00:03:54.760 not getting enough play. We'll get to all of it. First, though, I want to get into this Patrick

00:03:58.800 Clancy interview. This was the big banner interview, the relaunch of 60 Minutes. They've

00:04:03.340 hired the conservative Ross Douthat from the New York Times. This was his first big break on 60

00:04:08.180 minutes with the tabloid true crime story that has had America talking for over a month now.

00:04:16.360 Everybody tunes in, and what they got, I think, was something totally different than what they

00:04:22.120 were expecting. In other words, the interview was extremely important. It was one of the most

00:04:27.240 important interviews, I think, to air in decades, but not for the reasons that everyone was expecting,

00:04:33.460 not for the reasons that they're even talking about now. I'll play just a couple of clips from

00:04:37.680 the interview to get into what it was. What everyone was expecting was some new detail about

00:04:42.480 the crime, some new detail about Lindsay Clancy's mental state in the lead up to her committing the

00:04:47.160 crime, some explosive revelation about the trial and her guilt or innocence. That's not what we

00:04:54.180 got. We got something actually much deeper and more important. One big revelation is on how

00:05:00.880 Patrick Clancy feels about his wife, which is that he says he's forgiven her, but the shock is

00:05:08.040 She has never asked for forgiveness.

00:05:11.400 I saw headlines that said, you know, killer mom and baby murderer, monster, 0.67

00:05:17.560 and none of them were accurate. 0.98

00:05:20.040 I believed that it was her mental illness that caused that. 0.85

00:05:23.820 So I shared those words. 0.53

00:05:26.460 And I think when it comes to forgiveness,

00:05:28.680 I also felt that if I didn't get there,

00:05:33.440 I would be eaten up inside forever.

00:06:36.240 a point that not even Lindsay Clancy or her lawyer make. But we know he's going to be totally

00:06:41.380 pilloried for this answer. But what does he say? He says, I have forgiven her. She has never asked

00:06:46.600 forgiveness. Hold on. He says, I don't blame her personally. I think this is mostly due to her

00:06:52.960 mental illness. And I asked her if she remembered it. She said it was like a dream. But even if 0.71

00:06:58.100 that were all true, if you did something accidentally, if you did something because

00:07:02.700 of a fit of a psychosis, wouldn't you still ask forgiveness? Wouldn't you still express some kind

00:07:09.860 of sorrow or regret? He says she hasn't done any of that. So my takeaway about Lindsay Clancy from

00:07:15.980 that comment is the woman is simply a monster. Whatever else, she's just a monster. And yet, 1.00

00:07:25.420 Patrick Clancy says, I have forgiven her. Now, there's a Christian read of this, which is, well, 0.57

00:07:30.280 we're called to forgive people. We're called to forgive other people's trespasses because we want

00:07:36.820 God in heaven to forgive our trespasses. And we want to be forgiven in as much as we can forgive.

00:07:42.400 So there is a Christian read of that, but this seems more human than that. This seems more

00:07:48.400 terrestrial than that. What he's saying is, I had to forgive her because otherwise I would be eaten

00:07:54.740 up inside. So it's not even that I'm chiefly forgiving her because I think she deserves my

00:08:00.380 forgiveness. I'm just forgiving her because I will be destroyed. I will be eaten up inside

00:08:06.940 by my resentment and my fury and my rage if I don't forgive her. So it's not that I want to

00:08:13.220 forgive her. It's not that I want to move on. But the only way that I can survive

00:08:18.400 is by forgiving her.

00:08:21.380 Then he goes into how he celebrated his kid's next birthday.

00:08:28.140 Five weeks after I moved to New York on May 26th,

00:08:31.580 I had to figure out how I'm going to celebrate Calen's first birthday.

00:08:38.120 And how do you celebrate your son's first birthday months after he's passed away?

00:08:46.080 And so I go to St. Patrick's Cathedral.

00:08:48.400 I light a candle, and I say, I love you, buddy.

00:08:52.560 And I walk out on Fifth Avenue, and I start crying my eyes out.

00:09:11.600 and the reason it's so so important is because it's it's just a guy suffering that's why it's

00:09:20.780 important and our culture doesn't permit that the the left does not deal with suffering they

00:09:29.380 won't acknowledge suffering they'll deny all manner of suffering and try to sublimate it into

00:09:34.060 political revolution this is why the real radical leftists they no longer even say rest in peace

00:09:39.400 It's requiescat in pace, which is a prayer that we say when people die.

00:10:19.200 This is because a lot of what passes for American Christianity lacks a theology of suffering.

00:10:25.520 Christianity has a very longstanding theology of suffering. We say we're going to kiss it up to God.

