00:00:30.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megyn Kelly.

00:00:34.880 It's Friday, March 6th, 2026, and this is your AM Update.

00:00:39.220 Pretty humbling when you start thinking about it.

00:00:40.740 There's a little kid from Westville, Oklahoma, gets to serve in the President's Cabinet.

00:00:44.080 President Trump taps Senator Mark Wayne Mullen as Homeland Security Secretary,

00:00:48.980 reassigning Kristi Noem amid a series of controversies.

00:00:52.540 Our timeline is ours and ours alone to control.

00:00:57.100 As long as it takes.

00:00:58.600 The Trump administration suggesting Operation Epic Fury in Iran is not ending anytime soon.

00:01:05.640 Virginia Democrats moving to limit cooperation with ICE as critics warn the state may be crossing

00:01:11.120 a legal line.

00:01:12.700 And in California, a potential political backfire as party leaders urge struggling Democrats

00:01:18.160 to drop out of the governor's race.

00:01:20.540 All that and more coming up in just a moment on your AM Update.

00:01:23.920 Our sponsor, the Electronic Payments Coalition, says Washington politicians are always getting

00:01:33.160 in your wallet, and now they're messing with your credit card.

00:01:36.480 They say your credit card and the security it offers are under attack, and that Senators

00:01:41.140 Dick Durbin and Roger Marshall want to change the nation's payment system to benefit corporate

00:01:46.340 megastores like Walmart and Target at the expense of everyday Americans.

00:01:50.140 credit cards can keep your payments secure and provide rewards that families use to help make

00:01:55.580 everyday purchases more affordable.

00:01:57.020 The Electronic Payments Coalition says the Durbin-Marshall mandates would let corporate megastores cut

00:02:02.960 corners on credit card processing, routing transactions over cheaper, untested networks with weaker

00:02:08.520 security and fewer protections.

00:02:16.140 President Trump announcing the first cabinet shakeup of his second term yesterday, removing Homeland

00:02:23.980 Security Secretary Kristi Noem amid mounting controversy and nominating Senator Mark Wayne

00:02:29.560 Mullen of Oklahoma to replace her.

00:02:32.380 Rumors swirling about Noem's imminent dismissal yesterday morning after reports surfaced the president

00:02:37.500 was unhappy with statements she made during a Tuesday Senate hearing, or at least that was the

00:02:43.460 last straw. Ms. Noem coming under fire for a glitzy multi-million dollar DHS ad campaign, 1.00

00:02:49.680 prominently featuring her.

00:02:51.800 If you're an illegal alien, this runway is your future, because you're headed home. 1.00

00:02:57.480 I'm Kristi Noem, the United States Secretary of Homeland Security.

00:03:01.480 Senator John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, pressing Noem about the ads during Tuesday's hearing.

00:03:06.840 No ma'am, I'm asking you, sorry to interrupt, but the president approved ahead of time you spending

00:03:13.880 $220 million running TV ads across the country in which you are featured prominently.

00:03:22.220 Yes sir, we went through the legal processes, did it correct?

00:03:24.960 Did the president know you were going to do this?

00:03:26.720 Yes.

00:03:27.540 He did?

00:03:28.080 Mm-hmm, yes.

00:03:28.980 Okay.

00:03:29.880 President Trump himself pushing back on that claim yesterday morning, telling Reuters,

00:03:33.880 quote, I never knew anything about it.

00:03:36.680 Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Trump making the call, posting to Truth Social, quote,

00:03:41.040 Secretary Kristi Noem, who has served us well and has had numerous and spectacular results,

00:03:45.980 especially on the border, will be moving to be special envoy for the Shield of the Americas,

00:03:52.220 our new security initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral,

00:03:57.200 Florida.

00:03:57.940 I thank Kristi for her service at Homeland.

00:04:00.800 Noem issuing a statement on social media, quote,

00:04:03.000 Thank you, President Trump, for appointing me as the special envoy for the Shield of the Americas.

00:04:08.140 Secretary Rubio and Secretary Hegseth are incredible leaders, and I look forward to

00:04:11.940 working with them closely to dismantle cartels that have poured drugs into our nation and killed

00:04:16.620 our children and grandchildren.

