00:00:00.000 uh and then it just keeps linking and linking and linking to organized crime
00:00:05.120 all the way back to cartels in mexico through ryan wedding think about that
00:00:10.880 the fbi in the writing ryan wedding case is linked to this investigation
00:00:21.520 this week on tpl media's weekly crime show we begin with the story that would actually be a
00:00:26.560 a good scene in the wolf of wall street mike this is unbelievable what we're about to tell you yeah
00:00:31.140 the stories actually that we have lined up today in the crime week show are all pretty stellar but
00:00:37.320 this one uh it's we're out of the gate that's for sure here we go i'm gonna read the actual
00:00:42.300 headline from the cbc news the elusive former head of manitoba's lone law school who had been
00:00:48.740 in the wind since being disbarred two and a half years ago racked up millions of dollars in debt
00:00:54.580 in switzerland before he was recently picked up by police in france this is like the scene with
00:00:59.700 the yacht in the in the french riviera with jordan belfort he really did go out there and live it up
00:01:05.060 didn't he and not only that now he's been charged with uh the misappropriation of 660 000 of the
00:01:11.780 university's money well that's just the tip of the iceberg jonathan black branch owes the equivalent
00:01:17.400 of 5.6 million to swiss banks in municipal taxes taxes mortgage payments and an art galley or among
00:01:24.880 other parties according to the public swiss government this is for someone who is the
00:01:29.920 former dean of the law school the university of manitoba this is basically like a case he would
00:01:35.260 teach students how far in did he get before he thought i gotta get out of here well that's a
00:01:40.780 great question like i'm sure at one point he thought i'm you know i'm everything's okay i i
00:01:45.500 can manage this but then you cross a line and then you're into yeah like serious criminal activity
00:01:51.740 no it's it's a water slide i think at some point where you just get to the bottom and that's it
00:01:57.900 and and as a law dean he would know like the deeper he gets into it the ramifications
00:02:03.660 and the legal ramifications of everything he's doing and and the penalties potential penalties
00:02:09.580 he could face i wonder what will happen with this case it sounds to me like it's fraud so it's
00:02:14.460 criminal yeah uh you know he's fortunately for him i think he's in a place in the world where if
00:02:19.700 you go to jail it's probably three squares a day and maybe not too bad in the white collar crime
00:02:25.000 area croissant or no croissant i don't care how many macarons they give you in jail over that
00:02:29.560 part of the world you're still in jail that's a good point right macaron or no mac
00:02:33.980 well done jim uh well more on that case as it uh unfolds but uh he was uh just barred in
00:02:42.940 manitoba 2024 and he struck off in england and wales in 2025 um so having said that he's really
00:02:53.220 i think that what happened was he did something that led to the next thing that led to the next
00:03:00.140 thing once you are under water in a crime or you've done something that is fraudulent and you
00:03:06.220 have no other means of getting revenue you might just go deeper down that pathway enjoying the
00:03:11.360 conversation on tpl well sign up for our free news update and get a tailored email with the

00:03:21.360 visit tplmedia.ca and sign up today and as you look at the different layers of this crime you
00:03:28.740 wonder what happened in his life that started him down this path because here's a guy in his 60s
00:03:36.060 yeah the dean of the law school you start like his resume was like wow what a prominent canadian
00:03:43.340 then something happened and everything unraveled not just a little bit to the point that we're
00:03:48.220 we're talking about this case already in my life i'm at an age where i'm like i want to make sure
00:03:52.780 the garbage is out the night before there could be a fine associate wait it's a recycle organized
00:03:56.700 yeah like i you know this to some degree i have to say i do like his energy you know for that age
00:04:04.220 i think it was just misplaced and he could have been doing something more positive with it
00:04:08.380 real quick though i want to just say even someone like him who's a former law dean at the university
00:04:14.300 of manitoba like they always think they can get away with it like their story every time we do
00:04:19.500 these crime story there's one of these where they you know they thought they could get away with it
00:04:24.060 and you know they get caught you know what jim i think to that end though a lot of people get away
00:04:29.660 with a lot of crimes and i think it just makes other people think oh i can do it i'm a law dean
00:04:34.460 i know everything look i know you and i let's not get into crime we'll mess it up within three hours
00:04:39.660 uh sadly four homicides in one hour uh in one single day on uh monday different in different
00:04:46.940 locations yeah that is you know this was not a single shooting scenario a shooting spree this
00:04:53.260 was a spree of shootings and there's a big difference like you say there was several
00:04:57.900 communities involved in this uh and uh probably uh probably one of the most notable points of this
00:05:05.900 fall will be that we kicked it off with four murders in a single day and mike just before
