00:00:00.000 hey Anthony Fury here for another edition of the roundtable with Paul
00:00:09.540 Micucci hey Paul hey Anthony how's it going good good how are you good good
00:00:13.500 looking forward to seeing some good videos today yeah well one is a video
00:00:18.120 and the other is an interesting social media post so good good fodder for a
00:00:22.140 roundtable discussion today to get your thoughts on and for us to chat a bit
00:00:25.640 back and forth on here one is an ad actually put out by a government by a
00:00:30.380 provincial government and the other is a post a social media post put out by the
00:00:34.700 federal government both have people talking for different reasons but I
00:00:39.260 think they kind of work together so I wanted to want to break these down with
00:00:42.680 you yeah kick them off let's take a look yeah so the first this is an
00:00:46.280 advertisement by the Ontario government that we're not gonna see on our airwaves
00:00:51.620 they have actually spent 75 million dollars for an ad that's gonna be played
00:00:57.680 on the American airwaves take a look at this when someone says let's impose
00:01:04.640 tariffs on foreign imports it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by
00:01:09.260 protecting American products and jobs and sometimes for a short while it works
00:01:15.620 but only for a short time but over the long run such trade barriers hurt every
00:01:21.600 American worker and consumer high tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign
00:01:28.980 countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars then the worst happens markets
00:01:35.520 shrink and collapse businesses and industry shut down and millions of people
00:01:39.660 lose their jobs throughout the world there's a growing realization that the
00:01:45.780 weight of prosperity for all nations is rejecting protectionist legislation and
00:01:50.660 promoting fair and free competition America's jobs and growth are at stake
00:01:56.960 wow so that that is actually going to play on US TV so the 75 million part of it's for
00:02:06.920 development of that commercial part of that is just to buy ads to actually tell Americans
00:02:11.600 so we're telling as Canadians we're telling Americans that tariffs are bad yeah this is the Ford
00:02:18.560 government the Ontario government doing this campaign all on uh all on American airwaves
00:02:23.480 just launching now so I know we did some of this back during the election around that time
00:02:27.860 right tariffs were first being proposed uh this is a whole new campaign just launching what do you
00:02:32.540 think of it well it's not what I think about it I wonder what Americans are going to think about it
00:02:37.280 so if I'm sitting in my you know in New York State and all of a sudden this comes across my TV
00:02:42.260 I'm going to wonder why Canada is telling me about tariffs because they probably aren't as focused on
00:02:48.380 tariffs I'm sure I talked to Don who works with us and I said to him uh you know and he has family
00:02:54.800 down in North Dakota and I said what are what are they saying about tariffs and he says they're not
00:02:59.660 saying anything they don't even care um other than you know China Russia you know the Ukraine you know
00:03:07.220 Israel that's what they're focused on but they're really not talking at all so I guess when we send
00:03:11.780 them the message about tariffs they're going to wonder why we're telling them about tariffs and then
00:03:16.880 it's a it's a good point I mean you scroll through our news sites it's tariff tariff tariff and then
00:03:21.020 you scroll through you know New York Times Fox News CNN nothing like maybe a little bit at the bottom
00:03:25.760 here and there but it's and to your point about China and how it relates to the American consumer
00:03:30.260 yeah but this is just not really on the map for them so you know how is it going to be received
00:03:35.060 they may go like what's this all about yeah and why are we using Ronald Reagan I don't know what
00:03:39.440 you know Reaganomics and the whole thing but Ronald Reagan was a beloved president right you know
00:03:44.540 actor uh you know and uh politician a difficult time in the economy I guess maybe that's why they're
00:03:53.120 using it I'm not sure how that's going to go over us using it and putting his uh speech up and trying
00:03:58.520 to tell people that it was bad now you know my question my question would be and uh you know I'm
00:04:05.600 not sure the advertisement hits home but and marketing is always hard so I understand that but
00:04:10.520 my question would be a little bit to the person who's putting that up if I'm an American and I'm
00:04:16.940 sitting at home and watching that and I just went through four years where um you know I basically saw
