00:00:00.000 If we want to bring industry back, if we want to find mining roads and ways for people to find a
00:00:05.860 life in Northern Ontario, we have this huge population in the city cores across the country,
00:00:13.240 and we say, well, we have this huge country and all these possibilities for labor for people,
00:00:20.260 for, you know, affording themselves in so many industries. They have to get there to start with.
00:00:26.160 it has to be appealing in that regard we can't start things from a decrepit state
00:00:35.120 hi thanks for joining us look at this the tour's begun we are on our way across canada i'm mike
00:00:40.960 this is brady and uh yes we are doing that very thing we are in sault st marie today
00:00:47.120 and uh we're a brower's jansen which is a beautiful wine bar in uh sault st marie i'd
00:00:53.040 recommend it and a little bit later in the show we're going to meet the proprietor who's got a
00:00:57.760 very unique idea that obviously has caught on and uh joining us with uh sort of a live audience of
00:01:04.160 locals uh what do they call themselves the uh the sexy men's whiskey club they're the beautiful
00:01:10.320 bastards oh the the sexy bastards sexy bastards whiskey tasting club tasting club that's it
00:01:16.640 hopefully we got that right we have paul in in the house here who we've had a nice chat with
00:01:21.280 and uh of course uh uh just a wonderful first day on the road as we've really had a very easy trip
00:01:29.840 very i mean it's a lot of hours on the road uh from toronto uh but the truth is it's a beautiful
00:01:35.920 drive it is a very beautiful drive and we got one of the nicest days that we've had all month no i
00:01:41.600 know like just a it's a perfect drive if you haven't made the drive uh to sous saint marie uh i'll
00:01:48.320 tell you how it goes for us from uh toronto we made our way up through barry of course out of
00:01:54.480 toronto past muskoka uh up past french river and then to sudbury from sudbury to sous saint marie
00:02:01.680 and some of the most spectacular waterways blind river on the way uh uh the serpent serpent river
00:02:08.480 uh so many beautiful stops along the way and uh touching uh the indigenous community as we made
00:02:14.480 our way up uh trying to trying to understand uh what the lay of the land is up here while we're
00:02:21.280 just being amazed by the scenery you know it's it's funny coming from the toronto area um and
00:02:26.880 being the age that i am in my 40s the sioux anything past sudbury feels nostalgic for me
00:02:32.800 yeah not only because i spent a lot of time here when i was young but it just feels like the way
00:02:37.440 kind of the canada i grew up in not saying that toronto's not great and it's amazing and has
00:02:41.680 its amazing things but i love coming up to places like the suit because you get to feel like this
00:02:46.160 is what everybody talks about when they visit canada it's true that it's kind of quintessential
00:02:51.200 canada canadiana at its finest yes uh we you know you pass marshland and uh canadian shield on the
00:02:57.360 way up uh small communities that uh have everything from artisans to local festivals that are
00:03:03.520 beginning right now uh across the country and of course now we're starting to see some of the
00:03:08.480 industry as we made our way up to sudbury uh and and up through muskoka past sudbury into
00:03:13.840 sioux st marie we start to see some of the mining industry going on uh we start to see some of the
00:03:19.520 pulp and paper traffic making its way south yep it's a lot of logging trucks a lot of logging
00:03:25.280 trucks that was the only part of the drive that kind of put a little bit of fear in my heart is
00:03:28.720 every time that we come past the logging truck at full speed i always feel like we might become part
00:03:34.320 of that truck um so if you're driving to the sioux or up north just keep in mind that they own the
00:03:40.000 road we are just the uh people around them yeah also this time of the year we were warned okay
00:03:45.040 look there is a certain wildlife uh from dusk uh and and onward throughout the night so we're
00:03:50.800 limiting our trip to just kind of wrapping up the day with a podcast we've got deer on the road
00:03:55.200 we've got coyotes we've got foxes we have the moose and sasquatch i swear i seen him on the drive
00:04:02.000 i don't know about that to be honest with you i i think that we should probably uh
