00:00:00.000 In the Bible we see Herod. Herod wants to kill the child Jesus and because he can't raise him at that
00:00:06.720 moment he orders for the killing of all the young ones two years and below. What is that? It is still
00:00:13.980 there today. Hello friends we are here. Jim and I just arrived in Kenya. We were in Uganda before
00:00:27.520 we're in Kenya now and it is incredible. You know one thing that we noticed right away when we got to
00:00:33.560 Kenya was the culture of welcome. They call it caribou here and we're taught to say asante asante
00:00:40.040 sana which means thank you very much and it has been an amazing welcome. We were just at mass this
00:00:47.660 morning we drove from Nairobi to Ketui about two hours and we were just at a beautiful mass where
00:00:54.280 this bishop whom we're going to talk to now gave a homily that was truly amazing. One that was
00:00:59.480 very forthright on the teachings of the church. All the hard ones that so many of the faithful
00:01:06.740 in Canada, in America, even in Europe are unwilling to talk about. You see we've come to Africa to study
00:01:15.160 how they are standing up against the pressures to go against life and family. Pressures which
00:01:21.520 almost the whole of America, Canada and Europe have fallen to. We are overwhelmed by the LGBT
00:01:28.560 agenda, the agenda against life and yet here in Africa they're standing firm. How is that even
00:01:34.380 possible when you've got the administrations, Biden, Trudeau, all of Europe, the EU and not only them
00:01:40.440 also huge corporations trying to fund their way into Africa and change their culture. They're not
00:01:46.160 letting it happen. They're standing firm amidst this awful pressure. We're here to find out how
00:01:51.800 they're doing that. So you've got to stay tuned for this episode of the John Henry Weston Show
00:01:56.020 with the Bishop of Ketui, Joseph Molenga.

00:03:26.020 In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
00:03:39.000 I am Bishop Joseph Mwangela of the Catholic Church of Ketui here in Kenya. I am also the chairman in the Kenya Catholic Bishops Commission of Lay and Pastoral Apostles.
00:03:54.940 What is the heart of the Church of Ketui here in Kenya and in Africa is the family. We are one. And as people, we work together and work together as a community. A child belongs to the community. Although you have a father and a mother, but you are a child of a community.
00:04:16.140 When you succeed, the community succeeds. When you fail, the community fails. And that's the cement that is there. Most of the activities are done by families in communion as one. And the idea of a church, right from the time when we talk about the church in Africa, the synod of Africa, is that the church has a family of the people of God.
00:04:41.560 So the idea of a family is very crucial. It binds us together. We work together. And we like to move as brothers and sisters. The only drawback is when, because you are 42 tribes, when sometimes we feel like this belongs to that tribe and I belong to this tribe.
00:04:59.160 But in Jesus Christ, we see ourselves as brothers and sisters and try to work together in harmon, to kill divisions and to promote harmon. But the family is very crucial. You have to grow together.
00:05:11.560 Loving each other as brothers and loving each other, loving each other as brothers and sisters, loving our families, and having that sense of belonging.
00:05:17.880 As a church, we promote that concept, that the greatest asset that we have in any family is the binding together, the husband and wife and their children.
00:05:28.520 And for many, many families, many parents, their greatest investment is in their own children.
00:05:36.680 It's not the amount of money that they have in their banks, but how well they take of their children.
00:05:42.020 And the greatest sorrow is when a family has invested in the young ones.
00:05:47.420 Then they absorb bad morals.
00:05:50.080 They get in drug addiction.
00:05:52.140 They go into drink.
00:05:53.300 They go into moral ways of living.
00:05:54.980 That hurts the family.
00:05:57.380 It hurts the community.
00:05:59.160 Because there are those who love, others who don't love you.
00:06:02.100 When those who are succeeding, they see, the others see them now getting children who are not doing the right thing in the family, becoming irresponsible.
00:06:11.500 The others will rejoice.
00:06:12.500 It is like a competition.
