00:00:00.000 Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the White House announced a new war on hate to combat alleged Islamophobia and other forms of bigotry.
00:00:06.180 They claim that hate is on the rise, but is that true?
00:00:08.780 And even if it is, does the government have any business policing hate?
00:00:12.500 Also, a caravan of thousands of illegal alien invaders makes its way to the southern border.
00:00:17.020 More families are homeschooling than ever before, according to a new report.
00:00:20.160 An organization of birdwatchers ends racism by getting rid of racist bird names, finally.
00:00:24.960 And a viral video raises the question, is it okay to recline your seat on an airplane?
00:00:29.360 The answer is no, but we'll talk about that and much more today on the Matt Walsh Show.

00:01:53.440 That's GenuCell.com slash Walsh, or by calling 800-SKIN-211.
00:01:58.300 Well, it's been a while since we've heard from Kamala Harris.
00:02:01.200 And if you've been paying attention to anything Kamala Harris has done over the past three years, that's not especially surprising.
00:02:06.240 She has failed spectacularly at every single task she's been assigned since she became vice president,
00:02:12.660 almost as if her whole job is to pretend to solve problems while actually making them worse,
00:02:17.260 which I guess is basically the unofficial job of nearly everyone who's held a job in Washington at any point this century,
00:02:23.540 or really for most of the century before that.
00:02:27.080 As for Kamala, in 2021, for example, the White House put her in charge of managing the crisis at the border.
00:02:32.840 But unbelievable as it may be, her strategy of wagging her finger at Guatemalans and telling them,
00:02:39.100 do not come here, did not prove to be especially effective.
00:02:42.360 A year later, the Biden administration dispatched Harris to Germany just a few weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine
00:02:47.980 with the goal of seeking to avert a war, as the Los Angeles Times reported at the time.
00:02:53.340 And in the end, as we know, the Russians, I guess, took one look at Kamala Harris and went into Ukraine immediately.
00:02:59.580 With a track record like that, it's not hard to imagine that Muslims all over the United States are quaking in fear today.
00:03:06.760 And that's because this week, the Biden administration gave the woman, who somehow became vice president, yet another task.
00:03:13.060 And this time, her job was to announce and to lead the first ever national strategy to combat Islamophobia.
00:03:21.520 Harris herself made the announcement in a video message.
00:03:24.960 Watch.
00:03:25.300 Our nation was founded on the fundamental principle that all people should have the freedom to live, to worship and to be without fear of violence or persecution.
00:03:39.820 Every person has the right to live safe from violence, hate and bigotry.
00:03:44.740 And for those reasons and so many more, President Joe Biden and I have a duty, not only to keep the people of our nation safe,
00:03:53.760 but to condemn unequivocally and forcefully all forms of hate.
00:04:01.300 That's always really bold, always a really bold message.
00:04:05.460 We condemn hate.
00:04:08.200 We condemn bad things.
00:04:10.240 We don't like bad things and bad feelings.
00:04:13.560 We're against them.
00:04:15.460 Now, before we get into the whole strategy to combat Islamophobia, it's important to pause the video, I think, just to highlight what she says in the first 30 seconds of her big announcement.
00:04:25.620 She says that every person has the right to live safe from violence.
00:04:31.020 That part we can agree.
00:04:32.760 Then she also says live safe from bigotry and hate.
00:04:36.840 Well, see, that part's not actually remotely true.
00:04:39.680 And only someone like Kamala Harris could be dumb enough to think that it is true.
00:04:43.620 No, you don't have the right to live safe from bigotry.
00:04:46.540 And that's because other people have the freedom of speech and freedom of thought.
00:04:51.900 And they're allowed to think less of you for good reasons or bad reasons or smart reasons or stupid reasons or even for racist reasons.
00:04:59.660 They're allowed to.
00:05:00.700 They have that right.
00:05:02.060 People can be as bigoted as they want, in fact, as long as they're not committing any crimes in the process.
00:05:07.660 Nobody has the right to be free from the bigoted opinions and views and attitudes of other people.
00:05:13.780 That's the whole point of the First Amendment.
00:05:15.940 It protects speech that you think is good.
00:05:17.760 It also protects speech that you think is bad.
00:05:19.480 And as everyone says, but few seem to really believe when it comes down to it, the First Amendment is really only ever needed for that latter category.
00:05:27.300 If the First Amendment does not protect speech that people find abhorrent, then the First Amendment effectively protects nothing at all.
00:05:36.440 But the Biden administration apparently disagrees.
00:05:38.600 And now, out of nowhere, they say you have a right to be safe from bigotry.
00:05:43.580 Well, how will the government enforce this new right, you might ask?
00:05:46.400 And what exactly qualifies as bigotry?
00:05:48.840 Is it still acceptable to discriminate against white males, for example?
00:05:53.900 If not, that's bad news for literally every corporation and university in the whole country.
00:05:58.880 Do they have to revise all their policies overnight?
00:06:01.340 I mean, is that what we're talking about?
00:06:03.820 Well, we already know the answer to that question.
00:06:06.260 Of course, only certain kinds of bigotry are forbidden.
00:06:09.400 The kinds of bigotry that predominantly affect loyal voters of the Democratic Party.
00:06:13.080 And to that end, here's Kamala Harris explaining the administration's plan to combat Islamophobia.
00:06:20.200 And today, we take another important step forward in our fight against hate.
00:06:26.980 For years, Muslims in America and those perceived to be Muslim have endured a disproportionate number of hate-fueled attacks.
00:06:36.040 As a result of the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,
00:06:41.560 we have seen an uptick in anti-Palestinian, anti-Arab, anti-Semitic, and Islamophobic incidents across America,
00:06:51.000 including the brutal attack of a Palestinian-American woman who is Muslim and the killing of her six-year-old son.
00:06:59.720 A senseless act of violence that the Department of Justice is investigating as a hate crime.
00:07:05.700 For so many people in our nation, the past few days and weeks have brought about all-too-familiar fears.
00:07:15.000 Fears that they will be targeted, profiled, or attacked simply because of who they are, how they worship, or how they look.
00:07:23.440 And so today, I am proud to announce the Biden-Harris administration will develop our nation's first national strategy to counter Islamophobia.
00:07:35.040 This strategy will be a comprehensive and detailed plan to protect Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim from hate, bigotry, and violence.
00:07:44.500 Now, for an address that's intended for a domestic audience, it's all very war-like.
00:07:50.200 Our fight against hate is underway, Harris says, as she sits sternly at her little desk in front of the American flag.
00:07:55.760 We have a strategy that's comprehensive and detailed, she declares.
00:07:59.740 On social media, Kamala Harris went further, saying,
00:08:02.420 This action is the latest step forward in our work to combat a surge of hate in America.
00:08:08.600 Well, hearing a sitting vice president talk like this about American citizens is unsettling, to say the least.
00:08:14.500 This is the kind of language you normally hear our leaders use when they're announcing a targeted strike against terrorist cells in the Middle East.
00:08:22.060 And now that language, once again, is being turned inward against American citizens.
00:08:26.560 The Biden administration is on this war-like footing against its own citizens.
00:08:31.020 And what could possibly justify this, you might ask?
00:08:34.140 Better be something good.
00:08:36.060 There better be a reason for this kind of hostility and brazen disregard for the Constitution, and in particular, the First Amendment.
00:08:42.680 But there's no reason for this whatsoever.
00:08:44.320 The only justification that Kamala Harris provides in her speech is that she says that, number one, she says that for years, there's been a disproportionate amount of hate being targeted at people perceived to be Muslim.
00:08:58.540 She says that's been going on for years.
00:09:01.040 And then, on top of that, there's supposedly been an uptick in what she calls Islamophobic attacks in the United States since October 7th.
00:09:08.060 Well, is that true?
00:09:11.500 I mean, have Muslim Americans been disproportionately targeted for years?
00:09:17.480 And has there been an uptick?
00:09:20.480 Kamala Harris didn't provide any kind of citation.
00:09:22.460 In fact, almost every single time that we hear about some group or another that's being disproportionately targeted, in nearly every case, there's no citation offered.
00:09:32.980 It's just asserted.
00:09:34.880 It's stated.
00:09:35.980 And we're supposed to accept it.
00:09:38.240 Well, in this case, I went looking to find out where this claim is coming from.
00:09:43.060 As far as I could tell, the source for this claim is the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR.
00:09:49.420 And there are obviously reasons to think that CAIR might not be the most unbiased source on something like this.
00:09:55.140 So I was very interested to know how exactly they determined that anti-Muslim attacks are on the rise in the United States in just the past month.
00:10:02.260 Well, on CAIR's website, they provide this explanation.
00:10:04.380 Quote, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said that it has received 774 complaints, including reported bias incidents since the escalation of violence in Israel and Palestine on October 7th.
00:10:20.120 You know, that's supposedly more complaints than they normally receive in similar time periods, they say.
00:10:25.100 Now, to be clear, these are not reported crimes or documented arrests, much less are they, for the most part, violent attacks or anything close to that.
00:10:36.260 This statistic is based on reports that somehow get filtered to CAIR.
00:10:41.740 These are complaints.
00:10:43.740 So the actual headline, if you care about being honest and accurate, is that there has been an uptick in complaints.
00:10:50.900 Complaints are on the rise.
00:10:53.040 Well, are the complaints true?
00:10:55.100 Are the complaints complaining about actual incidents of bigotry?
00:10:59.420 And what qualifies as an incident of bigotry?
00:11:02.560 On that last question, we might be able to come up with some kind of answer.
00:11:05.920 There have been, after all, some more widely reported incidents of alleged Islamophobic bigotry.
00:11:12.700 One of those reports, according to CAIR, involved, quote,
00:11:15.260 a man who reportedly drove his truck through and brandished weapons against pro-Palestine protesters in Minnesota.
00:11:22.580 Well, that sounds pretty bad.
00:11:26.040 It sounds hateful, even.
00:11:27.860 So I looked into that incident a little bit more.
00:11:30.300 And here's the video of what happened, which CAIR actually provides the link to.
00:11:34.520 And here's what happens.
00:11:36.520 Watch.
00:11:36.760 I'm right here.
00:12:00.780 I know.
00:12:15.540 So that changes things a little bit.
00:12:17.380 For one thing, there was no truck involved in this incident.
00:12:19.680 It's clearly a sedan, what looks like a Ford Fusion.
00:12:21.640 And, you know, just semantics, but if we care about being accurate.
00:12:25.500 And it's obvious from the footage that the mob of so-called pro-Palestine protesters were blocking the street.
00:12:30.820 They were standing in the middle of the intersection, just blocking off the intersection, which they have no authority to do.
00:12:36.580 I know that leftist protesters do this all the time.
00:12:38.740 And I guess, I don't know, people assume that they have legal authority to do it.
00:12:41.920 They don't.
00:12:42.560 Actually, it turns out that just because you have some cause that you care about, that doesn't give you the authority to just shut down traffic whenever you feel like it.
