The uncomfortable truth about the Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Summary

Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her platinum jubilee this weekend, and there's a lot going on in the UK and Commonwealth to celebrate. But is she really still Queen Elizabeth, or is she just a figurehead? And what does that even mean? On this episode of The John Henry Weston Show, we take a look at the Queen s relationship with the Crown, and why it's important to remember who she really is.

00:00:00.000 Today and Friday in England and all the Commonwealth, we are celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee,
00:00:05.680 an unbelievable 70 years as Queen. Her reign has witnessed stunning changes, but none more stunning
00:00:14.840 than abortion and many of the other evils she has been forced to sign off on. Well,
00:00:23.480 that's what we're going to be discussing on this episode of The John Henry Weston Show. Stay tuned.
00:00:30.000 The John Henry Weston Show.
00:00:59.980 To learn more about it, all of the expenses for this are being covered by sponsorships and ticket sales,
00:01:06.000 and it's going to be awesome. We have Jim Caviezel speaking. We have Jason Jones emceeing.
00:01:11.000 You're going to want to come out and see all the folks.
00:01:13.980 In 1850, my namesake, John Henry Cardinal Newman, published the following terrifying and striking words,
00:01:22.520 The Catholic Church holds it better for the sun and moon to drop from heaven, for the earth to fail,
00:01:32.220 and for all the many millions on it to die of starvation in extremist agony,
00:01:38.480 as far as temporal affliction goes, rather than one soul.
00:01:44.740 I will not say should be lost, but should commit one single venial sin,
00:01:52.160 should tell one willful untruth, or should steal one poor farthing without excuse.
00:01:58.980 Now, that published text was from a lecture on the topic of certain difficulties which Anglicans felt about becoming Catholics.
00:02:08.900 He actually repeated this same text again in his famous biography in 1864.
00:02:14.960 So, in fact, he said it three times.
00:02:19.820 And let's make sure we understand what it means.
00:02:22.580 The Catholic Church holds it better that all these terrible things would happen
00:02:26.940 rather than just one person committing one willful venial sin.
00:02:33.520 That's actually how evil sin is.
00:02:37.360 Even just venial sin.
00:02:39.880 That should make us all shudder.
00:02:41.620 And this text from Cardinal Newman is perhaps just a more vivid way of saying shorter phrases, which we all know.
00:02:51.800 The ends don't justify the means, or we can't do evil that good may come of it.
00:02:57.840 So, I'm going to say some things today which are going to be perhaps unpopular.
00:03:04.100 Here in Canada, we think of our leader as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
00:03:07.920 So, he's the leader of the government, a position which we influence by voting.
00:03:12.960 But in fact, the monarch is still Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen of the United Kingdom.
00:03:20.020 You might know, certainly our friends in England can't miss it with all the Union flags everywhere,
00:03:25.160 that this weekend is the celebration of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth.
00:03:30.840 She's 70 years of her coronation.
00:03:35.080 So, there are lots of celebrations going on.
00:03:37.480 Queen Elizabeth is held up as really almost a heroine.
00:03:42.180 One of the few remaining world figures who will actually name our Lord Jesus Christ.
00:03:47.700 Now, many think of the Queen as some kind of just figurehead.
00:03:52.820 In a certain sense, she is.
00:03:54.240 She does not directly, at least not openly, engage in any decisions about politics or life of the country,
00:04:01.800 or really any of the Commonwealth countries either.
00:04:06.160 Or even in England and the UK, for that matter.
00:04:09.260 If she wields any influence at all, it's really behind the scenes.
00:04:13.240 But actually, there's a lot more going on here.
00:04:16.060 There's some complex historical and legal things which we won't go into here,
00:04:20.220 which make Canada's situation a bit different to how it is in the UK,
00:04:24.180 but there are definitely points of comparison.
00:04:27.640 The United Kingdom is not a republic like the United States.
00:04:30.680 It's a constitutional monarchy.
00:04:32.980 And so are we in many senses here in Canada.
