The Michael Knowles Show - Ep. 169 - Zero Tolerance： Time To Separate Fake Republicans From Their Party

00:00:00.000 Nervous about financing a renovation or move?

00:00:03.260 TD can help ease those butterflies with renovations.

00:00:07.760 Refinancing can help you keep the home you love while increasing its value.

00:00:12.140 And although moving comes with new costs, like closing fees,

00:00:15.540 it might be the perfect next step.

00:00:18.540 Ready to hear more?

00:00:20.980 Request a calming call with TD Mortgage Direct and say hello to good advice.

00:00:30.000 There is an important and official announcement today on Michael Knoll's show, Policy.

00:00:35.520 We have always had a zero-tolerance policy on this show for fake Republicans and totally contrived non-troversies.

00:00:43.560 But I haven't always enforced the law.

00:00:45.680 And this has created a perverse incentive for the squishes of our party to gin up fake news. 0.95

00:00:51.240 So today, to show our seriousness about tackling this problem,

00:00:54.860 we will separate fake Republicans from their party as well as fake news from reality.

00:01:01.120 Then, theologian George Weigel joins the show to discuss chaos, order, and our turbulent times.

00:01:06.720 Speaking of turbulence, soccer fans in Mexico caused an earthquake during the World Cup.

00:01:12.520 Daily Wire 2 sports analyst Jeremy the God King Boring will join the show to discuss the suburban fallout.

00:01:18.660 Finally, it's Juneteenth on This Day in History.

00:01:21.140 I'm Michael Knowles, and this is The Michael Knowles Show.

00:01:24.860 Do you know what other time it is?

00:01:32.260 There's so much going on that we have to talk about.

00:01:34.880 It's also time to join the conversation.

00:01:36.900 On Tuesday, June 19th, by my calculations, that is tomorrow at 5.30 Eastern, 2.30 Pacific,

00:01:42.960 Ben Shapiro, the big boss himself, will answer your questions.

00:01:46.420 Moderated by the beautiful and dauntless Alicia Krauss.

00:01:49.800 The Q&A will stream live on YouTube and Facebook for everyone to watch.

00:01:53.280 But only Daily Wire subscribers can ask Ben questions.

00:01:57.040 Many are called, but few are chosen.

00:01:58.780 To submit your questions, log in to dailywire.com and head over to the conversation page to watch the live stream.

00:02:05.040 Type your question into the Daily Wire chat box and have it read and answered live on the air.

00:02:10.620 Once again, subscribe to get your questions answered by the big boss himself, Ben Shapiro.

00:02:15.420 Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 19th, tomorrow, 5.30 Eastern, 2.30 Pacific, and join the conversation.

00:02:22.360 Look, there is so much fake news and so many fake Republicans stabbing their fellow partisans in the back today.

00:02:30.660 Before we get to that, let's talk about something nice because, you know, it's really frustrating when this happens.

00:02:35.120 I want to talk about something nice.

00:02:36.320 I love these guys.

00:02:37.140 You can probably see I'm wearing it.

00:02:38.680 Peter Millar.

00:02:40.360 Peter Millar is my favorite clothing.

00:02:43.480 That's it.

00:02:44.380 I know some of you saw me without any clothing in that ad for the conversation a little while ago.

00:02:49.240 You can thank Peter Millar that I'm now wearing clothing and saving all of your eyes.

00:02:53.420 I love it.

00:02:53.880 It is my favorite clothing, bar none, period.

00:02:56.240 Peter Millar was founded in 2001 with a single cashmere sweater.

00:02:59.440 It's grown into a premium American lifestyle brand featuring a wide range of casual sportswear, tailored menswear, and luxury performance golf apparel.

00:03:07.900 Peter Millar's comfort, fit, quality, and style are all setting the standard in menswear.

00:03:12.180 You see what I'm wearing here?

00:03:13.380 It's a nice white with navy checked sports shirt, you know, buttoned down, Oxford buttoned down.

00:03:18.700 It is the best.

00:03:20.120 And one of the reasons is if you're like me, you might perspire a little bit.

00:03:24.700 For a lot of people, it's because they're playing golf or they're out there working out or they're exercising or it's a hot day, whatever.

00:03:29.700 Me, I'm of Sicilian heritage, so I sweat in freezers.

00:03:33.840 You know, I could go into an industrial freezer.

00:03:35.440 I'd still be sweating.

00:03:36.860 With Peter Millar, you don't really see that.

00:03:38.620 You don't sweat through the clothing.

00:03:39.700 It's so nice, so comfortable, and you won't look like a big, you know, sweaty gavon all day.

00:03:45.180 Really, really good.

00:03:47.000 So I highly recommend it.

00:03:49.060 I have their stuff.

00:03:50.420 I wore it all the time on my honeymoon.

00:03:52.200 I wear it all the time now that I'm back.

00:03:54.540 These are, this is also the most comfortable shirt I've ever worn.

00:03:57.720 It's tailored right to your body.

00:03:59.380 I can't say enough about Peter Millar.

00:04:01.120 Right now, go to PeterMillar.com slash Covfefe, C-O-V-F-E-F-E.

00:04:05.920 Check out some of my Peter Millar favorites.

00:04:07.940 Be sure to use my link.

00:04:08.940 You will receive complimentary shipping and a free hat.

00:04:13.240 That's important, by the way.

00:04:14.280 On my honeymoon, I got a sunburn on my scalp, and I have a lot of hair.

00:04:17.980 It's a little perk, but you get free shipping.

00:04:20.020 Go try them out.

00:04:20.820 It is my favorite clothing.

00:04:22.660 PeterMillar, M-I-L-L-A-R.com slash Covfefe.

00:04:26.260 PeterMillar.com slash Covfefe, C-O-V-F-E-F-E.

00:04:31.300 Happy Father's Day, everybody.

00:04:32.900 It was Father's Day over the weekend.

00:04:34.640 I did, we did that round table, obviously, Daily Wire backstage.

00:04:38.720 We were smoking cigars and drinking whiskey and hanging out with the fathers.

00:04:41.400 You can go check that out online.

00:04:43.060 Also, I was pleased to be at Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson's event,

00:04:47.120 his men's conference for his organization, Bond.

00:04:49.620 We talked about, you know, the difference between alpha males and beta males.

00:04:54.280 I kind of reject that language broadly, but it was a good discussion.

00:04:57.640 I'm sure you can check that out, too.

00:04:59.560 Today's also Juneteenth.

00:05:01.100 Nobody celebrates Juneteenth.

00:05:03.200 People don't hear about it anymore, especially if you grew up in New York like I did.

00:05:07.120 You don't really hear about it.

00:05:09.180 Juneteenth is to celebrate the emancipation of the slaves throughout the Confederacy.

00:05:14.060 So the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln in 1862,

00:05:18.540 went into effect right at the beginning of 1863.

00:05:21.540 But because all those Democrat states were revolting against America,

00:05:26.100 they didn't pay much heed to what Mr. Lincoln had to say.

00:05:29.400 So on Juneteenth, the 19th of June, Union Army Major General Gordon Granger marched down to Galveston.

00:05:36.280 He proclaimed all the good news that the Confederate slaves were freed.

00:05:40.100 You know, there were 3.1 million slaves in the Confederate states,

00:05:43.480 and everybody was very happy.

00:05:45.900 Not as happy as the Mexican soccer fans, but they were happy.

00:05:48.440 And so, you know, people don't talk about this anymore, I think,

00:05:51.740 because what the Democrats want to do is convince everybody that they're slaves still.

00:05:57.520 They don't want to let people know that Republicans freed all their slaves.

00:06:00.600 So they want you to think that there's this awful oppression

00:06:03.440 and that you're really enslaved and you can't do anything.

00:06:05.960 But it's always important to celebrate emancipation and liberty.

00:06:09.440 It's essential to the American project.

00:06:11.680 And God wants you to be free, and we should remind people that they are free.

00:06:14.760 Okay, so I really want to get to the meat of this show today,

00:06:18.780 how these Republicans are pulling their knives out against Donald Trump

00:06:21.940 because they're fake Republicans and they're spreading fake news 0.59

00:06:24.620 about the immigration policies at the border and the separation of children.

00:06:28.580 And Donald Trump's, you know, he's like worse than Hitler or whatever they're saying.

00:06:32.060 Before we get to that, though, the huge sports news over the weekend.

00:06:34.860 I'm sure you were following major, major sports news.

00:06:38.180 So we turn now to our sister network, Daily Wire 2,

00:06:41.180 and a sports analyst, Jeremy, the God King, Boring.

00:06:51.500 Bam! Thank you, Michael.

00:06:53.340 Jeremy, what happened?

00:06:54.620 Michael, this weekend saw the most important event in socialist sport

00:06:57.920 since the soup lines at the gulags.

00:06:59.920 It's the greatest four-year plan since Stalin himself.

00:07:02.580 I'm talking about the FIFA FOA World Cup.

00:07:05.200 It's that special time every four years

00:07:06.620 when Americans pretend they care about soccer,

00:07:08.520 even though I dare a single one of them to name more than three retired players

00:07:12.500 over the age of 12 from anywhere on Earth.

00:07:15.440 The big news of the weekend, of course, Mexico.

00:07:17.480 GDP $1.04 trillion, scoring their worst upset over Germany.

00:07:21.940 GDP $3.46 trillion since the Zimmerman Telegram.

00:07:25.960 Mexico delivered with a 1-0 nail-biter

00:07:29.120 that CBS Sports' Roger Gonzalez called a tense, hectic match

00:07:33.120 that would make anybody shake from the nerves.

00:07:35.400 Germany, heavily favored to win not only the match but the entire World Cup

00:07:39.540 before, you know, Mexico scored one single goal,

00:07:43.480 swore that it will rise up only one generation hence

00:07:46.040 and establish a right that will last 1,000 years.

00:07:48.720 In other notable matches from the opening weekend,

00:07:51.500 the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism, Iran, GDP $393 billion,

00:07:56.400 won only their second match in World Cup history,

00:07:59.400 handily defeating Morocco, GDP $1.01 billion in Group B, 1-0.

00:08:04.700 And I thought Iran didn't have nukes.

00:08:06.840 Am I right? Right?

00:08:08.560 Hey, Michael. Hey, Michael.

00:08:10.600 Michael. Hey, Michael.

00:08:13.160 Michael.

00:08:14.920 Right?

00:08:16.400 And finally, in a match that Sportsnet is calling a game for the ages,

00:08:20.640 Portugal, GDP $204 billion, managed to tie neighboring Spain GDP $1.232 trillion

00:08:27.460 in the Iberians' peninsula's most engrossing conflict since, insert Hemingway joke.

00:08:33.620 Women and beta males all over America responded to the match,

00:08:37.180 which perfectly encapsulates everything they love about soccer,

00:08:40.020 from the complete lack of tension or action,

00:08:42.320 to the total absence of any personal narrative or individual accomplishments,

00:08:45.680 and almost immeasurably small score, with a resounding,

00:08:48.700 No, I really love football.

00:08:50.980 The whole world loves football.

00:08:52.580 Why can't you just agree with us about football?

00:08:54.680 Football players are cute.

00:08:56.240 Four billion people can't be wrong about football. 0.99

00:08:58.320 America is evil.

00:08:59.320 This is why you got Trump.

00:09:00.900 The final score was 3-3,

00:09:02.920 representing fully 50% of the total points scored in the World Cup to date.

00:09:07.100 And that's your Daily Wire 2 weekend World Cup update.