00:04:06.080 leave that to the locals to speculate on brady and we'll move on to the next town
00:04:10.400 uh having said that you know it's interesting because you get a local perspective uh one of
00:04:14.720 the gentlemen as i mentioned paul that we spoke to earlier uh he was i said to him you know what
00:04:20.720 are some of the topics that you think that we should be talking about up here and you know the
00:04:24.560 number one thing that he said was potholes i get it i can't disagree i get it um we saw so much
00:04:31.200 construction on the way out there's so much construction going on northern ontario right
00:04:35.680 now but here's the thing that i see about the construction they're actually working and doing
00:04:39.120 things unlike our friends in toronto who seem to be just drinking coffee okay so we saw a lot of
00:04:45.120 paving going on today we waited several times to get past construction for paving so paul i do hope
00:04:50.800 that you get the opportunity to see some paving in your town but what it seems to me is the further
00:04:56.880 you get away from the city core of toronto in ontario the worse the roads get and i do understand
00:05:03.180 there's wear and tear due to weather there's wear and tear due to heavy traffic uh with the trucks
00:05:07.640 the trucks are heavier yeah but that needs to be accounted for look look at how big of that one
00:05:11.800 tank where we're like i could only imagine what is in that tanker that tanker was so big it was
00:05:15.960 literally on wheels on the ground uh the other thing is there's a lot of road hogging that goes
00:05:20.560 on on a two-lane highway so i do understand that we need to make sure that the shoulders and
00:05:25.200 surfaces but we need to make sure that they don't get so decrepit before they get uh repair and that
00:05:33.020 needs to be accounted for i think and some if we want to bring industry back if we want to find
00:05:38.220 mining roads and ways for people to find a life in northern ontario we have this huge population
00:05:44.040 in in the city cores yeah across the country and we say well we have this huge country and all these
00:05:50.880 uh possibilities for labor for people for uh you know fording themselves in so many uh industries
00:05:58.160 they have to get there to start with it has to be appealing in that regard we can't
00:06:03.440 start things from a decrepit state i think that needs to be thought through i don't disagree paul
00:06:08.660 about the potholes you know and it's it's it's one of those things where yes we need to work on
00:06:13.760 toronto and we didn't work on the infrastructure in toronto make those highways better we did an
00:06:17.320 episode about the 407 and the 401 being a complete problem right now and the 403 and the 427 etc etc
00:06:22.660 but you need these roads up here even better because nothing will get to Toronto
00:06:27.280 if it doesn't come down these roads well we talk about these major infrastructure programs and
00:06:32.060 you see in Ontario I think I saw a sign that said 39 billion dollars going into uh improvements to
00:06:37.860 our roads but that includes the 413 the 413 which I believe is already speculated to come in over
00:06:43.740 budget uh and then not to mention they have a bridge re uh structuring and refurbishing going
00:06:51.340 on oh look it's the uh it's the sexy you know hello gentlemen how are you guys take a seat make
00:06:57.180 yourself comfortable uh so having said that uh yeah i do think that the infrastructure and our
00:07:02.780 major programs need to include include making sure that these roads are in uh in decent shape you
00:07:08.860 know fellows that are just joining us we're talking about potholes uh we were we were told
00:07:12.380 But there's a big pothole problem going on in Sault Ste. Marie.
00:07:16.200 So let's just recap what we were talking about.
00:07:18.760 We just think that, you know, we hear about all these complaints
00:07:21.220 where we're from in Toronto in the area, right?
00:07:22.900 And how the highways are over-congested and nothing,
00:07:25.200 construction's always taking forever.
00:07:26.920 But I think, yes, there's some truth to that.
00:07:29.640 But these roads need to be a little bit more pampered
00:07:31.800 than the ones in Toronto because nothing's going to get to Toronto
00:07:34.020 if it doesn't come through these nice roads.
00:07:36.500 So that's pretty much where we were at before we walked in the room.
