00:00:00.000 30 seconds.
00:00:01.840 Did you ever think you would make it?
00:00:04.220 I feel I'm so close I could take sweet victory.
00:00:07.620 I know this life meant for me.
00:00:10.760 Yeah, why would you bet on Goliath when we got Bet David?
00:00:14.580 Valuetainment, giving value is contagious.
00:00:16.420 This world of entrepreneurs, we get no value to haters.
00:00:19.160 How they run, homie?
00:00:20.140 Look what I become.
00:00:21.400 I'm the one.
00:00:22.400 I'm Patrick Bedvey, host of Valuetainment.
00:00:23.900 Today we're going to talk about why you ought to consider moving to another state.
00:00:26.480 And yes, you may want to pick up everything you have, move your family, your business,
00:00:31.160 everything to another state.
00:00:32.560 You see, coronavirus has brought a lot of negative things in America.
00:00:36.660 I'm talking cases, death, small businesses shutting down, people losing their jobs.
00:00:41.860 Here's news from CNN today, 2.4 million.
00:00:44.440 Another 2.4 million jobless claims.
00:00:47.300 That is now 38 million people are applying for unemployment.
00:00:51.300 Look at that number right there.
00:00:52.600 38.6.
00:00:53.540 These are scary numbers.
00:00:54.780 These are people that are trying to take care of their families, their husbands, their wives,
00:00:58.300 their kids.
00:00:59.180 But all of this stuff we're talking about is nowhere near to one of the scariest things
00:01:04.080 that's about to happen to certain governors in certain states, which is massive exodus,
00:01:08.780 potential massive exodus, and we're going to break things down.
00:01:11.760 Here's what we're going to look at in today's video.
00:01:13.140 Number one, I'm going to pull up data for you from small business owner and the Entrepreneurship
00:01:18.220 Council, let's say non-profit organization, that's going to give you data on what states
00:01:22.600 offer the best policies for small business owners, then what states offer the best taxes,
00:01:27.480 that's for business owners, then we're going to look at what states have the best sales
00:01:31.260 tax, state tax, and property tax, then I'm going to share with you a letter I wrote to
00:01:36.440 California years ago when I left California, and then last but not least, I'm going to
00:01:40.720 share with you 10 markers to look at before making your move.
00:01:44.100 So having said that, let's look at some of these markers.
00:01:45.820 So number one, when you're looking at moving to another state, you have to first look at
00:01:51.200 quality of life, this is what California sells on a lot, look at the weather here, your friends
00:01:55.920 and family are here, why would you want to leave your friends, the sports, I'm loyal to
00:01:59.920 the Lakers or the Knicks or the Bulls or whoever it is, entertainment, nightlife is amazing over
00:02:05.380 here, this is why no one will ever leave California.
00:02:08.060 Then you have to look at taxes, then you have to look at quality of talent, this is the one
00:02:11.820 part that New York and California get a lot of credit for, because if you do want quality
00:02:17.200 talent, it's in New York, it's in California, it's in Chicago, whatever cities that have
00:02:22.140 the highest competition typically have the best pool of talent, so if you want to start
00:02:26.240 a financial firm hypothetically and you want to go into hedge funds, you're probably better
00:02:31.040 off being in New York City, right?
00:02:32.700 If you want to create a technology, maybe a, you know, something to do with social media
00:02:38.960 or some kind of a technology, Silicon Valley, Santa Monica is the place to be.
00:02:42.580 If you want to do Hollywood, used to be Hollywood and Burbank, nowadays you're seeing some other
00:02:46.060 states taking place, but you've got to look at the talent, and this argument is typically
00:02:49.480 made for California, New York, Chicago.
00:02:51.880 Then if you're married with kids, schooling, you have to consider that, then airports, if
00:02:55.740 you travel a lot, especially international airports, then politics and regulation, which
00:02:59.900 we'll look at here in a minute, then quality of market, meaning is it a global business,
00:03:04.160 if it's a global business, are you going to get the talent to help you with this face-to-face,
00:03:08.340 phone, you have to consider this stuff.
