The Stone Zone, entertaining and informative on the Red Apple Podcast Network.
00:00:13.660
I was baptized at St. Mary's Church in Norwalk, Connecticut,
00:00:18.360
one of the most beautiful Roman Catholic churches in the northeastern United States.
00:00:23.260
I received my first Holy Communion and my Holy Confirmation at St. Aloysius in New Canaan, Connecticut.
00:00:31.380
I admit that there was a period in which I fell away from the church,
00:00:34.840
but ultimately, during the Russian collusion hoax,
00:00:39.160
when I was unfairly targeted in a political prosecution and subjected to a Soviet-style show trial,
00:00:47.380
I was redeemed in the blood of the cross, and it is why I am with you today.
00:00:54.000
I become increasingly interested, after Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21st, 2025,
00:01:02.260
at the age of 88, in the process that is involved in the selection of a new pope,
00:01:12.980
Now, the process to choose a new pope is called a conclave.
00:01:17.180
After a pope dies or resigns, a group of the highest-ranking non-papal officials within the Catholic Church,
00:01:28.780
Cardinals over the age of 80 are excluded from the process,
00:01:34.040
stemming from a Pope Paul VI edict made in the 1970s.
00:01:41.500
Why would the church exclude its oldest and wisest cardinals?
00:01:48.140
This alone will make it much more difficult for a conservative successor to Francis to be named.
00:01:55.600
Candidly, I believe that Benedict was the last legitimate pope.
00:02:00.440
I think the selection of Francis was a manipulated and political selection.
00:02:06.900
I, for example, strongly disagree with the fact that Pope Francis essentially reached agreement with the Chinese Communist Party
00:02:16.880
that allowed the Chinese communists to decide who the bishops in China would be.
00:02:24.540
When Cardinal Zen, with responsibility for China, objected, he was essentially shunned by the pope.
00:02:32.920
This is just one of many criticisms I have of Francis, who I think was more of a globalist than he was a Catholic.
00:02:42.260
Now, among the current College of Cardinals, 80% of them were chosen by Francis,
00:02:48.180
indicating that significant change in the direction of the church is highly unlikely.
00:02:54.200
These are the electors, and there's a cap of 120 of them, although the number can slightly vary depending on circumstances.
00:03:03.180
They will meet in the Sistine Chapel, the pope's official residence in Vatican City,
00:03:09.100
and they're essentially locked in, hence the term conclave, from the Latin conclave, meaning with a key.
00:03:18.040
It's kind of similar to a sequestered jury during a high-profile case.
00:03:24.220
The idea is to shield them from undue influence and protect the integrity of the process.
00:03:31.920
Anyone who tries to pretend that this isn't inherently political doesn't understand how the real world works.
00:03:39.140
Now, as someone who grew up watching the Reverend Fulton Sheen on WPIX in New York,
00:03:48.340
and who remembers when the Catholic Church was a bulk work of anti-communist communism,
00:03:55.220
today's Catholic Church is, to say the least, disappointing.
00:04:00.120
The Cardinals will cast ballots up to four times a day, two in the morning and two in the afternoon,
00:04:07.960
each writes the name of their chosen candidate on a slip of paper, folds it, and places it in a chalice on the altar.
00:04:17.560
The ballots are counted by three scrutineers, and to win, a candidate needs a two-thirds majority of the votes.
00:04:31.200
the ballots are then burned with a chemical that turns the smoke black,
00:04:36.580
visible from St. Peter's Square to signal that no pope has yet been selected.
00:04:47.140
At that point, the smoke turns white, thanks to the use of a different chemical mix,
00:04:52.980
and the crowd knows that a new pope has been chosen.
00:04:56.560
That is when Habemus Papum, Latin for we have a pope, is shouted from the balcony.
00:05:04.600
The winner is compelled to accept the election, choose his papal name,
00:05:10.120
and prepare himself to lead over one billion Catholics worldwide.
00:05:16.440
The whole thing can take days or could even take weeks,
00:05:20.060
although modern conclaves turn to wrap up much faster, often within a couple of days.
00:05:27.780
One common misunderstanding is that people, including many Catholics,
00:05:32.360
believe the church teaches that the Holy Spirit directly chooses the next pope.
00:05:39.600
While we pray that the cardinals are guarded by the Holy Spirit,
00:05:43.480
there is jockeying over who will be the next pope.
00:05:46.760
While it may be inappropriate to jockey the election of the next pope
00:05:51.560
as both a baptized Catholic and a political strategist,
00:05:55.520
I feel an obligation to give you the names and the handicapping of those
00:06:05.180
Cardinal Pietro Perrin, as the Vatican's Secretary of State,
00:06:13.000
Perrin might be the current front-runner for the position.
00:06:16.760
He is considered a moderate with extensive diplomatic experience.
00:06:21.760
His selection would be viewed as a continuation of Pope Francis's pro-globalist policies.