00:12:52.860 And so the man attempts to continue on his way.
00:12:57.000 The mob surrounds the car, starts banging on the windshield, kicking the car and going crazy.
00:13:01.800 And by the way, at this point, they've surrounded the entire car so that no matter where the guy goes, he's going to be running into protesters, right?
00:13:13.820 If you don't want to be run into, don't surround every escape route.
00:13:18.920 There are people around it.
00:13:20.560 There's nowhere he can go.
00:13:22.900 What is he supposed to do?
00:13:23.880 Just offer himself up to the mob to be torn to pieces?
00:13:26.420 Now, even if you think the driver was in the wrong somehow, which he wasn't, there's also no indication that he hates Muslims.
00:13:35.600 If anything, he seems to hate protesters who block traffic.
00:13:39.480 And that is a form of bigotry that nearly everyone can relate to.
00:13:44.580 Now, according to a blogger who was on the scene, one protester complained, quote,
00:13:48.260 it was scary, honestly, because there have been protests where people run through the crowd with their vehicles and people, like, ended up dying.
00:13:54.180 And then knowing he was armed, like, a part of me wanted to run away.
00:13:57.880 But a part of me was, like, trying to assist everyone else in, like, stopping this car from causing more harm, too, because there's children here.
00:14:05.460 There's families here.
00:14:08.040 Well, here's an idea.
00:14:10.700 Maybe don't take your children to the middle of the road and block traffic.
00:14:16.080 Okay, maybe don't stand in an intersection with your children.
00:14:19.040 But that concept is unthinkable to these protesters, apparently.
00:14:23.420 And in their effort to sell this incident as Islamophobic, various left-wing activists uploaded additional footage.
00:14:29.840 And in this one, we can see the man brandishing a knife after he was surrounded.
00:14:33.920 Let's watch that.
00:14:34.740 Okay, so they're making this guy out to be some kind of white supremacist, some kind of Islamophobic terrorist, because he was driving in his car.
00:14:54.260 A mob surrounded him, and he brandished a knife to defend himself.
00:14:58.520 And he quickly realized that a knife against this whole crowd, this whole mob, is not going to do much good.
00:15:03.540 He gets back into the car.
00:15:04.840 Didn't actually hurt anyone.
00:15:06.820 And this is the kind of incident that CARE is classifying as Islamophobic.
00:15:11.100 When there is no evidence at all that this guy has any Muslim, anti-Muslim bigotry, period.
00:15:20.180 And in turn, the White House is using incidents like this to claim that Muslims are seeing some kind of heightened backlash,
00:15:25.760 which justifies wartime footing against MAGA Republicans and all forms of, quote-unquote, hatred.
00:15:31.500 They're also using incidents, it would appear, that are far more ambiguous and irrelevant than this.
00:15:37.700 Keep in mind that, again, reports, mere reports of biased incidents are being counted in the total.
00:15:45.540 Well, what is a biased incident?
00:15:48.500 There is no one single definition, and that's the point, really.
00:15:51.780 You know, it's just something that can be whatever they want it to be.
00:15:54.100 But every university in the country has its own bias incident response team.
00:15:59.260 And if you go to any university website and you find their bias incident page, you'll see some kind of definition.
00:16:05.160 And all the definitions are very similar.
00:16:07.700 And so generally, when anyone on the left talks about bias incidents, this is what they're talking about.
00:16:11.240 Here's the University of Denver, for example.
00:16:13.640 This is how they define it.
00:16:14.760 The university defines bias incidents as any behavior that targets individuals or groups based on their actual or perceived group identities.
00:16:23.960 Examples may include, but are not limited to, graffiti, harassment, jokes, direct insults, etc.
00:16:31.080 The specific forms, content, motivation, intention, and impact of bias incidents vary.
00:16:37.160 Jokes are included.
00:16:39.160 So a bias incident is anything that someone says or does that someone else interprets as biased.
00:16:47.960 Which is to say that an increase in biased incident reports really doesn't mean anything at all.
00:16:55.460 And if you announce ahead of time that a certain group is going to start experiencing more biased incidents,
00:17:01.220 and then members of that group immediately start complaining about biased incidents,
00:17:05.760 that does not indicate that there are actually more biased incidents, whatever a biased incident even is.
00:17:12.340 All it indicates is that the people in that group are being encouraged to interpret incidents that way.
00:17:19.280 So why exactly is the Biden administration doing this?
00:17:22.360 The most benign possible explanation is that they're not planning on really doing anything.
00:17:26.200 Like, this is not anything.
00:17:27.160 It's just theater.
00:17:27.860 And they're just trying to win some votes in swing states like Michigan by pandering to various Muslim communities
00:17:33.040 by announcing a national strategy to combat Islamophobia.
00:17:37.420 And if that's true, it wouldn't be the first time that the White House has done something like this.
00:17:40.680 In fact, just a few months ago, the White House announced its bold new national plan to combat anti-Semitism.
00:17:47.160 They pledged that it would end hatred against Jews in the United States.
00:17:50.040 But if you've been, you know, seeing any of the footage from college campuses recently,
00:17:54.160 you know that the White House's plan hasn't exactly accomplished much.
00:17:57.600 It was all PR.
00:17:59.220 So maybe the same thing is happening here with this new plan to combat Islamophobia.
00:18:04.280 Maybe they're just going to record a video and release a press release and just move on.
00:18:09.060 But there's reason to think that something else is going on here.
00:18:11.940 You might have noticed that over the last few years,
00:18:14.300 the left and the media tend to announce ahead of time that there will be a rise of a certain kind of hate crime
00:18:20.140 according to current events.
00:18:21.780 And then, like magic, the prophecy curiously tends to fulfill itself.
00:18:27.380 And then the left uses that increase in hate to assume more power and to demonize their political opponents.
00:18:33.740 We saw this during COVID.
00:18:36.300 Nearly as soon as COVID made its way to the United States,
00:18:39.220 Democrats, if you remember, started declaring that the worst thing about the virus
00:18:43.820 is how it would lead to anti-Asian sentiment.
00:18:47.140 And they started saying this right away.
00:18:49.700 And then, what do you know?
00:18:50.820 That uptick happened right on schedule.
00:18:53.640 As ABC News reported in 2021, quote,
00:18:55.860 a new study suggests that former President Donald Trump's inflammatory rhetoric around the coronavirus,
00:19:00.440 which is believed to have originated in China,
00:19:02.400 helped spark anti-Asian Twitter content and likely perpetuated racist attitudes.
00:19:07.360 At the same time, Democrats refused to acknowledge the obvious fact
00:19:10.640 that the so-called hate crime surge against Asians during COVID
00:19:13.380 was almost entirely driven by black perpetrators,
00:19:17.400 which is a demographic group that votes Democrat,
00:19:19.920 or a demographic group which votes Democrat by a margin of 9 to 1.
00:19:24.180 As City Journal reported, quote,
00:19:25.880 blacks are responsible for 305% more violent crime against Asians
00:19:29.820 than neighborhood demographics would predict,
00:19:31.580 while whites and Hispanics commit significantly fewer attacks against Asians
00:19:35.140 than would be expected.
00:19:36.520 Now, Democrats never talked about those numbers
00:19:39.260 because they didn't want to demonize one of their primary voting blocs.
00:19:42.060 They constructed a narrative, and they followed through with it,
00:19:44.560 no matter how obviously false it was.
00:19:47.420 That's how cynical these people are.
00:19:49.620 But also profoundly unoriginal,
00:19:51.300 which is why we're now seeing this same strategy play out all over again
00:19:54.840 in exactly the same way.
00:19:56.940 They're desperately hoping that their whole narrative about, quote, unquote,
00:20:00.480 Islamophobia will manifest in reality
00:20:03.120 if they just keep pushing it over and over again.
00:20:04.900 And either way, they'll pretend it has manifested
00:20:07.020 whether it really has or not.
00:20:08.860 But the key point is that
00:20:09.820 even if you concede the left's central claim,
00:20:13.200 even if you pretend it's true
00:20:14.380 that we're seeing a rise in attacks on Muslims in this country,
00:20:17.600 then there's still no justification for the federal government
00:20:20.180 to announce a plan to police hate.
00:20:22.660 Because whether it's hate against Muslims or Jews
00:20:24.960 or white people or anyone else,
00:20:27.260 hate itself on its own
00:20:29.500 is not something the Biden administration
00:20:32.020 has any authority or any ability to resolve.
00:20:35.440 Hatred is an emotional state.
00:20:37.120 It exists in the human heart.
00:20:39.180 You cannot eliminate it even if you tried.
00:20:42.700 Which is, of course, good news for liberal activists,
00:20:44.920 the very people who are pushing this federal war on hate,
00:20:47.880 because they're among the most hateful people on the planet.
00:20:49.960 They're gleeful whenever any of their political opponents
00:20:52.120 lose their jobs or even their lives.
00:20:54.760 So if anyone should be jailed under some grand new plan
00:20:57.460 to punish hateful people, then it's them.
00:20:59.180 But you can't do that.
00:21:00.560 You can't police hate.
00:21:02.600 Now, if somebody commits an actual crime driven by hate,
00:21:05.440 you can punish the crime.
00:21:07.320 But then the fact that it was motivated by hate
00:21:09.220 as opposed to some other nasty emotion
00:21:11.060 is basically irrelevant, or it should be.
00:21:14.320 Hate itself, the emotion, the thought,
00:21:16.920 is outside the purview of the government.
00:21:20.240 When the White House announces yet another war on hate,
00:21:22.620 it's actually announcing a war on feelings
00:21:24.660 that it thinks we shouldn't feel.
00:21:26.760 The vice president is saying,
00:21:29.260 there are a lot of people feeling unapproved emotions,
00:21:31.920 and we're going to put a stop to that.
00:21:34.460 And when you think of it that way,
00:21:35.860 which is the accurate way,
00:21:37.500 you see how dystopian this really is.
00:21:40.260 It's also, again, impossible.
00:21:43.120 They cannot stop hate,
00:21:44.360 even if we agree that they should try,
00:21:46.180 and we do not agree.
00:21:47.300 But they can use the pretense of a war on hate
00:21:51.660 to seize more control over our lives,
00:21:54.980 and, they hope, our minds.
00:21:58.000 And, of course, that's what all this is really about.

00:23:14.940 Yahoo reports,
00:23:15.860 It's a large migrant caravan comprising many Central Americans and Venezuelans,
00:23:19.820 left Southern Mexico on Monday for the United States.
00:23:21.940 Organizers and officials said as Washington grapples with renewed pressure on its southern border.
00:23:25.960 Officials in the southern state of Chiapas said that some 3,500 people set off on foot
00:23:30.620 from the city of Tapuqla,
00:23:32.500 Tapuqla,
00:23:33.780 Tapuqla,
00:23:34.440 Tapuqla,
00:23:34.840 Tapuqla,
00:23:35.840 Tapuqla,
00:23:36.840 Tapuqla,
00:23:37.640 Tapuqla.