00:04:25.340 uh under Biden uh President Biden I saw the economy shrink GDP shrink uh unemployment uh loss of jobs and
00:04:35.360 manufacturing leaving the U.S. a huge uh debt burden I might ask the question well what else do you want
00:04:42.740 to do I guess that's I think that's the question we're all asking now at this point in time like I
00:04:48.260 understand uh Ronald uh President Ronald Reagan's speech I just kind of now think in my head well okay
00:04:54.200 again you know we're looking at it from the Canadian point of view but I think when you advertise to
00:04:59.420 someone you got to put yourself in the shoes of the person you're advertising so they're gonna say well
00:05:03.980 no like when I wasn't doing that great right like I wasn't uh you know I'm living in Cleveland I
00:05:09.680 don't know if anyone's been to Cleveland lately but yeah yeah I'm living in Cleveland and Cleveland's
00:05:14.780 like a slum we went there uh my family and I about four months ago um we stopped for gas it's pretty
00:05:20.960 scary I don't know if anyone's been to downtown Cleveland lately but um you know and all the
00:05:26.360 abandoned warehouses manufacturing people out of work homeless people on the street uh in the in the
00:05:32.900 core of the city it's it's pretty rough so they're all sitting there saying well my city you know fell
00:05:38.660 apart uh and it happened you know when we lost manufacturing and industry so you know he's
00:05:46.340 trying to bring it back I get it um do I like it no from a Canadian perspective but you know I guess
00:05:53.180 I'm not sure advertising to them in their living rooms telling them terrorists are bad and my question
00:05:59.480 if I'm sitting in that living would be what else do you want us to do I do you know like yeah what's
00:06:06.320 the takeaway in two interesting things that you said that I want to pick up on one was uh us invoking
00:06:11.420 Ronald Reagan like I get the point to say oh you guys you say you have a republican government you say
00:06:15.980 you're a conservative country but here's what you know the godfather of the conservative movement or
00:06:20.460 one of your great sort of heroes that you worship said okay fine but it might rub them the wrong way
00:06:25.740 like if you get a call from someone in Europe or Asia or whatnot I guess is this Paul yeah Paul I want
00:06:31.440 you to Jean Chrétien would actually do this in this situation I want you to act like Jean Chrétien
00:06:35.520 you know what are you doing calling me from the other side of the world invoking Chrétien tell or
00:06:39.240 you know whoever Chrétien Ryan Mulroney whoever you want to bring up like it may actually rub some
00:06:43.700 people the wrong way because you have Reagan and then you have the Ontario and Canadian government
00:06:48.920 logos and they're like what you guys think you own Reagan more than we do now so that that may be a
00:06:53.780 little difficult for them but I think more to your point like what's their level of engagement
00:06:59.240 with this issue like if you have to rank you know issues from 1 to 20 in a daily American's life and
00:07:05.140 tariffs with Canada is on there like for us I know we're talking about all the time but 1 to 20 what
00:07:10.480 we're gonna they're gonna put it as I don't know 18 or something and then maybe this ad campaign will
00:07:15.020 move it from 18 to 17 like the you know will it move the football even one yard and then what do you
00:07:20.140 even do about it like it's it's not I don't think it's gonna change policy um maybe it's just for
00:07:27.200 domestic consumption for us maybe it's just so Canadians get told your government is spending
00:07:33.580 75 million for an ad in the U.S. and you know it's gonna be I mean we're talking about it we're playing
00:07:38.820 it you know it's gonna be aired on the nightly newscast it's on social media and everywhere
00:07:42.600 75 million is a lot right that's a big buy right that's a huge buy that means you're buying huge
00:07:48.480 amount of air weight depending on the length you're running it for yeah of course but but you know
00:07:54.300 so the re I guess is that the right approach and and is there better ways to communicate your
00:07:59.700 message uh you know again I know uh we're trying to get along and try to work out a you know kuzma
00:08:07.200 deal um we're going into 2026 which 2026 which is key is this the best message to again send on the
00:08:16.560 heels of going in for that negotiation or do we really want to buck where he's going because you
00:08:22.440 know uh president trump is is touting it as his success you know I've made trillions you know this
00:08:28.460 is you know we made one trillion last year I made 17 trillion in investment you know he's already
