00:00:30.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Emily Jashinsky, host of After Party and the Megyn Kelly Wrap-Up
00:00:37.220 Show on SiriusXM Channel 111. It's Thursday, July 30th, 2026, and this is your AM update.
00:00:43.760 He does not even crack 30% approval, so he's underperforming on the most prominent issues
00:00:49.020 of the day. New polling showing warning signs for President Trump with his own base as both
00:00:54.280 parties look ahead to the midterms. A thief scamming the cash-strapped Democrat National
00:00:59.060 committee out of nearly $29,000 as the party struggles with mounting debt ahead of the
00:01:04.460 midterms.
00:01:05.480 A powerful earthquake devastating southwestern Japan, killing at least 18 people and leaving
00:01:10.880 thousands without power or water as rescuers race to find survivors.
00:01:15.580 Did I pass this test?
00:01:16.780 Did you turn around?
00:01:18.100 No, I didn't.
00:01:19.120 Newly released body camera footage capturing former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's
00:01:23.920 arrest for alleged drunk driving.

00:02:37.300 A new slate of polling showing President Trump's approval rating sliding to some of the lowest
00:02:41.860 levels of either of his terms, with signs of weakening support extending into parts of his
00:02:46.640 own political coalition. The latest Economist YouGov poll finding just 34% of Americans
00:02:52.100 approving of the president's job performance, while a record 62% disapprove. That negative 28
00:02:58.380 point margin marking Mr. Trump's worst net approval rating across either of his two terms.
00:03:03.600 The president maintaining overwhelming support among Republicans who identify with the MAGA
00:03:07.760 movement, posting a net approval rating of a positive 89 points. Non-MAGA Republicans, however,
00:03:13.860 now closely divided. 55% approve versus 43% disapproving for a net approval of just plus 12,
00:03:21.720 collapsing from plus 84 points at the beginning of his second term. Independent voters also
00:03:27.360 souring sharply, giving Mr. Trump a net approval rating of negative 53 points compared to negative
00:03:33.040 four when he returned to office. A separate new CNN poll producing the same overall approval number
00:03:38.840 with just 34% of Americans approving of the president's performance.
00:03:43.460 A record 73% saying Mr. Trump is not devoting enough attention to the country's most important
00:03:48.900 problems, while roughly three-quarters believe he is out of touch with the challenges ordinary
00:03:53.460 Americans face.
00:03:55.180 The president receiving particularly weak marks on the issues dominating the news,
00:03:59.680 just 28% approving of his handling of the conflict with Iran, 25% approving of his handling
00:04:05.360 of inflation, and only 21 percent approving of his handling of gas prices.
00:04:10.100 CNN Washington bureau chief and political director David Chalian breaking down why those
00:04:14.960 numbers could prove especially damaging for the president and the GOP.
00:04:18.920 There is not an issue tested where he has majority support, but the major driving issues
00:04:24.620 of the day, Iran, inflation, gas prices, they are at the bottom of the list on those three
00:04:29.820 issues.
00:04:30.260 He does not even crack 30 percent approval.
00:04:32.580 So he's underperforming on the most prominent issues of the day than his overall approval.
00:04:38.020 I mean, on gas prices, 21 percent approval.
00:04:41.300 Inflation, the issue that sort of brought him back to the Oval Office, he promised to lower prices.
00:04:46.560 He's only at 25 percent approval.
00:04:48.760 And so even if you look at the top, like immigration, one of his former strong suits, he still only sits at 39 percent approval.
00:04:54.500 So there's not an issue where he is, he can sort of tout as a major success.
00:04:59.060 But really troubling for him and his party is that we know the economy is issue number one, and he is just very, very low in those numbers on that issue.
00:05:07.280 The president, however, finding one relative bright spot on voting rights and election integrity, his strongest issue in the CNN survey at 41 percent approval.
00:05:16.500 That coming as separate polling shows overwhelming public support for requiring voters to present photo identification.
00:05:23.300 CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten breaking it down.
00:05:26.120 Yeah, overwhelming support for it. We've spoken about it before and the polling really hasn't shifted all that much. And you can just see it right here. OK, so we're talking about voter voters favoring photo ID to vote. Among all voters, we're talking 77 percent. And this is uniform, basically, or universal, I should say. Universal. Democrats, 62 percent. Independents, 77 percent. Republicans, 95 percent.
00:05:48.900 this is something that is popular across the political spectrum. It is a rare thing that is
00:05:54.360 popular across the political spectrum. When it comes to voter ID, the voters are with President
00:05:59.460 Trump on this, whether they're Democrats, independents, or Republicans. Overall, very
00:06:03.580 clear, we're talking about three and four overall who support the idea of photo ID in order to vote.