00:07:39.040 Okay, so that was topic number one.
00:07:40.680 Do you guys want to throw a topic at us?
00:07:42.220 because we can complain about just anything i promise you and we'll try to take a clean
00:07:47.080 perspective if we can uh but when i met this group earlier they were like they have a strict rule
00:07:52.300 i'll leave some of the rules out by the way guys but one of them is no uh no politics no religion
00:07:58.680 discussion among the group yeah so you know maybe i could ask you guys what's the big pastime in
00:08:04.940 Sault Ste. Marie the Greyhounds as we go Greyhounds okay Jim Lang or we was talking about that on our
00:08:13.560 way up here whatever other host Jim Lang uh did a promo for us coming up here and he was like go
00:08:18.600 Greyhounds uh of course uh the NHL uh has greeted many uh incredible prospects that came out of this
00:08:26.200 town other northern towns in Ontario as well and and across the country um who's the big star right
00:08:32.400 now in the Greyhounds Brady Martin Brady Martin yeah Chase Reed Chase Reed okay before I've never
00:08:38.960 heard Brady Martin I think I would remember that look out for those rookie cards you're
00:08:42.480 going to want to grab those oh wow overall pick for Nashville last year we need to buy some hockey
00:08:48.980 boxes I love that it's a hockey town that's one of the things we could talk about as well I mean
00:08:53.340 we're on our way up and I'm like oh look it's the it's the Bobby or a hockey hall of fame and that's
00:08:59.580 we were driving through Perry and he's like we have to stop I'm like we have to be in Sioux
00:09:04.260 it kind of broke my heart I didn't want to go next round but that spirit for hockey is still
00:09:10.720 very much alive as we make our way through Barry and all the way up uh really all of these uh sort
00:09:17.040 of prominent teams that we know about in Ontario that the rest of the world has no idea about
00:09:22.500 they just know these kids when they arrive to the NHL yeah yeah I I love the idea that
00:09:28.860 we're still hockey oriented as an entire country it's like the really one of the major things that
00:09:34.140 brings us all together whether you're a diehard hockey fan whether you're just a guy like me who
00:09:38.300 kind of tries to watch the you know the stanley cup that's about as much as i get but we're all
00:09:42.940 loyal to it right yeah why are we so loyal to hockey what's what's the i don't know why we're
00:09:47.660 so loyal to the leafs i don't know who do you guys just asking i want to know montreal we got montreal
00:09:52.700 colorado anybody paul who do you no hockey for no hockey for paul he made that real clear but
00:09:59.300 that's fair i like the st louis blues maybe he was a hockey fan but then the leafs just broke his
00:10:04.460 heart no not even close i i lived beside peter zezel for a couple months in toronto when i was
00:10:10.700 a kid when he was a player and he used to come over and bring me all this merch he had just got
00:10:14.660 signed to the st louis blues and i'd be like i don't know what to do with this i just give it
00:10:18.240 my friends but i had no idea i feel so bad sorry we could have paid for this trip with that i
00:10:22.800 probably could have yeah you know pay with the trip with the wayne gretzky stick that i got for
00:10:26.560 doing the wayne gretzky commercial when i was a kid i still have that okay this is a cool topic
00:10:30.480 what's the best piece of merch you ever got your hands on or the best collectible you ever got
00:10:35.360 from something oh um my one-on-one conor mcgregor i have a one-on-one i pulled it
00:10:40.640 uh a one-on-one card uh collector card yeah yeah what's that worth i made a couple grand now his
00:10:46.400 values dropped quite a bit since the charges and such over the past couple years these guys want
00:10:51.040 to know if you have the card on you actually no i don't okay safely in the safety deposit box oh
00:10:55.680 all right well uh okay so uh anything else in the it's all mainly sports and uh the collectibles
00:11:02.400 that you have are they mainly sports oriented yeah mainly sports pro wrestling that kind of
00:11:06.320 thing i'm a dork okay um i've got some i i assessed that on the way up ufc gloves signed by like john
00:11:12.080 bones jones and homs at uh chemaya things like that just hoist gracie i got some hit some mats
00:11:18.000 with a couple of gsp i got a set of dice my mom got in vegas signed by charlie pride you know who