00:23:38.900 Anyway,
00:23:39.300 it's near the Guatemalan border.
00:23:40.600 Well,
00:23:40.740 one of the caravan's organizers said there were around 5,000 in the group.
00:23:46.040 U.S. President Joe Biden,
00:23:46.980 who is seeking re-election next year,
00:23:48.800 is under pressure to curb the number of people crossing illegally in the United States.
00:23:54.440 But most of the latest caravan are from Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Venezuela,
00:24:01.240 and other countries as well.
00:24:03.480 And it's making its way here.
00:24:05.080 Maybe the most important thing is just to see the footage of this caravan,
00:24:08.700 which we have here.
00:24:09.340 Let's watch that.
00:24:15.920 So, in other words, it's a lot of people, as you can see.
00:24:18.240 Just a whole parade of them walking casually to the southern border of the United States
00:24:24.700 while our government stands there and watches them helplessly.
00:24:30.000 It just shows how impotent our government is that, you know,
00:24:35.960 it's one thing when you've got people that are sneaking across in the middle of the night,
00:24:40.540 running across the border.
00:24:41.840 I mean, that's not good either.
00:24:43.000 And we should be able to put a stop to that if we actually tried.
00:24:45.920 But when you've got a whole group of people that are just walking,
00:24:50.980 you can see them hundreds of miles away, and we know exactly where they're going.
00:24:57.420 And we sit here as if we're powerless to stop it.
00:25:01.540 That makes it even more pathetic.
00:25:03.980 And look, I know that there are important events happening overseas right now.
00:25:07.880 There are always important events happening overseas.
00:25:10.200 But the most important thing to us in this country should be preserving and protecting our own country.
00:25:17.240 And we can be of little use to any ally if we cease to exist.
00:25:22.520 And that's what we are confronting right now.
00:25:24.560 That's the reality that we face.
00:25:27.180 We hear a lot about existential threats these days.
00:25:29.800 Well, what you just saw in that video, that's it.
00:25:34.260 That's just one small portion of the existential threat.
00:25:39.560 It really is the end of the country.
00:25:41.960 The constant invasion from the South represents the end of this country.
00:25:45.820 These people, the people in the caravan, were told,
00:25:51.120 well, they're looking for a better life.
00:25:54.860 Right?
00:25:55.200 They're trying to take care of their families.
00:25:58.440 And in some cases, that's true.
00:26:02.220 In fact, in many cases, that's true.
00:26:04.160 But we as Americans are also looking for a better life.
00:26:09.320 We also want to take care of our families.
00:26:13.460 And that means protecting our border, protecting our sovereignty,
00:26:17.240 our national identity, our way of life.
00:26:21.180 That's what it means.
00:26:22.540 At least that's what it should mean.
00:26:24.760 Speaking of protecting our families,
00:26:26.280 we have this from Daily Wire about the homeschooling surge,
00:26:30.880 which is still continuing.
00:26:32.180 Homeschooling has become America's fastest-growing form of education
00:26:34.980 and continues to explode in popularity
00:26:37.240 long after pandemic-era remote learning has ended,
00:26:39.980 a new Washington Post analysis found.
00:26:42.760 The dramatic rise in homeschooling that began during the pandemic
00:26:45.320 continued through the school year that ended this past spring,
00:26:48.420 according to the Post's analysis,
00:26:49.800 which looked at data from nearly 7,000 school districts across the country.
00:26:53.600 Homeschooling's continued popularity flies in the face of predictions
00:26:56.140 that most families would go back to in-person classes.
00:26:59.300 At schools, once controversial pandemic restrictions
00:27:01.600 like mask mandates ended.
00:27:03.480 Another concern parents had after the pandemic
00:27:05.100 is learning loss in public schools,
00:27:07.320 which may also be driving some families to homeschool.
00:27:10.220 The Post analysis stated,
00:27:11.840 homeschooling's surging popularity crosses
00:27:13.560 every measurable line of politics, geography, and demographics.
00:27:17.740 Which is an important point in all this,
00:27:19.360 and a very significant point,
00:27:20.440 that for a long time,
00:27:23.500 we've associated homeschooling
00:27:25.200 with a kind of conservative Christian demographic.
00:27:31.320 And it's, I imagine, still predominantly
00:27:34.700 conservatives who homeschool,
00:27:36.580 Christians who homeschool,
00:27:38.240 but it's not only that.
00:27:40.200 We're seeing stark,
00:27:41.500 a stark rise in homeschooling
00:27:42.900 that cuts across demographics,
00:27:45.960 which is very significant, obviously.
00:27:49.260 The analysis looked at data from 32 states
00:27:52.000 and District of Columbia,
00:27:52.860 which represents more than 60% of school-aged children.
00:27:55.640 The data is incomplete
00:27:56.560 because some states do not have
00:27:58.220 reliable tallies of homeschoolers,
00:28:00.160 and 11 states, including Texas,
00:28:01.680 Michigan, Connecticut, and Illinois,
00:28:03.540 do not require families to notify the state
00:28:05.520 when they decide to homeschool.
00:28:06.700 Nevertheless, the numbers that are available
00:28:08.640 indicate that homeschooling
00:28:09.620 has become a mainstay
00:28:10.840 of the American educational system.
00:28:12.840 Before the pandemic,
00:28:13.780 there were 1.5 million homeschoolers in the U.S.
00:28:16.760 Now there are between 1.9 million
00:28:18.460 and 2.7 million homeschoolers in the country,
00:28:21.200 according to the Post's analysis.
00:28:24.880 And that, again, as it says,
00:28:27.480 that's probably an undercount
00:28:29.400 because there are the states
00:28:32.420 where homeschoolers have to declare themselves,
00:28:35.280 and then there are states
00:28:36.400 when there is no requirement.
00:28:38.380 And so you can only sort of guess.
00:28:40.980 And by the way,
00:28:41.640 there shouldn't be any requirement.
00:28:44.340 Like, I shouldn't have to,
00:28:45.760 I shouldn't have to say anything
00:28:47.260 to the school system.
00:28:49.200 If I'm opting out of the school system,
00:28:50.900 I don't have to ask your permission.
00:28:52.400 I don't have to tell you
00:28:53.440 what business is it of yours.
00:28:55.680 You don't own my child.
00:28:57.620 I don't have to account for my child
00:28:59.600 to you in the public school system
00:29:01.320 if I'm pulling my kids out.
00:29:03.560 At least I shouldn't have to.
00:29:05.640 And that's the way the law is in many states.
00:29:08.620 So they can only guess.
00:29:10.920 And my guess would be, you know,
00:29:12.660 if they're talking around 3 million homeschoolers,
00:29:14.600 it's probably more than that.
00:29:16.640 But the most important fact
00:29:17.800 is that it's significantly more
00:29:19.500 than it was even a few years ago.
00:29:21.740 And, you know,
00:29:22.340 we talked about homeschooling in detail
00:29:23.720 last week in response
00:29:26.980 to the broad side against homeschooling
00:29:30.220 that was launched by John Oliver.
00:29:32.480 We don't need to repeat all that.
00:29:33.660 All I will say is that
00:29:34.600 as I predicted at the time,
00:29:37.840 this, you know,
00:29:38.500 going back to when all the lockdowns
00:29:40.280 were happening,
00:29:40.760 I said this at the time,
00:29:41.880 the public school system
00:29:42.680 made a massive strategic error
00:29:45.580 by shutting down
00:29:47.640 and going to remote learning,
00:29:49.500 quote unquote,
00:29:50.100 for half a year or a year
00:29:51.580 or more in some cases.
00:29:54.140 Now, it was bad for kids,
00:29:56.260 which is the most important thing,
00:29:58.060 but the system also shot itself in the foot
00:30:00.180 because it gave parents a chance
00:30:03.240 to see and to hear
00:30:04.700 what is actually being taught
00:30:06.180 in the classroom,
00:30:07.660 what's actually happening
00:30:08.620 in the classroom.
00:30:09.940 They got an inside look.
00:30:11.380 They got a kind of
00:30:12.020 behind the scenes look
00:30:13.280 and many of them
00:30:14.040 didn't like what they saw
00:30:15.440 because prior to that,
00:30:18.960 if you wanted to know
00:30:19.760 what was happening
00:30:20.400 inside your kid's classroom,
00:30:21.600 you could ask your kid
00:30:22.840 and kids sort of notoriously
00:30:25.240 can be very light on details.
00:30:28.560 You know, you ask them
00:30:29.080 how their day was
00:30:29.780 and you might get a fine,
00:30:31.800 like one word
00:30:32.560 to summarize an entire day.
00:30:34.020 So you could try
00:30:35.940 to find out that way
00:30:36.720 or you could visit the classroom
00:30:38.360 and there might be specific days
00:30:41.160 when it's parent day
00:30:42.860 and parents show up
00:30:43.760 and they're, you know,
00:30:44.680 but any of us
00:30:46.660 who went to public school,
00:30:47.380 we remember what that was like.
00:30:48.780 We remember the specific days,
00:30:50.220 a couple days of the year
00:30:50.980 when the parents come
00:30:51.880 and they're, you know,
00:30:52.780 they follow you around
00:30:54.360 and they're watching
00:30:55.040 and we can all remember
00:30:57.120 that we liked those days
00:30:59.640 because the teachers
00:31:00.940 changed quite a bit.
00:31:02.500 They were on their best behavior,
00:31:04.020 and they were much friendlier
00:31:05.560 when the parents were around.
00:31:09.240 Well, it was kind of,
00:31:09.920 it was kind of,
00:31:10.360 it was sort of a double-edged sword
00:31:11.460 because the teachers were nicer
00:31:13.880 and they were friendlier
00:31:14.420 when the parents were there,
00:31:15.040 but they also made you do actual work
00:31:16.700 if the parents were there.
00:31:18.020 So they weren't going to,
00:31:18.680 you know,
00:31:18.900 the teachers that would usually
00:31:20.000 just put on a movie,
00:31:21.300 they're not going to do that
00:31:22.200 when the parents are visiting.
00:31:24.480 But either way,
00:31:25.360 this was different
00:31:27.220 because it gave like a everyday
00:31:29.100 look into what was going on
00:31:32.240 and parents saw that
00:31:33.380 and a lot of them didn't like it.
00:31:34.940 Also, parents were forced
00:31:36.240 to keep their kids at home
00:31:37.320 and many of them started homeschooling
00:31:41.080 or quasi-homeschooling
00:31:42.100 out of necessity
00:31:42.700 and they found out
00:31:43.960 during the process
00:31:44.620 that they can do it.
00:31:46.900 It's good for their kids,
00:31:48.220 it's good for their family,
00:31:49.140 and they can do it.
00:31:51.580 See, this is the one advantage
00:31:53.320 that the public school system had,
00:31:55.520 that they gave,
00:31:56.100 they forfeited this advantage.
