Nick Reiner makes his first court appearance to face murder charges in the death of his parents, Rob and Michelle Reiner, and the disappearance of his sister-in-law, Amy Poehler. Rob and Amy were shot and killed in their own home on New Year's Eve.
00:01:39.820And let me just say this, unlike some people, Rob and Michelle Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know.
00:05:03.180So, you can imagine a party of actual famous people and fame-adjacent people who are really used to strange behavior out in public, but here they are at a gathering of their peers at a party hosted by Conan.
00:05:52.840So when he came up and asked him questions such as, what's your name, are you famous, um, it was—it was unsettling and described as scary from—from Hader's perspective.
00:06:02.240And then how—how—do you know how long he stayed at the party? Was he asked to leave?
00:06:06.060That is unclear, um, and there are kind of conflicting reports about how much tension was in the room, um, whether or not he may have argued with his dad and whether that argument was significant at all.
00:06:16.760Um, I think what stands is this fact that this is going to be remembered as a very strange prelude to a really horrific turn of events.
00:06:25.900You've also done a lot of reporting just on his addiction, on his—on his past.
00:06:30.180Yeah, I mean, the—the fact that, um, Rob and Michelle have brought their 32-year-old son to this party, I think, is kind of a sign of their ongoing efforts over the years to really stabilize him, to normalize his life had been rocked many, many times by his addiction.
00:06:46.920And—and there had been, um, I mean, there had been a lot of efforts by Rob Reiner over the years, I mean, making that film, Rob Reiner worked as a director on it—the—the—the movie that his son co-wrote, apparently without salary even, in the hopes that that would sort of launch him into a career, I guess.
00:07:03.920Correct. And to really trying to understand what Nick had gone through as—as a father.
00:07:08.520I mean, that's how Rob described it, at least.
00:07:10.840Um, and what's remarkable is that—that whole thing would be private and opaque to us if that movie hadn't happened.
00:07:17.080And they hadn't gone on these press tours talking about their problems with, you know, kind of varying degrees of comfort and discomfort, it seemed like, on—on both their parts.
00:07:24.400Yeah, it's fascinating to report in Wall Street.
00:07:26.200So, by the age of 22, by the age of 22, he went to rehab 18 times.
00:07:30.660By the age of 22, he went to rehab 18 times.
00:07:36.000Another story that just dropped from TMZ right now, it says he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and a meds he was taken made him erratic and dangerous, okay?
00:10:09.500We don't know what type of abuse happened.
00:10:11.700Nobody knows what makes that type of thing happen.
00:10:15.100I'm going to be very, very—I'm interested and curious to see what the defense is going to say and have for Nick.
00:10:22.040Because I'm telling you, schizophrenia aside, he's going to probably reveal a lot of stuff that a lot of things, a lot of abuse—I don't know if it's going to be true or not, but I think a lot's going to come out in the wash, and I'm very curious to see how his siblings are going to respond to potentially some of the abuse that he had.
00:10:38.100Because it's—to me, I've never heard of a 14-year-old in rehab.
00:11:15.820But I'll tell you this, when we were looking for schools in California, looking for quality schools, we were at a private school.
00:11:23.620And at the private school, Vinny, you can say, wow, you know, this kid's been in rehab 18 times.
00:11:29.320But there were kids at that school that were not in rehab, that needed rehab, and celebrity parents didn't want them to be identified publicly because they didn't want the—
00:11:45.960And they tried to work with things with their kids privately, and yet they were enabling through, you know, monetary availability of kids to get their hands on drugs.
00:11:55.160And they're hanging out with other celebrity kids that had wealth that were able to get their hands on drugs.
00:12:01.940So I don't think it's—that the story—the story can be, how did this guy end up in rehab 18 times since he was 14?
00:12:09.920I mean, there's part of me that says, thank God he was in rehab and they were trying to get somewhere, but obviously it came off the rails.
00:12:16.340And at 32 years old, he then commits this.
00:12:18.580But there's another story in Los Angeles, and Pat's been around it, I've been around it, is the celebrities that never took their kids to rehab, but they needed help.
00:12:26.020Because they don't want the reflection on their own reputation.
00:12:30.120Yeah, I don't think that was Rob, though.
00:12:32.460I think Rob, you know, if he went to rehab that many times, you know, at least he wanted to do something about it.
00:12:37.220This is a clip, by the way, of him walking around after his parents were found.
00:13:22.540As you see something like this taking place with the sun.
00:13:26.560I think a lot is going to come out, and I don't know.
00:13:28.820This story can go many different directions, by the way.
00:13:31.860This story can go many, many different directions when some of the stories comes out, and the legacy could be good, bad, and ugly very quickly.
00:13:39.360What do you mean by many different directions, sir?
00:13:43.240I saw some things that was just a little bit uncomfortable.
00:13:47.680I saw some things that was a little bit uncomfortable.
00:13:49.220You know, you can come and do a roast and say stuff you want to say about me.
00:13:53.800You can say roast about a lot of other stuff.
00:13:56.580Roast about a young son and what you do to him and what happens to him.
