00:00:00.000 I got rid of some bad books out of the library I thought were spiritually dangerous, including Harry Potter, but a number of others, including one which was, frankly, pornographic.
00:00:07.120 And I told the parents at a meeting about this on the 17th of July, and they basically said, well, it's not as bad as some of the stuff in public school.
00:00:15.700 We're going to see it eventually anyway. And I said, but, you know, they're going to offer them contraceptives. We're not going to do that either.
00:00:20.340 Hey, my friends, I wanted to introduce you to a lovely family, 15 children.
00:00:32.980 But this is a story of a family that's struggling. They're struggling, trying to do what's right.
00:00:41.580 And I think a lot of us find ourselves sometimes in such a situation where you try to do the right thing, but you're in struggle nonetheless.
00:00:48.620 It's a struggle that's mixed with happiness, knowing that you're doing what God wants, but a lot of consternation sometimes.
00:00:55.760 Hardship and a kind of worry, but it's, you know, grace filled so that you're not really, really worrying too bad.
00:01:04.400 But sometimes we're called, the Catholic community is called to help our brothers and sisters.
00:01:10.320 And I know a lot of us do that for different charities and things like that.
00:01:12.880 And that's why we have LifeFunder to point you to good people in need and therefore enable you to find someone that you can give to who's really worthy and that you know you're not giving to something that has a hidden agenda on the other side.
00:01:31.120 So stay tuned for this episode of the Jonathan Weston Show to meet Doug and Adele Darnowski.
00:01:38.080 When I was in seminary, I was reading a book by Henry Nowen.
00:01:46.080 He talked about a nuclear man, you know, and people who grew up in the 1980s were kind of formed by that immediate and constant threat of nuclear annihilation.
00:01:56.080 My generation has grown up, you know, under the specter of priestly sexual abuse.
00:02:04.940 What say you, Mr. Foreperson, is the defendant guilty or not guilty?
00:02:09.260 I think that for many of us that has also been all-encompassing, you know.
00:02:13.960 I mean, I entered the seminary in January of 2004, and it's basically been there for me from the beginning.
00:02:26.080 Doug and Adele Darnowski, welcome to the program.
00:02:41.480 Thank you very much.
00:02:43.300 Let's begin as we always do with the sign of the cross.
00:02:46.280 In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
00:02:50.860 Amen.
00:02:52.640 Thank you both for joining me.
00:02:54.080 I wanted to get to your story because it's so moving.
00:02:57.820 I wanted to start, though, you're a family of 15 children.
00:03:03.160 As a father of eight, that's hugely impressive because I know what goes into even having as small a family as I do.
00:03:11.520 Tell us about your family, if you could start.
00:03:13.580 So, basically, we actually met online.
00:03:16.360 Adele's Canadian.
00:03:17.060 I'm American.
00:03:17.940 And we both want to have a big family.
00:03:20.440 And God blessed us with nine children, including two sets of twins born to us.
00:03:24.720 And along the way, we adopted a little girl from China who's handicapped.
00:03:28.960 And then after we'd had all our biological children that we have, we were blessed to be able to adopt five from Ukraine, all with Down syndrome, in 2020 and 2021.
00:03:38.520 So, we cheated to get to 15.
00:03:42.200 Except it was more work than pregnancy.
00:03:44.080 All the paperwork.
00:03:45.060 Oh, yeah.
00:03:46.040 All the paperwork.
00:03:47.640 Yeah.
00:03:48.080 But they're beautiful little people.
00:03:49.200 They're beautiful.
00:03:49.860 What's your ages?
00:03:50.600 How old's your eldest and youngest of your naturally born children?
00:03:54.700 So, our oldest is 18.
00:03:56.360 And our youngest is three.
00:03:58.180 Yeah, she's from Ukraine.
00:03:59.500 And the youngest naturally born is nine.
00:04:02.360 Wow.
00:04:03.100 Unbelievable.
00:04:04.520 So, that's beautiful.
00:04:06.100 What motivates you?
00:04:07.880 Because that's a lot of work.
00:04:10.320 I think we just love them.
00:04:11.620 We love the little souls.
00:04:12.560 We want to help form them from God.
