00:00:00.960 30 seconds, one time for the underdog, ignition sequence start, let me see you put em up, reach
00:00:09.220 the sky, turn the stars up above, cause it's one time for the underdog, one time for the
00:00:16.220 underdog.
00:00:17.360 I'm Patrick Bedevio, host of ITEM, and today we're going to talk about what you can do
00:00:20.580 to choose the right mentor.
00:00:22.000 Prior to me getting into this, I want you to think about this.
00:00:24.780 There are a lot of people on YouTube that do well because they're attractive.
00:00:27.640 There are some that do well because they're very good at telling stories, they're great
00:00:30.940 speakers.
00:00:31.640 There are some that do well that are very, very funny, incredible personalities, and all
00:00:36.600 of those things can be attractive, but just like you and I get judged on friends that we
00:00:41.040 have, you and I will get judged on relationships we have, you get judged on anything you do.
00:00:46.440 You're also going to get judged based on the experts you choose because it comes down to
00:00:50.800 how well you process what makes someone an expert.
00:00:53.540 So let's get right into it.
00:00:55.080 So qualifications of an expert.
00:00:56.960 I have a theory.
00:00:58.040 I call this the T-theory.
00:01:00.400 Let me explain to you what it means.
00:01:01.480 First of all, there are experts, but there are three areas that determine someone to become
00:01:06.080 an expert.
00:01:06.980 One is theory, okay?
00:01:09.840 And theory is what?
00:01:11.200 Someone who is very well read, somebody who has done lots of research on a topic, somebody
00:01:15.960 who has, you know, studied a topic, someone who has investigated a topic, and so they have
00:01:22.480 their own philosophies, they have their own ideas, but it's purely an expert based on theories
00:01:28.000 that they have.
00:01:29.140 There are a lot of those online.
00:01:30.980 I consider that the lowest level of an expert.
00:01:33.480 The second one is experience, okay?
00:01:36.080 And let me explain to you what experience is.
00:01:38.520 Experience to me is someone who has worked under somebody who ran a real estate business, and
00:01:45.640 they did very well.
00:01:46.700 So this person didn't necessarily sell real estate, but the person selling real estate
00:01:51.640 is very successful.
00:01:52.480 He was so close to her, so he learned from her through experience and watching it happen.
00:01:59.180 That is the second highest level of an expert, because you can talk to them and say, hey,
00:02:02.800 how was it working with Mary?
00:02:04.420 Hey, how was it working with Bob?
00:02:06.500 And through experience, he could tell you about the successful traits of Mary, Bob, or whoever
00:02:11.840 the successful real estate person, entrepreneur is, right?
00:02:14.560 That's the second highest level.
00:02:15.680 The third highest level of an expert is somebody that is through application.
00:02:22.640 This is the highest level of expertise.
00:02:25.760 Let me explain what this is.
00:02:27.340 This is someone you go and talk to, and you say, hey, when you fought Buster Douglas, how
00:02:34.040 was it?
00:02:35.280 When you fought Mike Tyson, what did you have to look for when you were fighting Mike Tyson?
00:02:40.140 When you started your business, what were some pitfalls?
00:02:43.180 When you had a partner that didn't work out, well, how did you create the exit strategy
00:02:47.800 of the partner?
00:02:49.120 When you were going through a breakup in your personal life, and you were still running your
00:02:53.220 business, how did you manage yourself to not go crazy and still keep your business together?
00:02:57.540 That's the highest level, because they're talking about application on what they did,
00:03:02.360 right?
00:03:02.640 On what they did.
00:03:03.580 They're sharing that with you.
00:03:05.080 So how do you qualify someone to become an expert?
00:03:07.260 Look, there are theory people.
00:03:09.500 YouTube is filled with people that are theory type of experts.
00:03:13.180 There are experienced people.
00:03:15.300 I watched XYZ do XYZ, but I've never done it.
00:03:19.380 That's still a good expert to go through.
00:03:21.480 Then you have the application.
00:03:22.960 The trifecta of an expert, if you're lucky enough to find somebody who's a trifecta, is
00:03:28.100 someone who has experience with all three.
00:03:30.240 Every one of these.
00:03:31.500 Someone who has experience with theory, because they've studied the subject.
00:03:34.480 Someone who has had the experience of watching other people who are very good at it do it.
00:03:37.520 And someone who has applied the things that they learned for themselves in a business.
