Over the weekend, I was callously attacked in a YouTube video by a notorious far-right extremist by the name of Ben Shapiro.
00:00:07.020
Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? Stop it for a second. Just stop it. That's so... Oh my god. Oh my god.
00:00:12.300
Ben waged this brutal cyber assault against me because of a recent video of mine where I listed the top five most overrated movies of all time.
00:00:22.060
And Ben decided to issue a rebuttal to my list, even though I explicitly say at the beginning of my original video that my list is incontrovertibly correct and is not up for discussion.
00:00:32.760
Did Ben not hear that disclaimer? What part of not up for discussion did you not understand, Ben?
00:00:41.600
Now, there's not enough time for me to explain my list in detail again. You can go to that video and hear it for yourself.
00:00:47.440
Just to briefly summarize, the top five most overrated films of all time, as declared by me and by science, are Shawshank Redemption, Toy Story, The Dark Knight, the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, and all of the Star Wars films, including and especially the originals.
00:01:07.340
Area is sanitized. All targets destroyed. Solid copy. No movement detected.
00:01:21.280
Now, some people have speculated that the whole reason I made this list and singled out those particular movies was solely to troll Ben Shapiro.
00:01:30.500
That is the wild conspiracy theory floating out there on the internet.
00:01:33.840
But I ask you this. Do I seem like the kind of guy who would take the time to record a video just to troll someone?
00:01:41.860
Am I so petty and contrarian and immature that I would make a video designed solely to annoy and antagonize one of the owners of the company I work for?
00:01:52.960
I think we all know the answer to that question.
00:01:54.740
Now, today I want to respond to this unprovoked assault and onslaught from someone who I thought was a friend.
00:02:03.900
I'm not going to even acknowledge his rebuttal to my points about Toy Story, Shawshank Redemption, Star Wars, or Marvel.
00:02:10.820
Frankly, I'm so obviously correct about all those films that it would be almost insulting to the viewer for me to bother defending the point.
00:02:16.820
My arguments were expressed so eloquently and presented with such striking lucidity and depth of analysis that it would be pointless to elaborate.
00:02:25.180
It would be like asking Michelangelo to recreate the Statue of David.
00:02:28.560
He could do it, certainly, but why should he waste his time repeating himself?
00:02:32.780
Instead, I'm going to focus only on Ben's response to my arguments against the Dark Knight.
00:02:43.220
He told me he watches the movie once a week and weeps each time.
00:02:48.000
He didn't say that specifically, but I read between the lines.
00:02:50.840
The point is that he loves the movie, and that probably explains why his response on this movie in particular was so vicious and so hurtful.
00:03:07.400
It just isn't the masterpiece that people make it out to be.
00:03:10.260
Without Heath Ledger's great performance, this movie wouldn't be remembered for anything in particular.
00:03:15.400
Oh, you mean one of the key roles in the film is actually crucial to the film?
00:03:19.940
Truly one of the stupidest arguments I have ever heard, Matt.
00:03:22.940
Without the Academy Award-winning Best Villain in Film History in the film, it's a different movie.
00:03:32.360
You know, the New Testament without Jesus, not nearly as good.
00:03:40.720
It's great by Batman movie standards, but it's not great as a piece of cinema.
00:03:47.340
Okay, first of all, Ben, please watch The Language.
00:03:59.500
Third, yeah, you really understood my argument, didn't you?
00:04:01.960
I'm not saying that if you take the Joker character out of the film, it's not a great film anymore.
00:04:07.580
You would be correct to point out that any film is bad if you take out its most compelling characters.
00:04:12.700
I'm saying that the Joker character is actually not that great.
00:04:16.640
Heath Ledger's performance of the character elevates it beyond what it would otherwise be.
00:04:21.500
The Joker in the script is kind of hokey and corny.
00:04:24.740
The Joker that Heath Ledger creates in spite of the film and the script is compelling.
00:04:29.640
One of the Joker's first lines in the film, I think his first line, is, whatever doesn't kill you only makes you...
00:04:41.780
That is not the kind of line you find in a cinematic masterpiece.
