In order to be as faithful as the Church, we must be as cheap as possible, and the cheapest way to do so is through the simple and inexpensive means of the Lord's Supper. The Bible teaches that the bread and wine is not special, it's just plain bread and water.

00:00:00.000 All right, listen, guys, I get it.
00:00:01.900 Many of you are unable to financially support this ministry because you're spending your
00:00:05.900 cash and your lives on raising young children in the fear and admonition of the Lord.
00:00:10.740 Praise God for you and that endeavor.
00:00:13.860 However, algorithms are a thing.
00:00:16.380 Shadow banning, sadly, is a thing.
00:00:19.000 And one major way that you can help to expand the reach and effectiveness of this ministry
00:00:24.160 that doesn't cost you a dime is by spending just a few moments leaving us a five-star
00:00:29.980 review. Also, perhaps even more effective than that, you can share our podcast with a friend.
00:00:36.560 We hope you'll take the time to do so. Thank you so much. God bless.
00:00:42.360 Jesus said, man cannot live on bread alone, but from every word that proceeds from the mouth of
00:00:47.420 God. You're listening to Daily Truth. And so too, not just for Old Testament Israel,
00:00:55.740 under the old covenant, according to the flesh,
00:00:59.440 but for New Testament Israel under the new covenant,
00:01:02.480 according to the spirit and the promise,
00:01:04.780 we have been given signs and seals by God
00:01:07.220 for our remembrance.
00:01:09.200 Why? Because he is merciful.
00:01:11.420 Not just an extra heavy burden or commandment,
00:01:14.960 but in his kindness,
00:01:16.640 God has appointed to the New Testament church
00:01:19.280 under the new covenant, signs and seals.
00:01:23.400 And these signs and seals, likewise,
00:01:25.740 are not pompous they're not intricate what i'm saying is that they are simple it's just water
00:01:33.740 it's just bread it's just wine i've had in the past uh well-intended very kind women approach me
00:01:45.320 and say could i make you know for the lord's supper a more delicious bread with with honey
00:01:51.840 and raisins and my answer is i would love for you to make that bread and bring it and let's all take
00:01:59.440 it home and eat it as families for lunch but not for the supper for the lord's supper the bread
00:02:06.600 is meant to be simple bread it's meant to be plain that's exactly what god prescribed to israel
00:02:15.460 with the Passover.
00:02:17.480 With the Passover, it was actually unleavened bread.
00:02:20.820 And there are some who theologically
00:02:22.440 would hold to the position that the New Testament
00:02:25.080 sign of the Lord's Supper,
00:02:27.960 which mirrors the Passover from the Old Testament,
00:02:31.260 that that too should be unleavened bread.
00:02:33.840 There are others on the other side of the aisle,
00:02:36.040 theologically, who argue that under the New Covenant,
00:02:39.000 that we have the leaven,
00:02:41.020 the leaven of the gospel of the kingdom
00:02:43.600 that has now entered the lump, the loaf, and is working through.
00:02:48.180 And so they would say, still simple bread, but the leaven should be there
00:02:50.960 because it is the new covenant in the New Testament.
00:02:54.120 I think that that's a profound argument.
00:02:56.100 So maybe the post-mill view of the supper.
00:02:59.060 But in either case, whether it's unleavened in keeping with Old Testament Israel
00:03:03.520 and the Passover, or leavened, in either case,
00:03:07.940 it's not a bread with honey and raisins, is my point.
00:03:10.920 It's still a very simple bread.
00:03:13.600 Likewise, the wine is a very simple wine.
00:03:17.460 And likewise, in the sacrament of baptism, the water is a very simple water.
00:03:23.240 Protestants have held that it is not holy water, blessed by a priest.
00:03:30.080 It's not magical or mechanical.
00:03:33.560 There's nothing inherent to the water that does anything supernatural.
00:03:40.020 It is just plain water.
00:03:41.940 But the sign of the supernatural miracle that's being represented,
00:03:47.780 now that is absolutely profound.
00:03:51.980 This is what Peter says.
00:03:54.000 And speaking of baptism, he says that baptism now saves you.
00:03:58.700 Not as a removal of dirt from the body,
00:04:03.060 not the water itself giving you some kind of holy supernatural bath,
00:04:10.000 not as dirt being removed from the body the physical act of the water um covering the body
00:04:16.320 being immersed in the water and and cleansing the body of of literal physical dirt that's not what
00:04:22.080 saves you but peter goes on baptism now saves you not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an
00:04:28.600 appeal to god for a clean conscience that is to say insofar as this water covering your body
00:04:37.040 represents an inward insofar as the outward action of water being immersed in water accurately
00:04:45.000 reflects the inward reality of an appeal a plea to god for the cleaning of the conscience
00:04:52.880 insofar as those two things align well then you bet your bottom dollar in that instance baptism
00:04:59.840 saves you. Baptism does save you insofar as it is an outward manifestation, an outward physical
00:05:08.500 visible symbol of an inward reality. The body being washed, but representing the conscience
00:05:17.280 crying out to God, pleading to be cleaned, to be forgiven, for sin to be atoned for. In that sense,
00:05:26.560 baptism saves. But again, the water isn't special. And the Lord's Supper, the bread is not special.
00:05:34.400 The wine is not special. In fact, I assure you, brothers and sisters, in order to be
00:05:40.800 as faithful theologically as possible, Covenant Bible Church buys the cheapest wine we can find.
00:05:47.300 And it's strictly for theological reasons, right? We would love to buy more expensive wine,
00:05:52.100 But it's just we want to be faithful to simple wine in a biblical sense.