00:10:29.840 We have a sense that our sufferings are sanctifying experiences, that we can offer it up,

00:10:35.020 And this will somehow help us grow in holiness and bind us more closely to Christ, especially as Christ suffers on the cross.

00:10:42.940 But American Christianity, we're a little worse at that.

00:10:51.000 At a lot of the American kind of funerals, even putatively Christian funerals, we say, no, you shouldn't be sad.

00:11:05.440 claims with more confidence than is traditional in Christianity.

00:11:08.460 But regardless, even beyond that, we say, no, no, no, you got to be,

00:11:14.760 We're not even going to have funerals anymore.

00:11:16.360 We're going to have celebrations of life.

00:11:18.040 We can't even grieve at a funeral.

00:11:26.100 In other words, as if it were somehow a mark of a weak faith, if you are to grieve.

00:11:40.900 And on the left and the right, we have this impulse to take whatever grief we have and to transform it into some political crusade.

00:11:51.300 But that's not what's going on here.

00:11:53.680 The Patrick Clancy interview reveals all of that to be weak, reveals all of that to be insufficient,

00:12:00.560 because there's no crusade here. There's no law to change. Are we going to now pass a law? Hey,

00:12:05.260 we're going to pass the new Lindsey Clancy law. Moms are no longer allowed to kill their kids. 1.00

00:12:09.740 Some on the left want to pass new laws that make it easier for moms to kill their kids.

00:12:13.020 But for the people who are grieving with this guy, who feel sympathy for this guy,

00:12:17.900 There's no law.

00:12:19.280 There's no crusade.

00:12:21.400 There's no great illuminating fact, some kind of enlightenment that changes the way we think.

00:12:28.480 No, it's just sad.

00:12:30.320 It's just a guy grieving.

00:12:32.540 And there's not all that much to be done.

00:12:35.060 The most you can do in this case is forgive the perpetrator, very difficult to do, and go light a candle and cry.

00:12:43.740 You can't actually cure suffering.

00:12:46.340 the political radicals on the left and the feel-good power of positive thinking people

00:12:52.460 that you sometimes see on the right, what they're all after is trying to eliminate suffering from

00:12:57.440 life. If you just take this one health supplement, if you just enact this one political revolution,

00:13:04.400 if we just kill the kulaks and transform the political order a little bit and you give the 1.00

00:13:08.820 government a little bit more money and you pass some new law, then we're not going to have 1.00

00:13:11.740 suffering anymore, but that doesn't work. It doesn't actually work. There just is suffering,

00:13:16.620 and it's something that we have to grapple with in this life, in this veil of tears that we find

00:13:22.740 ourselves in. And the Patrick Clancy interview puts that on display. How do we deal with that?

00:13:29.920 How do we look in our quiet hours and just deal with the fact that life deals us sad

00:13:37.300 circumstances sometimes. What are we to do with that? And there's no resting in power. There's

00:13:43.700 no, yes, there was this crime, but it's actually going to redound to greater good. It's actually

00:13:49.940 a good thing in a way. No. At the scale of eschatology, maybe that's soteriology, maybe

00:13:55.020 that's the case. But in this world, no. How are we going to deal with suffering? Really powerful.

00:14:01.440 So obviously, we should just pray for Patrick Lancy and pray for ourselves because hopefully

00:14:06.600 none of us ever has to experience something that horrific in our lives, but we're all going to

00:14:11.060 experience sad stuff. How are we going to deal with it? I think a lot of the mental health

00:14:14.880 crisis, as it's called, crisis of meaning, the crisis of social alienation, the loneliness

00:14:21.060 epidemic, a lot of it comes back to this problem. We don't know how to suffer. And Patrick Clancy

00:14:26.200 is giving a masterclass in that. Okay. Speaking of suffering and death, the political activists

00:14:32.800 are causing a lot of suffering for Ed Sheeran,

00:14:34.760 who finally caved.

00:14:35.800 You know this whole story.

00:14:37.620 Ed Sheeran's doing a tour.

00:14:38.880 He invited Macklemore to do the tour.

00:14:40.520 Macklemore, I guess, is some singer or whatever.

00:14:42.320 And Macklemore decided to hijack the stage

00:14:44.580 to make it all about his views

00:14:46.180 on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

00:14:48.300 And then activists on the other side

00:14:49.800 who own the venues said that Ed Sheeran

00:14:53.060 had to fire Macklemore from the tour

00:14:54.520 because they don't like his views on Israel and Palestine.

00:14:56.820 And then Ed Sheeran finally did it.