00:04:14.320 And we have a bunch of really wonderful biological children who have really pitched in.
00:04:18.740 You know, we talk to them about it ahead of time.
00:04:20.720 And, you know, it's a happy family.
00:04:22.540 But, you know, they just love the little guys.
00:04:25.260 They really, really do.
00:04:25.980 And it's just beautiful to see.
00:04:27.840 And after a night, we were lonely.
00:04:29.820 So, yeah.
00:04:30.840 And the kids told us the same thing.
00:04:34.500 Our youngest biological wouldn't let her older brothers learn to tie their shoes because she wanted somebody to help take care of, like, her sisters.
00:04:41.960 Now we've got permanent babies.
00:04:43.640 Yeah.
00:04:44.220 Cute little kids with Down syndrome.
00:04:46.420 So, we've got a life funder running for your family because of hardships you've experienced.
00:04:53.560 Basically, this is an opportunity for people to support your family in what you're going through.
00:04:57.900 So, tell us what happened.
00:04:59.980 You know, you were such a hardworking family and ready to do whatever.
00:05:04.520 And yet, you're in a situation now that's very difficult.
00:05:07.220 What happened?
00:05:08.000 So, the short version is that I got a job in southern Tennessee as the principal of a small Catholic school.
00:05:14.560 We packed up the house, worked like mad to get it all fixed up, put it on the market, sent most 90 plus percent of what we own to storage down there.
00:05:23.760 I went down, started working for free for about three weeks at the school to get ready for the school year ahead of time.
00:05:29.300 And then I was terminated, quote unquote, for no cause on the 19th of July.
00:05:35.200 And basically, I found that there was the school, which I had not been told about at all before I got down there, was in chaos.
00:05:45.120 I heard about one child who went through the six classrooms in the school, pre-K through eighth grade, and had 14 different teachers.
00:05:52.320 So, this is a long-term ongoing problem, and they didn't like the fact they wanted to bring the Baltimore Catechism gradually over a few years.
00:06:01.520 I got rid of some bad books out of the library I felt were spiritually dangerous, including Harry Potter, but a number of others, including one which was, frankly, pornographic.
00:06:08.800 And I told the parents at a meeting about this on the 17th of July, and they basically said, well, it's not as bad as some of the stuff in public school.
00:06:17.440 They're going to see it eventually anyway.
00:06:18.640 And I said, but, you know, they're going to offer them contraceptives.
00:06:21.080 We're not going to do that either.
00:06:22.900 And they also weren't happy that I was the first male principal, that I hired a male teacher.
00:06:26.880 And there were a whole bunch of things you couldn't solve.
00:06:28.640 They accused me of planning to get rid of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, too, which I had already approved the fundraisers that involved them, but I don't know.
00:06:38.260 So, that's a short version.
00:06:40.660 Okay, so this is a little bit bizarre.
00:06:42.720 So, let's get into this.
00:06:43.680 This is a Catholic, a diocesan Catholic school?
00:06:46.780 Yes.
00:06:47.340 And I was hired to help bring it into the Catholic classical model, which is really beautiful because it weaves the faith through all the subjects.
00:06:53.780 That was another thing I was objected to.
00:06:55.060 And they said, you're going to shove religion down the kids' throats 24-7.
00:06:58.620 And I said, no, no, that's not the way it works.
00:07:01.060 And, you know, I did a lot of those things with the express support of the pastor, who was very good.
00:07:05.100 And when I got the termination on the 19th, he said, I haven't slept all night.
00:07:09.820 His voice was cracking.
00:07:10.740 I thought he was going to cry.
00:07:11.500 He's a good man.
00:07:12.940 But there's this group of hardcore families that have been around for a long time, and they were not happy.
00:07:17.460 And the previous principal had been put through a lot from what I found out for a year.
00:07:22.640 And they've actually now advertised, a week after they got rid of me, for somebody to do the exact same thing, make the school Catholic classical, which I had said would take like three years.
00:07:32.920 And I don't know how that's going to possibly succeed.
00:07:35.260 And also that, you know, the diocese were not innocent in this.
00:07:38.880 They said that it was the priests that had the final decision, but they were there with their hand in it, too.
