00:00:00.000 All right, listen, guys, I get it.
00:00:01.900 Many of you are unable to financially support this ministry because you're spending your
00:00:05.900 cash and your lives on raising young children in the fear and admonition of the Lord.
00:00:10.740 Praise God for you and that endeavor.
00:00:13.860 However, algorithms are a thing.
00:00:16.380 Shadow banning, sadly, is a thing.
00:00:19.000 And one major way that you can help to expand the reach and effectiveness of this ministry
00:00:24.160 that doesn't cost you a dime is by spending just a few moments leaving us a five-star review.
00:00:31.340 Also, perhaps even more effective than that, you can share our podcast with a friend.
00:00:36.560 We hope you'll take the time to do so.
00:00:38.460 Thank you so much.
00:00:39.720 God bless.
00:00:40.740 All right, welcome back to another episode of Theology Applied.
00:00:43.360 I am your host, Pastor Joel Webin with Right Response Ministries.
00:00:46.600 Now, if you joined us last week, then you know we're right in the middle of an unusual
00:00:51.020 but very important and interesting three-part series exclusively focusing on Eastern Orthodoxy.
00:00:59.680 Part one last week was focusing on three deadly heresies committed by Eastern Orthodoxy.
00:01:07.940 Today, we're focusing on what's the difference between Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism.
00:01:15.700 that's part two what's the difference between eastern orthodoxy and roman catholicism many
00:01:22.680 similarities both very dangerous with certain heresies but there are distinctions nonetheless
00:01:30.260 protestants need to be informed and understand what these distinctions are that's part two
00:01:36.540 that's the episode you're watching right now if you stick with us in this journey next week will
00:01:42.100 be the final and third part of this mini-series where we'll focus on three of the primary reasons
00:01:49.520 that certain protestants just in the last few recent years have switched teams so to speak
00:01:56.880 from protestant reformed doctrine over to eastern orthodoxy so part one last week three deadly
00:02:05.680 heresies committed by eastern orthodoxy this week part two the difference between eo and roman
00:02:13.960 catholicism next week three of the primary reasons why protestants keep keep gravitating towards the
00:02:23.520 catnip of eastern orthodoxy which is important for us to be aware of that'll be next week but
00:02:29.640 today we focus on EO versus Roman Catholicism. Whoa, whoa, whoa. You're going to want to hear
00:02:35.200 this. Our next two conferences are coming up quick. We've got first our fall conference. This
00:02:40.720 is November 11th and 12th. That's a full day Saturday and a holdover for the Lord's day,
00:02:47.140 November 12th. Who's speaking at this conference? Well, we've got Jared Longshore and Chris Wiley
00:02:53.640 and yours truly, Pastor Joel Webben.
00:02:56.140 What's the title?
00:02:57.200 The title is The Household and the War for the Cosmos.
00:03:00.840 Now, I know you're thinking, wait a second,
00:03:02.420 you can't use that title, Joel.
00:03:04.000 That's the title for Chris Wiley's book.
00:03:06.220 Well, I can use it because he's gonna be there speaking
00:03:08.880 and he gave me his permission.
00:03:10.820 We're gonna be talking about the household
00:03:12.840 as the basic building block
00:03:14.760 for pushing back the kingdom of darkness in this world.
00:03:18.600 We're gonna be talking about biblical patriarchy.
00:03:20.680 We're gonna be talking about marriage and parenting.
00:03:23.260 how to keep your kids, how to shape and form them like straight arrows, like sharp arrows
00:03:29.420 that do damage to the kingdom of darkness, training our children in the fear and ammunition
00:03:34.760 of the Lord. A full day on Saturday, November 11th, and then holding Jared Longshore over for
00:03:40.780 the Lord's day, November 12th, to preach at my church, Covenant Bible Church in Central Texas.
