00:00:34.700 On March 16th, 1984, an inconspicuous man, disguised with a baseball hat and dark sunglasses,
00:00:57.240 waited by a payphone as police escorted an arrested suspect
00:01:02.580 through the Baton Rouge airport.
00:01:05.840 As the guards passed, the disguised man quickly turned
00:01:09.920 and fired a .38 caliber revolver at point-blank range into the suspect's head.
00:01:16.520 Even as the airport erupted into chaos,
00:01:20.220 one voice could be heard above the screams.
00:01:23.480 Why, Gary? Why?
00:01:27.240 Living in a split-custody home is never ideal for a young boy.
00:01:33.520 Much of the time, children are left fatherless, except on weekends, as was the case for father, Gary Plochet.
00:01:41.620 By all accounts, Gary was as good a father to his 10-year-old boy Jody as he could be,
00:01:47.100 but the boy was left without a father throughout the week.
00:01:51.240 Like many boys, Jody loved taking karate lessons each week.
00:01:55.620 In one class in 1983, Jody was introduced to his new instructor, Jeff Doshay.
00:02:03.180 Jeff became something of an authority figure in the boy's life.
00:02:07.400 He was involved in the family's day-to-day life and was well-liked by Jody's mother and father.
00:02:13.320 He helped whip the boy into shape and even helped Jody win a trophy at the Fort Worth Pro-Am tournament.
00:02:20.220 It's easy to see how Jeff became the young man's best friend and trusted mentor.
00:02:25.620 The karate instructor also came from a broken family,
00:02:29.860 which made it difficult for Jeff to create friendships,
00:02:33.320 and he was known as a loner.
00:02:35.500 Eventually, though, Jeff became interested in his pupil, Jody,
00:02:39.860 beginning to pay an inordinate amount of attention to the young Jody ploché.
00:02:45.020 One day, he offered to teach Jody how to drive a car.
00:02:48.040 Of course, any 10-year-old lad would leap at such an offer,
00:02:51.900 the opportunity to put a foot forward into the world of manhood and freedom.
00:02:55.620 But once Jody was perched on Jeff's knees, the then 10-year-old felt his karate teacher's hands
00:03:02.020 on his lap. Jody later recounted, I'm thinking, what's going on here? Maybe it's an accident?
00:03:09.380 So I didn't say anything. But now I know he was testing the boundaries. Textbook pedophilia.
00:03:15.520 They all test boundaries. The trusted instructor began victimizing the boy,
00:03:20.460 abuse that quickly escalated into daily and sometimes twice daily events.
00:03:26.600 The pedophile karate instructor continued this activity for almost a year.
00:03:31.980 None of this was known to Jody's mother and father.
00:03:34.980 When asked why Jody never told anyone, he said,
00:03:37.580 I think one of the things people don't really understand is why I didn't tell.
00:03:42.380 One, I was 10.
00:03:43.880 Two, what was happening I knew would upset my parents.
00:03:47.620 Three, at the time, I didn't want to get him in trouble.
00:03:50.460 It was easier for me to keep quiet and shut up than to upset everybody.
00:03:55.280 Things seemed likely to continue until the karate instructor tried to pass a few bad checks.
00:04:01.040 He was set to go to trial and decided to flee the charges.
00:04:05.320 Jeff swung by Jody's house and told the boy's mother he wanted to take him to his home to show the boy the carpet he was installing.
00:04:12.600 This was not unusual because of how ingrained the predator had become in the life of the boy and his family.
00:04:19.360 But Jeff didn't take the boy to see the work,
00:04:22.100 but instead abducted Jody and drove him from Louisiana to California.
00:04:27.500 Jeff Doshay changed his appearance.
00:04:29.760 He shaved his beard and dyed his hair blonde to appear to be the boy's father, 0.99
00:04:35.160 the entire time continuing to molest and rape the boy. 0.87
00:04:39.360 The boy's parents frantically searched for their missing son for 10 days.
00:04:44.120 The FBI traced a phone call from the boy to his mother
00:04:46.940 that led to the capture and arrest of the predator.
00:04:50.240 Jeff Doshay was charged with aggravated kidnapping
00:04:53.040 and was extradited back to Louisiana to face trial.
00:04:57.280 The boy's father, Gary, was wracked with guilt.
00:05:00.400 He had heard the news that his son had been molested.
00:05:03.740 He was distraught and he was not coping well.
00:05:06.660 His boy had been treated in the most heinous ways
00:05:09.340 and didn't know how to protect his son.
00:05:13.100 Gary was having a drink at the Cotton Club
00:05:14.940 trying to come with terms with the reality of his son's abduction and abuse
00:05:18.680 when the television above the bar caught his attention.
00:05:22.380 The local news had a special update
00:05:24.820 that Jody's abductor, Jeff Doshay,
00:05:27.500 would be arriving at the Baton Rouge airport that night at 9.08 p.m.
00:05:33.140 Gary immediately left the bar and drove to the airport.
00:05:36.740 He stood by the payphones and made a call to a friend
00:05:39.880 shortly before his son's kidnapper walked by.
00:05:43.800 Gary told his friend,
00:05:44.940 here he comes. You're about to hear a shot. As the police escort approached with the abuser in tow,
00:05:52.740 the father of the abused boy quickly turned, leveled his revolver, and fired a single .38
00:05:59.060 caliber round into Jeff Doshay's head. The airport, quiet a moment before, exploded into panic,
00:06:06.700 but the shocked voice of a police officer yelled above the fray,
00:06:10.320 Why, Gary? Why?
00:06:12.780 Gary responded,
00:06:14.140 If it had been your boy, you would have done it too.
00:06:17.180 Gary later pled no contest to manslaughter.
00:06:20.700 Judge Frank Sayah ruled that sending Plosche to prison would not help anyone.
00:06:26.180 Judge Sayah said that there was virtually no risk of him committing another crime.
00:06:31.460 Gary was sentenced to seven years suspended sentence,
00:06:34.480 five years parole, and 300 hours community service.
00:06:40.320 The King's Hall Podcast exists to make self-ruled men who rule well and win the world.
00:06:52.420 Well, welcome back, everybody, to the King's Hall Podcast. I'm Brian Sauve.
00:06:57.740 Joined here by my friends, Eric Kahn, Dan Burkholder. Gentlemen, say hi to the listeners.
00:07:02.800 It's good to have you guys with me today.
00:07:04.220 Hello. Thanks for being here.
00:07:05.940 It's good to be with you, Eric.
00:07:07.500 That was a bit presumptuous.
00:07:09.040 It's good to be with you.
00:07:10.320 Hey, uh, I'm at the head of the table. I actually, I know it looks like you think you're at the head
00:07:15.320 of the table. I'm actually at the head of the table. It's funny. I'm at the side of the table.
00:07:18.040 I'm interviewing everybody here. Ah, that's true. We all, you know what? In our hearts,
00:07:22.040 we're all at the head of the table. It's the King's hall podcast. Oh, well, welcome back
00:07:26.580 everybody to another episode, uh, in this season two, where we are discussing fatherhood, father
00:07:33.280 hunger, what the importance of fathers, the duties of fathers. And today we're specifically taking
00:07:39.280 up the duty of fathers to protect, to be protectors, to protect their children. And really, as we've
00:07:46.660 discussed at several other points in the season so far, fathers serving in churches, fathers
00:07:52.640 serving in city father roles, fathers everywhere really have a duty to protect. We're going to
00:07:59.840 discuss the scope of that protection, the nature of this duty, why it's important, what happens
00:08:05.920 when fathers fail in this duty and things along those lines. So first question, gentlemen, for
00:08:12.360 you, just want to talk about that duty of protection and talk about where it comes from.
00:08:17.540 How would you explain to a father that this actually is a core aspect of his duties? And
00:08:24.120 I know this might sound obvious, might sound like a dumb question. Well, of course, fathers 0.98
00:08:28.120 protect their children like that seems pretty dumb. But when we ask these kind of why questions, 0.97
00:08:32.540 I think it does help us to get to the heart of some of the principles underlying the duty.
00:08:38.400 So what would you say to that kind of question?
00:08:47.480 In 2023, Indigo Sundries became one of our sponsors.
00:08:51.000 At the time, their business was little more than a side hobby generating a couple hundred dollars a month.
00:08:55.580 But because of their partnership with us and because all of you chose to support them,
00:08:59.100 they've grown enough to make it their full-time livelihood.
00:09:01.020 This is what happens when Christians support Christians.
00:09:03.660 Our communities are strengthened and faithful businesses thrive.
00:09:06.480 So if you're a Christian business owner who wants to reach thousands of like-minded people
00:09:10.180 and grow your company, we'd love to partner with you.
00:09:12.900 Email us at advertising at newchristendompress.com.
00:09:20.840 Yeah, I would immediately just go somewhere like Genesis 2.15, right?
00:09:24.360 Man has this duty to work and to keep.
00:09:26.320 The keeping is protection.
00:09:28.500 And Brian, you know, you brought this up, but we think about it in our world that things like this are obvious.
00:09:34.420 But I think we've also found over and over again, it's the obvious things that can so easily be missed.
00:09:39.800 One of the things that we've been dealing with this week in the news is, of course, the Nashville church situation, the shooting, very tragic.
00:09:47.760 But I think, right, as church leaders, as fathers in the church, we're certainly seeing things like that.
00:09:52.920 And we're saying, okay, now I am in a very painful way reminded of this duty.