00:11:23.920 charlie pride is anybody charlie pride all right charlie pride um i have some hulk hogan signed
00:11:28.720 merch uh it was a big hulk big hulk hogan fan dude uh you know what else i got do you remember uh uh
00:11:34.800 the guy who did the uh the weather tom brown tom brown why is well ctv i got him to sign a hat for
00:11:40.720 me once that also in my safety deposit box at home so don't even think about it i am still on
00:11:47.920 the search for a signed copy of reading mcneil's first album if anybody wants to send that to me
00:11:53.120 you can find me on instagram sadly i think i have that at home oh please hook me yeah no no
00:11:57.760 signed copy though uh yeah of course all right all right that's another classic right everyone
00:12:02.560 loves reading that i can sign that he won't know uh fishing yeah fishing is that is this another
00:12:08.960 topic that i just heard fishing is a big one up here what do you fish for guys that's yeah you
00:12:16.400 know what i earned that one that's better than venison i don't know if you heard that isn't his
00:12:20.320 answer was fish you know uh never mind brady's fishing for sasquatch up here you guys i was
00:12:26.560 fishing for sasquatch on the way i was convinced i also wanted to take a detour to lake to thooey
00:12:31.280 to go for red speckled trout but uh he didn't want to do that either i'm a red speckled trout guy
00:12:36.000 what's the fish of choice salmon yeah salmon what white fish yeah white fish is great
00:12:43.200 what is the season when does the season start for you guys fishing up here
00:12:49.040 they don't fish no it's just a big thing here
00:12:53.520 around august 15 but you guys are already fishing is what i'm being told you're already fishing
00:12:57.840 that illegally right well paul is for sure we'll post his photo later uh for the ministry uh having
00:13:04.720 said that uh i one of the things i did want to ask uh and i'm gonna ask this in every town if
00:13:11.100 there was one thing and you could just put your hand up and i'll repeat it if we can't hear it
00:13:14.780 but you can say it loud if there was one thing you could say to our i don't care about your
00:13:18.560 politics if there was one thing you could say to our prime minister right now guys what would it
00:13:23.240 be yeah you take a second to think about it oh wow this is a tough one i have a bleep machine
00:13:30.440 don't worry our editor no that's a comment that's that's a comment not a question sir but uh it is
00:13:36.440 noted the best thing since sliced bread is one of the you know one of the pieces of feedback there
00:13:46.860 what paul what what makes you say that look at the competition okay that is true he's wow he doesn't
00:13:53.720 have a lot of competition i do have to admit uh even across the country provincially he's he's
00:13:59.460 being made to look pretty good uh and then the comment over here was you can polish a turd
00:14:07.840 and this is where canada sits and we can have these conversations but you know that is another
00:14:14.280 actually that's a very valid contrary opinion that is very common as well one is that this guy
00:14:21.880 is doing an amazing thing around the world and he's really rallying for canada and he's getting
00:14:27.120 industry back to work and he's going to build pipelines and then the other opinion is ah he's
00:14:32.160 a banker he's a billionaire he's got his own self-interest in mind and and that is a hard
00:14:38.720 thing for people to tear apart yeah it is and you know i get it why he gets the slack that he gets
00:14:44.320 but i think anybody in that position is always going to put themselves in a place where people
00:14:49.360 are gonna throw tomatoes at you yeah that's kind of the job i think i think uh i wish you were
00:14:58.560 miked i love pulling the third mic i love the canadian sense of humor we have that okay trump
00:15:04.720 so you know that's why we that's why we find you so entertaining uh you can have opinions there
00:15:10.960 yeah guys no one holds it against you i gotta ask this is the other thing i want to find out
00:15:14.960 as we go town to town and we won't we won't draw this out these guys have these guys there you go
00:15:20.480 get a sticker for that one these guys have more you just want a hat sir you just want a hat
00:15:27.920 my goodness is uh what's what's the job situation like in sous saint marie the surrounding area