00:03:09.780 Meaning, if I'm going into a city and a state, is the market, like a Walmart market, going
00:03:14.980 to have middle America customers that are going to buy the products that I sell, versus
00:03:19.840 in Naples, maybe Naples is not a Walmart product, maybe Naples is a different product, so you
00:03:24.920 have to look at what the product's going to be, and then you have to consider the state's
00:03:28.340 population growth, then crime, if you have a family and kids, and then it's long-term plan
00:03:33.740 vision, what you want to do long-term.
00:03:35.280 So those are 10 things you need to be looking at.
00:03:36.920 These are some of the things I looked at before leaving California.
00:03:39.840 So now let's look at some data.
00:03:41.000 Let's look at some data.
00:03:42.140 Here's the first data I want you to look at with me.
00:03:45.340 So this is a study, a report that came out, okay, showing ranking 50 states according to
00:03:52.860 public policy and tax climate for small business.
00:03:57.340 Again, both policy and tax climate.
00:04:00.960 So it's not just taxes, it's policy as well.
00:04:03.900 And the policies they looked at was here.
00:04:06.720 They measured, I'll read this to you, ranking the state policy and measures, cost of impacting
00:04:10.320 entrepreneurship and small business growth, ranks the 50 states according to 62 different
00:04:15.380 policy measures, including assorted tax, regulatory, and government spending measures, okay?
00:04:21.060 So you see what they're looking at.
00:04:22.520 This isn't just, oh, taxes are great, go there.
00:04:24.680 Let's see what the top 50 states look like here, okay?
00:04:27.920 If you want to zoom in, the best state with the best policies for entrepreneurs, small
00:04:33.600 businesses is what?
00:04:34.720 Texas.
00:04:35.700 Then you got Nevada.
00:04:36.680 Then it's Florida.
00:04:37.940 Then you got South Dakota, Wyoming, Indiana, Utah, Alabama, Arizona, Washington, Tennessee.
00:04:43.740 And you work your way down.
00:04:45.020 Just look at the list to see if it's the state you're living in or not or something you're
00:04:48.140 considering.
00:04:48.580 North Carolina, you got Dakotas, Missouri, South Carolina, Missouri, Georgia.
00:04:53.160 That's actually coming up a lot lately.
00:04:55.900 New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Kentucky.
00:04:58.820 Now work your way down here.
00:04:59.800 Look at this.
00:05:00.260 Massachusetts.
00:05:01.100 Scary stuff here.
00:05:02.440 Rhode Island, Maine, Iowa, Oregon, Connecticut.
00:05:05.420 This is like, these are some states that have businesses today.
00:05:09.500 Vermont, Minnesota.
00:05:10.880 Then look, New York, Hawaii, California, and Jersey, okay?
00:05:16.140 So this is policies.
00:05:18.020 We haven't yet looked at taxes and then sales taxes and property taxes.
00:05:22.920 This is only policies.
00:05:24.520 Sometimes when you're building a business and you're a small business owner, you have
00:05:27.920 an issue with an employer.
00:05:29.040 You have an issue with a competitor.
00:05:30.200 You have an issue with a contract.
00:05:31.240 You have an issue with something.
00:05:32.760 There are states that don't favor the small business owner.
00:05:35.160 They'll say things like, oh, all you care about is money.
00:05:37.540 Favor the other person.
00:05:38.480 The small business owner gets hurt and they have to let go of six, seven, eight employees.
00:05:42.140 If you run a business, you know how critical policies affect your business.
00:05:45.580 That's for those of you that are running a business.
00:05:47.780 So now let's look at taxes.
00:05:48.840 What do taxes look like?
00:05:50.260 Who's the best?
00:05:50.880 Who's the worst?
00:05:51.440 Number one is who?
00:05:53.240 Texas.
00:05:54.000 Best in taxes for small businesses.
00:05:57.740 South Dakota, second.
00:05:59.360 Then it's Nevada.
00:06:00.100 Then it's Wyoming.
00:06:00.880 Florida, mate.
00:06:01.420 Mixing the top five.
00:06:02.500 Washington, Ohio, Colorado.
00:06:04.440 Alaska, Alabama.
00:06:05.560 Arizona, Carolina.
00:06:06.620 North Carolina.
00:06:07.240 Michigan, Tennessee.
00:06:08.540 Indiana, Tennessee.
00:06:09.240 Utah, North Dakota.
00:06:10.040 You go down the list.
00:06:11.600 Georgia's 24th.
00:06:13.360 Look who's all the way at the bottom again.
