Look, if you're a fan of basketball, if you're a fan of the NBA, if you're a fan of the Lakers,
00:00:20.840
obviously the greatest organization in the history of sports under Jerry Buss.
00:00:26.180
He had a player he drafted that ended up becoming five-time champion, Magic Johnson,
00:00:31.180
and who now, who now is the GM of the Lakers, brought on LeBron James.
00:00:35.660
I had a chance to sit down with him in front of a couple thousand people
00:00:38.100
and ask him a bunch of different questions about his upbringing to who he thinks is better, LeBron or Jordan.
00:00:43.380
It's going to be a very interesting way when he breaks down who his starting five would be
00:00:59.860
You know, in Iran, we don't have any basketball.
00:01:05.080
I fell in love with the purple and gold, and I saw how excited you were and what you did to the entire game.
00:01:09.760
But before going into the NBA and talking some of that stuff and leadership and Jerry Buss and all that,
00:01:13.860
why don't we just kind of go back and talk about your story.
00:01:23.880
Well, Patrick, I'm definitely from a big family.
00:01:27.480
And my family, my dad and my mother, my dad worked three jobs to make sure that he could take care of his family.
00:01:40.660
And, you know, we were just, we grew up poor, but there was a lot of love in the house.
00:01:49.440
And so, if I didn't get my grades, if I didn't do what I was supposed to do in school, then I couldn't play basketball.
00:01:56.980
I grew up in a sports family because my mom and dad both played sports, and then it got passed on to us.
00:02:06.040
Yeah. My dad played basketball, and he grew up in Mississippi.
00:02:10.600
My mother played, like, softball and all the sports, and she grew up in North Carolina.
00:02:16.020
And so, all my sisters played basketball, and they played softball like my mother.
00:02:21.440
And then my brothers, we all played basketball.
00:02:36.120
So, I'm glad he gave me that skill and that talent.
00:02:41.620
I want to save the world, and my personality, I get from my mother.
00:02:48.060
And all my sisters are teachers in the school system back in Michigan.
00:02:54.860
And then my brothers, they all followed my father working for General Motors for 30 years.
00:03:05.840
Yeah, I'm the youngest boy, and then I'm number seven overall.
00:03:12.020
You hate to be the youngest boy, because you had to go places that you didn't want to go,
00:03:17.340
and then you had to sit outside while they went and did their thing.
00:03:20.920
And then if I complained, they would smack me upside my head.
00:03:29.600
And so, now my mother got a lot of great-grands and grandchildren now, and it's beautiful.
00:03:39.360
Yeah, yeah, because all of us got kids, and now our kids are having kids, so it's beautiful.
00:03:48.140
Every Thanksgiving, she wants everybody in the house, so that means everybody's sleeping on top of each other.
00:03:59.240
So, it's a beautiful thing, and I love going home, back to Michigan, and taking my wife, Cookie, and our children.
00:04:06.280
Now, we've got two grandchildren, and taking them back as well.
00:04:10.160
Now, let me ask you, was it a very competitive family?
00:04:12.940
Was it, like, absolutely, because that's a lot of kids.
00:04:17.060
Was it, I'm faster, I throw better, I jump higher?
00:04:22.560
It was natural because, you know, with all of us playing sports, we challenged each other to everything.
00:04:28.380
We didn't have to really play with anybody else.
00:04:31.580
We had enough people to play with in the family.
00:04:34.720
So, you know, if somebody was running, we wanted to see who were the fastest.
00:04:38.840
If we were on the basketball court, how many shots could you make?
00:04:45.440
We would play five-on-five against other people, you know.
00:04:54.120
After church on Sunday, we would always go to the park and play with other families.
00:04:59.560
We would go, and we would play with other kids and had a wonderful time.
00:05:02.660
But the main thing that they gave us, too, was you can do anything in life you want.
00:05:12.520
Was it both mom and dad constantly saying that?
00:05:14.820
But you just got to educate yourself, and then you got to outwork people.
00:05:25.540
My sisters always wanted to be teachers, so they went in the education path.
00:05:31.660
But also, after basketball, I wanted to become a businessman.
00:05:37.120
It wasn't something that you hung around with Jerry Buss, and he said, I want to be a business guy.
00:05:46.060
Well, you know, it was a guy like you, Patrick, where I think all these people here, and especially
00:05:53.480
these young people, can look at you and say, hey, you have achieved.
00:06:01.340
And so it was two African-American businessmen in Lansing, Michigan, this small town.
00:06:06.920
And they own car dealerships and different businesses.
00:06:13.140
And so from there, I had these two role models right in front of me.