00:09:10.760 Be sure to tune in tomorrow or next week,

00:09:12.660 or whenever we get around to doing this joke again. 0.99

00:09:15.200 Seriously, this crap's going to last an entire month. 0.99

00:09:17.580 Michael, bam! 1.00

00:09:18.480 Back to you.

00:09:19.640 Bam, Jeremy.

00:09:20.720 That was a rousing, rousing analysis.

00:09:23.800 Thank you so much.

00:09:24.540 That almost managed to keep me awake.

00:09:26.980 So it's a real advantage.

00:09:28.880 Thank you so much for watching that.

00:09:30.820 You know, a lot of big news.

00:09:32.360 There was that man-made earthquake by the soccer fans.

00:09:35.240 I didn't watch it, Michael.

00:09:38.300 Good God, man.

00:09:40.060 Well, God King, Jeremy Boring, Daily Wire 2 sports analyst,

00:09:43.740 thank you so much for your report.

00:09:46.060 And we look forward to you not watching more World Cup games

00:09:49.360 and coming back to tell us about them.

00:09:50.820 That would truly be my pleasure.

00:09:52.960 Jeremy the God King Boring, Daily Wire 2.

00:09:55.340 It's always great when we can get our sister network in here

00:09:57.340 to start reporting on things like that.

00:09:59.580 Really, really good, okay?

00:10:01.980 I don't know how he got through that with mostly a straight face.

00:10:05.600 So I think I just lost half my audience, by the way.

00:10:07.840 So now we've got to get to the meat of this.

00:10:10.880 The GOP, these Republicans, this is what they do.

00:10:14.680 They go on TV, and they're Republican strategists

00:10:17.260 or they're former Republican politicians or whatever.

00:10:20.300 They are coming out against Donald, the Trump administration

00:10:23.380 and against Donald Trump himself.

00:10:25.460 Here is why Republicans are attacking the president.

00:10:29.960 You know, jobless rates at an almost historic low.

00:10:33.860 Economy's ticking pretty well.

00:10:36.120 Stock market's up.

00:10:37.180 Oh, no, that, no, I don't think that's why.

00:10:40.900 No, I was talking about that really controversial policy

00:10:43.680 that every, you know, that's in the news

00:10:45.120 because it's in all the headlines.

00:10:46.480 That really, really controversial policy.

00:10:48.220 Can we play that?

00:10:49.900 I congratulate South Korea and North Korea

00:10:52.080 on their historic meeting last month.

00:10:54.300 The United States is encouraged by President Moon

00:10:56.500 and Chairman Kim's stated goal of complete denuclearization

00:10:59.420 in the Panmunjom Declaration.

00:11:01.500 Guys, this is really undercutting the ridiculous narrative 0.95

00:11:05.200 that fake Republicans are trying to create 0.96

00:11:06.940 in the mainstream media.

00:11:07.880 Can we, can we please finally roll the clip

00:11:10.020 of that terrible, horrible thing

00:11:11.600 that Donald Trump is doing on our border?

00:11:14.240 Illegal immigration down. 0.98

00:11:16.180 Illegal immigration down. 0.98

00:11:18.340 50, 60%, that's correct.

00:11:20.320 Yeah.

00:11:20.980 I mean, thoughts.

00:11:23.420 Thoughts.

00:11:24.680 That's a good question.

00:11:25.880 That's, that's not the one either, is it?

00:11:27.600 So why are these Republicans turning on Donald Trump?

00:11:30.360 Why, and they're getting all these plaudits

00:11:32.420 from the mainstream media.

00:11:33.700 Listen, I know it has to be happening

00:11:35.140 because the New York Times told me so.

00:11:37.160 The New York Times ran a headline, quote,

00:11:38.960 leading Republicans join Democrats

00:11:41.280 in pushing Trump to halt family separations.

00:11:45.960 Now, what is this?

00:11:47.140 You've got to go through the language word by word here

00:11:49.660 because when you read it, it is so absurd,

00:11:52.160 not only that a New York Times writer

00:11:53.540 could write these things,

00:11:54.540 but that an editor could let it go through,

00:11:56.420 that people believe this kind of stuff.

00:11:58.840 This is what the New York Times says, quote,

00:12:00.360 By laying responsibility for the situation on both sides,

00:12:04.620 Mrs. Trump, Melania Trump,

00:12:06.400 effectively echoed her husband's assertion

00:12:08.540 that it was the result of a law written by Democrats.

00:12:11.860 In fact, the administration announced

00:12:13.980 a zero-tolerance approach this spring

00:12:16.920 leading to the separations.

00:12:19.360 Now, listen to that.

00:12:20.000 They're saying, they're saying this happened,

00:12:22.060 but really it's this.

00:12:23.240 And so the allegation here is,

00:12:25.600 they're, Republicans are saying,

00:12:27.840 this is an old policy that was written

00:12:29.880 in part by Democrats and Democrat judges,

00:12:31.700 but really, Republicans are now enforcing the law.

00:12:35.700 Those aren't conflicting statements.

00:12:37.520 Those statements make perfect sense.

00:12:39.300 There were Democrat laws.

00:12:40.860 There were laws passed by both parties

00:12:42.420 that have to do with how we process people at the border.

00:12:46.180 There were rulings made by left-wing judges

00:12:48.400 on the Ninth Circuit,

00:12:50.440 and then the Democrats refused to enforce the law

00:12:52.240 because they're an utterly lawless party,

00:12:54.680 and Republicans are enforcing the law

00:12:56.380 that was passed by our representatives,

00:12:58.060 duly passed by our legislature,

00:12:59.580 and that's supposed to be in conflict somehow.

00:13:02.140 That's not in conflict at all.

00:13:03.640 The Trump administration is just finally enforcing the law.

00:13:06.340 We'll get to more of that later.

00:13:08.180 Before we do that,

00:13:08.960 we've got to make a little money, honey.

00:13:09.880 We've got to talk about AIG Travel Guard.

00:13:12.020 We have a new sponsor.

00:13:13.100 Here is AIG Travel Guard.

00:13:15.380 Message and data rates may apply.

00:13:16.500 Please do not text and drive.

00:13:17.380 Insurance offered by Travel Guard Group, Inc.,

00:13:22.280 limitations, and exclusions,

00:13:23.140 go to TravelGuard.com.

00:13:24.080 This ad does not describe actual events

00:13:25.240 and is used for illustrative purposes only.

00:13:26.720 So that actually, I had to record that early

00:13:28.680 because that's my really smoky, sultry voice

00:13:30.640 that I do really quick, you know?

00:13:32.660 So I really like these guys.

00:13:34.940 AIG Travel Guard, this is really important.

00:13:37.420 You know, there are a lot of summer travel plans

00:13:39.280 going on right now.

00:13:40.200 I travel a fair bit,

00:13:41.540 and in the summer,

00:13:42.320 I try to get away a little bit

00:13:43.440 to just go have some fun, you know,

00:13:45.780 hang out with my brand new,

00:13:47.340 sweet little Mrs. Knowles.

00:13:48.760 And I've got to tell you something.

00:13:50.480 I have lost thousands of dollars in my life.

00:13:53.560 This is no joke.

00:13:54.380 Thousands of dollars

00:13:55.200 because I didn't purchase travel insurance.

00:13:58.140 And, you know,

00:13:58.540 because I'm flying around a fair bit

00:13:59.980 and I've got to go visit this place.

00:14:01.040 And sometimes plans change.

00:14:02.600 Sometimes someone gets sick, whatever.

00:14:04.140 And I've lost so much money

00:14:06.660 because I don't want to pay that little extra bit

00:14:08.720 for the travel insurance.

00:14:09.920 And then my whole flight,

00:14:11.740 my whole trip gets sunk

00:14:13.500 and I lose a lot of money.

00:14:14.860 Don't be like me.

00:14:16.300 I mean, I'm not going to make that mistake again.

00:15:11.700 Text Michael, M-I-C-H-A-E-L,

00:15:13.600 to 484848.

00:15:15.000 That's Michael to 484848.

00:15:17.440 M-I-C-H-A-E-L, 1.00

00:15:19.120 to 484848.

00:15:21.320 Okay.

00:15:22.400 I want to get to a little bit more of this.

00:15:24.220 So, the New York Times

00:15:25.060 just totally ginning this up out of nowhere.

00:15:27.460 They're saying there is a law

00:15:28.520 and Trump is enforcing the law.

00:15:30.800 And the law was passed a long time ago

00:15:32.280 and Trump is enforcing the law.

00:15:33.780 By the way, other people have enforced it at times too.

00:15:35.920 And for some reason, that's horrible.

00:15:37.500 And, you know, he's Hitler 0.94

00:15:38.460 because everyone who disagrees with me is Hitler, 0.71

00:15:40.460 according to the New York Times.

00:15:41.860 The New York Times goes on in this piece.

00:15:43.200 Previous administrations made exceptions

00:15:44.940 to such prosecutions for adults

00:15:46.560 traveling with minor children.

00:15:48.380 But the Trump administration

00:15:49.320 has said it will not do so.

00:15:51.940 Listen to that.

00:15:52.700 Made exceptions.

00:15:54.700 Now, it sounds like that's a really nice...

00:15:55.960 Oh, it's so accommodating.

00:15:56.980 It's so nice and thoughtful

00:15:58.800 and accommodating and compassionate

00:16:00.200 when our law enforcement

00:16:02.000 doesn't enforce the law.

00:16:03.560 I mean, you know,

00:16:04.160 the people who...

00:16:05.540 We, the people,

00:16:06.360 still theoretically control this country.

00:16:08.040 We've passed laws.

00:16:10.500 We've...

00:16:10.800 Our duly elected representatives

00:16:12.060 have passed laws.

00:16:13.300 But it's so nice.

00:16:14.920 Isn't it so nice

00:16:15.820 when the government refuses

00:16:16.960 to enforce the laws

00:16:17.740 that the people have passed?

00:16:18.800 That's what they're trying to say.

00:16:20.200 So, what's the difference here?

00:16:23.120 Rich Lowry has a really good piece on this,

00:16:25.420 on these...

00:16:25.900 Those images of the babies

00:16:27.500 being ripped from their mother.

00:16:28.980 All the stuff Tom Arnold

00:16:29.800 was talking about on the show

00:16:30.880 the other day.

00:16:32.420 The reason that you're seeing this now...

00:16:34.380 more now,

00:16:34.940 really,

00:16:35.420 is just because there's a Republican in office.

00:16:36.920 But in the old days,

00:16:38.500 most illegal immigration

00:16:40.000 on our southern border

00:16:41.520 was single males from Mexico

00:16:43.140 and they were coming to get jobs.

00:16:44.620 Now, over the last 10, 15 years,

00:16:46.320 that has shifted dramatically

00:16:47.320 to be more families,

00:16:49.080 women and children

00:16:49.840 coming from Central America.

00:16:51.480 Why is that?

00:16:52.360 Because we've created

00:16:53.500 a system of incentives

00:16:54.880 where we weren't prosecuting families.

00:16:57.180 So, guess what happens?

00:16:58.240 The road to hell

00:16:58.880 is paved with good intentions.

00:17:00.220 All of a sudden,

00:17:00.800 you get more families,

00:17:01.660 more young children

00:17:02.300 being caught up

00:17:03.120 in this awful,

00:17:04.180 depraved,

00:17:04.920 criminal enterprise

00:17:05.920 to cross the border illegally.

00:17:08.620 Another thing that changed

00:17:09.640 is largely

00:17:10.840 in previous administrations,

00:17:12.400 we ignored the law.

00:17:13.960 We just said,

00:17:14.280 that's okay.

00:17:14.660 It doesn't matter.