00:07:45.380 So I don't know why they gave in.
00:07:48.200 I was told on the 17th, basically, oh, you'll get your chance.
00:07:51.440 And this was a diocesan education official who came down for the meeting.
00:07:54.700 But the next morning, apparently, they had a meeting with two more diocesan officials.
00:07:58.060 And I think that's when the decision was made that I was to go.
00:08:03.120 So the diocese had a good hand in it, I'm pretty sure, too.
00:08:07.640 Wow.
00:08:09.600 What a situation.
00:08:10.760 So let's get into a little bit more of the specifics around what was removed.
00:08:16.320 I understand there was material that was confusing for children around LGBT issues as well.
00:08:23.800 Is that the case?
00:08:25.040 Yes, there was some curricular material.
00:08:26.540 So basically, I was going through some materials.
00:08:29.340 And I found on a website that they were supposed to subscribe to, you know, coloring sheets for like second graders promoting LGBTQ materials.
00:08:37.840 And I thought, you know, if I can find this in two minutes, it's a big website.
00:08:40.380 But there's other stuff in here.
00:08:41.720 I found something which was one third the price, gave twice as many people access, and which I knew from personal experience to be very wholesome.
00:08:48.320 And so I switched this over to that.
00:08:49.720 And in southern Tennessee, I thought, oh, they'll be happy at least with this.
00:08:52.900 So I told them about it.
00:08:53.980 And they were infuriated about that, too.
00:08:55.800 They said, oh, we can't shelter the kids from this stuff.
00:08:58.120 They're going to see it eventually at the public high school.
00:09:00.860 And I said, again, I said, you know, they're going to offer them at the public high school contraceptives.
00:09:05.080 We're not going to do that either.
00:09:06.020 And that went over like a lead balloon with this group of parents, which shocked me.
00:09:09.680 I had Baptists coming into the school who were excited because we were bringing in the Baltimore Catechism because their church used the Apostles' Creed and that we were getting rid of some of these other books and that we were keeping this stuff out.
00:09:22.340 In fact, one woman a few hours before the meeting enrolled her kids within five minutes of hearing this stuff.
00:09:28.400 And so it's just bizarre.
00:09:30.440 And he had to express permission of the pastor.
00:09:34.160 It wasn't like he just did it on his own.
00:09:35.920 He said, sure.
00:09:36.400 Be quiet about it.
00:09:37.140 And all I did was I told one teacher who had some of the books in the room.
00:09:40.000 And the teacher actually said to me, no, OK, fine.
00:09:42.580 I understand.
00:09:43.440 And said nothing else about the books.
00:09:45.420 And after I said, we're going to have to remove a number of serious books.
00:09:48.840 But what I heard afterwards from the same person was a rather different story.
00:09:52.820 It certainly seems like, you know, the pastor, it seems, wanted a good school and the parents who were there seemed not to want a good school.
00:10:07.140 The diocese seems to be caving, if not worse.
00:10:10.920 Take a look at this.
00:10:14.560 This is Cardinal Burke talking in 2017 about demonic forces entering the church at that time in 2017.
00:10:22.200 Hard to believe that's so long ago.
00:10:23.780 This was given at Rome Life Forum, a conference that LifeSite has been running since 2014, actually.
00:10:30.000 Do you know that we're running another one this year, October 31st of November 1st?
00:10:34.920 That is right at the end of this horrific synod on synodality.
00:10:39.900 October 31st, November 1st, 2023.
00:10:43.360 Come join us in Rome.
00:10:44.680 Go to RomeLifeForum.com for more information.
00:10:49.320 Watch Cardinal Burke give this snippet on demonic forces entering into the Vatican from his talk at Rome Life Forum in 2017.
00:10:58.620 It seems clear from the most respected studies of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima
00:11:04.200 that it has to do with the diabolical forces unleashed upon the world in our time
00:11:10.640 and entering into the very life of the church.
00:11:13.760 For the recovery of peace will be a gift from heaven.
00:11:17.940 But it is not, properly speaking, the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
00:11:23.420 Her victory is of another order, supernatural and then temporal by addition.