00:15:34.880 in in general is is there decent employment is it a struggle in many parts of uh ontario
00:15:41.040 it's it's a struggle many parts of canada it's almost impossible how's it feeling right now in
00:15:46.320 sault saint marie i was told to shut up yeah but don't don't don't know i know one of the i know
00:15:55.120 the rules of your club and that's not one of them by the way you're allowed is is is employment at
00:16:01.280 a place where it's noticeably down and there's just i think if you want to work though you'll
00:16:07.120 find a job okay so the that that response is fair if you want to work that's hold on that's that's
00:16:13.360 a key point if you want to work you will find work yeah and and in some cases that isn't
00:16:22.080 it doesn't seem to be the motive behind what people are doing with their lives but i have
00:16:25.920 that feeling in big cities too like toronto i've been saying that to guys for years i'm like
00:16:29.760 there's jobs out there there's opportunities out there the bigger the city probably the bigger the
00:16:33.760 opportunities that could be found but you got to go out and find it you got to go out and put
00:16:36.720 yourself out there and do it i think people are so used to this online world now where everything's
00:16:40.880 easy it's easy to market something you can just go on facebook yeah it's easy to do this you can
00:16:46.080 just do that it's easy to do this oh yeah yeah but it's not and that's there and physically do
00:16:50.400 it nowadays right the gig economy is what i think is killing us and it gives everybody says oh kids
00:16:55.840 today they can't afford a home yes they can if they go get a union job because they've got training
00:17:00.000 in a trade or they've got and i'm not just saying trade but you the effort has to be there you have
00:17:05.520 to want to work and you can't expect to work at the highest levels on the first day that you arrive
00:17:12.640 you need to put the effort in when you and i started when i started you hired me as the ceo
00:17:17.440 though right no you totally misread that that that's not what i said i said we'll see we'll see
00:17:25.200 you oh on another day and you showed up anyway but essentially uh you need to know that you're
00:17:31.840 were when when we started out i mean we started in in in a wacky business that's uh entertainment
00:17:37.000 and and media but when we started out man i worked like i would get in a vehicle if i needed to and
00:17:43.440 i would travel across the country doing shows okay so my life hasn't really progressed that much
00:17:50.460 we're doing that right now mike that's what we're doing again okay so it takes the effort and that's
00:17:54.860 how we're going to grow this network because if you want to if you want something you have to work
00:17:58.480 for it but i i do see i hear that sentiment quite a bit if you want a job you will find it it may
00:18:04.180 not be the dream job but if you need to work and you want to pay your bills you will find the route
00:18:09.040 to get there the government forgets about sue saint marie is a comment that i'm hearing from
00:18:16.600 the crowd yeah i i wouldn't i think the government anything north of barry doesn't exist i was
00:18:22.040 actually just about to say it feels like anything north of barry just doesn't really get acknowledged
00:18:25.800 like north bay or new liskard um right all the way up to the suit like it there's a lot of uh
00:18:33.560 there's a lot of missed opportunity here well there's so many programs focused on uh the gta
00:18:39.000 uh focused on uh industry that is based in the major cities in ontario that leave uh places that
00:18:47.400 are so i mean this you drive into sault st marie you feel how prime this is for industry right now
00:18:53.960 yeah yeah like there is real estate available there are uh people that are willing to work
00:18:59.960 it's got that culture of okay work hard yeah it has seasons but there's a life here affordable
00:19:08.360 homes you know places that people can actually build a life the government should be focused
00:19:13.960 on places like this and developing them we got areas here like here in the zoo you've got water
00:19:19.800 air and land access and shipping for all three available shipping so high in cost of fuel
00:19:27.800 just kills the people from southern ontario so what do you okay so you say the cost of fuel