00:17:15.680 We don't need to have a border.

00:17:16.740 You can come through.

00:17:17.380 That's fine.

00:17:17.960 Now we're enforcing the law.

00:17:19.700 Also, by the way,

00:17:20.580 the reason for this

00:17:22.440 is the courts,

00:17:24.640 especially the Ninth Circuit,

00:17:25.980 but also other laws.

00:17:27.380 So, when these families

00:17:28.760 cross the border illegally,

00:17:30.220 the parents are taken in

00:17:31.760 by U.S. Marshals

00:17:32.500 because they've committed a crime

00:17:33.560 and they're not supposed to be here.

00:17:34.600 The children are not taken in

00:17:36.080 by U.S. Marshals

00:17:36.860 because they're children.

00:17:38.180 You can't hold them accountable

00:17:38.940 for the crime.

00:17:39.560 They were just brought along.

00:17:40.620 So, they're taken in

00:17:41.420 by Health and Human Services.

00:17:42.720 They're put in temporary shelters.

00:17:44.040 This is not a new policy.

00:17:45.360 This has been going on

00:17:45.980 for a long time,

00:17:46.960 including the Obama administration.

00:17:49.060 Now, what happens at this point

00:17:50.660 is there are criminal proceedings

00:17:52.680 for the parents.

00:17:54.140 This usually happens

00:17:55.160 very, very quickly.

00:17:56.500 It can happen same day

00:17:57.800 where the parents

00:17:58.740 go before the judge.

00:17:59.780 They plead guilty.

00:18:01.200 They are sentenced

00:18:02.260 to time served

00:18:03.380 because we're a very

00:18:04.080 compassionate country.

00:18:05.260 So, we say,

00:18:05.660 it's okay.

00:18:05.960 We're not going to keep you in jail.

00:18:07.320 You can now choose

00:18:08.580 to leave the country

00:18:09.360 and you'll reunite

00:18:10.360 with your kids today,

00:18:12.140 same day.

00:18:12.960 The parents have that ability

00:18:14.480 to do that.

00:18:16.000 Now, where it gets

00:18:16.860 a little wonky

00:18:17.480 is if they start

00:18:18.280 to demand asylum

00:18:19.780 or appeal it

00:18:21.100 or say,

00:18:21.480 we want to stick around

00:18:23.320 for a while

00:18:23.800 because according

00:18:25.340 to the Flores Consent Decree

00:18:27.720 of 1997,

00:18:29.120 kids can only be held

00:18:30.100 for 20 days.

00:18:31.460 So, after that,

00:18:32.340 they have to be separated.

00:18:34.000 So, the Ninth Circuit

00:18:36.300 ensured that we can't

00:18:39.220 hold family units

00:18:40.540 together here.

00:18:41.460 That's the trouble.

00:18:42.960 There's leftist judges

00:18:43.820 on the Ninth Circuit

00:18:44.940 said that we can't

00:18:45.560 hold them all together

00:18:46.140 because either you're

00:18:47.080 holding them

00:18:47.420 with the criminal parents

00:18:48.340 or you're just going

00:18:50.100 to let the parents go.

00:18:51.000 Those are the two choices

00:18:51.840 you have.

00:18:52.340 And everyone who's

00:18:53.380 trying to grandstand

00:18:55.640 on this issue,

00:18:56.440 those are your choices.

00:18:57.600 Are you going to put

00:18:58.680 the kids in

00:18:59.180 with the criminal parents

00:19:00.080 because then you're

00:19:00.760 going to have

00:19:00.900 to change the law

00:19:01.600 or are you going

00:19:02.880 to just not prosecute

00:19:04.260 illegal aliens

00:19:04.940 and disregard federal law,

00:19:07.060 overturn federal law,

00:19:08.000 say we have an open border,

00:19:08.920 we don't have any border at all.

00:19:10.240 Those are your two choices.

00:19:11.520 You have just those two choices.

00:19:13.800 Now, fake Republicans

00:19:14.800 are coming out

00:19:15.300 of the woodwork

00:19:15.820 to use this

00:19:16.260 as an opportunity

00:19:16.940 to gut the

00:19:18.560 president and administration.

00:19:19.900 Here is a guy

00:19:20.480 named Evan Siegfried.

00:19:22.320 We'll talk a little bit

00:19:23.380 more about him after.

00:19:24.200 Here is Evan Siegfried

00:19:25.220 on MSNBC.

00:19:25.980 And you know what?

00:19:27.200 Kirstjen Nielsen

00:19:27.940 tweeted out last night 0.93

00:19:29.060 that ridiculous tweet 0.98

00:19:30.500 that we were not

00:19:32.180 having this policy.

00:19:33.460 But on May 10th

00:19:34.240 in an interview with NPR,

00:19:35.740 she talked about the policy

00:19:36.900 and said how great it was

00:19:38.000 and how she was

00:19:38.580 going to implement it. 0.92

00:19:39.400 So she's either a liar 0.99

00:19:40.500 or suffering from severe 1.00

00:19:41.700 mental or memory loss.

00:19:43.860 And we talk about

00:19:45.000 how President Trump

00:19:45.800 wants to make America

00:19:46.600 strong and great again.

00:19:47.820 Our greatness

00:19:48.600 and our strength

00:19:49.500 comes from our morality

00:19:51.160 and our compassion.

00:19:52.560 And this administration

00:19:53.340 is absolutely devoid of it.

00:19:55.180 It is absolutely infuriating.

00:19:57.340 But Evan, how does this

00:19:57.760 help America?

00:19:58.860 I don't put my hat on

00:19:59.820 from a fiscal perspective.

00:20:01.240 I put my hat on

00:20:02.260 from a moral perspective.

00:20:03.440 Anthony Scaramucci

00:20:04.200 this morning was saying,

00:20:05.280 well, the president

00:20:05.740 will probably reverse

00:20:06.600 because it's just bad optics.

00:20:08.260 Not bad optics.

00:20:09.640 Mooch, he was in the White House

00:20:10.840 for 11 days

00:20:11.420 and I know he wants to become

00:20:12.500 the next James Carville.

00:20:13.780 But that doesn't qualify him

00:20:15.140 to recognize

00:20:15.900 or fail to recognize

00:20:17.040 that it's bad morality.

00:20:18.760 It shows us to be

00:20:19.880 an uncompassionate

00:20:20.940 and immoral people

00:20:22.020 and it also sends

00:20:23.240 a terrible signal

00:20:24.140 to the rest of the world.

00:20:25.620 With Republicans

00:20:26.300 like this guy

00:20:27.020 who needs Democrats,

00:20:28.360 this is the worst 0.94

00:20:29.300 kind of Republican. 0.99

00:20:30.380 It is so deceptive 0.94

00:20:31.740 and so treacherous

00:20:32.880 and so backstabbing.

00:20:35.500 I refer to guys

00:20:36.720 like Evan

00:20:37.300 as Republican

00:20:38.300 but not that kind

00:20:39.020 of Republicans.

00:20:40.440 You know,

00:20:40.880 the ones who all they want

00:20:41.960 is MSNBC's approval.

00:20:43.700 They're the good ones.

00:20:44.660 They're not like those bad ones.

00:20:45.720 They're the good ones.

00:20:46.640 Like, what do you want?

00:20:47.820 Are you trying

00:20:48.340 to have liberty?

00:20:49.200 Are you trying

00:20:49.620 to support liberty?

00:20:50.380 Are you trying

00:20:50.680 to support the United States?

00:20:51.980 Are you just trying

00:20:52.520 to get famous 0.98

00:20:53.040 by stabbing 0.99

00:20:53.740 your ostensible friends 0.99

00:20:54.880 in the back? 0.99

00:20:55.600 Absolutely disgusting.

00:20:56.880 And as for your moral argument,

00:20:58.360 Evan Siegfried,

00:20:59.500 according to Fusion

00:21:00.440 and Amnesty International,

00:21:01.600 60 to 80% of women

00:21:02.880 and girls

00:21:03.240 who cross the border

00:21:04.200 illegally 0.99

00:21:04.660 are raped on that journey. 0.81

00:21:06.100 What is compassionate?

00:21:07.140 What is moral

00:21:08.280 about incentivizing

00:21:09.400 and encouraging

00:21:10.000 that system?

00:21:11.000 Because you have that

00:21:11.960 on your hands, buddy,

00:21:13.180 Evan.

00:21:13.660 If you are saying

00:21:15.660 that we shouldn't

00:21:16.420 be prosecuting,

00:21:17.280 we should be creating

00:21:18.080 incentives for these

00:21:19.780 young women

00:21:20.520 and young girls

00:21:21.220 to come across the border,

00:21:22.520 then you have moral

00:21:23.660 responsibility

00:21:24.320 for those rapes 0.99

00:21:25.180 on your hands. 0.99

00:21:25.980 So I'm going

00:21:26.860 preen on MSNBC.

00:21:28.540 I'm glad at least

00:21:29.220 MSNBC got religion. 0.72

00:21:31.060 Donald Trump

00:21:31.560 seems to have trolled them

00:21:32.420 into reading the Bible

00:21:33.240 on air the other day,

00:21:34.180 so that's good. 0.86

00:21:34.980 But it's absolutely disgusting. 0.92

00:21:36.580 And these guys go on 0.94

00:21:37.880 and they preen

00:21:38.600 and they throw

00:21:39.180 moral accusations

00:21:40.140 when they are the ones

00:21:41.420 who are morally culpable.

00:21:42.640 And we're trying to be nice

00:21:43.660 and civilized about it,

00:21:44.680 but when you hurl 0.99

00:21:45.440 that kind of trash 1.00

00:21:46.460 at your ostensibly 1.00

00:21:48.060 fellow Republicans,

00:21:49.180 you can't let that stand.

00:21:50.880 Absolutely awful.

00:21:51.620 He's not making

00:21:52.140 any moral argument.

00:21:53.320 He's just sitting there

00:21:54.040 and saying,

00:21:54.440 you're bad, 1.00

00:21:54.980 you're evil, 1.00

00:21:55.500 you're Hitler. 1.00

00:21:56.540 I got two words for you,

00:21:57.600 Evan Siegfried,

00:21:58.820 and they are not happy birthday.

00:22:00.740 From Susan Collins,

00:22:01.980 the fake Republican senator,

00:22:04.260 she writes,

00:22:05.820 quote,

00:22:06.200 what the administration

00:22:07.100 has decided to do

00:22:08.160 is separate children

00:22:08.980 from their parents

00:22:09.700 to try to send a message

00:22:10.920 that if you cross the border

00:22:12.140 with your children,

00:22:13.220 your children are going

00:22:13.980 to be ripped away from you.

00:22:16.480 No.

00:22:17.220 They're doing it

00:22:17.940 because it's the law.

00:22:19.840 They're doing it

00:22:20.720 because it's the law

00:22:22.180 and they are supposed

00:22:22.860 to enforce the law

00:22:24.400 because we are a nation

00:22:25.640 of laws,

00:22:26.600 not a nation of men.

00:22:28.260 These Democrats

00:22:29.740 and these anti-Trump Republicans

00:22:31.060 attack Trump

00:22:32.000 for being authoritarian.

00:22:33.660 They are the ones

00:22:34.260 advocating authoritarianism.

00:22:36.000 He is enforcing the law finally.

00:22:37.960 He's not trying

00:22:38.580 to be capricious

00:22:39.720 and selectively prosecute

00:22:41.120 certain people

00:22:41.560 and not others.

