00:00:00.000 We're here in London, Ontario, and we're talking about the housing market at Western.
00:00:04.520 That has nothing to do with the London Air Show, which is where we are right now.
00:00:17.040 Do you guys think that you will ever realistically be able to own a home?
00:00:21.360 Probably not without help from somebody else.
00:00:23.520 It's definitely achievable, but maybe not at this moment, I guess.
00:00:26.720 Probably not.
00:00:27.720 I don't think so in its current state.
00:00:29.060 I'm going to have to say I want a home, but it's really hard for me to get.
00:00:32.540 Currently, at this moment in time, no.
00:00:34.740 No.
00:00:37.040 Renting one, probably not owning one.
00:00:38.820 I think it's an achievable goal, but definitely not anywhere near the next 10, 15 years.
00:00:43.220 I don't think that that's something in the near future.
00:00:45.840 I do feel like it will take a lot of time.
00:00:48.640 Yeah, no, I think it's getting pretty out of hand right now, the job market, or like the housing.
00:00:52.600 How are you finding rent and student housing right now?
00:00:55.520 It was very difficult, especially finding something in my price range around here that was similar to the dorms.
00:01:02.320 I've been pretty fortunate. We had a decent time finding a student house.
00:01:05.800 I'm in fourth year now, but I know that it's gotten increasingly more expensive for a lot of people.
00:01:10.140 Not too difficult, but definitely not. I wouldn't say it was easy, but it wasn't hard.
00:01:14.680 It wasn't that hard for me.
00:01:16.020 I think the prices are a little bit ridiculous, and I think come second year,
00:01:19.980 I've already had people talk to me and I haven't even been here for a week about finding a house
00:01:25.080 for a second year. Do you see your ability to get like affordable housing and a home impacting your
00:01:31.860 ability to start a family in the near future? Yeah, 100%. Probably. I could see that happening,
00:01:37.740 yeah. Like probably, if I had to say like right now, probably. Yeah, I don't see myself having
00:01:42.600 kids until at least a lot later than my parents did in the generations previous. Why do you think
00:01:49.420 that the housing market and like housing in general is just so expensive right now.
00:01:53.480 Obviously there's a high demand for it. People need to live in a house and there's lots of
00:01:57.600 people in Canada, especially immigrants. Too many people want
00:02:01.340 houses and there's not enough space to build more.
00:02:05.320 I think there wasn't enough money allocated towards housing and subsidizing
00:02:09.420 housing for those individuals. There's a lot like Canada has a
00:02:13.180 high immigration rate. There's a lot of people coming to Canada from a lot of countries.
00:02:16.660 any people need places to stay.
00:02:18.880 I think there's definitely a high increase of more people coming into the population,
00:02:22.580 which in turn brings more students as well, which is short-term housing.
00:02:26.840 I could say it's possibly because of a lot of people coming in and buying houses.
00:02:30.180 Obviously, the housing market's raising in price by year.
00:02:33.960 It's just this economy.
00:02:35.260 It's like by each year, it's getting higher and higher.
00:02:38.500 It's just getting harder and harder as well.
00:02:40.340 Actually, I don't have any idea.
00:02:41.840 I don't know why it's so hard right now.
00:02:42.920 I guess maybe a lot more people come into the country too
00:02:46.900 that are also looking for houses.
00:02:48.320 You mentioned one of the big things being immigration.
00:02:51.340 That is one of the big things that is driving up housing costs
00:02:54.520 because we're bringing too many people in
00:02:56.300 and we're not building enough homes.
00:02:57.480 We're hardly building homes
00:02:58.660 because it's very unprofitable for businesses to operate
00:03:02.160 and builders are basically businesses,
00:03:04.720 so it's very difficult for them to operate in Canada and to build homes.
00:03:08.120 But even now, even today's housing prices,
00:03:10.960 if you look at what it was in 2005 in like Toronto they've gone up 350 percent from like 2005
00:03:18.100 in 20 years which is really like quite an insane number but then there's other things like the
00:03:24.640 fact that they can't actually build too many homes right now like so when I talk to some builders
00:03:28.580 they're building like a fifth of what they were even a few years ago because it's like it's just
00:03:33.860 been so bad they're getting approved so much less because this just the regulations are so bad it's
00:03:39.440 very unprofitable to do business in Canada. It's not just because of tariffs though. It's like the
00:03:43.520 whole business case in Canada is like not that great. And then another thing is actually money
00:03:48.000 laundering. So foreign entities with their dirty crime money that they've got, they want to clean
00:03:54.500 it. So they go and buy real estate and they'll go into a market and they'll pick a house and
00:03:59.900 they'll bid above asking price. And the homeowner will be like, well, yeah, of course, of course I'll
00:04:04.460 let you pay this much. Like, of course I'm taking your offer. Then they buy the home without a
00:04:08.920 mortgage because they pay out of pocket with this dirty money that they're cleaning. And then when
00:04:13.100 the banks and the insurance companies look at it, they're like, oh, well, they bought this home,
00:04:18.800 so-and-so, whoever they are, they bought this home without a mortgage. That must be the asking value.
00:04:25.100 That must be like the actual value of the home. So the whole price for all the homes in the
00:04:30.000 community go up because legal money laundering is actually driving up our homes, the price of our
00:04:34.940 homes here. There's those three factors contributing are actually causing a
00:04:38.720 really big housing crisis in Canada.
00:04:46.820 Huge shout out to Gerald Holland for giving us the idea for this video. Go