00:06:17.660
And I took it, and I asked them to teach me and become my mentors.
00:06:42.000
And, but they gave me my job, and then once I got to college, they said, okay, we're going
00:06:49.780
to really help you, prepare you for even when you make some money in the NBA, but also how
00:06:58.360
Because a lot of athletes, they go in rich, but come out broke, and that's very unfortunate.
00:07:07.700
And so, Magic, when did people know, or when did you know more importantly, like, you know
00:07:15.760
Like, I can play with these guys that are the competitors.
00:07:18.060
Like, when did that happen to you where you said, I can play at the next level?
00:07:21.320
I think that when you get to college and you said, okay, I'm playing against these pros
00:07:31.900
You know, but the main thing for me was first winning.
00:07:36.840
I won the third grade championship, fourth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade, seventh grade,
00:07:46.320
Once I got there, we won the state championship.
00:07:48.820
Michigan State had never won a championship, national championship.
00:07:57.920
And so then I get to the NBA because I played against pros in high school and in college.
00:08:08.860
Who was the one guy you faced where you said, you know what, if I can hang with this guy,
00:08:12.080
was there somebody you faced where you said I can hang?
00:08:23.040
And right now he's still living in San Antonio.
00:08:25.560
And he's the one who really gave me my confidence and also showed me how to improve my game.
00:08:36.540
You didn't play against him in college because he was before.
00:08:40.680
So in the summer when he would come home, he would allow us to play pickup games with him
00:08:50.060
You're going to get better and better playing against me.
00:08:52.200
And that's the guy who really helped all of us.
00:08:56.100
I mean, in high school or when you were coming up, was there a kid where you said,
00:09:04.700
Was it like a kid where you said, this guy can hang with me.
00:09:09.540
But maybe distractions, lack of work ethic, lack of discipline kind of completely took him off
00:09:16.540
Oh, yeah, because there was three or four guys like that who had just as much talent
00:09:21.540
but they didn't have the work ethic or they got into trouble and ended up in jail.
00:09:28.740
One guy was talented but ended up dead because he got into trouble.
00:09:33.760
So we've seen talented young people who make the wrong decisions or who think that, oh, I don't have to put the time in
00:09:52.080
Some people rely too much on their talent and they don't put the hard work or they don't have the work ethic to go along with that talent.
00:10:02.360
You have to be a hard worker and it will come back to you.
00:10:05.740
So you're in high school, you're playing ball, you have all these distractions.
00:10:12.640
Girls are chasing you left and right because you're the guy on campus.
00:10:16.120
How did you minimize these distractions and stay focused and not go do some of these other things that other guys were doing?
00:10:27.340
Look, growing up poor but I didn't have poor dreams.
00:10:38.680
So I knew the way I could change everything in my life was two things.
00:10:49.220
Hard work and the education could change everything for me.
00:10:53.940
So I put the time in and while they were partying or chasing girls or whatever, I was at the gym working out all the time.
00:11:05.740
My parents, my mother, she used to say, go take that boy some food because he's going to never come home for dinner.
00:11:14.600
So she used to have my brothers and sisters bring me, you know, food.
00:11:18.560
And then the last thing is, you know, you stay home.
00:11:21.360
I mean, you stay after school because we had practice.
00:11:23.740
And a lot of you have gone through this, I'm sure.
00:11:26.900
And you get home to the dinner table and six other, your other brothers and sisters have already eaten.
00:11:44.740
But I'll tell you what, I was dedicated to basketball.
00:11:49.980
And once I saw that I had some talent, I wanted to just take it as far as I could.
00:12:00.160
And even today, you know, I heard your speech before I came out.
00:12:12.520
Yes, it's going to be 100,000 like you talked about.
00:12:32.920
So that's exciting to hear you talk to all of you.
00:12:37.000
And you should want the same for yourself, too.
00:12:39.640
You know that, hey, if you're at this level, then you know, hey, I can go to this level.
00:12:50.140
Like, were you always like, because, Magic, I got to tell you this, man.
00:12:53.220
I watch your interviews when you go to Charles.
00:12:55.440
Stephen A. Smith, they invite you, all you guys.
00:13:03.340
When you make comments, you're the only guy that people just say, if Magic said it, it's right.
00:13:12.860
Like, were you always this charismatic, charming guy that people like?
00:13:19.700
Well, I think I was always, I had this personality, but I had to develop it over time.
00:13:30.660
You know, in the beginning, I just wanted to play.
00:13:35.960
But I had to hone my skills in terms of making sure that I could do an interview.