00:04:37.200 What this means is that the crown has drawn back the exercise of its powers
00:04:41.860 and, in practice, allowed the machinery of government to function as if it were a democracy.
00:04:47.700 It's something that looks and acts like a separation of powers.
00:04:51.380 But in fact, they're all working in the name of the crown, in the name of Her Majesty the Queen.
00:04:56.740 In theory, she could end this arrangement and start ruling like a proper monarch at any time.
00:05:04.140 But I'm telling you this to make clear that nothing is made law by the UK House of Parliament
00:05:10.580 or by Boris Johnson's government.
00:05:12.980 These bodies hash out the bill, and then it is presented to her for royal assent,
00:05:20.220 at which point it becomes law.
00:05:22.380 In Canada, it's similar, actually, because bills receive royal assent in the Queen's name
00:05:27.120 from other officials like the governor general or his deputies.
00:05:30.860 By convention, the Queen never refuses royal assent.
00:05:35.700 For the last several centuries, this has been very rare across remaining monarchies of the world.
00:05:40.940 The reason is obvious.
00:05:43.280 If this happened, the appearance and facade of a democracy would disappear,
00:05:47.300 and an unelected, hereditary leader would be interfering in the decisions of an elected body.
00:05:54.640 Now, I'm not saying that that's good or bad.
00:05:57.900 It's just what it is.
00:05:59.880 But let's be clear about what it means.
00:06:02.660 It means that when bills are presented to Queen Elizabeth,
00:06:06.980 they do not become law until she gives them her assent.
00:06:11.940 She has the power to prevent them from becoming law,
00:06:15.280 albeit with, you know, there would be like a massive constitutional crisis that would cause.
00:06:21.300 And really, real politic means that these laws will find some other non-constitutional way
00:06:27.800 in getting through, or even a revolution.
00:06:32.700 So, she also has another power, which she can exercise at any time.
00:06:39.080 And that is the power to abdicate, to leave the throne.
00:06:44.960 Now, if you're starting to feel uncomfortable, it's actually about to get worse.
00:06:49.640 In 1967, Queen Elizabeth II was presented with what became the Abortion Act.
00:06:54.280 As the name suggests, it is the act which made abortion legal
00:06:58.180 in a wide set of situations up to about 28 weeks gestation.
00:07:02.460 As a result of this act, England is set to have their 10 millionth abortion this year.
00:07:09.940 That's 10 million unborn babies murdered thanks to abortion,
00:07:15.640 which only became legal because of the royal assent given to that act in 1967.
00:07:22.160 And there's no sign of this horror stopping.
00:07:28.700 Would Roe v. Wade in 1973 have been possible without Queen Elizabeth's royal assent to the Abortion Act?
00:07:36.200 That's a very important question. Think about it.
00:07:38.880 1967 in England was the Abortion Act.
00:07:42.340 Roe v. Wade only came in 1973.
00:07:44.380 And England does lead the way in a lot of senses.
00:07:47.220 Even in Canada, abortion only came in 1969, again following England.
00:07:54.200 So I want you to imagine, just for a moment, being Queen Elizabeth.
00:07:59.760 Don't think about the constitutional crisis.
00:08:01.980 Don't think about the media or anything like that.
00:08:04.540 It's just you, your royal seal, and this law.
00:08:08.560 Could you give this law your assent?
00:08:14.140 Well, would it not be better to face the consequences of a constitutional crisis
00:08:20.260 than give your free assent to such an abomination?
00:08:24.240 Or would it not be better to at least abdicate?
00:08:29.080 But let's move on.
00:08:30.300 In 1967, Queen Elizabeth gave her royal assent to what became the Sexual Offenses Act,
00:08:34.760 and this legalized homosexual activity.
00:08:36.860 In 2013, Queen Elizabeth consummated the work begun by this act by giving her royal assent
00:08:44.040 to the bill which introduced homosexual marriage into law in England and Wales.