00:06:13.580 But essentially, we rejoice in growing together and lifting each other so that we grow together.
00:06:19.500 The teachings of the church have helped us to grow.
00:06:21.600 That love of the family, love of children as a gift from God, from birth, from actual conception to natural death.
00:06:30.020 And liking that and accepting it in spite of its challenges, knowing that the beauty of creation, children are always given as a gift from God.
00:06:40.960 And are accepted as such.
00:06:42.180 But as you get these pressures from outside, with the people growing, you need a smaller family.
00:06:48.140 Needless to say, because of the work you are doing, the amount of money needed to bring up children.
00:06:53.540 This can be a case where now we are saying, while everyone is a gift, you must get children whom you are able to bring up.
00:07:00.660 But you cannot see children as a threat.
00:07:03.240 In the Bible, we see Herod.
00:07:05.240 Herod wants to kill the child Jesus.
00:07:07.600 And because He can't raise them at that moment, He orders for the killing of all the young ones, two years and below.
00:07:15.360 What is that?
00:07:16.760 It is still there today.
00:07:18.420 When people are frightened because of young ones, if I fear to get a child, if I fear to get two children, then there will even be a strain in that family.
00:07:27.360 So we encourage our people, love children, love one another.
00:07:31.460 It is a gift from God.
00:07:32.880 Let's bring up our children in ways of morals to be God-fearing.
00:07:36.320 Because of this is where we are getting vocations.
00:07:39.140 There is going to be a crisis of vocations everywhere throughout the world if we don't embrace a family, if we don't love children and show them the right way.
00:07:47.860 So for us, it is great openness to all the cultures of the world, to all practices, encouraging our people, loving them, loving every child.
00:07:57.320 Even in the disabilities, we say here, inability.
00:08:01.780 Disability is not inability.
00:08:03.040 You can be disabled, but you also have many lessons to teach to the community and the people.
00:08:08.860 The limitation that people have.
00:08:10.580 Then as they grow, we need to accept everyone in spite of their challenges and what they go through.
00:08:16.560 But we must hold on to the values and the teachings of the church, which again needs to be put in the laws of the country.
00:08:24.080 We don't want a minority to come with an unchanter and impose it on others, to say now, maybe to have two or three children is bad.
00:08:32.520 Maybe for you is bad, but how intrinsically bad is it?
00:08:36.120 Is it to have many cars?
00:08:37.740 Is it to have big houses or to embrace life as it comes?
00:08:41.820 And life is from natural conception.
00:08:44.900 From the time of conception up to the time of natural death is life from God.
00:08:49.640 Then there are ways of family planning, but everything comes as a gift from God.
00:08:54.340 So that mainly is the joy of us in the country.
00:08:58.520 And being in charge of the pastor and the apostolate is telling our people to grow this fabric that holds us together.
00:09:06.780 They love one another so that there is stability in that marriage.
00:09:10.380 There is love between husband and wife.
00:09:12.860 And they accept the gifts that they get from God as they get from God.
00:09:17.040 We welcome children, we show them the right way, and these are going to be the light of the world.
00:09:23.560 Light of the world.
00:09:24.440 And indeed, the whole world, because once they grow well, a child doesn't just blow to the parents.
00:09:29.540 We'll be a benefit to the whole community and to the whole world as a gift that comes from God.
00:09:35.880 Absolutely.
00:09:36.320 One of the things that you said in your homily at Mass, which was startling to us from America,
00:09:42.300 was that you talked explicitly about encouraging young people to not go down the ways that are immoral,
00:09:49.800 not go down the ways that are against the values that you have.
00:09:54.560 And you were very specific about girls shouldn't be kissing one another and things like this.
00:09:59.460 The need to be explicit so that they all understand is very important.
00:10:03.180 It's something that really isn't done much in all of the West.
00:10:07.840 Why that kind of forthrightness?
00:10:10.420 Why do you care to explain it so specifically?
