00:00:00.000 To be afraid of a demon, if you are a faithful Christian, is betraying your faith, because
00:00:04.300 Christ destroyed all of their power.
00:00:06.440 If you are bound to him, demons are afraid of you.
00:00:11.300 Well, my friends, welcome to the John Henry Weston Show.
00:00:13.640 You know, there's a lot of demonic activity going on around us.
00:00:17.620 You can see it everywhere.
00:00:18.700 A lot of people are expressing it.
00:00:20.620 And that's why we've talked to a bunch of exorcists on how to fight this.
00:00:25.260 There's a new book out.
00:00:27.060 And the book is actually called The Most Powerful Saints for Exorcisms.
00:00:32.160 And that's very interesting.
00:00:33.460 You know, in every day, or every day if you're saying your rosary anyway, you pray the creed.
00:00:39.120 And in the creed, we talk about the communion of saints.
00:00:42.600 But how many people actually think about what that means?
00:00:45.580 We've got the author with us today, Charles Brownie.
00:00:47.580 You're going to want to stay tuned.
00:00:48.840 Charles, welcome to the program.
00:00:50.180 Yeah, thank you.
00:00:50.920 Thank you again for having me on.
00:00:52.000 Let's begin, as you always do, with the sign of the cross.
00:00:54.020 In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
00:01:01.020 So Charles, a very interesting book. You had an earlier book on exorcisms that was a great success. Tell us about that one.
00:01:08.140 Yeah, yeah, thank you. So the first one that really got me started, I'm doing this full time now with my own company, Slaying Dragons Press.
00:01:15.000 So this one, Slaying Dragons, is a compilation of the teachings of modern exorcists,
00:01:19.800 doctors of the church, kind of everything you need to know in spiritual warfare
00:01:23.200 and kind of demonology 101.
00:01:26.180 It's not scary at all.
00:01:27.160 It's very enlightening.
00:01:28.080 So this is the one, Slaying Dragons.
00:01:31.740 Yeah, that launched everything that I'm doing with this whole research
00:01:34.080 on what exorcists teach and how practical it is.
00:01:37.600 It's not terrifying.
00:01:38.840 It's very theological.
00:01:40.280 Indeed.
00:01:40.580 It's rather beautiful.
00:01:41.420 I love the headline of what they want you to know.
00:01:45.000 That was great. So we're in this situation of a real battle, and there's going to be a lot of
00:01:54.340 people right off the bat who, particularly coming from a Protestant perspective, which is very
00:02:00.500 common in America, of, yeah, you know, we're all called to cast out the demons, and we know how to
00:02:07.380 do that from the Bible. What's your advice there? What's the real theological background to all of
00:02:13.700 this. Yeah. So when it comes to exorcism, Jesus was the first exorcist. He is the great exorcist.
00:02:21.120 That's one of his principal ministries. If you look at the Gospels, it's not a sacrament,
00:02:25.660 which I always think is very fascinating. It's a sacramental. And the early church up to like the,
00:02:30.560 I don't know, Trent or sometime really discerned, like, where is the line between sacrament and
00:02:34.660 sacramental? That's kind of a different topic. But casting out demons was central to the Gospels
00:02:39.700 proclamation. And so you see holiness often accompany the casting out of demons. There are
00:02:45.320 great saints, which you can talk about who not being exorcists drove demons out of people because
00:02:49.520 of their holiness. So, but there is an authority. So there's a holiness, a fidelity to Christ is how
00:02:54.580 you achieve that holiness only through the church. And then you also have priests who only through
00:02:58.720 the church with permission of their bishops can cast out demons through exorcisms, through the
00:03:02.680 actual right. So it's not something open to everybody in the sense of the authority. You
00:03:07.560 have to be a priest delegated but spiritual combat is something we all enter into if we are holy you
00:03:13.540 know we're all in it whether we're holy or not we're just suffering from it if we're not holy
00:03:18.020 but if we're holy we can actually be you know beneficial to people now we've had a an exorcist
00:03:23.100 on before and they were talking about the authority structure about how especially
00:03:30.700 the husbands of a household can actually sort of cast out, if you will, demons because they're
00:03:39.640 in authority over their families and stuff like that. Does that figure into your study as well?