00:09:57.660 yeah to protect not only physically but then once you start down that path as i think we'll
00:10:02.640 discuss more in the show you also start to see ways that you know it's not necessarily a gunman
00:10:07.900 coming to the door but it's what's coming to your kids through the smartphone screen it's you know
00:10:12.600 what's coming through to your wife yeah what influences they have in your life are you winning
00:10:16.840 dan always brings this up and it's really helpful are you winning your kids hearts yeah so that is
00:10:21.820 really, I think a form of where I would start with protection. Yeah. You know, I think, you know,
00:10:27.440 one aspect of what you said, I hadn't even connected this dot, these dots when we were
00:10:31.560 talking through and preparing for this episode, but you're right that it's, it is usually the
00:10:37.680 obvious places where failure's happening. It's usually not out on the periphery and out on the
00:10:44.620 complex, difficult situations of life. Like most of the failures, most of the areas where destruction
00:10:50.380 is happening culturally in big picture ways and in small picture in a home, in a church,
00:10:55.780 it's usually obvious big central things that aren't happening where people would say, well,
00:11:00.660 you know, in a church where things are going poorly and where, you know, there's sin that's
00:11:05.120 dividing the church or where there's all sorts of issues. A lot of the time, what's happening is
00:11:09.260 that, you know, churchmen and pastors and leaders are probably failing in some very basic, very
00:11:15.300 elementary aspects of what it means to be a church father, a pastor. And we like to think
00:11:20.460 it's probably really complicated and difficult. And it's like, well, no, are you doing the obvious,
00:11:26.620 the things you think you know already? Are you doing those?
00:11:28.640 Well, and a lot of it is cliche. I mean, we're pastors, but this is a cliche thing about pastors.
00:11:34.240 A lot of cliches because they're true. It can be simple things like you have probably all been
00:11:39.300 there. You're giving counsel to somebody in a counseling meeting and you're like, well,
00:11:43.300 here's how you need to handle this.
00:11:44.760 And then you start thinking about it and you're like,
00:11:46.780 wow,
00:11:47.020 I need to like reapply some of these things in my own life.
00:11:50.480 So true.
00:11:51.120 And I would say that with our kids too.
00:11:52.740 It's like,
00:11:52.980 we're,
00:11:53.160 we're teaching.
00:11:54.020 And a lot of times you're spending all this time teaching other people,
00:11:57.040 but you need to focus on,
00:11:59.140 you know,
00:11:59.620 the people in your midst.
00:12:00.500 The other thing I would say in our communities,
00:12:02.860 local,
00:12:03.300 but also like social media,
00:12:05.100 I think there's just a lot of guys who are like worried about issues out
00:12:08.220 there on the screen.
00:12:09.580 Yeah.
00:12:10.300 And it's like,
00:12:11.040 yeah,
00:12:11.240 but you can't resolve the conflict in your marriage.
00:12:13.300 yeah, but what are your kids doing? Right. And I think that comes down to a core
00:12:16.860 responsibility is really the core of men. I mean, you're given a duty. You mentioned created order,
00:12:22.860 which the apostles and Christ go back to continually to Genesis, to created order.
00:12:28.520 And what is the job of the man and is to take responsibility. And so I won't go into too many
00:12:33.720 details, but you know, so when there's an intruder in the house in the night or something goes bump
00:12:38.580 in the night, it would be a coward who would elbow his wife and say, you better go check that out.
00:12:44.520 Right? Go check. You're abdicating your responsibility. The same thing would happen 0.97
00:12:49.280 if there's something that's infiltrating your home through entertainment, through social media,
00:12:53.620 or through the internet, that you then decide that you're going to abdicate and you're not
00:12:58.760 going to address that. You're going to let it continue to fester. Or even if you're completely
00:13:02.580 unaware, you're not tending the garden that God's given you. You're abdicating your responsibilities.
00:13:07.640 So at the core of what it means to be a man and a protector is to take responsibility for those that God has entrusted you to.
00:13:15.180 Yeah, and when you go back to that story, that's a great point.
00:13:17.320 You go back all the way to Genesis to that created order, and you see that the man is given this duty to work and keep.
00:13:24.080 And you see this later develop, and the priests in the tabernacle and temple are given the same duty.
00:13:28.980 They're to work and keep.
00:13:31.040 Essentially, you see that Adam is functioning as a sort of priest king.
00:13:34.100 there in the garden to protect and guard and do that duty within the house. And it makes you
00:13:39.400 understand something that I first heard put in this particular way from a guy on Facebook. He
00:13:45.840 does the family captain stuff, John Clark, John Michael Clark. He talked about things that only
00:13:51.520 you can do. Like there's these, as a father, you have to recognize there are certain aspects of
00:13:55.660 your duties that it's not just as if you don't do them, someone else has to. It's that if you don't
00:14:01.120 do them, nobody else even can. Nobody else can protect your children and your wife and your home
00:14:06.540 the same way that a father actually is able to. Nobody could protect and work and keep the garden
00:14:12.940 like the man could, like Adam could. And when he failed, it was a wholesale failure. There was
00:14:19.200 collapse and devastation that resulted. And so we really do have to start at this basic level
00:14:24.620 of recognizing not only that we have verses in the Bible that tell us that these are our duties.
00:14:30.620 I mean, Proverbs 24, 11, rescue those who are being taken away to death, hold back those who
00:14:37.560 are stumbling to the slaughter. We can go to the creation story. There are verses in the Bible that
00:14:42.240 would give us this, but even just innately and deeply wired into the nature of men, we find this
00:14:48.960 God-originated desire to save and protect and deliver and rescue and redeem and ransom, to
00:14:58.300 stand between evil and enemy or between you know enemies and your people this is just natural
00:15:05.700 theology would already teach us this well it was interesting uh i won't say who it was but it was
00:15:11.300 desiring god and john piper you know i love him for a lot of things but his article on defense
00:15:18.460 when he said that like you know he basically wouldn't defend his wife you can read the article
00:15:22.820 whatever uh but what was so interesting to me was the number of guys that were responding and
00:15:27.860 responded to me who were like, I hate this article with every fiber of my being. I can't
00:15:32.460 explain it. Yeah. But what kind of man would allow his wife to be attacked? Because he used verses.
00:15:38.140 Right. Because he used verses and it sounded, you know, pietistic and smart or whatever. But
00:15:41.660 I think what it comes to is when I'm looking at the spheres of a man's level of protection,
00:15:47.460 outer walls are physical defense. Like if you won't protect your wife physically,
00:15:52.140 why would you protect her spiritually? Right. Right. So outer wall is physical defense and
00:15:56.660 then inner walls are things like protecting her heart, protecting her mind, leading her in worship,
00:16:01.580 protecting her against false teaching and Beth Moore and some other, you know, things that would
00:16:06.640 be out there in this year. But you repeat yourself. But I repeat myself, false teachers, et cetera,
00:16:10.740 et cetera. So I think if you, if you start thinking about it like that and you say, we,
00:16:14.900 we definitely have that duty. Okay. And then the physical defense would be like, you lock your
00:16:20.780 doors, right? Okay. You think through, and this seems silly, but I'm even thinking through like
00:16:27.560 we're going through with the school shooting and then we're saying things like, well, are we
00:16:32.180 protecting our people? Yeah. Like, you know, are there solid doors or do we have protocols? Are
00:16:37.160 there locks? Are there basic protections? You just kind of have to start there and then work
00:16:42.440 inward to some of the more complex issues, I think. And even when you think about that cold
00:16:47.620 open. The story that Dan told there at the beginning about a father and his son and this
00:16:54.680 predator and his, you know, a lot of people I think will want to debate the morality in the
00:17:00.780 Romans 12, nine, don't take vengeance. Vengeance belongs to God. Like they want to debate the
00:17:04.480 morality. What are we saying here? Are we saying anytime some crime is committed, men go, go be a
00:17:09.580 vigilante. Well, the real point actually of that story, even deeply is, is just first to see a
00:17:17.500 living parable of what happens when a father feels like he's failed in his duty here. This is such a
00:17:24.240 primal responsibility and instinct that you can see that Gary, that father, I mean, you can go
00:17:30.640 there with him. Can you imagine being a father and you feel like I've failed? My son was, you know,
00:17:36.440 he was given over to a predator. I wasn't there for him. I didn't protect him. And the way that
00:17:40.700 that shame and that anger at the injustice rose up in his heart until the violent instinct to
00:17:49.680 just destroy his son's attacker overcame him. And I think a point before you even get to talking
00:17:56.480 about the ethics of men stepping up where the state fails to do its duty, even before you get
00:18:03.680 to that question, you just see in a story like that how primal this instinct is. Sin's corrupted,
00:18:11.740 sure, but every man on earth, even really wicked men, somewhere deep, they have this instinct
00:18:20.840 where they even recognize, I think, in their conscience, even if it's seared,
00:18:24.840 that they're acting absolutely contrary to nature, to the nature of masculinity,
00:18:28.960 to the nature of fatherhood, all these things.
00:18:32.460 Well, I think it's that question.
00:18:34.300 I think it's you read in the cold open, Dan,
00:18:36.280 but like where the detective, I guess,
00:18:38.460 says like if it was your son, you would have done it too.
00:18:41.120 That sort of comment.
00:18:42.480 But it gets at that innate natural desire to protect.
00:18:46.140 I also saw it this week with the way that,
00:18:48.060 especially a lot of men were sharing the body cam footage
00:18:50.900 of the cops taking out the shooter.
00:18:53.400 Yeah, the Covenant School.
00:18:54.820 Because I'll be honest with you guys.