00:10:13.360 It is because, as I said, now, today we were lodging those who did their, for the standard eight exams,
00:10:21.620 primary school exams last year, and now they are joining form one, secondary schools.
00:10:26.420 They are being uprooted from their locality, joining now other schools where they'll be meeting other students
00:10:33.200 from other different parts of the country.
00:10:35.480 They'll be studying together.
00:10:37.360 These, in a way, may be foreign to them, but you are meeting, and each one is bringing their values.
00:10:42.060 So, in most of the schools, they are saying, we don't tolerate this.
00:10:46.000 So, if you come, you cannot be initiated by others into things that are very foreign to you.
00:10:52.280 If it's boys, and then they are coming to a school, they are just young,
00:10:55.940 then they find maybe they are seniors, those who are in form three, form four.
00:10:59.460 Maybe they have gone into homosexuality or lesbianism or whatever it is by learning or because it's in them.
00:11:06.600 You know, the one who is coming is to be protected.
00:11:08.540 I don't want to go into the idea of where they became or not there,
00:11:12.760 but the schools are very keen on saying, no, we understand whatever orientation you may have,
00:11:17.300 but we must protect the innocent ones who are coming.
00:11:20.840 They just come from their families.
00:11:23.000 How do they get introduced into ways which are strange to them?
00:11:27.200 So, it's upon the schools as a moral aspect to respect the orientation of each child
00:11:33.200 and respect these children who are coming into their schools that they don't learn habits
00:11:38.620 which are very strange to their own way of life.
00:11:42.220 And this must be very forthright because you're not talking about a gay student,
00:11:47.120 a lesbian student coming in and joining others who are gay, whatever it could be.
00:11:51.460 I don't want to go into that, but I'm talking about a children from their families,
00:11:55.820 a father and mother who is caring for a child and wants them to grow as they have learned.
00:12:00.600 They should not go to secondary schools, to universities, colleges to learn things that are very strange to them
00:12:06.680 by imposition or by seduction that they find themselves in because they are also young and they are being formed.
00:12:14.740 You can not tell me this is the orientation if they are learning it from a group of people who are into that.
00:12:19.580 Just a quick note before we return.

00:12:43.800 And now, back to the video.
00:12:45.180 The church has to respond to very difficult questions today because culture, society is all over the place.
00:12:55.440 How would you respond to someone who says, well, it's all about love.
00:12:59.240 You don't love these people because these two guys, they love one another.
00:13:04.040 And you're saying that they can't have that love.
00:13:06.820 Aren't you for love?
00:13:07.700 Even if it's love between them and that's what they think they have, how they learn is something different.
00:13:13.120 But I cannot come and ratify this and universalize what just belongs to me.
00:13:19.940 Like a group of love for the church, I have chosen to become a priest and I study for priesthood.
00:13:25.620 Someone else who is not called priesthood goes to do what they want to do and they become married and they follow that as their way of life.
00:13:32.240 So my whole life cannot say my love for the church and love for priesthood.
00:13:36.900 Everybody else should be in love for that.
00:13:39.700 And essentially the church says the marriage between a man and a woman and those, they love each other because they must be bonded by love.
00:13:47.100 That's what we mainly know.
00:13:48.640 How the others came, we need to study more.
00:13:50.760 But I cannot now look and see because the love is the love of God and love of neighbor.
00:13:54.600 If I love Satan, for example, do I impose it on others also to be loving Satan because it's a matter of love?
00:14:01.360 Because I love money, do I go and steal?
00:14:04.000 Because I love this.
00:14:05.000 So love is that we are told love and do whatever you will, that's St. Augustine.
00:14:08.540 But it must be true, sincere love based on God and the principles of God.
00:14:13.440 So we can, let me, let's not push the horizons too much that we go beyond what is now accepted.
00:14:20.420 If it is love within a family, like I may pose, you are married and you are a wife.
00:14:27.020 And then she loves your brother there whom you work together and he loves her.
00:14:33.260 Is that love now, should that now come into their communion that they start living as husband and wife?
