00:00:30.000 Good morning, everyone. I'm Megan Kelly. It's Wednesday, January 7th, 2026. And this is your

00:00:38.440 AM Update. Because if we don't win the midterms, I mean, they'll find a reason to impeach me.

00:00:44.060 President Trump has a warning for his GOP House colleagues as lawmakers gear up for the midterm

00:00:49.800 election season. Republican Congressman Doug LaMalfa unexpectedly passes away.

00:00:54.920 We need Greenland from a national security situation. It's so strategic.

00:01:01.520 The Trump administration accelerates its push to acquire Greenland one way or another.

00:01:07.340 And the Department of Homeland Security surges 2,000 agents to Minneapolis and St. Paul following

00:01:13.000 rampant fraud allegations among the Somali community. All that and more coming up in just 1.00

00:01:18.520 a moment on your AM Update. A new year means new financial goals like making sure your savings

00:01:28.060 are secure and diversified. Will this be the year you decide to talk to someone from Birch

00:01:32.400 Gold Group? They use an educational approach with a deep understanding of macroeconomics.

00:01:38.480 There are forces pushing the dollar lower and gold higher, which is why they believe every American

00:01:43.600 should own physical gold. So until January 30th, if you're a first-time gold buyer, Birch Gold is

00:02:08.300 now your first time to buy gold and take advantage of a rebate up to $10,000 when you buy

00:02:21.220 989898. President Trump yesterday delivering a start-of-the-year pep talk to House GOP members

00:02:29.880 as the 2026 midterm season is officially underway. The president openly acknowledging a hard political

00:02:36.840 reality. The party in power almost always struggles in the midterms following the presidential

00:02:42.900 election, often stalling the president's agenda. Rather than downplaying the risk, President Trump

00:02:48.580 framing it as an opportunity to make history, arguing that his first year in office has created

00:02:53.800 momentum he believes can lead to victory if Republicans deliver on core priorities.

00:02:58.820 And I want to wish everybody a happy new year, the most successful House Republican majority in

00:03:04.740 decades. And we did it with not a big majority. So together we had 12 months of unprecedented success

00:03:10.740 in 2025. And now we're going to make history and break records with the epic midterm victory that

00:03:17.420 we're going to pull off. It just doesn't seem to happen for people that win the presidency.

00:03:22.020 It's an amazing phenomenon. And we sure as hell are having a successful presidency. I will say that.

00:03:28.280 But even if it's successful, they don't win. I don't know what it is. It's something psychological.

00:03:34.240 President Trump urging lawmakers to focus on reminding voters of critical White House wins,

00:03:39.420 like securing the border and delivering most favored nation drug pricing, which lowers the cost of

00:03:45.320 prescription medications. Mr. Trump also imploring House members to bring a vote on federal voter ID

00:03:51.500 legislation. But we have to have voter ID. And you know, when you confront a Democrat about voter ID,

00:03:59.100 like in a debate or something, they're very embarrassed when they say, we want voter ID,

00:04:07.360 voter identification. The only reason somebody doesn't want that is because they want to cheat.

00:04:12.960 Our elections are crooked as hell. And you can win, not only win elections over that and not only win

00:04:19.340 future elections, but you'll win every debate because the public is really angry about it.

00:04:25.180 And you ought to, you ought to pass the SAFE Act or whatever you're going to call is, are we going to

00:04:30.520 SAVE Act or the SAVE America Act? I think we're going to change the name a little bit. You're going to put

00:04:34.760 that up for a vote. I think everybody in this room certainly should do it. And it's a bad vote for them.

00:04:40.640 But when somebody says, no, we don't want voter ID, that means they're crooked.

00:04:44.760 And the public understands it. You win elections with that.

00:04:47.860 Concerns about election integrity growing in recent years, fueled by COVID-era changes to voting

00:04:52.960 procedures, including expanded mail-in balloting. As of now, each state sets its own requirements,

00:04:58.880 deciding what, if any, ID is required to cast a vote. The SAVE Act would require voters to provide

00:05:04.760 proof of U.S. citizenship in order to vote in federal elections rather than simply attesting

00:05:10.020 to being a citizen. The president concluding his remarks with a warning about what's likely to come

00:05:15.240 if Democrats retake the House.

