00:00:00.000 Hey guys, real quick, before we get started, I have a small request.
00:00:03.360 If you've been blessed by our content and you like this show,
00:00:06.420 would you take just a brief moment and leave us a five-star review?
00:00:09.760 This is quite possibly the most effective thing that you can do
00:00:12.860 to ensure that this content gets out to as many people as possible.
00:00:17.520 Thanks.
00:00:19.700 Jesus said,
00:00:20.800 Man cannot live on bread alone, but from every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
00:00:25.440 You're listening to Daily Truth.
00:00:30.000 Calvin espoused that there are three uses of the law.
00:00:32.200 The first, this is the language I'm going to use.
00:00:33.960 The principle is the same.
00:00:34.900 The language may differ depending who you're asking.
00:00:36.600 Here's the language.
00:00:37.940 Mirror, shield, compass.
00:00:40.160 That's what I'm going to use.
00:00:41.040 Mirror, shield, compass.
00:00:42.380 First use of the law.
00:00:43.240 Three uses of God's law. 0.93
00:00:44.880 The first is mirror. 0.94
00:00:45.800 The law serves as a mirror that the unbeliever looks into and says, 0.85
00:00:50.860 whoa, this is what God demands?
00:00:53.540 Because the law is a reflection of God's nature.
00:00:55.880 So the law says this is who God is.
00:00:57.640 It's not just what God requires, right?
00:01:00.100 It's not an external standard from God.
00:01:02.160 The law is who God is.
00:01:04.460 God's standard.
00:01:05.420 God is not God because he lives up to some universal standard outside of himself.
00:01:09.160 God is the standard.
00:01:10.660 So goodness is not, it's not, there's this universal absolute goodness and God is God
00:01:15.120 because God lives up to goodness by this standard.
00:01:17.660 No, we know goodness in relation to who God is because God is good.
00:01:22.180 So God is the standard.
00:01:23.480 God defines all these things.
00:01:24.760 The law is a reflection of God's nature.
00:01:28.040 And so in the first use of the law, it functions as a mirror that we look at the law.
00:01:31.280 And by looking to the law, we see God by seeing what he requires, the righteousness that he requires.
00:01:37.860 We see how righteous he is.
00:01:39.940 And we get a good look back at ourselves as all mirrors do.
00:01:43.340 So the mirror helps us to see this is who God is.
00:01:46.040 Oh, my goodness.
00:01:46.560 And then I see myself and how far I fall short.
00:01:49.840 And so the law does not save.
00:01:51.740 The law is powerless to save.
00:01:53.160 No one will be justified by works of the law, Romans 5.
00:01:56.540 So the law is powerless to save, but the law is powerful to do what?
00:02:01.500 To reveal your need for salvation, right?
00:02:04.840 No one will appreciate the beauty of Christ unless they first come to see the necessity
00:02:08.960 for Christ.
00:02:10.000 So the law helps us to realize we're dead and we need to be made alive.
00:02:15.180 The law helps us realize we are justly underneath God's righteous condemnation and we require
00:02:20.560 redemption and salvation.
00:02:22.460 So the law is powerless to save.
00:02:24.320 There's only one power of God for salvation. 0.97
00:02:26.760 First for the Jew and then for the Greek. 0.96
00:02:29.020 And what is that?
00:02:29.560 Romans 1 16, the gospel.
00:02:31.800 The gospel is the power of God for salvation.
00:02:33.800 The law is the power of God for revealing our need for salvation.
00:02:37.040 That's the first use of the law.
00:02:38.580 Mirror, skipping the second for a moment.
00:02:40.760 The third use of the law, compass.
00:02:42.760 The law is a lamp unto my feet, says the Psalms.
00:02:46.320 The law is a guide.
00:02:48.480 The law is, it is a tutor.
00:02:50.420 It instructs me in the ways in which I must go. 0.70
00:02:53.740 Now, the third use of the law primarily refers to the law's function for the believer, for the Christian.