00:14:38.180 The Bible tells us that is our daughter because love between husband and wife is not between husband and somebody else's wife.
00:14:45.820 So we must define love as it is, not the way I want it to look like.
00:14:49.760 Otherwise, you can justify anything, even using the Bible, if it's a matter of justification.
00:14:55.540 So the whole idea of love is love God and do whatever you will, but you must obey the commandments of God.
00:15:02.020 So that you show me this is real love and I'm putting it in the context of what I have done.
00:15:06.720 What do you say to those who say, oh, you must hate gays and lesbians because you show them so much hatred?
00:15:14.620 Is there a hatred?
00:15:15.400 You know, it's being, it's called homophobia.
00:15:18.020 Homophobia, you hate the other person because of what they are.
00:15:21.220 You can hate the other person because I'm African, you're European.
00:15:24.600 I hate you because you're this and I'm this.
00:15:27.580 These are the divisions because in Jesus, there is no race, there is no sex, there is no man or woman.
00:15:33.420 We are all children of God.
00:15:34.820 So everybody essentially is a child of God and we must love each other.
00:15:39.700 The whole thing we even say, even in the broadest way we say, we hate sin, but we must also love the sinners.
00:15:47.880 Those who have also do prison chaplaincy, go there and give the ministry to those people.
00:15:52.440 Even someone who is about to be earned, even if it's by law, needs someone to go there and then join with them.
00:15:58.700 That's their last minute.
00:15:59.720 So in terms of love of one another, we don't have to bring racism.
00:16:05.300 We don't have to bring in the divisions because of sex, because of who you are.
00:16:09.880 We must love all people.
00:16:11.960 We must love them as they are.
00:16:13.700 They must love themselves as they are without any group imposing an agenda on the other.
00:16:19.280 And then because if I am lame, I don't have to make other people walk limping so that they identify with me.
00:16:26.760 Because I limp, you must also limp.
00:16:28.660 I will identify with you.
00:16:30.460 I will love you as you are, but I will walk straight because I am my two feet and I am able to go.
00:16:35.760 I will find you on the road.
00:16:36.980 When you are moving, you have no car.
00:16:38.800 You are just there and the sun is hot.
00:16:40.900 I will give you a lift, but I will not leave my car there and walk with you because you are walking.
00:16:46.000 So you love other people and don't blow dust over you.
00:16:49.080 But I accept the way you are.
00:16:50.340 I accept the way you are.
00:16:51.700 Respecting also the boundaries of each person.
00:16:56.020 So hatred is not in the Bible.
00:16:58.660 It is not that among any group we must love all people in spite of their situation.
00:17:04.360 But nobody should also hate me because I am different from them.
00:17:08.600 Powerful minority can be a dangerous thing.
00:17:11.880 So where there is a small group with an agenda, they must also respect the masses.
00:17:16.200 It is not about how much power you have even as an individual.
00:17:18.520 The powers you have as a bishop or as whoever, but practicing the law of God and loving all people are without exception.
00:17:26.220 Like the good Samaritan, open our hearts, broaden our horizons, travel and see other people.
00:17:33.020 And you accept more people as you live with them.
00:17:35.820 Immerse yourself into the church without being subsumed into that.
00:17:40.560 That you don't go and find people who are lost their way and you get lost together.
00:17:45.580 We go into the sea to save those who are drowning, not to go and drown together.
00:17:49.660 Finally, on the pressures that you're receiving, as a church too, but your governments are receiving pressure.
00:17:56.600 Basically, your whole community is receiving pressure from the international sphere, particularly from Europe and America.
00:18:03.580 But also from these big corporations with so much money.
00:18:07.760 Have you felt that pressure and what do you make of it?
00:18:10.620 Well, someone said, an idea whose time has come cannot be stopped.
00:18:17.180 When things have to change, they change.
00:18:19.980 But the idea of pressure is not what brings change.
00:18:24.120 And this is where people have to be alert on everything.