00:13:41.080
And that I would come across as a smart and intelligent man, right?
00:13:50.980
And I'm just happy that now I have the respect and that I'm not going to say anything stupid
00:14:00.420
or do anything stupid to hurt myself, my brand, or my family.
00:14:05.400
Because that's very important that I'm also trying to pave the way for my two sons and my daughter, right?
00:14:14.760
And so everything I do, I have to say, okay, what's going to be the consequences of what I say?
00:14:22.920
Before I push that button, send, okay, what's the pros and the cons?
00:14:29.300
Is this something that happened through a development process?
00:14:35.140
But also the discipline that I had as a basketball player, now I have the same discipline as a father, as a son, as a CEO.
00:14:47.720
I'm one of the most disciplined men you're going to ever meet.
00:15:01.080
Oh, my gosh, this magic, you're the greatest, all this other stuff.
00:15:03.780
So much can be fed in you for you to become extremely cocky.
00:15:09.640
Without him, you know, just as fast as he blessed me with it, he can take it away, right?
00:15:20.840
And so I'm not going to get caught up into being Hollywood.
00:15:25.600
I've always told my wife, we're not going to become Hollywood.
00:15:41.380
And I've always gone back and tried to help those who are less fortunate than myself.
00:15:47.040
And I've always been about the black and brown community and try to uplift them and give them job opportunities and education opportunities.
00:15:56.560
Because through the Magic Johnson Foundation, we give out scholarships and so I've just been blessed.
00:16:11.380
I'm just a guy who understood where he was going and who I was going with, which has been my wife for 25 years.
00:16:22.340
And, you know, there's plenty more for us to do.
00:16:27.920
And I just want you guys to know, both of us grew up poor.
00:16:40.280
And I started running after these pair of jeans.
00:16:43.780
And I heard you tell the story about your wife.
00:16:55.940
And you're a great example for the rest of us to know.
00:16:58.060
If a guy like you is staying humble, I mean, who else, you know, can go out there and get a little too cocky about it?
00:17:06.220
You've been winning in high school, you know, from fourth grade, fifth grade, junior high school, high school, Michigan State, Bird, the whole duo.
00:17:14.000
Now you go into the NBA and you start competing.
00:17:17.720
And you're one, I mean, right off the bat, Jerry Buss bet on you.
00:17:23.620
And the first game when you play against Kareem and you jump in, I'm on top of it.
00:17:27.620
So tell me what it was when you first, your first game, like when you first kind of knew you're a pro now, what was that like?
00:17:32.400
Well, my first game was in San Diego and, yeah, and it came down to three seconds left and we were down one.
00:17:45.180
And we threw the ball into Kareem and he hits a skyhook from the free throw line to win the game.
00:17:56.680
I'm running over and I jump in his arms and, you know, I'm choking him.
00:18:06.160
And so we get into the locker room and he says, young man, come here.
00:18:17.160
So now I got to look at him and said, OK, this is a veteran.
00:18:21.880
He's the greatest player right now, the best player in the league.
00:18:24.500
And I'm looking at him like, how am I going to respond?
00:18:27.700
So I said, well, this is my moment to tell him who I'm who I'm really am so that he can understand that I'm I wear my passion on my sleeve.
00:18:38.520
So I went right over to his locker and said, Kareem, if you hit the shot 81 more times like that, I'm going to jump in your arms 81 more times.
00:19:05.980
Yes, but we got along because slowly but surely, you know, he came and started showing some emotion.
00:19:13.680
And but I respected his space and he taught me a lot.
00:19:24.760
Well, see, when you enter the NBA, you don't know how to do things.
00:19:28.760
You came from college, so you really don't know how to be a pro yet.
00:19:32.140
So the veterans have to teach you, you know, how to practice, how to now you got all these planes and buses you have to go on and then all these hotels and all the things that coming at you and all these people who are now coming who want things from you.
00:19:51.300
So he taught me how to be a professional, how to look out for all those people who are trying to take my money.
00:19:57.740
And also, hey, you practice hard, you watch film and then make sure you get your rest.
00:20:07.780
And then always remember, give everything you got.
00:20:12.880
And then when the press come, always protect your teammates.
00:20:17.720
And so we see a lot of things that's going on now in the NBA or professional sport this week.
00:20:23.840
Where guys are, are conversations they would have in the locker room should stay in the locker room, but then they're tweeting it out and sending it out.
00:20:35.400
So, are you insinuating what LeBron James did this week wasn't the right thing?
00:20:41.280
Because that's what Barkley, all these guys got into it that he shouldn't have done it.
