00:02:01.120 Why does everyone hate Ron Paul?

00:02:03.400 Well, there are a couple reasons.

00:02:04.260 In fact, I personally discovered this way back in 2007 when I covered Ron Paul.

00:02:10.560 He was running for president that year.

00:02:12.960 I'd actually voted for him 19 years before in 1988 in college for president.

00:02:17.420 I knew nothing about him, but it seemed like an amusing protest vote.

00:02:20.740 He was running as a libertarian then.

00:02:22.640 But fast forward to 2007.

00:02:24.700 He was running in the 2008 presidential campaign.

00:02:27.840 And I thought, this guy looks kind of interesting.

00:02:29.660 I really didn't know much about him.

00:02:31.140 So I went on the road with him for a week.

00:02:33.700 And I wrote a long profile for the New Republic magazine.

00:02:36.880 I was working in television, but I thought it was kind of interesting to write magazine stories again.

00:02:40.500 So I did.

00:02:42.020 And I learned a couple of things about Ron Paul.

00:02:44.720 One, as noted, enormously nice person.

00:02:48.380 Gentle temperament.

00:02:50.120 Decent.

00:02:50.760 Not flashy.

00:02:51.720 Not greedy.

00:02:52.500 Not dishonest.

00:02:54.300 Two, I learned that Ron Paul is very sincere about monetary policy.

00:02:59.820 Paul would give these stem winders about fiat currency and the gold standard and why the Fed was a scam.

00:03:09.500 And he drew enormous crowds, at least relative to the topic.

00:03:13.280 Now, at the time, again, this was 19 years ago.

00:03:16.060 No one was talking about the gold standard in public and getting anything but laughter and jeers.

00:03:24.020 You were a moron.

00:03:26.560 Gold wasn't even a topic.

00:03:28.600 If you could check the transcripts from CNBC for the year 2007, gold probably not even mentioned.

00:03:37.480 It seemed crazy to care about monetary policy then.

00:03:42.100 But Ron Paul did and his audiences responded.

00:03:47.080 That was the first thing I noticed.

00:03:48.420 I had no idea this was a resonant issue.

00:03:50.920 I knew nothing about it.

00:03:51.880 So I assumed, since I lived in Washington and was pretty well informed, that no one else did anything about it either.

00:03:59.060 Tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, in the end, millions of Americans were thinking about the stability and the strength of the U.S. dollar.

00:04:07.920 And they were convinced that excessive money printing since the early 1970s, when the dollar was detached from gold, which is to say from reality, when it became a purely fiat currency, redeemable for nothing, they were convinced that the U.S. dollar was weaker than their leaders said it was.

00:04:27.360 And they knew this because the price of goods they bought every week seemed to be going up over time and no one was mentioning it.

00:04:37.200 Or the goods themselves were becoming smaller.

00:04:40.100 There was shrinkage.

00:04:41.380 This is a well-known phenomenon now.

00:04:43.580 Back in 2007, people were talking about it quite as much.

00:04:47.340 If you were 37 in 2007, when you were in first grade in this country, a Snickers bar cost 20 cents.

00:05:00.580 By 2007, it cost nearly a dollar, and it was smaller.

00:05:04.980 In that and countless other ways, it was obvious that actually this currency wasn't worth what they told us it was, and it was becoming worth less.

00:05:14.500 And only Ron Paul was talking about that.

00:05:19.020 And he was making a number of other points, too.

00:05:21.580 One was that the United States wasn't actually deriving any benefit from all of these foreign wars.

00:05:27.780 That it just wasn't helping us at all.

00:05:30.480 And that in the end, maybe violence isn't the solution.

00:05:34.520 He wasn't making hostile points.

00:05:36.120 He certainly wasn't attacking anyone.

00:05:37.900 He was merely saying, this foreign policy, the foreign policy that led us into, say, the Iraq War, and into Syria, and into Libya, and into Vietnam, for that matter, isn't helping our country.

00:05:51.260 It's incredibly wasteful of money and human lives, and it doesn't bring the result they claim it does.

00:05:57.420 And that's basically all Ron Paul said.

00:05:59.320 He mostly wanted to talk about monetary policy and goals.