00:06:15.100 Jersey and California.
00:06:17.040 Jersey and California.
00:06:18.620 Hawaii, Minnesota.
00:06:19.160 Look where New York's at.
00:06:20.540 44th.
00:06:21.260 So even New York is better than California.
00:06:24.840 Connecticut is better.
00:06:26.220 Maryland is better.
00:06:27.000 Even Illinois is better than California.
00:06:29.880 So now, California sees this and what do they say?
00:06:33.260 Here's what California says when they see this.
00:06:35.120 They say, but wait a minute.
00:06:36.760 Are you crazy?
00:06:37.460 No one's going to leave California because the entertainment here, the Los Angeles Lakers,
00:06:42.300 the Clippers, sports, dancing, nightclubs, Hollywood, family.
00:06:47.880 You have friends here.
00:06:48.760 Why would you be disloyal and leave your friends and family?
00:06:51.900 The weather here is perfect.
00:06:53.560 Why would you want to leave this?
00:06:55.280 And those things right there keep a lot of people from leaving the state of California
00:07:00.320 and New York, which is understandable.
00:07:02.480 But let's go a level deeper.
00:07:03.660 So I just talked to business owner.
00:07:05.280 Now let's talk to family.
00:07:07.760 Maybe you go buy stuff at the store.
00:07:09.560 You're shopping at Costco.
00:07:10.900 You're going to Walmart.
00:07:12.500 Maybe you have a property tax.
00:07:13.980 Like we had a house in LA and we had a house over here.
00:07:16.340 We have to look at the property tax in Texas.
00:07:18.580 Oh my gosh, properties are so low in Texas.
00:07:20.520 They may be a little lower than California, but is the property tax low?
00:07:24.300 You've got to look at all that stuff.
00:07:25.600 Let's take a look at this here.
00:07:26.480 Watch what happens here.
00:07:27.840 Okay?
00:07:28.240 Again, this sales tax, if you look at sales tax, from the highest to the lowest,
00:07:34.020 highest or lowest, or again, Montana, Delaware, Alaska, New Hampshire, Colorado, Hawaii, have zero.
00:07:39.940 Colorado's got the 3%, but New Hampshire, Alaska, Delaware, Montana have zero sales tax.
00:07:45.260 And then you go all the way down and guess who you find here?
00:07:47.460 Let me show Texas.
00:07:48.840 Texas is here.
00:07:49.520 Their sales tax is high.
00:07:51.160 It's a little over six.
00:07:52.220 And look who's all the way at the bottom.
00:07:53.660 The worst is who?
00:07:55.240 California by a mile.
00:07:56.800 Okay?
00:07:56.960 Even New York is up here, but California is all the way down here.
00:08:01.220 So now let's continue.
00:08:02.760 Pat, is this a taking a shot at California?
00:08:05.260 No, but California is taking a shot at themselves.
00:08:07.800 Let's look at this here.
00:08:08.960 All in taxes, New Hampshire, if you live there, no income tax, no sales tax, zero, zero.
00:08:15.640 And their property tax, I believe this is the third or the fourth highest.
00:08:20.460 So they make up their money in the property tax per $100,000.
00:08:24.380 So you see $22,96, and then you can look at Wyoming is $635.
00:08:28.280 So you see the difference.
00:08:29.060 Like over here, Colorado is $607.
00:08:30.860 Or even lower, Alabama is $432.
00:08:33.200 See how that works out?
00:08:34.220 So they make up their money in property tax, but no sales and no income tax.
00:08:37.880 Alaska, zero, zero, $1432.
00:08:39.660 Wyoming is next.
00:08:41.020 They have 4% sales, but no state.
00:08:42.840 Florida, zero, six.
00:08:44.340 Their sales tax is six.
00:08:45.760 Even Dakota is four.
00:08:47.180 But Florida, if you look at their property per $100,000 is $1,041.
00:08:52.360 Lower than New Hampshire.
00:08:54.120 Lower than Alaska.
00:08:55.000 So again, you've got to consider all this stuff.
00:08:56.500 Look at Texas.
00:08:57.140 This is exactly the point I was going to make.
00:08:59.140 Texas is sixth because their sales tax is slightly higher.
00:09:02.060 But look at the property tax.
00:09:04.240 1993, okay?