00:08:33.620 saying that he's trying to say whether it is or not it's a huge success and it's working well and
00:08:39.280 there's something else you're saying that his his salesmanship will be far superior to the
00:08:43.240 salesmanship of this ad well sure he's he's you know he's got half the country you know who voted
00:08:48.920 for him that's supporting him people that believe in him that are thinking his agenda is moving so
00:08:54.040 yeah I I you know better ways to do it 75 million dollars I guess you know they'd say it's a drop in
00:09:00.340 the bucket for what they usually spend but I probably think there's better ways of spending that money
00:09:04.480 yeah I think the ad is is ultimately an odd look and speaking of odd looks here's the other ad that I
00:09:10.460 wanted to to bring to your attention get your thoughts on take a look at this social media post
00:09:14.720 that was put up by immigration and citizenship Canada so our federal immigration body dealing
00:09:20.780 with policies here domestically but also how we communicate them abroad how we engage with
00:09:26.320 prospective immigrants refugee claimants this social media post which has gone viral says
00:09:32.240 thinking about moving to Canada did you know Canada has public health care learn how it works
00:09:38.520 who can get it and what services are covered click here more and this is out out to the world Paul
00:09:45.140 this is out to all you know all seven eight nine billion people so we just did a show you know a
00:09:52.040 health care show and really what we're proving on the health care show is that government plans to
00:09:56.820 reduce their expenses when it comes to promoting asylum seekers to Canada so the the budget is going down
00:10:03.480 moving forward into 2026 and on that show you know I mentioned to you earlier you know we had near
00:10:11.060 Rosenberg and it was a great show and we're going through it and I think it was last Wednesday or the
00:10:17.100 Wednesday before the government now took bill c2 and split it and now has bill c12 which really
00:10:29.320 contemplates a number of issues but the big thing coming out of that for asylum seekers is those
00:10:34.440 people who were students came to Canada on student visas there they've studied it expired they weren't
00:10:43.240 able and didn't know what to do at that point claimed asylum well they're actually going to be if c12
00:10:50.040 passes sent a letter to leave the country and that was kind of a shock on that show so here we have
00:10:56.440 here we have you know and I talked about it quite a bit but you know it really infuriates me here we
00:11:01.780 have people that came to the country we sold them a bill of goods to come study in Canada a lot of
00:11:07.700 courses and a lot of colleges and education institutions that probably weren't didn't have
00:11:15.540 the greatest programming so we said come spend 40,000 a year as a foreign student enroll do a two-year
00:11:23.400 a three-year course you know so they're into it for about 80 to 120,000 committing two or three years
00:11:29.660 their families back home and you know I think you know I explained it on the show but for those of
00:11:34.980 you and I always tell people this story I learned years ago that a lot of these people come here when
00:11:41.120 they come from these countries the different countries whether it be India China Nepal wherever
00:11:46.900 they come from they basically mortgage their lands that their family have had for decades
00:11:55.160 wow so what they do is they there's not a lot of ways in some of those countries and most of those
00:12:00.600 countries to work and get ahead so you know you you exist savings yeah you exist but you know your
00:12:07.620 father takes the family residence and passes it to the older son you know the daughters get married to
00:12:14.340 the sons who have then you know been bequested or given homes and assets right so a lot of it is
00:12:20.380 asset transfer and a lot of these countries um it's asset transfer so what we did is we said okay
00:12:26.620 you guys now you know come to Canada it's a safe haven you're going to be you get a PR and then when
00:12:32.020 you get your PR you can work really hard and you can grow your family right so that was a dream that
00:12:36.960 they all saw we sold that like that's like health care you know the same thing we sold that to them
00:12:42.600 we said you know if you come to Canada that'll happen so more so what they did is they went to
00:12:47.680 the bank they went to their existing banks now a lot of these countries have banks but they're not
00:12:51.920 like our banks so you know our banks are pseudo government right you know we give five people or
00:12:57.860 five groups licenses to run banks you know over there their banks are like just investment funds
