It's not unheard of for a defense team to use alternate theories of defense. In this case, we've seen them using self-defense, but we also saw them basically implying that the victim may have impaled himself.

Now, that's a very risky strategy because a jury can be offended by it.

In this case, there's been no evidence, there's been no suggestion by any witness that anybody was responsible for the stabbing other than Carmelo Anthony.

Of course, a defendant has every right to remain silent, but it's, as a practical matter, almost unheard of to claim self-defense without having the defendant take the stand and tell the jury that in his mind, he felt that he had no choice but to use not just force but lethal force to propel a lethal threat.