00:09:05.960 It's a very factual number.
00:09:07.580 I can tell you this from experience on both sides of my stuff.
00:09:11.000 Then it goes Washington.
00:09:11.900 Then it goes Nevada.
00:09:12.640 Then Tennessee.
00:09:14.420 These guys should be recruiting more business owners.
00:09:16.400 I don't know why they're not.
00:09:17.180 If I was a governor of Tennessee, we'd be recruiting everybody over there.
00:09:20.100 These guys should be recruiting way more.
00:09:22.040 And I don't know what they're doing over here.
00:09:23.640 Florida should be recruiting everybody right now.
00:09:25.840 But you continue to go down.
00:09:27.580 So you go all the way down and look at it again.
00:09:29.760 All the way at the bottom.
00:09:30.600 Who's at the bottom here?
00:09:32.060 Look at California.
00:09:33.640 13.3 state tax.
00:09:36.300 Sales tax 7.5.
00:09:38.180 Highest combined in taxes.
00:09:40.640 And then you have 841 property.
00:09:42.480 Which means if you're planning on buying a $20 million property in California versus Texas,
00:09:48.140 you're probably better off on property tax here.
00:09:50.880 But if you're planning on making a lot of money right now in your career,
00:09:55.040 this may be a different kind of a state to look at
00:09:57.240 because this state's going to tax the hell out of you if you're over there.
00:10:00.100 Okay?
00:10:00.580 And by the way, look where New York's at.
00:10:01.660 New York is way better than it is in California.
00:10:04.660 New York is 8.82 on income and 4% in state tax.
00:10:08.700 So now, you look at all this stuff and you say,
00:10:11.120 Pat, are you saying something?
00:10:13.500 I mean, I'm trying to read into what you're saying, Pat.
00:10:15.800 What's your point?
00:10:16.900 Let me get back to my point.
00:10:17.960 If you're making a decision, and let's go to the last one this time.
00:10:22.540 If you're clear about your long-term plans of what you want to do,
00:10:26.120 you've got to from now start thinking about how was the pandemic handled by the state you live in.
00:10:32.460 This data is 2019.
00:10:33.540 This data doesn't show how governors handle the pandemic.
00:10:37.400 This data doesn't show how much control they have over the populace.
00:10:41.320 This data doesn't show how many people are sick of it that are going to be leaving.
00:10:45.480 If you work for a company that doesn't take care of you, are you not going to look at another company to go to?
00:10:50.280 Yes.
00:10:50.820 It's the same exact thing that's going to happen when people move.
00:10:53.580 I lived in Iran.
00:10:54.800 They didn't take care of my family.
00:10:56.060 My parents decided to leave.
00:10:57.380 We went to Germany.
00:10:58.400 Had a great time in Germany.
00:10:59.760 But my family wanted to bring their kids to U.S.
00:11:01.660 We came here to U.S.
00:11:02.600 I lived in California.
00:11:03.980 Then I joined the Army.
00:11:05.000 Lived in Tennessee, Kentucky for a few years.
00:11:06.940 Then I came back to California.
00:11:08.300 Then I grew my business.
00:11:09.440 Then I looked around and said, wait a minute.
00:11:11.440 I've got a national business.
00:11:13.100 I've got offices everywhere.
00:11:14.380 I'm not going to fly Florida back and forth.
00:11:16.100 That's 13 hours.
00:11:17.280 Why am I doing this to myself?
00:11:18.800 Why am I paying all these taxes?
00:11:20.280 Why am I dealing with all this regulation?
00:11:21.740 One day a guy comes and knocks on my door.
00:11:24.080 Out of nowhere.
00:11:24.780 I'm in my office.
00:11:25.400 Guy comes and knocks on my door.
00:11:27.440 Yes.
00:11:28.680 We hear you're doing well.
00:11:29.880 We need to know your top line revenue.
00:11:31.120 Who are you?
00:11:31.840 Here's a business card.
00:11:33.100 I'm for the California, you know, L.A. County something something taxes.
00:11:36.960 What are you talking about?
00:11:37.700 Let me call my CPA.
00:11:38.940 I call my CPA.
00:11:39.660 I say, is this guy fake?
00:11:40.520 He says, what's the business card?
00:11:41.480 I send the business card.
00:11:42.600 He says, no.