00:03:45.120 Yeah, that did come up in Slaying Dragons in this book. And then I wrote two books on the occult
00:03:51.120 after that, The Rise of the Occult and The Occult Among Us, Exposing the Occult. And those have
00:03:56.620 been endorsed by bishops and exorcists too so take a look there so the the corruption of the family
00:04:01.780 is a big deal so the demon does like to go after that authority structure this the stability
00:04:06.640 structure and the father is the head of the family this is a biblical and church church taught
00:04:11.900 reality the father is the head of the family and as pope one of the pope pious is a camera which
00:04:16.860 one said that the mother is the heart the father is the head the mother is the heart and together
00:04:21.620 they form a dynamic unity, but without crossing those boundaries, you know, the heart should make
00:04:27.480 the head very loving and charitable, but he remains the head. And there is the spiritual authority,
00:04:33.540 Pope Pius XII, I want to say, they're all great. All the Pope Piuses of the 20th century are great.
00:04:38.600 One of them said that the father's role is Episcopal. He uses that term Episcopal. He's
00:04:43.400 an Episcopal authority in the family. Like that really needs to be unpacked. And I think one way
00:04:48.580 it's being unpacked nowadays is through the teachings of exorcists. There's this practical
00:04:52.120 application where, like St. Joseph, fathers can step in and defend their bride and their children.
00:04:58.760 Absolutely beautiful. So, you know, in the church, it's true, every day in the creed, we say,
00:05:05.220 you know, we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints,
00:05:10.400 the forgiveness of sins. But I think most people are like really skimming over that,
00:05:16.000 the communion of saints bit. And if they are saying that, they're kind of thinking, well,
00:05:21.440 it's like, yeah, we're talking to our fellow Christians, just like it says in the Bible.
00:05:26.220 You know, it's the saints at Ephesus and the saints here and there. They're really our fellow
00:05:31.840 Christians. But tell us about the communion of saints and what it really is, what it really means.
00:05:37.900 Yeah. So the church is not divided at all, but as is explained to be in three different stages
00:05:44.140 or phases the church militant the church suffering so the church militant is on earth the church
00:05:49.460 suffering is in purgatory and the church triumphant is in heaven so those are the ones who have
00:05:53.620 lived gloriously you know also the ones who have finished purgatory however long that really takes
00:05:58.940 so well we know the one the communion of saints the the church triumphant is those saints those
00:06:04.420 christian men and women who have lived heroically here have suffered have been martyred have been
00:06:08.740 great preachers, just lived the heroic virtue and have achieved the crown. They have run the race.
00:06:14.760 They have finished it. They have been pleasing to God. They've died in his favor, died as his
00:06:19.020 friends, and have been taken to eternal glory. And that eternal glory is they are reigning with
00:06:24.260 Christ. This is something St. Paul talks about in the second letter of Timothy. They reign with
00:06:27.940 Christ. We can reign with Christ in heaven if we stay faithful. So that reigning is a real power.
00:06:34.960 It's a real efficacy, the communion of saints and that communion.
00:06:38.520 So they're the saints and there's this communion among the church in all three phases.
00:06:42.500 So we can receive the benefits of their victories.
00:06:46.260 And this is like indulgences, just general graces, intercession, patron saints, all that
00:06:51.000 stuff is them interceding for us based on what they merited by the holiness of the lives
00:06:55.560 here, cooperating with Christ as co-redeemers.
00:06:59.000 We're all called to be co-redeemers, members of the mystical body of Christ.
00:07:03.340 And if you look at the church's calendar, liturgical calendar, as I was mentioning before the interview,
00:07:07.180 I used to kind of overlook this until I started doing all this research.
00:07:10.300 The church depends on the saints.
00:07:12.880 The liturgical calendar revolves around their feast days.
00:07:16.260 I mean, that's just not, you know, we're just going to remember, what do we do on these days?
00:07:20.260 We say mass, let's remember the saints.
00:07:21.920 No, there's a reason.
00:07:22.780 The church depends.
00:07:24.120 Read the prayers.
00:07:24.720 The church depends on these great giants, these great champions to help us.
00:07:29.600 So how does that, though, figure into exorcism?
00:07:33.520 Yeah, so this is something, again, with slaying dragons, my first book where I really got into this, I overlooked this little detail.
