00:00:30.720 The new reading list, approved by the Texas State Board of Education, is set to begin in 2030

00:00:35.760 and also includes Bible stories and picture books like Noah's Ark

00:00:39.700 and the stories of Exodus and Adam and Eve for older students.

00:00:44.040 It follows last year's required posting of the Ten Commandments, a move recently upheld in federal court.

00:00:49.920 The Education Board, which is controlled by Republicans, voted to pass a new required reading list on Friday.

00:00:54.760 They vote 9-5-1.

00:00:57.060 The list for required literature includes sections of the book Exodus for 5th graders,

00:01:01.060 Shepard Palm, a psalm for 7th graders, and more.

00:01:04.880 Board discussions about the required reading list took place on Friday morning

00:01:11.340 and questioned of teachers' autonomy and deciding which works should be required reading.

00:01:28.940 Well, this is a big deal because something you just read in there is what was hiding.

00:01:32.600 So teachers, most of the time in public schools, I don't know the percent nationwide, are in unions.

00:01:40.100 And the unions are there because they're, hey, we're going to get you a better wage.

00:01:43.280 We're going to get you benefits.

00:01:44.220 We're going to get you a better pension and all that.

00:01:48.020 And so what you just read hiding in there, Pat, teachers' autonomy.

00:01:53.540 The unions want teachers to have autonomy so they could rebel and they can inject things they want to.

00:02:00.700 The school board is saying, no, we will set the curriculum.

00:02:05.100 You, as an employee, unionized or not, your job is to teach what we select.

00:02:12.720 You're not a political activist in the classroom.

00:02:17.840 And Texas, last year, pushed it all the way to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on the Ten Commandments.

00:02:25.160 As of September of last year, to start the school year, last year, 2025, so we're getting close to it,

00:02:32.900 that report correctly pointed out that the Ten Commandments are there.

00:02:39.280 Teachers, unions, and teachers looked at the Ten Commandments, and they said,

00:02:46.200 One part says you won't commit adultery, steal, covet, lie, or kill.

00:02:50.220 Hmm, there's a bunch of things in there that are probably pretty good for citizens not to do.

00:02:54.740 And then, wait, the one in the middle is honor your mother and father.

00:02:58.780 Wait a minute, what's so religious or upsetting about honor your mom and dad, don't kill, don't steal, don't lie?

00:03:06.100 And then, of course, there's no other God before me, don't make any idols, don't use my name in vain, and keep the Sabbath,

00:03:11.000 which is they were viewed that as basically Jewish history

00:03:15.360 because it was the book of Exodus when Moses came off Mount Sinai.