00:19:33.160 is just killing the the industry the tax base is makes it non-competitive even though you have
00:19:40.920 port access land air uh the ability to uh build an industry because you've got the real estate to do
00:19:48.120 it with uh you're a border town you literally could be right across the uh right across the
00:19:55.400 border you could have amazing relationships but the government's not giving the tax breaks the
00:20:00.280 government's not looking out for they'd rather put the businesses down south for most people
00:20:05.800 and most people supporting the north the government the government again the feedback here is the
00:20:11.080 government is feeding southern parts of the province and why do you think that is because
00:20:18.120 our prime minister leads an instagram life instead of a real one okay this is a full circle we're
00:20:24.280 all coming back around did you already did you already give him a hat uh he got a hat yeah all
00:20:29.240 right well no no listen i don't want to give him a whole wardrobe but goodness but i do think he's
00:20:33.640 a good rep uh but the comment is is a fair one as well that the prime minister isn't really focused
00:20:38.760 on the things prime minister or premier the premier minister the premier the prime minister
00:20:43.880 premier is not much better but but the the reality is if you wanted to do a major project
00:20:49.800 places like sous saint marie are really prime for it now we don't we don't have any major projects
00:20:54.280 that i'm seeing in this area uh but it does make perfect sense so close to the border so easy to
00:21:01.320 access it would be an amazing place to put a data center if you wanted to actually a question that
00:21:08.920 i do have though so speaking of the border cities we hear we constantly hear about the united states
00:21:13.240 that they're taking a hit from canadians going down there there's no tourism right especially
00:21:16.680 at the border are we starting to see in in the sioux that americans aren't coming up here anymore
00:21:22.680 both ways yeah there's not as much traffic over the border is what we're hearing so they can
00:21:25.800 complain about you know them not having our tourism there and all their border cities are
00:21:30.520 going down but we're having the exact same issue so it sounds like maybe we should just start
00:21:35.240 getting along again yeah it would be a lot easier i think on both sides and by the way i do believe
00:21:40.760 there's relationships on both sides of the border had an opportunity last week to speak with the uh
00:21:45.800 uh the office of the uh u.s ambassador to canada yeah and uh pete hoekstra and his office and
00:21:53.080 And, you know, the feeling is that there is no goodwill left that is presented to the media.
00:22:01.500 Meanwhile, they really do want to extend goodwill.
00:22:05.240 And we're forgetting about deals that are in place.
00:22:07.260 We're ignoring that we have some amazing tariff deals through Kuzma, but he doesn't get that opportunity to present it.
00:22:15.120 Well, we just did an episode on Kuzma with our friend Paul, and it might not be a thing.
00:22:21.780 yeah right so that's a great episode by the way it's really interesting uh paul schools us every
00:22:28.860 time when it comes to economics and uh and global economics because kuzma may not even
00:22:36.120 it may not even make it past the drawing board it may just get delayed until next year because
00:22:41.080 there's a war going on right and uh the president down there is focused on other things and kuzma
00:22:46.160 and wait right the kusma deal so well i'll tell you this uh as we make our way from uh guys we're
00:22:53.040 going to after this we're going to thunder bay you ever heard of that it's kind of far away it's a
00:22:57.440 hell of a lot further away when we plan this trip you know i think of ontario as uh mississauga to
00:23:06.000 scarborough not even really scarborough missus anyway do you have any idea how big uh ontario
00:23:13.680 is it's going to take us several days to get out of it uh and by the way follow us if you don't mind
00:23:18.960 because uh we're going to update uh some beautiful places along the way and some great people as well

00:23:30.880 hit that qr code if you get one of these if not just go to tplmedia.ca local let them know what

00:24:54.700 in my seat and we'll be right back stand by and uh please watch this in the meantime we'll be back
