00:00:00.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megan Kelly. It's Thursday, May 8th, 2025, and this is your AM
00:00:08.320 Update. It was a hard decision, but regrets then. No, I think it was the right decision.
00:00:16.980 Former President Biden hitting the interview circuit this week, reflecting on his term in
00:00:21.100 office and offering thoughts on the current administration. Hint, he's against it.
00:00:26.660 The Russians are asking for a certain set of requirements. We think they're asking for too
00:00:32.660 much. Vice President J.D. Vance speaking candidly about how Russians are holding up peace negotiations.
00:00:38.380 The Wall Street Journal reports the U.S. is ramping up its spying efforts on Greenland.
00:00:43.620 A Surgeon General switcheroo. And a new poll shows Californians believe Governor Gavin Newsom is more
00:00:49.860 focused on national ambitions than he is on running their state. All that and more coming up in just a
00:00:56.020 moment on your AM Update. If you haven't heard about Riverbend Ranch, listen up. They have just
00:01:05.920 introduced their Riverbend Ranch steaks to the marketplace, and you need to try them. Riverbend
00:01:12.720 Ranch raises their own beef on beautiful mountain meadows only a few miles from West Yellowstone.
00:01:19.200 Unlike most ranches, Riverbend Ranch never uses growth hormones or antibiotics. They treat their
00:01:25.200 animals humanely and with respect. There are advantages of buying directly from the ranch.
00:01:30.380 They can track the health of every animal from the day it is born and can guarantee that it has been
00:01:35.080 healthy every day of its life. Riverbend Ranch has its own state-of-the-art processing facility on the
00:01:41.460 ranch that has received several national awards as one of the best in the U.S. But most importantly is
00:01:47.400 the quality of the beef. They age their beef to perfection for 21 days. You simply cannot buy beef like
00:01:53.960 this in a grocery store. You cannot. Ship directly from the ranch to your home, you get a much better
00:01:59.180 price than going through the middlemen. Order directly from riverbendranch.com and use promo code
00:02:05.720 MEGAN to get $20 off your first order. That's riverbendranch.com, code MEGAN. And be prepared,
00:02:13.180 once you taste it, I think you're going to be coming back for more and more. Again, riverbendranch.com, code MEGAN.
00:02:20.920 Later today, President Biden set to appear on ABC's The View along with Dr. Jill Biden. Now a private
00:02:31.420 citizen, Mr. Biden embracing a more open relationship with the press, appearing for two
00:02:36.320 interviews this week alone, including a Wednesday sit-down with the BBC. The former president asked
00:02:42.140 about the timing of his withdrawal from the 2024 race. Should you have withdrawn earlier,
00:02:47.760 giving someone else a bigger job? I don't think it would have mattered. We left at a time when
00:02:57.240 we had a good candidate. She was fully funded. And what happened was,
00:03:06.440 I had become, what we had set out to do, no one thought we could do. And become so successful on
00:03:16.680 our agenda, it was hard to say, no, I'm going to stop now. It was a hard decision. But, uh...
00:03:23.320 Regrets, though?
00:03:25.660 No, I think it was the right decision.
00:03:28.060 But you shouldn't have taken it earlier?
00:03:29.720 Well, I don't think so. I mean, I don't know how that would have made much difference.
00:03:33.540 A November report from the New York Post revealing the Biden team's internal polling at the time he
00:03:38.880 dropped out showed then-candidate Trump on track to win 400 electoral votes in a would-be landslide
00:03:45.380 loss for Mr. Biden. President Biden's decision to exit the race on July 21st, triggering a $200
00:03:51.720 million fundraising surge for the Harris campaign in just one week, eventually ballooning into a $2
00:03:58.020 billion war chest. With just 106 days to build a full presidential campaign,
00:04:03.300 Ms. Harris drawing support from celebrity heavyweights like Oprah, Beyonce, Taylor Swift,
00:04:09.600 and the Obamas, among dozens of others. Despite the star-studded backing and unprecedented fundraising,
00:04:16.380 Ms. Harris became the first Democratic nominee in two decades to lose both the popular and the electoral vote.
00:04:22.740 President Biden also criticizing the Trump administration's effort to negotiate an end
00:04:27.820 to Russia's war on Ukraine.