00:03:47.260 You can register at the early bird rate, which will not last long, but you can register at the
00:03:52.660 early bird rate today by going to rightresponseconference.com. Again, that's
00:03:58.280 rightresponseconference.com. Now, our second conference is our spring conference. This is
00:04:04.000 Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The title for this conference,
00:04:10.980 Blueprints for Chrysidom 2.0. Blueprints for Chrysidom 2.0. We don't want to revert back
00:04:18.100 to chrysidom 1.0 although it would certainly be a whole lot better than the clown world that we're
00:04:24.160 currently living in but we recognize despite the phenomenal features of a prior chrysidom there
00:04:30.680 were certain bugs that we'd like to see worked out so we're not going back we are pushing forward
00:04:36.540 to chrysidom 2.0 we believe that the blueprints are seven doctrines for ruling the world
00:04:43.880 righteously what are these seven doctrines well it's reformed confessionalism it's covenant
00:04:49.840 theology it's biblical patriarchy it's presuppositionalism and kyperianism and
00:04:56.600 general equity theonomy and hopeful eschatology post-millennialism who's going to be teaching us
00:05:03.380 on these doctrines voldemort he who must not be named pastor douglas wilson himself you also got
00:05:10.880 Mr. Bright Hearth, Mr. King's Hall, Mr. Haunted Cosmos, Pastor Brian Sauve. And we also have
00:05:18.240 Dr. Joseph Boot, and of course, yours truly, Pastor Joel Webin. We'll be doing seven primary
00:05:24.880 lectures, as well as two 90-minute panels with all the speakers together, and we'll likely add
00:05:31.220 a couple more speakers along the way. Again, that's March 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, Friday, Saturday,
00:05:38.480 and sunday it's blueprints for chrysidom 2.0 we've got the early bird rate going right now
00:05:45.860 but it will run out quickly so go to right response conference.com right response conference.com
00:05:53.500 to register today applying god's word to every aspect of life this is theology
00:06:00.240 now kind of moving to the second half wanting to compare and contrast you know eo with roman
00:06:10.200 catholicism everything that you're saying is pretty much the same as rome like the different
00:06:15.240 you know so rome is going to have you know carved images whereas my understanding is eastern
00:06:19.640 orthodoxy is going to say a graven image that's where we draw the line you know but we just we
00:06:23.740 just kiss and worship paintings you know like 2d 2d idolatry we're down you know but but 3d
00:06:29.980 idolatry. Now that's real idolatry. Other than that, introducing works into the equation with
00:06:37.740 faith for salvation, introducing authority of tradition as an equal infallible authority to
00:06:44.700 scripture, denying sola scriptura, in regards to those kinds of things, Eastern Orthodoxy and
00:06:52.040 Roman Catholicism sounds very similar. But could you, one question that I've had that I just,
00:06:57.580 you know i just not super familiar with is rome has a pope what what do the orthodox have
00:07:05.320 what's their what's their pope um well they don't have a pope uh even though the ecumenical patriarch
00:07:11.540 would like to be a pope um and some people are very frustrated and annoyed with him
00:07:16.520 uh politically because he'll sometimes act unilaterally as though he were a pope
00:07:22.160 But really, usually the authority is invested or seen as invested in synodality or conciliarity, which is a fancy word to say the councils.
00:07:32.940 So when the church comes together in these seven ecumenical councils, that's the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking through the church.
00:07:40.980 But when you have these kind of like Anglican convert people into or Episcopalian converts into Eastern Orthodoxy, a lot of Episcopalians will have kind of like a romantic appreciation of the seven ecumenical councils.