00:20:57.360
So, now, Kareem in the locker room, Kareem in the locker room, when you guys ran together,
00:21:03.620
was it you played your role, he played his role?
00:21:07.300
How did you guys handle friction in the locker room?
00:21:09.280
Because I mean, I'm sure there's going to be fights.
00:21:13.300
How did you guys hash it out in the locker room?
00:21:17.880
And the final say, of course, he was the captain of our team.
00:21:24.080
And he would always make sure that he had the final say.
00:21:28.160
But the good thing about our team, we didn't have that many problems.
00:21:33.960
And everybody was there to win and play their role.
00:21:40.100
They all got to play their role to help this company become successful and maintain being great.
00:21:51.120
Everybody has to play their role, go out, do their job.
00:21:54.200
And if you do that, yes, it's going to be dispute sometime.
00:21:58.240
Hey, I think I should be getting a couple more shots.
00:22:06.780
And I think that me being a point guard, I would always say, I missed you this time.
00:22:13.780
So I come back, you know, I'm in those little hot pants we used to wear.
00:22:21.820
I knew how to keep guys happy because I had the ball in my hands.
00:22:25.700
I knew how to make sure every guy got his shots and then keep them happy that way.
00:22:36.300
I said, James, what was it like running with you?
00:22:44.100
You know, people thought I was better than Jordan.
00:22:51.840
I'm coming into college, you know, and all of a sudden I'm playing on a team that I'm the third best player on the team.
00:22:57.000
So he says, at first I was having some problems.
00:22:59.820
And then all of a sudden I was playing the game just to be myself.
00:23:03.540
And Magic's trying to get us to go have dinner together, bring us all of us together.
00:23:06.340
And he really gave you a lot of credit because eventually he said the following in the interview.
00:23:11.680
He says, I eventually realized Magic was the better leader than me.
00:23:16.360
And once I got aligned in his leadership, we started winning.
00:23:19.620
So, you know, obviously James having played with a guy like that.
00:23:26.980
Every one of these guys just came out of high school.
00:23:32.580
Then they're coming on a team, they're number five.
00:23:37.200
I had to get them to buy into that you may be the fifth option, but that's an important role that you're playing.
00:23:48.820
No matter what your role is, it's an important role.
00:24:05.640
You have to make them feel like they're important.
00:24:08.620
And so I would say to James, hey, man, you was a man at North Carolina, no question about it.
00:24:15.060
But when I come down on this break, I'm looking for Kareem first.
00:24:23.900
And then if I got that lane and I'm shaking and baking and I see that seam and I can get through that seam to the basket, then I'm going to take the shot.
00:24:36.120
But if I can't take it and Kareem's not open, guess what?
00:24:59.060
And we just went to the finals nine times in 12 years.
00:25:18.660
Let me tell you when I see Riley what I think about.
00:25:21.980
When I see Riley, I see Riley being one decision away from being a mobster.
00:25:44.100
But the one thing good about Pat Riley was he taught us all how to come together as a family.
00:25:53.420
And if a guy was having a baby, he wanted everybody at the hospital.
00:25:57.920
If a guy was having a party at his home, everybody had to be there.
00:26:04.320
Now, would he call you and say, how come you weren't there?
00:26:13.200
Unless you had something very, very important, then you got to tell your teammate you got something very important.
00:26:19.020
But other than that, you had to show up and be there.
00:26:22.860
So a high standard type of a guy is what Riley was.
00:26:30.740
Every time we went somewhere, he wanted us to look the part and play the part.
00:26:37.940
Because I know Phil is always about Zen and all these books and yoga.
00:26:45.660
What he was about was he was a guy who said he demanded that we play the game the right way.
00:26:53.900
Then, and we were going to practice the game the right way.
00:26:57.780
So he was a man, if we play the game the right way, practice the game the right way, then the game becomes easier.
00:27:08.440
So he made me become today as a man and as a CEO, I'm a perfectionist because of him.
00:27:18.740
Just like today, you know, I landed here at seven o'clock.
00:27:28.320
I respect up the people's time and I do everything.
00:27:36.340
Oh, you know, he's about, hey, on time for him is like 15 minutes before or 30 minutes before.
00:27:43.980
Now, let me ask you, initially, when you work with a guy with that high standard that, like, you can't ever do enough, like, he always wants a little bit more.
00:28:00.400
Did they adjust or eventually they had to leave and he would work with somebody else?
00:28:16.160
And it carries over to you being a husband and it carries over to you being a father.
00:28:22.540
And one day you got to talk to your son or daughter.