00:18:56.120 when, you know, we had some connections with people there thinking about a pastor's daughter
00:19:01.500 being killed. I was actually really fighting back like intense rage. Yeah. Like I literally like I
00:19:09.480 want to kill somebody. And then you watch a video like that and you're like, good, good. You know, 0.88
00:19:15.200 there's something about the male soul. And so you even think about male movies where there's these
00:19:19.520 scenes of vengeance. And like in your heart, you find yourself saying, I, yes, I want this to
00:19:26.560 happen. And I think this gets backwards in our society, particularly this desire for protection
00:19:32.140 gets confounded. Like the wires are crossed because what will happen is, you know, like,
00:19:39.040 again, to use this situation, news media is like, well, actually the real victim here was this
00:19:43.480 trans girl. Or you'll hear it in court. There was a case. I want to say it was in Iowa where
00:19:50.640 this girl is like gang raped and killed. And her father, the first thing out of his mouth was, 0.97
00:19:55.260 well, you know, we need to forgive these guys. I'm sure they had messed up stuff going on in
00:19:58.720 their life. And that fatherly instinct is like, no, no, there should be justice. And that's not
00:20:06.900 it i it really i mean i i ring my soul rings true with with a lot of what you just said i had a
00:20:14.180 similar the night after the day that that shooting had happened at covenant school three little kids 0.65
00:20:21.740 nine-year-olds three teachers shot and killed clearly i mean any idiot could see targeted 0.99
00:20:29.920 because these are christians and this person hates christianity hates the lord i mean just 0.99
00:20:33.880 what it's obvious. I mean, I was up to well past midnight, just chewing it over my head, like
00:20:41.760 angry, sad, thinking about my own kids, thinking about our school, thinking about our church.
00:20:49.320 You know, I know the next morning we're all gathered around in the basement and we're talking,
00:20:52.760 okay, let's review. How are we doing? This is the duty of ours. And none of this, I don't want
00:20:57.280 anybody to take this as like that school is, is there that they screwed up. I know I'm not trying
00:21:03.480 to insinuate that at all, like, because evildoers do evil things. And, you know, what I'm not
00:21:08.240 blaming the school for, for the evildoer that came in and saying like, well, they, they should
00:21:11.620 have done X, Y, or Z, but it did. It led us to this. You, you reckon again with the reality of
00:21:18.760 your duty for protection. And so I guess let's get specific about this. When we're talking about
00:21:25.820 protection, that fathers are to be protectors, what kind of domains, like if we could get granular
00:21:33.160 and say, okay, well, here's this area of life that the father is to build walls around and guard.
00:21:40.120 And here's this area of life. And here's this area of life. Cause there are different
00:21:43.400 aspects. It's not mere physical protection. Let's talk about that. What kind of domains
00:21:48.940 are we talking about here? Yeah. I'll get to your question and I'm going to back up for just a
00:21:53.420 minute because one of the things that we realized when we were talking about our church security
00:21:58.060 and our school security and looking at like a covenant school was that if you are the
00:22:04.980 type of Christian, let's be honest, that listens to the King's Hall, you are going to be especially
00:22:10.340 hated. Oh, right. Like as far as the list of people that are likely to be attacked, 0.99
00:22:17.540 you're going to be high on it. Like you, your family, your church, your school,
00:22:23.100 you're going to be higher on the list. And so the fact is you have to be able to think
00:22:29.720 like the evildoer in a way. You have to be able to outcraft these wicked people.
00:22:38.080 And so one of the exercises, I mean, this seems obvious, but we're standing around talking about
00:22:43.000 church security, about school security. I'm thinking about my home security.
00:22:47.180 And you start thinking like, well, if I was to do the unthinkable, where would I go?
00:22:54.100 And the fact is you have to think that way.
00:22:57.060 You have to step outside yourself and you have to look around and say, where are the
00:23:01.080 weak spots in my defenses?
00:23:02.820 And so the different spheres that men are responsible for, I mean, the first sphere
00:23:08.500 is that outer ring of physical protection that Eric mentioned earlier.
00:23:13.000 I mean, that is the first realm of defense.
00:23:15.560 And the fact is, when you look at the responsibilities of men and at the duties that God has given us and equipping us to accomplish the mission of bringing his kingdom to earth, is that if you fail at this ring, you are a coward.
00:23:37.740 And like Eric said, you're going to fail at what, this is the obvious one.
00:23:41.700 Right.
00:23:42.160 It's like protection.
00:23:43.440 Yeah.
00:23:43.660 And if you abandon your family, if you abandon your church, if you abandon your school, if you abandon your community at this ring, what makes you think you're going to step up at any other time?
00:23:55.020 When that noise happens in the night, when I've had it happen, I live in a rural part of town.
00:24:03.000 It's called mini ranches or one acre ranches, which is laughable to anybody outside of Utah.
00:24:08.160 But anyway, I had somebody knocking on my door at 11 PM with face tattoos.
00:24:14.380 This was a little while ago.
00:24:16.160 And so-
00:24:17.040 Naturally, you sent your wife downstairs. 0.85
00:24:19.140 Naturally. 0.97
00:24:19.760 I said, Amelia, it's for you.
00:24:22.580 This person wants help with a face tattoo removal.
00:24:26.400 Yeah, yeah.
00:24:27.340 So, but this is the point where I think it's interesting to talk about like,
00:24:33.700 what is the most shameful thing a man can do?
00:24:36.160 I think one of the most shameful things a man can do is flee in battle, right? 0.57
00:24:40.060 Is to be a coward.
00:24:41.320 And this is the point in which it's tested.
00:24:43.660 is, is in the physical protection. If you're not willing to put yourself in the way of danger,
00:24:50.680 physical harm, it's going to be much more difficult when something happens to one of your
00:24:56.220 kids. Even if it's something like, not necessarily them being molested, like in our story,
00:25:01.500 which could happen unfortunately, but it was like a pornography comes into the home
00:25:06.980 or in entertainment or your wife,
00:25:11.160 like if your wife gets deceived by some false teacher,
00:25:16.160 that's going to take more courage in some ways
00:25:19.480 than just standing in front of the brute
00:25:21.900 that's outside your house trying to get in.
00:25:24.300 Yeah, yeah.
00:25:25.160 And I think too,
00:25:26.180 like one of the things I learned in the firearms industry
00:25:28.460 is you think about things like,
00:25:30.480 okay, is my house a hard or soft target?
00:25:33.680 Well, you can go online.
00:25:34.620 there's actually, I wrote articles for Mossberg. You can go to mossberg.com on home defense,
00:25:40.760 but there's like a whole list of things that you should be thinking through. And believe it or not,
00:25:46.280 for most people, it doesn't actually start with the firearm. It's things like how solid are your
00:25:50.480 door jams? Could somebody breach the door? What kind of locks? What kind of cameras? Do you have
00:25:56.020 a decrepit home with poor lighting? We were talking about this, Dan, but like if you have
00:26:00.980 visible cameras, it's well lit and there is, you know, signs of people are there. It's well
00:26:07.680 kept and et cetera. That's going to deter most people. Yep. So I think thinking through those
00:26:12.720 things, telling men, you need to be doing that. Like, don't wait till something bad happens.
00:26:18.280 You think about your wife, if she has, you know, like, you know, going to school or whatever,
00:26:22.920 when she's taking kids out, you know, is she safe? Is she trained? Does she know what to do
00:26:28.400 if something bad happens.
00:26:29.600 That's your responsibility
00:26:30.800 to make sure those things happen.
00:26:32.520 And it goes back to a few prerequisites.
00:26:34.500 Number one, don't divorce your wives 0.83
00:26:35.860 because if you do,
00:26:38.000 your kids are left unprotected.
00:26:40.060 That's just an obvious fact, right?
00:26:42.740 So you have to be present.
00:26:45.120 That's one.
00:26:45.760 Number two,
00:26:46.380 you have to actually be a physically strong man
00:26:48.480 who is trained and capable
00:26:49.940 of some sort of violence, right?
00:26:52.300 So like a lot of us would agree,
00:26:54.500 like, yeah, you should have
00:26:56.000 a personal defense firearm on your person.
00:26:58.040 you should have a strategy for your home. But there's a lot of stuff you got to think through.
00:27:01.880 As I went through all this, it's like, guys are like, oh no, I'm using buckshot in my house.
00:27:07.460 You know, buckshot is way worse than certain two, two, three rounds. It'll penetrate through like
00:27:12.200 three wallboards. So it's like, well, if you've got kids in a home, you need to think about those
00:27:17.120 things. So I think that would be my first thing is like, there's more to this. You don't know how
00:27:22.320 much you don't know until you start researching. Yeah. That's really interesting because we don't,
00:27:26.620 this is one of the concepts of working in retail is that i had uh our our loss department i can't
00:27:32.560 remember what they're called the people that catch prevention loss yeah prevention yeah loss
00:27:36.280 prevention they came up to to me one time and they're like hey we're giving a hundred dollar
00:27:40.640 reward to anybody you catch stealing and i was like do people actually steal and he's like yeah
00:27:46.540 like all the time all the time and he's like the problem with people that don't steal
00:27:51.440 is that you just assume nobody else steals.
00:27:54.740 Yeah.
00:27:55.220 And so in a way, you're really innocent to the idea
00:27:58.440 that evil people would do things like that.
00:28:00.840 I know that sounds really strange.
00:28:02.720 No, that's true.
00:28:03.220 But it's not just like, if somebody asks you like,
00:28:04.920 oh, do people shoplift?
