00:02:20.700 shekels, rubbing his hands with a look in his eye like no other. A puppet master in

00:02:26.620 a counting house, pulling the strings of kings and nations. He appears in medieval sermons,

00:02:33.340 Shakespearean comedy, Nazi cinema, and internet memes. In January of 2025, a survey of more

00:02:41.540 than 58,000 adults across 103 countries found that 46% of them agreed with most of a list of

00:02:51.120 classic stereotypes about Jews, including the claim that Jews have too much power in the business

00:02:58.440 world. Stereotypes are earned after all, so let's dive into the ways that Jews built their image

00:03:05.320 as greedy bankers. The story begins with the law of Moses. The law of Moses forbade the Israelites

00:03:13.620 to charge interest to one another. Quote, If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by

00:03:20.880 thee, thou shalt not be to him as a usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. End quote.

00:03:28.700 quote. Deuteronomy draws the line more precisely, quote, thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy

00:03:36.280 brother, end quote. It commands, and then adds, quote, unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon

00:03:44.000 usury, but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury, end quote. But Christ went further

00:03:51.420 still, commanding his followers to, quote, lend hoping for nothing again, end quote.

00:03:58.580 The church read that command as a universal prohibition. No Christian could lend money

00:04:04.620 at interest to anyone, brother or stranger. The Second Lateran Council in 1139 condemned

00:04:11.860 the insatiable greed of moneylenders as detestable to God and man. The Third Lateran Council in 1179

00:04:20.140 denied Christian burial to open usurers, and the Council of Vienne in 1311 declared that anyone

00:04:27.680 who stubbornly maintained that usury was no sin should be punished as a heretic.

00:04:34.180 St. Thomas Aquinas supplied the reasoning. To take usury for money lent is unjust in itself,

00:04:40.940 he wrote, because this is to sell what does not exist. This was the turning point. The

00:04:48.680 Pharisaical Jews who rejected Christ lived alongside Christians in medieval Europe

00:04:54.140 under two different laws about lending.

00:04:57.420 At the same time, Jews were excluded in most kingdoms from the craft, guilds,

00:05:03.040 and frequently borrowed from owning land, and shut out of public office.

00:05:08.320 Across much of Europe, they were legally treated as the servants of the royal chamber,

00:05:13.640 which in practice meant they were personal property of the king.

00:05:16.480 Kings discovered that a Jewish lender was the perfect sponge. He could be encouraged to lend

00:05:23.560 and then squeezed by taxation whenever the crown needed money. In England, Aaron of Lincoln became

00:05:30.800 one of the wealthiest men in the realm, and when he died in 1186, the crown seized his entire estate

00:05:37.660 and created a special department of the treasury simply to collect his debts. That is to say,

00:05:43.540 the state often used the Jews as a proxy to lend money in a way that Christians were not allowed to.

00:05:51.620 When Edward I stopped using the local Jews to exploit his other subjects,

00:05:56.760 he banned their lending in 1275, and in 1290 he expelled them from England altogether.

00:06:05.800 It is important to recognise that the Jews did not have total monopoly over the banks in the medieval area.

00:10:23.740 merely an accuser. Around 1120, Pope Calixtus II issued the bull Sicut Judeus, forbidding

00:12:51.980 pre-empting the market. Now, the story was not true. Nathan was not at Waterloo, and the historian

00:12:58.880 Brian Cathcart has shown that he was not even the first man in London to hear the victory.

00:13:04.820 That said, the Rothschild family was able to skyrocket to positions of extreme wealth and power

00:13:10.160 through their other non-Christian practices.

00:13:13.240 This brings us to the theological question at the heart of the stereotype.

00:13:18.080 Did the different religion of the Jews produce a different kind of man,

00:13:25.860 The law of Moses permitted one kind of contract with outsiders.

00:16:11.500 world, and a survey in 2025 suggests the noticing has grown even further.

00:16:16.540 so here is what christians should learn from this history the first point is that greed is a sin of

00:17:20.040 of it may be true, but we cannot cast a blanket judgment upon an entire people. We must condemn