00:04:19.200 The newly announced Shield of the Americas, described by the White House as a regional coalition

00:04:23.700 of Latin American countries aimed at strengthening security across the Western Hemisphere.

00:04:28.640 Underneath the public-facing niceties, a source inside the administration telling Fox News,

00:04:34.780 It was time.

00:04:36.200 Replacing Kristi was based on the culmination of her many unfortunate leadership mishaps,

00:04:41.760 including the fallout in Minnesota, the $200 million ad campaign, the allegations of infidelity,

00:04:47.600 the mismanagement of her staff, and her constant feuding with the heads of other agencies.

00:04:52.960 Noem also facing questions about her alleged affair with special government employee and former

00:04:57.780 Trump advisor, Corey Lewandowski, whom she reportedly also tried to make her chief of staff an appointment 0.97

00:05:04.240 the president blocked.

00:05:05.800 She was asked multiple times about it on Wednesday in a House hearing without directly denying the

00:05:10.880 allegation, which is an open secret in D.C.

00:05:14.460 Lewandowski had been serving as one of Noem's top advisors at DHS.

00:05:18.340 While some reports indicate he intends to leave his post on March 31st along with the secretary,

00:05:24.160 Lewandowski telling NewsNation, quote, no decisions have been made.

00:05:28.920 Senator Mullen speaking to reporters on the Hill after his nomination.

00:05:32.780 What was your first reaction to just the news that you were nominated for this position just

00:05:37.400 to miss everything and that's happening?

00:05:38.600 Humbling because I had to call my dad and I mean, because it happened quick, right?

00:05:44.740 I had to call my wife, call my dad both.

00:05:46.060 And it's just, you know, pretty humbling when you start thinking about it.

00:05:49.920 A little kid from Westville, Oklahoma gets to serve in the president's cabinet.

00:05:53.280 That's pretty neat.

00:05:54.560 The position requires Senate confirmation and even Democrats saying they expect him to receive

00:05:59.980 the required 50 votes, with Vice President J.D. Vance available to cast the deciding vote

00:06:04.600 if necessary.

00:06:05.820 At least one Democrat already signaling support, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman posting

00:06:10.780 on X, he intends to vote in favor of Mullen.

00:06:13.620 A hearing date for Mullen has not yet been set in the Senate.

00:06:18.820 Secretary of War Pete Hegseth yesterday providing an update on the ongoing operations in Iran.

00:06:24.980 Earlier in the day, political reporting U.S. Central Command, which is overseeing the operation,

00:06:29.780 requesting additional intel officers to support the op, quote, for at least 100 days, but likely

00:06:36.240 through September.

00:06:37.640 That is well beyond President Trump's initial projection that Operation Epic Fury would last

00:06:42.860 about four weeks.

00:06:44.500 Secretary Hegseth telling reporters on Wednesday it could take up to eight weeks, then later

00:06:49.880 removing the time constraint altogether.

00:06:52.420 Iran is hoping that we cannot sustain this, which is a really bad miscalculation for the

00:06:59.800 IRGC in Iran.

00:07:01.740 You see, there's no shortage of American will here.

00:07:05.160 We've got no shortage of munitions.

00:07:06.680 Our stockpiles of defensive and offensive weapons allow us to sustain this campaign as long as

00:07:13.300 we need to.

00:07:14.500 The dumb, politically correct wars of the past were the opposite of what we're doing here. 0.91

00:07:19.340 They had vague objectives with restrictive, minimalist rules of engagement. 0.98

00:07:24.680 No more.

00:07:25.820 Our authorities, his authorities, CENTCOM's authorities through the President and myself are maxed out.

00:07:31.880 Our timeline is ours and ours alone to control, as long as it takes to ensure the United States

00:07:39.120 of America achieves these objectives.

00:07:41.340 Meanwhile, President Trump's speaking to Reuters yesterday about who will replace the now-deceased

00:07:46.020 supreme leader of Iran.

00:07:48.160 Mr. Trump's saying, quote,

00:07:49.220 The President adding that he thinks the next leader is not likely to be the late Ayatollah's

00:08:05.920 son, who has emerged as a frontrunner.

