The Alberta teacher strike has to be one of the most overblown Canadian political issues this decade so far.
00:00:10.660
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, despite media reporting and what the Alberta NDP says, has been doing an excellent job.
00:00:18.640
She gave a very generous offer to the Alberta Teachers Association that they rejected twice
00:00:24.720
and pretended that she was being very mean to them because she didn't give them even more.
00:00:30.000
This entire situation has nothing to do with teachers, it has nothing to do with students,
00:00:34.540
and it has nothing to do with parents or classroom sizes.
00:00:38.160
This has to do with the left trying to get Danielle Smith.
00:00:42.620
They have no leg to stand on, but they are just using the idea of teacher striking in order to put pressure on Danielle Smith
00:00:50.900
or try and smear her reputation in front of the public.
00:00:54.520
Remember, the media, the NDP, and especially the unions will never say that any concessions are too much for the teachers.
00:01:03.500
I would even say the UCP probably offered more than they had to to the teachers for what would qualify as a reasonable offer.
00:01:10.420
The Alberta government offered the ATA a 12% raise over the next four years, which would actually be 17% for some teachers
00:01:21.320
because of the way that changes would be made to the wage brackets, to the salary brackets.
00:01:26.520
And they were also going to add 3,000 new teachers over the next several years and 1,500 teacher or classroom assistants.
00:01:35.860
This would have taken care of any wage concerns that the teachers union would have had,
00:01:42.040
and it was going to reduce classroom sizes as well as deal with the issue of classroom complexity
00:01:47.780
from kids with special needs or who have English as a second language.
00:01:52.540
The ATA rejected that offer twice, and they pretend that because Smith gave it to them a second time,
00:01:57.960
the exact same offer, that was somehow an insult.
00:02:01.540
In fact, she could have probably given them about an 8% wage increase, and I think that would have been enough.
00:02:06.960
But the ATA, again, is not in the business of actually trying to get to a real deal.
00:02:11.460
They are in the business of trying to hurt Daniel Smith and help Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi.
00:02:17.560
I want to take you guys through some of the messaging the NDP have been doing,
00:02:21.740
as well as what the Alberta government has been doing, because this has been such a stupid situation.
00:02:28.420
I also want to talk about some of the media and commentators talking about this issue,
00:02:32.760
and just how blatantly hacky many of them are being.
00:02:37.020
But before we get into it, I just want to remind you guys, especially if you live in Alberta,
00:02:41.460
make sure to like, subscribe, and share this video.
00:02:45.060
It really helps me out on the algorithm as well.
00:02:47.240
If you comment, if you are already a subscriber, hit that notification bell,
00:02:51.060
and make sure that you stay up to date with my videos.
00:02:53.380
Every time I upload a video, if you hit the notification bell,
00:02:56.680
it will give you a ping so that you know right when I've put something new out.
00:03:01.280
But anyways, let's check out first this advertisement by the Alberta NDP trying to,
00:03:07.820
I don't even know what they're trying to do with this video.
00:03:13.540
Make it look like, you know, they're standing with teachers
00:03:16.220
and against the authoritarian government trying to make them, you know, do their jobs.
00:03:24.540
I have never seen this many people on the grounds of the legislature.
00:03:47.100
They give an extremely generous offer, both on wages,
00:03:49.520
as well as trying to alleviate issues in the classroom.
00:03:52.860
It's almost like they haven't done anything wrong,
00:03:55.980
but Nenshi has absolutely nothing to run on right now
00:03:58.800
because Daniel Smith, on pretty much every front, has been doing a very good job.
00:04:05.060
that's kind of being expected in every government.
00:04:07.980
And their scandals are, in fact, smaller than the previous NDP government scandals,
00:04:12.400
as well as smaller than pretty much every other province's current issues.
00:04:16.020
And, but they're trying to make this seem like,
00:04:21.260
why isn't the UCP, like, I guess, defunding private education
00:04:35.460
We have the lowest, the lowest, the average age of any province,
00:04:40.460
so naturally you're going to have a lot more students.
00:04:44.240
In fact, Alberta, with some of the lowest per capita spending,
00:04:50.360
has the best achievement rates, has the best test scores.
00:04:55.380
And the Alberta government is adding more money to the system.
00:05:07.620
Oh, she engineered this strike by giving a generous offer
00:05:10.820
and Jason Schilling at the ATA, which is a great last name for a man like him.
00:05:14.840
That NDP Schill, Jason Schilling, rejected it twice
00:05:18.520
and then pretended that somehow he had been, like, hard done.
00:05:24.740
These folks, these Albertans and Albertans across the province
00:05:36.080
we stand with students, we stand with workers in their unions,
00:05:39.340
and most important, we stand for public education.
00:05:46.280
What is this for, like, a video about public education?
00:05:52.420
step in from the side of the frame and start gunning people down.
00:06:04.760
Did you understand how the deals the UCP government
00:06:10.880
because if the NDP were to address what was offered,
00:06:13.800
they would look like complete morons right now.
00:06:21.640
So, the Alberta government has now passed Bill 2,
00:06:28.160
and the NDP is acting like somehow this is a...
00:06:37.820
I think Danielle Smith does a good job of defending herself on this one,
00:06:42.020
With the passing of Bill 2, the Back to School Act,
00:06:45.500
Alberta students will return to the classroom on October 29th,
00:06:50.080
and putting the folks back where it belongs on students.
00:06:53.360
Teachers have made it clear that classroom complexity and safety
00:06:56.460
are among the most critical challenges in our education system.
00:07:02.400
hiring 3,000 new teachers and 1,500 education assistants,
00:07:07.860
Aggression and Complexity in School Action Team.
00:07:17.300
and every student can learn in a safe, supportive environment.
00:07:29.620
Albertans stand with teachers, not the government.
00:07:32.240
That's because most people don't know what the issue is
00:07:38.980
They say that they frankly don't get a lot of emails
00:07:44.160
You know, you'll get some form letters from teachers
00:07:57.000
giving 12% salary increases over the next four years,
00:08:00.440
and they were looking for like 17% or whatever,
00:08:05.520
The government is giving an absolutely fine offer.
00:08:10.740
And the polling doesn't actually reflect the fact
00:08:15.000
and that whenever this issue is actually explained to people,
00:08:20.860
that the government is acting in an underhanded way.
00:08:26.380
The teachers have actually had a very difficult time
00:08:30.520
because their own people are deeply incompetent at messaging.
00:08:38.520
to discuss what their next moves were going to be.
00:08:44.940
I think this article from Isaac Lamoureux at Juno News
00:08:57.420
Alberta Teachers Association President Jason Schilling
00:09:03.840
on what would end the province-wide teacher strike.
00:09:12.000
This strike is not about wages, said Schilling.
00:09:14.540
This strike is about the state of public education in Alberta.
00:09:17.460
The government says they don't know what teachers want.
00:09:19.660
Well, yesterday, tens of thousands of Albertans
00:09:21.800
across the province shared once again what teachers want.
00:09:58.160
if you have five or six years of teacher education.
00:10:02.240
This is an extremely fair offer by the government,
00:11:23.380
As Danielle Smith is just waiting for a flight,
00:11:27.940
not in just sitting in the general public's waiting area
00:12:30.640
Seems like she's still got a long day ahead of her.