00:04:44.360
In fact, if that line is in your movie, it's not a masterpiece.
00:04:51.240
But Ledger managed to deliver that line in a way that disguised its corniness.
00:04:56.700
Compare this to, say, Vito Corleone in The Godfather.
00:04:59.480
Obviously, Marlon Brando's performance in the role is legendary,
00:05:02.220
but the character was so brilliantly written and the film around him so incredible
00:05:05.060
that it would have still been a great film with another capable actor in the role.
00:05:09.800
Without that one performance, not the character, the performance,
00:05:13.100
the film would not be remembered for anything, actually.
00:05:16.640
Also, the Joker is not the greatest villain in cinema history.
00:05:18.920
That title belongs unquestionably to Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men.
00:05:22.640
He is both more menacing and more interesting than the Joker.
00:05:25.180
There's not one scene in The Dark Knight that even comes close to matching,
00:05:28.160
even just the gas station scene in No Country for Old Men.
00:05:31.100
And Joker in The Dark Knight never had one line that matches Anton Chigurh's
00:05:35.080
immortal question posed to Woody Harrelson's character.
00:05:37.780
If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what is was the rule.
00:05:41.660
So he conveyed the Joker's philosophy far more effectively
00:05:44.640
and in a much more clever way than the Joker ever did.
00:05:47.360
Look, we all know how Christmas season goes these days.
00:05:50.020
The stores put up their decorations in October.
00:05:52.120
Corporations try to sell you on their version of holiday spirit.
00:05:54.760
Before you know it, you're stressed out, overwhelmed,
00:05:56.620
completely missing the actual point of the season.
00:05:58.820
That's why I want to talk to you about something actually meaningful.
00:06:04.380
We're supposed to prepare our hearts through prayer and reflection.
00:06:07.600
Between the shopping frenzies and social obligations,
00:06:11.700
That's exactly why I've partnered with Halo for their Advent Pray 25 Challenge.
00:06:17.960
But this isn't about checking boxes or following some corporate wellness trend.
00:06:21.440
This is about reclaiming what Advent is actually supposed to be about.
00:06:24.680
They've put together their best Advent program yet with daily guided prayer sessions,
00:06:28.560
authentic Advent music, not the commercialized Christmas songs you'll hear at the mall in
00:06:32.120
November, and content specifically designed to help you grow in your faith during this
00:06:36.620
Right now, you can join me and thousands of others who are choosing to take back Advent
00:06:41.960
Just go to halo.com slash Walsh to get started.
00:06:49.060
Let's actually prepare our hearts for Christmas this year instead of just our shopping carts.
00:06:53.080
How does the Joker wire an entire hospital with enough explosives to demolish it in 15
00:07:03.060
People are in it 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
00:07:07.080
It's not even just like one part of it explodes.
00:07:11.660
His critique is like the practicality of wiring a building to explode.
00:07:17.200
They have a literal insane asylum where they keep people and every five minutes people
00:07:30.540
I mean, not that I would have committed a criminal act like the Joker, but I don't feel
00:07:33.680
You don't think it'd be hard to wire the entire hospital to explode?
00:07:37.220
Do you know how many explosives will be needed to blow up an entire hospital?
00:07:45.240
I started to Google it, but then I realized that I might be putting myself on an FBI watch
00:07:51.600
Of course, I'm probably already on an FBI watch list.
00:07:54.160
In any case, this is a massive demolition project that would take many hours to complete.
00:07:58.520
Even with lax security, it just isn't close to realistic.
00:08:01.100
Now, I know you might say, well, it's a Batman movie.
00:08:05.160
You can't tell me that it's this gritty, mature, Oscar-worthy Batman film, but then
00:08:09.160
also insist that it's just a silly superhero flick, so it doesn't matter if it's not believable.
00:08:14.680
You can't just hide behind Gotham City as a show.
00:08:22.460
Now, the movie hopes that you won't notice that problem because you'll be distracted
00:08:25.200
by, like, the moment in the hospital when Joker shows up in Two-Face's room wearing
00:08:30.300
a surgical mask and isn't noticed by Two-Face until he takes the mask off.