00:28:29.280
So, if you're on point as a father, as a guy who goes to work every single day, guess what?
00:28:45.860
And he taught us that early and he was so right.
00:28:49.220
One time my son, he's on TV and he was going to do an interview.
00:29:20.040
We don't know if our kids are seeing what we're doing.
00:29:24.860
And man, I went into my room and I just broke down.
00:29:34.460
That he got a chance to see that, you know, I'm a professional.
00:29:38.700
And sometimes our kids, the neighbor or somebody else or the uncle or the son,
00:29:43.600
or the friend of the family can say the same thing you say, but they're going to listen
00:29:49.280
But I'm so happy that he's been watching and it was a great moment for us.
00:30:05.120
Requires 41 games per season to be on the run, not including preseason.
00:30:08.660
And in preseason, you're playing the Celtics eight times.
00:30:11.680
And then you have playoffs and you're in the playoffs every single year.
00:30:15.620
You have TV commitments, dream team, Olympics, interviews, all this other stuff.
00:30:24.140
Because everyone's going to make you feel guilty.
00:30:29.340
So, you know, she wrote the book, Believe in the Magic.
00:30:30.820
How did you manage that to say, babe, we're going to make this work and still raise kids?
00:30:34.620
Because everybody always asks me, balance in your life.
00:30:42.240
So, it was really interesting that you bring this point up.
00:30:47.000
You know, I told, my wife and I are best friends, so we talk about everything.
00:30:51.720
And I said, honey, I'm building this for us and our family.
00:31:05.840
Are you good with me have to be grinding and going on the road?
00:31:15.700
But what I want you to do is just promise me every big moment in their life, you be there.
00:31:24.400
So, every big play or recital or something that was going on, I made sure I was there.
00:31:32.640
And then last thing I did was I said, every weekend I knew I was going to work.
00:31:42.820
So, I said, okay, honey, I'm going to take you every Saturday.
00:31:46.140
We're going to go to Cold Stone's and we're going to have, you know, father and daughter time.
00:31:51.200
My sons, they like to just go and see every movie.
00:31:54.640
So, I would take her early and then I would take my son.
00:31:58.080
And then as a family, we would go to church every Sunday.
00:32:11.820
So, I tried to make sure I was still a good father as I'm building this business.
00:32:17.840
But at the same time, you must, both of you as the husband and wife, got to be on the same page.
00:32:24.080
And we were, and my kids, we have a close relationship.
00:32:37.380
I am so happy that they still like going on vacation with us.
00:32:45.980
As they get older, are they still want to hang out and be a part of the family?
00:33:01.060
But also, we're there to give them good advice.
00:33:04.280
So, I don't think it's no right way of doing it.
00:33:07.380
I think that if you sit down and talk to your partner and talk to your wife and explain to her what we're building together.
00:33:20.980
And these are the things that I have to do to get us there.
00:33:35.200
And she was very supportive of what you were doing.
00:33:43.600
But, you know, you ladies, you ladies got a look.
00:33:51.840
When you give us that look and we know what that look mean, man, when Cookie give me that look, that kills me.
00:34:12.140
And if, you know, you can be talking and all of a sudden that look means, okay, you just said enough.
00:34:26.740
You know, we love going to movies and concerts.
00:34:33.780
Some of our best time is just going to the park and just looking at each other and looking at kids playing or taking long walks along the beach or something like that.
00:34:48.080
And going to church and then go to brunch after that.
00:34:51.760
We just have, really, people think we live this life.
00:34:56.660
And, yes, we can have that, but we don't want that.
00:35:09.500
That's one of the reasons why the league respects you as much as they do.
00:35:12.940
So we were talking about Riley before you, you know, the family came up.
00:35:16.820
And I wanted to kind of find out a little bit more about the successful marriage you've had 25 years.
00:35:21.780
Coaching-wise, there's a lot of great coaches in the NBA.
00:35:26.700
I mean, I know this is a tough one, but who would you put at the top?
00:35:31.540
I think that you still got to go with Phil Jackson because he won a lot of championships.
00:35:36.700
I mean, people didn't have to remember this about Phil.
00:35:47.020
There were some coaches before Phil Jackson got there.
00:35:49.460
And they didn't get it done with that same talent.
00:35:52.860
Somebody was coaching the Bulls before Phil Jackson got there.
00:35:55.620
They didn't win the championship with Jordan, with Pippen.
00:36:23.960
I mean, I keep reading about Red, but what was his personality like?
00:36:31.320
He was a serious guy, but fun at the same time.
00:36:35.900
But he knew basketball frontwards and backwards.