00:11:28.720 It will first be the victory of the faith, which will put an end to the time of apostasy
00:11:37.640 and the great shortcomings of the church's pastors.
00:11:40.800 There were also a number of people involved in the school who were very supportive.
00:11:46.500 It was just this one group of people who were allowed to have a disproportionately loud voice, I think.
00:11:51.620 That was a big part of it.
00:11:52.960 Which is so sad for the ones who want the beautiful education.
00:11:57.560 And as you can see in our rural towns, they're just being destroyed by drugs and all kinds of other things.
00:12:05.040 They need the faith.
00:12:06.240 They need this beauty, truth, and goodness that the classical Catholic education has to offer.
00:12:11.660 And the beautiful nuns in Nashville, they've taken over a lot of schools, thanks be to God.
00:12:17.140 And they are trying to spread virtue and the beauty just to save these towns and our cities and the world.
00:12:25.900 Because it's clear that people just don't know the faith.
00:12:28.560 And we were trying to make, willing to make a sacrifice to go down there and really help that.
00:12:32.060 Again, form saints for Christ.
00:12:33.520 And while exactly, it certainly seems in this case, like you have, you know, this situation where it takes sometimes firmness.
00:12:42.760 And I know that's hard for many of us.
00:12:44.600 It's a challenge.
00:12:46.560 It's one thing to believe the faith yourself, but then to be firm in it when it can cost you is very scary indeed.
00:12:56.000 I think a lot of the pastors have, well, prelates even, have actually chosen to go along to get along and refuse to admonish when that's necessary.
00:13:13.240 It's funny because the pastors on the other side in the new church, if you will, they admonish all the time.
00:13:18.580 You know, the leftist, if you will, pastors or dissonant, as they probably are properly called.
00:13:25.660 They are very ready and willing to admonish the faithful as we get, you know, called rigid and all sorts of names from certain prelates.
00:13:39.780 And that's just what happens.
00:13:41.180 They are very vocally against pro-life activism and everything else.
00:13:44.420 Yet, the same, you know, their counterparts on the right, if you will, or being faithful to Christ, they're often not ready to exert, you know, the kind of authority they have to do the right thing.
00:14:00.980 And it's, I've seen it so many times, very sad to see.
00:14:05.380 So, how can, how can we help right now?
00:14:08.180 Well, that we have a, our problem is we, we got stuck.
00:14:15.020 So, we're in a pretty well empty house now because we were about to sell our home and we have it on the market still.
00:14:19.500 If anyone liked to buy it, that would be delightful.
00:14:21.300 It'd make a wonderful Catholic retreat or refuge or just family home.
00:14:25.520 It's a farm of 20 acres.
00:14:26.940 But anyway, putting that plug.
00:14:28.700 But we, we need a job.
00:14:31.220 Is there anybody out there in higher education that can hire this wonderful man?
00:14:34.440 He's fantastic.
00:14:35.160 He can teach any, anything, any grade, except LGBT stuff, any grade and fantastic.
00:14:41.940 It can bring the most complex concept down to an understandable level for even people like me.
00:14:48.620 So, yeah, a job first.
00:14:50.580 And then we're stuck because now all of our belongings have been, are sent to Alabama waiting for us to move down.
00:14:58.800 Hundreds of miles away.
00:14:59.640 Yeah, and here we are.
00:15:00.560 Anyway, we're kind of enjoying a sparse home, but still.
00:15:04.260 And so, yeah, we do that.
00:15:07.340 And, you know, because we made other efforts.
00:15:10.700 We've even found an online for trade and academic school in the last few years called St. Therese and Isra Farm College.
00:15:17.140 It's catholicfarmcollege.com.
00:15:19.560 We tried to do a whole pile of really good things.
00:15:21.940 And if, you know, people can support that.
00:15:24.880 Pray for us.
00:15:25.420 I mean, that's the most important thing because Our Lady can solve all problems.
00:15:28.640 Our Lady can endure of knots.
00:15:29.740 And we've kind of got several big knots right now going on.
00:15:33.600 You know, those are the main things right now.
00:15:36.880 So tell us a little bit, Doug, about your background in education and what you've been doing.
00:15:42.960 Sure.
