00:00:00.000 There's this data that's going around when China went to the one-child policy
00:00:05.380 that maybe the population isn't as big as they claim it is.
00:00:09.120 I'm sure you've seen this, where the numbers are going around.
00:00:11.220 Oh, you know, we're at 1.4 billion.
00:00:13.680 We're at 1.3 billion.
00:00:14.960 And they're like, no, not necessarily.
00:00:16.560 You may be at six, seven.
00:00:17.820 One lady said 400 million.
00:00:19.460 Mathematically, it's impossible to be at 400 million.
00:00:21.900 But some of the numbers could say 800, 900 million.
00:00:24.440 What is your guesstimation of what China's population is today?
00:00:27.760 um look i live in beijing i visited china there are a lot of people in china i mean just right
00:00:36.240 the subway it's packed every single day just walk the streets they're packed all the time
00:00:41.360 you know and i travel a lot there are a lot of people um in china i can't tell you what the
00:00:46.560 exact statistics are there's probably some over counting because local governments tend to lie
00:00:51.400 because obviously like the more you people people you say you have the more government subsidies you
00:00:56.160 can get. So I imagine there's some population inflation, but I believe it's still overbilling
00:01:01.900 people. The issue in China is not actually population count. The problem in China is
00:01:08.200 twofold in that you have a rapidly aging population. You have young people who refuse to have kids.
00:01:14.140 I think it's possible in five years' time, China has the lowest fertility rate in the world.
00:01:18.640 Right now, it's South Korea at 0.8. China's about one. But I can easily see China overtaking South 0.99
00:01:25.580 korea in like five years time so that's the real issue facing china um china still has a lot of 0.96
00:01:31.520 people but the um but the demographic curve is gonna be a huge issue for china especially as
00:01:38.420 the population ages what why would they how does it benefit them to lie about the population
00:01:43.520 is there a benefit like if because why would who cares if you're at 800 million or if you're at 1.3
00:01:49.660 billion? Right. The issue in China is that local governments tend to lie all the time
00:01:59.460 because a lot of their promotions depend on the performance locally, right? So it's in their best
00:02:06.340 interest to inflate just not population statistics, but also economic performance.
00:02:11.680 So does Xi incentivize local governments to lie?
00:02:18.180 Is it more, hey, we got a safe face for the world.
00:02:21.780 The world cannot see that we're a declining country.
00:02:26.060 What is the – who is incentivizing who to lie with the data?
00:02:33.420 Right.
00:02:33.980 So China doesn't really care much about the world, but China is an enclosed, insular bureaucracy.
00:02:39.920 So the local governments are lying in order to get more funding from the central government, right?
00:02:44.720 So obviously, if you have more children, you can get more health care subsidies, more education subsidies from the federal government, especially if you're a poor province.
00:02:54.160 So that's the logic of lying.
00:02:56.260 And this happens, this is a very common practice in China, where if you are in Beijing, you just have to assume that all the information you're getting from local areas are just inflated information.
00:03:08.800 Got it. Okay.
00:03:10.220 But you don't think there's a reason,
00:03:12.000 there's a good or bad thing for the world
00:03:14.480 if all of a sudden we got the right data
00:03:16.500 that the population isn't 1.3 billion,
00:03:19.280 it's really only 800, 900 million.
00:03:21.620 Would that be an embarrassing moment for China?
00:03:23.760 Would Xi see that as an embarrassing moment?
00:03:25.340 Or no, it wouldn't be a big deal.
00:03:28.240 You know, there is concern in the central government.
00:03:33.460 And the reason why is that
00:03:36.020 China is very much a metric-based society. It's very Unitarian, right? So it's very focused on 0.98
00:03:41.820 economic growth. And what drives economic growth is population growth. So there's a real concern
00:03:46.220 that as the population declines over time, China's economy will stagnate. But personally,
00:03:50.740 I think that this may be in the long term a good thing for China because having over 1 billion
00:03:57.160 people is not necessarily a good thing. What it has led to ultimately is massive exploitation
00:04:02.900 over the people because when you have like too many people it's like free energy right so all
00:04:09.060 you have to do is basically um exploit them and that's what runs your economy but because you're
00:04:14.920 exploiting people that hampers innovation um that hampers political development so i think if china 0.95
00:04:21.220 were to face a population crisis this in the long term would be good for china society and 0.79
00:04:25.640 civilization in the long term you know this whole thing with vitamin and pbd podcast started with a