00:07:40.040 It's a little detail. So the back of the book, this is the book we're talking about now, The Most Powerful Saints and Exorcisms.
00:07:44.960 It's chock full of information. Like I like to have all my books.
00:07:48.300 And I'm a co-author, too. Patrick O'Hearn, a great author, writes about the saints all the time.
00:07:51.940 We wrote it together. We became friends. God's providence. We're in the same town.
00:07:55.140 so the saints they if you listen to exorcist talk they talk about saints showing up you're like oh
00:08:01.240 you know so they kind of just mention it casually among all the other things that are really
00:08:04.320 practical like well saints show up wait a second what does it mean they showed up like and so he
00:08:09.280 really dove into that issue and in the very beginning so the back of the book i have an
00:08:13.400 overview of the rite of exorcism like two pages long one of the first things the priest does he
00:08:18.340 has everybody as himself the possessed person all the people helping the priest he makes a sign of
00:08:24.700 the cross and the foreheads of all the people sprinkles holy water on the possessed and then
00:08:27.960 he kneels and says the litany of the saints one of the first prayers before the exorcism gets
00:08:33.120 started is it's long the litany of the saints is in the back of the book too it's a it's a great
00:08:38.500 it's not just pray for us pray for us pray for us there are all these invocations all these saints
00:08:43.200 categories mentioned the holy innocents the martyrs the bishops the doctors all that's mentioned to
00:08:48.440 rally you're rallying the troops you're rallying the church triumphant say all right we're doing
00:08:53.600 this powerful sacramental to drive out the devil. We need everybody to step in. So that's where it
00:09:00.400 begins, and then there's more. Once the exorcism starts kind of playing out, that's when some of
00:09:05.400 these stories come into play. A world at war, a church in crisis. At times like these, it can be
00:09:12.460 difficult to know who to trust. That's why the mission of LifeSide News is to bring you the news
00:09:17.120 from the perspective of eternal truths. We aren't swayed by passing trends, and we don't follow
00:09:22.080 narratives pushed by those with power. But now we need your help. Our mission is entirely funded
00:09:27.800 by individual donors like you. We need to raise enough each quarter to keep LifeSite News online.
00:09:33.440 If you value LifeSite News' mission, please donate at the link below this video. U.S. residents can
00:09:38.740 also donate by texting LifeSiteNews to 50155. May God bless you. So give us an example of
00:09:48.820 how a saint helps in an exorcism because it it did how is this working though yeah so i had i
00:09:55.340 had some of those questions like they show up they appear like what does this mean you know so
00:09:59.560 that's one of the first questions i asked like i explained what are they doing are you seeing them
00:10:03.660 who's seeing them um so heaven is interceding so the church is supplied with grace from heaven
00:10:09.980 from christ from the treasury of merits from christ our lady and the saints so all this grace
00:10:15.580 is pouring into the sacramental of the rite of exorcism. So as it starts to unfold, the purpose
00:10:22.520 of the exorcism is to agitate the demon, to irritate him, to blame him for all of his sins,
00:10:26.620 make him feel awful, basically, to make him leave and command him in the name of Christ to leave,
00:10:31.400 to just break his hold on this person. So the exorcist will go through all the prayers of the
00:10:36.640 rite of exorcism, will do the litany of the saints, but they'll also be watching. When they name all
00:10:41.220 those saints in the litany of the saints often there's a reaction from the demon there's there's
00:10:45.980 like they'll like jump or twitch or just get all angry or maybe some kind of like eye-rolling thing
00:10:50.660 some kind of real manifestation changes when like saint bartholomew is named and they're like okay
00:10:55.920 so the bystanders the priest is still saying the prayer people are watching they're making a note
00:11:00.220 they tell father later like when you said saint bartholomew the demon really jerked or did
00:11:04.780 something or got angry it made this face at you so let's let's play on that so after they go through
00:11:09.540 the rite of exorcism, they'll come back and say, St. Bartholomew, pray for us. St. Bartholomew,
00:11:13.900 drive out this demon, whichever saint it is. Sometimes it's based on the relic. They'll