00:25:00.020 with josh welcome back to tpl media we are here with the owner of the brower's jansen the most
00:25:09.120 amazing wine bar the place to be in the sioux josh how are you my friend i'm doing well thank
00:25:14.000 you very much let's get that mic up to you sorry we set that up for you properly but uh here we are
00:25:19.200 anyway so what do we do here in the sioux what do we do at brower's jansen uh you come into brower's
00:25:24.300 jansen you enjoy wine that we make here in house you enjoy local beers some beer we make here in
00:25:30.000 house and you enjoy charcuterie charcuterie explain the charcuterie to me my friend i am
00:25:36.080 not a foodie i know uh big macs and whoppers okay also both great choices but here you will get uh
00:25:42.560 meats cheeses sides fresh bread oil and balsamic a little bit of everything but uh yeah yeah okay
00:25:49.280 so what's the hot item this week what's everybody been ordering this week oh this week we've got a
00:25:54.640 new martini uh purple haze it's pretty popular purple haze that's close to my heart i like the
00:25:59.760 cannabis everybody watching who knows that i've done a lot of cannabis shows but is that where
00:26:02.960 the name came from or was the jimi hendrix kind of honestly it's just purple and it's hazy oh okay
00:26:08.320 all right there's no there's no cannabis uh there's none of that not in this okay all right
00:26:12.720 all right we're not there yet what's in the purple haze if it's not a secret recipe can you let me
00:26:16.400 know with some of the things inside of it well i will tell you this it's gin and vodka oh we're
00:26:21.120 breaking the mold on this one brady so gin and vodka if i hadn't given up um drinking which you
00:26:27.360 know what i'm gonna try one before i leave what am i talking about guys we're off the wagon i'm
00:26:32.160 gonna try a purple haze okay so in sault st marie you are in one of the prime locations so when i
00:26:38.080 was driving down here i noticed that right when i walk out of the front door i could see the water
00:26:43.200 i could see the water what made you pick the spot uh you know what just it was kind of
00:26:49.520 more situational for us we were dealing with the owners here when we just got into basement brewing
00:26:55.120 and the place was for sale and that was really the reason that we bought it we just we knew
00:26:59.680 them it was a great opportunity love the location but that was a bonus how long have you been open
00:27:03.920 here uh 12 years 12 years okay so what's the uh what's the biggest misconception you had
00:27:11.440 um over the past 12 years of opening up a place like this did you have any misconceptions or did
00:27:16.640 everything surprised you and it's all just been great the biggest misconception was that owning
00:27:21.040 your own business was going to be all beer and skittles yeah yeah it's neither no it's very
00:27:25.600 yes but even that comes at a cost what do you think is the hardest part about running
00:27:29.200 running a place like this um it can be unpredictable unpredictable okay yeah
00:27:38.160 customer-wise business-wise can be unpredictable okay and i don't know what other provinces are
00:27:43.360 like to do business in but it can be challenging in ontario well we're going to find out on the
00:27:47.440 on the road here so excellent we'll i'll report back to you but so what do what do you see for
00:27:53.600 the future of brower's jansen well um there's a real shift in the market for the beverages people
00:28:02.960 prefer as we're primarily a wine bar and we try to serve craft beer we are noticing with uh this
00:28:09.680 newer generation uh light beers are you talking about the tick tockers yeah the guys who are just
00:28:15.520 obsessed and the gals are obsessed with tick tock so if they see it on tick tock now they got to go
00:28:19.520 around town and try and find out whatever that trend is yeah so you're following some of that
00:28:23.680 yes what are the one of the things that you've implemented uh a better variety of mocktails and
00:28:28.960 non-alcoholic drinks okay so you see a rise in that the non-alcoholic drinks i do yeah and i'm
00:28:34.240 noticing too that even just like you know guys my age or they're not drinking anymore right um they
00:28:39.120 may be partaking in cannabis and all that kind of stuff but they're i think it's like a health kick
00:28:43.200 going on now right so non-alcoholic drinks are on the rise you're seeing that even in the sioux