00:05:17.640 You got to win the midterms because if we don't win the midterms, it's just going to be, I mean,

00:05:23.960 they'll find a reason to impeach me. I'll get impeached. They are mean and smart,

00:05:30.180 but fortunately for you, they have horrible policy. We have great, solid, common sense policy.

00:05:38.740 They have horrendous policy. What they do is they stick together. They never have a no vote.

00:05:45.960 They impeached me. I never knew I was going to be impeached. I get a phone call. You just got

00:05:50.400 impeached. I said, what does that mean? It took them 10 minutes. They impeached the president.

00:05:56.800 Who did a damn good job? I rebuilt our military, Space Force. I got everything. I did a lot. 0.98

00:06:03.140 They impeached me for nothing, twice for nothing.

00:06:07.540 Some Democrats, including U.S. Congressman from New York, Dan Goldman, this week calling to impeach

00:06:12.180 the president over his arrest of Nicolas Maduro. A few Democrats also pushing last year to impeach

00:06:17.860 Secretary of War Pete Hegseth for ordering strikes on alleged drug vessels. House Minority Leader

00:06:23.840 Hakeem Jeffries at the time, saying he did not back the effort, as Democrats did not control the

00:06:28.500 House. The midterm election is set for Tuesday, November 3rd. U.S. Congressman from California,

00:06:37.240 Republican Doug LaMalfa, passing away unexpectedly yesterday at age 65. The Butte County Sheriff's

00:06:44.460 Office in Northern California, responding to a 911 call from his home in Richvale on Monday night.

00:06:50.700 Political reporting, the congressman suffered an aneurysm and a heart attack after being taken

00:06:55.860 into emergency surgery. Republicans close to Mr. LaMalfa reportedly unaware of any prior health issues

00:07:02.720 and shocked by the sudden passing of their colleague. The Butte County Sheriff's Office releasing a

00:07:08.020 statement, quote, in accordance with standard protocols, the coroner's unit is conducting an

00:07:12.860 investigation to determine the cause of death. The congressman, a fourth-generation rice farmer,

00:07:18.500 sat on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Agriculture Committee, and Natural

00:07:23.580 Resources Committee. Congressman Tim Burchett of Tennessee, a Republican, posting this tribute to

00:07:28.900 his colleague on X. I mean, this guy, salt of the earth, he was the epitome of what a true conservative

00:07:35.840 was. I can't tell you how devastating a blow this will be to his family and just Congress and

00:07:45.800 all of us. Anyway, say a prayer for his family, for some peace.

00:07:52.820 President Trump yesterday morning echoing a similar sentiment.

00:07:56.360 I want to express our tremendous sorrow at the loss of a great member, a great, great,

00:08:01.460 great member. Congressman Doug LaMalfa. He was the leader of the Western Caucus, a fierce

00:08:08.060 champion on California water issues, and a true defender of American children. He was a defender of

00:08:14.940 everybody. And our hearts go out to his wife, Jill, and his entire family. You know, he voted with me

00:08:20.660 100% of the time. Representative LaMalfa is survived by his wife, Jill, and four children,

00:08:26.700 and recently became a grandfather. LaMalfa's passing brings the already narrow GOP House

00:08:32.920 majority to an even tighter margin, Republicans now at 218 to Democrats 213. Under California law,

00:08:40.340 Governor Gavin Newsom has two weeks to call a special election to fill the seat held by Congressman

00:08:45.440 LaMalfa since 2013. Once announced, the election must be held within 140 days, potentially placing

00:08:52.660 the election in June. The recent passage of California's new congressional maps will likely

00:08:58.080 make it harder for a Republican to retain the seat in November's elections. Coming up, President Trump

00:09:05.480 is ready to take Greenland for real. And DHS surges agents into Minneapolis following reports of

00:09:12.240 extensive fraud allegedly perpetrated by its Somali community.