00:28:05.980 And you're like, oh yeah, I'm sure people shoplift.
00:28:08.280 But when you're on the ground, you're like,
00:28:09.460 but they don't shoplift that much.
00:28:11.500 And then you start looking at the thousands of dollars
00:28:13.740 that this particular retail store was losing on a daily basis.
00:28:18.480 Realize that, no, all of these people are crooks.
00:28:21.120 And if you just open up your eyes, you're going to see it everywhere. Well, it's the same thing
00:28:25.280 with your home. I was looking at the YouTube the other day and there was a self-defense tip
00:28:30.760 and I looked at it. And one of the recent trends is to have, wait for like a door-to-door salesman
00:28:37.500 to follow around door-to-door salesman or have somebody dressed as a door-to-door salesman,
00:28:43.520 a solicitor. And then they have this innocent looking person in a polo and a name tag
00:28:48.340 and a clipboard, knock on your door. And then when you open the door, the, the bad guy rushes
00:28:55.020 the door, right. And breaches the home because then they don't have to break in. Like they have
00:29:00.240 an open door right there and they can overpower you. And so I guess the point is, is not like a,
00:29:05.600 you should be scared, but you have to be aware. And I would not have been aware of that.
00:29:11.380 There are door-to-door salesmen everywhere in Utah. I mean, with the Mormon thing and the
00:29:17.420 Mormon missionaries being used to knocking on doors. It must be the skillset that they have 0.72
00:29:21.040 because there are door-to-door salesmen everywhere. But it's something that I hadn't
00:29:24.380 really considered. And so there has to be a level of awareness in your preparation of
00:29:28.280 how these thieves actually work. Yeah, that's right. And, you know,
00:29:32.700 simple things like, you know, we've talked about like ring doorbells and stuff like that,
00:29:36.700 where you can track what's going on. That's helpful. The other side, we talked about homes,
00:29:41.160 but I would also say as pastors, fathers in the church, obviously that's something that you need
00:29:47.040 to have a security team. You need to think through them. I would just point guys, especially
00:29:50.980 to, if you're looking for training, places like Gunsite Academy in Arizona, I don't know
00:29:55.800 if they still do this, but they used to do like a free training for churches. So like
00:29:59.580 if you're, you know, Ken Campbell's there leading them, he's a Christian man. And he
00:30:04.180 said, look, we want to prepare these people as best we can. If you want training, call
00:30:08.500 us, hook it up. So all that to say, there's places where you can get training. You should,
00:30:13.500 You should have security teams and plans.
00:30:16.580 Over on Breit Hearth, November of, I think it was November.
00:30:20.440 Let me see.
00:30:21.680 Season one, we did an episode called Protecting the Home.
00:30:25.100 Josh Adams.
00:30:25.720 With Josh Adams.
00:30:26.720 He's a Marine in our church.
00:30:28.760 Great.
00:30:29.180 Hour and a half episode.
00:30:29.980 One of our most popular episodes of all time.
00:30:32.060 Very practical.
00:30:33.120 An hour and a half look at, including in the description, there's like a list of a bunch
00:30:36.880 of stuff that he says, do this for your doors, do this for your, it's very practical.
00:30:41.900 all the way down to like, to the point where people love to think about the gun scenario
00:30:47.140 and then they have no way of putting a fire out on their stove or like carbon monoxide.
00:30:53.020 So, I mean, it's very practical stuff when you think about this first ring of physical
00:30:57.380 defense.
00:30:58.320 Yeah.
00:30:58.620 And even-
00:30:59.080 I have used more fire extinguishers in my home than firearms.
00:31:01.740 Yeah, by a lot.
00:31:02.600 Yes.
00:31:03.160 Well, just by one.
00:31:04.480 Also, there's a lot of, you know, small steps to deterrent.
00:31:08.280 So one of the things I keep on by nightstand is actually my car keys because the front door is by the cars.
00:31:13.460 So if somebody's giving you trouble or in your driveway, you see them on the cameras, just hit the panic button on your car.
00:31:19.820 That probably is going to deter a lot of people.
00:31:21.780 So there's a lot of steps like that that are fortunately much less legally hassle-some, if that's a word, than discharging a firearm.
00:31:30.300 That's like last resort stuff.
00:31:32.520 Defensive depth, thinking ahead, that hard target type of thing.
00:31:36.680 Brian, that's really interesting.
00:31:37.960 I hadn't really considered, so I'm just thinking about outside threats because most of what we're
00:31:42.440 going to talk about is like false teachers, people coming in, you know, pornography, predators,
00:31:48.300 things like that. But, you know, one of the failures that I had at my home was that I was
00:31:53.040 replacing the screens in my windows and my two-year-old boy fell out of the window and we
00:31:58.500 had to take him down to the children's hospital in Salt Lake. And it was pretty bad. He had a
00:32:03.300 skull fracture. Praise God he's back to normal. No personality changes or anything like that,
00:32:08.080 but he was severely concussed. And I just share that kind of like a shameful failure on my part
00:32:18.720 is to encourage you guys. I've got sliding windows, so that means when the kids stand up
00:32:23.660 on the window ledge, they have full toe-to-head screen open window. And I have a half basement,
00:32:30.900 So it was like an eight foot drop or so.
00:32:33.760 And so it's just to encourage you guys.
00:32:36.120 There are things like security screens.
00:32:39.040 Actually, Joshua Adams, who was on your BrightHearth podcast,
00:32:42.180 I went over to his house and he has a screen door.
00:32:45.760 I don't know if you'd like me sharing his home defense layout,
00:32:49.340 but he has a screen door that is impenetrable.
00:32:53.680 He literally stabbed it with a knife in front of me and it did nothing.
00:32:58.500 Yeah, he's like, this thing, you can't even batter it down.
00:33:00.900 It's like more secure than my door.
00:33:02.800 Anyway, so there are products like that that exist.
00:33:06.220 But some of these things are, I guess they're obvious in hindsight, you know, but at the
00:33:11.320 time it was like, no, it's cool in the morning.
00:33:13.200 I'm going to open the windows and my child fell out the window.
00:33:16.200 And so there are other physical protection things that you have to have in mind.
00:33:20.700 The fire extinguishers are actually really important because I almost burned my house
00:33:25.000 down as well.
00:33:26.100 Boy, this is not looking good for me this episode.
00:33:28.860 No, I was removing some carpet adhesive in the basement and I neglected to turn off the pilot
00:33:35.860 light in my water heater and it ignited the fumes of the chemicals that I was using and lit my entire
00:33:41.080 basement on fire. It got very, very hot. And I just screamed upstairs, Amelia, call the fire
00:33:48.000 department. And thankfully she didn't go, why? What's up? She's just like, okay, it must be
00:33:54.960 serious. She's like, he probably wouldn't say that if he didn't mean it. Yeah. But thankfully
00:33:58.740 I had bought a home that was previously owned by a firefighter. And I looked around, I'm like,
00:34:05.080 why are there so many fire extinguishers in this house? They're like six on the three levels of
00:34:09.560 my home. And then I'm like, praise God for the firefighter trying to put out the fire in my
00:34:15.200 house. It was fine. It was fine. We're okay. Yeah. And I think, Brian, it's a good transition
00:34:20.540 as we look at some of these other ones. But fundamentally, the key watchword here is
00:34:24.220 watchfulness like it's it's proactivity yeah you have to be a that's one of your duties um it's
00:34:30.400 also interesting brian you've been preaching on nehemiah and i've been thinking a lot about this
00:34:35.120 this this concept of building which we're doing yeah uh and it seems like every reformed baptist
00:34:40.200 church loves this image of the sword and the trowel i don't know why i love it too it resonates
00:34:44.220 with the reformed baptist soul yes that's what it is yeah so we have to build but but there's also
00:34:49.460 this element that we have to stand watch on the walls and protect well you know what eric it's
00:34:53.180 good it's good you say it just real quick i know you're going somewhere but i think it's funny
00:34:57.360 because a lot of times reformed presbyterians can tend to fail at the guarding and watching
00:35:00.980 and i wonder if the reformed baptists saw that and they were like you know what you got to watch
00:35:06.320 the walls you can't just build glorious seminaries and institutions you have to guard them i appreciate
00:35:10.680 your charity i'm shouting out i don't know but i don't know if they're that strategic maybe not
00:35:15.560 and you know what a lot of a lot of sbc seminaries aren't doing that well either anyway keep going
00:35:19.900 yeah but but i think even when you look at institutions it goes back to something you
00:35:24.080 said in one of the sermons i think it's aragorn at the pelennor fields but he says what good
00:35:29.300 are walls if there are not men to defend them and so like for us in this episode we're saying well
00:35:34.620 like you have to have a strong defense but it takes you being watchful yeah in order to to do
00:35:40.600 that agree yeah he's aragorn specifically says men are better than gates because they're lamenting
00:35:47.080 the fact that the orcs tore the gate down into ministerith and and he's they're saying well
00:35:53.540 we're gonna what are we gonna do we can't build another gate he said men are better than gates
00:35:57.160 anyway and that point is and then after that sermon joshua adams actually said the marines
00:36:01.880 actually have a rule that you can't call it defended unless a marine is defending it interesting
00:36:07.960 you can call it a fortification you can call it something else an obstacle but you can't call
00:36:11.940 something a defense unless a marine is defending it because i mean a gate even the best gate on
00:36:16.780 earth if it's left unattended someone will get through so a determined like the best safe on
00:36:21.940 earth a determined person will get in it if they like you have to be watchful you have to be you
00:36:27.980 have to have eyes on the points of attack yeah i think that that that's a really good point it
00:36:33.740 kind of ties in too with sexual protection yeah so one of the things i've seen a lot of is you
00:36:39.540 know and i've even experienced this in my own life where you're just like surely there can't be that
00:36:44.700 many ways for like sexual immorality to get into a household these days. If you're a Christian and
00:36:50.100 you catechize and all these things, the reality is it is literally everywhere. I mean, it could
00:36:56.240 be on Disney. It could be on- Your smart toaster. Your smart toaster. I mean, I'm sure. There's
00:37:02.860 literally a million ways. And so I think what it is, is, you know, look, when I was a kid,
00:37:08.520 it was really simple. Like you had to go somewhere to buy something, you know,
00:37:12.600 pornographic magazine or something that was inappropriate.