00:36:55.160
But to do what San Antonio has been able to accomplish and do is just amazing.
00:37:05.300
Because the thing about them, they're the smartest team, right?
00:37:17.240
And he's going to come up with a game plan to go up against you.
00:37:21.740
I still think that Golden State will win, win it all.
00:37:25.220
You think Golden State is going to win it all this year?
00:37:27.380
Because we see how Kevin Durant has made the game so much easier for Steph Curry and Klay as well as Draymond.
00:37:48.260
It sounds like you're not saying Cleveland two.
00:37:49.280
Yeah, I think Cleveland right now is not playing good basketball.
00:37:57.080
Even though LeBron is the best player in the world, but they're not playing like they were last season.
00:38:03.220
And for whatever reason, they're having some struggles, and so they got to get back playing well.
00:38:09.500
But I would say, right now, they're probably playing the third best team right now.
00:38:18.720
Human specimen, 6'8", 260, jumps 40, whatever inches.
00:38:36.820
Yeah, I think he's just, to me, he's the best leader and floor leader we have.
00:38:47.900
They just don't have enough to beat San Antonio or Golden State.
00:38:54.780
From point guard, small shooting guard, small power?
00:39:01.560
No, you know, because I'm going to feel that point guard.
00:39:33.700
You think he's the greatest point guard of all time?
00:39:45.980
And so, and then I'm going to take Tim Duncan as my power forward.
00:40:01.100
Because my top five is close to yours except for one.
00:40:03.900
Kareem at his best, minus, you're obviously one.
00:40:23.880
He, they, when they have to change the game because of you,
00:40:32.540
And we have to remember, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won three national championships in a row in college.
00:40:40.600
And it could have been four if freshmen were allowed to play.
00:40:49.480
Shaq is probably the most dominant in terms of this physical presence as we've ever seen in the game of basketball.
00:41:01.720
And, matter of fact, we're, the Lakers are putting a statue in, in March of Shaq out in front of the state.
00:41:08.460
Did you see his reaction the first time he found out?
00:41:27.420
And he, he didn't want nobody to know he was that good.
00:41:29.740
You know, he's like, I'm going to do my job and I'm going home.
00:41:39.500
Because he, he played big in the big moments in the pressure situation.
00:41:56.520
But I'm going to do it better than anybody else.
00:41:59.340
And you don't have to put my name in the paper.
00:42:09.260
And so, I would put him at the power forward spot.
00:42:17.920
So, so, you played against, obviously, MJ many times.
00:42:22.380
You played with him from 84 when he came in until 91.
00:42:26.640
What made him, like, when was it, like, when he came in the league, did you know right off the bat?
00:42:30.880
Or did it take a few years for you to say, who is this guy?
00:42:49.320
Man, when he came down in 1991 and he took off with the right hand.
00:42:58.000
And in midair, we should have known we were in trouble.
00:43:05.380
And in midair, he switched to the left hand and spun it against the glass.
00:43:22.740
And then the greatest move I've seen, and I've been a part of probably three of the greatest moves.
00:43:29.820
Dr. J jumped out of bounds on us one time and he floated through air.
00:43:56.780
So Michael just said, I'm going to just stay up here in the air and wait until you go down.
00:44:06.040
He looked at him here, and then he looked at him there.
00:44:25.220
There's this whole debate with him and LeBron, right?
00:44:27.360
LeBron, you know, I'm chasing Mount Rushmore, all this other stuff.
00:44:45.620
Can he do anything, anything for someone like you who knows this game very, very well?
00:44:56.080
Can LeBron do anything to be known as the greatest of all time ahead of MJ?
00:45:01.000
At this point of his career, no one will we know what his resume, everything.
00:45:03.720
And he's kind of like, the numbers are not going to go any higher.
00:45:07.260
Well, he would probably have to win seven or eight, because right now, we have to remember
00:45:24.380
So, and he averaged like, in those Finals, he was averaging like 35 points a game.
00:45:39.460
So, if LeBron wins seven, I'm not a LeBron fan.
00:45:41.720
There's a guy sitting right there who's a diehard LeBron fan.
00:45:53.280
But if we play draft pick, greatest of all time, okay?
00:46:22.900
I think that besides his jumping ability, we are similar to what we did.
00:46:35.800
But when I think about trying to surpass Michael, and also the competition Michael had to beat to win.
00:46:48.620
So, but LeBron has done great things for the game today.
00:46:56.920
You know, he's complaining because he wants to win again.
00:47:02.500
But if I'm taking one guy today, the start, out of all the guys, I'm starting with LeBron.