00:22:42.500 He's the one saying 0.88

00:22:43.200 we need to follow the law

00:22:44.160 and it's these authoritarians

00:22:45.880 are the ones

00:22:46.500 accusing Donald Trump

00:22:47.580 of being exactly

00:22:48.340 what they really are.

00:22:49.860 Susan Collins goes on.

00:22:51.600 She says,

00:22:52.280 this is traumatizing

00:22:53.340 to the children

00:22:53.820 who are innocent victims.

00:22:54.760 It is contrary

00:22:55.680 to our values

00:22:56.440 in this country.

00:22:57.520 Open borders 0.68

00:22:58.080 is not a value

00:22:58.840 in this country.

00:23:00.040 Incentivizing the rape 0.92

00:23:00.820 of women and girls

00:23:01.460 is not a value

00:23:02.140 in this country. 0.99

00:23:02.820 Just pathetic sophistry. 0.99

00:23:04.460 And this brings us 0.99

00:23:05.300 to Mrs. Laura Bush.

00:23:06.820 Mrs. Laura Bush

00:23:07.500 wrote an op-ed

00:23:08.460 in the Washington Post

00:23:09.420 where democracy dies

00:23:10.460 in darkness

00:23:10.980 attacking this administration

00:23:13.200 in the most vicious terms.

00:23:15.700 So we'll have to talk about it.

00:23:17.280 Mrs. Bush said, 0.99

00:23:18.880 quote,

00:23:19.240 I live in a border state.

00:23:20.620 I appreciate the need

00:23:21.440 to enforce and protect

00:23:22.400 our international boundaries.

00:23:23.980 But,

00:23:24.680 and I know what you're thinking

00:23:26.420 because I just read that sentence

00:23:27.620 and that sounded fine.

00:23:28.660 And then she said,

00:23:29.420 but,

00:23:30.500 and you know,

00:23:31.400 you know what's going to follow

00:23:32.620 is a complete negation

00:23:34.040 of what she just said

00:23:35.060 because butts negate sentences

00:23:36.700 almost all of the time.

00:23:38.320 Says,

00:23:38.660 okay,

00:23:38.900 yeah,

00:23:39.080 we need to protect the border.

00:23:40.680 Yeah,

00:23:40.840 yeah,

00:23:40.940 yeah.

00:23:41.260 But,

00:23:42.480 this zero tolerance policy

00:23:44.160 is cruel.

00:23:45.140 It's immoral

00:23:45.940 and it breaks my heart.

00:23:49.600 Okay,

00:23:50.160 if it's cruel,

00:23:51.080 then why weren't you agitating

00:23:52.660 to change the law?

00:23:54.780 Why wasn't,

00:23:55.360 when this was happening

00:23:56.000 under the Obama administration,

00:23:57.280 why weren't you

00:23:57.900 arguing to change the law?

00:24:00.580 Barack Obama

00:24:00.980 was actually enforcing this

00:24:02.100 at various times

00:24:02.780 in his administration.

00:24:04.340 I didn't,

00:24:04.720 I don't remember an op-ed

00:24:05.780 from Mrs. Bush

00:24:06.800 or others then.

00:24:08.120 Do you?

00:24:08.480 I don't remember that either.

00:24:09.760 She goes on,

00:24:11.200 our government

00:24:11.720 should not be in the business

00:24:12.600 of warehousing children.

00:24:14.940 Right.

00:24:15.660 Yeah,

00:24:16.040 they shouldn't be coming

00:24:16.780 into the country 0.54

00:24:17.400 and their criminal parents

00:24:18.740 shouldn't be bringing them

00:24:19.500 into the country

00:24:20.140 and opening them up

00:24:21.580 to the horrible dangers

00:24:23.180 that accompany crossing

00:24:24.060 that border

00:24:24.540 with all of the drug cartels

00:24:25.920 who facilitate it

00:24:26.860 and all of the legal ramifications

00:24:28.800 for committing

00:24:29.380 a heinous crime,

00:24:30.880 a truly awful crime

00:24:32.160 which is the first act

00:24:34.320 that one person does

00:24:35.280 when they come into a country

00:24:36.160 is to violate

00:24:37.020 some of its most sacred laws

00:24:38.280 determining who can come in

00:24:39.440 and who can come out.

00:24:40.320 That is a real crime

00:24:41.700 and some Democrats argue

00:24:43.440 they say it's just a misdemeanor

00:24:44.540 and I suppose technically

00:24:45.740 that's true

00:24:46.260 on the first time.

00:24:47.360 The second time

00:24:47.920 it's a felony

00:24:48.440 but regardless

00:24:49.420 the crime itself

00:24:50.480 is so cuts

00:24:51.960 to the heart of a country

00:24:52.880 to determine

00:24:53.660 who gets to be

00:24:54.300 in the country

00:24:54.700 who gets to access

00:24:55.480 its taxpayer funded services

00:24:57.020 who will have to be dealt with

00:24:58.660 by the criminal justice system

00:24:59.820 who ultimately could vote

00:25:01.220 in its elections

00:25:01.860 and shape its politics

00:25:03.580 and shape its government.

00:25:04.720 It so cuts to the heart

00:25:06.220 of the government

00:25:08.260 that it's a really

00:25:08.940 really awful crime.

00:25:10.240 Laura Bush goes on

00:25:11.320 this is really awful

00:25:13.100 she goes

00:25:13.520 these images

00:25:14.440 are eerily reminiscent

00:25:15.520 of the Japanese

00:25:16.460 American internment camps

00:25:17.900 of World War II

00:25:18.680 now considered

00:25:19.660 to have been

00:25:20.140 one of the most shameful

00:25:21.060 episodes in U.S. history.

00:25:22.620 This is where Mrs. Bush 0.96

00:25:24.020 delves into

00:25:24.520 all of my enemies

00:25:25.420 are Hitler 0.80

00:25:25.800 everyone who disagrees

00:25:26.980 with me is Hitler 0.91

00:25:27.600 during Japanese internment

00:25:29.800 the United States

00:25:30.480 rounded up some

00:25:31.160 of its citizens

00:25:31.800 and put them in camps.

00:25:33.440 In this case

00:25:34.020 people are flooding

00:25:35.400 over our border

00:25:36.400 and we're trying

00:25:37.060 to deal with them

00:25:37.880 and we're not even

00:25:38.760 deporting them immediately

00:25:39.720 we're giving them

00:25:40.660 the opportunity

00:25:41.120 to go back

00:25:41.700 but we're trying

00:25:42.580 to deal with them

00:25:43.080 as humanely as possible

00:25:44.080 nobody's asking

00:25:45.160 them to come over

00:25:45.900 in fact we're telling

00:25:46.820 them explicitly

00:25:47.380 please do not

00:25:48.280 but policies

00:25:49.240 such as the policies

00:25:50.540 being advocated

00:25:51.380 by Mrs. Bush

00:25:52.280 and other

00:25:52.740 administration critics

00:25:54.000 here are incentivizing

00:25:55.380 that flow

00:25:55.800 and creating

00:25:56.260 this crisis

00:25:57.300 at the border

00:25:58.020 this crisis

00:25:59.320 that they have

00:25:59.840 created themselves

00:26:01.280 totally awful

00:26:03.060 and to compare

00:26:04.040 enforcing laws

00:26:06.180 that were on the books

00:26:06.920 during your husband's

00:26:07.720 administration

00:26:08.280 during the Obama

00:26:09.400 administration

00:26:10.060 to compare

00:26:11.340 enforcing the law

00:26:12.400 to Japanese internment 0.57

00:26:13.740 is really disgusting 0.92

00:26:14.980 really awful

00:26:15.640 I can't believe

00:26:16.220 that was allowed

00:26:17.300 to go through

00:26:17.780 finally

00:26:18.960 she says

00:26:19.920 Americans pride

00:26:20.860 ourselves on being

00:26:21.480 a moral nation

00:26:22.280 on being a nation

00:26:23.160 that sends humanitarian

00:26:24.000 relief to places

00:26:24.720 devastated by disasters

00:26:25.860 and famine and war

00:26:26.720 we pride ourselves

00:26:27.700 on believing that

00:26:28.240 people should be seen

00:26:28.900 for the content

00:26:29.420 of their character

00:26:30.100 not the color

00:26:30.920 of their skin

00:26:31.580 I'm going to hold off

00:26:33.640 right here

00:26:34.080 is she now calling

00:26:36.060 them racist

00:26:36.720 is this now

00:26:37.800 it's racist now

00:26:38.580 to enforce the law

00:26:39.560 because that's what

00:26:40.260 she's saying

00:26:40.760 she said

00:26:41.360 Tom Arnold called

00:26:42.340 Republicans racist

00:26:43.100 on my show 0.66

00:26:43.680 I can expect that

00:26:44.760 from someone

00:26:45.500 who's you know

00:26:46.780 sort of a more

00:26:48.020 left wing activist

00:26:49.560 someone who's doing

00:26:50.320 a show

00:26:50.760 to try to get down

00:26:51.860 Donald Trump

00:26:52.360 but this is the

00:26:53.040 former first lady

00:26:53.760 of the United States

00:26:54.380 ostensibly a Republican

00:26:55.460 saying if you disagree

00:26:56.540 with me you're a racist 0.99

00:26:57.520 really vicious 1.00

00:26:58.660 she then says

00:26:59.780 we pride ourselves

00:27:00.580 on acceptance

00:27:01.240 I don't know

00:27:02.060 what that means

00:27:03.200 like what do we

00:27:04.000 do we accept

00:27:04.720 evil

00:27:05.640 do we accept

00:27:06.960 do you accept

00:27:08.800 crime

00:27:09.320 do you accept

00:27:10.000 is that

00:27:10.600 that's what you accept

00:27:11.480 do you accept

00:27:11.920 all that awful

00:27:12.960 sexual crime

00:27:13.940 that occurs

00:27:14.380 at the border

00:27:14.900 because of those

00:27:15.600 incentives

00:27:15.980 no that's an

00:27:17.200 empty statement

00:27:17.880 right

00:27:18.140 if we are truly

00:27:19.380 that country

00:27:19.940 then it is our

00:27:20.460 obligation to reunite

00:27:21.500 these detained

00:27:21.980 children with their

00:27:22.600 parents

00:27:23.020 and stop separating

00:27:24.260 parents and children

00:27:24.920 in the first place

00:27:25.640 read between the lines

00:27:26.740 it means stop

00:27:27.440 enforcing

00:27:27.960 border protections

00:27:29.360 and just let

00:27:30.060 illegal aliens

00:27:30.800 flood our country

00:27:31.420 that's what it's

00:27:31.920 really saying

00:27:32.340 people on all sides

00:27:33.360 agree that our

00:27:33.820 immigration system

00:27:34.540 isn't working

00:27:35.100 I don't agree

00:27:36.060 with that

00:27:36.460 I think it is

00:27:37.660 work I think

00:27:38.120 if we enforce

00:27:38.620 the law

00:27:38.980 then the immigration

00:27:39.580 system is working

00:27:40.320 we know actually

00:27:41.340 we know

00:27:42.080 illegal immigration

00:27:43.840 dropped dramatically

00:27:44.940 at the start

00:27:45.360 of the Trump

00:27:45.720 administration

00:27:46.280 why?

