00:03:16.000 And the midnight deadline was to fund the government. What the Republicans tried to do
00:03:22.920 was pass a continuing resolution that would just fund the government at its current spending levels.

00:03:32.740 they're going to just keep it going while they negotiate a broader budget. Democrats said no.

00:04:43.700 nine months into President Trump's second term. Right now, the Democrats should be winning on a 0.56
00:04:52.020 lot of issues. That's just what happens. The midterm elections happen after a presidential election,
00:04:57.680 and the party that's out of the White House usually does really, really well. And the problem for the
00:05:01.800 Democrats right now is they're actually somehow still underwater on all the issues that matter to
00:05:06.720 people on crime, on the economy, on immigration, on foreign policy. They're tied on defensive
00:05:14.780 democracy, which is a kind of made up issue. It's a real sloganeered kind of issue that is supposed to
00:05:22.500 just buoy the Democrats. Even that, the Democrats and Republicans are statistically tied on. The only
00:05:27.760 issues that the Democrats are still doing all right on are women's rights, the environment, whatever,
00:05:34.820 end healthcare. Healthcare is one that the Democrats historically can lean on, and so they're doubling
00:05:39.680 down on that. And they're going to shut down the government in order to change healthcare,
00:05:46.440 or at least change the conversation now to focus on healthcare. Now, part of the reason the Democrats
00:05:51.920 feel like they can do that is Republicans always get blamed for a government shutdown. Maybe that will
00:05:56.340 happen again, Republicans. That's the conventional wisdom, is the Republicans always get blamed for the
00:06:00.160 shutdown. I'm not so sure it's going to work this time. You have to remember,
00:06:04.200 we've just endured a seismic political shift. The coalitions have changed. A lot of voters that
00:06:09.360 have historically gone to the Dems have moved significantly to the right, including black men, 0.67
00:06:14.380 including women of all kinds, including young women, especially young voters, moved 10 points in
00:06:19.380 2024. The GOP has flipped the script on a lot of issues, on things like tariffs, on things like
00:06:25.540 immigration to some degree, on things like foreign wars. So I'm not sure that the conventional holds,
00:06:30.240 conventional wisdom holds, rather. I'm not sure that past really is precedent here.
00:06:35.080 And on top of that, the voters gave Republicans a unified government. So it does not stand to reason
00:06:40.460 that the party that controls the entire government would shut down the government.
00:06:46.380 Also because, I think what the Democrats are counting on is the heavy libertarian influence
00:06:53.440 in the Republican Party for the entirety of my lifetime, for many decades at this point,
00:06:59.480 which suggests that Republicans are thrilled to shut the government down. The Republicans are
00:07:04.760 borderline anarchists. They don't want any government at all. They want to privatize everything.
00:07:09.140 Once again, though, after the Trump revolution in 2016, that's not really the case. That's not,
00:07:14.900 there are plenty of Republicans and conservatives who do want to wield the government. In fact,
00:07:19.700 it's a discordant line of argument for the Democrats because the Democrats have spent the last seven
00:07:24.160 months claiming that Trump is a fascist dictator who wants to turn the government on all of his
00:07:29.100 enemies, that he's an authoritarian, that he's using the government too much. So again, you can't
00:07:33.880 simultaneously make both of those arguments. These Republicans hate the government. They want to
00:07:37.540 dismantle the government. Also, they want to build up the government and use it to pummel their
00:07:41.400 enemies. You have to pick one if you want to make sense. But the one thing the Democrats do have to do,
00:07:48.400 is change the conversation. Because at this point in Trump's first term, the Democrats should be doing
00:07:53.560 really well in their poll numbers, and they're not. In fact, their unfavorability rating is as high as
00:08:00.420 it's ever been, which is really, really bad news. They have to do something. And I think this
00:08:06.600 government shutdown comes out of sheer political desperation for Democrats. Shoot, the economy was
00:08:12.960 supposed to collapse. The tariffs were supposed to destroy the economy. The tariffs were supposed to
00:08:17.580 lead to massive inflation. The tariffs, and none of that happened. Even Jerome Powell, who's being
00:08:22.580 rhetorically pummeled by Trump every single day. Even Jerome Powell, chairman of the Fed, said,
00:08:26.360 no, actually inflation has not come about because of the tariffs. Well, the immigration crackdown,
00:08:32.220 that was supposed to work for Democrats. No, actually, the Republican immigration policies
00:08:35.900 are still very popular. Very popular. Well, Trump was supposed to get us into World War III.
00:08:41.900 Actually, he hasn't. Well, well, well. So Democrats have these really high unfavorables. They have to
00:08:48.420 change the conversation away from crime in the cities. Every second we're talking about crime in
00:08:54.400 the cities, it's bad for Democrats because the Democrats are the ones letting their own constituents 0.96
00:08:59.200 be murdered by criminals and taking the side of the criminals when they do it. Every second that we spend
00:09:04.720 talking, even about the economy, which does have some underlying issues, of course, even that,
00:09:09.620 it's not working for the Democrats. Every second we're talking about really just about any issue.
00:09:15.760 The only issue that might be able to move the needle for them is health care.
00:09:21.540 And the only way that they can distract from the conversations that are going on,
00:09:26.040 probably first and foremost, the political violence from the left, which has not had success
00:09:31.500 persuading voters in recent years, and so has increasingly threatened its opponents,
00:09:37.280 and actually celebrated even the murder of one of its most prominent opponents.