00:09:23.360 I've been talking a lot about Riverbend Ranch because I love their steaks. They have some

00:09:27.780 spectacular beef bundles that are wonderful gifts to friends and family. Their prime rib roast and

00:09:32.700 other bundles are only available while supplies last, and they are going fast. For the last 35 years,

00:09:38.380 Riverbend Ranch has been creating an elite Angus herd by using ultrasound technology to identify

00:09:43.560 genetically superior cattle with a focus on flavor and tenderness. They only use the top one or two

00:09:48.960 percent of the entire Angus population as their breeding stock, producing beef that has much more

00:09:54.620 flavor and tenderness than your average Angus beef. All Riverbend Ranch cattle are born and raised in the

00:09:59.300 USA, and the beef is processed right at the ranch in their award-winning USDA-inspected processing

00:10:05.120 facility. You avoid the costly middlemen because the beef is sent directly from Riverbend Ranch to

00:10:09.880 your home. Order from RiverbendRanch.com and use the promo code MEGAN for 20 bucks off your first order.

00:10:23.140 Fresh off a daring U.S. military read, plucking Venezuela's leader, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife,

00:10:29.080 Celia, out of their bedroom inside a secure facility, President Trump announcing last night that

00:10:34.380 he will be bringing some 30 to 50 million barrels of Venezuela's oil to the United States and selling

00:10:40.840 it. The president saying the oil will be sold at market price and that the proceeds will, quote,

00:10:46.180 be controlled by me as president of the United States of America to ensure it is used to benefit

00:10:52.260 the people of Venezuela and the U.S. The Wall Street Journal reporting that Mr. Trump will meet

00:10:58.400 with representatives from Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil, among others at the White House

00:11:03.820 Friday to, quote, discuss making significant investments in Venezuela's oil sector. President

00:11:10.060 Trump has his eye not only on Venezuelan oil, but also on Greenland. European leaders shuddering

00:11:16.660 as President Trump once again renews his focus on acquiring the Arctic territory. After the

00:11:22.760 Venezuela operation and the White House's new embrace of the Don Rowe Doctrine, or the right

00:11:28.280 to control the strategic direction of the Western Hemisphere, the Trump administration

00:11:32.280 showing it will not hesitate to act on matters it considers a priority. Secretary of State

00:11:37.760 Marco Rubio stating it plainly in the press conference following the Maduro mission.

00:11:42.140 We have a president. The 47th president of the United States is not a game player. When he tells

00:11:46.920 you that he's going to do something, when he tells you he's going to address a problem,

00:11:50.460 he means it. He actions it.

00:11:52.900 President Trump throughout the weekend putting a number of countries like Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico

00:11:57.760 on notice while adding this Sunday night aboard Air Force One.

00:12:01.540 I will say this about Greenland. We need Greenland from a national security situation. It's so

00:12:09.320 strategic. Right now, Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place.

00:12:15.800 We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security. And Denmark is not going to be able to do

00:12:22.120 what I can tell you. You know what Denmark did recently to boost up security in Greenland?

00:12:27.820 They added one more dog sled. It's true. They thought that was a great move. We need Greenland

00:12:35.020 from the standpoint of national security. And the European Union needs us to have it. And they know

00:12:41.540 that. Greenland, the world's largest island and semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of

00:12:46.700 Denmark sits at a strategic crossroads between North America and Europe, directly across the

00:12:52.300 Arctic Ocean from Russia. The U.S. currently operates a military base in Greenland, a key

00:12:57.500 site for missile warnings and defense, as well as space surveillance. Greenland is also home to

00:13:02.560 troves of natural resources, including untapped reserves of key rare-earth minerals, critical for

00:13:07.940 developing sophisticated electronics and military equipment, and major oil and gas reserves.

00:13:12.940 Last year, Denmark's prime minister offering to allow the U.S. to increase its military presence

00:13:18.700 in Greenland as a compromise. Political reporting yesterday, the offer has gained little traction.