00:11:18.260 have relics. So it's like the relic of St. Gemma Gaugana, so the Gaugani. So they'll put the relic
00:11:23.520 on and invoke her by name. And then they'll look for reactions. Sometimes nothing happens,
00:11:28.660 but then there's this one, one saint sometimes or several saints. And sometimes the demon is
00:11:34.440 usually the demon who will see it. Sometimes the possessed person will have a little vision of
00:11:38.440 some sort and see the saint as well. But the demon will say, oh, that one in white is here
00:11:43.140 and make her go away. She's giving me this look. She's telling me I have to leave or the bearded
00:11:47.080 one or whatever it is. So they show up in various stages, sometimes towards the end. I think Father
00:11:52.020 Rupert said it was like the fifth of six stages, somewhere towards the end, the fourth or fifth
00:11:56.580 of the six stages that he has observed, that they'll show up. And then, of course, we can
00:12:02.080 talk about our lady. She comes in towards the end. Unbelievable. So give us an example of one
00:12:06.440 of the saints that you've heard of? Give us one of the anecdotes of what's happened during an
00:12:11.160 exorcism with one of the saints. Yeah. So among the ones that have been said to, so a lot of
00:12:16.180 saints will exert their influence and it's kind of mysterious. Some have been said to appear like
00:12:20.380 St. John the Baptist, St. Therese, St. Jimigalgani, St. Padre Pio, St. John Paul II, St. Joan of Arc
00:12:26.840 have all been said to appear. So like there's this apparition named by the demon that they're
00:12:31.540 appearing. There's one that I always like to bring up. Well, let's say there's two. There's
00:12:35.140 St. Mary of Jesus Crucified, and there's a big story there with her relics.
00:12:39.360 So her relic was applied to a case, and then the demon just started to go ballistic.
00:12:45.000 That's one of the terms you hear these exorcists use.
00:12:47.940 And the demon started saying, no, no, no, it's that nun, that nun, that nun.
00:12:50.900 I can't stand that nun.
00:12:52.560 She's saving people, saving souls in the Middle East before we can get to them.
00:12:56.560 They're dying well is one of the things that a demon said.
00:13:00.260 So there's that great story because Islam is really becoming an issue right now,
00:13:04.660 especially in Europe. But then St. Joseph, that's a great story. Not everybody sees St. Joseph. Not
00:13:09.520 all the exorcists see his presence. His presence really felt. But one exorcist did, I believe it
00:13:14.020 was Father Ripperker. We excerpted his testimony into the book that St. Joseph appeared with his
00:13:20.600 staff. This was just a great image. Walking around the room or around the possessed person,
00:13:25.440 just slamming his staff down on the ground over and over again. Every time he hit the ground with
00:13:30.080 staff, this shudder of terror went into the demon and the possessed person felt it and told the
00:13:35.960 exorcist that every time that St. Joseph smashes the staff on the ground, the demon just cries out
00:13:40.520 in pain. And I'm like, that's great. Because we were looking for stories from St. Joseph about
00:13:45.640 him, of course. One exorcist said, well, several of them said, we can't control who shows up. It's
00:13:50.540 God. God decides what saint intercedes and what exorcism. But it'd be nice if St. Joseph would
00:13:55.900 always show up, of course. That reminds me of that, the prayer of the St. Joseph's Terror of
00:14:00.540 Demons Prayer, because it's about, come with thy staff and smite the demons as they flee from thee.
00:14:06.620 So that's really something. Okay, so tell us about this. You mentioned something about
00:14:12.640 the particulars of certain saints and how that matches up to the particular
00:14:20.540 affliction that the possessed person's under perhaps the way in which they gave in to
00:14:28.100 temptation that got them possessed how does that work yeah so there's some kind again some kind of
00:14:31.900 mysterious relationship between between the saint and the and the demon there's this this nemesis
00:14:38.300 concept and we've heard a lot of exorcists talk about the issue of a nemesis and i had the privilege
00:14:44.040 of republishing and i quote this book in the most powerful saints this book it's called the scourge
00:14:49.020 of Demons by Father Gerolama, if that's how you pronounce his name, Father Menji from the 16th
00:14:55.180 century. It was the most popular spiritual warfare manual, Emmanuel for exorcists in the 16th century.