00:27:47.060 because people

00:27:47.440 thought they

00:27:47.760 weren't going

00:27:48.080 to be allowed

00:27:48.420 to get in

00:27:48.940 then when they

00:27:50.160 saw that this

00:27:51.100 system is pretty

00:27:51.980 hard to change

00:27:52.620 the numbers

00:27:53.420 ticked right back

00:27:54.180 up and they

00:27:54.480 started flooding

00:27:55.020 over again

00:27:55.600 and they started

00:27:56.220 using children

00:27:56.860 as human shields

00:27:57.580 to get into

00:27:58.020 the United States

00:27:58.720 but we know

00:28:00.400 we know that this

00:28:00.660 is voluntary

00:28:01.380 immigration

00:28:02.580 we know this

00:28:03.800 is mostly

00:28:04.300 economic

00:28:05.120 immigration

00:28:05.660 because if it

00:28:06.880 were truly

00:28:07.440 all cases

00:28:08.100 of asylum

00:28:08.620 then those

00:28:09.160 numbers

00:28:09.400 wouldn't have

00:28:09.860 dropped

00:28:10.240 right

00:28:10.620 when they

00:28:11.360 thought that

00:28:13.140 they could

00:28:13.580 would not be

00:28:14.500 allowed in

00:28:15.000 and would be

00:28:15.320 sent back

00:28:15.740 those numbers

00:28:16.320 dropped

00:28:16.640 that makes

00:28:17.620 it clear

00:28:18.080 that it's

00:28:18.880 largely voluntary

00:28:19.840 but not

00:28:20.800 for Mrs. Bush's

00:28:22.480 sadly demagogic

00:28:23.960 article

00:28:24.580 she says

00:28:26.140 people on all

00:28:26.780 sides agree

00:28:27.180 it isn't working

00:28:27.740 but the injustice

00:28:28.560 of zero tolerance

00:28:29.360 is not the answer

00:28:30.060 in 2018

00:28:30.860 can we not

00:28:31.400 find a nation

00:28:32.280 can we not

00:28:33.740 as a nation

00:28:34.100 find a kinder

00:28:34.960 more compassionate

00:28:35.840 more moral

00:28:36.740 answer to the

00:28:37.460 crisis

00:28:37.800 and here she

00:28:38.580 gives away

00:28:39.020 the whole story

00:28:39.820 listen to those

00:28:40.680 words

00:28:40.900 kinder

00:28:41.620 more compassionate

00:28:42.720 this is a

00:28:43.940 really terrible

00:28:44.800 op-ed

00:28:45.200 really awful

00:28:46.040 to her fellow

00:28:47.120 republicans

00:28:47.660 and fellow

00:28:48.140 americans

00:28:48.640 but because

00:28:49.880 she's basically

00:28:50.400 calling people

00:28:51.000 who support

00:28:51.960 enforcing

00:28:52.480 immigration

00:28:52.900 law

00:28:53.100 and having

00:28:53.360 a border

00:28:53.680 racist

00:28:54.180 and comparing

00:28:54.820 them to

00:28:55.780 the people

00:28:57.220 behind

00:28:57.540 Japanese

00:28:57.940 internment

00:28:58.540 but this

00:28:59.700 is something

00:29:00.280 the Bushes

00:29:00.720 have always

00:29:01.120 done

00:29:01.400 when George

00:29:02.180 H.W.

00:29:02.880 Bush ran

00:29:03.260 for president

00:29:03.720 in 1988

00:29:04.340 he said

00:29:05.060 we needed

00:29:05.360 to become

00:29:05.660 a kinder

00:29:06.200 gentler nation

00:29:06.980 and Mrs.

00:29:07.860 Reagan

00:29:08.140 to that

00:29:08.660 answered

00:29:09.140 kinder

00:29:09.980 and gentler

00:29:10.680 than whom

00:29:11.720 what do you

00:29:12.600 mean kinder

00:29:13.120 and gentler

00:29:13.540 the Reagan

00:29:15.040 administration

00:29:15.640 lasted for

00:29:16.240 eight years

00:29:16.740 George Bush

00:29:17.440 was vice

00:29:17.820 president there

00:29:18.340 and then he

00:29:18.640 says we

00:29:19.080 need to be

00:29:19.340 kinder

00:29:19.720 and gentler

00:29:20.100 he's calling

00:29:20.580 conservatives

00:29:21.380 cruel

00:29:21.800 when George

00:29:22.560 Bush Jr.

00:29:23.160 George W.