00:05:11.900 this day this faithful day about six seven days before peel regional police did one of their
00:05:17.820 media conferences after a big bust with all these illegal guns yeah and there were people from around
00:05:23.900 the greater toronto area and they were high capacity magazines hundreds and hundreds of rounds
00:05:29.660 illegal guns and this is where the the big scourge for all levels of government in this country
00:05:35.380 yes the crime and the murder is horrible but it's the people smuggling in these guns the ammo and
00:05:42.300 the weapon that no canadians allowed to have when they get caught they have to do serious time oh
00:05:48.620 yeah because that that's basically tools of death just flowing into the country no i would agree
00:05:53.480 with you right at that point uh those people need to be put away for a lifetime uh assuming the
00:05:58.440 murders and lives of many other people uh from that distribution point onward this was the one
00:06:04.740 part of uh monday that got me two men found shot dead in burning vehicles 90 minutes apart at
00:06:11.660 opposite ends of the city right it's just that's we are like wait a sec this is not a police show
00:06:20.800 this is not netflix this is real life so whatever happened they not only shot but burned in the
00:06:27.480 vehicle yeah so they had to use twice right they had to use the dna and all that kind of
00:06:32.940 you know dental records to identify them yeah not only that but think about what happened here
00:06:39.020 one and a half hours apart identical murders exactly so i mean message sending i mean if
00:06:47.880 this isn't organized crime. I don't know what it is. It just seems way too orchestrated. And it
00:06:53.740 sounds like, by the way, it's a show. Both of those are a show. You know, there's a lot of
00:06:58.700 ways to kill somebody and get away. Exactly. This was really an executed show. And Mike, 0.85
00:07:06.060 recently we did a show that had a lot of response and comments about the Bishnoi gang and their
00:07:11.140 letter to police and you know we like to think that in 2026 heading to 2027 you know we're so
00:07:18.200 sophisticated and evolved in canada unfortunately gangs gang reprisals gang life gang crimes gang
00:07:25.540 murders are still very much a part of society in this country uh more prevalent frankly jim than
00:07:31.100 ever what i'm noticing here is we see a lot of uh organized crime revolve around
00:07:36.760 crimes that don't get to murder you know we see a lot of extortion shootings at homes that could
00:07:43.320 lead to murder yes but their intention is you know fear do this or else yeah fear extortion yeah
00:07:49.100 yeah these were vicious vicious executions uh anyway no immediate ties to organized crime
00:07:59.900 made yet by police but still one notable day of sadness in toronto now speaking of sadness
00:08:07.480 one of the saddest things we've seen in recent memory in canadian courts where the victim impact
00:08:13.040 statements in the kenneth law sentencing hearing in the new market courthouse new market about
00:08:18.540 35 40 minutes north of toronto and that's the courthouse that's adjudicating his sentencing so
00:08:23.800 there'll be another sentencing um hearing with more victim impact statements in november
00:08:29.400 the actual prison sentence for kenneth's law will come down in 2027 but it is gut-wrenching to hear
00:08:36.640 the families of the victims talk about their missing and dead loved ones and the impact that
00:08:42.680 all those deaths had on their lives to this day it is oh it is hard to listen to uh on the flip
00:08:51.000 side of that if there is one uh a full court press on sentencing uh looking like 50 years to life
00:08:57.200 uh 25 years parole on uh like yeah yeah 25 years without parole yeah yeah um but you know but i
00:09:05.220 thought about this mike um it's you're the family and it's your daughter your your mom your wife
00:09:12.760 all i'm saying mike is no sentence is good enough and there's so many of these victims there's so
00:09:19.760 many enough that they had to have two separate dates for the impact statements here's one of
00:09:24.620 the things that i think about in these scenarios this person will go away it is isolated not
00:09:29.320 everybody there there's no there's jim we can't put out a sentence on these kind of crimes and say
00:09:35.700 if you do this because you don't do this no nobody of the right mind does this to be involved
00:09:43.200 in this kind of scenario is so tragic but it's definitely the work of a very isolated
00:09:50.000 mad person I covered a court case years ago involving an NHL player and it was a victim
00:09:58.680 impact statement and there was a plea deal and the player involved gave a statement to the judge
00:10:06.020 in Atlanta Georgia and apologized to the family when you're there as a reporter covering that
00:10:11.800 kind of scene. It is brutal. It's brutal on everyone involved, on the jury, on the district
00:10:17.780 attorney there, or crown attorney in Canada, and on the judge. And even the judge was moved by the
00:10:23.720 words he's hearing. So now that they have to reconvene in November for round two of more
00:10:29.520 victim impact statements, and I can't even imagine how gut-wrenching they're going to be, Mike.
00:10:34.480 I just don't, it's horrible.
00:10:37.280 Saskatoon.
00:10:38.420 This was, I guess, a real lucky moment for policing in Saskatoon.