00:37:15.340 Almost no one did it because that was so shameful to do.
00:37:17.980 But then introduced the smartphone.
00:37:22.240 And then it's at fingertips.
00:37:23.840 It's everywhere.
00:37:25.420 I mean, even, Brian, we've experienced this on social media.
00:37:29.240 Oh, yeah.
00:37:30.260 When you posted things about modesty,
00:37:32.260 I actually, until that point, wasn't aware
00:37:34.120 how actually vile some of this stuff is and can't be.
00:37:39.020 So all that to say is fathers
00:37:40.780 What kind of role do you have to have in
00:37:44.380 Protecting your family from that known threat dan you were talking about you need to know what the threat is
00:37:49.980 You need to think like a wicked person 0.91
00:37:52.000 Well on sexual issues. How do you think about that issue? Yeah, yeah, that's that's a really good question 0.98
00:37:57.640 Boy, I was gonna I was gonna share another story with my life personally about outside attackers
00:38:02.560 But I think i'll keep that one at bay
00:38:04.040 But there are neighbors in my neighborhood that i'm like teenage boys
00:38:07.900 that I'm now like, because of certain acts that are really strange, like on high alert with my
00:38:16.220 kids, you know, because teenage boys that go to public school and that have unfettered access to
00:38:23.020 smartphones and to the internet. Not good. No, that is not good. So one of the things I think
00:38:28.760 you have to think through in our story today, Jeff, who is the man who abducted the karate
00:38:34.980 teacher yeah the karate teacher was he was a teacher he was yeah yeah yeah his pronouns are
00:38:41.320 now we're was we're was yep so he was molested as a boy he was also molested as a boy and then
00:38:49.180 he continued that activity obviously into adulthood but the thing is these the way these
00:38:55.200 predators operate and it's interesting that jody the boy who was molested he he said he quote i
00:39:02.180 quoted him. He said that these predators, pedophiles always test boundaries. They're
00:39:08.140 always seeing how far they can get, how much trust they can get. They're very, very crafty,
00:39:14.300 these guys. And so one of the things he had mentioned, Jody, the boy, is that if somebody
00:39:20.460 is taking more interest in your children than you are, that's a huge red flag. That's a huge
00:39:26.520 red flag. And so I think one of the strategies is to not be very trusting. You know, any good
00:39:34.380 leader has an amount of skepticism towards everything. That means entertainment that
00:39:41.840 comes into the house. I shared this offline. Something as simple as my boys are watching
00:39:47.820 Daniel Tiger. Yeah. Okay. Dunk on me, whatever. Daniel Tiger animated show. And they're talking
00:39:53.920 about how you trust doctors no matter what and to take the shots and it's going to be okay. And
00:39:58.680 I'm like, oh, boys, I just want you to know that this is a lie. Do you not believe a single thing
00:40:03.520 these people say? Dan goes on a three-hour antibiotics rant. My boys are just wide-eyed
00:40:07.160 looking at me. Do you guys want to see blood clots? Do it again, daddy. So anyway, the point
00:40:12.640 is that you have to have a healthy amount of skepticism towards everything because it doesn't 0.93
00:40:18.220 take a conspiracy theorist to look at Disney and go, wait a minute, they're full of pedophiles. 0.99
00:40:23.040 Oh, Hollywood, full of pedophiles. 1.00
00:40:25.380 The government, full of pedophiles. 1.00
00:40:27.920 Pedophiles are everywhere. 1.00
00:40:29.240 And they're after your kids.
00:40:31.880 They're not just after your kids and like, I'm going to abduct them, you know, but they're after the hearts of your children. 0.98
00:40:38.880 And they want to capture them by sneaking in sexual promiscuity and images and trying to enslave them to their death cult.
00:40:48.100 They want to make a world where it's easier for all of their perversions to flourish under the noonday sun and not have to creep around in the back alley, in the back room. 0.56
00:40:57.760 This is why the push to normalize pedophilia with MAP, minor attracted persons, you have to understand. 0.52
00:41:05.660 To celebrate it too, not just accept it.
00:41:07.020 They want it to come into the light and then celebrate it and then force you to celebrate it.
00:41:11.160 That's the last step.
00:41:12.220 And the goal is that they would be able to just practice their perversions freely because they've discipled the world to revel in their perversions.
00:41:23.600 It's like at this point, like you mentioned teenagers, it's sad, but I basically assume that anybody 12 and over is using pornography, boy or girl.
00:41:35.040 I pretty much have that as an assumption now, like in our neighborhood with kids playing with our kids.
00:41:40.840 you know, because it's now, now, like you said, it's not go somewhere. It's my kids could be in
00:41:44.740 my own backyard and neighborhood kids come over and they have their phone or their Kindle or
00:41:47.720 whatever it is. And all of a sudden my kids are being exposed, not only to the material,
00:41:52.340 but to the other, to this person without impulse control, who's also been exposed to the material.
00:41:57.800 And so now they have a 12, 13 year old, a lot of, um, a lot of predators are actually
00:42:03.900 young teenagers. Yeah. And I think it's also important to emphasize that it should be the
00:42:09.300 father, that is the one that's leading the charge in this, in sexual protection. Because one thing
00:42:15.920 I've noticed is that because women aren't wired in the same way as men, where guys think about 0.85
00:42:22.760 sex a lot, and most women don't think about sex as much, is that there's, back to my theft 0.53
00:42:30.840 shoplifting example, is that if you're not thinking that way, you won't think that way,
00:42:36.600 right? If you don't think about sex all the time and understand the power of the enslavement of
00:42:43.920 pornography and of sexual lust, then you won't think that way. And so there's a lot of, I would
00:42:50.740 say there would be, tend to be more ignorance from your wife than maybe, maybe from you, the 0.82
00:42:56.700 husband. Yeah. One of the books I would recommend on this front for people is Gavin DeBecker's book, 0.87
00:43:02.440 which is titled the gift of fear so in this book he talks a lot about how in these situations
00:43:08.580 whether it's as a kid as a as a woman he'll tell stories of people who got raped and stuff like
00:43:13.880 that and there was always stuff early on where they felt really awkward and like this should end
00:43:18.820 i should tell this person to leave i shouldn't be in this situation i should flee but what would
00:43:25.120 happen is it's like this pressure and this shame of like well no i'm you talk yourself out of it
00:43:31.340 And so one of the things that's helpful with this book and I would say to parents
00:43:34.940 It's really helpful to look at if the situation makes you uncomfortable
00:43:38.760 It's uncomfortable
00:43:40.700 You trust that instinct and you say no
00:43:43.480 You know if if your kid's hanging out with somebody I i've had this multiple times
00:43:47.480 Um, where you're you're they're hanging out with people and you kind of get a weird feeling 0.98
00:43:51.540 You're like no, I don't want to be the jerk who you know upsets that family whatever 0.98
00:43:55.740 and then 1.00
00:43:57.400 come to find out you know the kids looking at porn you know dad tells you about the problem
00:44:01.640 and then immediately you're going well let's let's be real for a minute about pornography
00:44:05.680 it's teaching them how to do absurdly crazy things yeah so i don't want my kids exposed to that
00:44:14.260 so if if those kids are around my kids like i will straight especially as they've gotten older
00:44:19.400 i will have a talk with my kids i mean like look their parents allow them to have unfettered access
00:44:23.420 to a phone that's heinous here's pornography's on there it's bad it'll destroy your soul mom and
00:44:29.880 dad aren't okay with that i don't care if they hate us like you have to get over that fear of
00:44:35.840 what people think of you yep and say absolutely not here are rules i remember years ago tim
00:44:41.500 chally's even had this where he was like we don't do sleepovers and a lot of people were like oh
00:44:46.760 that why not that's what people in our culture do well especially as kids get older it's like
00:44:52.120 all sorts of bad things can and do happen when you have kids asleep in dark places together
00:44:59.000 and as a parent a lot of times you can think oh man this makes me uncomfortable i'm not going to
00:45:02.560 do anything the reality is i think what i'm saying is you you should trust that instinct
00:45:07.740 cultivate that instinct and protect your kids yeah yeah this this area of protection is one
00:45:14.260 that proactivity level is turned to 11 it should be turned to 11 because a lot of physical threats
00:45:22.020 can be more obvious
00:45:23.840 and they're visible
00:45:24.680 and you're thinking about
00:45:25.640 Well, the frequency
00:45:26.520 is lower.
00:45:28.800 It's low.
00:45:29.540 And even just thinking about
00:45:30.840 choking and fire protection
00:45:32.720 and firearms
00:45:33.520 and home defense
00:45:34.520 and church defense,
00:45:35.640 a lot of that's pretty straightforward.
