00:04:04.480 discussed the origin of COVID-19 with Fauci and Collins.

00:04:08.300 Okay, now we already knew from previously released emails

00:04:10.920 that many of the leading scientists, virologists, epidemiologists in the world

00:04:16.100 suspected early on that this virus was engineered in a Chinese lab.

00:04:20.680 Now, that was also obvious to any common-sense person based simply on the fact that it came out of Wuhan,

00:04:26.720 right where a virus lab happened to be situated.

00:04:30.260 Now, that's not conclusive proof in and of itself, but if you see smoke and then you also see fire,

00:04:37.380 it probably is safe to assume that the smoke is coming from the fire.

00:04:40.900 But the scientists who looked at this had more than just common-sense assumptions to go on.

00:04:46.260 They inspected the virus itself and they could tell based on its features

00:04:50.060 that it probably didn't come from a bowl of bat soup.

00:04:54.700 Yet many of these very same scientists changed their tune rather suddenly

00:04:59.360 and began denouncing the lab leak theory that they themselves had speculated about.

00:05:07.780 The new details reveal that Dr. Fauci was warned of two things.

00:05:13.820 One, the potential that COVID-19 leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

00:05:18.180 And two, the possibility that the virus was intentionally genetically manipulated, lawmakers wrote.

00:05:23.780 According to the transcripts released by GOP staff,

00:05:26.420 both Collins, the former director of the National Institute of Health,

00:05:29.980 and Fauci, the current director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases,

00:05:33.740 were told by prominent scientists that the lab leak origin of COVID-19 was scientifically plausible.

00:05:40.000 Now, there are a bunch of emails, but one of the most important is from a guy named Dr. Jeremy Farrar

00:05:44.540 to Fauci, Francis Collins, and another NIH official named Lawrence Tabic.

00:05:49.100 And this is summarizing a conference call involving all of these men.

00:05:54.660 The blaze says, quote,

00:05:57.140 Farrar noted that Dr. Michael Farzan, a Scripps research professor of immunology

00:06:02.060 and the discoverer of SARS receptor, was, quote, bothered by the furin site

00:06:06.640 and has a hard time explaining that as an event outside the lab.

00:06:11.140 The furin site is part of the cell, and I mean, it's scientific stuff I don't understand.

00:06:15.040 I don't need to understand it.

00:06:15.940 It says the email is referring to the furin cleavage site of the COVID-19 virus spike protein,

00:06:22.840 a unique feature of the virus that makes it infectious.

00:06:25.460 He said that this evidence means it's highly unlikely that the virus developed naturally.

00:06:30.900 A different scientist on the same call, a microbiologist,

00:06:34.580 said that there was, quote, no plausible natural scenario.

00:06:38.440 No plausible natural scenario for this virus to go from bats to humans.

00:06:42.700 And yet, as the blaze reports, quote,

00:06:46.600 Regardless of these arguments, Collins wrote back to Farrar, Fauci, and Tabic later that day

00:06:53.400 coming around to the view that a natural origin is more likely,

00:06:56.940 appearing to agree with arguments presented by Ron Focciar,

00:07:00.640 a Dutch scientist that famously authored a controversial gain-of-function study,

00:07:04.420 and Christian Drosgen, Germany's leading COVID-19 expert.

00:07:08.140 Focciar, in a February 2nd email thanking conference call participants for having the meeting,

00:07:13.740 referred to the lab leak hypothesis as a conspiracy theory and said it would, quote,

00:07:18.560 need to be supported by strong data beyond a reasonable doubt.

00:07:22.720 Quote, it's good that this possibility was discussed to detail with a team of experts.

00:07:26.420 However, further debate about such accusations would unnecessarily distract top researchers

00:07:30.900 from their active duties and do unnecessary harm to science in general and science in China in particular.

00:07:39.040 Collins said that he agreed with Farrar's view that, quote,

00:07:41.880 a swift convening of experts in a confidence-inspiring framework is needed,

00:07:46.700 or the voices of conspiracy will quickly dominate doing great potential harm to science

00:07:51.860 and to international harmony.

00:08:35.560 They both went on publicly to denounce it as a crazy, possibly racist conspiracy theory.

00:08:40.940 The corporate media picked up this line, as did many high-ranking elected Democrats.

00:08:49.900 All of this happened, even though, as we know now,

00:08:54.640 some of the leading scientists in the world, scientists that Fauci worked with,