00:13:04.440 they're a little different the way they're set up so more like American banking right where you know
00:13:08.500 there's some regulation but it's a looser regulatory structure um they get a a license to actually run
00:13:15.500 a financial institution they set it up as you know uh Ali's you know bank right so that Ali's bank
00:13:22.760 gets uh you know 10 million dollars into it and they start giving loans and it sort of grows as an
00:13:29.980 institution and you know moves forward so they go they go there to his bank and they say to him can we
00:13:36.180 get a mortgage and he says sure you can get a mortgage but I want all your land you know your
00:13:41.140 security is all your land now so you can I'll give you that loan for 120 000 for your little girl to go
00:13:48.200 to Canada to you know get it so they've literally bet the farm on these people they bet the farm
00:13:53.780 the whole farm so when it's done so this is where I think people are kind of missing the boat on it
00:13:58.680 when when it's done and when these people are you know if in in c12 passes and we send the letter
00:14:05.400 and they go home they're going home like there's no land anymore Ali's bank has taken the land
00:14:14.400 you know there's very little ability for them to make a living jobs and to actually pay rent so
00:14:22.400 they're gonna have to go to a very rough you know they'll move outside the city to a small shelter
00:14:27.120 they'll crop the land they'll try to exceed someone in this in the in the family will go
00:14:32.960 and live in this the main city and if it's like and try to keep a job living with 10 people some
00:14:38.520 people will have brought shame on the family depending on the cultural values and so forth
00:14:42.860 I imagine like someone could be severely punished for well a lot of them don't even go back they
00:14:47.360 commit suicide they actually run off they they don't even because the shame of it all um you know
00:14:53.300 because they took that leap and it missed so you know we're we're saying you know come do that and
00:14:58.980 it's terrible you know right now we're in a terrible state in the immigration and I can't emphasize it
00:15:05.020 enough how badly we've done at this right we keep changing the regulations only every so many months we
00:15:10.840 keep moving it around it's it's just awful what we're doing and so and it has all these uh human
00:15:16.920 consequences that go back and now right and and now sort of this pops up yeah you know on the hills of
00:15:24.160 you know uh come to Canada for for free health care right so now now you know it's interesting how
00:15:32.840 this works so we on the international scene from a education perspective are not seen as a great place
00:15:39.640 to go anymore so I want to make sure everyone knows that like no one no one in any of these countries
00:15:43.920 are saying wow you know you should go to Canada they're saying man do you hear about the you know
00:15:48.780 his cousin his cousin really got screwed over in Canada he went there he did a two-year course on
00:15:55.060 business administration went to get a job and he couldn't get a job in a restaurant in Canada right
00:16:00.300 so he spent a hundred thousand dollars to get a business administration degree from
00:16:06.560 baba college and he can't get a job there but he can get it he might be washing dishes and you know
00:16:13.020 what he's trying to he claimed asylum and now it looks like he's coming back home it's really
00:16:18.520 incredible Paul like the way you line it up like that and we we have this post here that I guess I
00:16:23.400 don't know what they think they're doing being compassionate or like they're they're crossing the
00:16:27.240 streams because the policies are tightening up there's so much public frustration with with with
00:16:31.760 both the immigration system right now and then with the health care system because millions of
00:16:36.140 Canadians don't have a family doctor so what are they even talking about here they're like
00:16:39.960 and they they're showing a they're also showing an older gentleman there and we know there's
00:16:44.700 concerns like we don't we want to bring people young people to work and be productive even though
00:16:49.300 to your point that's falling apart but this is an older gentleman just coming to Canada instantly
00:16:53.680 going into the health care system like bizarro but but good luck to him because maybe he can't even
00:16:58.600 get that health care support like it's yeah like you're pointing out it's not just unfair uh to people
00:17:04.680 who are already in Canada to have this happen it's unfair to lie to people about what things are really like
00:17:09.460 here and then have them be the victim of a bunch of scams and then have like you said in the worst