00:08:49.360 The combination of these laws with other provisions of law means that children are being taught
00:08:55.240 about these things in schools, and small businesses like bed and breakfasts and bakers
00:08:59.940 are being penalized for not being equal enough.
00:09:03.480 And again, this happened because of the royal assent given by Queen Elizabeth.
00:09:09.900 Well, what else can we talk about?
00:09:13.200 How about the royal assent to the 2008 law that allows scientists to make human-animal hybrids
00:09:19.200 for stem cell research?
00:09:20.500 And what about all the royal assent for the different divorce laws?
00:09:24.180 Over the last 70 years, in 1969, the royal assent radically liberalized divorce laws in England
00:09:30.860 and Wales, and further laws, all with royal assent, liberalized things further over the
00:09:38.120 following decades.
00:09:38.940 Last of all, let's recall the last few years.
00:09:43.920 England seems to have been one of the better places to be under the COVID madness, but nonetheless,
00:09:49.000 Queen Elizabeth gave royal assent to laws which allowed tyrannical government by ministers,
00:09:53.520 along with everything we remember so well, allowing the government to lock everyone in their homes,
00:09:58.880 restrict freedom of movement, close businesses, detain those suspected of COVID,
00:10:03.600 close schools, and so on.
00:10:05.500 And all of this happened because the Queen gave royal assent.
00:10:11.840 Now, do you think that Queen Elizabeth will refuse royal assent to a bill mandating vaccines
00:10:18.420 for her subjects, or a social credit system, or a one-child policy, or anything?
00:10:26.740 Now, perhaps she thinks she has good reasons for this.
00:10:31.700 Perhaps she thinks that it's better to retain her position and constitutional peace,
00:10:36.500 because in that way, she can work some, perhaps, greater good, or at least prevent further evils.
00:10:44.040 But let's not kid ourselves with the idea that it could be better to assent so as to keep one's position,
00:10:50.400 so as to continue exercising a good influence.
00:10:54.040 Ten million dead babies is bad enough.
00:10:56.880 How much is your good influence behind the scenes worth in the face of ten million dead babies and counting?
00:11:05.200 And if the cost of maintaining some higher good is ten million dead babies,
00:11:10.600 then all these immoral laws and the toleration of absolute tyranny under COVID,
00:11:16.280 what exactly is being conserved or preserved here anyway?
00:11:20.560 I don't say this in judgment.
00:11:24.340 I don't know the state of her soul.
00:11:26.420 I wish her good in this life and in the next, but we're talking about the facts here.
00:11:31.680 Others might say that these laws would have gone through with or without her assent,
00:11:36.100 that not only would she cause a constitutional crisis, but also she would be unable to stop them anyway.
00:11:42.420 But you know what? That's irrelevant.
00:11:44.340 Let's deal with what's real, not with what's fictional or counterfactual scenarios.
00:11:48.180 These terrible, immoral laws, because actually, unjust laws, no law at all,
00:11:54.760 but these so-called laws were passed with her royal assent.
00:11:59.300 She has chosen to cooperate with them.
00:12:02.120 It's nonsense to say that she had no choice,
00:12:04.440 even if the crushing pressures and reality of her situation are unknown to mere subjects.
00:12:10.100 We can have compassion on her state, even while being real.
00:12:15.760 To paraphrase St. Thomas More in the film A Man for All Seasons, he said, and I quote,
00:12:20.240 Your Majesty, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world, but for the crown.
00:12:27.100 And that's what's interesting here, even if we don't know the state of her soul.
00:12:33.640 Not the legal consequences of her assent, but Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth herself,
00:12:38.420 and what she has done to herself by all these compromises and assent given to evil through her reign.
00:12:45.680 So this Jubilee weekend, if you're benefiting from the holidays, enjoying them,
00:12:52.140 but be aware of what you're celebrating.
00:12:54.980 And even more than anything, for we have a duty in piety to pray for our rulers.
00:13:01.560 Pray for the Queen.