00:15:00.840 It was popular for like 300 years with Catholics and Protestants, everybody all over Europe. And I
00:15:05.860 got to publish the English translation, a new English translation from the Latin. But he talks
00:15:10.800 about, so this is 500 years ago. He talks about this issue of the nemesis, that there are certain
00:15:15.740 saints that are pitted against certain demons and the demons know that they have this kind of
00:15:21.540 arch enemy and the priest is permitted to ask the demon who is the saint that you fear the most
00:15:26.740 tell us his name because then we're going to bring him into the battle and i think that's great that
00:15:31.540 500 years ago we have documentation at least back till then this was before the roman ritual was put
00:15:36.260 together in 1614 after the council of trent so that was there probably goes back 500 more years
00:15:41.800 maybe a thousand more years maybe back to the beginning you know this documentation of this
00:15:45.580 happening so however it works it seems to be the victory you know you have a patron saint someone
00:15:52.020 who's established by the authority of the church to intercede on certain issues or with certain
00:15:57.720 struggles with vices so demons like to master a certain vice they like to encourage sin in us
00:16:03.440 they have to corrupt us and often people get possessed by one specific sin often it's you
00:16:09.140 Sexual sins, that's a big thing nowadays with pornography and all the other deviations we have to deal with.
00:16:14.380 So St. Mary Magdalene has been one that exorcists have called on because of this proliferation of impurity.
00:16:20.960 And she mastered that demon with our Lord's help, of course, because she was a victim of that sin and she conquered it.
00:16:27.880 And now she's one of the greatest saints in the history of the church, apostle to the apostles.
00:16:32.540 So there is this, the patron saints we need to take seriously.
00:16:36.200 And exorcists see it.
00:16:37.280 They see it playing out.
00:16:38.180 there's this arch nemesis, I think one, one saint. So sometimes demons will instigate the
00:16:44.660 persecution of a saint and even the martyrdom of that saint. And these demons have been around for,
00:16:49.640 you know, ever since the beginning. So exorcists are running into the same demon that Father Minji
00:16:53.900 500 years ago ran into now, same demon, because they don't die. So there may be a demon in the
00:16:59.160 past that instigated the murder of a saint. And then you bring that relic, the relic of that
00:17:04.220 saint into the exorcism case, possession case with that demon. And then there's this confrontation,
00:17:10.280 this epic battle, and the demon loses because his arch enemy, the one who beat him by being
00:17:15.320 martyred, conquered him. So there's this great interplay between the saints against the demons.
00:17:21.560 It's a funny concept because what we heard from our teaching was that the demons are
00:17:29.100 smarter than humans they are stronger than than any man um you know it's ridiculous for uh people
00:17:36.640 to try and say oh i'm gonna best the demon i'm going to do whatever um they might like you to
00:17:41.600 think so but that's not going to go very well for you is it that's right yeah um and that's one of
00:17:46.620 the things in uh as we mentioned in the beginning the the slaying dragons book this this was an
00:17:51.640 inspiration for me studying the the teachings of these exorcists because one of the aha moments was
00:17:56.660 this idea that that we must not fear the demons so that i thought well demons are demons we should
00:18:03.100 be terrified of them i mean they're demons it just makes sense but that's that's almost superstitious
00:18:08.640 to think a demon to be afraid of a demon if you are a faithful christian is betraying your faith
00:18:13.280 because christ destroyed all of their power if you are bound to him demons are afraid of you
00:18:18.880 and you should let them be afraid of you and you know with humility because they're not afraid of
00:18:24.500 you. They're afraid of your union with Christ. They see Christ in you. And that's like with
00:18:28.900 exorcists. The exorcists will say that the demon is not afraid of them. The demon is afraid of
00:18:33.440 Jesus standing in them and behind them. They see that power flowing through them.
00:18:39.320 So yeah, back to that. That's a really important point people need to realize is that we must be
00:18:44.140 prudent, humble, prayerful, devout, penitential, deep in our union with Christ, but fear no,
00:18:49.400 fear no demons despite how obvious it seems that we we should and here in practice then with the
00:18:56.440 with the saints in glory um it's sort of no contest the other way right exactly because
00:19:04.340 when the saints step in like it's not over and that's our lady when our lady steps in
00:19:09.660 it's just over demons demons cannot resist heaven cannot resist like our guardian angels so
00:19:16.360 So the teaching of the guardian angels, they come from the lower level of the nine choirs of angels, nine choirs of spirits.
00:19:21.700 Satan fell from the highest.