00:45:37.200 Like someone wants to come
00:45:37.840 physically harm my child
00:45:39.340 or something's going to
00:45:40.100 physically harm my child.
00:45:41.420 Well, this sexual protection element, 0.75
00:45:44.260 it's so much sneakier.
00:45:46.720 So much more beneath the surface.
00:45:48.360 The people that are going to come
00:45:49.240 and attempt to actively
00:45:50.060 destroy your children, 0.98
00:45:51.480 Man, they're wily. 0.97
00:45:52.980 I'm even thinking about, like you guys have been, you've mentioned,
00:45:56.100 just the people who are making this content,
00:45:59.580 their whole goal is to use it as an enslaving,
00:46:04.980 whether it's just to make money off of them or even more nefarious reasons,
00:46:09.240 their whole goal is to be sneaky.
00:46:11.720 Their whole goal is to get past your defenses.
00:46:14.340 It's to get in there behind the walls.
00:46:17.080 so fathers have to just be so vigilant today that it's like i can't think of another time
00:46:24.780 in history that's even close to analogous yeah and i think brian one of the other parts of it is
00:46:30.460 you know david's failure was allowing his own son absalom to steal the hearts of the young men
00:46:37.880 and so again to dan's points we have to be so protective like who has your kids hard
00:46:43.980 Yeah.
00:46:44.680 And one of the things I thought of today, and I'm willing to call it out because I think it should be called out.
00:46:49.700 So you've got the Manosphere.
00:46:51.000 You've got Anthony Dream Johnson.
00:46:53.120 Today there's a tweet.
00:46:54.080 Jesus Christ was the Anthony Fauci of his day.
00:46:56.860 He said, I'm God.
00:46:57.660 I am science, blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:46:58.900 Here's the deal.
00:46:59.800 There's a lot of people who play nice with this stuff. 0.98
00:47:02.880 This is absolutely disgusting, wicked, vile.
00:47:06.640 I want to protect my kids against people like Anthony Johnson. 0.81
00:47:11.600 This content is—
00:47:12.840 naming names today. It is so deceptive. Eric is on this podcast for a reason. For this reason.
00:47:18.300 He's the hammer. He's the hammer in a room of hammers. In a room of hammers. But I think this
00:47:23.340 is so important because I want to be able to say to my kids just straight up, like, hey,
00:47:27.240 if you're exposed, they're not at this point, thank God. But if you're exposed to Twitter,
00:47:31.900 one day you might have a smartphone, you might be on here. Here's the type of people that are on
00:47:35.280 here. Let me tell you about this guy. There's a lot of helpful stuff that might be good, but
00:47:39.640 these guys are sexual deviants like the the stuff that's going on in the manosphere about pickup 0.77
00:47:44.920 artist and game and all this stuff body counts body counts it's like okay well these are the 0.97
00:47:50.000 things we need to be aware of it's going to be appealing to sons who maybe go out in the world
00:47:55.080 and are you know disaffected by what they find in the female you know dating scene and you need to
00:48:00.600 be prepared and this is what i would say to dads too frank conversations with your kids yeah i mean
00:48:06.900 just as bluntly frank as possible about these issues maybe we get into some of it in the after
00:48:12.860 hours but you have to have very practical proverbial solomonic conversations well with
00:48:19.560 your kids you see that person that's bad do you want to be like that no because part of it is that
00:48:23.700 part of sexual protection is also teaching your young men your boys to not become evil sexual 0.91
00:48:31.200 predators. They're in the sinful heart of every man. There is a twisted, there's a reality that
00:48:38.980 their soul can be twisted by the world, the flesh, and the devil until they become, from pastor's 0.96
00:48:45.900 homes, from homes that love to focus on the family stuff, they can become twisted sexual predators
00:48:52.580 because the sin is in their heart. I mean, the evil desire lives in the heart of man.
00:48:58.160 so we need to be you're right we need to be telling our sons like look part of the hook here
00:49:02.520 and things like the manosphere is men who are noticing certain things that are actually terrible
00:49:08.680 and bad and they're diagnosing some problems they're like hey you know here's problems with
00:49:13.680 gynocentricity and things and then so they use that and then they say so here's the answer and
00:49:18.660 let me disciple you and at the end of the day even even the guys when you're looking at the
00:49:23.300 secular manosphere, even the guys who like, Anthony's always talking about drifters or
00:49:28.080 drifters, grifters, trying to call it grifters. Those Tokyo drifts. I was thinking like Tokyo 0.96
00:49:35.200 drift. Even, even in that world, it's like, but you're talking to a guy who's boasted of sleeping
00:49:42.200 with a hundred plus women. You are the grifter. Like you don't know your left hand from your 1.00
00:49:47.800 right hand. It's a bunch of Ninevites trying to teach you. Yeah. And so the other side of that 1.00
00:49:52.020 is to take Solomon's warning to his sons
00:49:56.040 to not go after the woman that is on the street corner,
00:50:00.600 the woman that's calling from her house, 0.71
00:50:02.100 because there are going to be women 1.00
00:50:03.700 that will try to enslave your sons 1.00
00:50:05.460 that will be a form of sexual predator themselves. 0.98
00:50:08.560 Absolutely.
00:50:09.060 So one of the things that you can do proactively
00:50:10.680 is to, well, first of all, disciple your daughters
00:50:13.780 to protect them from sexual promiscuity,
00:50:16.100 all of the things that we've said about your sons,
00:50:18.200 to not expose them to things like that.
00:50:20.080 you have to be hyper vigilant with your daughters because they're obviously going to be a target
00:50:24.700 from predators and things like that. And you also have like the curse of beauty. So especially so
00:50:31.240 if she's really pretty, but then you also want to warn your sons against the worthless woman, 1.00
00:50:36.840 against the woman with honey from her lips that will try to entice your boys because that is 0.98
00:50:44.080 very enticing. I've gone to college. I've been to a bar. I know, believe it or not, Baptists,
00:50:50.940 I have been to a bar and those places are full of that type of woman and they will ensnare you 1.00
00:50:57.000 and capture you. And so one of the ways that you can be really proactive in the sexual protection 1.00
00:51:02.860 of your son is to describe and to disciple him and to win his heart towards the idea
00:51:08.300 of what a godly woman looks like. You know, just thinking back through my childhood
00:51:13.060 in, you know, taking inventory of, of the, the girls that I knew. And as I look at my boys and
00:51:21.240 they're growing up and what sort of, you know, daughter-in-law would I like to have and what
00:51:26.460 type of wife would I like them to have? And I'm doing inventory of the, you know, in my past and
00:51:31.660 I'm looking, I'm like, that girl, uh, these girls, these types of girls were, should have been the
00:51:37.720 type that I was attracted to. And I wasn't, um, for one reason or another, but the, my, my whole
00:51:44.620 point is to train the affections of the hearts of your sons to be attracted to the right thing and
00:51:49.080 not to the wrong thing. Yeah. Yeah. And, and Dan, I think part of that too is again, like dads are
00:51:55.600 asking, okay, but how do I practically do that? And again, I would say presence, be present with
00:52:00.440 your kids, spend a lot of quality time, but have lots of conversations, have open, honest, frank
00:52:06.140 conversations. We use, you know, if, you know, you meet a girl, it's like, okay, what are some
00:52:13.400 of the issues here? Here's what you guard against. Yeah. Here's the way that you approach this 0.95
00:52:17.160 relationship. Here's the, I talk to my kids specifically about what, what types of conversations
00:52:23.320 should you have with girls? What would be a conversation you shouldn't have? If you ever 0.90
00:52:27.800 feel uncomfortable, here's what you should do. You know, here's how to make her feel comfortable.
00:52:32.360 You walk through some of those things and you realize, well, that means I've got to pay attention to who my kids' friends are.
00:52:38.840 I need to be on the watch all the time.
00:52:40.760 Who are they interacting with?
00:52:42.480 What are they doing with their free time?
00:52:44.240 Are they being productive in those hours?
00:52:47.020 Again, that's on you as a dad.
00:52:48.920 Don't assume somebody else will do that, especially not your wife.
00:52:51.740 And Eric, another aspect of this that's so important, and it actually leads to a pretty
00:52:57.280 hard call that some fathers are going to have to make, is that you really do need your children
00:53:01.480 to be around lots of godly men and women. And so they have these models before them,
00:53:07.440 and they understand the difference because they can see it. They look at the women in your church
00:53:11.360 and they should be able to see, wow, look, these are chaste, feminine, beautiful, godly women,
00:53:17.140 gentle and quiet spirit, respect their husbands. That shouldn't be one in a thousand in your
00:53:21.940 community. And the same with the men, masculine, godly, proactive men. And some fathers are going
00:53:28.700 to have to make this call where they realize, okay, my kids are coming, maybe they're six,
00:53:33.440 seven, eight, nine right now. And you're thinking, well, this is far off, whatever. You might need
00:53:37.920 to make the call right now that you're in a place where that's not even possible. Your church,
00:53:41.900 your region, you might actually have to move so that you have the time for your children to
00:53:47.400 actually grow up in a community. And I don't mean it has to be perfect or huge, but is it there?