00:03:42.760 If you can find that person, that's the real expert.
00:03:44.900 Now, what is the most important question to ask of somebody who calls themselves an expert?
00:03:50.340 Here's what the question is.
00:03:51.580 How did you make your money?
00:03:54.740 How did you make your money?
00:03:55.960 Why is that so important?
00:03:57.040 Well, because nowadays, a lot of online experts will talk about a subject, and they never made
00:04:02.100 the money in that subject.
00:04:03.000 They're just talking about that subject because they read a lot of books about it.
00:04:05.580 Theory.
00:04:06.440 Or they had somebody who did that, and they talk about it.
00:04:08.660 Right?
00:04:09.180 How did you make your money?
00:04:10.640 And I actually want to know how you made your money.
00:04:12.580 I actually really want to know how you made your money.
00:04:14.300 Because nowadays, if somebody says, you know, I made my money this way, and it's not online,
00:04:18.380 but they're calling themselves a multi-millionaire, but no one knows about it online, I have a
00:04:22.260 problem with that.
00:04:23.060 You know, I have a problem with that.
00:04:24.060 I remember one time I went to, what's that one book?
00:04:27.320 Who's the TEDx speaker?
00:04:28.420 What is the guy's name?
00:04:29.140 Simon Sinek.
00:04:30.460 I went up to Simon Sinek, and I really like his book.
00:04:33.180 I think it's a great book.
00:04:34.520 And I went up to him, and I said, hey, Simon, how did you make your money?
00:04:37.980 And his answer was a general answer.
00:04:39.940 I said, what did you do to make your money?
00:04:42.180 And there was no answer on how he made his money.
00:04:45.300 And that made me look at his book, great book.
00:04:48.220 But I never looked at him as a trifecta expert after that.
00:04:51.320 I just saw him as a good speaker who promoted his book well, and he had a great message that
00:04:54.700 got to the world.
00:04:55.680 He's a theory and an experience expert.
00:04:59.040 He's not an application necessarily expert at the highest level.
00:05:03.040 So if you want me to get a little bit more specific with this, I'll give you an example
00:05:06.020 of sports.
00:05:06.480 In the world of NBA, you have the play-by-play commentator, and you have the analyst.
00:05:11.640 If you look at TNT, they have Ernie Johnson, who's a great commentator, play-by-play.
00:05:17.880 But the analyst is Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, Shaq.
00:05:22.160 They're the experts because of application and experience and theory.
00:05:27.860 They're the trifecta experts that everybody wants to hear from.
00:05:31.460 We like to hear their advice.
00:05:33.420 When the movie Lone Survivor was shot with Mark Wahlberg, Mark Wahlberg did the story
00:05:38.680 of the lone survivor because he went and met him, and the lone survivor told them what
00:05:43.440 it is to do their job, the pain, the experience, the workout, because Mark Wahlberg wanted to
00:05:48.800 find out from the guy who applied what he knows and the experience and the theory so he can get
00:05:53.260 into the role, the part, the best to his abilities.
00:05:55.720 And that's why so many people love the movie Lone Survivor.
00:05:58.540 So, you know, again, going back to it, three types of expert theory, education, experience,
00:06:05.060 application, highest level is the trifecta.
00:06:08.440 And the most important question to ask is, how did you make your money?
00:06:11.620 So if you're an expert watching this, you may be the expert watching this, okay?
00:06:14.820 So you're watching this saying, wait a minute, I kind of don't like this because, you know,
00:06:18.560 people are coming up to me and this, what do I do now?
00:06:20.340 Do I change my story?
00:06:21.620 No.
00:06:22.640 Just be clear and real about what type of an expert you are because today in the world
00:06:27.880 of marketing, everyone's going to find out.
00:06:30.400 If you haven't made money as an expert in that specific subject, and the more real you
00:06:35.160 are, the more real customers you're going to get, the more you try to kind of make up
00:06:39.840 stuff, eventually everybody finds that.
00:06:41.400 Then it really backfires and you definitely don't want to have that type of a reputation
00:06:44.540 nowadays as an online expert.
00:06:46.940 So with that being said, ask the right question.
00:06:49.280 Look for some Trifecta mentors and make sure when you find those Trifecta experts, you
00:06:53.560 keep them very, very close.
00:06:54.900 Thanks everybody for listening.