00:47:15.200
So, let's talk a little bit about the one guy I'm always curious about is I am a big fan of Jerry Buss.
00:47:23.620
I think as an organizational leader, 33 years, 10 championships.
00:47:28.580
Think about a Steinburner, all these other guys.
00:47:36.080
You got ownership of the Lakers for playing for the Lakers.
00:47:41.460
They try to give it to other guys if they can't do it.
00:47:48.860
What made him so special that you guys didn't want to leave?
00:47:52.440
He made it fun to be part of the Lakers organization.
00:47:57.380
It wasn't just, Dr. Buss was a great owner because he always, what are you doing, young
00:48:07.760
Not just as a basketball player, but your life.
00:48:12.580
Are you making the right decisions in terms of investment?
00:48:18.160
And then if you had a goal like me, I had a goal to be a businessman.
00:48:21.000
He took me up under his wing and he mentored me.
00:48:25.060
He showed me the books and he opened the books up and said, hey.
00:48:36.300
And the only reason I'm a businessman today is because of Dr. Buss.
00:48:40.120
And so it's great that I showed the initiative, but he said, hey, I'm going to mentor you.
00:48:49.880
And then he knew how to treat those who worked for him.
00:48:56.700
Because he treated Kobe like a man and with respect.
00:49:01.020
And thanked him for bringing those championships to the Lakers.
00:49:06.820
Every single guy he treated with respect, whether you were the star or the last guy on the bench.
00:49:19.100
Before, it was the owners over here and the players over there.
00:49:36.980
I mean, you only play for the Lakers and so did Kobe.
00:49:53.200
It's funny, Patrick, because when Joe and Peter bought Golden State,
00:50:02.520
And I turned them down because I said, I'm a Laker.
00:50:07.380
This just happened four years ago, five years ago.
00:50:10.400
So West hadn't left yet or West was already gone?
00:50:15.340
So my friends who bought the Golden State Warriors wanted me to come with them.
00:50:19.580
And then Tom Gores, who bought the Detroit Pistons, wanted me to join his ownership team
00:50:36.740
I can't leave and go work for another organization because I wouldn't give them 150% because I'm
00:50:44.060
Now, what if someone comes out out of nowhere like a Guggenheim or somebody comes out and
00:50:48.260
say, look, we need new ownership, man, because I cannot, listen, I can say it.
00:50:54.620
I can't stand the existing guy on the decisions.
00:51:03.000
What if Guggenheim comes and says, look, we'll fund it.
00:51:13.800
If we can put a deal like that together, would you be open to it?
00:51:16.640
We're doing a business deal right now in front of everybody.
00:51:19.160
They're in the room, just so you know that right now.
00:51:29.980
And I just hope that they can get back to being competitive and going to the playoff.
00:51:36.980
And as I told, you know, Jeannie, Buss, and all of them, hey, anytime I can help, just
00:51:48.060
Because the moment I heard the 5% was gone, and then I heard, you know, the Asian guy apparently,
00:51:57.840
And then Jerry West, the moment you and Jerry were gone, I said, what's that?
00:52:00.720
Who's going to want to play for this organization?
00:52:04.020
If Jerry was there, you were there, he would be interested in that.
00:52:07.260
So it completely threw me off as a fan a little bit.
00:52:10.240
We haven't been able to sign a superstar, so that's been our problem.
00:52:17.560
Didn't Jeannie just have a conversation with you recently?
00:52:30.280
I was at a charity event with her, and she went the entire time in tears about you.
00:52:41.280
And so her father wanted to make sure that, actually, we're around the same age,
00:52:49.080
And that's why she's so great at business, because her father had her with him everywhere.
00:52:55.480
And she went to college, and he made sure that when he was going to die,
00:53:05.800
And that's why she's doing great on the business side.
00:53:08.560
And so it's been really wonderful to watch her continue on her father's legacy
00:53:20.540
because I wanted to see if there's anything going on with your involvement,
00:53:24.620
But look, to finish up, we've got five minutes here to respect your time.
00:53:30.920
So you go from playing a game that you can do with your eyes closed, basketball, right?
00:53:45.340
Now you have to go from this game, you know, to entrepreneurship.
00:53:49.860
What is your biggest challenge you faced when you made that transition?
00:53:53.100
Well, first of all, I had to admit to myself I didn't know business.
00:54:01.020
See, self-evaluation is the hardest thing we have to do because you have to be honest with yourself.
00:54:09.760
What's your strength and what's your weaknesses?
00:54:19.380
I knew, you know, how to play the point guard position, on and on and on.
