Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 1973, abortion has become a hot topic, sometimes as a means of avoiding the more fundamental issue of the right to life for every innocent unborn child. Pro-lifers are being persecuted and jailed for speaking the truth outside abortion centers all across Canada, and in the U.K., even silent prayer is illegal in some places. But what really is at stake here? This isn t just a legal battle, it s about defending the inherent dignity of every human being from conception to natural death.
00:02:20.620It's about defending the inherent dignity of every human being from conception to natural death.
00:02:26.660There are hundreds, in fact thousands, tens of thousands, who have never heard the full case for why abortion is wrong under all circumstances.
00:02:36.460And that's why we need to break it down.
00:02:38.780We need to break down the arguments for them.
00:02:41.460And one outstanding place that this has done is in a book called Abortion Matters, published by Philos Educational Publications,
00:02:49.020which has been really helpful in putting together this presentation for you.
00:02:52.300Let's start with the main arguments given in defense of the right to kill unborn children.
00:02:58.180It's helpful to lay out the opposing arguments clearly so that we can better see how flawed they are and how to refute them.
00:03:07.160Abortion advocates say abortion should be legal because a fetus supposedly isn't a human being.
00:03:14.880A woman has a right to autonomy over her body.
00:03:18.140A woman can't be forced to carry a baby against her will.
00:03:23.120Some family situations are unsuitable for children.
00:03:27.260Abortion is necessary for workplace equality between men and women.
00:03:32.280If abortion isn't legal, then women will seek dangerous backstreet abortions.
00:03:38.660So first of all, let's start at the beginning, conception.
00:03:42.200What is it that a woman is carrying within her when she is pregnant?
00:03:46.140A real human being or a clump of cells?
00:03:51.220Well, when a sperm reaches an ovum, it breaks up and its genetic contents are released into the ovum.
00:03:57.580At that moment, a new human being comes into existence, separate to his mother and his own existence and trajectory of development.
00:05:41.380Not for crimes, but for your lack of intrinsic worth.
00:05:46.340And the same goes for Africans in the slave trade.
00:05:49.260They were seen as not really human, but the slavery abolitionists were on the right side of history.
00:05:55.200And so are the abortion abolitionists.
00:05:58.880Why do scientists and embryologists say life begins at conception?
00:06:04.180Fertilization and conception are the moment in which cells from mom and dad stop being cells from mom and dad and start being the cells of another third thing.
00:06:15.980And this third thing is a new, living, and complete life in itself.
00:06:27.540Because if no one interferes with that tiny being, it develops in a clear, linear, predictable way.
00:06:35.080The cells all behave as parts of a whole.
00:06:38.460And a fertilized oven certainly doesn't behave as part of the mother.
00:06:43.500It's a complex organism whose parts work together in an organized, coordinated way, ordered toward its own development and not the development of the mother.
00:13:48.420They are replaced with this new little organism.
00:13:52.200The new fertilized cell then splits into two, then four, and so on.
00:13:56.960Over the next couple of days, this rapidly growing organism, called a blastocyst, moves its way along the fallopian tube until it reaches the womb,
00:14:07.120which has already started to get itself ready for the embryo.
00:14:11.160Once it's implanted itself on the wall of the uterus, normally between 6 to 12 days,
00:14:18.040the embryo sends out a message through mom's hormones, which will stop the next period from happening.
00:14:24.360The whole body knows a new independent life is already here.
00:14:30.220By about 3 to 4 weeks, a human embryonic child has a heart which beats.
00:14:36.120A head and body appear and arms and then legs start to form.
00:14:41.480A central nervous system appears, as do the digestive and respiratory tracts.
00:14:47.260The skin starts to form, as do the early forms of the muscles and bones.
00:14:50.820And all this in the first 4 weeks or so.
00:14:54.640Cancer cells don't start developing into a human body, nor do any other cells.
00:14:59.460It's never been the case that random sets of cells start forming themselves into humans of their own accord,
00:15:54.160And what he will need to be able to hear and balance is already in place there at that time.
00:16:00.140By about 8 weeks, the embryo will have grown about 4 centimeters and will have eyelids and eyes, lens, retina, and all that.
00:16:09.560By the end of 8 weeks, all the organs except the lungs are now actually working.
00:16:15.220We start to call an embryo fetus about 8 weeks.
00:16:18.740Even though we typically talk about a baby, and embryo and fetus have come to be associated with politically with those who want to justify abortion,
00:16:28.500embryo and fetus aren't bad words any more than senior is a bad word.
00:16:33.080The word fetus itself means offspring.
00:16:36.520And it just points to a stage in the person's life.
00:16:38.980By the end of the third month, or about 12 weeks as we normally put it, baby is now about 9 centimeters,
00:16:45.020making facial expressions, including smiling, sucking his thumb, moving about, and napping.
00:16:56.700I could tell you many more things about what comes later.
00:17:00.020Like how babies can hear and respond to sounds from 4 or 5 months from conception.
00:17:04.960Or how baby can survive outside the womb from around 22 weeks or so.
00:17:10.800And that's actually 20 weeks from conception, by the way.
00:17:15.080But I want to stay focused on 12 weeks right now because it's at that time when baby is showing all these typical signs of life
00:17:24.020and is very clearly its own independent little being that most abortions take place.
00:17:29.300Pope Pius XI said men must look for the peace of Christ in the kingdom of Christ.
00:17:36.860And he urged that the faithful give public honor to Christ the King so that individuals and states would submit once more to the rule of their Savior.
00:17:45.220And that is why LifeSite News is raising up the image of Christ the King across the United States.

00:18:02.540Most abortions take place in the first trimester.
00:18:06.22093% of abortions take place in the first 12 weeks or 3 months of pregnancy.
00:18:12.220Not so early before that, but around that time.
00:21:05.040While we need to be against abortion from day one, there is something to be said for those heartbeat bills.
00:21:10.100Those bans can have a real impact on the number of abortions and you can see it from the way the abortion lobby freaks out when you have these heartbeat abortion bill bans.
00:21:21.720But we can't negotiate with human lives.
00:21:25.740There's an argument that says we shouldn't be accepting abortions in some cases as a price for outlawing them in others.
00:21:32.880Would we be happy to see heartbeat bills?