00:11:43.200 They found out you're making money.
00:11:44.400 Do I have to pay the taxes?
00:11:45.980 You do.
00:11:46.280 What's the number they told you?
00:11:47.240 I said, how much do I owe you?
00:11:48.800 He says, well, based on the numbers we're seeing, you owe us $85,000.
00:11:51.460 I said, for what?
00:11:52.680 He says, for your top line revenue, what you've done the last couple years, and the county you're
00:11:56.860 in.
00:11:57.240 I said, you've got to be out of your mind.
00:11:58.260 He says, no.
00:11:58.660 I left the county.
00:11:59.660 I went to Glendale because there was 13 counties in L.A.
00:12:03.580 Now, you don't pay that 0.25%.
00:12:05.640 So, I went to a different county.
00:12:07.140 Then, after that county, they pushed me around again.
00:12:09.060 Then, I came to Texas.
00:12:10.280 Why?
00:12:11.160 Travel.
00:12:12.180 You know, airports.
00:12:13.960 Taxes.
00:12:15.100 Regulation.
00:12:15.880 Quality of life.
00:12:17.180 Schooling.
00:12:17.980 You know, values.
00:12:19.080 Principles.
00:12:19.640 You've got to look at this stuff.
00:12:21.000 Then, I came over here.
00:12:22.220 Worked out well.
00:12:23.020 We've got airport right in the middle, and then, we have to move all over the place.
00:12:25.640 When I wrote this letter to California, I put all my points there.
00:12:30.740 Here's how it started.
00:12:31.980 Dear California, this is probably one of the toughest letters I'll ever write.
00:12:35.480 We've gone through so many things together.
00:12:37.120 Many good times.
00:12:38.000 Many bad times.
00:12:38.740 I will never forget the first time I met you, November 28, 1990.
00:12:42.060 It was love at first sight.
00:12:43.340 I loved your curvaceous mountains, and I couldn't take my eyes off you every time you danced
00:12:47.800 your way to another earthquake.
00:12:49.400 I had many firsts with you.
00:12:50.720 My first time when we went to Disneyland.
00:12:52.940 First time we took a walk together on the beach.
00:12:55.040 First time we shared your famous song.
00:12:56.940 I'm talking dirty to California here, by the way.
00:12:59.040 First time we went shopping at Rodeo Drive.
00:13:01.380 First time we walked Hollywood Stars.
00:13:03.000 First time we went to Florentine Gardens together.
00:13:04.920 Some of you guys, you have to be 40 to know where that is.
00:13:07.140 First time we drove up the coast.
00:13:08.940 First time we visited San Francisco and had clam chowder at the Fisherman's.
00:13:12.540 First time we went to the Laker game together, and the best player of the team was Sedell Treed.
00:13:16.580 With all that being said in them, I wanted to take this moment to write 10 things I'll miss most
00:13:20.080 about California and why I chose to move to Texas.
00:13:22.540 I made that decision.
00:13:24.680 Do you know prior to making that decision, I talked about Texas to my family for five
00:13:29.540 years.
00:13:30.120 I convinced my employees and my staff for years, then I made my move.
00:13:33.840 I'm not pitching Texas.
00:13:35.260 I don't know if I'm going to be Texas long term.
00:13:37.260 All I'm saying to you is, if you are frustrated with some of the decisions that are being
00:13:42.800 made, and you've got a family, you've got kids, and you are planning on playing offense
00:13:48.160 the next five to 10, 15 years, you may, one, pay very close attention to the way you vote
00:13:55.580 next time and actually pay attention to who you're voting for, not who gets up and gives
00:14:00.940 away things for free if you're a business owner.
00:14:03.300 And number two, if you're somebody that really wants to make a difference and you're running
00:14:07.860 one of these states, maybe you've got to meet the right people that will help you plan your
00:14:12.140 campaign to run for Congress, office, governor, senate, whatever it's going to be, because
00:14:16.320 we need more people that are supporting business owners.
00:14:18.960 And number three, if you say, I don't care about politics, I never want to run half that
00:14:22.820 kind of a life, then maybe you ought to think about where you're going to be moving to next
00:14:25.860 based on this data.
00:14:27.100 Take a look at it.
00:14:28.020 Then have the conversation with your spouse, with your family, with your kids, with your
00:14:33.320 peers, the way I did it.
