00:01:49.920 On the 29th of June 2026, six Catholic bishops in the Nordic countries wrote to every priest in their care.
00:01:59.880 Many Catholics in Scandinavia, Finland and Iceland had come to believe that their Freemasons were a special case, and not without reason.

00:06:01.100 Hiram Abif. Scripture briefly mentions a Hiram, a worker in brass sent to King Solomon, but Masonic
00:06:09.680 legend makes him the master builder of the temple, struck down by three craftsmen when he refuses
00:06:16.040 to betray the secrets of a master. The candidate is laid down as if slain and then raised in a
00:06:24.340 drama the lodge presents as allegory, a lesson in fidelity unto death. And how are masons commanded
00:06:31.900 to act? English lodgers advertise their ideals as brotherly love, relief and truth. Tolerance and
00:06:39.340 kindness towards all, charity towards the whole community, and high moral standards in his own
00:06:45.120 life. At his initiation he is charged to let prudence direct him, temperance chasten him,
00:06:53.660 fortitude support him, and justice guide all his actions, and to be a quiet and peaceable subject
00:07:00.880 true to his government. His duty as a citizen, the English Grand Lodge adds, must always prevail
00:07:07.200 over any obligation to a brother, and Masonic charities have long cared for orphans, the sick
00:07:12.380 and the aged. Much of this is seemingly quite admirable, but the Mason is also bound to secrecy,
00:07:20.400 and for more than two centuries each obligation sealed it with gruesome penalties. In one American
00:07:26.580 version printed in the 1820s, the apprentice swore, so help him God, to have his throat cut across,
00:07:34.840 his tongue torn out by the roots should he betray the secrets. Masons called the penalties symbolic
00:07:42.720 and in 1986 the English Grand Lodge removed them from the obligations. For the sake of honesty it's
00:07:50.100 important to understand a popular myth that the hidden core of Freemasonry is the worship of
00:07:55.540 Lucifer. Much of that belief traces back to one man. In the 1880s a French anti-clerical writer
00:08:02.800 named Leo Taxil staged a conversion to Catholicism and poured out sensational books exposing a Masonic
00:08:09.400 cult of devil worship. Many Catholics believed him, and he was even received by Pope Leo XIII.
00:08:16.340 Then, on the 19th of April, 1897, Taxil told an audience in Paris that he had invented the whole
00:08:23.920 affair to mock the credulity of the Church. Even the Luciferian instruction still attributed to
00:08:31.620 American Mason Albert Pike comes from a book of 1894 built on Taxel's inventions. The church's 0.81
00:08:39.280 case never rested on such tales. Her most important document on Freemasonry appeared before Taxel's