00:29:23.900 Bush ran

00:29:24.220 for president

00:29:24.660 in 2000

00:29:25.200 he promised

00:29:26.000 a compassionate

00:29:27.360 conservatism

00:29:28.280 as though

00:29:28.900 conservative

00:29:29.720 thought is cruel

00:29:30.580 in the first

00:29:31.200 place

00:29:31.480 but he is

00:29:32.120 going to

00:29:32.300 make it

00:29:32.560 compassionate

00:29:33.040 the Bushes

00:29:34.340 have never

00:29:35.000 been

00:29:35.320 conservatives

00:29:36.060 they came

00:29:36.420 from the

00:29:36.680 establishment

00:29:37.100 wing of

00:29:37.500 the party

00:29:37.860 they were

00:29:38.400 brought into

00:29:38.820 the Reagan

00:29:39.180 ticket

00:29:39.500 to tie up

00:29:41.320 the fissures

00:29:41.720 in the

00:29:41.960 Republican

00:29:42.260 party

00:29:42.580 between

00:29:42.840 the

00:29:42.980 conservatives

00:29:43.380 and the

00:29:44.300 establishment

00:29:44.800 this creates

00:29:46.280 awful incentives

00:29:47.040 so just a

00:29:47.940 quick little

00:29:48.360 rundown

00:29:48.800 80%

00:29:49.900 80%

00:29:50.720 of women

00:29:51.100 and girls

00:29:51.420 60%

00:29:51.760 to 80%

00:29:52.220 according to

00:29:52.620 Amnesty

00:29:52.940 International

00:29:53.400 Infusion 0.96

00:29:54.240 raped 1.00

00:29:54.920 and sexually 1.00

00:29:55.480 assaulted

00:29:55.880 crossing

00:29:56.320 into the

00:29:56.700 border

00:29:56.920 also

00:29:57.580 an estimated

00:29:58.160 78%

00:29:59.080 of the

00:29:59.380 guides

00:29:59.780 who are

00:30:00.360 bringing

00:30:00.680 people

00:30:01.000 across

00:30:01.320 that

00:30:01.500 border

00:30:01.780 are under

00:30:02.480 the age

00:30:02.840 of 18

00:30:03.340 that's a little

00:30:04.060 weird

00:30:04.340 when we talk

00:30:04.800 about these

00:30:05.120 detained

00:30:05.460 children

00:30:05.900 a lot

00:30:06.420 of them

00:30:06.620 come over

00:30:07.000 unaccompanied

00:30:07.600 a lot

00:30:07.860 of them

00:30:08.080 are with

00:30:08.320 adults

00:30:08.580 who are

00:30:08.780 not their

00:30:09.220 parents

00:30:09.620 who are

00:30:10.300 who are

00:30:11.100 bad guys

00:30:11.940 who are

00:30:12.220 trying to

00:30:12.640 bring them

00:30:13.140 over as

00:30:13.460 human shields

00:30:14.020 they're under

00:30:14.800 18

00:30:15.180 the drug

00:30:15.640 cartels

00:30:16.140 started to

00:30:16.860 use

00:30:17.260 young

00:30:17.920 children

00:30:18.600 children

00:30:18.900 under the

00:30:19.260 age of

00:30:19.520 18

00:30:19.900 as the

00:30:21.340 guides

00:30:21.660 because

00:30:21.960 they knew

00:30:22.320 that the

00:30:22.560 United States

00:30:23.060 wouldn't

00:30:23.340 prosecute

00:30:23.840 them

00:30:23.980 so what

00:30:24.260 do we

00:30:24.440 do

00:30:24.600 with them

00:30:24.920 actually

00:30:25.600 during the

00:30:26.060 Obama

00:30:26.460 administration

00:30:27.200 Barack Obama

00:30:28.780 detained a number

00:30:29.560 of them

00:30:29.780 because they were

00:30:30.200 such a key

00:30:30.840 to the human

00:30:31.520 trafficking problem

00:30:32.300 at the border

00:30:32.760 he detained

00:30:33.420 536 of them

00:30:34.700 in less

00:30:35.240 than a year

00:30:36.120 of course

00:30:37.040 that was never

00:30:37.560 reported on

00:30:38.240 if only

00:30:39.400 Mrs. Bush

00:30:39.940 had attacked

00:30:40.380 Barack Obama

00:30:41.040 in this way

00:30:41.620 for anything

00:30:42.260 not just this

00:30:42.760 policy

00:30:43.160 but for all

00:30:43.840 of the

00:30:44.060 destruction

00:30:44.480 that his

00:30:44.860 presidency

00:30:45.240 wrought on

00:30:45.780 our country

00:30:46.240 but no

00:30:46.920 during that

00:30:47.460 administration

00:30:48.040 then it was

00:30:48.820 better for

00:30:49.840 former presidents

00:30:50.580 and their

00:30:50.920 families

00:30:51.340 to stay

00:30:51.720 quiet

00:30:52.060 that was

00:30:53.100 the dignified

00:30:53.700 thing to do

00:30:54.240 and I sort

00:30:55.260 of respect

00:30:55.660 that actually

00:30:56.300 but now

00:30:57.260 that it's

00:30:57.500 a Republican

00:30:57.920 administration

00:30:58.440 it's good

00:30:58.800 to start 0.98

00:30:59.020 attacking them

00:30:59.720 for enforcing

00:31:01.080 the law

00:31:01.560 for trying

00:31:02.760 to advance

00:31:03.240 some conservative

00:31:03.880 public policy

00:31:05.180 absolutely awful

00:31:06.460 the reason

00:31:07.900 that this is

00:31:08.320 happening

00:31:08.680 you remember

00:31:09.960 about a month

00:31:10.780 or so ago

00:31:11.360 there were

00:31:12.060 those images

00:31:12.480 of kids

00:31:12.880 being detained

00:31:13.520 by immigration

00:31:14.260 and they're

00:31:15.120 at the border

00:31:15.620 and all the

00:31:17.100 Obama administration

00:31:17.900 officials said

00:31:18.440 this is awful

00:31:18.960 this is the end

00:31:19.460 of the world

00:31:19.780 this is terrible

00:31:20.520 then they

00:31:21.500 found out

00:31:21.940 that those

00:31:22.340 photos were

00:31:22.840 taken

00:31:23.080 during the

00:31:23.540 Obama administration

00:31:24.340 all of a sudden 0.67

00:31:25.320 they shut up

00:31:25.920 about it

00:31:26.200 they wouldn't

00:31:26.540 talk about it

00:31:27.060 anymore

00:31:27.320 because it's

00:31:27.660 just trying

00:31:28.260 to take

00:31:28.540 cheap points

00:31:29.440 at Donald

00:31:30.120 Trump

00:31:30.440 and the reason

00:31:31.220 they focus

00:31:31.660 on this

00:31:32.160 the reason

00:31:32.680 they have

00:31:32.880 to create

00:31:33.380 this fake

00:31:34.020 crisis

00:31:34.660 is because

00:31:36.280 the Trump

00:31:37.760 administration

00:31:38.140 is doing

00:31:38.980 too well

00:31:39.540 so the economy

00:31:40.320 is doing

00:31:40.580 very well

00:31:41.020 foreign affairs

00:31:41.620 are going

00:31:42.140 great

00:31:42.640 going gangbusters

00:31:43.740 even the IMF

00:31:45.060 is admitting

00:31:45.440 that we're

00:31:45.700 helping the

00:31:46.140 global economy

00:31:46.880 rise so much

00:31:48.660 they have

00:31:50.640 to create

00:31:50.960 this crisis

00:31:51.500 is it awful

00:31:52.820 what's happening

00:31:53.360 is it awful

00:31:53.800 to see a child

00:31:54.460 separated from

00:31:55.140 his parent

00:31:55.600 in the cases

00:31:56.400 where it actually

00:31:57.000 is a parent

00:31:57.460 and actually

00:31:57.940 is a child

00:31:58.420 yes

00:31:58.980 that's horrible

00:31:59.880 that's terrible

00:32:00.780 and that has

00:32:01.400 all been created

00:32:02.440 by the sick 0.99

00:32:03.420 and perverse

00:32:03.900 incentives

00:32:04.360 in laws

00:32:05.440 passed

00:32:05.840 in part

00:32:06.220 by Democrats

00:32:06.820 judicial decisions

00:32:08.220 that have come

00:32:08.640 down from

00:32:09.020 left wing judges

00:32:09.820 on the 9th

00:32:10.400 circuit

00:32:10.680 and by those

00:32:11.880 squishes

00:32:12.480 and those

00:32:13.300 left wingers

00:32:13.980 who insist

00:32:14.660 that we not

00:32:15.220 enforce the law

00:32:15.920 creating incentives

00:32:16.840 that have children

00:32:17.980 taken away

00:32:18.460 from their parents

00:32:19.120 conservatives

00:32:19.880 and Republicans

00:32:20.520 should not give

00:32:21.080 one single inch

00:32:22.260 on this

00:32:22.700 it's just awful

00:32:23.800 and the Republicans

00:32:24.680 who come out

00:32:25.440 and use this

00:32:26.300 to take cheap shots

00:32:27.140 against the administration

00:32:27.820 should be ashamed

00:32:28.840 of themselves

00:32:29.440 and they should have

00:32:30.280 their GOP card

00:32:31.200 ripped away from them

00:32:32.880 separated

00:32:33.520 at the border

00:32:34.260 of politics

00:32:35.540 okay

00:32:36.120 we've got to get

00:32:36.800 to George Weigel

00:32:37.500 we're running a little

00:32:38.020 late right now

00:32:38.620 so we've got to get

00:32:39.220 to him

00:32:39.560 if you're on Facebook

00:32:41.220 and YouTube

00:32:41.560 I'm sorry

00:32:42.320 what can I do

00:32:43.660 you've got to go

00:32:44.060 to dailywire.com

00:32:45.000 you'll get me

00:32:45.480 you'll get the

00:32:45.740 Andrew Klavan show

00:32:46.260 you'll get the

00:32:46.500 Ben Shapiro show

00:32:47.260 it's 10 bucks a month

00:32:48.360 $100 for an annual

00:32:49.360 membership

00:32:49.840 none of those perks

00:32:51.540 matter at all

00:32:52.060 because you need

00:32:52.720 the leftist tears

00:32:54.020 tumbler

00:32:55.220 there it is

00:32:55.940 oh is that

00:32:59.400 World Cup

00:33:00.760 viewership ratings

00:33:01.740 are down over 50%

00:33:02.800 this year in the

00:33:03.240 United States

00:33:03.700 oh that's good

00:33:07.400 that tastes real

00:33:08.180 real good

00:33:08.560 go to dailywire.com

00:33:09.740 we'll be right back

00:33:10.340 with the theologian

00:33:10.960 George Weigel

00:33:11.520 all right

00:33:22.540 George Weigel

00:33:23.640 distinguished senior

00:33:24.840 fellow at the

00:33:25.720 Ethics and Public

00:33:26.320 Policy Institute

00:33:27.060 he is a leading

00:33:28.200 Catholic theologian

00:33:29.280 in the United States

00:33:30.120 and an all around

00:33:31.100 great public intellectual

00:33:32.120 he holds the

00:33:33.440 Ethics and Public

00:33:34.100 Policy Center's

00:33:35.020 William E. Simon

00:33:35.840 Chair in Catholic

00:33:36.800 Studies

00:33:37.160 he has a new

00:33:37.780 book out

00:33:38.300 The Fragility of

00:33:41.580 Order

00:33:41.880 Catholic Reflections

00:33:43.080 on Turbulent Times

00:33:44.420 I spoke to George

00:33:46.000 at the end of last

00:33:46.900 week he is always

00:33:47.640 very interesting to

00:33:48.480 talk to

00:33:48.800 here's the interview

00:33:49.600 Mr. Weigel

00:33:51.260 thank you so much

00:33:51.840 for being here

00:33:52.440 nice to be with

00:33:54.000 you Michael

00:33:54.440 I really really

00:33:55.880 enjoyed your book

00:33:56.560 the book is

00:33:57.040 The Fragility of

00:33:58.200 Order

00:33:58.620 Catholic Reflections

00:34:00.000 on Turbulent Times

00:34:01.360 I'd like to begin

00:34:03.000 a little before that

00:34:03.900 though in 2016

00:34:04.900 because I loved

00:34:06.720 a piece you wrote

00:34:07.440 in First Things

00:34:08.280 where you used

00:34:10.180 a quotation to

00:34:10.980 describe your

00:34:11.500 feeling of that

00:34:12.060 election

00:34:12.380 you said

00:34:13.300 do the Germans 0.99

00:34:14.260 have a word

00:34:14.920 for euphoric

00:34:16.080 dread

00:34:16.680 and I think

00:34:18.060 that about

00:34:18.460 sums it up

00:34:19.080 now you know

00:34:20.660 almost two years

00:34:21.800 in

00:34:22.100 have your feelings

00:34:23.520 changed on this

00:34:24.380 are you more

00:34:24.980 comfortable with

00:34:25.940 the presidency

00:34:26.540 or is it still

00:34:28.080 a bizarro world

00:34:29.200 that we're all

00:34:29.660 living in

00:34:30.120 I'm very grateful

00:34:32.440 for a number

00:34:33.380 of things

00:34:33.960 that the

00:34:34.460 president

00:34:34.800 administration

00:34:35.300 has done

00:34:36.200 particularly

00:34:37.100 in terms

00:34:37.860 of the

00:34:38.220 federal

00:34:38.600 judiciary

00:34:39.420 employment

00:34:42.360 situation

00:34:43.100 seems to be

00:34:43.920 considerably

00:34:44.400 improved

00:34:45.120 the pressure

00:34:45.600 is off

00:34:46.120 on religious

00:34:46.800 freedom

00:34:47.320 at least

00:34:48.760 as that

00:34:49.240 pressure

00:34:49.540 was coming

00:34:50.140 from

00:34:50.600 the executive

00:34:52.460 branch

00:34:52.960 in the

00:34:53.280 Obama

00:34:53.620 administration

00:34:54.360 but the

00:34:55.860 recent

00:34:56.380 business

00:34:57.700 in Singapore

00:34:58.600 where

00:35:00.000 the president

00:35:00.880 praised

00:35:02.440 one of the

00:35:03.680 three worst

00:35:04.440 dictators

00:35:05.140 in the

00:35:05.780 world

00:35:06.240 as a

00:35:07.420 very talented

00:35:08.320 guy

00:35:09.000 with a good

00:35:09.720 sense of

00:35:10.340 humor

00:35:10.720 and all

00:35:11.940 of this

00:35:12.540 and then

00:35:13.020 a few

00:35:13.380 hours ago

00:35:14.380 said

00:35:15.660 presumably

00:35:16.600 jocularly

00:35:17.880 well I wish

00:35:19.500 people would

00:35:20.180 sit up and pay

00:35:21.120 attention to me

00:35:22.240 like they do

00:35:23.120 to Kim Jong-un

00:35:24.640 look

00:35:25.960 12 hours

00:35:27.080 before I

00:35:27.780 had had

00:35:28.120 dinner

00:35:28.360 with six

00:35:28.960 North Korean

00:35:29.640 defectors

00:35:30.460 who are

00:35:31.420 working on