00:06:29.800
Through some controversial dealings, like the Vatican's agreement with China,
00:06:37.260
Then there is Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle from the Philippines,
00:06:44.900
Tegel is a progressive figure aligned with Francis's pastoral approach.
00:06:51.280
My sources tell me that he would be the worst choice for the church
00:06:54.780
and could be further to the left of the past pope, Francis.
00:06:59.760
At 67, he could be there for a very long time if chosen.
00:07:11.300
He is currently and was a great favorite of Pope Francis.
00:07:18.060
Zuppi is the president of the Italian Episcopal Conference
00:07:21.540
and a moderate to liberal known for his social justice advocacy.
00:07:26.660
His work as a peace envoy and his ties to the St. Erdogan community bolster his profile
00:07:34.820
among those who are seeking continuity with the Francis legacy.
00:07:41.220
Cardinal Fridolin Mbongo Besungo, he is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 65 years old.
00:07:55.360
Mbongo has gained attention for opposing Cardinal Francis's liberal stances,
00:08:05.080
His leadership in the African church makes him a potential candidate
00:08:08.820
for those favoring a traditionalist shift in the selection of a new pope.
00:08:13.740
Then there is Cardinal Wim Egyk of the Netherlands, a former doctor and staunch conservative.
00:08:22.220
Egyk is known for opposing Francis's views on marriage and divorce.
00:08:28.460
His traditionalist stance could appeal to cardinals seeking a counterbalance
00:08:33.500
to the recent reforms promulgated by Pope Francis.
00:08:38.840
Cardinal Raymond Burke of the United States, 76, is an outspoken American traditionalist.
00:08:47.180
Burke has clashed with Francis over issues like marriage, the Eucharist, and same-sex marriage.
00:08:54.140
He's a long shot, represents a vocal conservative faction.
00:08:59.760
My sources think Burke would launch a major set of reforms to strengthen the church,
00:09:04.740
particularly among younger Catholics, who are overwhelmingly conservative.
00:09:09.920
And he has many support among the younger Catholics that I'm friendly with.
00:09:25.040
Erdo is respected for his adherence to church doctrine and his low-profile approach.
00:09:31.060
He's been mentioned in past conclaves, and he could attract moderate and conservative voters.
00:09:37.960
I guess he would be my first choice if I had to vote, but of course, I don't.
00:09:43.800
Then, of course, there is Cardinal Mario Creech.
00:09:53.800
crutches a Francis appointee with a progressive bent,
00:10:01.540
He's a less prominent, but I would say plausible contender.
00:10:06.340
Now, if I had my druthers, I guess my real first choice would be Cardinal Robert Serra.
00:10:16.780
He is a staunch conservative, defender of the faith and the church,
00:10:25.840
No man, in my opinion, is more suited for the monumental job than Cardinal Sara.
00:10:32.920
With his dark complexion and his articulation of traditional teachings of the Catholic Church,
00:10:39.100
his eminence would be very much a pontiff in the same vein as, say,
00:10:43.800
Justice Clarence Thomas is to the U.S. Supreme Court.
00:10:56.960
Cardinal Pizzaballa is an Italian Catholic prelate who has served as the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem
00:11:07.420
Cardinal Pizzaballa's work and message reflects his commitment to peace, unity,
00:11:12.480
and well-being of the Christian community in the Holy Land.
00:11:17.140
I stress once again, many consider him a long shot.
00:11:21.280
Now, remember, 80% of those voting were selected by Pope Francis
00:11:27.440
so that the selection of a more traditionalist or conservative pope
00:11:31.540
who is a staunch anti-communist in the mold of Pope John Paul II may require a miracle.
00:11:41.540
So I suggest that if you are a Catholic or if you're just someone who cares,
00:11:48.900
With a papal conclave convening as soon as next week,
00:11:58.080
May the Holy Spirit guide and influence this election process.
00:12:04.300
that they may be open to his guidance and choice of a new pope
00:12:11.580
I would also say may God grant the Cardinals wisdom, discernment,
00:12:18.640
so they may choose a leader who is truly after his heart.
00:12:23.660
May God raise up a shepherd who will be faithful, compassionate, and unified.
00:12:32.440
Now, despite the handicapping, despite the politics,
00:12:36.540
despite the fact that Pope Francis essentially selected 80% of those
00:12:49.840
we believe that nothing is impossible for the Lord,
00:12:53.860
and in the end, he will decide who the next pope is.
00:12:58.240
If he needed any advice, well, I hope he listens to this show.
00:13:02.360
Actually, I think he listens to all of our prayers,
00:13:08.360
I think the Catholic Church needs to return to be a bulk work
00:13:17.280
and a beacon for freedom and respect for the Lord.
00:13:24.560
and I'm glad if you had an opportunity to tune in to my handicapping.

00:14:49.100
Trump's deportations have come under undue scrutiny
00:14:52.440

he accused of being gang members without due process.
