00:00:04.300 to 50,000 downloads. What made the difference? You leaving us a five-star review. The more
00:00:10.260 positive reviews, the more the algorithm picks us up, and more people are confronted by the law
00:00:16.360 and gospel of Jesus Christ. Help us press forward the crown rights of King Jesus by leaving us a
00:00:23.480 five-star review on your favorite podcast platform. Thanks. In the same way that Rahab,
00:00:30.280 think of Israel going against their first enemy after crossing the Jordan River, that being
00:00:36.320 Jericho, in the same way that Rahab distinguished her and her own household from the rest of the
00:00:42.920 city of Jericho, now we're seeing that same concept play out at large. So Rahab distinguished
00:00:49.880 herself from the rest of her people, Jericho. Now we see the Gibeonite tribe distinguishing
00:00:56.020 themselves from the rest of the tribes of Canaan. Both actions are done in faith. We should
00:01:02.900 understand this as an act of faith. The faith is, at the very least, Rahab recognizes that at the
00:01:09.860 end of the day, that Israel is going to win the battle because they have the Lord. It's not because 0.62
00:01:17.180 of any practical circumstance, Jericho was a superior. They had the position that was
00:01:23.500 advantageous over Israel. Israel was coming in. They were nomadic. They had been wandering in 0.93
00:01:30.040 the wilderness for 40 years, an entire generation, whereas Jericho was strategically positioned.
00:01:36.400 They had a fortified city. They had walls that stretched the heavens, as we see in the book of
00:01:42.060 Deuteronomy. That's the way it's described. And so Jericho had the upper hand in every practical
00:01:47.780 regard. And yet Rahab recognizes that ultimately the Lord, the God of all gods, lowercase g gods,
00:01:56.320 king of all kings, Yahweh himself is with Israel. And so even though Israel doesn't have some of
00:02:02.260 the physical provisions and weaponry, what they do have that gives them the victory is that they 0.95
00:02:08.760 have Yahweh. And so she recognizes that if she sides with her own people, Jericho, she's going 0.98
00:02:15.440 to lose the battle. And one of the signs that she looks to, that in order to confirm this conclusion,
00:02:22.620 this realization that Israel will emerge victorious in this battle between Israel and Jericho,
00:02:29.280 is that everyone in Jericho, her own people, the Bible says, she says this to the Israelite spies,
00:02:35.920 she says, all their hearts have melted within them like wax, that they are overcome and overwhelmed
00:02:43.240 by fear. She recognizes that this supernatural dread upon all of her people is a sign that the
00:02:52.440 Lord Yahweh is with Israel and not with Jericho, and that Israel will be victorious over Jericho.
00:03:01.340 And so she makes a treaty. 0.75
00:03:04.060 She says to the spies, I know that you are going to inherit the land.
00:03:08.160 No matter what we do, it doesn't matter how tall our walls are.
00:03:12.060 It doesn't matter what provisions we have on deck.
00:03:15.000 At the end of the day, you're going to conquer because Yahweh is with you.
00:03:19.860 So please remember me and my family. 0.75
00:03:23.340 And the spies make a covenant.
00:03:25.780 They make a treaty with Rahab and her household.
00:03:28.400 they say, hang a scarlet thread out of your window, have every member of your household in 0.94
00:03:33.640 your home, in your physical home, as we come to decimate Jericho, and you will be spared. Why? 0.90
00:03:41.680 Because of your faith. She's believing in Yahweh. She's saying that the gods of the Amorites, the 0.91
00:03:47.320 gods of the Canaanites, the god of Jericho, the god of Ai, these are false puny gods, right? It's
00:03:54.200 like the Hulk taking Loki. You say, it's not that he's not a God. He's just a weak God, puny God.
00:04:00.200 And he starts smashing them back and forth. That's what Jesus does with all the false gods of our 0.98
00:04:05.760 world. And that's what we see Yahweh do in the conquest of Israel in the land of Canaan is one 0.98
00:04:11.640 by one, he topples all their gods. And that's the exact same thing that Yahweh did in Egypt with 0.95
00:04:18.300 each of the 10 plagues that we see transpire as God is delivering his people from bondage and 0.95
00:04:24.140 slavery, each of these 10 plagues signify the superior power of Yahweh over each of these false 0.85
00:04:31.360 gods. Whether it be Ra, the sun god, or the god of the Nile river and fertility and all these 0.97
00:04:36.960 different things, we see Yahweh proving time and time again that he is a superior god. And for the 0.83
00:04:43.120 record, I don't believe that Jambres and Janus, who are the henchmen, the two right and left hand
00:04:50.200 henchmen of Pharaoh in Egypt, the magicians who are performing signs and competing with Moses,
00:04:56.480 I don't believe that they were competing by just smoke and mirrors and sleight of hand.