00:10:44.640 Standard seatbelt check pulled two major criminals into custody.
00:10:51.520 On September 24th, a routine seatbelt stop in Saskatoon
00:10:54.900 led to the arrest of two Canada-wide fugitives.
00:10:57.860 Wow.
00:10:58.080 Daniel Robideau, and he was wanted for first-degree murder
00:11:01.540 in a 2022 quebec biker shooting wow and frederick silva wanted for conspiracy to commit murder in
00:11:08.540 a 2024 montreal extortion plot police say both are linked to hell's angels but this is where
00:11:15.220 this is policing at its finest we're about to get to another police story where it's the dark side
00:11:20.840 of policing but this is the rank and file the constables the men and women working the shifts
00:11:26.480 in all kinds of weather performing safety checks and seatbelt checks and sometimes they come up
00:11:32.940 with big scores like this and i applaud the officer involved in the saskatoon police
00:11:37.380 that this is big yeah uh i think that this was and that it's handled so quickly uh that is the
00:11:43.580 connectivity and the technology involved right uh with the computers involved and everything and
00:11:48.560 yeah yeah now these are canada-wide warrants uh so you know it didn't show up in the license it
00:11:53.600 showed up on their identity imagine these two guys sitting in the car and the cop is running
00:11:58.560 their ids and they just know oh well it's up there's nothing we can do it real quick that is
00:12:05.180 a change in policing is that they and i have been fortunate enough to get to know a few police
00:12:10.440 officers in different parts of canada the sophistication of the computer in the cruiser
00:12:15.160 in their vehicle and what they can look up and what they can like in within seconds and what
00:12:21.680 pops up on their screen before it was like you know the old movies when i got this well you know
00:12:26.480 if you think about it jim they've had this technology a long time and they just continued
00:12:29.540 to update it but it's exactly so effective it's so and so efficient and they can run identity by
00:12:34.100 face and things like that uh so there you go uh saskatoon a good haul on that one uh now uh let's
00:12:41.360 dive deep a little bit if you don't mind jim project south has been unsealed uh of course
00:12:46.380 the Superior Court Justice Laura Byrd released 274 pages of the search warrant filing behind
00:12:53.420 February's arrest of eight current and former Toronto police officers. I just want to say this
00:12:58.720 there's well over 5,400 officers that work in the Toronto Police Service right it's a it's a big
00:13:06.760 police force that do a tough job the vast majority you know do their best every day we're talking
00:13:14.540 about less than half or one percent of the police force but the magnitude and the testimony and the
00:13:22.460 freedom of information and the reporting of this has shocked people coast to coast the nature of
00:13:27.660 the corruption of the officers who are alleged to have done this and then it just keeps linking
00:13:32.620 and linking and linking to organized crime all the way back to cartels in mexico through ryan wedding
00:13:40.040 Think about that. The FBI in the writing Ryan Wedding case is linked to this investigation.
00:13:47.160 And the reason that they found out about it is because they were looking into a possible threat scenario and uncovered a murder plot.
00:13:55.900 It involves jail guards, local prisons, officers, investigators, current police officers, civilians.
00:14:04.140 this is unbelievable and for Myron Denku the chief of the Toronto Police Service and the
00:14:10.780 senior officers involved in Toronto Police this is this is something they would they would love
00:14:16.140 to just go away but you you know what the old saying is the buck stops here like you're the
00:14:21.620 captain of the ship so they will have to bear some responsibility for all this happening on their
00:14:27.960 watch and it will be fascinating to find out after the municipal election and we assume Olivia Chow
00:14:33.180 will be re-elected as mayor of Toronto.
00:14:35.240 And as this investigation unfolds,
00:14:38.180 we know what will probably happen
00:14:39.800 to a lot of the officers involved
00:14:41.240 as it goes through the court system.
00:14:42.800 How many senior officers
00:14:44.240 will quietly resign out of all of this?
00:14:47.320 I'm kind of curious.
00:14:48.140 I would love to see Olivia Chow 1.00
00:14:50.460 react to this before the election. 0.99
00:14:53.280 Every day, Canadians see the headlines.
00:14:55.660 At TPL Media, we take those stories further.
00:14:58.200 We're a Canadian podcast network
00:14:59.940 with new shows and fresh content every day.