00:02:59.680 Now, for the Christian, we need the law. 0.52
00:03:02.860 Why?
00:03:03.980 To be justified?
00:03:04.840 No.
00:03:05.380 Because we have been freely saved by grace.
00:03:07.920 Again, the law is not saving.
00:03:10.120 The law is the alley-oop for the slam dunk of the gospel, which is saving.
00:03:14.880 Right?
00:03:15.240 But you need the law.
00:03:16.220 And so the third use of the law is, as a Christian, I'm not trying to obey God's law out of fear in order to garnish the favor of God.
00:03:24.440 But as a Christian, because I know that I have already received the favor of God as a free gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ,
00:03:32.720 I now want to respond, right, the response church.
00:03:36.640 I'm not trying to initiate God's favor, but I'm responding because I've already freely received God's favor.
00:03:42.000 And this response is a response of gratitude.
00:03:44.440 So I want to be grateful for the free gift of salvation I've received.
00:03:48.580 And so I'm saying, God, you've given me so much.
00:03:50.440 I want to bless you.
00:03:51.400 I want to please you.
00:03:52.240 I want to live a life that is righteous.
00:03:53.960 How can I bless your heart?
00:03:55.260 You've given me so much.
00:03:56.560 How can I please you?
00:03:57.540 And God's response is, obey my law.
00:04:00.400 Obey my law.
00:04:01.940 Well, wait a second.
00:04:02.520 That's legalism, brother.
00:04:03.300 No, anything other than that is antinomianism and a heresy.
00:04:07.100 That's not legalism.
00:04:08.460 What makes it legalism is when you say obedience to the law justifies.
00:04:12.540 And I'm not saying that.
00:04:13.480 but obedience to the law,
00:04:14.980 the law being relevant for all people in all time periods and Christians is
00:04:18.820 just classical Orthodox Christianity.
00:04:21.340 So the law third use of the law, 0.84
00:04:23.240 primarily for Christians not to justify, 0.92
00:04:25.540 but it is a compass.
00:04:26.860 It guides us in which way we should go in order to live lives that are
00:04:29.300 pleasing to God,
00:04:30.000 not to garnish his favor,
00:04:31.560 but as a response of gratitude,
00:04:32.600 because we freely have already received his favor through faith in Christ
00:04:36.020 Jesus.
00:04:36.940 Okay.
00:04:37.300 That's the third use of the law compass,
00:04:39.060 primarily for believers. 0.94
00:04:40.300 First use of the law mirror,
00:04:42.080 revealing the need for Christ, 0.99
00:04:43.000 primarily for unbelievers. So unbelievers first use, believers third use. The second is the middle 0.99
00:04:48.300 believers and unbelievers alike. The second use of the law primarily falls underneath the banner 0.91
00:04:52.480 of God's common grace. Common grace, again, not special grace or saving grace. God's regenerative
00:04:58.280 work, his gift of faith and repentance that God gives to his children, to the elect. That's
00:05:03.200 special grace, saving grace. Common grace is that God, Ecclesiastes, he calls it to reign both on
00:05:08.940 the wicked and the righteous. So in common grace is what I want you to understand. In common grace
00:05:13.700 is there's gifts, mutual gifts for all creatures, all humanity, both believers and unbelievers
00:05:19.800 alike. And there are gifts of provision like rain, which waters the earth and produce crops to eat
00:05:25.000 and to grow. So there's provision underneath God's common grace. There's also protection
00:05:30.300 underneath God's common grace. In the realm of protection under God's common grace for believers
00:05:35.060 and unbelievers alike, what do we have? Second use of the law. What is it? Shield. Mirror, compass,
00:05:42.760 shield. The law functions to hold. It doesn't change hearts at the inward level. Only the
00:05:50.640 power of regeneration can do that. But you know what the law does? It keeps that evil, which is
00:05:56.220 just as present in the unbeliever today as the Nephilim back then, it keeps it on the inside, 1.00
00:06:01.400 in the heart, and it restrains it like a shield so that it doesn't come out, meaning there would 1.00
00:06:06.480 be more murder if there were not laws in a society, in a culture that punish murder, right?
