seemed that Pius XI's plan worked,
00:06:12.560 as the various revolutionary governments seemed to falter,
00:06:15.720 or at least were limited behind the Iron Curtain.
00:06:18.880 But over the last six decades,
00:06:21.040 the doctrine behind this feast has been neglected.
00:06:24.380 It's forgotten.
00:06:25.120 It's distorted.
00:06:26.160 As Pius XI actually predicted what happened,
00:06:29.300 the Church has slowly lost her immunity,
00:06:31.760 and taken a place among kind of false religions,
00:06:35.440 and we have arrived at our current situation.
00:06:38.080 The Church's mission, life, and rights
00:06:41.440 are all subject to the civil state.
00:06:44.340 In fact,
00:06:45.600 they're only tolerated
00:06:46.860 at the whim of our national rulers,
00:06:50.740 or our international rulers today.
00:06:53.160 The liberty of the Church
00:06:54.960 is essential,
00:06:56.980 and the Church's freedom
00:06:58.300 is at the heart of the kingship of Christ.
00:07:01.900 You know, in the same encyclical,
00:07:04.480 in Quas Primas,
00:07:05.420 he teaches us that,
00:07:06.520 and I quote,
00:07:07.480 and this is probably the most important quote,
00:07:09.740 the Church,
00:07:11.240 founded by Christ
00:07:12.280 as a perfect society,
00:07:14.440 has a natural
00:07:15.580 and inalienable right
00:07:17.600 to perfect freedom
00:07:19.440 and immunity
00:07:20.440 from the power of the state.
00:07:22.480 The Church
00:07:22.960 cannot be subject
00:07:24.620 to any external power
00:07:26.940 in the exercise of her mission.
00:07:28.740 But,
00:07:29.560 as these ideas
00:07:30.820 have been neglected
00:07:31.780 and hushed up,