00:14:58.080 But then he caught a little bit of backlash

00:16:47.880 Now, I want to address the question of where I stand in the situation in Israel and Palestine

00:16:53.780 and whether my doing this concert here tonight implies where I stand.

00:16:57.780 I have tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind

00:17:01.780 because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division.

00:17:05.780 About humanity, not politics.

00:17:11.780 But this is a humanitarian issue and I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore.

00:17:17.780 What happened in Israel and at the Nova Music Festival on October 7th

00:17:21.780 October 7th was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is 0.79

00:17:28.940 catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of

00:17:35.880 devastation and loss of civilians' lives, of children's lives. And the systemic injustice

00:17:43.240 we're seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked. Okay, now the most interesting thing

00:17:48.900 about this clip. It's being reported, and Sheeran sobs on stage over the Israel Palace. He didn't

00:17:54.180 sob on stage. He's giving a very measured take. Notice, though, where he gets the applause.

00:18:00.960 He doesn't get the applause for speaking out against Israel, nor does he get the applause

00:18:07.660 for defending Israel and criticizing Hamas. He doesn't get the applause for either of those.

00:18:12.000 He gets the applause for his preface when he says, look, I've tried not to be a pundit. I'm

00:18:16.320 not a political commentator. I just want to play my tunes and make people feel good at a concert.

00:18:22.720 That's where he gets the applause. That's where the whole crowd is going,

00:18:25.400 woo, yeah, you're right. Don't talk about politics. We don't want that.

00:18:29.400 But Ed Sheeran has been forced to talk about politics because of a very small number of

00:18:35.360 political activists on both sides of this issue. The idea that there is some huge number of

00:18:42.900 ardently pro-Palestine activists in the Ed Sheeran audience or the broader public is absurd.

00:18:49.260 The handful of people who are really hardcore free Palestine and the apartheid Israel regime

00:18:55.260 wearing the keffies marching in the streets, it's like four people in Greta Thunberg, okay?

00:18:59.400 It's not a real constituency. Likewise, the people who are ardently pro-Israel,

00:19:05.480 who demand that we dehumanize the Palestinian Arabs and we say that the defense of the Israeli

00:19:12.120 state is the most important. There are like five of those people too. The activists wield an undue 0.68

00:19:18.520 amount of influence in the political conversation, but they don't, most people don't care that much.

00:19:24.460 You want to know the thing that's going to equally irritate the pro-Palestine people and the pro-Israel

00:19:28.640 people. Most people don't care that much about the Israel-Palestine conflict. I find it interesting.

00:19:33.660 It's a, it's an intractable geopolitical problem. It goes back millennia, but in terms of the

00:19:38.600 people who actually, it's very, very few. And that's what's being represented in the applause.

00:19:44.740 And so why is Ed Sheeran doing this? The reason Ed Sheeran is doing this is because

00:19:49.700 both of those groups wield a disproportionate amount of influence in the conversation.

00:19:53.920 The pro-Palestine groups control a lot of public opinion institutions, and the pro-Israel groups

00:20:01.580 wield a lot of power within various industries as well. And so it was the pro-Palestine groups

00:20:07.600 who are ginning up, who are creating all of that fervor such that Macklemore decides to

00:20:12.340 hijack Ed Sheeran's concert tour. And then it was the pro-Israel groups who got the venue owners

00:20:18.020 to try to shut down the tour and to pressure Ed Sheeran into firing Macklemore.

00:20:22.060 And here's Macklemore squeezed in the middle. And so what is his opinion? The opinion he offers is

00:20:27.720 it's really bad what Hamas did to the state of Israel on October 7th, 2023.

00:20:33.000 and Israel was maybe a little heavy-handed

00:20:36.640 in some of the response to that in Gaza

00:20:39.000 and the Israeli settlers are committing crimes

00:20:41.520 in the West Bank.

00:20:43.840 In other words, he has the most moderate view

00:20:46.360 that basically every reasonable person believes in.

00:20:49.880 No moral person can possibly say 0.98

00:20:52.720 that what Hamas and the Gazans did 0.89

00:20:54.980 to the state of Israel on October 7th

00:20:59.880 And I think most observers would say

00:21:01.960 the Israeli state sometimes is a little bit heavy handed in their military operations.

00:21:07.600 And basically every reasonable person, including up to the United States State Department, 0.55

00:21:13.840 says that the Israeli settlers are expanding way too much in the West Bank and they need to cut it 0.85

00:21:17.180 out. In other words, Ed Sheeran just goes on stage and goes, you want my political opinion? 0.97

00:21:21.240 I'm going to give you the most normie and unobjectionable political opinion ever.