00:31:58.000 But, you know,
00:31:59.100 homeschooling was always
00:31:59.980 a better option,
00:32:00.720 it was always superior,
00:32:02.220 but the public school system
00:32:03.800 had the massive,
00:32:04.880 seemingly insurmountable advantage
00:32:06.600 of being the default, right?
00:32:09.200 Being the system
00:32:09.980 that nearly everyone
00:32:10.860 had inherited
00:32:11.700 and for many parents
00:32:15.480 doing anything else
00:32:16.580 seemed incomprehensible.
00:32:19.320 Change is hard,
00:32:20.560 change is scary,
00:32:21.660 and even if you can
00:32:22.460 intellectually understand
00:32:23.620 the benefits of the change,
00:32:24.900 it's still very, very difficult
00:32:25.940 to make the leap
00:32:27.240 and to take the risk
00:32:28.580 and to say,
00:32:29.200 okay, you know,
00:32:31.080 I'm going to do this thing
00:32:32.260 that will profoundly change
00:32:34.240 my life and my lifestyle,
00:32:35.480 but I'm going to do it
00:32:36.180 and I'm going to accept that change.
00:32:38.700 Most people just aren't
00:32:39.620 going to do that.
00:32:40.240 They don't want to make the jump
00:32:41.560 because they're afraid.
00:32:42.580 But then the schools shut down
00:32:43.840 and people were forced to.
00:32:47.100 The default was changed,
00:32:49.300 which is to say
00:32:50.300 the one thing
00:32:51.120 the public school
00:32:51.760 had going for it,
00:32:53.320 it's one sort of
00:32:54.700 defense mechanism
00:32:55.660 which is that
00:32:56.780 it was the default option
00:32:58.120 was taken away.
00:32:59.980 They gave it up.
00:33:00.580 They forfeited it.
00:33:02.040 And suddenly lots of parents said,
00:33:03.520 oh, you know,
00:33:03.900 actually I can do this.
00:33:05.880 It turns out I can do this.
00:33:07.040 I don't know what
00:33:07.380 I was so afraid of.
00:33:09.160 I don't need the system.
00:33:11.360 It's also, you know,
00:33:12.140 I've used this analogy before,
00:33:15.060 but it is very much like
00:33:16.320 if you, you know,
00:33:16.880 if you work at your job,
00:33:19.160 especially if you're kind of
00:33:20.140 a middle of the pack
00:33:21.320 sort of talent
00:33:22.760 and, you know,
00:33:24.760 you're not great
00:33:25.540 at your job,
00:33:26.680 maybe not terrible,
00:33:27.420 but you're not great
00:33:28.100 and maybe you're doing
00:33:30.900 a job that like
00:33:31.660 really doesn't need
00:33:32.360 to be done,
00:33:32.920 you're doing a lot
00:33:33.360 of busy work
00:33:34.100 and you don't really have
00:33:35.700 any kind of necessary
00:33:37.600 role in the company
00:33:38.420 and you're aware of that,
00:33:40.820 well, if you're in that boat,
00:33:43.720 it could be a dangerous thing
00:33:45.640 to take a lot of time
00:33:47.660 off of work.
00:33:48.140 Like you might not want
00:33:48.840 to go away on vacation
00:33:49.940 for two weeks.
00:33:50.660 You might want to make it
00:33:51.420 only a few days
00:33:52.100 because when you're gone,
00:33:54.540 everyone else is going
00:33:55.320 to look around
00:33:55.740 and they're going to realize,
00:33:56.360 oh, we actually don't need you.
00:33:57.520 Like we can,
00:33:58.300 we get,
00:33:58.740 oh, this person's gone.
00:33:59.540 We didn't even notice
00:34:00.260 they were gone.
00:34:02.680 And then when you come back,
00:34:03.900 there might not be a job
00:34:04.740 to come back to.
00:34:05.920 And I think that's what
00:34:06.640 happened with the public
00:34:07.060 school system.
00:34:07.500 A lot of people,
00:34:08.360 they kind of said,
00:34:09.680 oh, you know what?
00:34:10.220 We don't really need them.
00:34:13.160 I thought I did
00:34:13.900 because we just,
00:34:14.620 we always had them,
00:34:15.300 but now that they're gone,
00:34:16.140 we don't need them.
00:34:18.320 Okay, here's an article
00:34:19.140 from The Advocate.
00:34:20.300 Apparently,
00:34:20.780 I've been at the center
00:34:21.720 of a controversy
00:34:22.420 which has been raging
00:34:23.760 over the past week or so
00:34:25.440 that I was not aware of.
00:34:28.920 There have been articles written.
00:34:31.780 YouTubers have been responding
00:34:33.080 furiously to what I said.
00:34:35.800 I didn't even,
00:34:36.260 I didn't even know anything.
00:34:37.100 I didn't know they were mad.
00:34:38.280 I'm not surprised
00:34:38.960 they were mad
00:34:39.400 is something I said,
00:34:39.960 but I didn't even know about it.
00:34:40.980 I wasn't paying attention.
00:34:42.040 But here's The Advocate headline.
00:34:43.220 Matt Walsh's
00:34:44.460 homosexual infants remark
00:34:46.120 raises eyebrows
00:34:47.140 amid conversion therapy talk.
00:34:49.960 The article says,
00:34:50.860 Matt Walsh hosted
00:34:51.460 The Daily Wire's
00:34:52.200 The Matt Walsh Show
00:34:53.420 recently sparked an uproar
00:34:54.440 by expressing support
00:34:55.400 for conversion therapy,
00:34:56.700 challenging the widely accepted notion
00:34:58.120 that sexual orientation
00:34:59.080 is immutable.
00:35:01.660 Particularly controversial
00:35:02.760 were his remarks
00:35:03.460 concerning being born gay,
00:35:05.100 which he mocked,
00:35:05.920 according to a Media Matters
00:35:06.880 transcript published last month,
00:35:08.700 by suggesting the idea
00:35:10.780 implies the existence
00:35:11.740 of homosexual infants.
00:35:13.960 Quoting me,
00:35:14.520 if people are born gay,
00:35:15.680 like born gay,
00:35:16.420 you're gay from birth, right?
00:35:17.360 Well, that's what that would mean.
00:35:18.760 And then that means
00:35:20.040 that there are what?
00:35:21.440 Homosexual infants out there.
00:35:22.620 Again, no sane person
00:35:23.720 thinks that.
00:35:24.860 Walsh's comments
00:35:25.400 have been criticized
00:35:26.040 perpetuating harmful stereotypes
00:35:27.640 and misinformation
00:35:28.240 regarding the LGBTQ plus community.
00:35:31.760 His remarks come at a time
00:35:32.600 when a significant coalition
00:35:33.520 known as the United States
00:35:34.500 Joint Statement
00:35:35.520 is working tirelessly
00:35:37.760 to eradicate
00:35:38.520 the harmful practice
00:35:39.500 of conversion therapy.
00:35:41.740 The USJS,
00:35:42.900 comprising 28 influential
00:35:44.000 mental health
00:35:44.620 and medical organizations
00:35:45.280 in the United States,
00:35:46.120 has been making strides
00:35:46.880 in advocating
00:35:47.460 for the rights
00:35:48.100 of LGBTQ plus individuals.
00:35:51.020 Critics argue
00:35:51.600 that Walsh's comments
00:35:52.320 dismissed the substantial evidence
00:35:53.900 and the consensus
00:35:54.720 within the medical community
00:35:55.800 regarding the damaging impacts
00:35:57.320 of conversion therapy.
00:35:59.480 This practice,
00:36:00.100 aimed at changing
00:36:00.660 an individual's sexual orientation
00:36:01.760 or gender identity,
00:36:02.780 has been associated
00:36:03.480 with severe psychological trauma,
00:36:05.200 depression, anxiety,
00:36:06.080 and long-lasting
00:36:06.600 emotional distress.
00:36:07.840 Okay, a few things.
00:36:09.580 First of all,
00:36:11.260 a medical consensus
00:36:12.360 or a consensus
00:36:13.120 in the medical community,
00:36:14.200 it just doesn't mean
00:36:16.420 anything anymore.
00:36:17.380 Nobody cares.
00:36:19.000 And that's not my fault.
00:36:20.940 Okay, I wish that wasn't the case.
00:36:22.660 I wish we were not.
00:36:23.740 I wish that we lived
00:36:25.460 in a country
00:36:25.980 where when you hear the phrase
00:36:29.500 consensus in the medical community,
00:36:32.020 it really meant something.
00:36:34.380 I wish,
00:36:35.020 I deeply,
00:36:36.040 deeply wish
00:36:37.300 that we lived
00:36:38.040 in that kind of country.
00:36:39.800 I wish that we had
00:36:40.680 that kind of medical community
00:36:42.040 where if there was actually
00:36:44.100 a consensus among them
00:36:45.540 about something,
00:36:47.020 you could go,
00:36:47.920 oh, well, okay,
00:36:48.640 I guess it's,
00:36:49.620 well, that's pretty powerful.
00:36:51.700 Okay, I guess whatever
00:36:52.580 they're saying is good
00:36:53.840 because, you know,
00:36:55.100 if they all agree
00:36:55.860 these are the experts,
00:36:57.240 I wish that we could say that,
00:36:59.480 but we can't anymore.
00:37:01.540 We can't.
00:37:02.400 And so it doesn't,
00:37:04.020 it just doesn't mean anything.
00:37:05.260 And when people hear
00:37:05.880 about medical consensus,
00:37:06.920 they ignore it.
00:37:07.940 In fact, they laugh.
00:37:08.780 They don't just ignore it.
00:37:09.560 They laugh at it.
00:37:11.960 I know for people on the left
00:37:13.420 and in the media,
00:37:14.660 this is hard for you
00:37:15.620 to wrap your head around
00:37:16.700 because appeals to authority,
00:37:19.840 that's like your only move.
00:37:21.180 That's all you have.
00:37:22.180 You have ad hominem
00:37:23.080 and you have appeal to authority.
00:37:25.780 That's all you've got.
00:37:27.360 But what you have to realize
00:37:28.380 is that for normal people,
00:37:29.560 and not just right-wing radicals
00:37:32.940 like myself,
00:37:34.080 when they hear,
00:37:35.300 oh, there's a consensus
00:37:36.060 in the medical community,
00:37:36.780 they laugh at it
00:37:38.940 because we know
00:37:41.320 we can look
00:37:42.720 at recent examples
00:37:44.400 of things
00:37:45.980 that have, you know,
00:37:48.360 earned a consensus
00:37:49.540 in the medical community
00:37:50.500 and we know
00:37:51.320 that it's total nonsense.
00:37:54.220 There was a consensus
00:37:55.220 in the medical community
00:37:56.180 about the efficacy
00:37:57.020 of the vaccine,
00:37:58.140 for example,
00:37:58.720 and masks.
00:37:59.440 We all remember that.