00:05:01.940 I believe that they were using true dark arts, that they were actually performing not just tricks
00:05:07.880 or slight of eye, but they were actually performing real dark magic by a, not divine,
00:05:16.060 but by a supernatural source, namely Satan, the prince of darkness. So they're actually doing
00:05:23.280 real signs. So it's not that one God is real and the others are fake. No, it's that these other
00:05:30.180 deities, lowercase d, they're not actual deities, but lowercase gods, they're actually real and
00:05:36.240 they actually do have some degree, some measure of power. But the point is not that God is real
00:05:42.540 and these other guys over here are fake. It's that God is infinitely superior to all these other
00:05:49.420 false gods. And so that's what we see is God in the book of Exodus and the deliverance of Israel
00:05:55.360 out of Egypt with the 10 plagues. We see God proving his superiority, his infinite superiority
00:06:01.700 over false gods. And we see him doing it again in the book of Joshua as Israel is coming into 0.58
00:06:07.960 the promised land of Canaan and driving out all of these Canaanite tribes that are pagans
00:06:14.100 worshiping, again, false gods. Rahab has faith. She sees this. She picks up on it. She realizes
00:06:22.060 here's a true God. My people, our God is a false God. And I know that Yahweh is a superior God
00:06:30.060 and therefore his people will emerge victorious.
00:06:33.280 And one of the ways that I can tell
00:06:34.860 is not by looking at the physical level, 0.99
00:06:37.680 looking at Israel and their victuals,
00:06:40.060 their supplies and all these kinds of things.
00:06:43.000 And then looking at Jericho and our walls
00:06:45.000 and our armory and our artillery.
00:06:47.860 No, at that level, it looks like we have the upper hand.
00:06:50.960 But the reason I know as a confirmation, 0.97
00:06:53.500 as a sign that Israel will emerge victorious 0.99
00:06:56.520 is because all the men in my city are cowards. 0.99
00:07:00.060 that's how you know. You know because everyone is overcome by what only could be described as 0.98
00:07:08.620 a supernatural sense of dread. Remember when I preached this a few months ago, I said that fear
00:07:14.860 is not only a sin, and it is a sin. We have the utmost sympathy for fear, right? We're not very
00:07:22.560 sympathetic when it comes to other people's pride. When we see pride, we're like, that's nasty,
00:07:27.980 that's bad that's sin how dare you right but when we see someone who has fear well you you poor
00:07:35.920 thing but biblically speaking fear is a sin the bible says be anxious for nothing dot dot dot
00:07:46.180 except for things that are legitimate and you know and if you're a mom you can't help but worry it
00:07:51.040 really just means you love your kids no there's no exception clause it's just be anxious for nothing
00:07:56.320 which means to be anxious for something, is going against God's command. Therefore, sin. But not
00:08:03.240 only is fear sin on biblical terms, but it's also, at times, a sign of God's corporate judgment.
00:08:12.180 When an entire nation, when an entire people are overwhelmed by what only can be described as
00:08:19.140 supernatural fear and an extreme sense of dread. That's one of the signs that not only do you have
00:08:27.160 individual people sinning in regards to choosing to be fearful rather than have faith and believe,
00:08:33.260 but you actually have a corporate judgment, a confirmation of God's corporate judgment over
00:08:39.020 a people. Their hearts have melted like wax. So all that being said, Rahab has faith. She sees
00:08:46.420 the signs. She sees, you know, she's clued in. She realizes something supernatural is going on here.
00:08:54.020 It's not just that our men are a little bit scared. No, they're overcome by dread for no
00:08:59.240 practical reason. At every level, in the practical sense, we have the upper hand, but no, this is
00:09:06.720 supernatural. It's because Israel has Yahweh, and he is the superior God. He will fulfill all of his 0.66
00:09:13.840 promises. And one of those promises is to decimate us and to give his people an inheritance in the 0.99
00:09:21.800 land. And so she makes a treaty. She makes a covenant because of faith. That's what we now 0.93
00:09:28.120 see in our text today. The same principle now applied at a larger level with the tribe of
00:09:33.780 Gibeon. So you have all these tribes in verse one and verse two. What we see right off the bat
00:09:40.900 in our text today is you have all these different tribes in Canaan saying, okay, if we go up against 0.89
00:09:48.020 Israel one at a time, we're going to lose. Our only chance is to have an allegiance, to come 0.78
00:09:55.220 together as one so that we can take out Israel. Because if it's just Jericho, Israel was victorious. 1.00
00:10:01.540 If it's just Ai, right, we've had two battles now so far in the book of Joshua and Israel again is 0.98
00:10:07.180 victorious. Well, maybe it's because Israel is having the luxury of facing each of these tribes, 0.98
00:10:14.780 Canaanite tribes, one at a time. But what if we all went up against Israel together, simultaneously? 0.70
00:10:22.360 Well, then maybe we would have the advantage. And even with this plan, which again makes practical 0.98
00:10:28.020 sense, in the practical sense, it is a reasonable plan. It's a strategic plan. But even with this
00:10:34.600 plan, the tribe of Gibeon says, we'll still lose. Why? Why so much confidence that they'll lose?
00:10:44.040 Well, it displays some level of faith in the God of Israel, in Yahweh. And so what they do is the
00:10:50.560 exact same thing that Rahab did. They go to Israel, they go to Joshua and say, we want terms of peace.
00:10:57.960 we want to form a treaty. Quick, make a covenant with us. Now there's one main difference.
00:11:05.480 The main difference between what Gibeon did and what Rahab did is this. Rahab lied to her people
00:11:11.940 in order to make a treaty with Israel. Whereas the Gibeonites lie to God's people 1.00
00:11:18.880 in order to make a treaty with Israel. 0.99