00:07:59.100 and so they'll kind of like swallow the seventh ecumenical council uh sometimes in a way uh well
00:08:06.900 actually let me back let me back up they'll they'll enter into eastern orthodoxy and kind of
00:08:11.460 give like a certain grandeur to the seven ecumenical councils that the eastern orthodox
00:08:15.800 church indigenously doesn't really have um they continued to meet in councils and so the council
00:08:24.060 in 1672 is a completely binding council. It wasn't one of the seven ecumenical councils,
00:08:30.980 but it came up later in the 17th century and was accepted by all of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
00:08:37.240 And so therefore it's binding. Just as much as the seven. Say that again. It's just as binding as
00:08:44.400 the seven? Yeah. It couldn't be less than binding because the Eastern Orthodox Church can never
00:08:50.040 fail the eastern orthodox church never died it never you know like when rome fell away
00:08:55.720 it ceased being the church which is another one of the things that the eastern orthodox
00:09:01.540 church affirm if you don't use their calendar you're anathema you're outside the church
00:09:05.680 you know if you don't if you're not under an eastern orthodox bishop then you're not even
00:09:10.580 a christian they'll say uh much less in a church so the councils that an orthodox christian has
00:09:19.320 technically above them from like the 17th century that's still binding because they're still the
00:09:24.200 church and the church never died the church never failed and they're the only church and so it's not
00:09:30.400 like the eastern orthodox church formally affirms that any other group is either a christian or a
00:09:36.220 church now that's one difference with the roman catholics is that they'll sometimes call the
00:09:41.780 eastern orthodox church a church or they'll sometimes call protestants separated brethren
00:09:47.500 or something like that because vatican ii was kind of like a pr repair job in a lot of ways
00:09:54.000 a lot of ways of vatican one which had those very strict statements if you're not under the pope
00:09:58.900 you're you're anathema right um so vatican ii kind of backtracked that and then they used
00:10:04.880 cardinal henry newman and his doctrine of development to kind of like give the theological
00:10:09.660 impetus you know to vatican ii's shifting of their weight uh so to speak uh the shift of
00:10:16.940 gravity but the eastern orthodox church has always thought of themselves as the only church and it
00:10:22.280 just happened to be that the pope of rome used to be a part of the orthodox church and now he's not
00:10:27.800 now he's not he's a pope of nothing um and so that's the that's the canonical side of it but
00:10:35.160 if you get into the ecumenist side of it you'll find them i mean you know there was a recent uh
00:10:41.680 baptizing of the of the child of a gay couple a gay married couple in an orthodox church you know
00:10:50.560 uh so it becomes kind of like anything really happens in these eastern orthodox churches so
00:10:56.740 they have this kind of paper unity um but really if there isn't uh an an objective factual unity
00:11:04.080 because they don't really listen much to some of these councils then you have other people who
00:11:08.980 listen to them a lot and they don't really meet in the middle they just kind of live in a permanent
00:11:14.080 state of cold war so to speak or a permanent state of cold civil war and you have that kind
00:11:20.820 of manifest today between the russian orthodox patriarch and the greek orthodox patriarch
00:11:25.700 they're not in communion right now the russians and the greeks and so which one's the true orthodox
00:11:33.540 church well they haven't figured it out yet right that's similar to rome in the sense that you know
00:11:40.760 at one point within roman catholicism history there were three popes simultaneously it's like
00:11:47.020 well which did we get the right one because with this you know this whole papal succession you know
00:11:51.820 that you know if if we missed it you know then then we've been off on our popes for you know
00:11:57.560 hundreds of years we went with the wrong line so i i think i like what you said earlier just to
00:12:02.400 backtrack a little bit. I think that's one of the primary deceptions is that both with Rome
00:12:06.840 and Eastern Orthodoxy, um, they like to present this united front. Like we have always been the
00:12:14.600 same for 2000 years, no changes whatsoever. And we're completely unified, the streamlined united
00:12:21.660 front on all of our, and, and with paper it's there. Um, but you know, I can speak more to
00:12:28.940 roman catholicism than i can eastern orthodoxy but within roman catholicism i mean it's just you
00:12:33.840 know it it depends what the pope ate last night and how he's feeling when he wakes up in the
00:12:38.280 morning what you know who knows what's going to come out of his mouth uh rampant contradictions
00:12:42.760 and then you go to each individual bishop and down to each different uh individual parish and priest
00:12:47.860 um and yeah you you may be serving the lord's supper to nancy pelosi who kills babies you know
00:12:54.200 by the thousands or, or you might not, you know, and it's just, and so to pretend as those like,
00:12:59.180 well, we have this streamlined position and Protestants, they're the ones that are, you know,
00:13:03.160 3,000 different denominations. And I think Protestants are just more honest in the sense
00:13:07.820 that we're just saying, yeah, we, we, we have different views of doctrine and we have different
00:13:12.500 individual denominations and individual churches. And so do you, you have priests that are baptizing,
00:13:18.220 you know, the, the, the baby of the gay couple and priests that won't baptize the baby. Like
00:13:22.340 that is not the same. You're not on the same page. We just say we're not on the same page.