00:06:01.980 But for the crime of saying what he said about foreign policy, he was truly hated.

00:06:09.180 And the word went out, time to discredit Ron Paul.

00:06:12.000 Well, I had no idea any of this was going on until I filed my story to the New Republic at the end of 2007.

00:06:18.520 And it was kind of skeptical, but amused and affectionate.

00:06:22.280 I liked Ron Paul.

00:06:23.320 Who wouldn't like Ron Paul?

00:06:25.960 I didn't understand some of what he was saying.

00:06:28.980 I didn't agree with other parts of it, but it wasn't hostile.

00:06:32.160 It was kind of detached and amused and sometimes bemused.

00:06:36.380 So I file it, and the editor says, oh, I like the story.

00:06:40.760 Then two days later, I got a call from that very same editor at the New Republic who said, we have a problem.

00:06:47.760 Ron Paul, it turns out, is a racist and an anti-Semite.

00:06:53.460 And I said, really, I'm not working for Ron Paul.

00:06:57.340 I've got no emotional attachment to the campaign, but he didn't seem like a bigot to me.

00:07:01.800 He seemed like a nice Christian man.

00:07:03.840 Oh, no, the editor said.

00:07:05.980 We sent out a reporter called Jamie Kerchick, a recent Yale graduate and a fervid neoconservative to go check into Ron Paul's background.

00:07:14.520 And it turns out that he had newsletters back in the 1980s that used racist terms.

00:07:21.340 And we think he's an anti-Semite based on his foreign policy.

00:07:25.480 I said, OK.

00:07:26.940 And so then the author of that piece, Jamie Kerchick, called me and kind of grilled me.

00:07:30.320 You spend time with this man, this bigot?

00:07:33.360 Said Jamie Kerchick?

00:07:36.060 Occupying the moral high ground immediately?

00:07:38.420 I said, I've got nothing to do with that.

00:07:40.100 I didn't hear Ron Paul say anything about it.

00:07:43.440 And they tried to kill my piece, but I pushed hard and it ran at the very end of 2007.

00:07:50.260 Not that anyone cares.

00:07:51.280 It's the New Republic and has a readership of like 1,900 people.

00:07:53.860 But I cared since I wrote the piece.

00:07:55.860 And then the very next issue, the first issue of 2008,

00:07:59.080 had a cover story by Jamie Kerchick on how you may have reached the wrong conclusion

00:08:04.940 about Ron Paul in the last issue.

00:08:07.120 Actually, the guy's a racist, an anti-Semite, probably.

00:08:12.040 Can't prove it, but of course he is.

00:08:14.820 White Christian guy, right winger.

00:08:17.760 The piece was actually called Angry White Man,

00:08:20.660 written about the least angry white man this country's ever produced.

00:08:25.440 People have called Ron Paul many things, and some of them may be true.

00:08:28.040 Angry, they've never called him, because he's definitely not angry, as you're about to see.

00:08:32.900 But they went out of their way, and by they, I mean organized neoconservatives,

00:08:38.000 to smear Ron Paul, not simply as wrong on the issues, in fact, not as wrong on the issues.

00:08:43.380 They didn't bother to engage on the issue, philosophically or practically,

00:08:47.720 but wrong as a person, unacceptable.

00:08:50.600 You are not allowed to like Ron Paul, because he's bad.

00:08:54.240 He's Nazi adjacent.

00:09:03.100 By the time Ron Paul, totally undeterred, by the way,

00:09:11.100 not because the Ron Paul movement had become huge or inevitable,

00:09:16.360 but because his decency itself was his calling card.

00:09:23.560 no matter what they said about him, and his ideas made a kind of inherent sense.

00:09:29.840 And that was a massive threat to the members of our media and commentariat

00:09:34.200 who'd like to use your tax dollars to fight wars on behalf of Israel.

00:09:39.120 And so the reaction to Ron Paul in that campaign was how to put it over the top.

00:09:45.300 For example, here was a young Ben Shapiro live-tweeting a Republican debate that year

00:10:16.160 Accusing someone of wanting to murder,

00:10:22.380 That's a pretty serious thing to say about a person.