00:08:08.860 Secretary Hegseth yesterday asked if these comments represent an expansion of the mission

00:08:13.240 now to regime change.

00:08:15.100 Well, there's no expansion.

00:08:16.840 Ultimately, I think the President's having a heck of a say.

00:08:19.220 And who runs Iran, given the ongoing operation we have.

00:08:22.680 So there's no expansion in our objectives.

00:08:24.160 We know exactly what we're trying to achieve.

00:08:26.000 Since the beginning of the operation, Iran conducting retaliatory strikes against 12 countries.

00:08:31.700 Mr. Hegseth addressing questions about concerns over a widening Middle East conflict.

00:08:37.060 This idea that the war might be expanding or there's chaos and nothing could be further

00:08:43.020 from the truth.

00:08:43.700 If anything, what Iran is doing by targeting allied countries that would otherwise want 0.63

00:08:48.740 to stay out of this, they've actually pulled them into the American orbit.

00:08:52.860 So now you've got UAE and Qatar and Bahrain and Saudi and Kuwait and others saying, hey,

00:08:58.260 we're with you.

00:09:00.040 We'll shoot with you. 1.00

00:09:01.260 We'll fly with you. 1.00

00:09:02.220 We'll defend with you.

00:09:03.420 We'll allow you more basing and other opportunities, a lot of which, you know, we can't talk about

00:09:08.080 and won't talk about.

00:09:08.900 But it's actually firming up the unity of the resistance in order to focus exactly where

00:09:13.680 we need to.

00:09:14.460 So this idea that it's expanding or going, no, it's actually, it's actually simplifying

00:09:19.120 in a number of ways exactly what we need to achieve and how we'll achieve it.

00:09:22.560 Coming up, Virginia Democrats advancing legislation imposing sweeping new limitations on ICE as

00:09:30.640 critics warn the Commonwealth may be crossing the line.

00:09:34.340 A political misfire in California, Democrat candidates push back after party leadership

00:09:39.340 urges those trailing in the polls to drop out of the race.

00:09:43.000 If you are looking to make smarter choices for your health this year, consider Riverbend

00:09:54.580 Ranch.

00:11:12.840 The Virginia House passing a series of anti-ICE measures designed to sharply restrict federal

00:11:20.100 immigration enforcement in the state.

00:11:21.960 In a 63-34 party-line vote, Democrats advancing legislation banning state and local law enforcement

00:11:29.240 from assisting, cooperating with, or using, quote, any law enforcement resources to facilitate

00:11:34.580 any operation to identify arrest or otherwise impose a penalty upon any individual for purposes

00:11:40.640 of federal immigration enforcement.

00:11:43.120 The legislation also barring ICE agents from making arrests at courthouses, schools, and

00:11:48.020 faith-based organizations.

00:11:49.860 The bill does include an exception for immigration officers who obtain a judicial warrant.

00:11:55.720 But ICE needs only an administrative warrant issued by DHS to arrest a detainee and to request

00:12:01.960 custody transfers from local jails.

00:12:04.320 That's because immigration enforcement happens primarily under Article 2 of the Constitution

00:12:08.900 within the executive branch.

00:12:10.820 You don't have to go to an Article 3 court.

00:12:14.460 The legislation also banning ICE agents from coming within 40 feet of a polling location

00:12:19.420 and would criminalize agents wearing face coverings while conducting enforcement operations,

00:12:25.220 a restriction almost certain to be ignored by ICE, which has already obtained a legal ruling

00:12:30.920 in federal court blocking a similar mask law in California as barred under the Supremacy

00:12:36.640 Clause, these being federal officers controlled by federal law.

00:12:40.960 The debate comes as DHS reports an 8,000 percent increase in threats against ICE officers and their

00:12:46.180 families, along with a 1,300 percent spike in assaults on agents.

00:12:51.560 DHS authorizing agents to wear facial coverings in the field in response to those growing threats.

00:12:56.640 With the Virginia Senate already passing the bills, the legislation now heads to the desk

00:13:01.200 of new Democrat Governor Abigail Spanberger.

00:13:04.540 If signed, the measure would mark Governor Spanberger's latest step in strengthening Virginia's

00:13:09.200 sanctuary state status.