00:06:09.460 We asked RealClearPolitics co-founder and President Tom Bevin what the growing divide
00:06:13.820 inside the Republican coalition could mean in November.
00:06:16.820 It's huge, obviously. I mean, because the midterms are lower turnout elections and you need to motivate your base first and foremost. To have the Republican Party split like that and also to have an enthusiasm gap where Democrats are much, much more eager to turn out in November or telling pollsters they are than Republicans.
00:06:38.720 I mean, those two things bode very ill for Republicans.
00:06:43.300 Midterms are base elections.
00:06:44.620 You have to turn out your base first and foremost.
00:06:46.960 Yes, you want to win over independents, but first and foremost, you have to turn out your side.
00:06:52.760 And Republicans are struggling to do that right now.
00:06:56.080 Bevan tells us why independents remain a critical piece of the midterm equation.
00:07:00.640 A lot of people will tell pollsters they're independent, but they're really,
00:07:04.360 they lean Democrat or they lean Republican.
00:07:06.380 And the people who are truly independent that will vote independently are about 10 percent, sometimes a little bit lower, sometimes a little bit higher.
00:07:14.300 That is a small slice of the electorate. But when you're talking about races that can be decided by a point or two, they become hugely important.
00:07:23.520 And so to have independence so sour on. And this is the other thing that is really a problem for Republicans is that they control all the levers of government.
00:07:32.620 So whatever your problem is, if you are dissatisfied with anything about the current state of our politics, whether it's the economy or inflation or Iran or anything else, there's really only one party that you can hold responsible for that.
00:07:47.940 And that's the Republican Party.
00:07:49.900 And that's why they are they're struggling in what is shaping up to be a very good Democratic year.
00:07:55.920 Bevin breaks down how both parties are attempting to frame the choice before voters.
00:08:00.000 it's very easy to nationalize these races around donald trump and so you have senate candidates
00:08:07.360 that in particular are running against donald trump even though their term is six years long
00:08:13.080 donald trump will will not be president for at least two-thirds of their term and yet it is all
00:08:18.300 about fighting him in this moment and that is what is motivating democrats and so yes they're they're
00:08:24.200 nationalizing these elections all across the country around donald trump and that's why you
00:08:29.600 Republicans are doing their best to make this, A, as localized as possible, and then B, the Republicans' second strategy is to say, look, you may not like Donald Trump, you may not like the Republican Party.
00:08:41.520 However, the alternative in a binary choice, which is the Democrats, they are worse.
00:08:46.480 And because they are radical, because they are socialists, because they are communists, and that is having some effect, but certainly it's not as persuasive.
00:08:56.180 As for voter ID, an issue where the president enjoys broad public support, Bevin offers a more complicated assessment of whether Republicans can translate that advantage into political momentum.
00:09:07.000 them. So that is another 80-20 issue that Republicans are on the 80 side of. However,
00:09:13.820 this is, and Chuck Schumer has said this, Democrats will never, ever give in on the issue of
00:09:21.900 voter ID, on the issue of Save America Act. Even if it was 100 to nothing, 100 to zero in favor of
00:09:28.640 that, Democrats will be going to the wall against it. And so, and ironically, it has been an issue
00:09:35.720 that has split Republicans. The Republican base, MAGA voters in particular, cannot understand why
00:09:41.660 Republicans in Washington, D.C. will not find the votes and pass this. And President Trump has been
00:09:47.720 very outspoken in terms of bashing John Thune and other Republicans for not getting this done.
00:09:55.860 And so ironically, it's an issue that is depressing the Republican base because Republicans are in
00:10:01.000 control and can't seem to get this passed. Meanwhile, Democrats are unified against it,
00:10:05.240 even though it's an issue that the public is against them on overwhelmingly.
00:10:10.200 The financially struggling Democrat National Committee falling victim to an email scam,
00:10:16.020 losing thousands of dollars to a fraudster impersonating its newly elected chairman.
00:10:20.780 Notice reporting an unknown person emailed a DNC staffer in February of last year,
00:10:26.400 pretending to be Chairman Ken Martin just days after he took office.
00:10:29.760 The staffer reportedly sending the imposter nearly $29,000.
00:10:35.040 A DNC official telling Notice the committee caught the mistake within minutes and contacted Wells Fargo, but recovered only $7,000.
00:10:42.780 The former staffer no longer working for the committee.
00:10:46.080 The DNC later disclosing what it called a, quote,
00:10:48.620 misdisbursement caused by an outside fraudster to the Federal Election Commission, promising to implement additional safeguards.