00:38:00.480 There are a lot of,
00:38:01.360 there are many different
00:38:02.520 examples of a consensus
00:38:04.540 in the medical community
00:38:05.360 around COVID
00:38:05.900 that turned out
00:38:06.420 to be not correct.
00:38:09.620 There's a consent,
00:38:10.540 there's essentially,
00:38:12.080 there's wide agreements,
00:38:13.800 apparently,
00:38:14.180 in the medical community
00:38:15.000 that, you know,
00:38:18.220 that it can be a good idea
00:38:20.660 to chemically castrate kids.
00:38:24.720 There's also a quote-unquote
00:38:25.860 consensus about that.
00:38:27.880 Which is why the consensus
00:38:29.020 doesn't mean anything
00:38:29.780 to us.
00:38:31.800 Also, second,
00:38:32.520 my point about being born gay
00:38:33.840 absolutely still holds
00:38:35.540 and just scoffing at it
00:38:36.940 is not an argument.
00:38:38.980 The logic is simple, right?
00:38:41.280 If people are born gay,
00:38:42.540 as the left claims,
00:38:43.940 that means that they are
00:38:45.280 gay from birth.
00:38:47.100 Like, what am I missing here?
00:38:48.560 If you're born gay,
00:38:49.800 to be born something
00:38:51.340 is to be that thing
00:38:53.020 from birth.
00:38:54.300 If you're not that thing
00:38:55.440 from birth,
00:38:56.000 then you were not born it,
00:38:58.000 right?
00:38:59.360 And if you are gay
00:39:00.640 from birth,
00:39:01.280 if you are gay at birth,
00:39:02.660 from birth,
00:39:03.480 then that would mean
00:39:04.960 that there are
00:39:05.620 homosexual infants.
00:39:07.540 And if that concept
00:39:08.340 seems ridiculous to you
00:39:09.880 and disturbing
00:39:10.680 and just wrong,
00:39:13.200 and it should seem like
00:39:14.640 all those things
00:39:15.160 because it is,
00:39:16.340 then you apparently agree
00:39:18.620 that the whole idea
00:39:19.460 of being born gay
00:39:20.240 is inherently flawed
00:39:21.140 for that reason.
00:39:22.180 And finally,
00:39:23.900 you know,
00:39:24.080 I keep hearing about
00:39:24.780 the huge mounds of evidence
00:39:26.040 that, quote-unquote,
00:39:26.960 conversion therapy
00:39:27.800 is horrifically damaging
00:39:28.860 and harmful.
00:39:29.920 But I've never seen
00:39:31.100 any of this evidence
00:39:31.720 and that's because
00:39:32.200 the evidence doesn't exist.
00:39:33.280 Now, yes,
00:39:34.360 I think as I acknowledged
00:39:35.160 at the time
00:39:35.540 when we talked about this
00:39:36.100 the first time,
00:39:36.800 if you're talking about
00:39:37.780 some kind of
00:39:38.820 archaic, weird,
00:39:40.660 electroshock therapy thing
00:39:42.620 from the 50s,
00:39:44.340 back when psychiatrists
00:39:45.600 were giving electroshocks
00:39:46.560 to everybody for everything
00:39:47.800 because psychiatrists
00:39:48.960 have always just been
00:39:50.040 making crap up as they go,
00:39:52.080 which they're still doing now.
00:39:53.280 But if you're talking about that,
00:39:54.620 then, yeah,
00:39:56.000 that's bad.
00:39:57.400 But nobody is doing that.
00:40:00.120 Conversion therapy,
00:40:01.060 so-called,
00:40:01.660 in reality,
00:40:02.560 in practice,
00:40:03.220 what they call conversion therapy
00:40:04.500 usually just means
00:40:05.720 that somebody
00:40:07.280 with same-sex attraction
00:40:08.560 doesn't want to have
00:40:10.440 that attraction.
00:40:11.200 It causes them,
00:40:11.820 it disturbs them,
00:40:12.480 it causes them distress
00:40:13.360 and they're not happy with it
00:40:15.680 and so they seek counseling
00:40:17.040 about it.
00:40:19.260 That's what,
00:40:19.680 quote-unquote,
00:40:20.120 conversion therapy
00:40:20.860 is in practice.
00:40:21.740 And when you hear
00:40:22.240 about,
00:40:23.600 about,
00:40:25.940 you know,
00:40:26.300 when you hear these days
00:40:28.240 someone accused
00:40:29.320 of engaging
00:40:31.400 in conversion therapy,
00:40:32.320 that's what it is.
00:40:33.260 That's all it is.
00:40:35.660 And,
00:40:36.100 why shouldn't people
00:40:38.020 be able to do that?
00:40:39.020 I mean,
00:40:39.260 the left would have us believe
00:40:40.700 that it is valid
00:40:42.300 for a man
00:40:43.240 who doesn't want
00:40:43.900 to be a man
00:40:44.520 to seek counseling
00:40:46.220 in an effort
00:40:48.260 to become a woman
00:40:49.060 and yet
00:40:50.640 a gay person
00:40:52.020 who doesn't want
00:40:52.680 to be gay
00:40:53.120 should never
00:40:53.980 seek counseling
00:40:54.660 in an effort
00:40:55.680 to become straight.
00:40:58.640 And that doesn't make,
00:41:00.260 that dichotomy
00:41:01.400 is completely insane.
00:41:04.200 Okay?
00:41:04.540 It is totally crazy,
00:41:06.600 which is why
00:41:07.660 you can't defend it.
00:41:09.600 Okay?
00:41:10.140 Someone explained to me
00:41:11.360 how it could be possible
00:41:12.560 for a person
00:41:14.020 to change their sex,
00:41:15.360 how is it possible
00:41:16.320 that sex
00:41:17.020 is not immutable,
00:41:19.120 but sexual orientation
00:41:20.720 is?
00:41:22.960 Go ahead
00:41:23.660 and lay that out
00:41:24.340 for me.
00:41:25.660 You can't do it
00:41:26.680 because it's nonsense.
00:41:29.900 All right.
00:41:30.880 Let's see
00:41:31.460 how much time we have.
00:41:32.120 Okay,
00:41:32.240 we got to get to
00:41:32.920 the next segment,
00:41:34.260 but
00:41:34.440 before we do,
00:41:37.660 I've ruled on this issue
00:41:39.040 already in the past,
00:41:40.100 but it seems necessary
00:41:41.780 for me to speak up again
00:41:43.120 because it is shocking to me
00:41:45.780 how many people
00:41:46.680 are wrong about this,
00:41:47.940 how many people
00:41:48.520 don't understand
00:41:50.580 one of,
00:41:51.700 one of the
00:41:52.120 basic
00:41:53.640 rules of etiquette
00:41:55.160 and of life.
00:41:57.180 So here's a quick viral video
00:41:58.680 making the rounds right now.
00:41:59.860 It is an argument
00:42:00.960 on an airplane
00:42:01.820 over the issue
00:42:03.200 of reclining
00:42:04.120 your seat.
00:42:05.180 Let's watch.
00:42:07.040 The whole trip
00:42:07.900 she pushed my seat.
00:42:08.940 No, you seen it.
00:42:10.060 No, she didn't.
00:42:11.180 She put no.
00:42:11.980 I'm allowed
00:42:12.880 to put my seat back.
00:42:13.980 I'm allowed
00:42:14.600 to put my seat back.
00:42:16.400 I'm allowed
00:42:17.200 to put my seat back.
00:42:19.240 Okay.
00:42:20.520 So,
00:42:21.060 I don't know
00:42:21.520 where this video is from,
00:42:22.660 but it's making
00:42:23.420 the rounds right now.
00:42:24.180 I don't know
00:42:24.380 if it's recent or not.
00:42:25.060 I don't know
00:42:25.340 any other context behind it.
00:42:27.200 I don't know
00:42:27.460 who those people are.
00:42:28.600 But I think
00:42:29.060 we can assume
00:42:31.560 from the context
00:42:32.120 that this dispute
00:42:34.600 started
00:42:35.320 because the woman
00:42:35.900 was putting her seat back
00:42:37.060 and the guy
00:42:37.700 behind her
00:42:38.440 did not like that
00:42:39.580 and apparently
00:42:40.000 from what I read
00:42:40.700 he was kicking
00:42:41.580 the seat
00:42:41.800 or something.
00:42:44.020 So,
00:42:44.560 it is apparently
00:42:45.320 necessary,
00:42:46.140 as I did
00:42:46.640 on Twitter
00:42:46.920 this morning,
00:42:48.480 it's apparently
00:42:49.020 necessary for me
00:42:49.980 to stipulate,
00:42:51.340 once again,
00:42:52.280 you do not
00:42:53.080 recline your seat
00:42:54.080 in coach.
00:42:55.980 Okay?
00:42:56.640 If you want
00:42:57.580 the right
00:42:58.900 to recline your seat,
00:43:01.420 get a first class ticket.
00:43:03.020 You can recline
00:43:03.500 your seat
00:43:03.780 in first class.
00:43:04.820 Okay?
00:43:05.260 Because there's
00:43:05.680 enough room.
00:43:06.840 And you can recline
00:43:08.500 your seat
00:43:08.740 without impeding
00:43:09.540 the person
00:43:10.180 behind you.
00:43:13.220 And also,
00:43:14.880 there are practices,
00:43:15.320 like in first class,
00:43:16.100 for example,
00:43:17.000 the tray table,
00:43:18.100 most of the time,
00:43:19.240 is not attached
00:43:20.260 to the seat
00:43:21.020 in front of you.
00:43:22.040 Usually in first class,
00:43:23.080 they have the tray table
00:43:23.940 that comes out
00:43:24.560 of the armrest,
00:43:26.060 which means
00:43:26.680 that if the person
00:43:27.160 behind you
00:43:27.600 reclines a bit,
00:43:28.860 and you're trying
00:43:29.840 to eat your meal
00:43:31.980 on your tray table,
00:43:33.100 it's not going
00:43:33.700 to interfere.
00:43:35.300 But in coach,
00:43:36.460 the tray table
00:43:37.040 is attached
00:43:37.540 to the seat
00:43:37.960 behind you.
00:43:39.260 And so oftentimes,
00:43:39.900 if you have
00:43:40.400 a tray table down
00:43:41.120 and the person
00:43:41.560 reclines,
00:43:42.240 the tray table
00:43:42.680 is not even usable
00:43:43.320 anymore.
00:43:43.800 Can't use it.
00:43:45.380 And then there's
00:43:47.020 the leg room issue.
00:43:50.960 Okay?
00:43:51.440 You have like
00:43:52.240 two inches of leg room
00:43:53.400 to spare
00:43:54.040 if you're in coach.
00:43:56.040 You have barely any
00:43:57.100 leg room to begin with.
00:43:59.200 You've got maybe
00:43:59.920 two inches to spare.
00:44:01.480 And when I say
00:44:01.920 to spare,
00:44:02.500 I mean like
00:44:02.920 there's,
00:44:04.140 you might,
00:44:04.840 if you are,
00:44:05.660 yeah,
00:44:05.820 look,
00:44:06.120 if you're,
00:44:06.460 if you're a very
00:44:07.220 short person,
00:44:07.880 this might be
00:44:08.300 different.
