00:05:29.400 So on Juneteenth, the 19th of June, Union Army Major General Gordon Granger marched down to Galveston.

00:05:36.280 He proclaimed all the good news that the Confederate slaves were freed.

00:05:40.100 You know, there were 3.1 million slaves in the Confederate states,

00:48:40.100 signed I looked at it the day

00:48:41.940 after the wedding to make sure

00:48:43.120 everything had been filled out

00:48:50.200 it said spouse one and spouse two and

00:50:30.740 involved in in pro-life work for almost

00:50:33.860 40 years I've written a lot of stuff on

00:50:37.920 this I've made a lot of arguments I am

00:50:42.420 willing to recognize that what has really

00:50:44.820 turned this around is the sonogram is is

00:50:50.320 technology which makes it impossible for

00:50:54.580 the other side to say this is the

00:50:59.080 equivalent of an appendix or a tumor this

00:51:03.080 is this is not that and you can see that

00:51:05.840 so we need to figure out the imagery side of

00:51:11.700 of other issues we also need to keep calm

00:51:16.420 we don't have to debase the public

00:51:21.220 conversation the way this resistance

00:51:24.340 nonsense does we have to be the people

00:51:28.240 of lucidity and reason and good manners

00:51:32.800 and hope that over time that will have an

00:51:36.960 effect people don't like to be shouted

00:52:31.880 reasonable measure so it's never it's never

00:52:38.260 give up time we've been through some very

00:52:42.100 rough patches in this country before and I

00:52:46.200 think part of the shrill and shrillness and

00:52:52.400 hysteria of the present moment particularly

00:52:55.440 among younger people has something to do with

00:52:58.960 the profound ignorance of history that that is

00:53:04.880 now part of the the public landscape when when half of

00:53:08.720 American college graduates last year did not know that

00:53:11.600 Franklin D Roosevelt was the president during the second

00:53:14.880 world war how do we expect them to know that there was a

00:53:18.880 huge mess in this country between 1850 and 1860 or that the

00:53:24.160 country was really on its knocked back on its heels during the

00:53:28.720 Great Depression and so forth and so on a recovery of of the

00:53:34.720 story the story of America which includes the story of American

00:53:39.040 renewal there's immense there are immense sources of renewal in this

00:53:44.080 country and we should tap those that is such an important

00:53:48.800 point the narrative the the from all the way from the

00:53:51.920 sonogram to the narrative we live our lives in narrative we live

00:53:54.880 our lives in a story and when you can illuminate that story then

00:53:59.040 you appear as you say happy and joyful and attractive and

00:54:02.880 that's pretty good I like a world that's happy joyful

00:54:05.040 attractive and increasingly female that's a good world to me and a

00:54:08.160 good note of hope to end on I've got to let you go I've taken up
