00:00:00.000 30 seconds. One time for the underdog. Ignition sequence start. Let me see you put them up. Reach the sky, turn the stars up above. Cause it's one time for the underdog. One time for the underdog.
00:00:17.300 I'm Patrick Bedevi, your host of ITIM, and today we're going to talk about how to measure success. Yes, how can you measure success? Are you a success or not? And if yes, how do you measure it?
00:00:27.280 Doug asks me, Pat, how do you measure success? Look, the way I view success may be slightly different. Let me explain to you what I mean by this.
00:00:34.260 You see, in sports, there's a lot of people that they call triathletes. Or this person like Deion Sanders played football and baseball.
00:00:43.960 Brian Jordan, you know, football and baseball. Bo Jackson, same. You know, football and baseball.
00:00:49.220 And you know, Mahomes used to be a great pitcher, 96 mile hour pitch, and he's a great quarterback, MVP last year.
00:00:54.880 In KC and in Hollywood, they call him triple threat. Justin Timberlake can dance and sing and act.
00:01:01.620 J-Lo, all three. Beyonce, all three. All these people, you're like, oh my gosh, these are triple threats in baseball.
00:01:08.780 They say triple crown, RBI, hits, you know, home runs, Ted Williams type of person.
00:01:14.620 And these are what you call people that are great at three different things or more, right?
00:01:20.560 In life, if you look at Hollywood, a Dwayne Johnson may not be a triple threat because he's never done a music video.
00:01:29.080 Well, he actually did with Moana, right? He was singing in that movie.
00:01:32.920 But dancing, maybe he can do his dancing that he does, the Hawaiian stuff that he does.
00:01:37.020 But you know what? He's a wrestler, and he went to the top in wrestling.
00:01:40.020 He went to the top with his body.
00:01:41.300 If you look at his physique, he's got an incredible physique.
00:01:43.880 People look at his body. He's got a contract with Under Armour.
00:01:46.100 Every other week, he's coming out with new products, number one selling product on Under Armour.
00:01:50.220 He's their number one promoter around the world, number one moneymaker on Hollywood,
00:01:54.460 $120-some million in a year, and he's doing businesses here in China.
00:01:58.500 They say 56% of the world recognizes his face.
00:02:01.360 He's number one in the world by recognizing his face.
00:02:03.580 How did this happen? He's a multiple threat.
00:02:05.720 So now let's come to you. Let's talk about you here.
00:02:08.160 So what does this mean to you?
00:02:09.120 Okay. You ever meet people who have great marriages, but they see somebody who is worth a lot of money,
00:02:17.400 but they try to, you know, kind of undermine that person in the area they failed in
00:02:23.260 and kind of glorify themselves in the area they succeed in.
00:02:26.600 Sometimes we all tend to do this because we're insecure with ourselves, right?
00:02:30.560 You think about it, like, oh my gosh, look at that guy. Look at me, right?
00:02:34.580 If you're fully engaged in your own life winning, you don't do a lot of that.
00:02:38.420 My biggest concern when you look at this is when you explain how do you measure success,
00:02:43.380 there are a lot of people that are very successful in their marriages.
00:02:45.760 You look at them, think about the most successful person you know that's been happily married to his wife and her husband,
00:02:50.000 and they've been married for 42 years. Happily.
00:02:52.480 You look at them, you're like, you guys ought to write a book together.
00:02:55.280 How are you this happy together?
00:02:57.320 We've been happy. We had a formula. Here's what we follow. We always did this.
00:03:01.360 How'd you do it? But they're broke. But they're happily married, right?
00:03:04.800 And you look at some Marios, and you say, wow, look at this person here.
00:03:08.980 You know, he's made so much money for himself. Most successful person you know.
00:03:12.340 Look at his physique. What a body. He's in shape. He does Iron Man. Unbelievable.
00:03:17.040 Look at the amount of books this person writes.
00:03:19.020 This person's incredible with their work and their career.
00:03:22.000 They're the best at their work. Oh my gosh, he's the best graphic designer.
00:03:25.340 The best writer. The best copywriter. The best journalist.
00:03:29.660 The best person in sports and whatever they do.
00:03:32.100 The best backgammon player. The best chess player.
00:03:35.220 Wow, this guy's earned success in his life.
00:03:37.660 He's a successful person, right?
00:03:39.700 This other person, every time I want to get a hold of anybody, I just call this guy.
00:03:43.060 He's got access to everybody on his phone.
00:03:44.860 His Rolodex is powerful.
00:03:46.480 You know, this other person's a great hedge fund manager.
00:03:48.700 What a successful guy, right?
00:03:50.500 So you look at all this stuff.