00:44:09.580 But if you are
00:44:10.980 even average height
00:44:12.660 or slightly above
00:44:13.620 average height,
00:44:14.340 you've got where
00:44:15.860 your knee ends
00:44:16.720 and then you've got
00:44:17.300 maybe like two inches
00:44:18.560 before it's hitting
00:44:19.840 the seat in front of you.
00:44:21.420 If that person declines,
00:44:22.880 that room is gone now.
00:44:24.800 And now you,
00:44:26.020 your knee is wedged up
00:44:27.900 against that person's
00:44:29.080 reclined seat.
00:44:30.800 Just because,
00:44:31.920 and I don't want to hear,
00:44:33.560 as she's arguing,
00:44:35.180 I'm allowed to recline
00:44:36.280 my seat.
00:44:36.720 I'm allowed.
00:44:37.480 Yeah,
00:44:37.720 you're allowed to.
00:44:39.760 You're allowed.
00:44:40.080 There's no,
00:44:40.540 unfortunately,
00:44:41.140 there's no law
00:44:41.960 saying you can't,
00:44:42.920 there should be a law,
00:44:43.820 but there's not.
00:44:45.900 You're allowed to do
00:44:46.780 a lot of things
00:44:47.400 that you should,
00:44:48.020 you still shouldn't do.
00:44:49.940 That's what etiquette is.
00:44:52.180 There is not force of law
00:44:54.000 behind most rules of etiquette.
00:44:56.380 Again,
00:44:56.780 if I was in charge,
00:44:57.400 that it would be,
00:44:58.080 but I'm not,
00:44:59.520 unfortunately for everybody.
00:45:01.600 So,
00:45:01.920 but that doesn't,
00:45:02.540 that doesn't invalidate
00:45:03.940 the rule of etiquette.
00:45:05.580 There's no,
00:45:06.300 hey,
00:45:06.760 you're allowed
00:45:07.840 to walk in,
00:45:09.760 to walk through a door
00:45:11.260 and shut it
00:45:12.500 on the person behind you.
00:45:13.720 You're allowed to do that.
00:45:15.500 The door is,
00:45:16.760 you're able to do that.
00:45:19.460 Does that mean
00:45:20.160 you should do that?
00:45:21.180 Does that make it
00:45:21.680 not incredibly rude
00:45:22.980 to do that?
00:45:25.940 You know,
00:45:26.560 here's another analogy
00:45:27.400 for all the people
00:45:28.700 that say,
00:45:29.160 well,
00:45:29.520 the seats,
00:45:30.040 the seats can recline.
00:45:31.800 Like,
00:45:31.980 is that,
00:45:33.120 is that how simple
00:45:35.600 your mind is
00:45:36.400 that you say,
00:45:37.140 well,
00:45:37.300 it can do it,
00:45:38.060 so that means
00:45:38.560 I should do it.
00:45:40.640 Yeah,
00:45:41.080 it can do it,
00:45:41.760 but you shouldn't.
00:45:43.380 Just like
00:45:44.120 the vol,
00:45:45.340 take this,
00:45:47.120 maybe you live
00:45:47.600 in an apartment,
00:45:48.520 okay?
00:45:49.200 You have a TV.
00:45:50.580 You're allowed
00:45:51.140 to have a TV
00:45:51.660 in your apartment.
00:45:53.100 That TV
00:45:53.940 goes up
00:45:54.680 to a certain volume,
00:45:55.960 right?
00:45:56.220 It goes up
00:45:56.560 to volume 75
00:45:57.660 or whatever.
00:45:59.120 So,
00:45:59.700 you're allowed
00:46:00.100 to have a TV.
00:46:01.120 You're allowed
00:46:01.480 to be in your apartment.
00:46:03.160 The TV is,
00:46:04.020 you're able
00:46:04.700 to turn it
00:46:05.120 all the way up.
00:46:06.020 It has that capability,
00:46:07.780 but should you
00:46:09.700 put the TV
00:46:10.460 on full blast
00:46:11.620 so that you're
00:46:12.660 disturbing the people
00:46:13.540 who live around you?
00:46:14.880 No.
00:46:15.940 Even though you can,
00:46:17.780 even though
00:46:18.360 you're able to,
00:46:20.660 you still shouldn't
00:46:22.180 because it is rude
00:46:23.280 to the people
00:46:23.860 around you.
00:46:24.580 and when you
00:46:26.700 decide to recline
00:46:27.560 your seat
00:46:28.000 and coach,
00:46:28.820 you are making
00:46:29.680 the decision
00:46:30.580 to invade
00:46:32.260 the personal space
00:46:33.260 of the person
00:46:33.560 behind you
00:46:34.040 and to take
00:46:35.000 what little comfort
00:46:35.920 they had
00:46:36.560 away from them.
00:46:38.560 Okay?
00:46:38.740 And you're doing,
00:46:39.440 you're trying to
00:46:40.140 increase your comfort
00:46:41.260 by a little bit
00:46:42.020 by taking
00:46:44.040 the comfort away
00:46:45.480 from the person
00:46:45.860 behind you.
00:46:46.360 That is,
00:46:47.000 by definition,
00:46:47.680 a rude thing
00:46:48.860 to do.
00:46:50.320 All right.
00:46:51.840 Moving on.
00:46:52.380 Actually,
00:46:52.580 we're not going
00:46:52.880 to move on
00:46:53.280 because as we
00:46:53.940 move on
00:46:54.260 to the next
00:46:55.100 segment,
00:46:55.700 we will stay
00:46:57.360 on this very
00:46:57.940 important subject.
00:46:58.940 Let's get to that now.
00:47:03.280 Okay,
00:47:03.800 so as I mentioned,
00:47:05.060 we talked about this,
00:47:06.280 I want to say
00:47:09.980 I gave my opinion
00:47:10.880 on the leg room
00:47:11.960 or the seat
00:47:12.820 reclining issue.
00:47:13.600 I didn't give my opinion.
00:47:14.480 I stated what is a fact
00:47:16.480 on Twitter this morning
00:47:17.740 and shockingly,
00:47:22.160 a large percentage
00:47:23.460 of people
00:47:23.940 somehow are
00:47:25.080 disagreeing with me.
00:47:26.380 So I'll read a few
00:47:26.820 of these comments.
00:47:28.740 She's right,
00:47:29.420 Matt.
00:47:29.580 The reclining function
00:47:30.300 is there to be used.
00:47:31.400 You decide
00:47:32.000 or need to fly.
00:47:33.640 Bear with it.
00:47:34.480 That doesn't entitle
00:47:35.180 the person behind you
00:47:35.820 to push and kick
00:47:36.540 the seat in front.
00:47:37.860 Abby says,
00:47:39.020 seats recline
00:47:39.540 a tiny amount.
00:47:40.180 It's hardly noticeable
00:47:40.840 to either party.
00:47:42.420 Smooth Op says,
00:47:43.540 I'm putting my
00:47:44.140 back.
00:47:45.020 It is what it is.
00:47:46.320 I've paid for that seat
00:47:47.400 and all the amenities
00:47:48.220 that come with it.
00:47:50.520 Dr. Dre,
00:47:51.420 I don't know
00:47:51.660 if he's the one
00:47:52.400 and only,
00:47:52.980 says,
00:47:53.220 disagree.
00:47:53.640 It only reclines
00:47:54.260 about an inch
00:47:54.820 and the back table
00:47:55.660 is still usable.
00:47:57.940 Kara says,
00:47:59.200 these seats are designed
00:47:59.960 to be the smallest
00:48:00.620 possible to maximize
00:48:01.500 airline profits.
00:48:02.860 Why does logic
00:48:03.500 always elude you, Matt?
00:48:04.640 And Aaron says,
00:48:05.320 the seats only recline
00:48:06.020 a couple of inches,
00:48:06.680 stopping a drama queen.
00:48:08.180 Fly first class
00:48:08.920 if you really care
00:48:09.600 about leg room that much.
00:48:10.760 Okay.
00:48:12.060 Number one,
00:48:12.760 I do fly first class.
00:48:13.860 This is me.
00:48:14.420 I'm speaking up.
00:48:15.820 For the common man here.
00:48:17.180 Okay.
00:48:17.300 I'm speaking.
00:48:17.800 So I'm not even
00:48:18.540 personally affected
00:48:19.500 by this anymore.
00:48:20.440 But,
00:48:20.980 but even so,
00:48:22.160 I still,
00:48:23.620 it enrages me to know
00:48:25.420 that the people back there
00:48:27.760 are suffering in this way.
00:48:29.680 I almost want to
00:48:30.960 get my seat up for them.
00:48:32.620 Well,
00:48:32.940 no,
00:48:33.100 I would never do that.
00:48:33.860 But still,
00:48:34.440 I don't like to know
00:48:35.540 that this kind of,
00:48:36.860 that this rudeness
00:48:37.560 is happening.
00:48:38.160 And also,
00:48:39.000 because of the rudeness
00:48:39.660 that this great suffering
00:48:40.620 is happening as well.
00:48:42.200 Um,
00:48:43.120 it only reclines
00:48:43.840 a couple of inches.
00:48:44.580 That's true.
00:48:45.320 But once again,
00:48:46.480 there is only
00:48:47.460 a couple of inches
00:48:48.260 back there to spare
00:48:49.420 to begin with.
00:48:50.540 And so you're taking away
00:48:52.160 what,
00:48:52.820 what rightfully belongs
00:48:54.980 to the person behind you.
00:48:56.940 Now,
00:48:57.520 who's the ultimate villain
00:48:59.060 in all of this?
00:49:00.760 Is it the airline?
00:49:02.160 Yes,
00:49:02.520 I totally agree with that.
00:49:04.880 Okay.
00:49:05.400 The airlines,
00:49:06.120 they,
00:49:06.380 they're treating
00:49:07.040 their,
00:49:07.360 their passengers
00:49:08.100 like cattle,
00:49:09.040 basically just shoving
00:49:10.600 them back there.
00:49:12.080 And,
00:49:12.560 uh,
00:49:12.720 and then on top of it,
00:49:14.000 they have the recline function
00:49:16.420 on the seats,
00:49:17.060 which is insane.
00:49:17.820 Like,
00:49:18.160 why do you even have,
00:49:19.260 why are the seats
00:49:19.960 able to do that?
00:49:20.840 It's crazy.
00:49:22.720 So,
00:49:23.340 they are
00:49:24.940 to blame
00:49:25.740 ultimately for this.
00:49:27.280 But,
00:49:27.560 um,
00:49:27.960 look,
00:49:28.680 we get into the plane,
00:49:31.180 especially if we're
00:49:32.260 sitting back in coach,
00:49:34.160 you know,
00:49:34.800 as they said during COVID,
00:49:35.820 we're all in this together.