00:18:26.880 And on everything that we realize, the content, we have tried to fight even education.
00:18:34.540 What is put in our syllabus?
00:18:36.280 What are our children taught?
00:18:38.000 What value comes?
00:18:39.600 And we have to also compare what is happening in other countries and how has it helped them?
00:18:44.220 Which way did people go and how did they start?
00:18:47.100 How did they lose their way?
00:18:48.600 Why do we have many vocations now?
00:18:50.400 Why do we have families which are strong and stable?
00:18:52.820 The whole idea about women's liberation came and we want women to be liberated.
00:18:57.800 But I don't want families just to break down because we are giving liberation to women.
00:19:03.140 I don't want men to be fought by their wives because they are fighting for their equality.
00:19:08.460 It's looking at what is good in our marriage.
00:19:11.220 What is bad in it?
00:19:12.340 What can it be purified?
00:19:13.700 Because no culture on its own is enough.
00:19:18.180 But no culture should be made superior.
00:19:20.060 My cause on faith and culture.
00:19:21.480 We have to look at every culture and immerse that faith into that without one becoming the overall, which is imposing itself.
00:19:29.800 We don't have to be Eurocentric.
00:19:31.980 We deserve to be Afrocentric, America-centric, whatever it is.
00:19:36.180 Looking at what good is coming from each continent.
00:19:39.640 How can it blend with the others?
00:19:41.380 And how does it help me to expand my view of the world?
00:19:45.180 And then not to allow whether it's the multinationals, whether they are governments, whether they are individuals, to impose their agenda.
00:19:53.220 We look at it.
00:19:54.380 If there is something good in it, we absorb and we take it.
00:19:57.040 But as we say, you cannot swallow everything who, clan and sinker.
00:20:01.200 It cannot be thrown down your throat that, as a government, unless you accept this, we are not going to fund you.
00:20:07.460 Unless you accept this, we are not going to do this to you or get this so that you accept.
00:20:11.820 We do whichever way.
00:20:13.100 That we are not driving an agenda of an individual, of a group, small group, or big group, a multinational, a government, a division of a group of people, by doing the will of God.
00:20:24.940 And actually, indeed, my own motto is that your will be done.
00:20:29.920 And that's the will of God, not the will of an individual, not mine, not the will of some sponsors, not the will of this group, but the will of God, which you must always seek to do.
00:20:39.320 These forces will always come.
00:20:40.780 There will always be pressure.
00:20:42.040 But you know, you must always carry the cross.
00:20:44.220 You must resist the pressure.
00:20:46.220 You can be marked that you are the one again at this, so we are going to sideline you.
00:20:50.800 This is going to happen.
00:20:51.720 But a church must be a church which will face even persecution because of standing for the truth.
00:20:57.600 But let's also not be looking for persecution when it is not.
00:21:00.920 What needs to be heard is the voice of the church because you have the power.
00:21:05.320 The voice of God should reverberate through us to be heard, speaking about the truth, about the values, and doing that which is right.
00:21:13.640 And attracting people like the light.
00:21:15.800 You may say we are the light of the world, sort of the earth.
00:21:18.700 And if we are tasteless as a church, where do we go?
00:21:22.160 We must have the taste, attract people.
00:21:25.040 Even if it means martyrdom, that we be ready and firm to stand for it and stand for an unchangered, which is like the Gospels.
00:21:32.400 So the Gospel values, they will be eternal at all times, in all places, to all people.
00:21:38.280 So that now we move and challenge people.
00:21:40.800 And people, when they are challenged, they realize what is good.
00:21:43.620 In spite of what conditions, they will embrace it.
00:21:46.340 Jesus started as one person with the gang of 12 apostles.
00:21:51.280 Look at how it is to spread the other world.
00:21:53.180 They are forced in everywhere.
00:21:54.140 The church are dying in some places, but they are also filled up in other places.
00:21:58.500 So the Spirit of God will always be with us, will join with us.