00:13:30.680 All right, welcome back to another episode of Theology Applied. I am your host, Pastor Joel
00:13:34.820 Webin with Right Response Ministries. Now, if you joined us last week, then you know we're right in
00:13:39.680 the middle of an unusual but very important and interesting three-part series exclusively focusing
00:13:47.580 on Eastern Orthodoxy. Part one last week was focusing on three deadly heresies committed by
00:13:56.340 Eastern Orthodoxy. Today we're focusing on what's the difference between Eastern Orthodoxy and
00:14:04.240 Roman Catholicism. That's part two. What's the difference between Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman
00:14:11.420 catholicism many similarities both very dangerous with certain heresies but there are distinctions
00:14:19.540 nonetheless protestants need to be informed and understand what these distinctions are
00:14:25.540 that's part two that's the episode you're watching right now if you stick with us in this journey
00:14:30.860 next week will be the final and third part of this mini series where we'll focus on three of
00:14:38.040 the primary reasons that certain protestants just in the last few recent years have switched teams
00:14:46.180 so to speak from protestant reformed doctrine over to eastern orthodoxy so part one last week
00:14:54.620 three deadly heresies committed by eastern orthodoxy this week part two the difference
00:15:02.040 between EO and Roman Catholicism.
00:15:05.400 Next week, three of the primary reasons
00:15:08.500 why Protestants keep gravitating
00:15:13.000 towards the catnip of Eastern Orthodoxy,
00:15:16.380 which is important for us to be aware of.
00:15:18.540 That'll be next week,
00:15:19.420 but today we focus on EO versus...
00:15:22.840 Can I be frank with you for just a second
00:15:24.640 right here at the end?
00:15:26.300 Look, some of you guys,
00:15:27.560 you're financially supporting this ministry,
00:15:29.620 and from the bottom of my heart,
00:15:31.180 I say thank you. I cannot thank you enough. However, some of you, you just, you can't afford
00:15:38.220 it. In fact, some of you, you shouldn't afford it. Let's be honest. I mean, we're living in Joe
00:15:44.580 Biden's ridiculous economy. Our nation and our totalitarian political elites lost their minds 0.99
00:15:53.500 over the last three years due to COVID. We have written checks that we simply cannot cash.
00:16:00.300 It doesn't matter if people change the definition of a recession.
00:16:04.620 We are living in a recession right now regardless.
00:16:08.940 Some of you are struggling to afford a carton of eggs at the grocery store.
00:16:13.880 You cannot support financially this ministry at this time, nor should you.
00:16:19.700 But you could still help us tremendously.
00:16:22.540 I am asking you, please, if you're willing to do so, take one minute of your time.
00:16:27.960 Leave us a five-star review on your favorite podcast platform, iTunes, Spotify, whatever that
00:16:34.900 might be. This is the way the system works. We want to be innocent as doves but shrewd as vipers.
00:16:42.140 We need to be strategic. You leave us a five-star review and our podcast shows up for more people.
00:16:49.000 And the Word of God and courageous theology applied in practical ways to every realm of life
00:16:56.140 gets out there. Help us get it out there. Thanks for tuning in.