00:13:24.600 A European defense official saying, quote, the White House is not interested. On Sunday,

00:13:29.780 the Danish prime minister releasing a statement, quote, it makes absolutely no sense to talk about

00:13:34.620 the need for the United States to take over Greenland. The U.S. has no right to annex one of the

00:13:39.800 three countries in the Danish realm. Press Secretary Caroline Levitt releasing a statement yesterday,

00:13:44.840 quote, the president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign

00:13:50.180 policy goal. And of course, utilizing the U.S. military is always an option at the commander-in-chief's

00:13:56.860 disposal. The clearest statement to date from the White House suggesting military force could be on the

00:14:02.740 table. The Wall Street Journal reporting Secretary Rubio told lawmakers yesterday morning that there is no

00:14:08.600 imminent invasion. Rather, the goal is to simply buy Greenland from Denmark. One official telling

00:14:14.920 Reuters a number of ideas are in consideration, including purchasing the territory or forming what's

00:14:20.300 known as a compact of free association with Greenland's government. The U.S. has similar agreements with

00:14:26.640 several other small island nations, allowing them to retain sovereignty while the U.S. controls their

00:14:31.980 defense policy and provides financial assistance. Denmark and Greenland yesterday requesting a meeting

00:14:38.260 with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, yet another job for the busy top diplomat.

00:14:44.160 2026, off to an exciting start.

00:14:47.620 The Department of Homeland Security conducting its largest operation ever in Minnesota.

00:14:53.480 On Sunday, DHS surging 2,000 additional ICE and Homeland Security investigations agents

00:14:59.220 focused on transnational crimes to Minneapolis and St. Paul. The influx coming after weeks of reporting

00:15:05.660 on what some are calling the largest fraud scheme in history, allegedly perpetrated largely by members

00:15:10.940 of Minnesota's Somali community. Prosecutors estimating the fraud could amount to $9 billion,

00:15:16.840 though President Trump earlier this week suggesting the number might be far higher.

00:15:21.580 A late December report by independent journalist Nick Shirley going mega viral, exposing Somali-run daycare and

00:15:28.400 health centers in Minneapolis, allegedly receiving millions in taxpayer funding while seemingly providing

00:15:34.480 few, if any, services. The scandal reaching a fever pitch in Minnesota, prompting Governor Tim

00:15:40.560 Walsh, a Democrat, to drop his bid for a third term. On Tuesday morning, Homeland Security Secretary

00:15:45.980 Kristi Noem rolling into Minnesota to personally oversee the operation, which is expected to last 30 days,

00:15:52.560 per CBS News. DHS posting videos showing dozens of heavily armed agents rounding up suspected illegal

00:15:59.780 immigrants for processing. The Daily Wire reports ICE is positioning planes to quickly fly detainees from

00:16:06.100 Minnesota to other parts of the country that have available detention space for deportation.

00:16:11.260 Governor Walsh yesterday at a press conference on his decision to end his re-election campaign,

00:16:16.140 slamming the operation.

00:16:17.280 The war that's being waged against Minnesota, you're seeing it. We have a

00:16:21.000 ridiculous surge of apparently 2,000 people not coordinating with us that are for a show of

00:16:26.680 the cameras. We are under assault like no other time in our state's history because of a petty, 0.90

00:16:35.400 vile administration that doesn't care about the well-being of Minnesotans. 0.66

00:16:40.600 CBS News echoing additional criticism from Governor Walsh, pressing Secretary Noem without a

00:16:46.200 hint of irony on whether such a large operation is a responsible use of taxpayer dollars.

00:16:53.300 2,000 agents is enormous.

00:16:55.920 It is.

00:16:56.320 How do you justify that to the American taxpayer?

00:16:59.580 The American taxpayer is grateful that that resource allocation has been put here.

00:17:04.880 We've never seen this kind of fraudulent and abuse of programs before in recent history.

00:17:13.400 News Nation reporting nearly 34,000 illegal immigrants in Minnesota have been given final

00:17:19.180 orders of removal, meaning they've been ordered by a judge to get out, but they're still here.

00:17:25.120 Approximately 11,000 of those have criminal convictions.

00:17:28.500 And that'll do it for your AM update. I'm Megan Kelly. Join me back here for the MK Show,