00:13:11.820 Shortly after taking office, Governor Spanberger terminating a cooperation agreement with ICE

00:13:16.120 that had allowed Virginia State Police and Department of Corrections officers to assist federal

00:13:21.440 immigration authorities.

00:13:22.400 The push to pass this newest slate of bills coming just days after the killing of 41-year-old

00:13:28.280 Stephanie Minter at a Fairfax County bus stop.

00:13:32.220 Police arresting Abdul Jalloh, an illegal immigrant from West Africa's Sierra Leone,

00:13:37.480 who investigators say had been arrested more than 30 times since entering the U.S. in 2012.

00:13:42.900 Republican Delegate Dolores Riley Oates directly connecting the state's policies to the killing

00:13:48.380 during debate Wednesday on the House floor.

00:13:50.540 Just weeks after Governor Spanberger chose to end the Commonwealth's cooperation with federal

00:13:56.380 immigration authorities, a woman is dead, killed by someone who should never have been

00:14:01.900 free to walk our streets.

00:14:03.920 That's not a coincidence.

00:14:06.000 Governor Spanberger now has until April 13th to sign, amend or veto the legislation.

00:14:11.800 We spoke to attorney and founder of the Article 3 project, Mike Davis, who says these bills,

00:14:16.320 if signed into law, go far beyond simply declining to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.

00:14:22.160 These states are not required to cooperate with federal law enforcement, but these states certainly

00:14:33.120 cannot obstruct federal law enforcement.

00:14:37.320 And when you have these Virginia Democrats in the House and the Senate conspiring with the new

00:14:47.020 Virginia governor, Abigail Spanberger, and her administration to obstruct federal immigration

00:14:55.720 enforcements, that is a federal crime.

00:15:00.220 You have the issue of obstruction of law enforcement, conspiracy, harboring illegal aliens, assaults.

00:15:10.560 If they touch federal law enforcement in the line of duty, even kidnapping, if they follow through

00:15:17.160 on these arrests of federal ICE agents.

00:15:21.440 Governor Spanberger and these Democrats, they are engaging in a seditious conspiracy.

00:15:29.600 Davis warning, if state and local officials attempt to interfere with federal immigration authorities,

00:15:34.560 the consequences could be deadly.

00:15:36.460 This is a very dangerous path that Governor Abigail Spanberger is going down. 0.75

00:15:42.600 This is Confederates-like behavior. 0.98

00:15:46.000 It's like these Democrats in the South are returning to their Confederates' roots. 0.81

00:15:54.200 And if anyone gets killed during this Confederate standoff by these Virginia Democrats against

00:16:02.280 federal immigration enforcements, if anyone gets killed, those Democrat officials in Virginia could

00:16:11.220 face federal felony murder charges.

00:16:14.180 They are on a very, very dangerous path with what they're doing by creating this illegal,

00:16:22.340 unconstitutional, very dangerous criminal conflict between the state of Virginia and the federal

00:16:29.640 governments.

00:16:30.100 We asked Davis about the so-called exception in these bills, allowing cooperation with ICE,

00:16:35.720 but only when federal agents obtain a judicial warrant from an Article III court.

00:16:41.000 He tells us that flies in the face of the Constitution.

00:16:44.520 Federal immigration law is written by Congress.

00:16:48.300 There is not any requirements for an Article III court judicial warrant to enforce our federal immigration

00:16:56.440 laws.

00:16:57.060 Our immigration laws are set up where we have federal immigration officials who go to U.S.

00:17:04.760 immigration judges.

00:17:07.280 Immigration enforcement is civil, not criminal.

00:17:10.920 And so there is no need to get a judicial warrant to enforce our federal immigration laws.

00:17:16.740 Any states that tries to impose these burdens on the federal government are violating federal law.

00:17:24.680 It is a direct violation of the U.S. Constitution, which makes clear that Congress writes our

00:17:32.380 immigration laws and those immigration laws are the supreme law of the land.

00:17:36.420 If this legislation were to become law, Davis tells us the Trump administration has legal options.

00:17:42.340 The Trump administration can and should bring a civil action against Virginia if Virginia tries to disrupt,

00:17:52.540 obstruct federal law enforcement executing federal law.