00:10:03.920 option. They have to do something to change a conversation, and they have to do anything they
00:10:07.920 can to make the conversation about health care. Whether or not that will work remains to be seen

00:11:33.100 27th, so quite recent. Views on whether the Democrats should or should not shut down the government if
00:11:39.600 their demands are not met. So right there off the top, I know what Democrats are going to say.
00:11:44.880 They're going to say, that's a push poll. That's a loaded question. Why are you blaming the shutdown on
00:11:51.100 the Democrats? And the answer is because the Democrats are obviously the ones doing it.
00:11:57.280 The Republicans control the government. They very much do not want to shut down the government. The
00:12:01.660 only party advocating to shut down the government is the Democrats. Even the New York Times is
00:12:06.400 admitting it. So don't go after the New York Times if you're on the left. Trust me, if the New York
00:12:12.200 Times could spin this in a way that would blame Republicans, I'm sure they would. They just can't.
00:12:16.040 It's not possible. So if the Times isn't going to succeed at it, I don't think you,
00:12:21.660 random Democrat congressmen, are going to succeed at it either. What does the poll say? All respondents,
00:12:27.840 only 27% say that the Dems should shut down the government. 65% say they should not. Only one in
00:12:34.340 four voters, just about, says the Dems should shut down the government. 65% no. Among Democrats,
00:12:43.160 only 47% say that they should shut down the government. So this government shutdown is
00:12:49.700 unpopular. Less than 50% support. Even among Democrats. Among independents, only 32% think
00:12:59.980 support the Democrat shutdown. Among Republicans, unsurprisingly, 5%. So first of all, those poll
00:13:08.780 numbers alone show you who is shutting down the government. No group, no group wants to shut down
00:13:16.520 the government. There is no majority of any political group in the country that wants to shut down the
00:13:21.800 government. But in as much as the different groups support or don't support it, the support
00:13:29.000 is only among Democrats. Basically, no Republicans support this. So in my mind, if the media do not
00:13:39.400 have their hegemonic power that they once did, if the spin machine for the Democrats is not firing
00:13:47.680 on all cylinders, I don't know that this is going to be blamed on Republicans. If even the New York
00:13:53.820 Times today cannot blame this on the Republicans, this seriously could backfire for the Democrats.
00:14:01.480 And meanwhile, Trump is willing to take advantage. He says, look, I don't want to shut this thing down.
00:14:06.920 Things are going pretty well. But if you're going to shut it down and you're going to make us get rid
00:14:11.200 of these federal workers, then we're not going to play your game and merely furlough a lot of the
00:14:15.660 federal workers and then, you know, give them their jobs back with back pay and extra pay.
00:14:20.220 No, if you really want to shut this thing down, fine, then we're going to use this opportunity
00:14:25.280 that you're foisting upon us in order to continue to streamline government, which is one of the
00:14:29.940 things we were elected with back in November. In fact, this is one of the things we won the popular
00:14:36.460 vote on, namely bringing efficiency back to government, Doge. This could really backfire.
00:14:42.080 This could really, really backfire for the Dems. And even still, it shows you the desperation of
00:14:48.480 their position. Even still, if I were Hakeem Jeffries, I might shut down the government anyway.
00:14:54.280 Not because I think that's likely to help the Democrats. It's just that everything else seems
00:15:00.680 worse. If the Democrats continue on their current trajectory, they're going to get blown out in the
00:15:04.980 midterms and maybe in 2028. So in some ways, it's the least bad option for Dems. But I see a lot of
00:15:12.340 upside here for the Republicans. I don't see a lot of upside for Democrats. Meanwhile, the essential
00:15:18.220 services are moving ahead. And this is the real threat for Dems. So they're going to stand around
00:15:22.820 and they're going to whine about how they want to, they're going to hold the government hostage in
00:15:26.800 order to ram through a bunch of plausibly popular healthcare proposals. But some of them are pretty
00:15:34.120 unpopular and the ones that pertain to immigration are really unpopular. But at least we're not
00:15:40.200 talking about ICE, right? Well, not really, because the Department of Homeland Security is an essential
00:15:44.060 service. Law enforcement is an essential service. So while the Democrats are putting on this sideshow,
00:15:50.480 Trump is going in and enforcing the law in a popular way. Like a federal raid just happened in
00:15:55.660 Chicago. 300 ICE agents rappelling down from helicopters, targeting a building full of illegals. And
00:16:02.360 we're not just talking about the gardener. We're not just talking about the nice abuela who cleans your
00:16:07.340 home or something. We're talking about Trende Aragua terrorists. 0.75
00:16:14.580 It led 300 federal officials to that apartment complex. Some even rappelled down from Blackhawks
00:16:21.800 onto the rooftop in order to help secure that perimeter. Now, they were searching for suspected
00:16:26.760 members of the violent Venezuelan gang, Trende Aragua. Of course, TDA has been designated as
00:16:32.380 a terrorist organization under the Trump administration. Now, it was the biggest show
00:16:36.500 of force that we've ever seen on the ground here. We had agencies, FBI, Border Patrol, ICE, and ATF
00:16:42.720 all involved here. And they were all looking for targets in that same exact building. It was a five
00:16:47.600 story building. It was a tall task for them. And anything could have gone wrong. But luckily,
00:16:52.280 the operations went pretty smoothly. Preliminary reports show that about 30 illegal immigrants were
00:16:58.440 arrested in this operation. Some of them suspected Trende Aragua.
00:17:02.720 Okay, so 30 illegals arrested. Massive show of force here. 10x the number of people arrested show up
00:17:10.300 as law enforcement. Really, really smart. Smart as a matter of justice. You need to arrest these people.
00:17:18.580 But also really smart politics. And bold, by the way, because you're talking about serious gangsters.
00:17:25.500 You're talking about a foreign terrorist organization, Trende Aragua. This could have turned into a
00:17:30.580 shootout in Chicago. I guess a shootout in Chicago is, you know, just a day ending and why. But had this
00:17:36.900 gone south, had some innocent or largely innocent person been killed, had a law enforcement official
00:17:43.460 been killed. That could have been really bad. That did not happen. And ICE rounds up these people.
00:17:52.980 And so the Democrats are in this awful position. They either need to do what is obviously right,
00:17:58.460 and what is obviously politically popular, and say, okay, all right, I guess it's good that we're
00:18:04.180 arresting Trende Aragua gangsters, human traffickers, people who kill Americans, a foreign terrorist
00:18:11.320 organization. Yeah, I guess that's good. They can either take that side, or, I know it sounds
00:18:17.500 preposterous, or they can take the side of the terrorists, the foreign national terrorists
00:18:23.940 killing Americans. And you know which side they took? Here we have governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker,
00:18:32.340 thinks he's going to run for president in 2028. Democrat, Mr. Pritzker says on Twitter, to Donald
00:18:38.440 Trump, stop using military troops and ICE to invade and disrupt American cities. First of all,
00:18:49.360 federal troops don't invade American cities to carry out federal law. The federal government that the
00:18:55.840 federal troops refer to is the American government. You're part of America, Mr. Pritzker. Maybe you don't
00:19:01.620 feel that way. Maybe you don't like America. Maybe you wish you weren't part of America. I don't see
00:19:05.820 a lot of American flags at the Democrat rallies, so I know you have an antipathy to the country.
00:19:12.540 But they're your troops. They're your countrymen. You say, thank you. Thank you,
00:19:19.640 American servicemen, for protecting American citizens by carrying out basic American laws. No,
00:19:25.040 stop using military troops to invade and disrupt American cities. Stop sending in the Americans 0.99
00:19:32.560 to fix my bad governance. Stop, he says, calling your political opponents enemies of the United

