Summary

The 80/20 rule is the difference between leaders and leaners in your organization. Leadership is not necessarily the stuff you see on the outside, it's what you do behind the scenes. And a leader is constantly striving to be in the 80% and a leaner is constantly trying to be the 1%.

00:00:01.000 30 seconds. One time for the underdog. Ignition sequence start. Let me see you put them up. Reach the sky, turn the stars up above. Cause it's one time for the underdog. One time for the underdog.
00:00:17.300 I'm Patrick Bedewe, host of Value Team, and today I'm going to share with you the most valuable asset you have in your organization.
00:00:22.100 Today I want to talk to you about one of the most frustrating things in leading an organization. If you're a leader yourself, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
00:00:29.400 You know, in anywhere you look at, in any business, you'll always get two different kinds of people, leaners and leaders.
00:00:36.620 And have you ever met somebody before where you meet with them for the first time and you walk away saying,
00:00:41.400 This person is so impressive. I am so impressed with this person. They are so amazing. They can do so well.
00:00:48.700 They can do such great things. And then you ask yourself the real question,
00:00:52.600 But how come they haven't for, they've been in a workforce for 10 years, 20 years, 30 years.
00:00:56.600 Are they just a good talker? Are they just good at selling themselves? But what is it?
00:01:00.980 Well, you know, leadership is something that very few people actually see the work of a leader.
00:01:06.160 A leader is not necessarily the stuff you see on, you know, out there when everybody's recognizing them.
00:01:11.640 They're getting a trophy. Leadership is really what you do behind the scenes.
00:01:14.220 And a lot of times, behind the scenes, leaders know the difference between leaders and leaners.
00:01:20.220 Okay, there's a lot of people, majority of any organization you're in, majority of them are leaners.
00:01:25.480 And a few of the people in the organization are leaders.
00:01:28.460 And a lot of times, these leaders inspire the leaners to eventually become leaders.
00:01:31.880 Every leader was once a leaner, leading on a leader, leaning on a leader to learn so they can duplicate it.
00:01:36.980 But I'll tell you, every time I hire somebody and I bring somebody and I give them a leadership position in the company,
00:01:41.280 anything I've done over the years when I hire somebody,
00:01:43.040 and I put them in a position where they're leading, I tell them, I say, listen, you are the CEO of this department.
00:01:48.640 I'm expecting you to lead this department.
00:01:50.920 I'm expecting you to perform in this department.
00:01:53.260 I believe you can pull it off, but I want to see you win in this department.
00:01:56.240 You're the CEO of the department, so I want you to lead.
00:01:58.500 I don't want you to lean on everybody all the time waiting for orders to be given.
00:02:01.760 I want you to use your creative thoughts to create things in this department.
00:02:05.660 That's what I want to see with you.
00:02:06.680 And a lot of times what happens to people is they'll look at this and they'll say, well, I'm a leader because I'm in the 20 percentile.
00:02:13.040 Remember this.
00:02:14.140 So this is a tricky thing I'm going to tell you.
00:02:15.760 The 80-20 rule, you know how they say 80 percent and then 20 percent are leaders?
00:02:19.200 Well, once you become the 20 percent, a lot of people who are in the 20 percent of that 100 percent, they stay in that 20 percent.
00:02:25.180 But a leader of that 20 percent says, well, wait a minute.
00:02:27.520 Am I the 80 percent of that 20 percent or am I the 20 percent of that 20 percent?
00:02:32.340 Then that 20 percent of people, there is a 20 percent of that 20 percent.
00:02:35.980 Then when they lead to the next level, even in that small group, there are people that lean on others because everybody's a leader.
00:02:42.680 Then that 20 percent says, am I the 20 percent of that 20 percent or the 80 percent of that 20 percent?
00:02:47.660 I know it's kind of confusing, but a leader is striving constantly to move up and to be the 20 percent, to be the 1 percent,
00:02:55.200 to move up to be the smaller leader that's taking on more responsibility from the top,
00:03:00.640 to move more leadership positions from the top.
00:03:03.080 So eventually he gets to the top and the person above him says, you know what?
00:03:06.460 You can do a better job than I am.
00:03:07.900 You take over my position because you've been leading for such a long time.
00:03:10.820 I'm proud of you.
00:03:12.220 This position is now yours.
00:03:13.660 But it will only happen to those that have made a decision and committed to leading, not constantly leaning.
00:03:21.880 There is a big difference.
00:03:23.940 When you look at your organization and your people you think about, when you mark them down,
00:03:28.620 it's very good exercise to write and say, this guy's a leaner.
00:03:31.760 He seems like a leader.
00:03:32.880 Everybody thinks he's a leader, but he's truly a leaner.
00:03:35.740 He is still leaning.
00:03:37.000 When is this guy going to start leading?
00:03:38.740 My challenge to you is, in every single category of 80-20 you get to, you be the leader of the 20 percent,
00:03:47.080 not the leaner in the 80 percent.
00:03:49.020 Thanks everybody for listening.