00:10:55.520 A committee spokesperson describing the incident to notice as a, quote, one-off mistake that was quickly addressed, while insisting nothing similar has happened since.
00:11:04.540 The embarrassing loss coming as the DNC struggles with a much larger financial crisis ahead of November's midterm elections.
00:11:11.100 Federal records showing the committee with approximately $16.3 million in cash and $18.5 million in debt through the end of June,
00:11:19.860 while the Republican National Committee holds more than $128 million and carries no debt.
00:11:25.520 The DNC also reportedly putting its Washington headquarters up as collateral to secure a $15
00:11:31.460 million line of credit. The Bulwark reporter Lauren Egan explaining Monday on MSNOW why the
00:11:37.880 committee's financial condition threatens its ability to perform its central role during a
00:11:42.460 midterm election. The Democratic National Committee is going into August with $2 million in debt.
00:11:48.140 That is pretty bad. I think there was some hope at the beginning of the year that Ken Martin was
00:11:52.580 going to be able to turn this around, that once we got into 2026, some of these big donors would
00:11:57.440 come back to the table. And that clearly just hasn't happened in a very meaningful way.
00:12:02.300 And the big concern now is that Ken Martin is essentially driving the DNC to irrelevance.
00:12:07.060 The whole point of the DNC in a midterm year is to basically act as a bank and to give out money
00:12:11.920 to the big party committees, the DS, the DTRIP. And Martin can't do that right now. So there's
00:12:17.780 essentially no coordinated campaign going on amongst these party committees and that is again
00:12:23.540 the dnc's entire purpose is to do that in a midterm election year so his relevance is just
00:12:30.420 completely gone down the toilet and it's really not a great situation coming up a deadly earthquake
00:12:38.860 tearing through southwestern japan collapsing homes and a crowded shopping mall as crews search
00:12:44.220 for people still trapped in the wreckage. And former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's
00:12:48.740 alleged drunk driving arrest caught on newly released body camera footage. 0.58
00:12:57.380 We wouldn't be celebrating America 250 if it weren't for a strong foundation set by the framers.
00:13:03.800 Hamilton built America's financial foundation on the principle of sound, stable money,
00:13:09.100 a principle later embodied by the gold standard. But we abandoned that discipline.
00:13:13.720 in 1971, infamously, and have since seen inflation erode the dollar's value.
00:13:19.880 So what's the foundation of your savings? Is it gold or is it something that can be shaken,
00:13:25.440 disrupted, or devalued? Birch Gold Group has been helping Americans solidify their savings with gold

00:14:16.500 989898 today. A massive earthquake rocking southwestern Japan, killing at least 18 people
00:14:26.760 and leaving rescue crews racing to reach survivors still believed to trap beneath collapsed buildings.
00:14:32.500 The U.S. Geological Survey measuring Tuesday afternoon's earthquake at magnitude 6.8. The
00:14:38.820 shallow quake striking near the coastal city of Uto at approximately 4.27 p.m. local time.
00:14:45.460 The destruction stretching across the region, with houses flattened, roads torn apart,
00:14:50.560 and fires reportedly breaking out in the nearby Kumamoto city. Some of the worst devastation
00:14:56.160 unfolding at the Eon Mall in the town of Kashima, where thousands of customers were reportedly
00:15:01.640 shopping when the earthquake hit. The mall reportedly evacuating approximately 3,000
00:15:06.500 people into the parking lot before a suspected gas explosion ripped through another section of
00:15:11.980 the complex more than an hour later. Part of the mall's second floor collapsing, trapping workers
00:15:17.120 still inside. At least four people now confirmed dead at the mall, with several others reportedly
00:15:22.640 remaining missing as soldiers and emergency crews searched the wreckage. Rescuers also searching
00:15:28.260 collapsed homes and a heavily damaged paper mill, where a falling chimney reportedly killed five
00:15:33.520 people and trapped several others. Japanese Prime Minister Sana'i Takeichi speaking at a press
00:15:39.100 conference yesterday on the ongoing rescue operation, announcing the deployment of more
00:15:43.340 than 3,500 military personnel and dozens of aircraft. There are many people who are still
00:15:49.140 waiting for help and it's a race against time. We will go all out to find and rescue as many people
00:15:56.140 as we can. The full scale of the disaster is still emerging, as extreme summer heat complicates the
00:16:02.200 search and leaves thousands of displaced residents sheltering without reliable electricity or running
00:16:07.280 water. Sky News Asia correspondent Helen Ann Smith reporting on the scale of the rescue effort
00:16:12.700 and the growing challenges facing communities across the disaster zone. And look, I think the
00:16:17.640 authorities are really throwing everything now at this rescue operation. In excess of three and a
00:16:22.460 half thousand soldiers, 20 aircraft, some 300,000 people have been told to evacuate and sort of stay
00:16:29.900 evacuated stay in these um evacuation shelters because the authorities are really worried about
00:16:35.700 aftershocks this was a pretty shallow earthquake only about 10 kilometers and that means that the
00:16:40.940 potential for afterquakes aftershocks is higher they've already been around 60 apparently albeit
00:16:46.700 not particularly strong ones but the concern is real there and then there are around 50,000 homes
00:16:52.260 without power 140,000 without water and that's been a real problem for the hospitals as well
00:16:57.700 Lots of reports of hospitals saying that they're finding it difficult to get energy supplies, some of their equipment's damaged.