00:14:34.880 I didn't just say, oh, I'm leaving.
00:14:36.780 I took this information and I talked about it with the people I respected the most.
00:14:41.580 I sat down with the board.
00:14:42.480 Hey, what do you think about the stat that just came out in Time Magazine?
00:14:45.120 That for every one person that moves to California, two people are moving out.
00:14:47.940 What do you think about this?
00:14:49.040 Hey, what do you think about the stat?
00:14:50.020 The fact that there's better talent in California and New York than anywhere else.
00:14:52.640 Why would I want to go to a different place?
00:14:54.220 Hey, what do you think about this year?
00:14:55.600 It's not, you're not a good friend or family person if you leave your friends and family
00:15:00.640 behind and go to a different state.
00:15:01.920 Is it a form of guilt or is it truth behind it?
00:15:04.060 What do you, we had all of these conversations with friends, peers, family, co-workers, everybody,
00:15:10.080 and then dialogue led to ideas, led to emotions, led to feelings, and then we said, boom, we're
00:15:14.840 making a decision to move.
00:15:16.200 I'll never forget when my wife and I were taking about 100 of our guys to Dubai, we were staying
00:15:19.920 at, I don't know where we were staying at, Atlantis and Abu Jal Arab, yeah.
00:15:23.340 And we were going there and I went to the airport and we're going with our friends at
00:15:28.380 the airport.
00:15:28.860 They said, you can't go to France.
00:15:30.140 France is not going to take you.
00:15:31.120 I said, why not?
00:15:31.580 I said, because your passport expires in four months.
00:15:33.780 France wants your passport to expire in six months.
00:15:35.760 So you've got to be kidding me.
00:15:37.000 Yes.
00:15:38.100 I said, babe, you go, I'll meet you in Dubai.
00:15:40.440 So she leaves with my friends.
00:15:42.280 She went with friends I trust and they went together.
00:15:44.600 I stay back.
00:15:45.580 I come home.
00:15:46.280 I go to the federal, whatever the building is to get your, what's the building you go
00:15:50.200 to to get passports?
00:15:51.180 Anyways, it's a federal building you go to get your passport, right?
00:15:54.600 So I go to get my passport.
00:15:56.200 I wait in line.
00:15:57.660 Late at night, I tell the guy, listen, I need it.
00:15:59.720 My wife's in Dubai.
00:16:00.440 I got to go to Dubai.
00:16:01.260 Well, you know, we don't know, Baba.
00:16:02.360 I said, listen, what do I need to do?
00:16:03.340 I need to get this.
00:16:03.960 Come back here at three o'clock in the morning.
00:16:05.320 I'm coming back.
00:16:06.140 First in line.
00:16:06.800 I wait.
00:16:07.260 Nine hours, I finally get my passport.
00:16:09.180 That night, I went home and I talked to my nanny.
00:16:11.480 And I said, Baba, we want to go to Texas.
00:16:14.460 Why can't you go to Texas?
00:16:15.780 She was the last person holding me back from going to Texas.
00:16:19.200 She was the last person.
00:16:20.160 I said, what's your biggest hesitation?
00:16:21.880 She said, Patrick, we got six, you know, I got my six grandkids living in LA.
00:16:26.260 What do you want me to do?
00:16:27.460 I said, how about if I fly out to California once a month and you come with me to Texas?
00:16:31.220 She said, you would do that?
00:16:32.500 I said, if you move out there.
00:16:33.700 She says, great.
00:16:34.500 Then I'm in.
00:16:35.040 I said, no problem.
00:16:35.620 I said, so I ended up going to Dubai and the best thing that happened with canceling my flight
00:16:39.800 is I was able to renegotiate and deal with my nanny for her to be willing to go to Texas.
00:16:43.840 Six months later, we moved to Texas.
00:16:45.640 The rest is history.
00:16:46.720 Moral of the story is here.
00:16:48.640 If you really, really, point number 10, if you really, really are serious and you got big plans long term,
00:16:55.120 stop letting politicians and your state bully you.
00:16:59.100 Start making a serious decision long term what you're going to be doing
00:17:03.500 and go do your own research and decide where you will be 5, 10, 15 years from now.
00:17:09.800 Thanks, everybody, for listening.