00:35:32.140 on human

00:35:32.700 rights issues

00:35:33.460 in North

00:35:33.920 Korea 0.61

00:35:34.280 today

00:35:34.720 you don't

00:35:35.740 joke about

00:35:36.320 this stuff

00:35:36.940 this is

00:35:37.680 not a

00:35:38.840 joking

00:35:39.160 matter

00:35:39.640 this is

00:35:40.520 a terrible

00:35:41.180 regime

00:35:41.920 and if we

00:35:43.660 don't understand

00:35:44.360 that we're

00:35:45.180 not going to

00:35:45.760 get a

00:35:46.040 particularly

00:35:46.600 satisfactory

00:35:47.760 deal

00:35:49.000 if any

00:35:49.700 deal

00:35:50.180 is possible

00:35:51.320 with these

00:35:51.920 guys

00:35:52.300 well this

00:35:52.920 gets to

00:35:53.340 a point

00:35:53.960 in your

00:35:54.280 book

00:35:54.560 which I

00:35:55.200 really loved

00:35:55.920 in the

00:35:56.640 essay

00:35:57.380 the importance

00:35:58.280 of reality

00:35:59.000 contact

00:35:59.660 because I

00:36:00.480 think the

00:36:00.780 way that

00:36:01.500 Donald Trump

00:36:02.400 himself has

00:36:03.060 explained his

00:36:04.280 comments and

00:36:05.040 compliments to

00:36:05.840 Kim Jong-un

00:36:06.720 is he's saying

00:36:07.320 oh you know

00:36:08.020 I'm just saying

00:36:08.620 words and they

00:36:09.200 don't mean

00:36:09.560 anything and I'm

00:36:10.140 trying to butter

00:36:10.680 him up for a

00:36:11.680 deal and the

00:36:12.840 implication here is

00:36:14.040 that oh it

00:36:14.640 doesn't matter

00:36:15.120 what I say

00:36:15.840 I'm just using

00:36:16.740 words instrumentally

00:36:17.840 you write in

00:36:19.220 that essay

00:36:19.880 public policy

00:36:21.380 that fosters

00:36:22.080 individual human

00:36:23.160 flourishing and

00:36:23.900 the common good

00:36:24.520 must take

00:36:25.400 account of

00:36:25.880 reality and

00:36:26.900 realities

00:36:27.500 when a

00:36:28.300 culture loses

00:36:28.860 confidence in

00:36:29.500 its capacity to

00:36:30.340 say with

00:36:30.660 conviction this

00:36:31.560 is the way

00:36:31.960 things are

00:36:32.660 its capacity to

00:36:33.820 devise ways and

00:36:34.600 means of addressing

00:36:35.260 the way things

00:36:35.840 ought to be is

00:36:37.000 severely eroded

00:36:38.360 and you know I

00:36:39.260 had the actor Tom

00:36:40.000 Arnold on my show

00:36:40.740 the other day he

00:36:41.680 said with a

00:36:42.380 straight face there

00:36:43.380 is no such thing

00:36:44.420 as a single

00:36:45.200 objective reality I

00:36:46.480 go to college

00:36:47.000 campuses students

00:36:48.140 tell me all the

00:36:48.800 time there's no

00:36:49.580 objective truth there

00:36:51.080 is your truth and

00:36:52.220 my truth and

00:36:53.260 George's truth and

00:36:54.520 his truth how

00:36:55.780 did we get to

00:36:56.660 this point this

00:36:57.520 disrespect of

00:36:58.360 reality and how

00:36:59.340 do we get out

00:36:59.820 of it well we

00:37:01.920 could spend the

00:37:02.840 rest of our time

00:37:03.700 together tracing

00:37:04.620 this back to

00:37:05.500 David Hume and

00:37:06.480 Immanuel Kant but

00:37:08.820 let's let's fast

00:37:10.140 forward here and

00:37:11.580 and take up your

00:37:12.640 your college student

00:37:14.440 who says okay

00:37:15.420 Michael there's

00:37:16.380 there's no such

00:37:17.180 thing as the truth

00:37:18.220 there's only your

00:37:19.500 truth and my

00:37:20.340 truth the next

00:37:21.660 thing to say to

00:37:22.440 that person is

00:37:23.300 okay what

00:37:24.140 happens when

00:37:25.440 your truth and

00:37:26.660 my truth collide

00:37:28.160 and neither one of

00:37:29.960 us recognizes

00:37:31.020 something called

00:37:32.060 the truth by

00:37:33.580 which we can

00:37:34.180 settle the

00:37:34.740 argument what

00:37:36.220 happens is you

00:37:37.400 impose your power

00:37:38.460 on me or I

00:37:40.140 impose my power

00:37:41.220 on you this is

00:37:42.700 what Cardinal

00:37:43.500 Ratzinger on

00:37:44.600 April 18th 2005

00:37:46.460 called the

00:37:47.280 dictatorship of

00:37:48.280 relativism it's

00:37:49.860 the end of

00:37:50.640 democracy it's

00:37:52.200 a radical

00:37:52.780 constraint on

00:37:53.800 freedom and

00:37:55.100 it's a terrible

00:37:56.840 problem throughout

00:37:58.420 the western world

00:37:59.340 today the

00:37:59.920 inability to say

00:38:01.880 that anything is

00:38:03.200 true except my

00:38:05.160 willfulness the

00:38:06.780 reduction of

00:38:07.580 freedom to sheer

00:38:08.640 will is the

00:38:10.260 death of freedom

00:38:11.060 of course and

00:38:13.180 there's it creates

00:38:14.620 chaos and there

00:38:15.880 have been a lot of

00:38:16.580 calls for order

00:38:18.040 you know the

00:38:18.940 Jordan Peterson

00:38:19.940 the Canadian

00:38:20.500 psychologist sold

00:38:21.880 about a gazillion

00:38:22.760 books on the

00:38:24.280 topic of creating

00:38:25.800 order out of

00:38:26.460 chaos it does

00:38:27.580 seem like a

00:38:28.920 willfully chaotic

00:38:30.620 time and I

00:38:32.380 wonder if there's

00:38:33.240 any way back

00:38:34.220 you know the

00:38:34.960 it's it's been so

00:38:37.560 long if we can

00:38:38.200 trace this back to

00:38:39.500 David Hume or

00:38:40.560 perhaps even

00:38:41.200 centuries further

00:38:42.040 back the the

00:38:43.160 beginnings of this

00:38:44.060 how do we return

00:38:45.620 to that political

00:38:46.240 order or is it

00:38:47.300 just all out

00:38:48.620 out of Pandora's

00:38:49.800 box and you

00:38:51.360 know the age of

00:38:52.020 chivalry and

00:38:52.560 glory of Europe

00:38:53.320 are all dead

00:38:54.160 well the age of

00:38:56.560 chivalry certainly

00:38:57.880 seems to have

00:38:58.980 died but perhaps

00:39:01.260 we could recover

00:39:02.500 something called

00:39:03.680 common sense

00:39:05.000 good manners

00:39:06.380 some grasp on

00:39:08.520 the truth in the

00:39:11.300 essay in the book

00:39:12.240 called a new

00:39:13.040 great awakening

00:39:13.900 I sketch out

00:39:16.140 a coalition if

00:39:18.640 you will of

00:39:20.220 people of

00:39:21.620 biblical faith

00:39:22.560 and and people

00:39:24.400 who have not

00:39:24.960 been given the

00:39:25.600 gift of faith but

00:39:26.480 who nonetheless

00:39:27.100 recognize that

00:39:29.020 there are truths

00:39:30.120 built into the

00:39:31.040 world and into

00:39:31.780 us and that

00:39:33.040 living according

00:39:33.760 to those truths

00:39:34.880 makes for both

00:39:35.940 personal happiness

00:39:37.480 and and social

00:39:39.300 cohesion and

00:39:40.720 true freedom

00:39:41.460 that was the

00:39:42.960 coalition that

00:39:44.000 made the

00:39:45.120 revolution of

00:39:45.960 1989 possible

00:39:48.040 in Central and

00:39:49.300 Eastern Europe

00:39:49.880 it was built

00:39:50.580 during the 1980s

00:39:52.020 by both believers

00:39:53.040 and unbelievers

00:39:53.980 it was inspired

00:39:55.720 in large part

00:39:57.140 by John Paul

00:39:57.920 II who had a

00:39:59.100 talent for

00:39:59.780 bringing together

00:40:00.680 people of very

00:40:02.060 different backgrounds

00:40:03.900 and that's not

00:40:05.560 that long ago

00:40:06.460 it's not that

00:40:08.280 long ago but

00:40:09.040 unfortunately I'm

00:40:10.360 afraid we are

00:40:11.240 going to have

00:40:12.080 to experience

00:40:13.860 more chaos

00:40:17.380 more repression

00:40:19.500 in the name of

00:40:20.340 tolerance before

00:40:22.380 before people wake

00:40:24.420 up to the fact

00:40:26.080 that there's a

00:40:26.700 serious problem

00:40:27.540 here well I

00:40:28.580 loved the essay

00:40:29.420 and a new great

00:40:30.280 awakening and it

00:40:31.260 struck me because

00:40:32.220 our pal Andrew

00:40:33.060 Clavin has been

00:40:34.320 saying that we're

00:40:35.160 on the verge of a

00:40:35.900 new great awakening

00:40:36.580 for a while now

00:40:37.540 as well and one

00:40:38.500 wonders always what

00:40:39.400 that would look like

00:40:40.180 it occurred to me

00:40:41.120 that the two

00:40:42.060 founders or putative

00:40:43.660 founders of the

00:40:44.400 American conservative

00:40:45.160 movement Russell Kirk

00:40:46.760 and William F. Buckley

00:40:48.000 Jr. both share a

00:40:49.820 certain affinity as

00:40:50.980 do you and I for

00:40:53.000 smells and bells and

00:40:54.420 Roman things the in 0.57

00:40:56.540 this ostensibly

00:40:57.200 Protestant country we've 0.97

00:40:58.640 got the founders of

00:40:59.540 American conservatism are

00:41:01.060 these two Catholics

00:41:02.020 why does the American 0.83

00:41:03.620 conservative movement

00:41:04.480 have this Catholic

00:41:05.700 flavor to it and

00:41:07.140 does that play any

00:41:08.160 role in our new

00:41:09.020 great awakening

00:41:09.580 well I think

00:41:11.280 Catholic social

00:41:12.040 doctrine ought to

00:41:12.980 play a role in

00:41:14.480 this because

00:41:15.300 Catholic social

00:41:16.160 doctrine with its

00:41:17.180 vision of the free

00:41:18.080 and virtuous society

00:41:19.400 another issue

00:41:21.180 addressed in this

00:41:22.260 book is really

00:41:24.180 based on the

00:41:25.500 natural moral law

00:41:26.740 you don't have to

00:41:28.600 believe in the

00:41:29.320 immaculate conception

00:41:30.360 of the blessed

00:41:31.100 virgin Mary to 0.79

00:41:32.780 engage Catholic social

00:41:34.120 doctrine you just

00:41:34.900 have to be willing

00:41:35.580 to work through an

00:41:36.520 argument seriously

00:41:37.760 this was the genius

00:41:39.380 of Leo the 13th in

00:41:40.840 the late 19th century

00:41:42.060 understanding that

00:41:43.760 the modern world

00:41:44.640 needed a kind of

00:41:45.540 grammar for

00:41:46.820 ordering the

00:41:47.600 conversation about

00:41:48.660 the human future

00:41:49.600 and Leo's answer

00:41:51.780 to that was

00:41:52.860 okay let's let's

00:41:54.440 find the moral

00:41:55.560 truths inscribed in

00:41:57.100 the world and in

00:41:57.920 us truths that we

00:41:59.700 can know by reason

00:42:00.660 that creates a kind

00:42:02.020 grammatical system

00:42:03.960 by which we can

00:42:05.700 actually talk to

00:42:06.620 each other the

00:42:07.240 recovery of that

00:42:08.380 throughout the

00:42:09.400 western world is

00:42:10.860 is really essential

00:42:11.980 in the early 21st

00:42:13.500 century but when

00:42:14.680 we're speaking of

00:42:15.360 chaos and order

00:42:16.340 the Catholic church

00:42:18.360 as it stands seems

00:42:19.340 to have gone from a

00:42:20.100 period of wonderful

00:42:21.180 order of Pope John

00:42:23.460 Paul the Great and

00:42:24.420 Pope Benedict to a

00:42:25.980 confusing period right

00:42:27.200 now and I get all of

00:42:28.360 these questions in the

00:42:29.160 mailbag from Catholics

00:42:30.740 and non-Catholics 0.69

00:42:31.860 asking me about the

00:42:34.080 apparent confusion

00:42:35.060 from Pope Francis or

00:42:37.740 from people reporting

00:42:38.760 on Pope Francis what

00:42:39.980 are we to make of

00:42:40.780 this not only as

00:42:41.720 Catholics but as

00:42:42.600 Americans and people

00:42:45.180 living in 2018

00:42:46.000 I think people should

00:42:49.120 understand first of

00:42:50.140 all that the

00:42:51.960 Catholic church knows

00:42:53.240 what it believes it's

00:42:54.660 in the catechism of the

00:42:55.980 Catholic church that

00:42:57.560 hasn't been repealed

00:42:58.960 and Pope Francis

00:43:00.700 recently celebrated

00:43:01.940 its 25th anniversary

00:43:03.400 my other suggestion to

00:43:06.180 people is to calm

00:43:07.320 down don't spend your

00:43:09.500 time in the Catholic

00:43:10.420 blogosphere where it's

00:43:13.640 all hysteria all the

00:43:15.240 time from all sides

00:43:17.400 and to recognize that

00:43:20.340 the living parts of the

00:43:21.880 church whether you're

00:43:23.320 talking about renewal

00:43:24.460 movements in the

00:43:25.680 developed world great

00:43:26.940 parishes in America

00:43:28.300 campus ministries like

00:43:30.960 focus or the vibrant

00:43:33.220 church all over Africa

00:43:35.360 today one of the great

00:43:36.620 evangelical success

00:43:37.780 stories of the last

00:43:39.600 century these are all

00:43:41.000 the parts of the church

00:43:42.180 that have embraced

00:43:43.120 Catholicism in full and 0.81

00:43:45.700 the dying parts of the

00:43:47.020 church are the parts

00:43:48.220 that are still trying to

00:43:49.340 make the Catholic light

00:43:51.360 project work and it

