00:02:36.580 no delivery people showed up to work at the location where I ordered.

00:02:40.940 And he had to be called in from a different location to pick up the slack because there were none at that location.

00:02:45.920 This experience would be just a minor inconvenience and not worth discussing or telling you about.

00:02:52.480 Plus, I used to be a pizza delivery guy back in my younger days.

00:02:56.080 So I tend to give a lot of leeway.

00:03:04.160 The problem is that this is symptomatic of a much larger problem, which can be seen and felt all across the country.

00:03:11.580 The worker shortage crisis is especially pronounced in the restaurant and hospitality industries,

00:03:16.420 which means that I've encountered it quite a bit with all the traveling we've done in recent months.

00:03:20.720 Almost no hotels anywhere have enough housekeepers on staff to keep the rooms clean.

00:03:24.680 And that's a fact that hotels will tell you now as part of the standard spiel upon check-in where they tell you,

00:03:30.660 well, we're not going to send in housekeepers.

00:03:31.920 If you really need something, you can call us and we'll try to send somebody up to you.

00:03:35.160 Room service is now almost entirely a thing of the past.

00:03:37.740 Not enough workers to keep it going.

00:03:39.620 This is not just anecdotal either.

00:03:41.320 Here's a report from Vox today.

00:03:43.280 It says employers in almost every industry say they're struggling to find workers,

00:03:47.100 but the situation is especially severe in the leisure and hospitality sector.

00:03:50.320 While workers in these industries are getting paid more than ever,

00:03:53.220 it still doesn't seem like enough.

00:03:55.500 Bars, restaurants, and hotels across the country are posting signs advertising open jobs

00:04:00.140 or asking customers to be patient since they don't have enough staff.

00:04:02.960 In August, the latest available month for openings and turnover data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics,

00:04:08.560 there were a near record 1.7 million open jobs in leisure and hospitality,

00:04:14.060 10% of all jobs in the sector, and a record of nearly a million people quitting.

00:04:18.060 And this is happening, again, as it said right there, while wages are higher than they've ever been.

00:04:25.580 Now, this may be an especially significant issue in the leisure and hospitality industries,

00:04:30.200 but the situation isn't much better in most other industries.

00:04:33.740 Big question is, why is this happening?

00:04:37.580 What do we do about it?

00:04:39.220 And as far as that goes, there are a number of important factors that can't be ignored.

00:04:42.600 One of them is vaccine mandates.

00:04:44.080 I mean, that's not helping.

00:04:45.480 That's driven some employees out of their positions or kept qualified applicants away to begin with.

00:04:51.660 But that's not the primary issue here, especially because this is a problem that predates most of these mandates.

00:04:59.420 The greater issue seems to be that a large and troubling amount of Americans

00:05:03.500 have decided that they don't want to work at all.

00:05:07.000 And government has made that lifestyle feasible for them.

00:05:11.280 It has made that an actual lifestyle choice, something that you can select from the menu of options.

00:05:16.700 One of them is, I'm not going to work.

00:05:19.820 So here's the Daily Wire.

00:05:21.200 It says, a new analysis argues that government welfare policies encourage able-bodied men to opt out of the labor force.

00:05:27.920 Many point to weak wage growth, technological change, or international trade as potential explanations for the low labor force participation rate

00:05:35.000 among young men, which has dropped from 97% in 1955 to 89% in 2020.

00:05:40.840 However, Republicans on the Joint Economic Committee argue in their Reconnecting Americans to Benefits of Work report

00:05:46.200 that a significant share of the young men who receive handouts from the government are voluntarily disconnected from work.

00:05:51.800 It says, only 12% of inactive, prime-age, able-bodied men said they wanted a job or were open to work.

00:05:59.580 Only 12% among men who are inactive for reasons other than disability, retirement, education, or homemaking.

00:06:06.020 41% personally receive government assistance.

00:06:08.760 One key piece of evidence that suggests labor force trends are driven largely by workers, not employers,

00:06:12.640 is that the decline in prime-age labor force participation has been mostly voluntary, as told by the men themselves.

00:06:18.940 Three out of four disconnected men say they do not want a job.

00:06:23.700 Three out of four.

00:06:25.220 And only 12% of inactive, prime-age, able-bodied men said they wanted a job or were open to it in 2014.

00:06:31.560 If more men are genuinely choosing to stay home with the kids, go to school, or retire early,

00:06:35.360 policymakers should not be concerned.

00:06:37.340 But that's not the full explanation here.

00:06:40.360 The report goes on to explain how welfare programs, especially those without work requirements,

00:06:44.420 or with work requirements that are easy to fulfill, even without actually trying to find work.

00:06:50.680 You know, you just got to put in the application, show up for the interview, not put in any effort,

00:06:55.340 and you can keep the benefits rolling.

00:06:57.780 The report says, well, that's largely at fault here.

00:07:00.780 Keep in mind that this only tells us about the trends leading up to our current state of affairs.

00:07:06.900 It doesn't factor in the COVID-related handouts, which enabled millions of additional people to stay home for months on end,

00:07:13.840 many of whom have shown no particular desire to return to the working world.

00:07:18.380 The end result leads to a lot more than pizzas being delivered cold and hotel towels not being changed.

00:07:24.940 What lies at the bottom of this flight from work, this rejection of work, I think, is despair and purposelessness.

00:07:33.920 This is both the cause and the effect.

00:07:37.800 So it's a self-perpetuating problem.

00:07:40.000 It's a cycle, vicious cycle.

00:07:42.580 People don't see any real purpose to their existence.

00:07:46.300 They don't see any reason to live.

00:07:48.300 And so they're happy to merely exist, floating by, desiring only to be made comfortable and kept entertained.

00:07:56.360 Now, it's not that getting a job delivering pizzas would itself give your life purpose.

00:08:04.120 That's not the point.

00:08:05.500 It's that working to provide for yourself and your family, if you have one, is what you do when you have intention and purpose in your life.

00:08:13.620 If you have goals, if you have ambition, you would rather get a job, even a menial job,

00:08:18.600 and then get at least one foot on at least the first rung of the ladder.

00:08:23.560 There's also value in work for its own sake.

00:08:25.960 Work is a necessary part of life.

00:08:27.700 As I've explained before, life is work.

00:08:30.240 Your existence requires work to maintain.

00:08:32.640 There's no getting around that.

00:08:35.360 And if you're not going to do it, then someone else will have to do it for you.

00:08:40.720 But there is dignity and honor in standing at the helm and steering your own ship,

00:08:45.980 rather than having the government do it, or more precisely, having the government enlist the taxpayers to do it,

00:08:51.440 against their will.

00:08:52.500 But the catch-22 here is that people in despair who could most benefit from the dignity of work

00:08:59.680 are also least likely to care about something like dignity or to pursue it for its own sake.

00:09:06.480 So that is the problem that lies at the bottom of this, and this is what we need to be talking about.

00:09:10.260 We can look at all the economic factors.

00:09:14.200 We can look at wages and wage growth.

00:09:16.800 All of these things.

00:09:20.600 That's really window dressing on the real problem, which lies at the foundation of all of this,

00:09:26.600 is that we have millions of people, not just young men, but lots of young men especially,

00:09:34.440 who are content, who are fine with staying at home, watching TV, on the internet, playing video games, whatever.

00:09:44.400 As far as they're concerned, that could be their entire life,

00:09:48.560 and they have no desire for anything beyond that, anything greater than that.

00:09:51.960 That's what we need to start speaking to, is that despair and hopelessness

00:09:58.840 that's in the hearts of so many Americans.

00:10:05.980 none of these things are going to get any better.
