00:01:30.980 where John Bunyan got this idea. And I believe it is a good allegorical symbolic idea. The Jordan

00:01:37.580 River symbolizes death and the people of God, the church, namely Israel, they don't get to skip it.

00:03:44.760 through the river of death is this. Number one, for you have not passed this way before. That's

00:03:52.180 the end of verse 4. This is a portion of life, the final portion of life, namely death, that none of

00:04:00.660 us have dealt with before. It is appointed to man that he should die once, and then comes the

00:04:07.960 judgment. In other words, brothers and sisters, you do not get to practice death. You do not get

00:04:14.860 a rehearsal for death. Sure, you may suffer in this life and be on your death bed, in a sense,

00:04:23.600 and then recover. But none of us get to truly go all the way to the end and die as a rehearsal

00:04:31.080 to die again. You could argue that maybe a few individuals like Lazarus, but even then it's not

00:04:39.460 a benefit. Yay, Lazarus gets to die twice. There's no need for us to have jealousy in that regard.

00:04:49.460 So this is an untrodden path. It's a trackless path. Israel is going away that no one has gone

00:04:57.840 before. There's not a trail that has been etched into the ground to make the path level or easy

00:05:06.300 or to remove obstacles and stones and roots and weeds.

00:05:10.960 This is not a path that has been traversed many times.

00:05:15.280 This is a path that they will cross but once.

00:06:04.700 but a path nonetheless where we can pass through as Jesus in his righteousness, in his covenant

00:06:17.600 being swallowed up. Rather, the waters of death are swallowed up in his victory.