00:17:57.480 These courts are going to strike this down immediately.

00:17:59.880 Secondly, the Justice Department should explore bringing criminal charges against these Democrats, including Governor

00:18:07.820 Spanberger, who are engaged in a seditious conspiracy right now by plotting to use force and arrest to stop,

00:18:18.880 to obstruct federal agents carrying out federal law.

00:18:22.360 That is textbook seditious conspiracy, and they could be charged right now for that. 0.97

00:18:27.940 If they actually are dumb enough to try to move forward with these arrests of federal agents doing their jobs, 0.82

00:18:36.940 then the Justice Department can and should bring charges against all the Virginia Democrats involved, 0.96

00:18:45.680 including the governor, for insurrection.

00:18:49.080 In California, a push by Democratic Party leadership to thin the crowded field in the race for governor

00:18:55.700 now appearing to backfire.

00:18:58.400 State Democrat Party chair Rusty Hicks earlier this week urging candidates who, quote,

00:19:03.900 do not have a viable path to drop out of the race by April 15th,

00:19:07.940 warning a fractured Democratic field could allow two Republicans to advance to the general election,

00:19:14.180 and only two will advance.

00:19:16.700 California operates under a top-two primary system,

00:19:19.560 with candidates from all parties appearing on the same ballot,

00:19:22.140 and the two highest vote-getters move on to November regardless of party.

00:19:27.640 A new poll from Tulchin Research finding the two candidates leading now are both Republicans,

00:19:33.660 Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and former Fox News host Steve Hilton,

00:19:38.500 each polling at 15 percent.

00:19:41.040 Meantime, Democrats' support remains fractured across the crowded field,

00:19:44.160 including Congressman Eric Swalwell, who has 14 percent,

00:19:48.380 former Congresswoman and angry, angry lady Katie Porter at 13, 1.00

00:19:52.560 billionaire Tom Steyer at 10, and several others trailing behind.

00:19:56.380 But instead of agreeing to thin the field, as requested,

00:19:59.680 several Democrats doubling down on their candidacies.

00:20:02.840 Among them, former Biden HHS Secretary Javier Becerra,

00:20:06.460 State Schools Superintendent Tony Thurmond,

00:20:09.220 and former State Comptroller Betty Yee.

00:20:11.140 Becerra asking at a candidate forum earlier this week,

00:20:14.820 Isn't it interesting that the candidates they're asking to get out of the race

00:20:18.520 are the candidates of color?

00:20:20.580 Shots fired!

00:20:21.980 Thurmond echoing that criticism, saying in a statement the party was telling,

00:20:26.020 Every candidate of color in the race for governor to drop out.

00:20:30.820 Yee, who filed her paperwork on Wednesday telling Politico,

00:20:34.120 Voters choose the next governor, not political gatekeepers.

00:20:38.060 State Party Chair Hicks pushing back on the criticism,

00:20:40.780 Wednesday.

00:20:41.400 My letter is simply calling upon candidates to be thoughtful,

00:20:46.320 to be responsible and honest with themselves and with all of us

00:20:51.100 in assessing their campaign and their decision to move forward.

00:20:55.100 The reality is, is that there has been poll after poll after poll

00:20:59.460 that place some candidates in one place

00:21:02.260 and place other candidates in other places

00:21:04.920 as it regards to the rankings that we see.

00:21:09.340 And if you're at the bottom of that time and time again,

00:21:13.900 my hope is, is that you believe and can showcase a clear path

00:21:18.720 to being able to get to the top of that list.

00:21:22.500 And so, you know, only time will tell.

00:21:25.460 Governor Newsom asked on Tuesday by CBS about the crowded field.

00:21:28.860 Right now, you have just two Republican candidates

00:21:31.900 and you've got so many Democratic candidates

00:21:33.980 and it's just a percentage game.

00:21:35.740 And as a consequence of that, the more there are

00:21:37.760 with a fixed number of likely voters

00:21:40.520 within that poll to choose,

00:21:42.760 this could be a problem.

00:21:44.680 That said, I'm not putting my thumb on anything at the moment.

00:21:47.440 The primary set for June 2nd.

00:21:52.800 And that'll do it for your AM update.