00:54:23.760
But I didn't know business, so I had to get me some mentors to help me along the way.
00:54:30.340
And I sat down with anybody who would sit down with me, right, picking their brains.
00:54:35.960
A lot of CEOs, a lot of presidents of companies.
00:54:38.580
So I'm writing down information on paper but also up here.
00:54:42.420
So then I said, okay, where do I want to invest my money?
00:54:53.040
So I did my homework and research and said, man, we're the number one group of people going to the movies,
00:55:00.920
We had to drive outside our community just to go to the movies.
00:55:22.720
And the first theater right there in Los Angeles in South Central came in the top 10 highest grossing theaters in the nation in my first year.
00:55:45.300
So, I'm going to make sure I have strawberry, orange, grape, fruit punch.
00:56:00.060
Then, I was the first theater to have jalapeno peppers.
00:56:23.480
So, once you know your customer, then you have to not deliver.
00:56:31.520
And then you'll get the retention that you're looking for.
00:56:44.320
And everything changed to fit the urban consumer.
00:56:48.800
So, now, when an urban consumer walks in and says, this is my place, this is where they're going to come all the time.
00:56:58.100
And so, sure enough, we had everything rolling.
00:57:07.340
And then I got bowed and knocked on a guy named Howard Schultz door for Starbucks.
00:57:13.780
And I said, hey, minorities, we like coffee, too.
00:57:21.640
So, he was like, I said, the growth of your business has to be through urban America because you built out suburban America.
00:57:41.560
And so, we started building Starbucks in the inner cities.
00:58:09.400
In the headlines of the LA Times, no way minorities would pay $3 for a cup of coffee.
00:58:20.560
So, I had to take the scones out of my Starbucks.
00:58:50.940
And then I had to take out that elevator music that they play in all the other suburban stores.
00:59:03.340
So, I put in, you know, Lionel Richie and Prince and Michael Jackson.
00:59:09.420
So, while you're in the Starbucks, you got your hand, your toe tapping, you got your drink going.
00:59:16.160
And that's, and then the last thing it did, it gave us a place to meet our friends and family.
00:59:23.800
See, we didn't have meeting places in urban America where I can say, hey, man, meet me, or hey, meet me.
00:59:29.480
And that place, that store, that Starbucks store became a meeting place for people who lived in urban America.
00:59:39.840
And I sold them all back to Starbucks, and it was an amazing run.
00:59:47.620
We built, we were supposed to build 125 in 10 years, but because we were making so much money, we built them all in six years.
00:59:55.780
In 40 different cities, and it was really wonderful.
01:00:01.400
And what was really good, and I want you guys to understand this, was I put a lot of minorities to work, not just in the stores, but they became district managers, where you can make a lot of money, and area managers, and on and on and on.
01:00:20.780
And it was really unique and special for me to see minorities in these management positions, and that business really take off.
01:00:30.260
You know, do you own the movie theater right next to that Sizzlers?
01:00:33.840
Is there a Sizzler right next to the movie theater?
01:00:36.360
So, that's the first time ever in my life I spoke in front of an audience of 30 is at that Sizzler.
01:00:42.880
It's the first time in my life I spoke at that Sizzler.
01:00:49.000
I was working at Valley Total Fitness right off of Victory in Overland, and Sony was right there.
01:00:54.100
So, I used to always be in that entire cover city.
01:00:57.420
Hey, man, first of all, you know, you have no idea how much this means to me and our organization to have you come out here and spend an hour with us.
01:01:07.560
And how many different opportunities you got for you to do that.
01:01:11.560
And we think the world of you in a major way, and I have a gift for you.
01:01:15.600
Guys, I was trying to think about what gift to get this guy.
01:01:34.880
So, first one, look, you know, we like to go around wearing this shirt called I'm an Entrepreneur,
01:01:41.520
but we made a limited edition I'm an Entrepreneur shirt.
01:01:44.600
Your size with the purple and gold that says I'm an entrepreneur.
01:01:49.160
Hopefully, you support this and appreciate that.
01:01:51.620
And then I heard the fact that you like to run.
01:01:58.940
So, we got you the most, you know, the highest quality one of these running watches.
01:02:06.660
If you don't have one, I hope you can enjoy this yourself.
01:02:18.800
Thank you for coming out and spending some time with us.
01:02:24.080
And by the way, if you haven't already subscribed to Valuetainment on iTunes, please do so.
01:02:31.740
And if you have any questions for me that you may have, you can always find me on Snapchat,
01:02:39.660
And I actually do respond back when you snap me or send me a message on Instagram.