00:43:53.620 doesn't Catholic light 0.96

00:43:55.040 is boring there's

00:43:57.120 nothing engaging and

00:43:58.900 enlivening about it

00:44:00.260 and if you want

00:44:01.900 evidence of that look

00:44:03.400 at the church in the

00:44:04.460 German speaking world

00:44:05.780 today immensely rich

00:44:08.240 the Catholic church in

00:44:10.120 Germany is the second 0.97

00:44:11.320 largest employer in the

00:44:13.340 country because of its

00:44:16.580 wealth and yet there's

00:44:18.300 five to seven percent

00:44:19.560 mass attendance why is

00:44:21.620 that the case because

00:44:23.080 they keep trying to make

00:44:24.480 Catholic light work and

00:44:25.900 Catholic light doesn't 1.00

00:44:27.080 work because it's

00:44:28.060 uninteresting that's so

00:44:29.640 true I have to say I

00:44:31.380 was a cradle Catholic

00:44:32.620 and then I sort of fell

00:44:33.720 away around the time of

00:44:34.740 my confirmation and to

00:44:37.340 me the the liturgy that

00:44:38.760 I knew was acoustic

00:44:40.080 guitars and you know

00:44:41.620 the the priest says some

00:44:43.160 nice sentimental words

00:44:44.680 about something and then

00:44:46.040 you all applaud at the

00:44:46.980 end and I don't know

00:44:47.820 that they probably have

00:44:48.760 kumbaya added in there

00:44:50.080 or something in all of

00:44:51.220 these suburban churches

00:44:52.180 and the experience of a

00:44:53.940 traditional liturgy or of

00:44:56.240 a more traditional

00:44:57.760 engagement with the

00:44:59.180 church itself it was

00:45:01.300 totally new and I think

00:45:02.200 there's a whole generation

00:45:03.100 of people for whom that

00:45:04.320 is totally new but this

00:45:05.580 is what really worries me

00:45:07.040 you see these numbers of

00:45:08.640 no religious affiliation

00:45:10.760 rising dramatically when

00:45:12.680 you look at millennials and

00:45:13.840 the generation after

00:45:14.800 millennials you see a huge

00:45:16.540 drops in marriage rates

00:45:17.860 and expect higher even

00:45:20.420 higher expected drops in

00:45:21.780 marriage rates to

00:45:22.360 continue no religious

00:45:23.640 affiliation very low mass

00:45:25.800 attendance is there any

00:45:27.200 way to act to not just

00:45:28.920 have a new great awakening

00:45:30.160 with some new coalition but

00:45:31.740 to create a new religious

00:45:33.260 movement in the United

00:45:34.700 States or is that a lost

00:45:35.720 cause no it's not a lost

00:45:37.860 cause the gospel is never

00:45:39.320 a lost cause what what

00:45:42.040 everyone in the Catholic

00:45:43.600 Church has to recognize is 0.79

00:45:46.340 that culturally transmitted

00:45:48.040 Catholicism Catholicism by

00:45:50.460 ethnic inheritance I'm a

00:45:52.640 Catholic because my great

00:45:54.000 grandmother came from

00:45:55.140 County Cork or whatever

00:45:56.480 right I'm a Catholic

00:45:57.500 because I'm an Italian and

00:45:58.880 therefore don't button all

00:45:59.860 of the buttons on my shirt

00:46:00.820 right that's over that that's

00:46:03.640 over throughout the

00:46:04.840 developed world and the

00:46:08.180 church has to become a much

00:46:09.400 more intentionally

00:46:10.320 evangelical and missionary

00:46:11.880 enterprise which I devoted

00:46:14.540 a whole book called

00:46:15.460 evangelical Catholicism to

00:46:17.860 to explaining the living

00:46:19.820 parts of the church are the

00:46:21.060 parts that have figured that

00:46:22.220 out and they are making

00:46:24.540 headway even among

00:46:26.040 millennials who may before

00:46:28.200 the before the gig is up

00:46:30.200 make us baby boomers look

00:46:32.260 good by comparison you know a

00:46:35.220 lot I hear a lot of these

00:46:37.060 millennial conservatives and

00:46:38.720 they'll say they'll say I'm

00:46:39.720 spiritual but I'm not

00:46:40.880 religious I don't want any 1.00

00:46:42.620 religious affiliation oh you

00:46:44.600 know Republicans should 0.96

00:46:45.560 stop talking about gay 1.00

00:46:46.860 marriage that's over they

00:46:48.900 should stop I suppose pro

00:46:50.580 life is actually on the rise

00:46:52.020 but what what do we make of

00:46:55.320 of an issue such as the

00:46:56.980 redefinition of marriage is

00:46:58.700 that a lost cause from the

00:47:00.360 perspective of American

00:47:01.320 conservatism or does marriage

00:47:03.300 have a definition and we need

00:47:04.900 to keep barreling along

00:47:06.520 defending that traditional

00:47:07.860 definition no matter how

00:47:09.340 unpopular politically it is

00:47:11.020 well I think it's a bad

00:47:13.620 idea when the state tries to

00:47:15.820 make us all believe that

00:47:17.560 something we know isn't true

00:47:19.340 is true I mean that that was

00:47:21.940 the reason to fight that

00:47:23.700 battle this was a vast

00:47:25.480 overreach on the part of the

00:47:27.520 state the state doesn't define

00:47:29.300 marriage marriage is a human

00:47:31.380 institution that antedates the

00:47:33.400 state both historically and and

00:47:36.220 is prior to the state if you'll

00:47:38.520 pardon the word metaphysically

00:47:40.720 it's it's a more fundamental

00:47:43.520 institution I actually proposed

00:47:48.980 six or seven years ago maybe

00:47:52.280 even longer than that that the

00:47:54.740 Catholic Church in the United

00:47:55.960 States get out of the civil

00:47:58.160 marriage business in other words

00:48:00.660 to stop having deacons and

00:48:02.380 priests act as officers of the

00:48:04.700 state signing state marriage

00:48:07.540 licenses because what the state

00:48:09.920 meant by marriage in those

00:48:11.840 licenses and what we mean by the

00:48:14.520 sacrament of matrimony are two 0.69

00:48:17.080 fundamentally different things my

00:48:21.220 older daughter was married five 0.99

00:48:26.220 years ago and the celebrant was

00:48:29.100 bishop Jim Connolly of Lincoln

00:48:31.100 Nebraska he asked me to mail back

00:48:36.100 to the state of Maryland the

00:48:38.760 marriage license which he had

00:48:40.100 signed I looked at it the day

00:48:41.940 after the wedding to make sure

00:48:43.120 everything had been filled out

00:48:44.260 properly and instead of saying

00:48:46.600 husband wife bride groom man woman

00:48:50.200 it said spouse one and spouse two and

00:48:53.620 then you have and this is signed by

00:48:56.160 James D Connolly Bishop of Lincoln

00:48:58.920 this is a complete disconnect right

00:49:01.920 we should acknowledge that people

00:49:05.180 can have a civilly registered

00:49:08.080 marriage but the church shouldn't be 1.00

00:49:11.920 saying that what now every state in

00:49:15.000 the United States has been compelled

00:49:16.600 by the Supreme Court to mean by

00:49:19.120 marriage is what we mean by marriage

00:49:21.100 just it's a falsification of reality

00:49:24.020 and as you were saying a moment ago

00:49:26.300 reality contact is kind of important

00:49:29.420 if we're going to get things right in

00:49:31.340 public life well I find when I speak to

00:49:34.200 people about political issues these

00:49:36.160 days especially in the Trump era where

00:49:38.440 the resistance has turned up their

00:49:40.760 yells and shrieks and gnashing of teeth

00:49:43.580 to a fever pitch they will get louder and

00:49:47.700 louder the more they are presented with

00:49:50.240 incontrovertible facts you know you'll

00:49:53.280 just point to the unemployment rate and

00:49:55.660 they'll they'll just start yelling and

00:49:57.060 shouting you down how do we bridge this

00:49:59.980 there is virtually no common culture

00:50:01.580 anymore people don't watch the same TV

00:50:03.440 shows they don't watch the same movies

00:50:04.660 they don't go to the same church they

00:50:06.540 don't believe the same basic things they

00:50:08.160 don't even share the same basic love of

00:50:10.080 country how how is how will it be

00:50:13.120 possible to bring everybody back under

00:50:15.280 this one reality or are we going to

00:50:17.260 crack up and fall apart well let's let's

00:50:20.120 take a look at something you mentioned a

00:50:22.520 moment ago the increasingly pro-life

00:50:27.300 views of the American people I've been

00:50:30.740 involved in in pro-life work for almost

00:50:33.860 40 years I've written a lot of stuff on

00:50:37.920 this I've made a lot of arguments I am

00:50:42.420 willing to recognize that what has really

00:50:44.820 turned this around is the sonogram is is

00:50:50.320 technology which makes it impossible for

00:50:54.580 the other side to say this is the

00:50:59.080 equivalent of an appendix or a tumor this

00:51:03.080 is this is not that and you can see that

00:51:05.840 so we need to figure out the imagery side of

00:51:11.700 of other issues we also need to keep calm

00:51:16.420 we don't have to debase the public

00:51:21.220 conversation the way this resistance

00:51:24.340 nonsense does we have to be the people

00:51:28.240 of lucidity and reason and good manners

00:51:32.800 and hope that over time that will have an

00:51:36.960 effect people don't like to be shouted

00:51:39.080 out all the time and the more the resistance

00:51:44.120 shouts the more it weakens its case

00:51:48.520 there was a enormous difference between

00:51:53.520 that really unspeakably vulgar resistance

00:51:57.340 rally here in Washington a few days after

00:52:01.060 President Trump's inauguration the one with 0.70

00:52:03.580 the pink hats and all of that yeah with all

00:52:05.760 all that stuff and the march for life a

00:52:08.880 week or so later the first was angry

00:52:13.140 vulgar nasty in your face the latter was

00:52:20.340 happy joyful celebratory young increasingly 0.99

00:52:25.640 female and much more attractive by any 0.57

00:52:31.880 reasonable measure so it's never it's never

00:52:38.260 give up time we've been through some very

00:52:42.100 rough patches in this country before and I

00:52:46.200 think part of the shrill and shrillness and

00:52:52.400 hysteria of the present moment particularly

00:52:55.440 among younger people has something to do with

00:52:58.960 the profound ignorance of history that that is

00:53:04.880 now part of the the public landscape when when half of

00:53:08.720 American college graduates last year did not know that

00:53:11.600 Franklin D Roosevelt was the president during the second

00:53:14.880 world war how do we expect them to know that there was a

00:53:18.880 huge mess in this country between 1850 and 1860 or that the

00:53:24.160 country was really on its knocked back on its heels during the

00:53:28.720 Great Depression and so forth and so on a recovery of of the

00:53:34.720 story the story of America which includes the story of American

00:53:39.040 renewal there's immense there are immense sources of renewal in this

00:53:44.080 country and we should tap those that is such an important

00:53:48.800 point the narrative the the from all the way from the

00:53:51.920 sonogram to the narrative we live our lives in narrative we live

00:53:54.880 our lives in a story and when you can illuminate that story then

00:53:59.040 you appear as you say happy and joyful and attractive and

00:54:02.880 that's pretty good I like a world that's happy joyful

00:54:05.040 attractive and increasingly female that's a good world to me and a 0.58

00:54:08.160 good note of hope to end on I've got to let you go I've taken up

00:54:11.040 enough of your time the book is so so good the fragility of order

00:54:14.640 Catholic reflections on turbulent times since nobody is educated these

00:54:18.320 days and everybody has been deprived of reading books uh during their

00:54:22.480 schooling start with this one because it's a very good one and

00:54:25.920 will illuminate a lot of what is going on in our culture I really enjoyed it

00:54:29.440 Mr. Weigel thank you so much for being here thanks for having me

00:54:34.000 it's very important that you start with books such as Mr. Weigel's The Fragility

00:54:39.040 of Order so that you can move on to really you know esoteric sophisticated

00:54:43.200 books like Reasons to Vote for Democrats a comprehensive guide but you need to

00:54:47.120 store it out with uh theology and philosophy and cultural uh uh

00:54:52.960 commentary so that you can move on to the greatest political tome in the

00:54:56.160 history of our republic okay that's our show

00:54:59.360 come back tomorrow uh even the soccer fans who I've doubtless alienated from my

00:55:03.920 show now I didn't realize how many people like soccer but anyway uh even them