00:15:43.560 So basically I have my bachelor's with honors from Yale, my PhD with honors from Cornell.
00:15:49.080 I was a biologist.
00:15:50.220 I was a professor for over two decades.
00:15:53.760 Decided because of some of the things I saw just to make more of a shift, though I'm open to any place in academia.
00:15:59.760 I've taught people, including my own kids, all the way from pre-K up through graduate school.
00:16:04.180 I've written for literally dozens of textbooks, biology, emergency medicine.
00:16:08.180 I've done all kinds of things.
00:16:09.420 And part of it is, you know, you've got a big family.
00:16:11.820 You do all kinds of things to take care of them and love them.
00:16:15.360 And so, you know, I've done writing.
00:16:17.640 I've done administrative stuff.
00:16:19.100 I've done teaching.
00:16:20.260 You name it, I'll go for it.
00:16:22.180 I mean, as long as it's moral.
00:16:23.640 But, you know, to take care of this little family.
00:16:25.740 And again, the big thing is try to help save souls.
00:16:30.220 You know, when I was working at a secular university, I used to try to sneak as much good stuff in, solid stuff in, as I could through the back door, if you will.
00:16:38.280 You know, talks about all kinds of issues.
00:16:40.640 Pro-life issues, really, but I couldn't call them that.
00:16:43.020 And people actually listen because they've been so starved for good information.
00:16:48.660 You know, we're in Indiana right now.
00:16:50.480 And this is Alfred Kinsey's home state.
00:16:52.660 And people can look him up and see.
00:16:54.100 I used to sneak in stuff in the end of the last day of my classes about him.
00:16:57.760 And so the people here would realize just what came out of this otherwise really friendly Midwestern American state, the heart of darkness that that guy was.
00:17:05.900 You know, it's amazing you say that because I was teaching many years ago now, about 30 years ago.
00:17:12.020 I was teaching at a college.
00:17:13.060 And my background's all in psychology, actually.
00:17:16.580 So I was teaching a psychology course only for – it was only seven students in the class.
00:17:24.060 And this was adult education, of course.
00:17:28.100 And so the textbook was full of Kinsey.
00:17:31.840 And I happened to be teaching in the very year that they dug up the remains of his assistant, which showed that, of course, they had – you know, they were pedophiles.
00:17:42.200 And they abused children for that table 34, which was just so horrible.
00:17:45.540 And, yeah, I was – I, too, was sort of canceled out of that class.
00:17:50.800 Oh, congratulations.
00:17:52.580 I would literally go into the class on the last day of class and say, blessed mother guardian angel, please block the sound coming out of my door because if my colleagues find out what I'm talking about, I'm at Kinsey's – branch campus at Kinsey's University.
00:18:05.280 Oh, boy.
00:18:06.380 She always took care of me.
00:18:08.280 She always took care of me.
00:18:09.140 Thank you, blessed mother.
00:18:10.180 Yeah.
00:18:10.860 Beautiful.
00:18:11.220 Hello, friends.

00:18:22.080 Now, each round is stamped with the image of the Supreme Court of the United States, featuring the date that the High Court delivered this historic victory.
00:18:29.860 And on the front of our pure silver rounds, LifeSite's logo, surrounded by a brilliant sunburst and draped with olive branches.
00:18:35.420 They, of course, commemorate our 25-year anniversary of LifeSite News.
00:18:39.020 We began in 1997 in September.
00:18:41.960 So, September of 2022 was 25 years.
00:18:44.440 These one-ounce silver rounds are available from our partners at stjosephspartners.com, where you can fulfill all of your silver and gold needs in this perilous time.
00:18:54.000 May God bless you.
00:18:56.500 Wow.
00:18:57.420 Yale and Cornell.
00:18:58.920 Okay.
00:18:59.660 That's no – that's nothing to sneeze at.
00:19:02.400 And you're a full professor before.
00:19:03.740 Now, you're leaving that.
00:19:08.040 A lot of people would think, whoa, you're leaving the cushiest job.
00:19:17.020 You know, wow, that's unreal.
00:19:20.120 But I understand you wanted to pursue higher education, if you could say it that way.