00:22:45.480 murdered and slaughtered by the bushel basket as long as he thinks it will give him an electoral
00:22:53.900 advantage. And the chief way that the Democrats have tried to gain an electoral advantage is by
00:22:58.060 flooding the country with illegals, largely including these criminals and these gangsters. 1.00
00:23:03.760 Who's acting like the tyrant? It's the Democrats. This is a terrible response by Pritzker and by the
00:23:12.420 Democrats broadly. But once again, I don't think we can leave the analysis at, wow, these dumb
00:23:18.860 Democrats, boy, they should get their act together, right? Because it's actually, they're in a tougher
00:23:23.000 spot than that. You have to have almost a little more sympathy for them. What are they going to do?
00:23:29.380 Are they suddenly going to come out in defense of enforcing immigration law, in defense of national
00:23:34.580 sovereignty, in defense of borders, in defense of the right of citizens to determine who gets to come
00:23:38.960 to their country? No, if they do that, they're conceding the whole point to Trump. And they're
00:23:45.600 going to lose the electoral advantage that they were cynically trying to gain by flooding the country
00:23:48.780 with foreigners. Are they suddenly going to defend law enforcement? Then they're ceding the point to 0.99
00:23:54.200 Trump. They're in a tough spot. Trump has staked out virtually all of the popular positions on issues
00:24:02.740 with a few exceptions, right? The health care is the Hail Mary for the Democrats. But with a few
00:24:08.760 exceptions, Trump has all the popular views. That's how he won the popular vote. Democrats,
00:24:15.220 on the other hand, they're on the wrong side of virtually every single issue.
00:24:19.900 And so long as that dynamic continues, so long as the Democrats remain Democrats,
00:24:24.740 then Trump is going to enforce the law. He's going to look like a hero. Pritzker is going to look
00:24:29.880 feckless at best and nefarious at worst. Now, you don't just need to take my word for it.