00:17:05.320 They're trying to sort of relocate their patients to other places, but there's not a whole lot of hospitals who are able to take them.
00:17:12.560 Body camera footage from former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS broadcaster Tony Romo's alleged drunk driving arrest now public.
00:17:21.000 A Milwaukee County Sheriff's deputy pulling Romo over on an interstate shortly after 6 p.m. on July 23rd.
00:17:26.840 after allegedly watching him cross a white traffic line.
00:17:30.360 Romo telling the deputy he was coming from a golf tournament
00:17:32.660 and heading to meet his grandparents.
00:17:34.980 The deputy then asking Romo how much he had to drink.
00:17:37.980 How many drinks have you had?
00:17:41.040 You're coming from a golf course?
00:17:43.440 I'm playing a golf tournament in Wisconsin State Amphite.
00:17:46.340 Okay.
00:17:46.980 So it's like a USGA event.
00:17:49.720 Okay, all right.
00:17:51.060 I'm going to run you to some fields.
00:17:52.980 What's up here? 0.99
00:17:54.020 Field sobriety tests.
00:17:55.200 Are you willing to take any of those sobriety tests?
00:17:56.840 Romo pulling out his phone and saying he planned to contact his attorney,
00:18:03.820 the deputy telling him he could not make the call and ordering him out of the vehicle,
00:18:08.080 the former quarterback then placing his phone on the bumper of his truck to record the encounter himself.
00:18:13.280 The stop unfolding along a busy bridge, prompting the deputy to handcuff Romo
00:18:17.740 and explain they needed to relocate to safer, level ground.
00:18:21.680 You're detained pending an OWI investigation.
00:18:24.440 Deputy Corps, sir.
00:18:25.540 Are you going to take me through the...
00:18:26.700 So, as of right now, we're on a leveled ground.
00:18:31.620 We're on a bridge.
00:18:32.540 I want to convey you somewhere that's going to be an even surface, free of debris.
00:18:37.540 Yes, I agree.
00:18:38.540 Turn around for me.
00:18:40.220 The footage later picking up at the sheriff's station, where an officer cataloging Romo's
00:18:44.320 belongings informs him that deputies found miniature liquor bottles inside his backpack.
00:18:49.920 Romo responding, quote, yeah, any of them drank?
00:18:52.220 I don't think any of them were drank, right?
00:18:54.540 Romo then stretching before the field sobriety test,
00:18:57.080 telling officers he had undergone multiple back surgeries
00:18:59.520 and that riding in the back of the patrol car had aggravated his injuries.
00:19:03.760 Upon completion of the tests,
00:19:05.660 officers asking whether he would take a preliminary breath test.
00:19:08.700 You willing to submit to a PBT?
00:19:12.380 What is that?
00:19:13.500 It's a machine that you blow on.
00:19:15.980 It's a preliminary breath test.
00:19:17.440 It does not determine the results of my tests.
00:19:20.540 Oh, no, we're not doing that.
00:19:21.840 Okay.
00:19:22.000 I've heard or heard from all the lawyers,
00:19:23.480 don't ever do that. Okay. So we're not going to do that. Okay. All right, sir. Did I pass this
00:19:29.660 test? Can you turn around? No, I didn't. Can I use my phone real quick? Because there's a plane
00:19:35.880 taking off. You're under arrest for operating well under the influence, okay? The deputy then
00:19:41.400 placing Romo under arrest, citing him for first offense operating well intoxicated. The Milwaukee
00:19:46.960 County District Attorney's Office telling the California Post the allegation is being handled
00:19:51.100 as a traffic violation rather than a criminal charge.
00:19:54.520 Romo's scheduled to appear in court on September 21st
00:19:57.260 and has not yet publicly commented on the incident,
00:20:00.060 the 46-year-old playing quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys
00:20:02.900 from 2004 through 2016 before joining CBS
