00:00:00.980 30 seconds, one time for the underdog, ignition sequence start, let me see you put em up, reach
00:00:09.220 the sky, touch the stars up above, cause it's one time for the underdog, one time for the
00:00:16.200 underdog.
00:00:17.260 I'm Patrick Goodby, your host of Value Team, and today I'm going to speak to you about
00:00:20.160 the price of leadership.
00:00:21.580 My father challenged me to subscribe to leadership, because my father wanted to be a leader in
00:00:27.560 everything that he ever touched.
00:00:28.460 Everybody who knows my father, he's a leader, and I wanted to be a leader, is what I wanted
00:00:32.880 to be.
00:00:33.260 I wanted to lead, because in my life, I haven't seen something more rewarding than being considered
00:00:38.480 a leader.
00:00:38.900 Somebody said, well, how about being a parent?
00:00:40.320 Having a kid is more rewarding.
00:00:41.440 No.
00:00:42.060 Being a parent that leads your kid is rewarding, because you're a leader.
00:00:45.420 That's what's rewarding.
00:00:47.460 Anybody can go make a baby, almost anybody can, but leading that family is what's rewarding.
00:00:52.780 So what is the basic 50% rule of leadership?
00:00:56.300 It's very simple for me.
00:00:57.120 Here's what it is.
00:00:57.840 Almost every one of us wants to be pleasing everybody and have everybody like us, but
00:01:02.200 that's not what leaders can ever do.
00:01:03.680 Anybody can ever do that.
00:01:05.400 If 100% of the world likes you, you're not a leader.
00:01:10.500 You're probably a newborn baby, because it's impossible to have 100% of people like you.
00:01:15.940 But there are a lot of adults that have most people like them, because they're afraid to
00:01:20.060 rub people the wrong way.
00:01:21.120 If 100% of people don't like you, you're a jerk.
00:01:25.520 So you're either a person that's wanting to please everybody, or you're simply a jerk.
00:01:30.740 You're not good with people.
00:01:31.860 No one likes you.
00:01:32.800 They just tolerate you, right?
00:01:34.840 A leader, whether you're Ayn Rand, who writes a book, Atlas Shrack, 50% cannot stand it, 50%
00:01:41.580 loves it.
00:01:42.440 If you're Chris Matthews, if you're Tip O'Neill, or you're Ronald Reagan, most people don't like you.
00:01:48.500 Some people do like you.
00:01:49.340 If you're Michael Jordan, it doesn't matter who you are.
00:01:52.560 The leader is generally around the 50% number.
00:01:56.420 50% will like you.
00:01:58.020 50% will not like you.
00:01:59.720 You're a leader.
00:02:00.980 So a Michael Jordan who came to the Bulls, and all of a sudden, one year, they draft Horace
00:02:05.720 Grant and Scottie Pippen, who are coming up as rookies, and this guy wants to win a championship.
00:02:09.120 They're just glad to be in the NBA.
00:02:10.300 They're partying, and he's pushing them.
00:02:12.540 He's kicking their butt.
00:02:13.420 They're not liking them.
00:02:14.660 They're partying together, Horace and Scottie, always talking behind his back.
00:02:18.360 But there was one person who completely understood what this guy was doing.
00:02:22.180 And that was Phil Jackson, because Phil understood the only leader on his team is a guy named
00:02:26.620 Michael Jordan.
00:02:27.760 Phil pushed everybody.
00:02:29.740 So eventually, Scottie figured it out, because he wanted to win a championship, so did Scottie.
00:02:34.400 Scottie subscribed.
00:02:35.840 Phil subscribed.
00:02:36.760 The ownership subscribed.
00:02:38.120 Then Horace subscribed.
00:02:39.540 Then they won championships.
00:02:41.360 But still, half of the team, the new players that were coming, Tony Kukoc, you know, Winnington,
00:02:46.080 all these other guys that were coming, they didn't like Jordan, because Jordan drove everybody.
00:02:50.700 So you'll generally know who the leaders are in any organization, because if in an organization,
00:02:56.960 somebody, make a list of people in any organization, say, this person everybody likes in a company.
00:03:02.000 Believe it or not, that person's not a leader.
00:03:04.520 That person's somebody that wants everybody to be pleased for other reasons.
00:03:08.580 And you say, this person, half the group loves them, half the group doesn't like them.
00:03:11.660 That's the leader of the group, because they challenge everybody to improve.
00:03:16.580 And you need to make a decision yourself, whether you want to be a leader, or you want
00:03:20.120 to be a people pleaser, or you want to be a jerk.
00:03:22.100 It doesn't matter.
00:03:22.720 The choice is yours, but leadership, 50% rule, is what you'll be dealing with for the rest
00:03:28.280 of your life.
00:03:28.760 Thanks, everybody, for listening.

00:03:41.620 Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube.