00:53:52.920 Do they have the models there? I've counseled some men. Again, we don't tell everybody to up
00:53:58.400 and move to one of the, you know, like the two or three churches in America that everybody wants to
00:54:01.480 move to. Don't necessarily do that, but you should be thinking, man, am I in a place? I've talked to
00:54:06.240 lots of guys. They're in a place where it is actually impossible. There are no churches for
00:54:10.240 them to go to. And some of them, I'm like, look, move. Think about it. Yeah. I would say having
00:54:16.220 gone through it, like spending maybe like five years in situations that weren't great, having
00:54:21.200 all the same. So like when we get those comments from people, I've felt and lived through every one
00:54:27.220 of those feelings. Yep. Right. So from experience, I'm saying this. One of the turning points for why
00:54:32.880 I moved to Ogden, Dan said to me at one point, not taking a risk is taking a risk. Yeah. And
00:54:39.180 you're risking your family and you're risking all those things. And the more I thought about it,
00:54:43.300 it just hit me that no matter what it costs, I need to put first priorities first. As you're
00:54:49.020 saying, be around godly people. I can also say after being here for over a year, that as Dan
00:54:55.320 told me would be the case, I wish I had done it sooner. And I would go back even and kind of
00:55:01.340 double down and say like, I don't care what it costs. You cannot overestimate the value of being
00:55:07.440 around godly people. I mean, even for, for my boys, right. To, to be bound, even older women,
00:55:12.720 they're, you know, like your wives and where they can look and they can say, this is what a godly 1.00
00:55:17.240 wife looks like. How many churches that I've been a part of where you look at the elders wives and
00:55:21.540 they're like the cattiest, most gossipy, slanderous women you've ever met in your life. The problem 0.99
00:55:26.100 is you tend to long for and desire ultimately what you're used to. So if you're used to that
00:55:34.000 kind of woman, that's probably what you'll fall into. Well, I think in our church, there's such 0.73
00:55:38.640 a sweet example of what godly femininity looks like that if nothing else, I can say my boys have
00:55:44.400 seen it. They've seen it modeled. Even the young girls, you notice in dress, attire, mannerisms, 0.99
00:55:51.300 because of our women, we never like sat the young ladies down and be like, here's what you need to
00:55:55.840 do. But all of a sudden you see women dressing differently, carrying themselves differently, 0.92
00:56:00.940 acting with more decorum. 0.62
00:56:03.080 Nobody had that conversation even.
00:56:04.640 And you can see the seasoning over time
00:56:06.220 as people integrate into the community.
00:56:08.580 Often sheer example alone.
00:56:10.600 Yes.
00:56:10.860 No one told them.
00:56:12.140 And you can just see it.
00:56:13.140 I mean, you could take a snapshot
00:56:14.600 at one month, a year, two years,
00:56:17.480 and it's not Stepford Wife stuff. 0.94
00:56:19.380 It's just the seasoning of a godly community.
00:56:22.600 This is, these are the aspects of proactivity
00:56:25.260 and fathers serving as protectors
00:56:27.060 that are absolutely underrated
00:56:29.220 because we often want to jump to the reactive things.
00:56:33.300 Well, and I think that's a big thing is you saw the reaction,
00:56:36.400 because this actually was on social media, the Gary Plochet thing.
00:56:39.860 Yeah.
00:56:40.240 You saw the reaction where dudes were like, yeah, go get them.
00:56:43.100 There was all these like positive responses, you know,
00:56:46.280 be the change you want to see.
00:56:47.780 And we laugh and we're like, yeah, I get that.
00:56:50.180 I understand the sentiment.
00:56:51.900 But at the same time, it's actually much more important
00:56:54.180 that we take proactive measures.
00:56:56.360 Yeah.
00:56:56.580 What if he hadn't been in a broken home?
00:56:58.780 Right.
00:56:58.980 So it's like, you know, Gary, the dad, right?
00:57:03.040 He had divorced his wife.
00:57:04.820 Yep.
00:57:05.160 So the son's living apart from his father.
00:57:07.620 They were really happy that this 20-some-year-old karate teacher was being so active in his life
00:57:13.140 and was like an authority figure and like a father figure in the absence of his dad.
00:57:17.820 Yeah, absolutely.
00:57:19.280 I mean, one of the things that I think is really important to circle back to,
00:57:23.780 you talked about the dress of the ladies in our church
00:57:27.180 just the way they present themselves
00:57:28.520 and things like that.
00:57:29.580 That was not because of manipulation.
00:57:31.800 No, no.
00:57:32.420 So when you say we didn't talk to them,
00:57:33.860 it wasn't like, well, shame,
00:57:36.640 like the silent shame treatment.
00:57:38.760 No, what it was was you win their heart
00:57:42.180 to a certain standard of beauty and of righteousness
00:57:45.940 and just of culture.
00:57:48.260 But in the same way,
00:57:49.420 in the situation with the karate teacher and stuff,
00:57:52.440 if Gary, the boy's dad had won his heart
00:57:55.780 and was involved and was an authority figure,
00:57:58.560 there's no space for karate teacher pedophile. 0.86
00:58:01.140 No. 0.99
00:58:01.560 No, there's no room for him.
00:58:03.100 He picks a different boy.
00:58:04.220 No room.
00:58:05.000 Ren, Ryag Nationalist talks about this. 0.99
00:58:06.920 He's like, look, the left is all about being gross and disgusting. 0.97
00:58:10.580 So really, as Christians, we ought to have a monopoly on beauty. 0.98
00:58:14.680 Yeah.
00:58:15.120 And so that's where I was going, Dan, with the ladies.
00:58:17.860 We never had to have a cultish, hyper-controlling conversation 0.51
00:58:23.420 where all ladies will dress this way. 0.76
00:58:25.300 I think what happens is you see the ladies in our church.
00:58:30.200 You know, I remember coming here and being refreshed.
00:58:32.380 We came into Brian's home.
00:58:33.580 We came into Dan's home.
00:58:34.860 And I'm like, these ladies are lovely and they're peaceful and their homes are nice.
00:58:39.940 And you walk away and you say, I want that.
00:58:43.020 And I never had a conversation with my wife.
00:58:45.020 But even since we got here, there's been a greater desire to dress and be beautiful
00:58:49.900 and act in the same sorts of ways that she sees happening.
00:58:53.020 It's like there was never a direct conversation.
00:58:54.840 It's just that Brian always talks about glory.
00:58:58.060 We're attracted to glory.
00:59:00.060 Yeah.
00:59:00.380 And so if you set before people a picture of beauty and glory and peace and happiness, that's actually more powerful in a world that is disgusting.
00:59:08.920 Yes.
00:59:09.360 And you become like those you surround yourselves with.
00:59:11.520 Yes.
00:59:12.020 Good company.
00:59:13.320 I mean, it's the obvious.
00:59:15.320 You become like your teachers.
00:59:16.540 You become like your peers.
00:59:17.820 This is why in all this, even talking about spiritual protection of kids as well.
00:59:23.080 I mean, these factors really all come together, physical protection, sexual protection, spiritual protection.
00:59:29.820 A lot of it, the most important thing you can do as a father is actually to be involved in a community
00:59:36.060 where there's godliness and good culture and thick Christian living and all of those things happening
00:59:41.760 because then you're not constantly having to fight 50 front battles.
00:59:46.720 We have enough battles in fighting the world and the flesh and the temptation of the devil.
00:59:51.140 we shouldn't have then come into our church communities and the places where we choose to
00:59:55.100 live and build and all these things and be like and now i have to fight my pastor and the in the 0.98
00:59:58.820 church culture and all the that's that's stupid it doesn't work that's what i want to ask is who 0.97
01:00:04.280 can who can who can win that battle it's like there's you can't just be an island i'm just 0.99
01:00:09.100 going to ask a question yeah ask the question i want to hear you guys's response can you be
01:00:14.220 spiritually protecting your family if you're not in a good church with good preaching and good
01:00:19.460 pastoral discipline. It's very difficult. Yeah. I mean, the road is hard. I would say
01:00:27.780 near impossible. And the reason I would say that is because there is actual authority in a pastor,
01:00:34.320 whether good or bad. There's actually authority in the office. That's why they're going to be
01:00:39.200 judged more harshly. There is authority that is in that office. And so if you take your family to
01:00:44.480 a church and you're hearing bad preaching, and I don't mean like the quality of the oration is bad.
01:00:51.260 If you hear one of my sermons, you know that. No, but the content, if the content is actually bad
01:00:57.620 and you're like, well, I'll just have to counter disciple my kids. It's actually the similar thing
01:01:02.380 with education. You know, I've heard like, oh, I send my kids to public school. And then when they
01:01:06.420 get home, I just tell them, you know, undo the things that they learned. Don't be like any of
01:01:10.940 your peers or listen to most of what your teachers say. I mean, what the heck are you doing?
01:01:15.140 It's like you're going to have your children and your family
01:01:17.660 sit under the authority of a preacher
01:01:20.320 that is not preaching the word of God
01:01:23.020 and then expect to counter-disciple them
01:01:25.200 and to have a good outcome.
01:01:27.320 No, no, that is not going to work.
01:01:30.520 No, it's absolutely not.
01:01:32.620 This is a, if there's one thing that I could get
01:01:35.600 our normal listeners to take away from an episode like this,
01:01:39.600 it's don't think that just because you've thought about the
01:01:42.920 proactive, like the reactive aspects of physical protection. And you'd absolutely like your heart
01:01:48.980 rises up when you hear a story of a guy running with the gun in and doing the glorious deed.
01:01:54.360 Are you proactive? Are you proactive? Are you building a world? Are you building a culture?
01:01:58.980 Are you building a family? Are you in a place where other people are doing that,
01:02:03.000 where you are confident that your children can grow up and they're going to have any number of
01:02:06.760 examples to point to? Because that's the most important. That's the heart of the matter.