00:21:26.160 And people don't even really want that. Good on Sheeran. People are knocking Sheeran because

00:21:30.860 they're saying, oh, he's capitulating either to, they're accusing him of opposite crimes,

00:21:35.960 either of capitulating to the pro-Israel forces or the pro-Palestine activists or whatever.

00:21:40.960 He's not doing that. He's saying, you know, my view, my view is the most normie view,

00:21:44.160 which is held by probably 85% of people on this subject. And by the way, I don't want to talk

00:21:51.260 about politics from my concert stage. I'm not competent to do it. I'm not a political pundit.

00:21:56.020 I'm not interested in doing it. And you're all here to hear music. And guess what? The entire

00:22:00.200 audience goes crazy for that statement. I think Ed Sheeran handled, I might be the only person

00:22:05.260 saying this. I think Ed Sheeran handled this very, very well. And I think that the main takeaway

00:22:11.200 from this whole non-traversy, this whole tempest in a teapot, which was mostly a product of social

00:22:17.860 media, is that the vast majority of people are irritated with the pro-Palestine activists and

00:22:22.920 the pro-Israel activists for hijacking a venue, a medium that is totally inappropriate for political

00:22:31.540 commentary. I'm with Sharon. Good on Sharon. Okay. The other reason he had to say it actually

00:22:37.540 has nothing to do with the conflict. It's just that he has to save face so he doesn't look like 0.71

00:22:41.740 he's being bullied by either group of protesters. So it's a face-saving thing to say, hey, I'm still

00:22:47.100 in charge of my shows. I'm still in charge of my concert tour. But he is the most sympathetic

00:22:51.380 figure of all of the activists in this whole episode. Now, speaking of international conflict,

00:22:56.480 some pretty big news after a year and a half now of lobbying for it. President Trump has just

00:25:03.220 Now, the people who are attacking Trump over this, their argument is that the deal that

00:25:08.540 he supposedly got is no different from the deal we already had going back to 1951 that gave the

00:25:14.620 U.S. a lot of military rights in Greenland. And that is not true. Notice here the inclusion of

00:25:20.280 Denmark. There are many people who have been hearing about this whole conflict who don't

00:25:24.020 even realize that Greenland is owned by Denmark. So a lot of the conflict from the super libs is

00:25:30.760 over supposed imperialism. They say Trump is trying to bring back imperialism and colonialism

00:25:35.220 by taking the sovereign nation of Greenland. Hey, Greenland isn't sovereign. It isn't really

00:25:41.680 sovereign. Greenland is owned by Denmark, by this tiny little country. Why does Denmark own

00:25:45.680 Greenland? So that objection was totally ridiculous. We have to engage in negotiations 0.95

00:25:51.220 with Denmark. And what we got is different than what we had. So the way that this differs from

00:25:55.900 the 1951 agreement is that Greenland is now a direct party to the treaty. Previously, we were

00:26:03.960 just dealing with Denmark because Denmark owned Greenland. But increasingly, there has been some

00:26:08.020 movement for Greenland to have independence from Denmark. So if the United States is going to secure

00:26:13.420 its interests in Greenland and the Arctic and fend off enemies like Russia and China,

00:26:18.520 we're going to have to include Greenland more directly, just as a hedge against Greenland

00:26:22.920 independence. A lot of the commentary around Trump's provocations in this issue have been

00:26:29.020 that we're alienating our longtime ally Denmark. But that's not totally the issue. A bigger issue

00:26:35.280 is that Greenland might break away. We need to secure our interests here. So the 1951 pact that

00:26:40.740 we had with Denmark was sufficient for a long time for the Cold War. We built up a lot of military

00:26:47.740 bases and resources in Greenland during the Cold War. And then the Cold War ended. We began to pull

00:26:54.040 some of our military resources away. This new deal is with Denmark and Greenland, and it will 0.51

00:27:00.000 remain in effect even if Greenland goes independent. The other thing the deal says is that non-NATO

00:27:05.960 countries cannot establish bases or maintain troops in Greenland without the direct written

00:27:11.540 approval of the United States. The previous treaty did not have that. Maybe it wasn't likely that

00:27:16.760 Greenland was going to invite the Russians or the Chinese to come station some troops in Greenland,

00:27:20.300 but there was nothing preventing them from doing that. This treaty says no chance. Greenland

00:27:25.100 effectively belongs to the United States. Next thing it includes, the new treaty. Again,

00:27:30.480 we haven't seen the text of this, but this is the announcement today, and no one really seems

00:27:33.420 to be disputing it. The next part of this is that US approval will be required not just for foreign