00:04:29.880 President Trump is now saying, look, if you want peace, Ukraine is going to have to give up some
00:04:34.840 territory. Some people think that is common sense to say that. Do you think it's not common sense?
00:04:41.440 It's perhaps modern-day appeasement?
00:04:43.560 It is modern-day appeasement. And anybody who thinks he's going to stop is just foolish. I just
00:04:50.100 don't understand how people think that if we allow a dictator, a thug, to decide he's going to take
00:05:00.960 significant portions of land that aren't his, and that's going to satisfy him.
00:05:05.440 Russian troops began amassing forces along the Ukraine border in spring of 2021.
00:05:09.660 In the months leading up to the full-scale invasion, the Biden administration pursuing a
00:05:14.120 series of diplomatic efforts to avert war, including a December 2021 virtual summit between
00:05:19.740 President Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Biden White House warning of severe
00:05:24.540 economic consequences should Russia proceed. But in January 2022, President Biden seemed to
00:05:31.360 telegraph a green light to Mr. Putin during a press conference with this infamous remark.
00:05:36.600 Russia will be held accountable if it invades, and it depends on what it does. It's one thing if it's
00:05:42.760 a minor incursion and then we end up having to fight about what to do and not do, etc. But if they
00:05:48.680 actually do what they're capable of doing with the force amassed on the border, it is going to be a
00:05:54.220 disaster for Russia. The invasion began about a month later. Throughout his presidency, Mr. Biden
00:05:59.800 maintained a policy of isolating Russia on the world stage, the Trump administration accusing the Biden
00:06:04.980 team of fueling a prolonged and aimless conflict, funding what they call a perpetual meat grinder
00:06:11.420 with no clear path to victory. Vice President J.D. Vance on Wednesday at the Munich Security Conference
00:06:17.720 in D.C., providing an update on peace negotiations. Following months of back and forth, the VP revealing
00:06:24.320 the Russians are now asking for too much to end this war. I think that's what President Trump has been
00:06:29.940 very deliberate about, is actually forcing the Russians to say, here is what we would like in
00:06:35.660 order to end the conflict. Right now, the Russians are asking for a certain set of requirements, a
00:06:41.860 certain set of concessions in order to end the conflict. We think they're asking for too much,
00:06:47.740 okay? And then obviously, the Ukrainians matter a lot. They're the other side, they're the other
00:06:52.600 party, at least to the direct conflict. And we have to ask, what is the Ukrainian, what do they need
00:06:57.820 in order to bring this conflict to a successful completion? And we're going to continue to have
00:07:04.060 that conversation. U.S. officials devoting tremendous amounts of time and resources toward bringing the
00:07:08.760 war to an end. President Trump recently saying both sides are closer than ever to a settlement.
00:07:13.740 Mr. Vance saying the next step is direct engagement between the two.
00:07:17.200 I mentioned the Russians, but also the Ukrainians have also been sort of, they've put a piece of
00:07:22.320 paper in our hands that says, this is what we would need in order to bring this conflict to a
00:07:27.540 successful resolution from our perspective. And there's a big gulf, predictably, between where
00:07:32.760 the Russians and the Ukrainians are. And we think the next step of the negotiation is to try to close
00:07:37.580 that gulf. We think it's probably impossible for us to mediate this entirely without at least some
00:07:43.560 direct negotiation between the two.
00:07:45.260 The vice president expressing frustration with both sides for focusing on historical grievances
00:07:50.360 rather than looking forward to how a deal could be reached. On the economic front this weekend,
00:07:56.240 Treasury Secretary Scott Besson and U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer set to meet with
00:08:01.040 Chinese officials in Switzerland for the first time, kicking off trade negotiations.
00:08:06.260 Vice President Vance setting the tone ahead of the meeting.
00:08:09.000 We find ourselves in a very precarious place. When I say we, I mean the entire West. I mean the NATO
00:08:14.580 alliance. I mean the United States and Europe. We find ourselves more and more reliant on
00:08:21.520 countries that may not have our best interests at heart. And even if they're halfway decent trading
00:08:26.360 partners, it's still a little bit risky to put all of your eggs in one proverbial basket economically.