01:02:10.560 The heart of the matter and protection is actually much more about building than it is about just shooting people.
01:02:18.600 I mean, it's much, much, much more about building up, winning the heart, building the kind of children that they are a protector.
01:02:27.680 They grow to not need somebody to handle them.
01:02:32.200 That's the goal.
01:02:33.120 We're trying to raise men and women, not just children.
01:02:35.860 But we're trying to raise men and women who are going to grow up to be the protectors and the examples.
01:02:41.220 And it's just so hard to do that when you're fighting a six-front battle.
01:02:46.480 Yeah, I think that's incredibly important.
01:02:49.300 Brian, I just want to ask, I know we had some of the things on here as we're wrapping up.
01:02:53.840 Maybe we highlight some of these prerequisites for protectors.
01:02:57.900 Yeah.
01:02:58.680 Maybe somewhere to close.
01:02:59.900 One of them that I've talked a lot about, and people love it.
01:03:03.720 People love to hear this, especially in the mainline evangelical church.
01:03:07.040 They love you particularly.
01:03:08.420 Yeah, because I'm like velvet gloves.
01:03:10.220 You're especially beloved by the theologically liberal world.
01:03:13.680 Yes.
01:03:14.120 I've found, I've noticed.
01:03:15.260 Yes.
01:03:15.860 I know how to interact and be winsome.
01:03:17.980 So one of the things I've said is men should be dangerous and violent.
01:03:21.140 They should have a capacity for violence.
01:03:23.680 Of course, again, going back to the shooting, everybody's like, oh, masculinity, so toxic. 1.00
01:03:28.580 And then they're like praising the guys who went in and shot this tranny for shooting kids. 0.57
01:03:33.720 right so in order dan to be a protector you do have to have a capacity correct me if i'm wrong 0.60
01:03:40.020 to actually be dangerous to be violent i am not going to correct you because you are not wrong
01:03:45.520 that's what i like to hear that's what i like to hear in fact i like it so much brian
01:03:49.940 oh i bet the slider's not up what is the
01:03:53.860 mr no that's not even oh he hit the wrong one i hit the wrong dan agrees with him and he calls
01:04:02.200 them gay yeah what the world is going on it's even later i had pulled out my gun to make a point 0.56
01:04:08.340 and then and then you actually like i i actually want to use it you want it no hey whoa whoa whoa 0.98
01:04:15.040 no violence in the king's home okay no you're right you're right eric and we've talked about
01:04:20.440 some of these elements here like thinking like an evildoer you know you just mentioned men should
01:04:26.180 be capable of day of being dangerous of doing violence men need to be able to think you mentioned
01:04:30.860 this earlier, Dan, think like an evildoer to protect, to know their strategies, approach your
01:04:35.860 home or your internet or your, and think if I were a really evil person who wanted to destroy my
01:04:41.200 children, what would I do? And then put up bulwarks and keep a watch on them. There are things like
01:04:46.500 this, but there are even less, I think, obvious ones. Things like godly father protectors have
01:04:53.960 to be willing to confront difficult, awkward, and painful situations. Because a lot of the time what
01:04:59.360 happens in a family. And we have a perfect biblical example in Absalom and David and Amnon
01:05:04.400 in Tamar, where fathers are called to step into chaos, to step into sin, to step into dysfunction,
01:05:13.160 to protect, to make the right enemies, to make the situation awkward. Like how many families
01:05:19.820 have this story where something terrible happened and the father did nothing and everything was
01:05:24.940 destroyed forever. This is a story that's played out. I won't go into detail. I mean, it's played
01:05:30.300 out my family line. I'm not talking about my father, by the way, but I mean, in my family
01:05:34.340 line, we've seen in different corners where passivity leads to just absolute dysfunction,
01:05:40.240 where someone needed to step in and they didn't. You think of, again, this story where Amnon
01:05:45.420 rapes Tamar, David's kids, and David just, he stands back. He knows about it. He doesn't do
01:05:54.640 anything. And so that's how Absalom steps in. He's so offended. Absalom steps in and then he ends up
01:05:59.900 winning the hearts of the people. There's the whole battle. It ends in Absalom's death. David's,
01:06:04.960 you know, shame. All of this is because David didn't step in as a fatherly protector.
01:06:09.940 And so some of you, you know, fathers need to think about this. In your family dynamics,
01:06:15.240 where are the biggest pain points that you're asking your wife to deal with, that you're not
01:06:18.640 just stepping in and saying, I'm going to be the bad guy. I'm going to be the awkward guy.
01:06:22.840 I'm going to go and I'm going to say like, let's actually, let's talk about this.
01:06:26.320 And this is a lesson I've had to learn over and over in marriage growing.
01:06:31.160 You know, when you get married, I was 20 when we got married.
01:06:33.060 There were lots of situations where as a young husband and then as a young father,
01:06:38.140 I had to learn, same as a pastor, that you can't let sleeping dogs lie.
01:06:43.620 You can't just let some of these things roll.
01:06:45.460 They won't fix themselves.
01:06:47.160 You have to be the guy that goes in and takes responsibility and initiative.
01:06:51.420 and say, what happens when something bad has already happened?
01:06:55.400 Maybe you weren't proactive enough.
01:06:56.640 Maybe it was just stuff happens.
01:06:58.300 But it's interesting with David, the first sin is bad.
01:07:03.320 Yeah.
01:07:03.720 Right?
01:07:04.520 Yeah, it's bad.
01:07:05.160 The rape is bad.
01:07:06.740 Then losing Absalom's heart and having a complete revolt against David's kingdom 0.95
01:07:13.180 is like a thousand times worse.
01:07:15.680 Yeah, it metastasized. 0.76
01:07:17.180 That's one of the things that would encourage men is like,
01:07:19.240 if you don't do something now, it's only going to get worse.
01:07:21.420 Like, cancer doesn't get better when you're like,
01:07:23.720 ah, let's let it marinate.
01:07:25.380 Let's let it marinate.
01:07:26.660 Let's let it marinate.
01:07:29.000 I don't know why that hit me so.
01:07:31.760 Like, I was picturing a doctor.
01:07:33.380 And he walks in and he's got a big tumor on his neck.
01:07:35.800 And he's like, let's let it marinate.
01:07:37.000 You want to know the best part?
01:07:38.240 Yeah, let's hear it.
01:07:39.600 I stole that straight up.
01:07:41.100 I heard that one time from Ed Stetzer.
01:07:43.280 Isn't that where you learn most of your best?
01:07:45.560 99%.
01:07:46.120 Stop just naming names.
01:07:47.880 99% Ed Stetzer, 1% Beth.
01:07:50.920 Beth. Beth Moore. Yep. Locked in. Locked in. When I say Beth Moore and Russell Moore,
01:07:56.280 I actually mean the same person, but yeah, continue. No, that was, I just think in terms
01:08:01.340 of prerequisites, there has to be an a priori willingness to be disliked, to confront difficult
01:08:04.880 situations, to be the guy that steps in and says, this isn't like, I'm going to own this. This is
01:08:10.540 my thing. And on the proactivity and in the reactive side, a father has to do that. When
01:08:16.840 that doesn't happen when that fails worlds fall apart families collapse civilization collapse
01:08:21.520 schools collapse churches collapse like this is how you this is how a culture dies
01:08:26.060 is fathers not and this is why it's so disgusting when you see purported conservative men in
01:08:33.640 institutions or in churches who are like i'm conservative i'm holding the line here and
01:08:39.220 ignoring massive issues well we see this over and over again this has happened many times where you
01:08:46.240 have these like conservative stalwarts and then in their seminaries and in their institutions
01:08:50.620 the people are running amok with crt and all kinds of other you know nonsense well yeah i mean it's 0.71
01:08:55.460 it's it's like the the meme right where wherever you see like a white blm girl protesting somewhere
01:09:01.540 there's a capitalist father who paid for the education and all of it you know i mean that's 0.99
01:09:06.720 the reality so then you would say like okay don't make that stupid decision though don't give your 0.99
01:09:12.740 daughter to the world that would be bad yep well on that bombshell any last any last words gentlemen 0.95
01:09:19.380 before we wrap it up no basically brian i want to let people know that you have an album
01:09:23.840 these are my eric so true king key initiatives but by the way if you haven't checked out psalm 149
01:09:30.440 boom i know you have i have you guys ben's in here you guys have checked this out yeah i've
01:09:36.220 listened to the whole thing okay as all the way my generation says this is liquid gold dripping
01:09:41.380 into my ears. Liquid waves of love
01:09:43.580 were washing over me. I might be uncomfortable
01:09:45.540 now that I think about it.
01:09:47.260 Liquid. I am wildly
01:09:49.580 uncomfortable with how my music
01:09:51.680 is being described right now.
01:09:53.540 Waves of liquid love. Go back to Chuck
01:09:55.600 Finney. Listener, I did
01:09:57.580 not intend for anybody to
01:09:59.600 promote my album with these descriptions.
01:10:01.480 It is like waves
01:10:03.440 of liquid love. Here we are. As my generation
01:10:05.640 says, Brian's music is
01:10:07.220 gang gang.
01:10:08.940 Your generation, Eric. I still don't know what that means.
01:10:11.140 Eric, how old are you?
01:10:12.040 I am 22.
01:10:14.020 I think you almost said 27, and that was too old, you realize.
01:10:17.920 You actually have to be.
01:10:18.900 Because you're like, 27, that's a kid, right?
01:10:21.820 I'm 48.