00:49:37.580 And,
00:49:38.020 uh,
00:49:38.360 and we should have
00:49:39.060 a lot more room.
00:49:39.760 We don't,
00:49:40.300 we shouldn't be treated
00:49:40.960 like cattle,
00:49:41.640 but we are.
00:49:43.680 And so,
00:49:44.440 we all just need to,
00:49:45.580 you know,
00:49:45.880 we just got to work together
00:49:46.660 a little bit.
00:49:47.220 Okay.
00:49:47.520 You don't very,
00:49:48.120 you don't very often hear me
00:49:49.160 with the kind of kumbaya message,
00:49:50.940 but this is one of those times.
00:49:53.740 And,
00:49:54.180 and usually when you see
00:49:55.300 these incidents on planes,
00:49:57.000 it's our,
00:49:57.380 it's our,
00:49:57.600 it's a high stress situation.
00:49:58.700 Traveling is high stress.
00:49:59.760 People are,
00:50:00.500 their nerves are,
00:50:01.160 are already frayed.
00:50:03.700 And,
00:50:04.160 uh,
00:50:04.300 and so you just got to,
00:50:05.260 just like basic,
00:50:06.720 etiquette,
00:50:08.060 basic politeness,
00:50:09.440 um,
00:50:10.400 be considerate to the people
00:50:11.520 around you in just real
00:50:12.940 basic,
00:50:13.640 small ways.
00:50:16.000 Uh,
00:50:16.580 and there's all,
00:50:18.060 you know,
00:50:18.420 if there's someone on the plane
00:50:19.780 that's not cooperating
00:50:21.160 with that program,
00:50:22.000 it just all hell breaks loose.
00:50:25.000 So that's it.
00:50:26.520 This should be the last time
00:50:27.800 that we have to talk about this.
00:50:30.080 The rule has been stated again.
00:50:32.340 You know the story,
00:50:34.160 but do you know the truth?
00:50:35.400 Convicting a Murderer,
00:50:36.180 the new 10-part docuseries
00:50:37.620 by Candace Owens and Daily Wire Plus
00:50:38.960 has done an excellent job
00:50:40.280 at convincing even the strongest
00:50:41.760 of Stephen Avery supporters
00:50:43.000 that he is guilty.
00:50:44.560 Candace has shed a light
00:50:45.500 on the manipulation by Hollywood
00:50:46.820 when depicting Stephen Avery's
00:50:48.140 involvement in the murder
00:50:49.180 of Teresa Halbach.
00:50:50.440 If you have not seen
00:50:51.420 the full series,
00:50:52.120 all episodes are now available
00:50:53.220 exclusively on Daily Wire Plus.
00:50:55.480 The final episode of
00:50:56.260 Convicting a Murderer
00:50:57.160 reveals who the real villains
00:50:58.320 of the story are,
00:50:59.220 Stephen Avery,
00:50:59.680 his family,
00:51:00.680 and the filmmakers
00:51:01.360 who portrayed him as innocent
00:51:02.760 and fooled millions of viewers.
00:51:04.900 Here's a teaser of the series.
00:51:06.360 Take a look.
00:51:07.840 I'm going to direct your attention
00:51:09.240 specifically to
00:51:10.860 October 31st of 2005.
00:51:15.840 You need to tell us about it
00:51:17.180 so we know you're telling us the truth.
00:51:19.380 So Steve stabs her first
00:51:20.760 and then you cut her neck.
00:51:23.400 We sat at her house
00:51:24.580 and waited for the garage door to open
00:51:26.060 hoping that she's coming back.
00:51:27.600 The garage door never opened.
00:51:31.320 It's almost as if she was murdered
00:51:33.840 and then murdered again
00:51:35.600 by these two documentary makers.
00:51:40.760 I love my sisters.
00:51:46.040 And I hope I love them, of course.
00:51:48.000 Well, you can binge all 10 episodes now,
00:51:53.560 but only if you're a Daily Wire Plus member.

00:52:00.520 Now let's get to our daily cancellation.
00:52:08.280 Well, if you keep track of the happenings
00:52:10.100 over at the American Ornithological Society,
00:52:12.700 as I'm sure you do,
00:52:13.860 then you already know
00:52:14.920 all about the momentous announcement
00:52:16.560 the organization made this week.
00:52:18.120 But if for some reason
00:52:18.840 you are not up to speed
00:52:19.860 on the latest developments
00:52:20.820 in the birdwatching community,
00:52:22.480 then you may be in the dark about this.
00:52:24.560 And in fact,
00:52:25.740 just now hearing
00:52:26.580 that there was some kind of significant event
00:52:28.520 in the ornithology space,
00:52:30.280 you're probably assuming
00:52:31.300 that a major bird-related breakthrough
00:52:33.440 has occurred.
00:52:34.220 Has the American Ornithological Society
00:52:35.720 discovered a new species of bird
00:52:37.240 that will redefine society's expectations
00:52:40.180 of what a bird can be?
00:52:42.400 Or maybe they identified
00:52:43.120 a new invasive bird
00:52:44.340 that's going to destroy all the crops
00:52:45.720 and bring about the end of civilization.
00:52:47.400 Perhaps there's something
00:52:47.960 more salacious happening
00:52:49.100 in the avian world.
00:52:50.300 Maybe Taylor Swift
00:52:51.140 is dating a famous birdwatcher.
00:52:53.300 Maybe she's dating a bird.
00:52:54.400 These are all logical guesses.
00:52:56.360 But that is where
00:52:57.000 the disappointment sets in.
00:52:58.400 It turns out
00:52:58.980 the big announcement
00:53:00.080 instead was this.
00:53:03.080 After more than two years
00:53:04.320 of deliberation,
00:53:05.220 this bird society
00:53:06.180 has decided
00:53:07.100 that at long last
00:53:08.480 they're going to decolonize
00:53:10.020 the hobby of birdwatching
00:53:11.720 in all related fields.
00:53:13.600 And they're going to do that
00:53:14.860 by changing the names
00:53:16.040 of a few dozen birds.
00:53:17.760 As USA Today reported
00:53:18.760 without the slightest hint
00:53:19.640 of irony or self-awareness,
00:53:20.800 quote,
00:53:21.420 dozens of birds to be renamed
00:53:23.060 in an effort to shun racism
00:53:24.400 and make science more diverse.
00:53:27.420 Now, after realizing
00:53:28.240 how absurd that headline was,
00:53:30.040 USA Today quickly changed it
00:53:31.460 later in the day.
00:53:32.620 And now the headline reads,
00:53:33.720 quote,
00:53:34.220 dozens of birds,
00:53:35.160 including ones named
00:53:35.900 after white supremacists,
00:53:37.240 are being renamed.
00:53:39.100 The article goes on
00:53:39.800 to explain that,
00:53:40.560 quote,
00:53:40.660 The society plans
00:53:41.820 to remove all human names
00:53:43.060 from the common names
00:53:43.940 for birds within its jurisdiction
00:53:45.340 to create a more inclusive
00:53:46.740 environment for people
00:53:47.620 of diverse backgrounds
00:53:48.600 interested in birdwatching
00:53:49.940 and ornithology.
00:53:51.080 The public process,
00:53:51.840 yet to be fully defined,
00:53:53.080 will include 70 to 80 birds
00:53:54.520 in the U.S. and Canada,
00:53:55.860 according to the society.
00:53:57.600 The New York Times
00:53:58.140 elaborated on the situation
00:53:59.180 with their own article,
00:54:00.040 quote,
00:54:00.500 Advocates of this change
00:54:01.440 believe that many English
00:54:02.480 common names for birds
00:54:03.460 are isolating and demeaning
00:54:04.940 reminders of oppression,
00:54:06.260 slavery, and genocide,
00:54:07.600 according to a petition in 2020
00:54:08.880 that was addressed
00:54:09.740 to the American
00:54:10.460 Ornithological Society.
00:54:12.980 The petition was written
00:54:13.600 by Bird Names for Birds,
00:54:15.300 an initiative founded
00:54:16.060 by two ornithologists
00:54:17.100 to confront the issue
00:54:18.460 of these bird names,
00:54:19.720 which it describes
00:54:20.480 as verbal statues.
00:54:22.940 So they're going to tear down
00:54:24.460 the verbal statues
00:54:25.360 just like they tore down
00:54:26.280 the actual statues,
00:54:27.900 and they'll make sure
00:54:28.460 that no bird is named
00:54:29.580 after a human,
00:54:30.500 at least not any white human,
00:54:32.240 and that means there will be
00:54:32.960 no more McCown's long spur.
00:54:35.020 That's a bird named
00:54:35.660 after John P. McCown,
00:54:36.900 who discovered it,
00:54:38.020 but John P. McCown
00:54:39.420 fought for the Confederacy,
00:54:41.020 and he didn't want
00:54:41.660 the Seminole Indians
00:54:42.420 to rule Florida,
00:54:43.380 so needless to say,
00:54:44.220 the name of that particular bird
00:54:45.860 needs to change.
00:54:47.000 The Scots Oriole
00:54:48.160 also needs a new identity
00:54:49.320 because it was named
00:54:50.040 after Winfield Scott,
00:54:51.360 who relocated Indians
00:54:52.720 in the 19th century
00:54:53.560 in the so-called
00:54:54.060 Trail of Tears,
00:54:55.400 and of course,
00:54:55.960 they're the birds
00:54:56.660 named for John James Audubon,
00:54:58.440 who basically created
00:54:59.420 the whole field
00:55:00.100 of modern ornithology,
00:55:01.440 and that needs to change as well
00:55:02.360 because he owned slaves.
00:55:04.120 That's a big problem
00:55:04.840 for the Audubon's Shearwater,
00:55:06.720 which is a bird
00:55:07.280 that lives off the coast
00:55:08.160 of the southern United States,
00:55:09.460 as I'm sure you know.
00:55:10.800 Now, it goes without saying,
00:55:11.580 of course,
00:55:11.860 that these bird names
00:55:13.120 have caused untold trauma
00:55:16.300 for bird watchers
00:55:17.640 and civilians alike.
00:55:19.300 It's impossible to know
00:55:20.400 just how many people
00:55:21.280 have collapsed in shock
00:55:22.660 and suffered heart attacks
00:55:23.800 after learning that,
00:55:24.660 you know,
00:55:25.600 a species of North American sparrow
00:55:27.520 was named after
00:55:28.300 an obscure Civil War general
00:55:29.680 or that a certain type of crow
00:55:31.720 bears the name
00:55:32.440 of a guy who owned slaves
00:55:33.600 265 years ago
00:55:34.920 or whatever.
00:55:36.500 But we also give less thought
00:55:37.980 to the birds themselves
00:55:38.980 who have for decades
00:55:40.560 been saddled
00:55:41.260 with these ostracizing names
00:55:42.860 and think about how difficult
00:55:43.780 that must be for them.