00:22:01.460 And that's what I believe in the Spirit of God, who moves us and blows wherever He wills.
00:22:06.280 And I see a very, very brilliant future.
00:22:08.980 And the church should overcome.
00:22:10.660 Because the God, everything is possible.
00:22:12.980 So a lot of them being frightened, what is happening, what's happening.
00:22:16.720 These are forces, as you saw in the beginning of persecution, St. Paul, when they started this, and then the early church.
00:22:23.420 They are told, if this thing comes from human beings, it will come and go.
00:22:27.860 If it comes from God, it will remain.
00:22:30.360 More than 2,000 years, Christ says you're standing strong.
00:22:33.580 Maybe it's a new time, a reawakening, to wake up and realize what we need to stand for as Christians.
00:22:39.140 And stand up for that, and God will always be with us.
00:22:42.800 You said in your homily that you here might be a light to the world, that Kenya might be a light to the world.
00:22:49.420 We're really hoping so.
00:22:51.480 In America, I think a lot of the Christians in America are, because we do look to Africa as the last man standing for the truth of the gospel values.
00:23:00.480 Do you have any advice for us that you would suggest that we can do to recapture our love for life, love for family in America and all of the West?
00:23:10.660 I have visited America myself.
00:23:12.420 I've been there several times.
00:23:13.740 I've seen the all livelihoods of the churches.
00:23:16.300 You can have the best and the worst in every place.
00:23:19.220 Today is a Sunday, and if you go around the streets here, you may find some people who have not gone to church.
00:23:24.040 Some drunken people who are sleeping in the trenches.
00:23:26.740 But you also go to the churches, and they are full.
00:23:28.800 There are people who are in bars last night, and they didn't come.
00:23:32.220 But not to say the church in Africa is to be like the light to all nations, to all nations.
00:23:39.300 Even the gospel is preached to the gender, or that's what we call them in the nation.
00:23:42.120 But to all ends, you start from where the faith is to where it is not.
00:23:46.480 And the same for Africa, because you have the abounding number of vocations, you are able to go to those who brought the faith to us, so that we give back.
00:23:56.560 You are not going, the church doesn't conquer, but we are sharing the gifts of the church.
00:24:01.520 What I have, the richness here, and the poverty elsewhere.
00:24:05.720 If there is poverty or vocations, why don't I share the vocations which I have?
00:24:09.400 And sincere vocations that you are there to serve the Lord.
00:24:12.660 As the people were called, they came here as missionaries.
00:24:15.780 Very tough situation, and they conquered.
00:24:18.180 They brought us the faith.
00:24:19.460 We embraced it, and we are now continuing it.
00:24:21.420 It is, can be said when the World Cup was in Africa, South Africa, this is the hour of Africa.
00:24:27.700 So Africa can also give a lot to the world by showing how we celebrate, how beautiful a celebration can be.
00:24:34.760 It's not just when you go, within 30 minutes you finish, but you celebrate, and everybody participates.
00:24:40.200 It's not being done for you.
00:24:41.760 It is active participation.
00:24:43.700 Listen to the voice of God, and abandoning ourselves totally to God, and working in the old church so that we move forward.
00:24:50.060 So I think that is it, and God's blessings are with us.
00:24:53.920 Excellency, might I ask that you could give a blessing to our viewers?
00:24:57.780 Thank you.
00:24:58.880 To our viewers, blessings from here in Kenya, here in Ketui.
00:25:03.240 May we grow together, and may the church always remain a light where there is darkness.
00:25:08.360 And we will remain with taste in whatever we do, that we may attract people to this great food in the church, whether you're Christ.
00:25:16.000 We might God bless you all, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
00:25:21.640 Amen.
00:25:22.340 Amen.
00:25:22.780 Bishop Joseph, thank you so much.
00:25:46.000 Amen.
00:25:46.580 Amen.

00:25:56.100 Amen.
00:25:56.220 Amen.
00:25:57.140 Amen.