00:03:51.520 Then for you, the reason why I say success is multidimensional is because of you.
00:03:55.740 A lot of times, when I see my peers or people that I know or people in the marketplace,
00:04:00.420 value-tainers when they talk to me, they typically measure their own success to others' failures.
00:04:06.860 Look how happily married I've been.
00:04:08.680 Look how miserable this guy's been.
00:04:10.940 Look how rich I am.
00:04:12.060 Look how poor he is.
00:04:13.460 Look my body.
00:04:14.480 Look how out of shape this guy is, right?
00:04:15.940 Instead, for you, my challenge to you is becoming a triple threat, if not more.
00:04:23.860 Some think you can't have a great marriage and be in shape and have kids and win in business
00:04:29.440 and do this and do that.
00:04:31.420 All of that stuff is said by people that simply don't want to make an effort.
00:04:35.540 Now watch this.
00:04:36.940 You can't be great at 50 different things.
00:04:39.380 It's not going to happen.
00:04:40.140 We were having a conversation earlier today because the book that I'm getting ready to publish,
00:04:44.000 we are this close, I am so excited about the book.
00:04:47.400 I cannot tell you how excited.
00:04:48.900 This is the first time with the book we've been working on for three years, a business book,
00:04:52.060 where I look and I say, I can't wait to sell this book and share it with everybody.
00:04:55.640 The moment people read, they're going to say, this is going to help me out.
00:04:58.680 There was a word I had a hard time with.
00:05:00.540 I said, I'm not comfortable with this word.
00:05:02.080 Why?
00:05:03.520 Because I don't think one person can go out there and be the greatest at 10 different things.
00:05:09.860 I just don't believe that.
00:05:10.840 You can't do it.
00:05:12.000 Greatest.
00:05:12.360 I don't think somebody can be great, phenomenal, best of the best in five different things
00:05:19.320 because you got to be focused into one thing to do it very good.
00:05:23.100 And typically when you do one thing very, very good, it typically bleeds into other aspects
00:05:27.760 of your life.
00:05:28.700 If you're the greatest comedian, you're automatically going to make a lot of money and have a lot
00:05:32.280 of different opportunities that come your way.
00:05:34.060 And your Rolodex, your phone book, all this other stuff is going to get better and better
00:05:36.860 and better.
00:05:37.440 You're probably going to get access to the better trainers, better teachers, better everything,
00:05:40.320 right?
00:05:40.940 Because you won so big in one level, right?
00:05:43.520 Once you win so big at one level, other places come.
00:05:45.760 If you're watching this, question for you is the following, and it's a challenge for you.
00:05:50.100 You can take it any way you want.
00:05:51.800 Take a close inventory of yourself and ask yourself, if you sit there and mainly measure the area
00:05:58.660 of your life that you've been incredibly successful at and discount the other areas that you can put an
00:06:04.940 effort in to compete as well, and you kind of make an excuse to hide away from it.
00:06:09.080 Now, I don't know if I need to necessarily do this part, but look how great I am in this, okay?
00:06:13.760 Look how good of a job I've done in this area.
00:06:16.000 Can you really make the effort also to get good at a couple different areas here, or are you just
00:06:19.140 hiding in one area?
00:06:19.960 That's the challenge to a lot of you.
00:06:21.300 Now, for some of you that are sitting there saying, man, Pat, after listening to this,
00:06:24.740 makes me feel better about myself.
00:06:25.980 Why?
00:06:26.800 Because a person like Doug, Doug, let me tell you something.
00:06:30.440 To raise a kid who he will never forget that his daddy played games with him and didn't
00:06:36.020 judge him and brought a computer to entertain him, and his son ends up going and working
00:06:39.560 at Best Buy, and you don't judge him, and now he's working as a cybersecurity person in
00:06:43.500 Colorado, you ought to be proud of yourself.
00:06:45.700 For a person like Doug that's been married for 20, 40 years, he and his wife are running
00:06:50.900 a business together, that's another method of success.
00:06:52.980 If you're the person that's constantly measuring yourself against others' failures, change your
00:06:59.320 mindset and challenge yourself.
00:07:01.000 But if you're the person that's always comparing others' success to your failures, never forget
00:07:06.160 that you also have won in other areas.
00:07:08.660 Sometimes Doug and people like him, you've got to re-remind yourself other areas you won
00:07:14.380 and to inject confidence in a new place that you can also win because the track record,
00:07:19.420 the clue that was left from winning another industry, that formula's there as well.
00:07:23.900 You just got to apply it to the new place.
00:07:25.380 Thanks, everybody, for listening, and by the way, if you haven't already subscribed to