00:19:22.800 He was the highest angel.
00:19:24.500 St. Michael, an archangel.
00:19:26.220 So two up, you know, second from the last realm.
00:19:29.260 He was elevated.
00:19:30.480 Like he was the one that was really loved our Lord, loved our Lord with a special love and yelled out who is like God challenged Satan.
00:19:38.360 And God saw it, honored it and elevated him, gave him power over Satan and made him the chief of the of all the head, the head of the heavenly hosts.
00:19:46.360 though he was an archangel so our angels are the lowest level now that's a great dignity and but
00:19:52.780 now because they are glorified because they said yes to god they are stronger than satan so the
00:19:57.620 lowest level angel is stronger than the highest level demon and we participate you know we're
00:20:03.500 gonna be placed among the angels the hierarchy in heaven based on the the merit of our good deeds
00:20:09.700 and our love and our sacrifices here we will be placed among those angels in all nine realms all
00:20:15.660 nine choirs and have a certain degree of power against the demons. St. Paul even says that,
00:20:21.120 he says, know ye not that you will one day judge angels, meaning demons, like you will participate
00:20:27.920 in the condemnation of the demons at the end of time. He doesn't go into detail, but that's just,
00:20:34.200 that says it right there. What did, what did this do for you, for your family in terms of
00:20:39.780 your understanding of this and your relationship with the saint? Yeah. So, and that's such a,
00:20:44.520 it's a good question because along the way, uh, there's an eighth chapter. And now, um, so most
00:20:49.800 of the books that I have written, I've published myself with Slaying Dragons Press. This is the
00:20:53.360 first book that was published by Sophia Institute Press. They took the idea, they loved it and they
00:20:57.760 ran with it. Um, so we pitched to them. I've never had to pitch a book, you know, I've always just
00:21:01.940 written my own. So we pitched the book with a table of contents. And I don't think the final
00:21:07.120 chapter that's in this published book, I don't think the final chapter was there. The final
00:21:11.640 chapter is called a renewed devotion to the saints. And that chapter just kind of begged to
00:21:18.660 be written, you know, along the way, there was the spirit of, we need to call upon these saints
00:21:23.380 more. Like we're missing out on so much stuff. Like we've overlooked so much stuff. The exorcists
00:21:28.160 were so emphatic about the power of the saints, like their lives were changed by realizing how
00:21:33.740 much help they had from these heavenly patrons. So we wrote the chapter, a renewed devotion to
00:21:39.380 the saints encouraging people to like who who's your patron saint who are you named after what
00:21:43.480 day were you born what day were you baptized like when are these big feast days what relics do you
00:21:48.040 have in your house like do you have any saints in your family and to rely on the feast days because
00:21:54.180 it read the opening prayers read the prayers for all the feast days it's powerful the saints can
00:21:58.580 help us so in my work my work is always evolving it's not just spiritual warfare because it was
00:22:04.560 Slaying Dragons, the first book, incorporates spiritual warfare, sacramentals, sacraments,
00:22:09.340 and the saints.
00:22:10.300 And I think that's where Slaying Dragons Press, my own work, is going because I'm working
00:22:13.420 on a lot of books related to the saints now because I'm really seeing that this is one
00:22:17.100 of the many treasures that has been lost.
00:22:19.280 So many, as you know, have been lost in the last 60, 70 years.
00:22:24.200 So I think the natural love is kind of emerging.
00:22:29.140 And I can hand that on to my kids, as you were mentioning.
00:22:31.040 The natural love for the saints, just that they are here.
00:22:34.560 This is not an option.
00:22:36.020 This is not some strange devotion or an optional devotion like the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Scapula, all these other things.
00:22:44.280 The saints are part of the life of Christians, as these great sacramentals should be.
00:22:49.380 So they need to be our friends.
00:22:51.000 We need to rely upon them.
00:22:52.240 And every day, when you do your prayer, end it with, you know, St. Augustine, pray for me.
00:22:57.040 Or St. Monica, pray for me.
00:22:58.520 Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.
00:23:01.100 So I think that naturalness needs to return.
00:23:03.320 Indeed it does.
00:23:04.560 Indeed it does. Charles, thank you so much for joining us.
00:23:07.260 My friends, the most powerful saints in exorcism,