00:19:24.820 Yeah, basically what happened is the place where I was started out as a really – when I was first there, it was really wonderful in that we – the students really just wanted to learn.
00:19:36.500 It was very – what people oftentimes think of stereotypically as American Midwest in terms of, you know, you could – it was open to people of faith and things like that.
00:19:45.580 And it changed radically over the years.
00:19:48.400 And at one point towards the end of my time, I stood up and said some things as a biologist who's, you know, worked in all kinds of different areas, has, you know, good credentials.
00:19:57.580 And I talked about the origins of the COVID virus and the fact that our students, after the state had dropped the mask mandate, ought to have a right to take the things off because it robs them of their humanity.
00:20:07.680 And I said, in the end, the only solution for the chaos in the world is Jesus Christ.
00:20:13.920 Now, I expected some – that wouldn't be a super popular opinion among my peers, but I didn't expect to have been brought up on formal charges, including religious harassment for saying Jesus Christ.
00:20:24.320 That was dropped, but I said – I taught – we prayed a lot before the breast attackment.
00:20:29.040 We talked a lot together, talked to five different priests to get advice.
00:20:32.760 And I had a clear plan for what I wanted to do, and I said, okay, and I resigned.
00:20:36.440 And it was scary as all get out.
00:20:38.840 You know, you're praying the whole time, but I said it felt like I was jumping off the Empire State Building with, you know, my wife and 15 kids on my back.
00:20:45.780 But we did it in faith, and I tried a bunch of other things.
00:20:48.780 I said we founded that online college.
00:20:50.960 And so, you know, I want to keep teaching things because it's – I think I've got a talent for it, and I've got a lot of good things I know I can share with people.
00:21:01.200 And so that – yeah, that's where we are.
00:21:03.000 And I miss the teaching a lot.
00:21:06.580 But, yeah, we'll see where Our Lady leads us.
00:21:10.120 So, Adele, I have to ask you something.
00:21:12.780 Sure.
00:21:13.000 A lot of wives who would see their husband do something like that and then get into a situation like you're in would be very bitter and, you know, sort of take it out on him.
00:21:27.700 What's your attitude in all this, and where are you at?
00:21:29.660 Well, I hope I've been the model wife.
00:21:34.380 But, I mean, it's been very scary.
00:21:36.920 And we go between, Jesus, I trust in you to take care of everything, too.
00:21:40.880 Oh, my gosh, what's happening?
00:21:42.260 You know, so it's frightening.
00:21:44.220 And actually, I'm amazed, though.
00:21:45.840 The children are so joyful right now.
00:21:47.700 So we must be on the right track.
00:21:49.720 They must be getting some kind of graces.
00:21:51.300 But I'm just amazed at how joyful they are.
00:21:55.000 And I said, kids, aren't you worried?
00:21:56.160 They said, no, no.
00:21:57.720 Jesus is going to take care of it.
00:21:58.980 So they're better at trusting than I am.
00:22:01.400 But I'm very proud of Doug.
00:22:03.580 He was very – I'm really glad that he stood up.
00:22:07.200 He had to.
00:22:08.060 I mean, had we stayed, what else would have come down the pike?
00:22:11.160 You know, what else would we have had to give in to?
00:22:13.740 And I think it's very important not to give in in small things.
00:22:16.680 And I could say that for some of these priests around here or bishops or whoever.
00:22:21.080 If you're giving in now, stop.
00:22:23.580 You know, stand up for Jesus.
00:22:25.300 You won't regret it.
00:22:26.580 You'll be beaten up.
00:22:28.040 But God bless the ones who do.
00:22:30.300 And I got to say, my wife is the best.
00:22:32.460 She really is the best.
00:22:33.420 The woman's a saint.
00:22:35.220 You know, it's like in the line from Manfall Seasons where he says, why?
00:22:38.440 It's a lie and I'm married.
00:22:39.580 Well, that's the world's most assertive Canadian over here.
00:22:42.360 She's the absolute best.
00:22:43.880 I'm so proud of her.
00:22:44.820 And I'm so very blessed to have this woman willing to be my wife.
00:22:49.780 Oh, thank you.
00:22:51.140 Wow.