00:28:48.160 very much so and even even we're seeing a lot of the craft beer uh craft brewers closing which is
00:28:54.640 i never thought i'd see yeah we've lost some of the big guys in northern ontario why why is that
00:29:00.000 demand maybe the the shift in what people want maybe they didn't uh diversify enough
00:29:08.480 not knowing what was coming but there's just been even a shift even friends of mine that own a
00:29:13.040 restaurant they're they're noticing a lot of light beer a lot of your basic budweiser miller lights
00:29:19.920 that's what people are going to so i don't know what the change is and the shift with craft beer
00:29:23.680 but there's a shift now is it is it a price point thing like is it just because it's it's
00:29:28.400 cost a little bit more obviously or is it just it's just strictly people know their brands and
00:29:32.480 they want to stick to that brand it's like a almost like a subconscious routine that they
00:29:36.880 just keep going through right yeah i think that's part of it i think that's part of it it's costly
00:29:40.640 for craft brewers to do what they do so so if you've been here for 12 years you've you've seen
00:29:46.080 highs obviously not lows because this is a fantastic place looks like we're just constantly
00:29:49.680 growing um but those misconceptions that you were talking about if you could go back and talk to
00:29:53.920 josh 12 years ago what would be the thing that you would tell him don't do it really is it an
00:30:01.040 energy thing you just you're you this is your wife this is your life yeah yeah very much so yeah
00:30:06.800 um i can't say that's for sure but i can say with the challenges that we did encounter when we
00:30:11.600 any rent as soon as you get into commercial renovations it is you're opening pandora's box
00:30:16.800 so there's a lot of things if we had have known we wouldn't have done them yeah so it's one of
00:30:22.480 those things where i think i'm glad i i just took the leap as foolish as it may have been i'm thankful
00:30:28.160 to be where i am but knowing what i know now if you ask me if i would do it all over again
00:30:32.880 i can't say that i would say yes well you're here and i'm glad that you did it though uh maybe if
00:30:38.320 you go back you would have other plans but i'm telling you the grass is always green on the
00:30:41.520 other side of the field my friend i love what you're doing here we knew it right when we walked
00:30:44.880 in i was like oh my goodness this is the like your online profile is great but when you walk into
00:30:52.080 this spot you're like this is a unique creature you've built i don't want to leave we were supposed
00:30:56.960 supposed to be out of here like half an hour 45 minutes ago and I refuse to tear this down
00:31:02.300 um what's the number one sold thing in the spot is it the charcuterie boards as a whole is it
00:31:07.580 just beer like what what's the wine it's wine eh yeah yeah Siouxites love their wine and they
00:31:13.160 know good wine that's why they come here that would be our number one seller so somebody's
00:31:17.300 just coming into the Sioux maybe there's cottage country maybe they've never been here before
00:31:20.420 they're passing through what is the main reason why they have to stop a brower's dancing just
00:31:24.680 of the lovely environment that you've built and the great people and the great menu do you have
00:31:28.440 anything else outside of that or i hit all three there you hit all three but i will personally
00:31:32.680 guarantee they will enjoy some wine here and every wine you like you can take a bottle home take a
00:31:37.560 bottle with you okay on your vacation tour across canada wherever it is so what i'm going to do is
00:31:42.280 i'm going to leave a bunch of stuff with you some merch right and if people come in and they say
00:31:46.120 hey you know i've seen tpl and uh they told us to come here and we're here we'll give them a little
00:31:51.160 Sault Ste. Marie bumper sticker, but come in and show your support for Josh and Browers Jansen.
00:31:56.360 This really is one of the coolest spots, not only in Sault Ste. Marie, but probably on all of Ontario.
00:32:03.000 This is a sleeping gem. Ladies and gentlemen, please get here. Josh, I can't thank you enough
00:32:08.200 for having TPL in the house. I can't wait to come back. Yeah, look forward to having you again.
00:32:12.640 Thanks, man. Thanks, Brady. Thank you, guys.