00:08:32.680 And what the president has said is we must rebalance the global economy vis-a-vis China.
00:08:37.720 Mr. Vance going on to say the old ways of doing business with the U.S. are over.
00:08:43.060 On Tuesday, President Trump announcing the conclusion of his successful military campaign
00:08:47.720 against the Houthi rebel group in Yemen. The campaign waged under Defense Secretary Hegseth
00:08:53.060 in response to months of sustained Houthi attacks on international vessels operating in the Red Sea,
00:08:59.040 an important shipping route connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean.
00:09:02.760 Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying the Houthis launched dozens of attacks against U.S.
00:09:07.900 military ships as well as commercial vessels. While the Biden administration had favored
00:09:12.340 limited case-by-case responses, the Trump administration launching a sustained offensive
00:09:17.400 wave after wave of strikes, killing hundreds and significantly degrading Houthi military capabilities.
00:09:24.000 President Trump telling reporters from the Oval the Houthis have had enough.
00:09:27.680 The Houthis have announced that they are not, or they've announced to us at least,
00:09:32.560 that they don't want to fight anymore. They just don't want to fight. We will honor that
00:09:37.140 and we will stop the bombings and they have capitulated. But more importantly, they,
00:09:45.400 we will take their word. They say they will not be blowing up ships anymore. I think that's very,
00:09:51.160 very positive. They were, they were knocking out a lot of ships going, as you know, sailing beautifully
00:09:57.560 down the various seas. It, it wasn't just a canal. It was a lot of other places. And I will accept
00:10:06.000 their word. And we are going to stop the bombing of the Houthis effective immediately.
00:10:12.940 Under the terms of the agreement, both sides agree to halt attacks against one another.
00:10:16.940 Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who's turning out to be the Waldo of this administration,
00:10:22.280 he's everywhere, led negotiations for the U.S. with assistance from the Omani Foreign Ministry.
00:10:28.880 Coming up, the Wall Street Journal reporting anonymous sources say the U.S. is ramping up
00:10:33.740 its spy efforts against Greenland. And a new poll shows most California voters believe Governor
00:10:39.200 Gavin Newsom is more focused on his national ambitions than the problems at home. Also,
00:10:45.140 big news about Mr. Trump's chosen Surgeon General.
00:10:53.360 Tax day may have passed, but for millions of Americans, the real trouble is just beginning.

00:11:49.020 Let Tax Network USA help before the IRS makes the next move.
00:11:55.660 A big and important switcheroo on the Surgeon General nomination. President Trump announcing on
00:12:01.780 Truth Social that he is replacing his nominee, Jeanette Neshawatt, with a star of the Maha movement,
00:12:08.320 Dr. Casey Means. Neshawatt, the sister-in-law of now-ousted National Security Advisor Mike Walz,
00:12:14.340 had an odd background for this position. A graduate of a Caribbean medical school who ran CityMD,
00:12:20.660 Neshawatt was a big proponent during the pandemic of masking children and of getting kids under the age
00:12:26.060 of 12, vaxxed, all while she downplayed the risk of myocarditis in kids who get the vaccine.
00:12:32.620 In October 2021, she said the risks for kids getting the COVID jab are extremely low.
00:12:37.780 Around that same time, she called for more masking, just as Dr. Marty McCary of Johns Hopkins,
00:12:42.920 now Mr. Trump's FDA chair, was writing an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal arguing against
00:12:47.760 masking children. Point being, it took her a very long time to see the truth
00:12:52.100 on some very controversial COVID measures. Mr. Trump not addressing the switch directly,
00:12:57.560 but celebrating his nomination of Dr. Casey Means to the Surgeon General role,
00:13:02.380 saying she has impeccable Maha credentials. Dr. Means, whose brother Callie is helping RFKJ revamp
00:13:08.760 HHS, is a graduate of Stanford undergrad and Stanford med school. She went on to become a surgeon who,
00:13:14.920 in her fifth year of residency, left the program after realizing the medical industry was not about
00:13:21.040 preventing illness, but instead treats problems caused by chronic diseases that doctors erroneously
00:13:27.220 accept as inevitable. Did five years of head and neck surgery training. And at the end of that
00:13:34.820 training, before launching out into being a, you know, private practice or academic attending physician,
00:13:41.160 I looked around me at what was happening in American health more broadly and realized that
00:13:47.800 even though, you know, I'm working hard in my lane as an ear, nose and throat surgeon,
00:13:52.520 more broadly, American health is just getting destroyed. It's getting destroyed. Chronic illness
00:13:57.460 is exploding across the lifespan. And that's not something that I really learned about in medical
00:14:03.260 school. At the best institutions in America, the hospitals, the medical schools, we're not talking
00:14:08.380 about why. We're talking about how to medicate these conditions. We're talking about how to operate
00:14:13.020 more on these conditions. Mr. Trump says Dr. Neshawat will work in some other capacity at HHS.