00:27:38.860 powers bringing their military to Greenland, but even for foreign powers bringing their private

00:27:42.760 companies to Greenland. Any sensitive investments must be approved by the United States. Don't

00:27:49.920 forget, Greenland is rich in critical minerals, in mining, and all sorts of other resources that

00:27:57.940 are relevant to security and also to private industry. And China and Russia and other enemies

00:28:02.980 of the United States might rather want to get their hands on some of those. The 1951 agreement

00:28:08.820 would have let them do it. This new agreement says no chance. You're not getting any of that 0.89

00:28:12.520 with that American approval, even more clearly making the case that Greenland now technically

00:28:18.780 belongs to Denmark, might become officially independent, but practically speaking, belongs

00:28:24.520 to the United States. Even as a matter of the military, we are now treating Greenland as part

00:28:29.600 of Northern Command. We're treating Greenland as part of looking northward toward the American

00:28:36.760 interests rather than looking toward Europe. Finally, and this is where the rubber meets the

00:28:41.560 road, the US is going to rebuild the military in Greenland. We are going to build up our troops

00:28:47.340 in Greenland. Now, according to the 1951 treaty, we would have had every right to do that.

00:28:53.780 The thing is, though, practically speaking, we would have had to negotiate it because it would

00:28:57.240 have been a major change. For the last 30 years, we've drawn down our troops. We've drawn down

00:29:01.340 our resources in Greenland. We're going to have to build those back up because we are looking at,

00:29:05.800 or potentially already in, a Cold War with China, and we're in a major proxy war with Russia.

00:30:15.160 way more than he actually wants. And then when he comes back a little bit, everybody can have

00:30:20.160 a win-win. It's a big diplomatic victory here for Trump because Trump has irritated a lot of

00:30:24.820 our partners. That criticism of Trump, I think, is legitimate. But in the end here, you have the

00:30:31.520 Europeans celebrating this, Macron celebrating this, the Dane celebrating this, Greenland

00:30:36.100 celebrating this. Greenland's a little more trepidatious, I think. And America can celebrate.

00:30:40.180 it's a win. The people who are very upset about this deal are China and Russia. And that was the

00:30:45.800 whole point of the campaign in the first place. It was good stuff. Speaking of other Trump wins,

00:30:50.980 DOJ here just keeps the hits coming. You remember a month or two ago, we were talking about how

00:30:57.380 the DOJ secured a major victory in court, was able to force a hospital that transed kids

00:31:04.520 to stop transing the kids, and then to give a major settlement to establish a clinic that 0.59

00:31:09.980 would provide free care for the kids that they had transed to come back and be detransed. 0.99

00:31:14.700 Major, major win. Really one of the biggest formal moves in the process of eradicating 1.00

00:31:43.620 of that, NYU Langone is going to pay eight and a half million bucks. University of Penn Medical

00:31:48.500 Center is going to pay almost a million bucks. They're going to establish detransition clinics

00:31:53.420 to help the poor kids who were destroyed by that leftist ideology that the left forced all of us

00:31:59.460 to accept or face social ostracism, losing our jobs, punishment in schools, and so on. This was

00:32:05.640 their most cherished fad for several years there in the early 2020s, and is now being destroyed,

00:32:13.240 not just by the popular culture, but by the heavy hand of the state, which is taking money from them

00:32:19.720 through the courts to make them do the right thing and help the kids. This is a win. Major,

00:32:25.580 major win. And the DOJ said it when the first hospital agreed to do it. They said,

00:32:30.040 this is the beginning of many such cases. Every single hospital in the United States

00:32:35.780 that was trancing the kids, I think really trancing anybody, but certainly trancing the kids,

00:32:41.140 needs to pay for it. Not just stop. They're all going to stop. They're basically all going to

00:35:08.460 followed for up to 25 years. There were over 16, almost 17,000 population controls. Because Finland

00:35:15.160 has kind of a nanny state because their health registers are mandatory because the patients

00:35:19.900 cannot opt out of them. This data set is the most complete transgender data set we have ever had, 0.96

00:35:26.240 and what did they find? They found severe psychiatric morbidity is common among gender

00:35:31.000 referred adolescents and appears to be more prevalent in those referred after the recent

00:35:36.320 surge of referrals. Psychiatric means do not subside after medical gender reassignment.

00:35:42.280 Among the young people who went under medical gender reassignment,

00:35:46.200 psychiatric morbidity increased markedly during the follow-up.

00:35:50.800 So before they got all the trans treatments, psychiatric morbidity was 9.8%.

00:44:37.300 people. They need a little more funding. No. The problem is you've commoditized human life