00:17:13.840 case scenario commit suicide because they've destroyed everything in their family equity well
00:17:17.740 here and here's the interesting or crazy thing about this so we're decreasing the amount of money
00:17:24.100 we've budgeted so if that stays we're coming up to the November 4th deadline where we're going to see
00:17:29.200 the budget going forward so in 2024 for what we what we spent you know we and with our plan at that point
00:17:39.640 we said that the amount we spent on asylum seekers would go down so roughly you know we got up to 6.2 billion
00:17:47.320 dollars we were saying it was going to ratchet back to close to 5 billion over the next few years right so it's going to start to go down
00:17:55.120 um so it's still a big industry so just I want to kind of put that in context for you so we're not talking
00:18:01.560 millions we're talking billions right so the challenge right now is a little bit so it's kind of an odd
00:18:07.060 conundrum so now you have all these you know converted study visas to asylum they're kind of in this weird
00:18:14.200 zone where they could be getting a letter any day you have natural asylum seekers with a high amount of
00:18:21.120 unemployment right so they're kind of just sitting there getting a monthly stipend from the government
00:18:27.860 they they walked across they came to Quebec walked across yelled asylum they're sitting in a hotel or
00:18:35.060 sitting somewhere now waiting for I don't know what they're waiting for but they're waiting for something
00:18:39.660 right and we also have this lump of money set aside you know say 3.5 billion to spend on
00:18:50.940 asylum seekers going forward so you know it's kind of like one of those industries that become you know
00:18:57.860 an industry that makes an industry within an industry so you have to worry sometimes when you
00:19:02.680 build a business that you you internalize your business so much that everyone in your business
00:19:06.880 thinks the business inside the business is itself it's you're not dealing with the public so if
00:19:12.180 you're b2c or b2b you sometimes in a in a business to customer relationship if you don't do it really
00:19:20.520 well your your team can create their own b2b so they're just doing business inside their business
00:19:26.660 right so you have to be a little worried and this kind of happens with governments where all of a sudden
00:19:31.700 you know I'm I'm here and I start to create this mechanism where I have to do this stuff because
00:19:38.140 if I don't do this stuff I don't have a role you know I need asylum seekers because I need to keep
00:19:43.400 that 3.5 billion moving so I have to do it so then I look at it and I say to myself well I don't think
00:19:49.780 colleges are going to do it anymore because right now in Canada across around the world college has got
00:19:54.620 a bad rap oh yeah yeah so okay well what's the other thing people need other than education
00:20:01.540 health care right so loop that into it to sort of keep it all keep it going again yeah so now I start
00:20:08.920 putting ads around the world hey you know come for free health well holy cow like wake up now you like
00:20:14.300 you just said Anthony you know other shows we've done the health care our health care situation you
00:20:21.240 know is a mess right it is a mess like we we understand it's a mess right now you know we talked
00:20:27.820 about on a number of shows per capita we're about number six in the world in total spend we have a
00:20:33.700 huge amount of wait time lineups you know we have uh fewer doctors than comparative countries with
00:20:40.660 similar spends so if you take uh Australia Denmark Norway when you look at the number of doctors they
00:20:47.440 have we have almost half the number of doctors they have and they almost spend the same per capita as us
00:20:52.880 okay right so so you know we're not knocking it out on the health care front at all we get it so
00:21:00.200 the numbers aren't proving out very well on the health care so now you look you tell people to come
00:21:05.420 and get free health care on top of that so a system that's struggling already we now say let's come forward
00:21:13.560 and let's you know add on more people it's crazy but but if you think about it so this interesting thing
00:21:21.460 we've just seen a bunch of things develop in the last few days on the on the job front but but to
00:21:26.040 your point sorry it's crazy if it's not a ponzi scheme if it is a ponzi scheme then that's how it
00:21:30.500 works it makes sense to like you said take it to the next level yeah yeah you just all you're doing
00:21:34.580 you don't care you don't care why they're coming you just want to keep them coming so your your reason