00:55:45.840 That's why the American
00:55:46.540 Ornithological Society
00:55:48.000 is getting rid of
00:55:48.880 these genocidal names
00:55:49.940 and instead using names
00:55:51.000 that describe
00:55:51.640 a bird's physical features.
00:55:54.080 Now, granted,
00:55:54.720 it's only a matter of time
00:55:55.800 before that becomes
00:55:56.680 a problem too.
00:55:57.600 Now, I can't think of any
00:55:58.680 reason why the name
00:56:00.620 Blackbird is racist,
00:56:02.280 but I'm sure somebody
00:56:03.140 will think of one.
00:56:04.280 It just may take a while.
00:56:05.940 Indeed, it took more than
00:56:06.740 two years for these bird experts
00:56:08.300 to make this decision
00:56:09.980 to rename all these birds
00:56:11.700 and they still haven't
00:56:12.840 renamed them, by the way.
00:56:14.340 They've just confirmed
00:56:15.300 that they're going to do it.
00:56:17.260 More than two years ago,
00:56:18.340 the Washington Post
00:56:18.860 published a deep dive
00:56:19.940 into the field of bird watching,
00:56:21.560 noting that many birds
00:56:22.380 carry a, quote,
00:56:23.280 racist legacy.
00:56:24.860 And now, two years later,
00:56:26.140 we have some results.
00:56:27.600 Almost.
00:56:28.680 This is how long
00:56:29.640 the process takes
00:56:30.640 to give birds
00:56:31.620 more politically correct names.
00:56:34.020 For comparison,
00:56:35.000 it took less than three weeks
00:56:36.400 to write the Declaration
00:56:37.420 of Independence.
00:56:38.940 But then again,
00:56:40.460 the Declaration of Independence
00:56:41.300 is not nearly as important
00:56:42.800 a document
00:56:43.340 as the Declaration
00:56:44.720 of Anti-Racist Bird Names
00:56:46.460 from the American
00:56:47.220 Ornithological Society.
00:56:49.200 Now, if you want to know
00:56:50.260 more about this
00:56:51.300 laborious process
00:56:52.440 of identifying
00:56:53.340 the racist birds,
00:56:54.420 and I'm sure you do,
00:56:55.940 I have a clip
00:56:56.980 from the American
00:56:58.220 Ornithological Society
00:56:59.440 meeting two years ago
00:57:00.680 where they first discussed
00:57:02.020 this issue.
00:57:03.360 The meeting was hosted
00:57:04.440 by a woman named
00:57:05.220 Amelia Juliet Demery,
00:57:06.760 who's a member
00:57:07.180 of the American
00:57:07.780 Ornithological Society's
00:57:08.720 Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
00:57:10.780 And yes,
00:57:11.620 the American Ornithological Society
00:57:13.180 really does have
00:57:14.580 a Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
00:57:16.380 I'm not making that up.
00:57:17.380 Somehow,
00:57:17.720 I'm not making any of this up.
00:57:19.400 Now, if you thought
00:57:20.020 that regular human
00:57:22.280 Diversity and Inclusion Committees
00:57:23.840 were useless,
00:57:24.560 well, wait till you get a load
00:57:26.300 of the Diversity and Inclusion
00:57:27.780 Committee for birds.
00:57:29.880 Actually, I must admit
00:57:30.740 that the video
00:57:31.640 of this bird diversity meeting
00:57:33.580 is two hours long,
00:57:34.920 and I was not committed enough
00:57:36.840 to endure more than
00:57:37.860 a very short snippet.
00:57:39.600 So I kind of just
00:57:40.580 started at a random timestamp
00:57:42.820 and watched for about 90 seconds,
00:57:44.640 and this is the part
00:57:46.180 that I saw.
00:57:47.000 Watch.
00:57:48.720 So I'm a professional communicator,
00:57:51.080 and talking about birds
00:57:53.080 like Bachman Sparrow
00:57:54.080 are really challenging
00:57:55.220 because it looks
00:57:56.880 like another sparrow.
00:57:57.980 Why should someone
00:57:58.700 that doesn't think
00:57:59.460 it's super cool
00:58:00.460 care about this
00:58:01.640 near-threatened species, right?
00:58:04.380 Well, if we could all
00:58:05.960 get excited about,
00:58:07.480 you know,
00:58:07.700 we have to do this
00:58:08.500 community education aspect
00:58:10.180 to this campaign
00:58:11.080 for it's now
00:58:12.180 the most awesome sparrow
00:58:13.660 instead of a sparrow
00:58:15.480 that represents
00:58:16.880 a Lutheran pastor
00:58:17.740 that talked about
00:58:18.500 white supremacy,
00:58:19.180 then that's really cool, too,
00:58:21.400 and maybe we can do
00:58:22.360 really cool art
00:58:23.360 and storytelling
00:58:24.100 and get the community involved
00:58:26.060 and talk about, again,
00:58:27.320 the threats and conservation
00:58:28.280 needs that birds have.
00:58:30.720 Maybe we can talk about
00:58:31.920 some of the stories
00:58:33.020 and experiences
00:58:33.860 that the bird community members
00:58:36.360 that aren't represented today
00:58:37.600 have with this bird
00:58:38.700 and all of the other ones.
00:58:40.300 I just think that
00:58:41.420 it's exciting
00:58:43.000 what our future could be,
00:58:45.260 especially because I think
00:58:46.420 the biggest opportunity
00:58:47.440 is that this could be
00:58:48.780 our chance
00:58:49.400 to have a concrete statement
00:58:52.360 say the tendrils
00:58:53.680 of all social justice
00:58:55.440 have reached to the point
00:58:56.600 of bird names
00:58:57.740 and we're going to do
00:58:58.980 something about it.
00:59:00.180 No, it won't end racism,
00:59:01.900 it won't fix colonialism,
00:59:03.000 but it's something
00:59:04.200 that we can do
00:59:05.160 right now today
00:59:06.440 as our community.
00:59:07.540 And the bird community
00:59:08.600 is so big.
00:59:10.380 The impact of this
00:59:11.580 could be massive.
00:59:12.660 That is the saddest video
00:59:16.260 I've ever seen
00:59:17.040 in my life.
00:59:18.020 I find it sad
00:59:18.840 on such a deep level.
00:59:20.700 It's hard to even express.
00:59:22.660 Now, a couple of things here.
00:59:24.960 I am not going to say anything
00:59:27.840 about the guy
00:59:28.840 on the lower right-hand corner.
00:59:31.400 I did just say something about him,
00:59:33.520 but I'm not going to say anything else.
00:59:34.560 All I will say
00:59:36.960 is that he's exactly
00:59:38.000 what you imagine
00:59:38.880 when you hear
00:59:39.580 that bird watchers
00:59:40.600 have a diversity
00:59:41.860 and inclusion committee.
00:59:43.360 Somehow that guy
00:59:44.300 in particular
00:59:44.940 manifests in your mind
00:59:46.760 before you even see him.
00:59:50.160 And that's all I'm going to say.
00:59:53.820 Also, this fact
00:59:55.220 may interest only me,
00:59:56.180 but I want you to know
00:59:56.940 that the title of this video
00:59:58.080 on YouTube
00:59:58.440 is AOS Community Congress
01:00:00.200 on English Bird Names.
01:00:02.480 It is, as mentioned,
01:00:03.440 two hours long.
01:00:04.180 It's been on YouTube
01:00:04.760 for two years
01:00:05.380 and it has 1,700 views
01:00:06.580 and it's monetized.
01:00:08.420 They are running ads
01:00:09.400 on that video.
01:00:10.640 I don't know
01:00:11.000 what profit potential
01:00:11.860 they thought this content had,
01:00:14.060 but I hope that it lived up
01:00:15.220 to those expectations.
01:00:16.180 In any case,
01:00:16.880 this is big stuff,
01:00:18.660 the lady says.
01:00:19.280 This is massive.
01:00:20.600 This is major.
01:00:21.700 They are changing bird names.
01:00:24.460 Sure, sure,
01:00:25.520 she acknowledged
01:00:26.140 it won't end racism.
01:00:28.060 It won't fix colonialism.
01:00:29.960 It won't usher
01:00:30.920 in a progressive utopia
01:00:32.120 on its own.
01:00:32.980 It will only get us
01:00:33.680 like 95%
01:00:35.200 of the way there.
01:00:36.560 To get us the rest
01:00:37.240 of the way,
01:00:37.540 we're going to have to
01:00:37.960 rename a bunch of racist
01:00:39.000 insects and bugs too.
01:00:41.320 But that would require
01:00:41.940 those slackers
01:00:42.680 and the entomological society
01:00:44.000 to get their act together
01:00:44.820 finally and confront
01:00:45.760 this problem
01:00:46.280 and it's about time
01:00:47.220 for that.
01:00:48.080 But the bird lady
01:00:48.800 did say one thing
01:00:50.260 worth thinking about.
01:00:51.300 She said,
01:00:52.300 with great pride,
01:00:54.200 that the tendrils
01:00:55.120 of social justice
01:00:56.260 have reached bird names.
01:00:58.580 That is, indeed,
01:00:59.520 how pervasive
01:01:00.560 wokeness has become.
01:01:02.080 It has reached
01:01:02.520 into every corner
01:01:03.560 of society
01:01:04.240 and infected
01:01:05.200 every institution,
01:01:06.740 even organizations
01:01:07.620 of bird watchers.
01:01:09.620 The revolution
01:01:10.660 demands
01:01:11.280 total compliance
01:01:12.540 everywhere.
01:01:13.460 Among everyone,
01:01:14.820 even birds
01:01:15.600 are not exempt.
01:01:16.920 Everything must be
01:01:17.680 brought into conformity.
01:01:19.180 Everything must be
01:01:20.100 changed,
01:01:20.780 redefined,
01:01:21.560 renamed.
01:01:22.800 That is the dark reality
01:01:24.700 underpinning
01:01:25.380 this otherwise absurd
01:01:26.740 and unintentionally
01:01:28.040 hilarious story.
01:01:29.360 But we don't need
01:01:30.020 to focus on that
01:01:30.720 for now.
01:01:31.560 Instead,
01:01:31.920 let's just point
01:01:33.260 and laugh at this
01:01:34.080 because sometimes
01:01:34.880 that's all you can do
01:01:36.780 or should do.
01:01:38.120 And we can also say
01:01:39.300 to the American
01:01:40.360 Ornithological Society
01:01:41.580 what I never thought
01:01:42.780 we'd have to say
01:01:43.340 to the American
01:01:44.020 Ornithological Society
01:01:45.100 because, frankly,
01:01:46.080 I never thought
01:01:46.580 we'd have to say anything
01:01:47.460 to the American
01:01:48.160 Ornithological Society.
01:01:50.020 You are today
01:01:50.980 canceled.
01:01:52.900 And that'll do it
01:01:53.500 for the show today.
01:01:54.520 Thanks for watching.
01:01:55.020 Thanks for listening.
01:01:55.860 Talk to you tomorrow.
01:01:56.740 Godspeed.