00:06:13.720 There would be more acts. I'm not saying there would be more evil hearts, but I'm saying that
00:06:19.360 evil at the heart level would be more externally manifest through behaviors if we did not have
00:06:26.640 God's common grace functioning as a protection,
00:06:30.140 holding outward manifestations of evil at bay through the second use of the
00:06:35.460 law.
00:06:35.840 So all that being said,
00:06:37.860 what's the difference between the unbeliever in the day of Noah and the
00:06:40.540 unbeliever today at the heart level,
00:06:42.040 no difference at all. 0.96
00:06:43.360 Totally depraved.
00:06:44.160 Every intention, 0.92
00:06:44.880 every thought,
00:06:45.500 evil,
00:06:46.620 continuing only at the outward behavioral level, 0.69
00:06:52.680 900 to 1500 years of discipleship from guys like Cain and Lamech.
00:06:56.640 God breeds a culture and a nation and legislation and justice and laws that,
00:07:04.500 that no, the shield, the second use of the law has been eaten away.
00:07:08.200 There's no restraint.
00:07:10.280 And where there's no restraint and God's common grace,
00:07:14.760 holding evil at bay, people run wild.
00:07:18.360 Murder was praised.
00:07:19.320 It was esteemed.
00:07:20.660 Lamech is boasting.
00:07:21.560 Imagine 900 years later from Lamech, what, what kind of songs they're writing?
00:07:25.460 what kind of evil they're performing. And then God wipes them out. Our nation. The reason why 0.98
00:07:31.360 at the outward level, we are not as evil as them is because our nation was founded on biblical
00:07:36.000 principles. Now I'm aware that chattel slavery was a massive blind spot. So I'm not saying that
00:07:45.300 that was biblical. I'm saying that is a massive example of where our nation was not biblical,
00:07:51.300 where our nation was not consistent.
00:07:55.040 And I'm aware, Thomas Jefferson ripping out verses in the Bible.
00:07:57.720 I'm not saying the founding fathers, that there were no heretics among them,
00:08:00.980 and I'm not condoning slavery.
00:08:03.220 But what I'm saying is, even in our nation today,
00:08:05.460 with 60 million children murdered in the mother's womb in the last 45 years
00:08:09.040 through abortion, even with that level of violence and wickedness, 0.53
00:08:13.020 our nation is still toddlers in doing evil compared to the Nephilim. 0.90
00:08:19.040 but what happens in a society is through compromise and primarily when the church
00:08:26.100 loses its saltiness and says we want to how can we partner all right right i mean maybe we can
00:08:32.000 get behind this movement maybe we can hop behind this agenda maybe we can partner in this way maybe
00:08:38.960 maybe we can partner in that way but little by little by little what happens is the sons of god
00:08:43.420 marry the daughters of men and the daughters of men poison the well it doesn't work the other way
00:08:49.500 the way that the sons of god changes society is by remaining separate and distinct in the world
00:08:54.600 but distinct from the world not of the world but when we blend what happens is as time goes on
00:09:01.180 through legislation through culture through media through all these kinds of things the the shield
00:09:06.600 of god's law that was founded on biblical principles is dissolved and it's eaten away
00:09:11.080 more and more and more and more.
00:09:12.400 And then that total depravity
00:09:13.980 that's always been there at the heart level
00:09:15.780 begins to come out in actions more and more and more. 0.98
00:09:18.560 And then God kills everyone. 0.70
00:09:22.440 Thanks so much for listening. 0.98
00:09:23.620 But real quick, before you go,
00:09:25.560 do us a small favor, take a moment
00:09:27.380 and leave us a five-star review if you enjoyed the show.
00:09:30.800 This is undoubtedly the best way
00:09:33.160 that you can help us get this biblically faithful content
00:09:36.060 to as many people as possible.
00:09:38.200 Thanks so much.