00:05:56.360 It's both practical and theological.
00:05:58.680 But the point is the wine is simple.
00:06:00.400 The bread is simple.
00:06:01.260 The water is simple.
00:06:02.500 And so, too, these 12 stones were simple.
00:06:06.100 And that is proper.
00:06:08.020 It's fitting that the sign and seal should fit the miracle, the work that God has performed.
00:06:16.120 point. Joshua, this now being a greater sign. So that's kind of with the supper and baptism,
00:06:25.360 the 12 stones with Old Testament Israel and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper
00:06:30.780 with New Testament Israel, with you and I. But going even beyond that now, looking at a sign
00:06:37.920 and a foretelling of the gospel, even.
00:06:43.340 I've written the following.
00:06:45.000 Joshua was instructed by the Lord to appoint one man
00:06:48.300 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel.
00:06:51.040 Likewise, think of this, brothers and sisters.
00:06:53.780 See the parallel.
00:06:55.440 The greater Joshua, that is, Jesus,
00:06:59.080 after having passed through the agony of his death on the cross.
00:07:03.240 Remember, I've said the past few weeks
00:07:05.220 that the Jordan River was a type of death,
00:07:08.520 passing over death, Joshua being a type of Christ,
00:07:13.280 a deliverer, the true Messiah and Savior.
00:07:16.480 So just as Joshua led Israel through the Jordan
00:07:20.260 that signified death,
00:07:22.160 Christ Jesus passed through the agony of his death
00:07:25.500 on the cross, and he, Joshua, led them
00:07:29.000 and opened up the land of Canaan,
00:07:31.560 but Jesus opened the heavenly Canaan
00:07:33.780 to all of true Israel, according to the Spirit.
00:07:37.900 And beyond that, Joshua, under God's command,
00:07:40.800 appointed 12 men from each of the tribes
00:07:43.820 to set up a monument to these 12 stones. 0.51
00:07:47.200 Well, Jesus, likewise, the greater Joshua,
00:07:49.960 after having passed through his river of death on the cross,
00:07:54.060 he appointed his 12 apostles
00:07:56.160 to construct the eternal memorial of Holy Scripture
00:08:01.360 to ensure that the knowledge of his life, death, and resurrection
00:08:06.240 might be passed on to all future generations.
00:08:10.540 Fight by flight, why leaving godless places is loving godless places.
00:08:16.260 I've had a lot of people tell me recently,
00:08:18.100 Pastor Joel, you're post-millennial.
00:08:21.320 You claim to believe that Jesus is king of every square inch,
00:08:24.960 but apparently you don't think he's king of California
00:08:27.120 because I've heard your personal story that you used to be a pastor there and that you left for
00:08:33.200 the state of Texas. Notice the title, not fight or flight, but fight by flight. Think of the
00:08:41.160 prodigal son. He comes to the end of his rope. He's longing to be fed with the pods given to the pigs
00:08:47.360 and the parable says no one gave him anything. No member of the father's house tracked him down
00:08:55.040 to give him a handout. He was hurting. He had to lie in the bed that he had made for himself
00:09:01.820 by his foolish choices. You know what the next words in that parable are? No one gave him anything 0.98
00:09:07.520 and he came to his senses. He began to repent. There are 10 million professing Christians
00:09:15.200 currently living in the state of California. What if they're fighting but at the same time 0.65
00:09:21.620 while well-intentioned they're also funding what if california could be brought to its knees
00:09:27.900 simply by the faithful not fighting there but leaving there and forcing gavin newsom and other
00:09:35.420 tyrants like him to actually have to take a spoonful of their own medicine the book has
00:09:42.780 been forwarded by douglas wilson it's been endorsed by michael foster it's good to be a man
00:09:48.040 also Meg Basham, The Daily Wire, and Steve Days from The Blaze Network. It's available on Amazon
00:09:55.040 as well as a cheaper copy that can be purchased right from our website, which is
00:10:01.300 rightresponseministries.com. Check it out today. Can I be frank with you for just a second right
00:10:07.140 here at the end? Look, some of you guys, you're financially supporting this ministry, and from
00:10:12.160 the bottom of my heart, I say thank you. I cannot thank you enough. However, some of you, you just
00:10:19.120 you can't afford it. In fact, some of you, you shouldn't afford it. Let's be honest. I mean,
00:10:25.740 we're living in Joe Biden's ridiculous economy. Our nation and our totalitarian political elites 0.98
00:10:33.840 lost their minds over the last three years due to COVID. We have written checks that we simply
00:10:41.340 cannot cash. It doesn't matter if people change the definition of a recession. We are living in
00:10:47.920 a recession right now regardless. Some of you are struggling to afford a carton of eggs at the
00:10:54.800 grocery store. You cannot support financially this ministry at this time, nor should you,
00:11:01.820 but you could still help us tremendously. I am asking you, please, if you're willing to do so,
00:11:07.840 take one minute of your time. Leave us a five-star review on your favorite podcast platform,
00:11:14.880 iTunes, Spotify, whatever that might be. This is the way the system works. We want to be innocent
00:11:21.140 as doves but shrewd as vipers. We need to be strategic. You leave us a five-star review
00:11:27.620 and our podcast shows up for more people. And the Word of God and courageous theology
00:11:34.380 applied in practical ways to every realm of life
00:11:38.200 gets out there.
00:11:39.900 Help us get it out there.
00:11:41.620 Thanks for tuning in.