00:14:19.740 The Wall Street Journal reporting two anonymous sources say the U.S. is ordering intel agencies
00:14:25.340 to step up the spying on Greenland. The Trump administration eyeing the icy Arctic island for its
00:14:31.480 strategic importance. As northern ice melts, key shipping lanes open up, slashing travel time.
00:14:37.220 Military competitors China and Russia ramping up their Arctic influence in recent years.
00:14:41.580 Greenland is also home to vast mineral deposits and oil reserves. A semi-autonomous territory of the
00:14:48.760 Kingdom of Denmark, both local and Danish officials express strong opposition to U.S. acquisition.
00:14:55.620 Despite resistance, on Sunday, President Trump again declining to rule out military force to take
00:15:01.420 the island. I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything. No,
00:15:05.660 not there. We need Greenland very badly. Greenland is a very small amount of people,
00:15:11.120 which we'll take care of and we'll cherish them and all of that. But we need that for international
00:15:16.600 security. The Wall Street Journal reporting, based on anonymous sources, quote, several high-ranking
00:15:22.620 officials under Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard issued a collection emphasis message to
00:15:28.500 intelligence agency heads last week. They were directed to learn more about Greenland's independence
00:15:33.080 movement and attitudes on American resource extraction on the island. Agents reportedly instructed
00:15:39.140 to identify people in Greenland and Denmark supporting U.S. objectives for the island.
00:15:44.720 Director Gabbard, responding to this report, quote,
00:15:47.540 The Wall Street Journal should be ashamed of aiding deep state actors who seek to undermine the
00:15:52.280 president by politicizing and leaking classified information. They are breaking the law and
00:15:57.800 undermining our nation's security and democracy. The Trump administration undertaking a broad effort to
00:16:03.440 crack down on leakers across federal agencies. Director Gabbard's office referring at least
00:16:07.940 three alleged leakers in other cases to the DOJ in recent weeks. Ms. Gabbard confirming to the
00:16:13.760 Megyn Kelly show last week, her office is investigating at least 11 more cases, some of which may be
00:16:19.940 referred to the DOJ. We can safely assume that number's now at at least 12. A new LA Times and UC Berkeley
00:16:28.320 poll finding 54 percent of registered California voters think Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom is more
00:16:33.960 interested in boosting his presidential prospects than he is in governing his state. Just 26 percent say the
00:16:40.320 opposite. Poll director Mark DiCamillo saying, quote, people kind of look at him as being very
00:16:45.960 ambitious. Governor Newsom insisting last week to next up host Mark Halperin that he's not yet made any
00:16:52.460 decisions on 2028. I might. I don't know. But I have to have a burning why and I have to have a compelling vision that
00:17:01.000 distinguishes myself from anybody else without that, without both. And I don't deserve to even be in the
00:17:07.300 conversation. But I am someone that's trying to I'm I'm trying to pursue the unknown. I'm interested. I'm open to
00:17:14.060 argument. I want to engage folks and I want to learn. I want to iterate. I have an entrepreneurial mindset. And to the
00:17:20.100 extent that brings me in the political conversation, I'm blessed by that. And to the extent it helps me
00:17:24.320 leverage my day job as government, all the better. The poll showing California voters are sharply
00:17:29.880 divided over Mr. Newsom based on their party ID. Seventy percent of Democrats approve of his performance.
00:17:36.820 Just 11 percent of Republicans say the same. And that'll do it for your AM update. I'm Megan Kelly.