00:08:35.040
But even with the mask on, you can still tell that he has white face paint and black
00:08:40.000
So how did Two-Face, the criminal genius, not notice that?
00:08:42.600
Well, maybe it's because Two-Face isn't a criminal genius in this.
00:08:45.020
He's a villain for about a half a scene, and then he's dead.
00:08:48.180
It's like Christopher Nolan forgot to include Two-Face.
00:08:52.040
It's like a week, and the movie's going to come out, and someone says, well, we forgot.
00:09:08.740
The entire plot point in the film is that Two-Face is supposed to be a representation
00:09:16.780
He goes from the hero to the villain, and the whole point is that all hopes for sort of
00:09:25.680
And if you have too much of an idealistic view about what humanity is, which is what
00:09:30.880
Harvey Dent has for most of the movie, then you end up falling, because once you fall,
00:09:48.540
Christopher Nolan, again, demonstrating his profound understanding of the human condition
00:09:51.600
with this insight that my five-year-old daughter could offer.
00:09:54.580
Yes, I understand that Harvey Dent had an idealistic view of humanity and then ends up becoming
00:10:00.820
Nolan beats you over the head with that message over and over again.
00:10:03.360
The whole movie is just Christopher Nolan bashing you in the skull with a two-by-four, screaming
00:10:09.280
Each character takes turn giving speeches for the entire movie.
00:10:13.280
The whole movie is just one speech after another.
00:10:18.600
Now, the problem is that the characters spend so much time giving speeches that they forget
00:10:23.280
Harvey Dent flips like a switch from super good guy to super bad guy with almost no runway
00:10:27.960
Not to mention those burns on his face would be fatal, okay?
00:10:34.240
There's just no way somebody survives having half of their head melted away.
00:10:39.080
Okay, Nolan was so obsessed with having everything look realistic that he actually ended up with
00:10:43.280
a two-face that was less realistic than the one from the cartoons.
00:10:47.140
In fact, I would go so far as to say that the Batman animated series from the 90s not only
00:10:51.680
had a far superior two-face character, but was all around in every way a superior product
00:10:56.600
Indeed, I would also say the 90s cartoon Batman is the best thing Mark Hamill ever did.
00:11:01.240
I can't think of a single other thing Mark Hamill starred in that would match the Batman cartoon.
00:11:06.540
These are not just opinions that I'm coming up with right now on the spot to annoy you
00:11:09.340
even more, or if they are, I also think that they might be kind of true.
00:11:15.560
I don't want to make the same mistake Christopher Nolan made in The Dark Knight by repeating
00:11:20.320
I don't want this segment to run long like The Dark Knight did at a punishing run at runtime
00:11:25.520
There is no excuse for a movie about a superhero in a rubber costume running around doing karate
00:11:31.360
against the bad guys to go longer than 85 minutes.
00:11:37.560
The additional hour consisted of each character delivering the State of the Union address.
00:11:41.440
It's 90 minutes of story and an hour of speeches.
00:11:44.340
That's why I could even argue that Batman Forever starring Val Kilmer was better than The Dark Knight.
00:11:49.060
At least it got to the point much quicker and it had a better two-face.
00:11:54.620
I am still in shock that after all this time working together, you would attack me so savagely.
00:12:00.320
I'm both horrified and offended by this unprovoked assault.
00:12:06.200
Your video was the most disappointing thing I've seen since The Dark Knight.
00:12:11.420
And that is why both The Dark Knight and you, Ben Shapiro, are today canceled.
00:12:21.480
By the way, Ben Hazard and you, Ben Shapiro, are today in jail.
00:12:34.540
We have a great experience with dealing with siendo Υοιкая entrega.
00:12:36.300
We drive out more than just as patriots and pollenivals we get over from St. M 광?
00:12:40.640
At least one new Propelrose is alive but for winter's days you, Josh.
00:12:42.560
We are here in jail maybe looking forward to something else happening in jail.
00:12:44.460
We do not have a big time for deceitful cetise demo.