00:15:02.300 digging deeper into the issues shaping the country visit tplmedia.ca enjoying canada's honest
00:15:08.060 conversation this has been quiet during the election 100 i i would like to see her take 0.89
00:15:16.060 ownership of um a department that she hands money to uh to and they always get a budget increase 0.65
00:15:23.580 every year and she is responsible she is the mayor of the city this is under her watch and i would
00:15:28.460 like to see and this is not a shot at olivia no no but i would like to see her take a moment and
00:15:33.700 say okay hey now before we get into the election i want everybody to understand where we're at with
00:15:38.960 this i want you to know how it got to this place yeah like a state of the union about the
00:15:43.860 investigation and i think it is that big it should matter that much to uh the election this this uh
00:15:49.080 upcoming election in toronto i hope that she does make some sort of statement about it and mike 0.96
00:15:55.120 because she can't just get elected and then fire everybody that right she was managing or she had
00:16:00.800 a beef with right right so i'm thinking as police chiefs from coast to coast on the major cities
00:16:07.540 there has to be i wonder if they've asked their siu slash internal affairs slash internal
00:16:14.380 investigators maybe we should take a look at some of this do you think that could i mean you would
00:16:19.540 be naive if i'm in vancouver montreal edmonton winnipeg the big city is like do you think that
00:16:25.220 could happen in our police force and i wonder if quietly mike because of the magnitude of it
00:16:30.540 and as the stories unfold the different layers to this looking at quietly just real quietly
00:16:36.900 checking to make sure everything's on the up and up with everyone involved there is no doubt in my
00:16:41.520 mind that that is a happening at every major city police force coast to coast you'd have to think
00:16:48.400 that mike because if you're talking about ryan wedding and the money involved and the the cartels
00:16:54.580 also the police forces have been speaking to each other about this case right they're referencing
00:16:59.080 each other toronto you're appealed a different major police forces in southern ontario so you
00:17:04.480 have to wonder like oh wait a second are we sure we're cool like they i'm like the the chief calling
00:17:11.540 in the senior officers and hey we need to do something let's just make sure we're okay because
00:17:16.620 i mean that's just due diligence at its basic level i think it's a really really interesting
00:17:21.400 point you're making jim that uh police forces across the country now must be on full alert
00:17:25.900 about themselves uh and once again we saw the result of first responders just a couple of
00:17:33.680 stories ago doing great work doing amazing work this is not about that group this is about
00:17:38.880 protecting that group from these guys exactly for the the 99.9 percent of the officers who
00:17:46.520 would not get involved in this you're right their their reputation and how they feel about themselves
00:17:53.080 and how the public feels about them look it's not easy being a police police officer in canada
00:17:57.720 there's there's there's there's hit rap songs legendary songs about you know f the police
00:18:03.780 to fund the police hate the police i mean everyone loves the paramedics the firefighters it's not
00:18:09.660 easy being a cop and every day they see the worst moments uh society has to offer every day every
00:18:16.060 single day so this is not a a shot at those police but what happens when a corrupt element of this
00:18:23.320 group i mean they're reporting the cops selling coke to each other in this the you know the the
00:18:29.800 what's coming out of this investigation it almost doesn't seem real mike it does seem like
00:18:35.060 something out of a crime movie right uh but that puts those officers that we're talking about in
00:18:42.620 more danger every single day i couldn't agree more i could not agree more and it's already a
00:18:48.760 tough enough job and this the mental strain that strain on families and relationships it's already
00:18:54.720 there it's well documented how tough it is mentally and physically and the danger involved
00:18:59.820 being a police officer and now potentially you're going out there and you could be the victim of a
00:19:06.000 cartel or a gang that not even realizing it that's this is where it's tough and this is where
00:19:12.240 unfortunately they will have to with these officers that have been alleged to do this who
00:19:18.680 are in an investigation they are going to put them through the the mother of all ringers in
00:19:23.620 the courts of canada to get to the bottom of it and if it means like hey like i did this but and
00:19:29.700 start naming other people because i even think like the highest level of the toronto police
00:19:33.840 and you see the mayor in the province and all like hey we got to get to the bottom of this
00:19:38.800 yeah it becomes like look you're a police officer you're not exactly wealthy and all of a sudden
00:19:44.200 you think you can be corrupted by a gang leader involved with a cartel and they start throwing
00:19:48.900 money at you like and it's easy work for you as a cop think about it i just what's the address
00:19:54.120 can you just tell me that address and you may think it's nothing but i can see where
00:19:59.380 eventually you you go to 5 000 plus officers they say no just takes one to say yes to get
00:20:05.680 the information you need right this uh project south is uh well we haven't heard i mean this
00:20:13.220 This is, we may be updating this on our weekly crime show
00:20:16.760 on a semi-annual, like a semi-monthly basis.
00:20:20.360 As it unfolds.
00:20:21.620 Because every two, three weeks,
00:20:23.060 there's going to be another layer to it
00:20:24.360 that we have to talk about.
00:20:25.540 It's quite the investigation.
00:20:27.420 Yeah, and we will follow it.
00:20:29.160 Jim, thank you very much.
00:20:30.340 This has been the crime update.
00:20:32.400 I want to appeal to this camera, if I may.
